संजय उवाच ।
यथार्हसे पाण्डव तत्तथैव कुरून्कुरुश्रेष्ठ जनं च पृच्छसि ।
अनामयास्तात मनस्विनस्ते कुरुश्रेष्ठान्पृच्छसि पार्थ यांस्त्वम् ॥१॥

Sanjaya said: O Pāṇḍava, just as you are worthy, so indeed you inquire about the Kurus and about people. O best among the Kurus, O dear one, are those high-minded ones free from illness—those eminent Kurus about whom you, O Pārtha, inquire?
सन्त्येव वृद्धाः साधवो धार्तराष्ट्रे सन्त्येव पापाः पाण्डव तस्य विद्धि ।
दद्याद्रिपोश्चापि हि धार्तराष्ट्रः कुतो दायाँल्लोपयेद्ब्राह्मणानाम् ॥२॥
दद्याद्रिपोश्चापि हि धार्तराष्ट्रः कुतो दायाँल्लोपयेद्ब्राह्मणानाम् ॥२॥
2. santyeva vṛddhāḥ sādhavo dhārtarāṣṭre; santyeva pāpāḥ pāṇḍava tasya viddhi ,
dadyādripoścāpi hi dhārtarāṣṭraḥ; kuto dāyāँllopayedbrāhmaṇānām.

Indeed, there are old and virtuous men among Dhṛtarāṣṭra's followers. And indeed there are wicked ones too, O Pāṇḍava; understand this concerning him. Dhṛtarāṣṭra would certainly give even to his enemies; how then could he deprive Brahmins of their rightful shares?
यद्युष्माकं वर्ततेऽसौ न धर्म्यमद्रुग्धेषु द्रुग्धवत्तन्न साधु ।
मित्रध्रुक्स्याद्धृतराष्ट्रः सपुत्रो युष्मान्द्विषन्साधुवृत्तानसाधुः ॥३॥

3. yadyuṣmākaṁ vartate'sau na dharmya;madrugdheṣu drugdhavattanna sādhu ,
mitradhruksyāddhṛtarāṣṭraḥ saputro; yuṣmāndviṣansādhuvṛttānasādhuḥ.

yadi yuṣmākam vartate asau na dharmyam
adrugdheṣu drugdhavat tat na sādhu
mitradhruk syāt dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ saputraḥ
yuṣmān dviṣan sādhuvṛttān asādhuḥ
adrugdheṣu drugdhavat tat na sādhu
mitradhruk syāt dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ saputraḥ
yuṣmān dviṣan sādhuvṛttān asādhuḥ

If one's conduct, treating those who have not harmed as if they had harmed, is not in accordance with natural law (dharma), then that is not good. Dhṛtarāṣṭra, along with his son, would become a betrayer of friends, hating you who are of virtuous conduct; he would be unrighteous.
न चानुजानाति भृशं च तप्यते शोचत्यन्तः स्थविरोऽजातशत्रो ।
शृणोति हि ब्राह्मणानां समेत्य मित्रद्रोहः पातकेभ्यो गरीयान् ॥४॥
शृणोति हि ब्राह्मणानां समेत्य मित्रद्रोहः पातकेभ्यो गरीयान् ॥४॥
4. na cānujānāti bhṛśaṁ ca tapyate; śocatyantaḥ sthaviro'jātaśatro ,
śṛṇoti hi brāhmaṇānāṁ sametya; mitradrohaḥ pātakebhyo garīyān.

na ca anujānāti bhṛśam ca tapyate
śocati antaḥ sthaviraḥ ajātaśatro

śṛṇoti hi brāhmaṇānām sametya

O Ajātaśatru, the elder (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) neither approves nor endures, but grieves deeply within. Indeed, he has heard from the assembled Brahmins that treachery against a friend is more grievous than (other) sins.
स्मरन्ति तुभ्यं नरदेव संगमे युद्धे च जिष्णोश्च युधां प्रणेतुः ।
समुत्कृष्टे दुन्दुभिशङ्खशब्दे गदापाणिं भीमसेनं स्मरन्ति ॥५॥
समुत्कृष्टे दुन्दुभिशङ्खशब्दे गदापाणिं भीमसेनं स्मरन्ति ॥५॥
5. smaranti tubhyaṁ naradeva saṁgame; yuddhe ca jiṣṇośca yudhāṁ praṇetuḥ ,
samutkṛṣṭe dundubhiśaṅkhaśabde; gadāpāṇiṁ bhīmasenaṁ smaranti.

O King (naradeva), they recall you in encounters and in battle, and they recall Arjuna (Jishnu), the leader of wars. They remember Bhīmasena, holding his mace, amidst the intensely loud sound of drums and conches.
माद्रीसुतौ चापि रणाजिमध्ये सर्वा दिशः संपतन्तौ स्मरन्ति ।
सेनां वर्षन्तौ शरवर्षैरजस्रं महारथौ समरे दुष्प्रकम्प्यौ ॥६॥
सेनां वर्षन्तौ शरवर्षैरजस्रं महारथौ समरे दुष्प्रकम्प्यौ ॥६॥
6. mādrīsutau cāpi raṇājimadhye; sarvā diśaḥ saṁpatantau smaranti ,
senāṁ varṣantau śaravarṣairajasraṁ; mahārathau samare duṣprakampyau.

