द्रौणिर्युधिष्ठिरं दृष्ट्वा शैनेयेनाभिरक्षितम् ।
द्रौपदेयैस्तथा शूरैरभ्यवर्तत हृष्टवत् ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: Upon seeing Yudhiṣṭhira well-guarded by Sātyaki (Śaineya) and also by the brave sons of Draupadī (Draupadeyas), Droṇa's son (Drauṇi) advanced with joy.
किरन्निषुगणान्घोरान्स्वर्णपुङ्खाञ्शिलाशितान् ।
दर्शयन्विविधान्मार्गाञ्शिक्षार्थं लघुहस्तवत् ॥२॥
2. kiranniṣugaṇānghorānsvarṇapuṅkhāñśilāśitān ,
darśayanvividhānmārgāñśikṣārthaṁ laghuhastavat.

2. Scattering terrible, gold-shafted arrows sharpened on stone, and demonstrating various techniques as if for the purpose of instruction, with the swiftness of hand (laghuhastavat).
ततः खं पूरयामास शरैर्दिव्यास्त्रमन्त्रितैः ।
युधिष्ठिरं च समरे पर्यवारयदस्त्रवित् ॥३॥
3. tataḥ khaṁ pūrayāmāsa śarairdivyāstramantritaiḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ ca samare paryavārayadastravit.
3. tataḥ kham pūrayāmāsa śaraiḥ divyāstramantritaiḥ

3. Then, the expert in weapons (astravit) filled the sky with arrows consecrated by divine weapon (divyāstra) incantations (mantra), and he surrounded Yudhiṣṭhira in the battle.
द्रौणायनिशरच्छन्नं न प्राज्ञायत किंचन ।
बाणभूतमभूत्सर्वमायोधनशिरो हि तत् ॥४॥
4. drauṇāyaniśaracchannaṁ na prājñāyata kiṁcana ,
bāṇabhūtamabhūtsarvamāyodhanaśiro hi tat.

4. Indeed, the entire battlefield (āyodhanaśiras), completely covered by Aśvatthāman's (Drauṇāyani) arrows, transformed into nothing but arrows, and nothing at all could be discerned.
बाणजालं दिविष्ठं तत्स्वर्णजालविभूषितम् ।
शुशुभे भरतश्रेष्ठ वितानमिव विष्ठितम् ॥५॥
5. bāṇajālaṁ diviṣṭhaṁ tatsvarṇajālavibhūṣitam ,
śuśubhe bharataśreṣṭha vitānamiva viṣṭhitam.
5. bāṇajālam diviṣṭham tat svarṇajālavibhūṣitam
śuśubhe bharataśreṣṭha vitānam iva viṣṭhitam

5. O best of Bharatas, that network of arrows, situated in the sky and adorned with golden nets, shone beautifully like a canopy spread out.
तेन छन्ने रणे राजन्बाणजालेन भास्वता ।
अभ्रच्छायेव संजज्ञे बाणरुद्धे नभस्तले ॥६॥
6. tena channe raṇe rājanbāṇajālena bhāsvatā ,
abhracchāyeva saṁjajñe bāṇaruddhe nabhastale.

6. O King, as that brilliant network of arrows covered the battlefield, it created the appearance of a cloud's shadow in the sky, which was completely obstructed by the arrows.
तत्राश्चर्यमपश्याम बाणभूते तथाविधे ।
न स्म संपतते भूमौ दृष्ट्वा द्रौणेः पराक्रमम् ॥७॥
7. tatrāścaryamapaśyāma bāṇabhūte tathāvidhe ,
na sma saṁpatate bhūmau dṛṣṭvā drauṇeḥ parākramam.
7. tatra āścaryam apaśyāma bāṇabhūte tathāvidhe na
sma saṃpatate bhūmau dṛṣṭvā drauṇeḥ parākramam

