वैशंपायन उवाच ।
मार्कण्डेयमृषयः पाण्डवाश्च पर्यपृच्छन् ।
अस्ति कश्चिद्भवतश्चिरजाततर इति ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
mārkaṇḍeyamṛṣayaḥ pāṇḍavāśca paryapṛcchan ,
asti kaścidbhavataścirajātatara iti.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca mārkaṇḍeyam ṛṣayaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ ca
paryapṛcchan asti kaścit bhavataḥ cirajātataraḥ iti
1. Vaiśampāyana said: 'The sages and the Pāṇḍavas questioned Mārkaṇḍeya, asking, "Is there anyone older than you?"'
स तानुवाच ।
अस्ति खलु राजर्षिरिन्द्रद्युम्नो नाम क्षीणपुण्यस्त्रिदिवात्प्रच्युतः ।
कीर्तिस्ते व्युच्छिन्नेति ।
स मामुपातिष्ठत् ।
अथ प्रत्यभिजानाति मां भवानिति ॥२॥
2. sa tānuvāca ,
asti khalu rājarṣirindradyumno nāma kṣīṇapuṇyastridivātpracyutaḥ ,
kīrtiste vyucchinneti ,
sa māmupātiṣṭhat ,
atha pratyabhijānāti māṁ bhavāniti.
2. sa tān uvāca asti khalu rājarṣiḥ indradyumnaḥ
nāma kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ tridivāt pracyutaḥ
kīrtiḥ te vyucchinnā iti sa mām upātiṣṭhat
atha pratyabhijānāti mām bhavān iti
2. He (Mārkaṇḍeya) said to them: 'Indeed, there is a royal sage named Indradyumna, whose merit (puṇya) was exhausted, and who had fallen from heaven. As his fame was extinguished, he approached me and asked, "Does Your Honor recognize me?"'
तमहमब्रुवम् ।
न वयं रासायनिकाः शरीरोपतापेनात्मनः समारभामहेऽर्थानामनुष्ठानम् ॥३॥
3. tamahamabruvam ,
na vayaṁ rāsāyanikāḥ śarīropatāpenātmanaḥ samārabhāmahe'rthānāmanuṣṭhānam.
3. tam aham abruvam na vayam rāsāyanikāḥ śarīropatāpena
ātmanaḥ samārabhāmahe arthānām anuṣṭhānam
3. I said to him, 'We are not alchemists who undertake the pursuit of material goals by harming our own selves (ātman).'
अस्ति खलु हिमवति प्राकारकर्णो नामोलूकः ।
स भवन्तं यदि जानीयात् ।
प्रकृष्टे चाध्वनि हिमवान् ।
तत्रासौ प्रतिवसतीति ॥४॥
4. asti khalu himavati prākārakarṇo nāmolūkaḥ ,
sa bhavantaṁ yadi jānīyāt ,
prakṛṣṭe cādhvani himavān ,
tatrāsau prativasatīti.
4. asti khalu himavati prākārakarṇaḥ
nāma ulūkaḥ sa bhavantam yadi
jānīyāt prakṛṣṭe ca adhvani
himavān tatra asau prativasati iti
4. Indeed, there is an owl named Prākārakarṇa in the Himalayas. If he were to know you... (consider that) the Himalayas are very far away; he dwells there.
स मामश्वो भूत्वा
तत्रावहद्यत्र बभूवोलूकः ॥५॥
5. sa māmaśvo bhūtvā
tatrāvahadyatra babhūvolūkaḥ.
5. sa mām aśvaḥ bhūtvā tatra
avahat yatra babhūva ulūkaḥ
5. He, transforming into a horse, carried me to the place where the owl resided.
अथैनं स राजर्षिः पर्यपृच्छत् ।
प्रत्यभिजानाति मां भवानिति ॥६॥
6. athainaṁ sa rājarṣiḥ paryapṛcchat ,
pratyabhijānāti māṁ bhavāniti.
6. atha enam sa rājarṣiḥ paryapṛcchat
pratyabhijānāti mām bhavān iti
6. Then that royal sage questioned him, saying, 'Do you recognize me?'
स मुहूर्तं ध्यात्वाब्रवीदेनम् ।
नाभिजाने भवन्तमिति ॥७॥
7. sa muhūrtaṁ dhyātvābravīdenam ,
nābhijāne bhavantamiti.
