युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
कीदृशे पुरुषे तात स्त्रीषु वा भरतर्षभ ।
श्रीः पद्मा वसते नित्यं तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१॥

1. Yudhishthira said: "O dear one, O best of the Bharatas, in what kind of man or among what kind of women does prosperity (śrī), symbolized by Padma, always reside? Tell me that, O grandfather."
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि यथादृष्टं यथाश्रुतम् ।
रुक्मिणी देवकीपुत्रसंनिधौ पर्यपृच्छत ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atra te vartayiṣyāmi yathādṛṣṭaṁ yathāśrutam ,
rukmiṇī devakīputrasaṁnidhau paryapṛcchata.

2. Bhishma said: "In this matter, I shall relate to you what I have seen and what I have heard. Rukmini (Rukmiṇī) inquired thoroughly in the presence of Devaki's son (Kṛṣṇa)."
नारायणस्याङ्कगतां ज्वलन्तीं दृष्ट्वा श्रियं पद्मसमानवक्त्राम् ।
कौतूहलाद्विस्मितचारुनेत्रा पप्रच्छ माता मकरध्वजस्य ॥३॥
3. nārāyaṇasyāṅkagatāṁ jvalantīṁ; dṛṣṭvā śriyaṁ padmasamānavaktrām ,
kautūhalādvismitacārunetrā; papraccha mātā makaradhvajasya.

3. Seeing the radiant Śrī, whose face resembled a lotus, seated on Narayana's lap, the mother of Makardhvaja (Kāma), with wonderfully beautiful eyes, asked out of curiosity.
कानीह भूतान्युपसेवसे त्वं संतिष्ठती कानि न सेवसे त्वम् ।
तानि त्रिलोकेश्वरभूतकान्ते तत्त्वेन मे ब्रूहि महर्षिकन्ये ॥४॥
4. kānīha bhūtānyupasevase tvaṁ; saṁtiṣṭhatī kāni na sevase tvam ,
tāni trilokeśvarabhūtakānte; tattvena me brūhi maharṣikanye.
4. kāni iha bhūtāni upasevase tvam
saṃtiṣṭhatī kāni na sevase
tvam tāni trilokeśvarabhūtakānte
tattvena me brūhi maharṣikanye

4. O beloved consort of the Lord of the three worlds, O daughter of the great sage, please tell me truly: Which beings do you indwell and bless, and which ones do you not?
एवं तदा श्रीरभिभाष्यमाणा देव्या समक्षं गरुडध्वजस्य ।
उवाच वाक्यं मधुराभिधानं मनोहरं चन्द्रमुखी प्रसन्ना ॥५॥
5. evaṁ tadā śrīrabhibhāṣyamāṇā; devyā samakṣaṁ garuḍadhvajasya ,
uvāca vākyaṁ madhurābhidhānaṁ; manoharaṁ candramukhī prasannā.
5. evam tadā śrīḥ abhibhāṣyamāṇā
devyā samakṣam garuḍadhvajasya
uvāca vākyam madhurābhidhānam
manoharam candramukhī prasannā
5. tadā evam devyā garuḍadhvajasya