7. There we witnessed a wonder: even though it had become a field of arrows of that nature (so dense), and upon seeing Aśvatthāman's (Drauṇi) valor (parākrama), not a single arrow fell to the ground.
लाघवं द्रोणपुत्रस्य दृष्ट्वा तत्र महारथाः ।
व्यस्मयन्त महाराज न चैनं प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ।
शेकुस्ते सर्वराजानस्तपन्तमिव भास्करम् ॥८॥
8. lāghavaṁ droṇaputrasya dṛṣṭvā tatra mahārathāḥ ,
vyasmayanta mahārāja na cainaṁ prativīkṣitum ,
śekuste sarvarājānastapantamiva bhāskaram.

8. O great king, having witnessed the swiftness of Drona's son, the great charioteers there were astonished. Indeed, none of those kings were able to confront him, who was like the blazing sun.
सात्यकिर्यतमानस्तु धर्मराजश्च पाण्डवः ।
तथेतराणि सैन्यानि न स्म चक्रुः पराक्रमम् ॥९॥
9. sātyakiryatamānastu dharmarājaśca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
tathetarāṇi sainyāni na sma cakruḥ parākramam.

9. But even though Satyaki and the Pandava King Yudhishthira (dharma-rāja) were striving, the other armies likewise failed to demonstrate their prowess.
वध्यमाने ततः सैन्ये द्रौपदेया महारथाः ।
सात्यकिर्धर्मराजश्च पाञ्चालाश्चापि संगताः ।
त्यक्त्वा मृत्युभयं घोरं द्रौणायनिमुपाद्रवन् ॥१०॥
10. vadhyamāne tataḥ sainye draupadeyā mahārathāḥ ,
sātyakirdharmarājaśca pāñcālāścāpi saṁgatāḥ ,
tyaktvā mṛtyubhayaṁ ghoraṁ drauṇāyanimupādravan.
10. vadhyamāne tataḥ sanye draupadeyāḥ
mahārathāḥ sātyakiḥ dharmarājaḥ ca
pāñcālāḥ ca api saṅgatāḥ tyaktvā

10. Then, as the army was being slaughtered, the great charioteers - Draupadi's sons, Satyaki, King Yudhishthira (dharma-rāja), and also the assembled Panchalas - abandoned their dreadful fear of death and rushed to attack Drona's son.
सात्यकिः पञ्चविंशत्या द्रौणिं विद्ध्वा शिलामुखैः ।
पुनर्विव्याध नाराचैः सप्तभिः स्वर्णभूषितैः ॥११॥
11. sātyakiḥ pañcaviṁśatyā drauṇiṁ viddhvā śilāmukhaiḥ ,
punarvivyādha nārācaiḥ saptabhiḥ svarṇabhūṣitaiḥ.

11. Satyaki first wounded Drona's son with twenty-five stone-tipped arrows, and then again pierced him with seven gold-embellished iron arrows.
युधिष्ठिरस्त्रिसप्तत्या प्रतिविन्ध्यश्च सप्तभिः ।
श्रुतकर्मा त्रिभिर्बाणैः श्रुतकीर्तिस्तु सप्तभिः ॥१२॥
12. yudhiṣṭhirastrisaptatyā prativindhyaśca saptabhiḥ ,
śrutakarmā tribhirbāṇaiḥ śrutakīrtistu saptabhiḥ.

12. Yudhiṣṭhira (the son of Dharma) struck with seventy-three arrows, Prativindhya with seven, Śrutakarmā with three arrows, and Śrutakīrti with seven.
सुतसोमश्च नवभिः शतानीकश्च सप्तभिः ।
अन्ये च बहवः शूरा विव्यधुस्तं समन्ततः ॥१३॥
13. sutasomaśca navabhiḥ śatānīkaśca saptabhiḥ ,
anye ca bahavaḥ śūrā vivyadhustaṁ samantataḥ.
13. sutasomaḥ ca navabhiḥ śatānīkaḥ ca saptabhiḥ
anye ca bahavaḥ śūrāḥ vivyadhuḥ tam samantataḥ
13. sutasomaḥ ca navabhiḥ,

