वैशंपायन उवाच ।
कुन्त्यास्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा भीष्मद्रोणौ महारथौ ।
दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमूचतुः शासनातिगम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
kuntyāstu vacanaṁ śrutvā bhīṣmadroṇau mahārathau ,
duryodhanamidaṁ vākyamūcatuḥ śāsanātigam.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: But having heard Kuntī's words, Bhīṣma and Droṇa, the great charioteers, spoke these words to Duryodhana, who was transgressing commands.
श्रुतं ते पुरुषव्याघ्र कुन्त्याः कृष्णस्य संनिधौ ।
वाक्यमर्थवदव्यग्रमुक्तं धर्म्यमनुत्तमम् ॥२॥
2. śrutaṁ te puruṣavyāghra kuntyāḥ kṛṣṇasya saṁnidhau ,
vākyamarthavadavyagramuktaṁ dharmyamanuttamam.

vākyam arthavat avyagram uktam dharmyam anuttamam

2. O tiger among men, you have heard Kuntī's meaningful, clear, righteous (dharma), and unsurpassed speech in the presence of Krishna.
तत्करिष्यन्ति कौन्तेया वासुदेवस्य संमतम् ।
न हि ते जातु शाम्येरन्नृते राज्येन कौरव ॥३॥
3. tatkariṣyanti kaunteyā vāsudevasya saṁmatam ,
na hi te jātu śāmyerannṛte rājyena kaurava.
3. tat kariṣyanti kaunteyāḥ vāsudevasya saṃmatam
na hi te jātu śāmyeran ṛte rājyena kaurava
3. kaunteyāḥ vāsudevasya saṃmatam tat hi kariṣyanti

3. The sons of Kunti (Kaunteyāḥ) will certainly fulfill Vasudeva's (Kṛṣṇa's) wish. Indeed, O Kaurava, they will never be pacified without regaining their kingdom.
क्लेशिता हि त्वया पार्था धर्मपाशसितास्तदा ।
सभायां द्रौपदी चैव तैश्च तन्मर्षितं तव ॥४॥
4. kleśitā hi tvayā pārthā dharmapāśasitāstadā ,
sabhāyāṁ draupadī caiva taiśca tanmarṣitaṁ tava.
4. kleśitāḥ hi tvayā pārthāḥ dharmapāśaśitāḥ tadā
sabhāyām draupadī ca eva taiḥ ca tat marṣitam tava
4. pārthāḥ dharmapāśaśitāḥ hi tvayā tadā kleśitāḥ ca

4. Indeed, the sons of Pṛthā (Pārthas), bound by the strictures of natural law (dharma), were tormented by you back then. And Draupadī, too, was similarly afflicted in the assembly. Yet, all of that was endured by them on your account.
कृतास्त्रं ह्यर्जुनं प्राप्य भीमं च कृतनिश्रमम् ।
गाण्डीवं चेषुधी चैव रथं च ध्वजमेव च ।
सहायं वासुदेवं च न क्षंस्यति युधिष्ठिरः ॥५॥
5. kṛtāstraṁ hyarjunaṁ prāpya bhīmaṁ ca kṛtaniśramam ,
gāṇḍīvaṁ ceṣudhī caiva rathaṁ ca dhvajameva ca ,
sahāyaṁ vāsudevaṁ ca na kṣaṁsyati yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
5. kṛtāstram hi arjunam prāpya bhīmam ca
kṛtaniśramam gāṇḍīvam ca iṣudhī ca
eva ratham ca dhvajam eva ca sahāyam
vāsudevam ca na kṣaṃsyati yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
5. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ hi kṛtāstram arjunam ca
kṛtaniśramam bhīmam gāṇḍīvam ca iṣudhī
ca eva ratham ca dhvajam ca eva
vāsudevam ca sahāyam prāpya na kṣaṃsyati
5. Having acquired Arjuna, who is adept with weapons, and Bhīma, who has completed his vow of retribution, along with the Gāṇḍīva bow, quivers, chariot, banner, and Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa) as an ally, Yudhiṣṭhira will certainly not forgive.
प्रत्यक्षं ते महाबाहो यथा पार्थेन धीमता ।
विराटनगरे पूर्वं सर्वे स्म युधि निर्जिताः ॥६॥
6. pratyakṣaṁ te mahābāho yathā pārthena dhīmatā ,
virāṭanagare pūrvaṁ sarve sma yudhi nirjitāḥ.