5. Then, the serene, moon-faced Śrī, being thus addressed by the goddess (Rati) in the presence of Garuḍadhvaja (Viṣṇu), spoke words that were sweet-sounding and enchanting.
वसामि सत्ये सुभगे प्रगल्भे दक्षे नरे कर्मणि वर्तमाने ।
नाकर्मशीले पुरुषे वसामि न नास्तिके सांकरिके कृतघ्ने ।
न भिन्नवृत्ते न नृशंसवृत्ते न चापि चौरे न गुरुष्वसूये ॥६॥
6. vasāmi satye subhage pragalbhe; dakṣe nare karmaṇi vartamāne ,
nākarmaśīle puruṣe vasāmi; na nāstike sāṁkarike kṛtaghne ,
na bhinnavṛtte na nṛśaṁsavṛtte; na cāpi caure na guruṣvasūye.
6. vasāmi satye subhage pragalbhe dakṣe nare
karmaṇi vartamāne na akarmaśīle puruṣe vasāmi na
nāstike sāṃkarike kṛtaghne na bhinnavṛtte na
nṛśaṃsavṛtte na ca api caure na guruṣu asūye
6. satye subhage pragalbhe dakṣe karmaṇi vartamāne
nare vasāmi na akarmaśīle puruṣe vasāmi na
nāstike sāṃkarike kṛtaghne na bhinnavṛtte na
nṛśaṃsavṛtte na ca api caure na guruṣu asūye
6. I reside in a person who is truthful, fortunate, self-assured, and capable, and who is diligently engaged in appropriate action (karma). I do not dwell in an idle person, nor in a non-believer, one who causes social disorder, or an ungrateful individual. I do not reside in those with corrupt conduct, cruel behavior, or even in a thief, nor in one who is envious of their preceptors (guru).
ये चाल्पतेजोबलसत्त्वसारा हृष्यन्ति कुप्यन्ति च यत्र तत्र ।
न देवि तिष्ठामि तथाविधेषु नरेषु संसुप्तमनोरथेषु ॥७॥
7. ye cālpatejobalasattvasārā; hṛṣyanti kupyanti ca yatra tatra ,
na devi tiṣṭhāmi tathāvidheṣu; nareṣu saṁsuptamanoratheṣu.
7. ye ca alpatejobalasattvasārāḥ hṛṣyanti kupyanti ca yatra
tatra na devi tiṣṭhāmi tathāvidheṣu nareṣu saṃsuptamanoratheṣu
7. O goddess, I do not reside among those men who possess little vigor, strength, or intrinsic nature (sattva), who become delighted or angry without proper cause, and whose aspirations are dormant.
यश्चात्मनि प्रार्थयते न किंचिद्यश्च स्वभावोपहतान्तरात्मा ।
तेष्वल्पसंतोषरतेषु नित्यं नरेषु नाहं निवसामि देवि ॥८॥
8. yaścātmani prārthayate na kiṁci;dyaśca svabhāvopahatāntarātmā ,
teṣvalpasaṁtoṣarateṣu nityaṁ; nareṣu nāhaṁ nivasāmi devi.
8. yaḥ ca ātmani prārthayate na
kiñcit yaḥ ca svabhāvopahatāntarātman
teṣu alpasantoṣarateṣu nityaṃ
nareṣu na aham nivasāmi devi
8. O goddess, I do not reside among those men who desire nothing for themselves, whose inner self (antarātman) is impaired by their own disposition (svabhāva), and who are perpetually satisfied with very little.
वसामि धर्मशीलेषु धर्मज्ञेषु महात्मसु ।
वृद्धसेविषु दान्तेषु सत्त्वज्ञेषु महात्मसु ॥९॥
9. vasāmi dharmaśīleṣu dharmajñeṣu mahātmasu ,
vṛddhaseviṣu dānteṣu sattvajñeṣu mahātmasu.

vṛddhaseviṣu dānteṣu sattvajñeṣu mahātmasu
9. I reside among those who are of righteous conduct (dharma), who understand natural law (dharma), among great souls (mahātman), among those who serve elders, among the self-controlled, and among those who know the essence (sattva) of things.
स्त्रीषु क्षान्तासु दान्तासु देवद्विजपरासु च ।
वसामि सत्यशीलासु स्वभावनिरतासु च ॥१०॥
10. strīṣu kṣāntāsu dāntāsu devadvijaparāsu ca ,
vasāmi satyaśīlāsu svabhāvaniratāsu ca.
10. strīṣu kṣāntāsu dāntāsu devadvijaparāsu
ca vasāmi satyaśīlāsu svabhāvaniratāsu ca
10. I reside among women who are patient, self-controlled, and devoted to gods and brahmins; and among those who are truthful in conduct and dedicated to their own intrinsic disposition (svabhāva).
प्रकीर्णभाण्डामनवेक्ष्यकारिणीं सदा च भर्तुः प्रतिकूलवादिनीम् ।
परस्य वेश्माभिरतामलज्जामेवंविधां स्त्रीं परिवर्जयामि ॥११॥
11. prakīrṇabhāṇḍāmanavekṣyakāriṇīṁ; sadā ca bhartuḥ pratikūlavādinīm ,
parasya veśmābhiratāmalajjā;mevaṁvidhāṁ strīṁ parivarjayāmi.
11. prakīrṇabhāṇḍām anavekṣyakāriṇīm
sadā ca bhartuḥ pratikūlavādinīm
parasya veśma abhiratām alajjām
evamvidhām strīm parivarjayāmi