13. Sutasoma (son of Bhīma) struck with nine arrows, and Śatānīka (son of Nakula) with seven. And many other brave warriors pierced him from all sides.
सोऽतिक्रुद्धस्ततो राजन्नाशीविष इव श्वसन् ।
सात्यकिं पञ्चविंशत्या प्राविध्यत शिलाशितैः ॥१४॥
14. so'tikruddhastato rājannāśīviṣa iva śvasan ,
sātyakiṁ pañcaviṁśatyā prāvidhyata śilāśitaiḥ.
14. saḥ atikruddhaḥ tataḥ rājan āśīviṣaḥ iva śvasan
sātyakim pañcaviṃśatyā prāvidhyata śilāśitaiḥ
14. rājan,

14. Then, O King, he, extremely enraged, hissing like a venomous snake, pierced Sātyaki with twenty-five stone-sharpened arrows.
श्रुतकीर्तिं च नवभिः सुतसोमं च पञ्चभिः ।
अष्टभिः श्रुतकर्माणं प्रतिविन्ध्यं त्रिभिः शरैः ।
शतानीकं च नवभिर्धर्मपुत्रं च सप्तभिः ॥१५॥
15. śrutakīrtiṁ ca navabhiḥ sutasomaṁ ca pañcabhiḥ ,
aṣṭabhiḥ śrutakarmāṇaṁ prativindhyaṁ tribhiḥ śaraiḥ ,
śatānīkaṁ ca navabhirdharmaputraṁ ca saptabhiḥ.
15. śrutakīrtim ca navabhiḥ sutasomam ca
pañcabhiḥ aṣṭabhiḥ śrutakarmāṇam
pratvindhyam tribhiḥ śaraiḥ śatānīkam
ca navabhiḥ dharmaputram ca saptabhiḥ
15. (saḥ) śrutakīrtim ca navabhiḥ,
sutasomam ca pañcabhiḥ,
śrutakarmāṇam aṣṭabhiḥ,
pratvindhyam tribhiḥ śaraiḥ,
śatānīkam ca navabhiḥ,
ca dharmaputram saptabhiḥ (prāvidhyata)
15. (He pierced) Śrutakīrti with nine (arrows), Sutasoma with five, Śrutakarmā with eight, Prativindhya with three arrows, Śatānīka with nine, and the son of Dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira) with seven.
अथेतरांस्ततः शूरान्द्वाभ्यां द्वाभ्यामताडयत् ।
श्रुतकीर्तेस्तथा चापं चिच्छेद निशितैः शरैः ॥१६॥
16. athetarāṁstataḥ śūrāndvābhyāṁ dvābhyāmatāḍayat ,
śrutakīrtestathā cāpaṁ ciccheda niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.
16. atha itarān tataḥ śūrān dvābhyām dvābhyām atāḍayat
śrutakīrteḥ tathā cāpam ciccheda niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
16. atha tataḥ dvābhyām dvābhyām itarān śūrān atāḍayat
tathā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ śrutakīrteḥ cāpam ciccheda
16. Then he struck the other brave warriors, two by two. He also cut Śrutakīrti's bow with sharp arrows.
अथान्यद्धनुरादाय श्रुतकीर्तिर्महारथः ।
द्रौणायनिं त्रिभिर्विद्ध्वा विव्याधान्यैः शितैः शरैः ॥१७॥
17. athānyaddhanurādāya śrutakīrtirmahārathaḥ ,
drauṇāyaniṁ tribhirviddhvā vivyādhānyaiḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ.
17. atha anyat dhanuḥ ādāya śrutakīrtiḥ mahārathaḥ
drauṇāyanim tribhiḥ viddhvā vivyādha anyaiḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ
17. atha mahārathaḥ śrutakīrtiḥ anyat dhanuḥ ādāya tribhiḥ