6. pratyakṣam te mahābāho yathā pārtena dhīmatā
virāṭanagare pūrvam sarve sma yudhi nirjitāḥ
6. mahābāho te pratyakṣam yathā pūrvam virāṭanagare
dhīmatā pārtena sarve yudhi nirjitāḥ sma
6. O mighty-armed one, it is clear to you how, in the city of Virāṭa, all of us were previously defeated in battle by the wise son of Pṛthā (Arjuna).
दानवान्घोरकर्माणो निवातकवचान्युधि ।
रौद्रमस्त्रं समाधाय दग्धवानस्त्रवह्निना ॥७॥
7. dānavānghorakarmāṇo nivātakavacānyudhi ,
raudramastraṁ samādhāya dagdhavānastravahninā.
7. dānavān ghorakarmāṇaḥ nivātakavacān yudhi
raudram astram samādhāya dagdhavān astravahninā
7. raudram astram samādhāya ghorakarmāṇaḥ
nivātakavacān dānavān yudhi astravahninā dagdhavān
7. Having fixed a formidable weapon, he incinerated the Nivātakavaca demons, who engaged in terrible deeds, in battle with the fire of that weapon.
कर्णप्रभृतयश्चेमे त्वं चापि कवची रथी ।
मोक्षिता घोषयात्रायां पर्याप्तं तन्निदर्शनम् ॥८॥
8. karṇaprabhṛtayaśceme tvaṁ cāpi kavacī rathī ,
mokṣitā ghoṣayātrāyāṁ paryāptaṁ tannidarśanam.
8. karṇaprabhṛtayaḥ ca ime tvam ca api kavacī rathī
mokṣitā ghoṣayātrāyām paryāptam tat nidarśanam
8. ime karṇaprabhṛtayaḥ ca tvam ca api kavacī rathī
ghoṣayātrāyām mokṣitā tat nidarśanam paryāptam
8. Karṇa and these others, and you, too, a warrior clad in armor and a charioteer, were rescued during the Ghoṣayātrā. That incident alone is sufficient evidence.
प्रशाम्य भरतश्रेष्ठ भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवैः ।
रक्षेमां पृथिवीं सर्वां मृत्योर्दंष्ट्रान्तरं गताम् ॥९॥
9. praśāmya bharataśreṣṭha bhrātṛbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
rakṣemāṁ pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ mṛtyordaṁṣṭrāntaraṁ gatām.
9. praśāmya bharataśreṣṭha bhrātṛbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavaiḥ
rakṣa imām pṛthivīm sarvām mṛtyoḥ daṃṣṭrāntaram gatām
9. bharataśreṣṭha pāṇḍavaiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha praśāmya
mṛtyoḥ daṃṣṭrāntaram gatām imām sarvām pṛthivīm rakṣa
9. O best of the Bhāratas, become reconciled with your Pāṇḍava brothers and protect this entire earth, which has fallen into the fangs of death.
ज्येष्ठो भ्राता धर्मशीलो वत्सलः श्लक्ष्णवाक्शुचिः ।
तं गच्छ पुरुषव्याघ्रं व्यपनीयेह किल्बिषम् ॥१०॥
10. jyeṣṭho bhrātā dharmaśīlo vatsalaḥ ślakṣṇavākśuciḥ ,
taṁ gaccha puruṣavyāghraṁ vyapanīyeha kilbiṣam.
10. jyeṣṭhaḥ bhrātā dharmaśīlaḥ vatsalaḥ ślakṣṇavāk śuciḥ
tam gaccha puruṣavyāghram vyapanīya iha kilbiṣam
10. jyeṣṭhaḥ bhrātā dharmaśīlaḥ vatsalaḥ ślakṣṇavāk śuciḥ
iha kilbiṣam vyapanīya tam puruṣavyāghram gaccha
10. Your elder brother (Yudhiṣṭhira) is righteous in his conduct (dharma), affectionate, soft-spoken, and pure. Therefore, abandon your offense here and go to that tiger among men.
दृष्टश्चेत्त्वं पाण्डवेन व्यपनीतशरासनः ।
प्रसन्नभ्रुकुटिः श्रीमान्कृता शान्तिः कुलस्य नः ॥११॥
11. dṛṣṭaścettvaṁ pāṇḍavena vyapanītaśarāsanaḥ ,
prasannabhrukuṭiḥ śrīmānkṛtā śāntiḥ kulasya naḥ.