7. sa muhūrtaṃ dhyātvā abravīt
enam na abhijāne bhavantam iti
7. He meditated (dhyāna) for a moment and then said to him, "I do not know you."
स एवमुक्तो राजर्षिरिन्द्रद्युम्नः पुनस्तमुलूकमब्रवीत् ।
अस्ति कश्चिद्भवतश्चिरजाततर इति ॥८॥
8. sa evamukto rājarṣirindradyumnaḥ punastamulūkamabravīt ,
asti kaścidbhavataścirajātatara iti.
8. sa evam uktaḥ rājarṣiḥ indradyumnaḥ punaḥ tam ulūkam
abravīt asti kaścit bhavataḥ cirajātataraḥ iti
8. That royal sage (rājarṣi) Indradyumna, thus addressed, again said to that owl, "Is there anyone older than you?"
स एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीदेनम् ।
अस्ति खल्विन्द्रद्युम्नसरो नाम ।
तस्मिन्नाडीजङ्घो नाम बकः प्रतिवसति ।
सोऽस्मत्तश्चिरजाततरः ।
तं पृच्छेति ॥९॥
9. sa evamukto'bravīdenam ,
asti khalvindradyumnasaro nāma ,
tasminnāḍījaṅgho nāma bakaḥ prativasati ,
so'smattaścirajātataraḥ ,
taṁ pṛccheti.
9. sa evam uktaḥ abravīt enam asti khalu
indradyumnasaraḥ nāma tasmin
nāḍījaṅghaḥ nāma bakaḥ prativasati saḥ
asmattaḥ cirajātataraḥ tam pṛccha iti
9. Thus addressed, he said to him, "Indeed, there is a lake named Indradyumnasaras. In it resides a crane named Nāḍījaṅgha. He is older than us. Ask him."
तत इन्द्रद्युम्नो मां चोलूकं चादाय
तत्सरोऽगच्छद्यत्रासौ नाडीजङ्घो नाम बको बभूव ॥१०॥
10. tata indradyumno māṁ colūkaṁ cādāya
tatsaro'gacchadyatrāsau nāḍījaṅgho nāma bako babhūva.
10. tataḥ indradyumnaḥ mām ca ulūkam ca ādāya tat saraḥ
agacchat yatra asau nāḍījaṅghaḥ nāma bakaḥ babhūva
10. Then Indradyumna, taking both me and the owl, went to that lake where the crane named Nāḍījaṅgha lived.
सोऽस्माभिः पृष्टः ।
भवानिन्द्रद्युम्नं राजानं प्रत्यभिजानातीति ॥११॥
11. so'smābhiḥ pṛṣṭaḥ ,
bhavānindradyumnaṁ rājānaṁ pratyabhijānātīti.
11. saḥ asmābhiḥ pṛṣṭaḥ bhavān indradyumnaṃ
rājānaṃ pratyabhijānāti iti
11. He was asked by us, "Do you recognize King Indradyumna?"
स एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीन्मुहूर्तं ध्यात्वा ।
नाभिजानाम्यहमिन्द्रद्युम्नं राजानमिति ॥१२॥
12. sa evamukto'bravīnmuhūrtaṁ dhyātvā ,
nābhijānāmyahamindradyumnaṁ rājānamiti.
12. saḥ evaṃ uktaḥ abravīt muhūrtaṃ dhyātvā na
abhijānāmi ahaṃ indradyumnaṃ rājānaṃ iti
12. Being thus addressed, he thought for a moment, and said, "I do not recognize King Indradyumna."
ततः सोऽस्माभिः पृष्टः ।
अस्ति कश्चिदन्यो भवतश्चिरजाततर इति ॥१३॥
13. tataḥ so'smābhiḥ pṛṣṭaḥ ,
asti kaścidanyo bhavataścirajātatara iti.