17. Then Śrutakīrti, the great chariot warrior, took another bow. Having pierced Droṇāyāni (Aśvatthāman) with three arrows, he then struck him again with other sharp arrows.
ततो द्रौणिर्महाराज शरवर्षेण भारत ।
छादयामास तत्सैन्यं समन्ताच्च शरैर्नृपान् ॥१८॥
18. tato drauṇirmahārāja śaravarṣeṇa bhārata ,
chādayāmāsa tatsainyaṁ samantācca śarairnṛpān.
18. tataḥ drauṇiḥ mahārāja śaravarṣeṇa bhārata
chādayāmāsa tat sainyam samantāt ca śaraiḥ nṛpān

18. Then, O great king, O Bhārata, Droṇi (Aśvatthāman) covered that army with a shower of arrows, and the kings all around with (more) arrows.
ततः पुनरमेयात्मा धर्मराजस्य कार्मुकम् ।
द्रौणिश्चिच्छेद विहसन्विव्याध च शरैस्त्रिभिः ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ punarameyātmā dharmarājasya kārmukam ,
drauṇiściccheda vihasanvivyādha ca śaraistribhiḥ.
19. tataḥ punaḥ ameyātmā dharmarājasya kārmukam
drauṇiḥ ciccheda vihasan vivyādha ca śaraiḥ tribhiḥ
19. tataḥ punaḥ ameyātmā drauṇiḥ vihasan dharmarājasya

19. Then again, Droṇi (Aśvatthāman), whose spirit (ātman) was immeasurable, laughing, cut Dharmarāja's bow and pierced him with three arrows.
ततो धर्मसुतो राजन्प्रगृह्यान्यन्महद्धनुः ।
द्रौणिं विव्याध सप्तत्या बाह्वोरुरसि चार्दयत् ॥२०॥
20. tato dharmasuto rājanpragṛhyānyanmahaddhanuḥ ,
drauṇiṁ vivyādha saptatyā bāhvorurasi cārdayat.
20. tataḥ dharmasutaḥ rājan pragṛhya anyat mahat dhanuḥ
Drauṇim vivyādha saptatyā bāhvoḥ urasi ca ardayat
20. rājan tataḥ dharmasutaḥ anyat mahat dhanuḥ pragṛhya
Drauṇim saptatyā bāhvoḥ urasi ca vivyādha ardayat
20. O King, then Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma, taking up another great bow, pierced Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman) with seventy arrows and afflicted him in both arms and the chest.
सात्यकिस्तु ततः क्रुद्धो द्रौणेः प्रहरतो रणे ।
अर्धचन्द्रेण तीक्ष्णेन धनुश्छित्त्वानदद्भृशम् ॥२१॥
21. sātyakistu tataḥ kruddho drauṇeḥ praharato raṇe ,
ardhacandreṇa tīkṣṇena dhanuśchittvānadadbhṛśam.
21. Sātyaki tu tataḥ kruddhaḥ Drauṇeḥ praharataḥ raṇe
ardhacandreṇa tīkṣṇena dhanuḥ chittvā anadat bhṛśam
21. tu tataḥ kruddhaḥ Sātyaki raṇe praharataḥ Drauṇeḥ
tīkṣṇena ardhacandreṇa dhanuḥ chittvā bhṛśam anadat
21. But then, enraged, Sātyaki, while Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman) was attacking in battle, cut his bow with a sharp, crescent-shaped arrow and roared loudly.
छिन्नधन्वा ततो द्रौणिः शक्त्या शक्तिमतां वरः ।
सारथिं पातयामास शैनेयस्य रथाद्द्रुतम् ॥२२॥
22. chinnadhanvā tato drauṇiḥ śaktyā śaktimatāṁ varaḥ ,
sārathiṁ pātayāmāsa śaineyasya rathāddrutam.

