वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य वानरेन्द्रस्य धीमतः ।
भीमसेनस्तदा वीरः प्रोवाचामित्रकर्शनः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etacchrutvā vacastasya vānarendrasya dhīmataḥ ,
bhīmasenastadā vīraḥ provācāmitrakarśanaḥ.
1. vaiśampāyana uvāca etat śrutvā vacaḥ tasya vānarendrasya
dhīmataḥ bhīmasenaḥ tadā vīraḥ provāca amitrakarśanaḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard these words from that intelligent chief of monkeys, the heroic Bhīmasena, the destroyer of enemies, then spoke.
को भवान्किंनिमित्तं वा वानरं वपुराश्रितः ।
ब्राह्मणानन्तरो वर्णः क्षत्रियस्त्वानुपृच्छति ॥२॥
2. ko bhavānkiṁnimittaṁ vā vānaraṁ vapurāśritaḥ ,
brāhmaṇānantaro varṇaḥ kṣatriyastvānupṛcchati.
2. kaḥ bhavān kimnimittam vā vānaram vapuḥ āśritaḥ
brāhmaṇa anantaraḥ varṇaḥ kṣatriyaḥ tvā anupṛcchati
2. Who are you, and for what purpose have you assumed the form of a monkey? A kṣatriya, the social class immediately after the brahmins, is asking you.
कौरवः सोमवंशीयः कुन्त्या गर्भेण धारितः ।
पाण्डवो वायुतनयो भीमसेन इति श्रुतः ॥३॥
3. kauravaḥ somavaṁśīyaḥ kuntyā garbheṇa dhāritaḥ ,
pāṇḍavo vāyutanayo bhīmasena iti śrutaḥ.
3. kauravaḥ somavaṃśīyaḥ kuntyā garbheṇa dhāritaḥ
pāṇḍavaḥ vāyutanayaḥ bhīmasena iti śrutaḥ
3. I am a Kaurava, belonging to the Soma dynasty, borne by Kuntī in her womb. I am a Pāṇḍava, the son of Vāyu, known as Bhīmasena.
स वाक्यं भीमसेनस्य स्मितेन प्रतिगृह्य तत् ।
हनूमान्वायुतनयो वायुपुत्रमभाषत ॥४॥
4. sa vākyaṁ bhīmasenasya smitena pratigṛhya tat ,
hanūmānvāyutanayo vāyuputramabhāṣata.
4. sa vākyam bhīmasenasya smitena pratigṛhya
tat hanūmān vāyutanayaḥ vāyuputram abhāṣata
4. That Hanūmān, the son of Vāyu, accepting those words of Bhīmasena with a smile, then spoke to the son of Vāyu (Bhīmasena).
वानरोऽहं न ते मार्गं प्रदास्यामि यथेप्सितम् ।
साधु गच्छ निवर्तस्व मा त्वं प्राप्स्यसि वैशसम् ॥५॥
5. vānaro'haṁ na te mārgaṁ pradāsyāmi yathepsitam ,
sādhu gaccha nivartasva mā tvaṁ prāpsyasi vaiśasam.
5. vānaraḥ aham na te mārgam pradāsyāmi yathā īpsitam
sādhu gaccha nivartasva mā tvam prāpsyasi vaiśasam
5. I am a monkey. I will not grant you passage as you wish. Go back, lest you encounter misfortune.
भीम उवाच ।
वैशसं वास्तु यद्वान्यन्न त्वा पृच्छामि वानर ।
प्रयच्छोत्तिष्ठ मार्गं मे मा त्वं प्राप्स्यसि वैशसम् ॥६॥
6. bhīma uvāca ,
vaiśasaṁ vāstu yadvānyanna tvā pṛcchāmi vānara ,
prayacchottiṣṭha mārgaṁ me mā tvaṁ prāpsyasi vaiśasam.
6. bhīmaḥ uvāca vaiśasam vā astu
yat vā anyat na tvā pṛcchāmi
vānara prayaccha uttiṣṭha mārgam
me mā tvam prāpsyasi vaiśasam
6. Bhīma said, "Let there be misfortune or anything else; I am not asking for your permission, O monkey. Get up and grant me passage, lest you incur misfortune."