11. dṛṣṭaḥ cet tvam pāṇḍavena vyapanītaśarāsanaḥ
prasannabhrukuṭiḥ śrīmān kṛtā śāntiḥ kulasya naḥ
11. cet tvam pāṇḍavena vyapanītaśarāsanaḥ
prasannabhrukuṭiḥ śrīmān dṛṣṭaḥ naḥ kulasya śāntiḥ kṛtā
11. If you are seen by Arjuna (pāṇḍava), with your bow laid aside, and appear gracious and serene, then peace will be established for our family.
तमभ्येत्य सहामात्यः परिष्वज्य नृपात्मजम् ।
अभिवादय राजानं यथापूर्वमरिंदम ॥१२॥
12. tamabhyetya sahāmātyaḥ pariṣvajya nṛpātmajam ,
abhivādaya rājānaṁ yathāpūrvamariṁdama.
12. tam abhyetya sahāmātyaḥ pariṣvajya nṛpātmajam
abhivādaya rājānam yathāpūrvam arimdam
12. arimdam sahāmātyaḥ tam nṛpātmajam abhyetya
pariṣvajya rājānam yathāpūrvam abhivādaya
12. O vanquisher of foes (arimdam), approach him (Yudhishthira) along with your ministers, embrace the son of the king (Yudhishthira), and greet the king (Yudhishthira) as you did before.
अभिवादयमानं त्वां पाणिभ्यां भीमपूर्वजः ।
प्रतिगृह्णातु सौहार्दात्कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१३॥
13. abhivādayamānaṁ tvāṁ pāṇibhyāṁ bhīmapūrvajaḥ ,
pratigṛhṇātu sauhārdātkuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
13. abhivādayamānam tvām pāṇibhyām bhīmapūrvajaḥ
pratigṛhṇātu sauhārdāt kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
13. bhīmapūrvajaḥ kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sauhārdāt
pāṇibhyām abhivādayamānam tvām pratigṛhṇātu
13. May Yudhishthira, the son of Kuntī (kuntīputra) and elder brother of Bhīma (bhīmapūrvaja), graciously receive your greeting with both hands, out of friendship.
सिंहस्कन्धोरुबाहुस्त्वां वृत्तायतमहाभुजः ।
परिष्वजतु बाहुभ्यां भीमः प्रहरतां वरः ॥१४॥
14. siṁhaskandhorubāhustvāṁ vṛttāyatamahābhujaḥ ,
pariṣvajatu bāhubhyāṁ bhīmaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ.
14. siṃhaskandhorubāhuḥ tvām vṛttāyatamahābhujaḥ
pariṣvajatu bāhubhyām bhīmaḥ praharatām varaḥ
14. siṃhaskandhorubāhuḥ vṛttāyatamahābhujaḥ praharatām
varaḥ bhīmaḥ tvām bāhubhyām pariṣvajatu
14. May Bhīma, who possesses shoulders like a lion's and powerful arms (siṃhaskandhorubāhu), and whose great arms are round and long (vṛttāyatamahābhuja), embrace you with his two arms; he is the best among warriors (praharatām vara).
सिंहग्रीवो गुडाकेशस्ततस्त्वां पुष्करेक्षणः ।
अभिवादयतां पार्थः कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ॥१५॥
15. siṁhagrīvo guḍākeśastatastvāṁ puṣkarekṣaṇaḥ ,
abhivādayatāṁ pārthaḥ kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ.
15. siṃhagrīvaḥ guḍākeśaḥ tataḥ tvām puṣkarekṣaṇaḥ
abhivādayatām pārthaḥ kuntīputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ
15. tataḥ siṃhagrīvaḥ guḍākeśaḥ puṣkarekṣaṇaḥ pārthaḥ
kuntīputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ tvām abhivādayatām
15. Then, let Arjuna, who possesses a lion-like neck, whose eyes resemble lotuses, the son of Pṛthā and Kuntī, the conqueror of wealth and conqueror of sleep, salute you.
आश्विनेयौ नरव्याघ्रौ रूपेणाप्रतिमौ भुवि ।
तौ च त्वां गुरुवत्प्रेम्णा पूजया प्रत्युदीयताम् ॥१६॥
16. āśvineyau naravyāghrau rūpeṇāpratimau bhuvi ,
tau ca tvāṁ guruvatpremṇā pūjayā pratyudīyatām.
16. āśvineyau naravyāghrau rūpeṇa apratimau bhuvi
tau ca tvām guruvat premṇā pūjayā pratyudīyatām
16. ca tau āśvineyau naravyāghrau rūpeṇa bhuvi
apratimau guruvat premṇā pūjayā tvām pratyudīyatām
16. And let those two sons of Aśvinī (āśvineyau), who are like tigers among men and are unequalled in beauty on earth, rise to greet you with love and honor as if to a guru.
