धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
यस्य वै नानृता वाचः प्रवृत्ता अनुशुश्रुमः ।
त्रैलोक्यमपि तस्य स्याद्योद्धा यस्य धनंजयः ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
yasya vai nānṛtā vācaḥ pravṛttā anuśuśrumaḥ ,
trailokyamapi tasya syādyoddhā yasya dhanaṁjayaḥ.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "We have heard that his words are certainly never false. Even the three worlds would be his (to command), if Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) is his warrior."
तस्यैव च न पश्यामि युधि गाण्डीवधन्वनः ।
अनिशं चिन्तयानोऽपि यः प्रतीयाद्रथेन तम् ॥२॥
2. tasyaiva ca na paśyāmi yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ ,
aniśaṁ cintayāno'pi yaḥ pratīyādrathena tam.
2. tasya eva ca na paśyāmi yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ
| aniśam cintayānaḥ api yaḥ pratīyāt rathena tam
2. And I do not see anyone in battle who, even if they constantly pondered, could oppose him—the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna)—while riding a chariot.
अस्यतः कर्णिनालीकान्मार्गणान्हृदयच्छिदः ।
प्रत्येता न समः कश्चिद्युधि गाण्डीवधन्वनः ॥३॥
3. asyataḥ karṇinālīkānmārgaṇānhṛdayacchidaḥ ,
pratyetā na samaḥ kaścidyudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ.
3. asyataḥ karṇinālīkān mārgaṇān hṛdayacchidaḥ |
pratyetā na samaḥ kaścit yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ
3. No one is an equal opponent in battle to the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna), who shoots barbed arrows and special reed-like arrows that pierce the heart.
द्रोणकर्णौ प्रतीयातां यदि वीरौ नरर्षभौ ।
माहात्म्यात्संशयो लोके न त्वस्ति विजयो मम ॥४॥
4. droṇakarṇau pratīyātāṁ yadi vīrau nararṣabhau ,
māhātmyātsaṁśayo loke na tvasti vijayo mama.

māhātmyāt saṃśayaḥ loke na tu asti vijayaḥ mama
4. If the heroic Drona and Karna, those two foremost among men, were to enter battle, their greatness would certainly cause doubt in the world [as to the outcome]. However, for me, there is no victory.
घृणी कर्णः प्रमादी च आचार्यः स्थविरो गुरुः ।
समर्थो बलवान्पार्थो दृढधन्वा जितक्लमः ।
भवेत्सुतुमुलं युद्धं सर्वशोऽप्यपराजयः ॥५॥
5. ghṛṇī karṇaḥ pramādī ca ācāryaḥ sthaviro guruḥ ,
samartho balavānpārtho dṛḍhadhanvā jitaklamaḥ ,
bhavetsutumulaṁ yuddhaṁ sarvaśo'pyaparājayaḥ.
5. ghṛṇī karṇaḥ pramādī ca ācāryaḥ
sthaviraḥ guruḥ samarthaḥ balavān pārthaḥ
dṛḍhadhanvā jitaklamaḥ bhavet
sutumulam yuddham sarvaśaḥ api aparājayaḥ
5. Karna is compassionate and careless, and the preceptor (ācārya) is old and a venerable teacher (guru). However, Partha (Arjuna) is capable, strong, possesses a firm bow, and has overcome exhaustion. Therefore, the battle would be extremely fierce, and [for us, there would be] complete defeat.
सर्वे ह्यस्त्रविदः शूराः सर्वे प्राप्ता महद्यशः ।
अपि सर्वामरैश्वर्यं त्यजेयुर्न पुनर्जयम् ।
वधे नूनं भवेच्छान्तिस्तयोर्वा फल्गुनस्य वा ॥६॥
6. sarve hyastravidaḥ śūrāḥ sarve prāptā mahadyaśaḥ ,
api sarvāmaraiśvaryaṁ tyajeyurna punarjayam ,
vadhe nūnaṁ bhavecchāntistayorvā phalgunasya vā.
6. sarve hi astravidaḥ śūrāḥ sarve prāptā
mahat yaśaḥ api sarvāmaraaiśvaryam
tyajeyuḥ na punaḥ jayam vadhe nūnam
bhavet śāntiḥ tayoḥ vā phalgunasya vā
6. Indeed, all of them are experts in weapons and courageous warriors; all have achieved great renown. They would even forsake the dominion of all the gods, but never their victory. Therefore, peace (śānti) would surely come only with the death of either [Drona and Karna] or of Arjuna.