13. tataḥ saḥ asmābhiḥ pṛṣṭaḥ asti kaścid
anyaḥ bhavataḥ cirajātataraḥ iti
13. Then he was asked by us, "Is there someone else older than you?"
स नोऽब्रवीदस्ति खल्विहैव सरस्यकूपारो नाम कच्छपः प्रतिवसति ।
स मत्तश्चिरजाततर इति ।
स यदि कथंचिदभिजानीयादिमं राजानं तमकूपारं पृच्छाम इति ॥१४॥
14. sa no'bravīdasti khalvihaiva sarasyakūpāro nāma kacchapaḥ prativasati ,
sa mattaścirajātatara iti ,
sa yadi kathaṁcidabhijānīyādimaṁ rājānaṁ tamakūpāraṁ pṛcchāma iti.
14. saḥ naḥ abravīt asti khalu iha eva sarasi
akūpāraḥ nāma kacchapaḥ prativasati saḥ mattaḥ
cirajātataraḥ iti saḥ yadi kathaṃcit abhijānīyāt
imaṃ rājānaṃ taṃ akūpāraṃ pṛcchāma iti
14. He told us, "Indeed, a tortoise named Akūpāra lives right here in the lake. He is much older than me. If he somehow recognizes this king, we will ask Akūpāra."
ततः स बकस्तमकूपारं कच्छपं विज्ञापयामास ।
अस्त्यस्माकमभिप्रेतं भवन्तं कंचिदर्थमभिप्रष्टुम् ।
साध्वागम्यतां तावदिति ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ sa bakastamakūpāraṁ kacchapaṁ vijñāpayāmāsa ,
astyasmākamabhipretaṁ bhavantaṁ kaṁcidarthamabhipraṣṭum ,
sādhvāgamyatāṁ tāvaditi.
15. tataḥ saḥ bakaḥ tam akūpāram kacchapam
vijñāpayāmāsa asti asmākam
abhipretam bhavantam kañcit artham
abhipraṣṭum sādhu āgamyatām tāvat iti
15. Then that crane addressed the tortoise Akūpāra, saying, 'We intend to ask you about a certain matter. Please approach for a moment.'
एतच्छ्रुत्वा स कच्छपस्तस्मात्सरस
उत्थायाभ्यगच्छद्यत्र तिष्ठामो वयं तस्य सरसस्तीरे ॥१६॥
16. etacchrutvā sa kacchapastasmātsarasa
utthāyābhyagacchadyatra tiṣṭhāmo vayaṁ tasya sarasastīre.
16. etat śrutvā saḥ kacchapaḥ tasmāt sarasaḥ utthāya
abhyagacchat yatra tiṣṭhāmaḥ vayam tasya sarasaḥ tīre
16. Having heard this, that tortoise rose from the lake and came to the bank of that same lake, where we were residing.
आगतं चैनं वयमपृच्छाम ।
भवानिन्द्रद्युम्नं राजानमभिजानातीति ॥१७॥
17. āgataṁ cainaṁ vayamapṛcchāma ,
bhavānindradyumnaṁ rājānamabhijānātīti.
17. āgatam ca enam vayam apṛcchāma bhavān
indradyumnam rājānam abhijānāti iti
17. And upon his arrival, we asked him, 'Do you know King Indradyumna?'
स मुहूर्तं ध्यात्वा बाष्पपूर्णनयन उद्विग्नहृदयो वेपमानो विसंज्ञकल्पः प्राञ्जलिरब्रवीत् ।
किमहमेनं न प्रत्यभिजानामि ।
अहं ह्यनेन सहस्रकृत्वः पूर्वमग्निचितिषूपहितपूर्वः ।
सरश्चेदमस्य दक्षिणादत्ताभिर्गोभिरतिक्रममाणाभिः कृतम् ।
अत्र चाहं प्रतिवसामीति ॥१८॥
18. sa muhūrtaṁ dhyātvā bāṣpapūrṇanayana udvignahṛdayo vepamāno visaṁjñakalpaḥ prāñjalirabravīt ,
kimahamenaṁ na pratyabhijānāmi ,
ahaṁ hyanena sahasrakṛtvaḥ pūrvamagnicitiṣūpahitapūrvaḥ ,
saraścedamasya dakṣiṇādattābhirgobhiratikramamāṇābhiḥ kṛtam ,
atra cāhaṁ prativasāmīti.