11. I shun a woman who scatters household items, acts without thinking, always speaks contrary to her husband, delights in others' homes, and is shameless. Such a woman I abandon.
लोलामचोक्षामवलेहिनीं च व्यपेतधैर्यां कलहप्रियां च ।
निद्राभिभूतां सततं शयानामेवंविधां स्त्रीं परिवर्जयामि ॥१२॥
12. lolāmacokṣāmavalehinīṁ ca; vyapetadhairyāṁ kalahapriyāṁ ca ,
nidrābhibhūtāṁ satataṁ śayānā;mevaṁvidhāṁ strīṁ parivarjayāmi.

vyapetadhairyām kalahapriyām ca
nidrābhibhūtām satatam śayānām
evamvidhām strīm parivarjayāmi

12. I shun a woman who is fickle, unclean, gluttonous, devoid of courage, fond of quarrels, overcome by sleep, and constantly lying down. Such a woman I abandon.
सत्यासु नित्यं प्रियदर्शनासु सौभाग्ययुक्तासु गुणान्वितासु ।
वसामि नारीषु पतिव्रतासु कल्याणशीलासु विभूषितासु ॥१३॥
13. satyāsu nityaṁ priyadarśanāsu; saubhāgyayuktāsu guṇānvitāsu ,
vasāmi nārīṣu pativratāsu; kalyāṇaśīlāsu vibhūṣitāsu.

13. I dwell among women who are truthful, ever pleasing to the eye, endowed with good fortune, possessing virtues, devoted to their husbands, of noble conduct, and adorned.
यानेषु कन्यासु विभूषणेषु यज्ञेषु मेघेषु च वृष्टिमत्सु ।
वसामि फुल्लासु च पद्मिनीषु नक्षत्रवीथीषु च शारदीषु ॥१४॥
14. yāneṣu kanyāsu vibhūṣaṇeṣu; yajñeṣu megheṣu ca vṛṣṭimatsu ,
vasāmi phullāsu ca padminīṣu; nakṣatravīthīṣu ca śāradīṣu.

14. I dwell in chariots (or vehicles), in maidens, in ornaments, in (Vedic rituals) [yajña], and in clouds laden with rain. I also dwell in blooming lotus ponds and in autumnal constellations.
शैलेषु गोष्ठेषु तथा वनेषु सरःसु फुल्लोत्पलपङ्कजेषु ।
नदीषु हंसस्वननादितासु क्रौञ्चावघुष्टस्वरशोभितासु ॥१५॥
15. śaileṣu goṣṭheṣu tathā vaneṣu; saraḥsu phullotpalapaṅkajeṣu ,
nadīṣu haṁsasvananāditāsu; krauñcāvaghuṣṭasvaraśobhitāsu.