हनूमानुवाच ।
नास्ति शक्तिर्ममोत्थातुं व्याधिना क्लेशितो ह्यहम् ।
यद्यवश्यं प्रयातव्यं लङ्घयित्वा प्रयाहि माम् ॥७॥
7. hanūmānuvāca ,
nāsti śaktirmamotthātuṁ vyādhinā kleśito hyaham ,
yadyavaśyaṁ prayātavyaṁ laṅghayitvā prayāhi mām.
7. hanūmān uvāca na asti śaktiḥ mama utthātum vyādhinā kleśitaḥ
hi aham yadi avaśyam prayātavyam laṅghayitvā prayāhi mām
7. Hanumān said, "I lack the strength (śakti) to get up, for I am troubled by sickness. If you absolutely must proceed, then step over me and continue on your way."
भीम उवाच ।
निर्गुणः परमात्मेति देहं ते व्याप्य तिष्ठति ।
तमहं ज्ञानविज्ञेयं नावमन्ये न लङ्घये ॥८॥
8. bhīma uvāca ,
nirguṇaḥ paramātmeti dehaṁ te vyāpya tiṣṭhati ,
tamahaṁ jñānavijñeyaṁ nāvamanye na laṅghaye.
8. bhīmaḥ uvāca nirguṇaḥ paramātmā iti deham te vyāpya
tiṣṭhati tam aham jñānavijñeyam na avamanye na laṅghaye
8. Bhīma said, "The supreme self (paramātman), which is devoid of qualities (nirguṇa), pervades and resides within your body. That [self], which is to be understood through spiritual knowledge (jñāna), I neither disrespect nor will I step over."
यद्यागमैर्न विन्देयं तमहं भूतभावनम् ।
क्रमेयं त्वां गिरिं चेमं हनूमानिव सागरम् ॥९॥
9. yadyāgamairna vindeyaṁ tamahaṁ bhūtabhāvanam ,
krameyaṁ tvāṁ giriṁ cemaṁ hanūmāniva sāgaram.
9. yadi āgamaiḥ na vindeyam tam aham bhūtabhāvanam
krameyam tvām girim ca imam hanūmān iva sāgaram
9. If I cannot comprehend that creator of all beings (bhūtabhāvana) through the sacred texts (āgama), then I would cross this very mountain, just as Hanūmān crossed the ocean.
हनूमानुवाच ।
क एष हनुमान्नाम सागरो येन लङ्घितः ।
पृच्छामि त्वा कुरुश्रेष्ठ कथ्यतां यदि शक्यते ॥१०॥
10. hanūmānuvāca ,
ka eṣa hanumānnāma sāgaro yena laṅghitaḥ ,
pṛcchāmi tvā kuruśreṣṭha kathyatāṁ yadi śakyate.
10. hanūmat uvāca kaḥ eṣaḥ hanūmān nāma sāgaraḥ yena
laṅghitaḥ pṛcchāmi tvā kurūśreṣṭha kathyatām yadi śakyate
10. Hanūmān said, 'Who is this person named Hanūmān, by whom the ocean was crossed? O best among the Kurus (kurūśreṣṭha), I ask you, please tell me if you are able to.'
भीम उवाच ।
भ्राता मम गुणश्लाघ्यो बुद्धिसत्त्वबलान्वितः ।
रामायणेऽतिविख्यातः शूरो वानरपुंगवः ॥११॥
11. bhīma uvāca ,
bhrātā mama guṇaślāghyo buddhisattvabalānvitaḥ ,
rāmāyaṇe'tivikhyātaḥ śūro vānarapuṁgavaḥ.
11. bhīmaḥ uvāca bhrātā mama guṇaślāghyaḥ buddhisattvabalānvitaḥ
rāmāyaṇe ativikhyātaḥ śūraḥ vānarapuṅgavaḥ
11. Bhīma said, 'My brother is one whose good qualities (guṇa) are praised, endowed with intelligence, spiritual essence (sattva), and strength. He is exceedingly renowned in the Rāmāyaṇa, a valiant hero, and the chief among monkeys (vānara-puṅgava).'
रामपत्नीकृते येन शतयोजनमायतः ।
सागरः प्लवगेन्द्रेण क्रमेणैकेन लङ्घितः ॥१२॥
12. rāmapatnīkṛte yena śatayojanamāyataḥ ,
sāgaraḥ plavagendreṇa krameṇaikena laṅghitaḥ.