मुञ्चन्त्वानन्दजाश्रूणि दाशार्हप्रमुखा नृपाः ।
संगच्छ भ्रातृभिः सार्धं मानं संत्यज्य पार्थिव ॥१७॥
17. muñcantvānandajāśrūṇi dāśārhapramukhā nṛpāḥ ,
saṁgaccha bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṁ mānaṁ saṁtyajya pārthiva.
17. muñcantu ānandaja aśrūṇi dāśārha-pramukhāḥ nṛpāḥ
saṅgaccha bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdham mānam saṃtyajya pārthiva
17. dāśārha-pramukhāḥ nṛpāḥ ānandaja aśrūṇi muñcantu
pārthiva mānam saṃtyajya bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdham saṅgaccha
17. Let the kings, headed by the Dāśārhas, shed tears born of joy. O prince, abandoning pride, unite with your brothers.
प्रशाधि पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां ततस्तं भ्रातृभिः सह ।
समालिङ्ग्य च हर्षेण नृपा यान्तु परस्परम् ॥१८॥
18. praśādhi pṛthivīṁ kṛtsnāṁ tatastaṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ,
samāliṅgya ca harṣeṇa nṛpā yāntu parasparam.
18. praśādhi pṛthivīm kṛtsnām tataḥ tam bhrātṛbhiḥ
saha samāliṅgya ca harṣeṇa nṛpāḥ yāntu parasparam
18. tvam (implied) bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
kṛtsnām pṛthivīm praśādhi ca
tataḥ nṛpāḥ harṣeṇa tam bhrātṛbhiḥ
saha samāliṅgya parasparam yāntu
18. Rule the entire earth with your brothers. And then, having joyfully embraced him along with his brothers, let the kings depart from one another.
अलं युद्धेन राजेन्द्र सुहृदां शृणु कारणम् ।
ध्रुवं विनाशो युद्धे हि क्षत्रियाणां प्रदृश्यते ॥१९॥
19. alaṁ yuddhena rājendra suhṛdāṁ śṛṇu kāraṇam ,
dhruvaṁ vināśo yuddhe hi kṣatriyāṇāṁ pradṛśyate.
19. alam yuddhena rājendra suhṛdām śṛṇu kāraṇam
dhruvam vināśaḥ yuddhe hi kṣatriyāṇām pradṛśyate
19. rājendra alam yuddhena suhṛdām kāraṇam śṛṇu
yuddhe hi kṣatriyāṇām dhruvam vināśaḥ pradṛśyate
19. O King of kings, enough of this war! Listen to the counsel (kāraṇam) of your well-wishers. Indeed, the certain destruction of Kṣatriyas is clearly visible in battle.
ज्योतींषि प्रतिकूलानि दारुणा मृगपक्षिणः ।
उत्पाता विविधा वीर दृश्यन्ते क्षत्रनाशनाः ॥२०॥
20. jyotīṁṣi pratikūlāni dāruṇā mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ ,
utpātā vividhā vīra dṛśyante kṣatranāśanāḥ.
20. jyotīṃṣi pratīkūlāni dāruṇāḥ mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ
utpātāḥ vividhāḥ vīra dṛśyante kṣatranāśanāḥ
20. vīra jyotīṃṣi pratīkūlāni mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ dāruṇāḥ
vividhāḥ kṣatranāśanāḥ utpātāḥ dṛśyante
20. O hero (vīra), the heavenly bodies (jyotīṃṣi) are unfavorable, and the animals and birds are exhibiting dreadful behavior. Various portents (utpātāḥ) that forebode the destruction of Kṣatriyas are being observed.
विशेषत इहास्माकं निमित्तानि विनाशने ।
उल्काभिर्हि प्रदीप्ताभिर्वध्यते पृतना तव ॥२१॥
21. viśeṣata ihāsmākaṁ nimittāni vināśane ,
ulkābhirhi pradīptābhirvadhyate pṛtanā tava.
21. viśeṣataḥ iha asmākam nimittāni vināśane
ulkābhiḥ hi pradīptābhiḥ vadhyate pṛtanā tava
21. iha asmākam viśeṣataḥ vināśane nimittāni hi
tava pṛtanā pradīptābhiḥ ulkābhiḥ vadhyate
21. Especially here, for us, there are signs (nimittāni) indicating destruction. Indeed, your army (pṛtanā) is being struck down by blazing meteors (ulkābhiḥ pradīptābhiḥ).