nadīṣu haṃsasvananāditāsu krauñcāvaghuṣṭasvaraśobhitāsu
15. In mountains, in pastures, and in forests; in lakes where lilies and lotuses are blooming; and in rivers resonant with the cries of swans and adorned with the sounds of curlews.
विस्तीर्णकूलह्रदशोभितासु तपस्विसिद्धद्विजसेवितासु ।
वसामि नित्यं सुबहूदकासु सिंहैर्गजैश्चाकुलितोदकासु ।
मत्ते गजे गोवृषभे नरेन्द्रे सिंहासने सत्पुरुषे च नित्यम् ॥१६॥
16. vistīrṇakūlahradaśobhitāsu; tapasvisiddhadvijasevitāsu ,
vasāmi nityaṁ subahūdakāsu; siṁhairgajaiścākulitodakāsu ,
matte gaje govṛṣabhe narendre; siṁhāsane satpuruṣe ca nityam.
16. vistīrṇakūlahraśobhitāsu tapasvisiddhadvijasevitāsu
vasāmi nityaṃ subahūdakāsu siṃhaiḥ
gajaiḥ ca ākulitodakāsu matte gaje
govṛṣabhe narendre siṃhāsane satpuruṣe ca nityaṃ
16. I always dwell in rivers adorned with vast banks and deep pools, frequented by ascetics, perfected beings (siddhas), and Brahmins (dvijas), abundant with water, and whose waters are agitated by lions and elephants. I am also always present in an intoxicated elephant, in a magnificent bull, in a king, on a royal throne, and in a virtuous person (satpuruṣa).
यस्मिन्गृहे हूयते हव्यवाहो गोब्राह्मणश्चार्च्यते देवताश्च ।
काले च पुष्पैर्बलयः क्रियन्ते तस्मिन्गृहे नित्यमुपैमि वासम् ॥१७॥
17. yasmingṛhe hūyate havyavāho; gobrāhmaṇaścārcyate devatāśca ,
kāle ca puṣpairbalayaḥ kriyante; tasmingṛhe nityamupaimi vāsam.
17. yasmin gṛhe hūyate havyavāhaḥ
gobrāhmaṇaḥ ca arcyate devatāḥ ca
kāle ca puṣpaiḥ balayaḥ kriyante
tasmin gṛhe nityaṃ upaimi vāsam
17. In which house the fire (havyavāha) receives oblations, and cows, Brahmins (dvijas), and deities are worshipped; and offerings are made with flowers at the proper time - in that house I always take up residence.
स्वाध्यायनित्येषु द्विजेषु नित्यं क्षत्रे च धर्माभिरते सदैव ।
वैश्ये च कृष्याभिरते वसामि शूद्रे च शुश्रूषणनित्ययुक्ते ॥१८॥
18. svādhyāyanityeṣu dvijeṣu nityaṁ; kṣatre ca dharmābhirate sadaiva ,
vaiśye ca kṛṣyābhirate vasāmi; śūdre ca śuśrūṣaṇanityayukte.
18. svādhyāyanityeṣu dvijeṣu nityaṃ
kṣatre ca dharmābhirate sadaiva
vaiśye ca kṛṣyābhirate vasāmi
śūdre ca śuśrūṣaṇanityayukte
18. I always dwell among Brahmins (dvijas) who are constantly engaged in their Vedic study (svādhyāya); and in the kṣatriya class, always devoted to natural law (dharma); and in the vaiśya class, devoted to agriculture; and in the śūdra class, constantly engaged in service.
नारायणे त्वेकमना वसामि सर्वेण भावेन शरीरभूता ।
तस्मिन्हि धर्मः सुमहान्निविष्टो ब्रह्मण्यता चात्र तथा प्रियत्वम् ॥१९॥
19. nārāyaṇe tvekamanā vasāmi; sarveṇa bhāvena śarīrabhūtā ,
tasminhi dharmaḥ sumahānniviṣṭo; brahmaṇyatā cātra tathā priyatvam.
19. nārāyaṇe tu ekamanāḥ vasāmi
sarveṇa bhāvena śarīrabhūtā tasmin
hi dharmaḥ sumahān niviṣṭaḥ
brahmaṇyatā ca atra tathā priyatvam
19. aham tu ekamanāḥ sarveṇa bhāvena
śarīrabhūtā nārāyaṇe vasāmi tasmin
hi sumahān dharmaḥ niviṣṭaḥ
atra ca tathā brahmaṇyatā priyatvam
19. With a singular mind, I dwell in Nārāyaṇa, having become a body (for him) with my whole being. Indeed, great natural law (dharma) is firmly established in Him, and so too are brahminhood and belovedness.
नाहं शरीरेण वसामि देवि नैवं मया शक्यमिहाभिधातुम् ।
यस्मिंस्तु भावेन वसामि पुंसि स वर्धते धर्मयशोर्थकामैः ॥२०॥
20. nāhaṁ śarīreṇa vasāmi devi; naivaṁ mayā śakyamihābhidhātum ,
yasmiṁstu bhāvena vasāmi puṁsi; sa vardhate dharmayaśorthakāmaiḥ.
20. na aham śarīreṇa vasāmi devi na
evam mayā śakyam iha abhidhātum
yasmin tu bhāvena vasāmi puṃsi
saḥ vardhate dharmayaśo'rthakāmaiḥ
20. devi aham śarīreṇa na vasāmi evam
iha mayā abhidhātum na śakyam
yasmin tu bhāvena puṃsi vasāmi
saḥ dharmayaśo'rthakāmaiḥ vardhate
20. O goddess, I do not dwell in the body, nor can I be thus described here. But in that supreme cosmic person (puruṣa) in whom I dwell with my entire being, he flourishes with natural law (dharma), fame, wealth, and desires.