mādrīsutau ca api raṇājimadhye
sarvāḥ diśaḥ saṃpatantau smaranti

They also remember the two sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva) rushing in all directions within the battlefield. These two great warriors (mahārathau), unshakeable in battle, incessantly showered the army with torrents of arrows.
न त्वेव मन्ये पुरुषस्य राजन्ननागतं ज्ञायते यद्भविष्यम् ।
त्वं चेदिमं सर्वधर्मोपपन्नः प्राप्तः क्लेशं पाण्डव कृच्छ्ररूपम् ॥७॥
त्वं चेदिमं सर्वधर्मोपपन्नः प्राप्तः क्लेशं पाण्डव कृच्छ्ररूपम् ॥७॥
7. na tveva manye puruṣasya rāja;nnanāgataṁ jñāyate yadbhaviṣyam ,
tvaṁ cedimaṁ sarvadharmopapannaḥ; prāptaḥ kleśaṁ pāṇḍava kṛcchrarūpam.
tvaṁ cedimaṁ sarvadharmopapannaḥ; prāptaḥ kleśaṁ pāṇḍava kṛcchrarūpam.

na tu eva manye puruṣasya rājan
anāgatam jñāyate yat bhaviṣyam tvam
cet imam sarvadharmopapannaḥ

cet imam sarvadharmopapannaḥ

O King, I certainly do not believe that a person can know what is yet to come, what the future holds. O Pāṇḍava, if you, who are endowed with all aspects of natural law (dharma), have indeed fallen into this severe suffering (kleśa)...
त्वमेवैतत्सर्वमतश्च भूयः समीकुर्याः प्रज्ञयाजातशत्रो ।
न कामार्थं संत्यजेयुर्हि धर्मं पाण्डोः सुताः सर्व एवेन्द्रकल्पाः ॥८॥
न कामार्थं संत्यजेयुर्हि धर्मं पाण्डोः सुताः सर्व एवेन्द्रकल्पाः ॥८॥
8. tvamevaitatsarvamataśca bhūyaḥ; samīkuryāḥ prajñayājātaśatro ,
na kāmārthaṁ saṁtyajeyurhi dharmaṁ; pāṇḍoḥ sutāḥ sarva evendrakalpāḥ.
na kāmārthaṁ saṁtyajeyurhi dharmaṁ; pāṇḍoḥ sutāḥ sarva evendrakalpāḥ.

tvam eva etat sarvam ataḥ ca bhūyaḥ
samīkuryāḥ prajñayā ajātaśatro na
kāmārtham saṃtyajeyuḥ hi dharmam
pāṇḍoḥ sutāḥ sarve eva indrakalpāḥ
samīkuryāḥ prajñayā ajātaśatro na
kāmārtham saṃtyajeyuḥ hi dharmam
pāṇḍoḥ sutāḥ sarve eva indrakalpāḥ
8.
O Ajātaśatru, you alone should set all this right, and even more, by your wisdom. Indeed, all the sons of Pāṇḍu, who are like Indra, would certainly not abandon their natural law (dharma) for the sake of desire.
त्वमेवैतत्प्रज्ञयाजातशत्रो शमं कुर्या येन शर्माप्नुयुस्ते ।
धार्तराष्ट्राः पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयाश्च ये चाप्यन्ये पार्थिवाः संनिविष्टाः ॥९॥

9. tvamevaitatprajñayājātaśatro; śamaṁ kuryā yena śarmāpnuyuste ,
dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāśca; ye cāpyanye pārthivāḥ saṁniviṣṭāḥ.
dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāśca; ye cāpyanye pārthivāḥ saṁniviṣṭāḥ.
9.
tvam eva etat prajñayā ajātaśatro
śamam kuryāḥ yena śarma āpnuyuḥ te
dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāḥ ca ye
ca api anye pārthivāḥ saṃniviṣṭāḥ
śamam kuryāḥ yena śarma āpnuyuḥ te
dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāḥ ca ye
ca api anye pārthivāḥ saṃniviṣṭāḥ
9.
O Ajātaśatru, you alone should establish peace through your wisdom, so that all of them—the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the Pāṇḍavas, the Sṛñjayas, and any other kings who have assembled—may attain welfare.
यन्माब्रवीद्धृतराष्ट्रो निशायामजातशत्रो वचनं पिता ते ।
सहामात्यः सहपुत्रश्च राजन्समेत्य तां वाचमिमां निबोध ॥१०॥

10. yanmābravīddhṛtarāṣṭro niśāyā;majātaśatro vacanaṁ pitā te ,
sahāmātyaḥ sahaputraśca rāja;nsametya tāṁ vācamimāṁ nibodha.
sahāmātyaḥ sahaputraśca rāja;nsametya tāṁ vācamimāṁ nibodha.

yat mā abravīt dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ
niśāyām ajātaśatro vacanam pitā te
saha āmātyaḥ saha putraḥ ca
rājan sametya tām vācam imām nibodha
niśāyām ajātaśatro vacanam pitā te
saha āmātyaḥ saha putraḥ ca
rājan sametya tām vācam imām nibodha
10.
O Ajātaśatru, listen to what your father Dhṛtarāṣṭra said to me at night. O King, having gathered with his ministers and sons, understand these words.