12. rāmapatnīkṛte yena śatayojanam āyataḥ
sāgaraḥ plavagendrēṇa krameṇa ekena laṅghitaḥ
12. For the sake of Rāma's wife (rāmapatnī), that ocean, which stretched for a hundred yojanas, was crossed by him, the chief of monkeys (plavagendra), in a single stride.
स मे भ्राता महावीर्यस्तुल्योऽहं तस्य तेजसा ।
बले पराक्रमे युद्धे शक्तोऽहं तव निग्रहे ॥१३॥
13. sa me bhrātā mahāvīryastulyo'haṁ tasya tejasā ,
bale parākrame yuddhe śakto'haṁ tava nigrahe.
13. sa me bhrātā mahāvīryaḥ tulyaḥ aham tasya tejasā
bale parākrame yuddhe śaktaḥ aham tava nigrahe
13. He is my immensely powerful brother, and I am equal to him in energy (tejas). I am capable of subduing you in strength, valor, and combat.
उत्तिष्ठ देहि मे मार्गं पश्य वा मेऽद्य पौरुषम् ।
मच्छासनमकुर्वाणं मा त्वा नेष्ये यमक्षयम् ॥१४॥
14. uttiṣṭha dehi me mārgaṁ paśya vā me'dya pauruṣam ,
macchāsanamakurvāṇaṁ mā tvā neṣye yamakṣayam.
14. uttiṣṭha dehi me mārgam paśya vā me adya pauruṣam
mat śāsanam akurvāṇam mā tvā neṣye yamakṣayam
14. Stand up and give me passage, or witness my prowess (pauruṣa) today. If you do not obey my command, I will certainly lead you to the abode of Yama.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
विज्ञाय तं बलोन्मत्तं बाहुवीर्येण गर्वितम् ।
हृदयेनावहस्यैनं हनूमान्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
vijñāya taṁ balonmattaṁ bāhuvīryeṇa garvitam ,
hṛdayenāvahasyainaṁ hanūmānvākyamabravīt.
15. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca vijñāya tam balonmattam bāhuvīryeṇa
garvitam hṛdayena avahasya enam hanūmān vākyam abravīt
15. Vaiśampāyana said: Hanumān, perceiving him to be intoxicated with strength and arrogant due to his arm-power (vīrya), laughed inwardly (hṛdaya) and spoke these words to him.
प्रसीद नास्ति मे शक्तिरुत्थातुं जरयानघ ।
ममानुकम्पया त्वेतत्पुच्छमुत्सार्य गम्यताम् ॥१६॥
16. prasīda nāsti me śaktirutthātuṁ jarayānagha ,
mamānukampayā tvetatpucchamutsārya gamyatām.
16. prasīda na asti me śaktiḥ utthātum jarayā anagha
mama anukampayā tu etat puccham utsārya gamyatām
16. O sinless one (anagha), be gracious! I have no strength (śakti) to rise due to old age. Therefore, out of compassion for me, please move this tail aside and proceed.
सावज्ञमथ वामेन स्मयञ्जग्राह पाणिना ।
न चाशकच्चालयितुं भीमः पुच्छं महाकपेः ॥१७॥
17. sāvajñamatha vāmena smayañjagrāha pāṇinā ,
na cāśakaccālayituṁ bhīmaḥ pucchaṁ mahākapeḥ.
17. sāvajñam atha vāmena smayan jagrāha pāṇinā na
ca aśakat cālayitum bhīmaḥ puccham mahākapiḥ
17. Smiling disdainfully, Bhīma then grasped [the tail] with his left hand, but he was unable to move the great monkey's tail.
उच्चिक्षेप पुनर्दोर्भ्यामिन्द्रायुधमिवोच्छ्रितम् ।
नोद्धर्तुमशकद्भीमो दोर्भ्यामपि महाबलः ॥१८॥
18. uccikṣepa punardorbhyāmindrāyudhamivocchritam ,
noddhartumaśakadbhīmo dorbhyāmapi mahābalaḥ.