22. Then Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman), whose bow had been cut, (though he was) the best among the powerful, quickly struck down Śaineya's (Sātyaki's) charioteer from the chariot with a spear.
अथान्यद्धनुरादाय द्रोणपुत्रः प्रतापवान् ।
शैनेयं शरवर्षेण छादयामास भारत ॥२३॥
23. athānyaddhanurādāya droṇaputraḥ pratāpavān ,
śaineyaṁ śaravarṣeṇa chādayāmāsa bhārata.

Śaineyam śaravarṣeṇa chādayām āsa Bhārata
23. Bhārata atha pratāpavān Droṇaputraḥ anyat

23. O Bhārata, then Droṇa's powerful son (Aśvatthāman), taking another bow, enveloped Śaineya (Sātyaki) with a shower of arrows.
तस्याश्वाः प्रद्रुताः संख्ये पतिते रथसारथौ ।
तत्र तत्रैव धावन्तः समदृश्यन्त भारत ॥२४॥
24. tasyāśvāḥ pradrutāḥ saṁkhye patite rathasārathau ,
tatra tatraiva dhāvantaḥ samadṛśyanta bhārata.

24. O Bhārata, after her chariot driver had fallen in battle, her horses were seen fleeing, running erratically here and there.
युधिष्ठिरपुरोगास्ते द्रौणिं शस्त्रभृतां वरम् ।
अभ्यवर्षन्त वेगेन विसृजन्तः शिताञ्शरान् ॥२५॥
25. yudhiṣṭhirapurogāste drauṇiṁ śastrabhṛtāṁ varam ,
abhyavarṣanta vegena visṛjantaḥ śitāñśarān.

25. Led by Yudhiṣṭhira, they swiftly showered Droṇi (Aśvatthāman), who was the foremost among weapon-bearers, by releasing sharp arrows.
आगच्छमानांस्तान्दृष्ट्वा रौद्ररूपान्परंतपः ।
प्रहसन्प्रतिजग्राह द्रोणपुत्रो महारणे ॥२६॥
26. āgacchamānāṁstāndṛṣṭvā raudrarūpānparaṁtapaḥ ,
prahasanpratijagrāha droṇaputro mahāraṇe.

26. Having seen those approaching warriors, who were terrible in form, Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman), the tormentor of foes, smilingly received them in the great battle.
ततः शरशतज्वालः सेनाकक्षं महारथः ।
द्रौणिर्ददाह समरे कक्षमग्निर्यथा वने ॥२७॥
27. tataḥ śaraśatajvālaḥ senākakṣaṁ mahārathaḥ ,
drauṇirdadāha samare kakṣamagniryathā vane.

drauṇiḥ dadāha samare kakṣam agniḥ yathā vane
27. tataḥ mahārathaḥ drauṇiḥ śaraśatajvālaḥ samare
senākakṣam dadāha yathā agniḥ vane kakṣam
27. Then, the great warrior Droṇi (Aśvatthāman), whose arrows were like a hundred flames, burned the enemy's ranks in battle, just as a fire consumes dry undergrowth in a forest.
तद्बलं पाण्डुपुत्रस्य द्रोणपुत्रप्रतापितम् ।
चुक्षुभे भरतश्रेष्ठ तिमिनेव नदीमुखम् ॥२८॥
28. tadbalaṁ pāṇḍuputrasya droṇaputrapratāpitam ,
cukṣubhe bharataśreṣṭha timineva nadīmukham.
28. tat balam pāṇḍuputrasya droṇaputrapratāpitam
cukṣubhe bharataśreṣṭha timinā iva nadīmukham
28. bharataśreṣṭha droṇaputrapratāpitam pāṇḍuputrasya