वाहनान्यप्रहृष्टानि रुदन्तीव विशां पते ।
गृध्रास्ते पर्युपासन्ते सैन्यानि च समन्ततः ॥२२॥
22. vāhanānyaprahṛṣṭāni rudantīva viśāṁ pate ,
gṛdhrāste paryupāsante sainyāni ca samantataḥ.
22. vāhanāni aprahṛṣṭāni rudanti iva viśām pate
gṛdhrāḥ te paryupāsante sainyāni ca samantataḥ
22. viśām pate vāhanāni aprahṛṣṭāni rudanti iva ca
gṛdhrāḥ te sainyāni samantataḥ paryupāsante
22. O lord of men (viśām pate), your conveyances (vāhanāni) appear dejected and as if weeping. Vultures (gṛdhrāḥ) are gathering around your armies (sainyāni) from all directions.
नगरं न यथापूर्वं तथा राजनिवेशनम् ।
शिवाश्चाशिवनिर्घोषा दीप्तां सेवन्ति वै दिशम् ॥२३॥
23. nagaraṁ na yathāpūrvaṁ tathā rājaniveśanam ,
śivāścāśivanirghoṣā dīptāṁ sevanti vai diśam.
23. nagaram na yathāpūrvam tathā rājaniveśanam
śivāḥ ca aśivanirghoṣāḥ dīptām sevanti vai diśam
23. nagaram yathāpūrvam na tathā rājaniveśanam.
aśivanirghoṣāḥ śivāḥ ca dīptām diśam vai sevanti.
23. The city is no longer as it was before, nor is the royal residence. And she-jackals, howling inauspiciously, are frequenting the illuminated direction.
कुरु वाक्यं पितुर्मातुरस्माकं च हितैषिणाम् ।
त्वय्यायत्तो महाबाहो शमो व्यायाम एव च ॥२४॥
24. kuru vākyaṁ piturmāturasmākaṁ ca hitaiṣiṇām ,
tvayyāyatto mahābāho śamo vyāyāma eva ca.
24. kuru vākyam pituḥ mātuḥ asmākam ca hitaiṣiṇām
tvayi āyattaḥ mahābāho śamaḥ vyāyāmaḥ eva ca
24. mahābāho,
(tvam) pituḥ mātuḥ asmākam ca hitaiṣiṇām vākyam kuru.
śamaḥ vyāyāmaḥ ca eva tvayi āyattaḥ.
24. Obey the words of your father, mother, and us, your well-wishers. O mighty-armed one, both peace and war depend entirely on you.
न चेत्करिष्यसि वचः सुहृदामरिकर्शन ।
तप्स्यसे वाहिनीं दृष्ट्वा पार्थबाणप्रपीडिताम् ॥२५॥
25. na cetkariṣyasi vacaḥ suhṛdāmarikarśana ,
tapsyase vāhinīṁ dṛṣṭvā pārthabāṇaprapīḍitām.
25. na cet kariṣyasi vacaḥ suhṛdām arikraśana
tapsyase vāhinīm dṛṣṭvā pārthabāṇaprapīḍitām
25. arikarśana,
cet suhṛdām vacaḥ na kariṣyasi,
(tadā tvam) pārthabāṇaprapīḍitām vāhinīm dṛṣṭvā tapsyase.
25. O subduer of enemies, if you do not heed the advice of your friends, you will suffer when you see your army afflicted by Arjuna's (Pārtha) arrows.
भीमस्य च महानादं नदतः शुष्मिणो रणे ।
श्रुत्वा स्मर्तासि मे वाक्यं गाण्डीवस्य च निस्वनम् ।
यद्येतदपसव्यं ते भविष्यति वचो मम ॥२६॥
26. bhīmasya ca mahānādaṁ nadataḥ śuṣmiṇo raṇe ,
śrutvā smartāsi me vākyaṁ gāṇḍīvasya ca nisvanam ,
yadyetadapasavyaṁ te bhaviṣyati vaco mama.
26. bhīmasya ca mahānādam nadataḥ śuṣmiṇaḥ
raṇe śrutvā smartā asi me vākyam
gāṇḍīvasya ca nisvanam yadi etat
apasavyam te bhaviṣyati vacaḥ mama
26. yadi etat mama vacaḥ te apasavyam bhaviṣyati raṇe nadataḥ śuṣmiṇaḥ bhīmasya ca mahānādam gāṇḍīvasya ca nisvanam śrutvā me vākyam smartā asi.
26. And if these words of mine prove unfavorable to you, you will remember my advice after hearing the great roar of the mighty Bhīma (Bhīmasya) roaring in battle, and the twang of the Gāṇḍīva (bow).