न तु जेतार्जुनस्यास्ति हन्ता चास्य न विद्यते ।
मन्युस्तस्य कथं शाम्येन्मन्दान्प्रति य उत्थितः ॥७॥
7. na tu jetārjunasyāsti hantā cāsya na vidyate ,
manyustasya kathaṁ śāmyenmandānprati ya utthitaḥ.
7. na tu jetā arjunasya asti hantā ca asya na vidyate
manyuḥ tasya katham śāmyet mandān prati yaḥ utthitaḥ
7. There is no one who can conquer Arjuna, nor is there anyone who can kill him. How, then, can his wrath (manyu), which has been aroused against the foolish [Kauravas], ever be appeased?
अन्येऽप्यस्त्राणि जानन्ति जीयन्ते च जयन्ति च ।
एकान्तविजयस्त्वेव श्रूयते फल्गुनस्य ह ॥८॥
8. anye'pyastrāṇi jānanti jīyante ca jayanti ca ,
ekāntavijayastveva śrūyate phalgunasya ha.
8. anye api astrāṇi jānanti jīyante ca jayanti ca
ekāntavijayaḥ tu eva śrūyate phālgunasya ha
8. Others also know and use weapons; sometimes they are defeated and sometimes they conquer. However, an exclusive victory is indeed heard only concerning Arjuna (Phalguna).
त्रयस्त्रिंशत्समाहूय खाण्डवेऽग्निमतर्पयत् ।
जिगाय च सुरान्सर्वान्नास्य वेद्मि पराजयम् ॥९॥
9. trayastriṁśatsamāhūya khāṇḍave'gnimatarpayat ,
jigāya ca surānsarvānnāsya vedmi parājayam.
9. trayastriṃśat samāhūya khāṇḍave agnim atarpayat
jigāya ca surān sarvān na asya vedmi parājayam
9. Having invoked the thirty-three (gods) and appeased the fire god (Agni) in the Khāṇḍava forest, he conquered all the gods. I do not know of his defeat.
यस्य यन्ता हृषीकेशः शीलवृत्तसमो युधि ।
ध्रुवस्तस्य जयस्तात यथेन्द्रस्य जयस्तथा ॥१०॥
10. yasya yantā hṛṣīkeśaḥ śīlavṛttasamo yudhi ,
dhruvastasya jayastāta yathendrasya jayastathā.
10. yasya yantā hṛṣīkeśaḥ śīlavṛttasamaḥ yudhi dhruvaḥ
tasya jayaḥ tāta yathā indrasya jayaḥ tathā
10. O dear one, for whom Hrishikesha (Kṛṣṇa) is the charioteer, and whose conduct and character are perfectly steadfast in battle, his victory is certain, just as the victory of Indra is.
कृष्णावेकरथे यत्तावधिज्यं गाण्डिवं धनुः ।
युगपत्त्रीणि तेजांसि समेतान्यनुशुश्रुमः ॥११॥
11. kṛṣṇāvekarathe yattāvadhijyaṁ gāṇḍivaṁ dhanuḥ ,
yugapattrīṇi tejāṁsi sametānyanuśuśrumaḥ.
11. kṛṣṇau ekarathe yattau adhijyam gāṇḍivam dhanuḥ
yugapat trīṇi tejāṃsi sametāni anuśuśrumaḥ
11. We have heard that when the two Kṛṣṇas (Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna), prepared in a single chariot with the Gāṇḍīva bow strung, are present, it is as if three splendors are united at once.
नैव नोऽस्ति धनुस्तादृङ्न योद्धा न च सारथिः ।
तच्च मन्दा न जानन्ति दुर्योधनवशानुगाः ॥१२॥
12. naiva no'sti dhanustādṛṅna yoddhā na ca sārathiḥ ,
tacca mandā na jānanti duryodhanavaśānugāḥ.
12. na eva naḥ asti dhanuḥ tādṛk na yoddhā na ca sāradhiḥ
tat ca mandāḥ na jānanti duryodhanavaśānugāḥ
12. Indeed, we do not possess such a bow, nor such a warrior, nor such a charioteer. Yet, those dull-witted followers of Duryodhana do not comprehend this.
शेषयेदशनिर्दीप्तो निपतन्मूर्ध्नि संजय ।
न तु शेषं शराः कुर्युरस्तास्तात किरीटिना ॥१३॥
13. śeṣayedaśanirdīpto nipatanmūrdhni saṁjaya ,
na tu śeṣaṁ śarāḥ kuryurastāstāta kirīṭinā.
13. śeṣayet aśaniḥ dīptaḥ nipatan mūrdhni sañjaya
na tu śeṣam śarāḥ kuryuḥ astāḥ tāta kirīṭinā
13. O Sanjaya, even a blazing thunderbolt falling upon one's head would still leave a remnant. But, O dear one, the arrows released by Arjuna (Kirīṭin) would leave no trace.