28. O best among the Bharatas, that army of Yudhishthira, tormented by Drona's son, Ashvatthama, was agitated just like the mouth of a river is churned by a large sea monster.
दृष्ट्वा ते च महाराज द्रोणपुत्रपराक्रमम् ।
निहतान्मेनिरे सर्वान्पाण्डून्द्रोणसुतेन वै ॥२९॥
29. dṛṣṭvā te ca mahārāja droṇaputraparākramam ,
nihatānmenire sarvānpāṇḍūndroṇasutena vai.
29. dṛṣṭvā te ca mahārāja droṇaputraparākramam
nihatān menire sarvān pāṇḍūn droṇasutena vai
29. mahārāja te ca droṇaputraparākramam dṛṣṭvā
droṇasutena sarvān pāṇḍūn nihatān vai menire
29. And they, O great king, having witnessed the valor of Drona's son, Ashvatthama, truly believed that all the Pandavas had been slain by Drona's son.
युधिष्ठिरस्तु त्वरितो द्रौणिं श्लिष्य महारथम् ।
अब्रवीद्द्रोणपुत्रं तु रोषामर्षसमन्वितः ॥३०॥
30. yudhiṣṭhirastu tvarito drauṇiṁ śliṣya mahāratham ,
abravīddroṇaputraṁ tu roṣāmarṣasamanvitaḥ.
30. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tu tvaritaḥ drauṇim śliṣya mahāratham
abravīt droṇaputram tu roṣāmarṣasamanvitaḥ