18. saḥ muhūrtam dhyātvā bāṣpapūrṇanayanaḥ udvignahṛdayaḥ vepamānaḥ visañjñakalpaḥ
prāñjaliḥ abravīt kim aham enam na pratyabhijānāmi aham hi anena
sahasrakṛtvaḥ pūrvam agnicitiṣu upahitapūrvaḥ saras ca idam asya
dakṣiṇādattābhiḥ gobhiḥ atikramamāṇābhiḥ kṛtam atra ca aham prativasāmi iti
18. He pondered for a moment, then, with eyes full of tears, a troubled heart, trembling, almost unconscious, and with folded hands, he said: 'How could I not recognize him? Indeed, I was placed by him thousands of times on the fire altars (yajñas) in the past. And this lake was formed by the cows, given by him as religious offerings (dakṣiṇā), as they passed by. And it is here that I reside.'
अथैतत्कच्छपेनोदाहृतं श्रुत्वा
समनन्तरं देवलोकाद्देवरथः प्रादुरासीत् ॥१९॥
19. athaitatkacchapenodāhṛtaṁ śrutvā
samanantaraṁ devalokāddevarathaḥ prādurāsīt.
19. atha etat kacchapena udāhṛtam śrutvā
samanantaram devalokāt devarathaḥ prādur āsīt
19. Then, having heard this narrated by the tortoise, immediately thereafter a divine chariot appeared from the world of the gods.
वाचश्चाश्रूयन्तेन्द्रद्युम्नं प्रति ।
प्रस्तुतस्ते स्वर्गः ।
यथोचितं स्थानमभिपद्यस्व ।
कीर्तिमानसि ।
अव्यग्रो याहीति ॥२०॥
20. vācaścāśrūyantendradyumnaṁ prati ,
prastutaste svargaḥ ,
yathocitaṁ sthānamabhipadyasva ,
kīrtimānasi ,
avyagro yāhīti.
20. vācaḥ ca aśrūyanta indradyumnam
prati prastutaḥ te svargaḥ
yathā ucitam sthānam abhipadyasva
kīrtimān asi avyagraḥ yāhi iti
20. And voices were heard addressing Indradyumna: 'Your heaven is ready. Attain your appropriate place. You are glorious (kīrtimān). Go, free from distraction (avyagra).'
दिवं स्पृशति भूमिं च शब्दः पुण्यस्य कर्मणः ।
यावत्स शब्दो भवति तावत्पुरुष उच्यते ॥२१॥
21. divaṁ spṛśati bhūmiṁ ca śabdaḥ puṇyasya karmaṇaḥ ,
yāvatsa śabdo bhavati tāvatpuruṣa ucyate.
21. divam spṛśati bhūmim ca śabdaḥ puṇyasya karmaṇaḥ
yāvat saḥ śabdaḥ bhavati tāvat puruṣaḥ ucyate
21. The renown (śabda) of virtuous action (karma) touches both heaven and earth. As long as that renown (śabda) exists, so long is a person (puruṣa) spoken of.
अकीर्तिः कीर्त्यते यस्य लोके भूतस्य कस्यचित् ।
पतत्येवाधमाँल्लोकान्यावच्छब्दः स कीर्त्यते ॥२२॥
22. akīrtiḥ kīrtyate yasya loke bhūtasya kasyacit ,
patatyevādhamāँllokānyāvacchabdaḥ sa kīrtyate.
22. akīrtiḥ kīrtyate yasya loke bhūtasya kasyacit
patati eva adhamān lokān yāvat śabdaḥ saḥ kīrtyate
22. If ill fame (akīrti) is spread about any being (bhūta) in the world, that being indeed falls to lower worlds as long as that (ill) report (śabda) is proclaimed.
तस्मात्कल्याणवृत्तः स्यादत्यन्ताय नरो भुवि ।
विहाय वृत्तं पापिष्ठं धर्ममेवाभिसंश्रयेत् ॥२३॥
23. tasmātkalyāṇavṛttaḥ syādatyantāya naro bhuvi ,
vihāya vṛttaṁ pāpiṣṭhaṁ dharmamevābhisaṁśrayet.