अपि चास्यन्निवाभाति निघ्नन्निव च फल्गुनः ।
उद्धरन्निव कायेभ्यः शिरांसि शरवृष्टिभिः ॥१४॥
14. api cāsyannivābhāti nighnanniva ca phalgunaḥ ,
uddharanniva kāyebhyaḥ śirāṁsi śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ.
14. api ca asyan iva ābhāti nighnan iva ca phalgunaḥ
uddharan iva kāyebhyaḥ śirāṃsi śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ
14. Moreover, Phalguna (Arjuna) appears to be simultaneously shooting and striking, as if tearing heads from bodies with his incessant showers of arrows.
अपि बाणमयं तेजः प्रदीप्तमिव सर्वतः ।
गाण्डीवेद्धं दहेताजौ पुत्राणां मम वाहिनीम् ॥१५॥
15. api bāṇamayaṁ tejaḥ pradīptamiva sarvataḥ ,
gāṇḍīveddhaṁ dahetājau putrāṇāṁ mama vāhinīm.
15. api bāṇamayam tejaḥ pradīptam iva sarvataḥ
gāṇḍīveddham dahet ājau putrāṇām mama vāhinīm
15. Furthermore, that fiery energy, composed of arrows and blazing on all sides, kindled by the Gaṇḍīva (bow), would burn my sons' army in battle.
अपि सा रथघोषेण भयार्ता सव्यसाचिनः ।
वित्रस्ता बहुला सेना भारती प्रतिभाति मे ॥१६॥
16. api sā rathaghoṣeṇa bhayārtā savyasācinaḥ ,
vitrastā bahulā senā bhāratī pratibhāti me.
16. api sā rathaghoṣeṇa bhayārtā savyasācinaḥ
vitrastā bahulā senā bhāratī pratibhāti me
16. Indeed, that vast army of the Bhāratas, greatly terrified and afflicted with fear by the sound of Arjuna's chariot, appears to me.
यथा कक्षं दहत्यग्निः प्रवृद्धः सर्वतश्चरन् ।
महार्चिरनिलोद्धूतस्तद्वद्धक्ष्यति मामकान् ॥१७॥
17. yathā kakṣaṁ dahatyagniḥ pravṛddhaḥ sarvataścaran ,
mahārciraniloddhūtastadvaddhakṣyati māmakān.
17. yathā kakṣam dahati agniḥ pravṛddhaḥ sarvataḥ caran
mahāarciḥ aniloddhūtaḥ tadvat dhakṣyati māmakān
17. Just as a mighty fire, fanned by the wind with great flames and spreading everywhere, burns a thicket of dry grass, so too will he consume my kinsmen.
यदोद्वमन्निशितान्बाणसंघान्स्थाताततायी समरे किरीटी ।
सृष्टोऽन्तकः सर्वहरो विधात्रा यथा भवेत्तद्वदवारणीयः ॥१८॥
18. yadodvamanniśitānbāṇasaṁghā;nsthātātatāyī samare kirīṭī ,
sṛṣṭo'ntakaḥ sarvaharo vidhātrā; yathā bhavettadvadavāraṇīyaḥ.
18. yadā udvaman niśitān bāṇasaṃghān
sthātā ātatāyī samare kirīṭī
sṛṣṭaḥ antakaḥ sarvaharaḥ vidhātrā
yathā bhavet tadvat avāraṇīyaḥ
18. When the crowned one (Arjuna) stands in battle as an aggressor (ātatāyī), spewing forth multitudes of sharp arrows, he will be like the all-destroying Yama (antaka) created by the Creator (vidhātrā), truly irresistible.
यदा ह्यभीक्ष्णं सुबहून्प्रकाराञ्श्रोतास्मि तानावसथे कुरूणाम् ।
तेषां समन्ताच्च तथा रणाग्रे क्षयः किलायं भरतानुपैति ॥१९॥
19. yadā hyabhīkṣṇaṁ subahūnprakārā;ñśrotāsmi tānāvasathe kurūṇām ,
teṣāṁ samantācca tathā raṇāgre; kṣayaḥ kilāyaṁ bharatānupaiti.
19. yadā hi abhīkṣṇam subahūn prakārān
śrotā asmi tān āvasathe kurūṇām
teṣām samantāt ca tathā raṇāgre
kṣayaḥ kila ayam bharatān upaiti
19. When I frequently hear of their numerous deeds in the dwelling of the Kurus, and similarly, at the forefront of battle, this destruction will surely befall these Bhāratas.