30. But Yudhishthira, having quickly embraced Droni, the great chariot-warrior, then spoke to Drona's son, filled with anger and indignation.
नैव नाम तव प्रीतिर्नैव नाम कृतज्ञता ।
यतस्त्वं पुरुषव्याघ्र मामेवाद्य जिघांससि ॥३१॥
31. naiva nāma tava prītirnaiva nāma kṛtajñatā ,
yatastvaṁ puruṣavyāghra māmevādya jighāṁsasi.
31. na eva nāma tava prītiḥ na eva nāma kṛtajñatā
yataḥ tvam puruṣavyāghra mām eva adya jighāṃsasi
31. puruṣavyāghra tava prītiḥ na eva nāma na eva nāma
kṛtajñatā yataḥ tvam adya mām eva jighāṃsasi
31. There is certainly no affection (prīti) for you, nor indeed any gratitude (kṛtajñatā), for you, O tiger among men (puruṣa), desire to kill me alone today.
ब्राह्मणेन तपः कार्यं दानमध्ययनं तथा ।
क्षत्रियेण धनुर्नाम्यं स भवान्ब्राह्मणब्रुवः ॥३२॥
32. brāhmaṇena tapaḥ kāryaṁ dānamadhyayanaṁ tathā ,
kṣatriyeṇa dhanurnāmyaṁ sa bhavānbrāhmaṇabruvaḥ.
32. brāhmaṇena tapaḥ kāryam dānam adhyayanam tathā
kṣatriyeṇa dhanuḥ nāmyam saḥ bhavān brāhmaṇabruvaḥ
32. brāhmaṇena tapaḥ kāryam dānam adhyayanam tathā
kṣatriyeṇa dhanuḥ nāmyam saḥ bhavān brāhmaṇabruvaḥ
32. A Brahmin should perform austerity (tapas), give gifts (dāna), and engage in study. A Kṣatriya should wield the bow. But you, sir, are merely one who claims to be a Brahmin.
मिषतस्ते महाबाहो जेष्यामि युधि कौरवान् ।
कुरुष्व समरे कर्म ब्रह्मबन्धुरसि ध्रुवम् ॥३३॥
33. miṣataste mahābāho jeṣyāmi yudhi kauravān ,
kuruṣva samare karma brahmabandhurasi dhruvam.
33. miṣataḥ te mahābāho jeṣyāmi yudhi kauravān
kuruṣva samare karma brahmabandhuḥ asi dhruvam
33. mahābāho te miṣataḥ yudhi kauravān jeṣyāmi
samare karma kuruṣva dhruvam brahmabandhuḥ asi
33. O mighty-armed one, while you watch, I will conquer the Kauravas in battle. Perform your duty (karma) in this conflict, for you are certainly just a kinsman of Brahmins.
एवमुक्तो महाराज द्रोणपुत्रः स्मयन्निव ।
युक्तत्वं तच्च संचिन्त्य नोत्तरं किंचिदब्रवीत् ॥३४॥
34. evamukto mahārāja droṇaputraḥ smayanniva ,
yuktatvaṁ tacca saṁcintya nottaraṁ kiṁcidabravīt.
34. evam uktaḥ mahārāja droṇaputraḥ smayan iva
yuktatvam tat ca saṃcintya na uttaram kiṃcit abravīt
34. mahārāja evam uktaḥ droṇaputraḥ smayan iva tat
ca yuktatvam saṃcintya kiṃcit uttaram na abravīt
34. O great king, Drona's son, thus addressed, as if smiling, carefully considered the appropriateness of that statement. He then gave no reply.
अनुक्त्वा च ततः किंचिच्छरवर्षेण पाण्डवम् ।
छादयामास समरे क्रुद्धोऽन्तक इव प्रजाः ॥३५॥
35. anuktvā ca tataḥ kiṁciccharavarṣeṇa pāṇḍavam ,
chādayāmāsa samare kruddho'ntaka iva prajāḥ.
35. anuktvā ca tataḥ kiṃcit śaravarṣeṇa pāṇḍavam
chādayāmāsa samare kruddhaḥ antakaḥ iva prajāḥ
35. ca tataḥ kiṃcit anuktvā kruddhaḥ samare
śaravarṣeṇa pāṇḍavam antakaḥ iva prajāḥ chādayāmāsa
35. And then, without saying anything further, enraged, he covered the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) in battle with a shower of arrows, just as Antaka (the god of death) overwhelms living beings.
संछाद्यमानस्तु तदा द्रोणपुत्रेण मारिष ।
पार्थोऽपयातः शीघ्रं वै विहाय महतीं चमूम् ॥३६॥
36. saṁchādyamānastu tadā droṇaputreṇa māriṣa ,
pārtho'payātaḥ śīghraṁ vai vihāya mahatīṁ camūm.
36. saṃchādyamānaḥ tu tadā droṇaputreṇa māriṣa
pārthaḥ apayātaḥ śīghram vai vihāya mahatīm camūm
36. māriṣa tadā droṇaputreṇa saṃchādyamānaḥ pārthaḥ
mahatīm camūm vihāya śīghram vai apayātaḥ
36. O revered one, at that time Arjuna (Pārtha), being overpowered by Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā), quickly retreated, abandoning his large army.
अपयाते ततस्तस्मिन्धर्मपुत्रे युधिष्ठिरे ।
द्रोणपुत्रः स्थितो राजन्प्रत्यादेशान्महात्मनः ॥३७॥
37. apayāte tatastasmindharmaputre yudhiṣṭhire ,
droṇaputraḥ sthito rājanpratyādeśānmahātmanaḥ.
37. apayāte tatas tasmin dharmaputre yudhiṣṭhire
droṇaputraḥ sthitaḥ rājan pratyādeśāt mahātmanaḥ

37. O King, when Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma (dharma), had thus departed, Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā) remained, following the command of the great-souled one.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा त्यक्त्वा द्रौणिं महाहवे ।
प्रययौ तावकं सैन्यं युक्तः क्रूराय कर्मणे ॥३८॥
38. tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā tyaktvā drauṇiṁ mahāhave ,
prayayau tāvakaṁ sainyaṁ yuktaḥ krūrāya karmaṇe.
38. tatas yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājā tyaktvā droṇim mahāhave
prayayau tāvakam sainyam yuktaḥ krūrāya karmaṇe
38. tatas rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ mahāhave droṇim tyaktvā
krūrāya karmaṇe yuktaḥ tāvakam sainyam prayayau
38. Then King Yudhiṣṭhira, leaving Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā) in the great battle, advanced upon your army, ready for a cruel action (karma).