23. tasmāt kalyāṇavṛttaḥ syāt atyantāya naraḥ bhuvi
vihāya vṛttaṃ pāpiṣṭhaṃ dharmam eva abhisaṃśrayet
23. Therefore, a person on Earth should always be of virtuous conduct for permanent benefit. Abandoning the most sinful behavior, he should indeed take refuge in (dharma) righteous action.
इत्येतच्छ्रुत्वा स राजाब्रवीत् ।
तिष्ठ तावद्यावदिदानीमिमौ वृद्धौ यथास्थानं प्रतिपादयामीति ॥२४॥
24. ityetacchrutvā sa rājābravīt ,
tiṣṭha tāvadyāvadidānīmimau vṛddhau yathāsthānaṁ pratipādayāmīti.
24. iti etat śrutvā sa rājā abravīt tiṣṭha tāvat yāvat
idānīm imau vṛddhau yathāsthānam pratipādayāmi iti
24. Having heard this, that king said, "Wait a moment, until I now re-establish these two elders in their appropriate places."
स मां प्राकारकर्णं चोलूकं यथोचिते स्थाने प्रतिपाद्य
तेनैव यानेन संसिद्धो यथोचितं स्थानं प्रतिपन्नः ॥२५॥
25. sa māṁ prākārakarṇaṁ colūkaṁ yathocite sthāne pratipādya
tenaiva yānena saṁsiddho yathocitaṁ sthānaṁ pratipannaḥ.
25. sa mām prākārakarṇam ca ulūkam yathocite sthāne pratipādya
tena eva yānena saṃsiddhaḥ yathocitam sthānam pratipannaḥ
25. Having placed me, Prākārakarṇa, and the owl in their respective appropriate places, he, having successfully completed his task, reached his own appropriate place in that very same vehicle.
एतन्मयानुभूतं चिरजीविना दृष्टमिति
पाण्डवानुवाच मार्कण्डेयः ॥२६॥
26. etanmayānubhūtaṁ cirajīvinā
dṛṣṭamiti pāṇḍavānuvāca mārkaṇḍeyaḥ.
26. etat mayā anubhūtam cirajīvinā dṛṣṭam
iti pāṇḍavān uvāca mārkaṇḍeyaḥ
26. "This was experienced by me and seen by the long-lived one (Mārkaṇḍeya)," thus Mārkaṇḍeya said to the Pāṇḍavas.
पाण्डवाश्चोचुः प्रीताः ।
साधु ।
शोभनं कृतं भवता राजानमिन्द्रद्युम्नं स्वर्गलोकाच्च्युतं स्वे स्थाने स्वर्गे पुनः प्रतिपादयतेति ॥२७॥
27. pāṇḍavāścocuḥ prītāḥ ,
sādhu ,
śobhanaṁ kṛtaṁ bhavatā rājānamindradyumnaṁ svargalokāccyutaṁ sve sthāne svarge punaḥ pratipādayateti.
27. pāṇḍavāḥ ca ūcuḥ prītāḥ | sādhu |
śobhanam kṛtam bhavatā rājānam
indradyumnam svargalokāt cyutam sve
sthāne svarge punaḥ pratipādayata iti
27. The Pandavas, pleased, exclaimed, "Excellent! You have done a wonderful deed by restoring King Indradyumna, who had fallen from the celestial realm (svargaloka), back to his proper place in heaven (svarga)."
अथैनानब्रवीदसौ ।
ननु देवकीपुत्रेणापि कृष्णेन नरके मज्जमानो राजर्षिर्नृगस्तस्मात्कृच्छ्रात्समुद्धृत्य पुनः स्वर्गं प्रतिपादित इति ॥२८॥
28. athainānabravīdasau ,
nanu devakīputreṇāpi kṛṣṇena narake majjamāno rājarṣirnṛgastasmātkṛcchrātsamuddhṛtya punaḥ svargaṁ pratipādita iti.
28. atha enān abravīt asau | nanu
devakīputreṇa api kṛṣṇena narake majjamānaḥ
rājarṣiḥ nṛgaḥ tasmāt kṛcchrāt
samuddhṛtya punaḥ svargam pratipāditaḥ iti
28. Then he (Indra) said to them, "Indeed, was not the royal sage Nṛga, who was sinking in hell (naraka), also restored to heaven (svarga) by Kṛṣṇa, the son of Devakī, after being rescued from that great distress?"