18. uccikṣepa punar dorbhyām indrāyudham iva ucchritam
na uddhartum aśakat bhīmaḥ dorbhyām api mahābalaḥ
18. Again, Bhīma, with his two arms, raised [the tail] as if it were a high-arching rainbow (indrāyudha). Yet, even the immensely powerful (mahābala) Bhīma was unable to lift it with both his arms.
उत्क्षिप्तभ्रूर्विवृत्ताक्षः संहतभ्रुकुटीमुखः ।
स्विन्नगात्रोऽभवद्भीमो न चोद्धर्तुं शशाक ह ॥१९॥
19. utkṣiptabhrūrvivṛttākṣaḥ saṁhatabhrukuṭīmukhaḥ ,
svinnagātro'bhavadbhīmo na coddhartuṁ śaśāka ha.
19. utkṣiptabhrūḥ vivṛttākṣaḥ saṃhatabhrukuṭīmukhaḥ
svinnagātraḥ abhavat bhīmaḥ na ca uddhartum śaśāka ha
19. With eyebrows raised, eyes wide open, and a face furrowed by a frown, Bhīma's body became drenched in sweat; yet, he was indeed unable to lift [it].
यत्नवानपि तु श्रीमाँल्लाङ्गूलोद्धरणोद्धुतः ।
कपेः पार्श्वगतो भीमस्तस्थौ व्रीडादधोमुखः ॥२०॥
20. yatnavānapi tu śrīmāँllāṅgūloddharaṇoddhutaḥ ,
kapeḥ pārśvagato bhīmastasthau vrīḍādadhomukhaḥ.
20. yatnavān api tu śrīmān lāṅgūloddharaṇoddhutaḥ
kapiḥ pārśvagataḥ bhīmaḥ tasthau vrīḍāt adhomukhaḥ
20. Although making a great effort and stirred up by the attempt to lift the tail, the glorious (śrīmān) Bhīma stood beside the monkey, his face downcast from shame.
प्रणिपत्य च कौन्तेयः प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
प्रसीद कपिशार्दूल दुरुक्तं क्षम्यतां मम ॥२१॥
21. praṇipatya ca kaunteyaḥ prāñjalirvākyamabravīt ,
prasīda kapiśārdūla duruktaṁ kṣamyatāṁ mama.
21. praṇipatya ca kaunteyaḥ prāñjaliḥ vākyam abravīt
prasīda kapiśārdūla duruktam kṣamyatām mama
21. And the son of Kunti, having prostrated and with folded hands, spoke these words: 'O tiger among monkeys, please be gracious, and let my harsh words be forgiven.'
सिद्धो वा यदि वा देवो गन्धर्वो वाथ गुह्यकः ।
पृष्टः सन्कामया ब्रूहि कस्त्वं वानररूपधृक् ॥२२॥
22. siddho vā yadi vā devo gandharvo vātha guhyakaḥ ,
pṛṣṭaḥ sankāmayā brūhi kastvaṁ vānararūpadhṛk.
22. siddhaḥ vā yadi vā devaḥ gandharvaḥ vā atha guhyakaḥ
pṛṣṭaḥ san kāmayā brūhi kaḥ tvam vānararūpadhṛk
22. Whether you are a perfected being, or a god, or a celestial musician, or a Guhyaka, tell me willingly, since I have asked you, who are you, appearing in the form of a monkey?
हनूमानुवाच ।
यत्ते मम परिज्ञाने कौतूहलमरिंदम ।
तत्सर्वमखिलेन त्वं शृणु पाण्डवनन्दन ॥२३॥
23. hanūmānuvāca ,
yatte mama parijñāne kautūhalamariṁdama ,
tatsarvamakhilena tvaṁ śṛṇu pāṇḍavanandana.
23. hanumān uvāca yat te mama parijñāne kautūhalam
ariṃdama tat sarvam akhilena tvam śṛṇu pāṇḍavanandana
23. Hanumān said: 'O suppressor of enemies, O delight of Pandu, whatever curiosity you have concerning the knowledge of me, hear all of it completely from me.'
अहं केसरिणः क्षेत्रे वायुना जगदायुषा ।
जातः कमलपत्राक्ष हनूमान्नाम वानरः ॥२४॥
24. ahaṁ kesariṇaḥ kṣetre vāyunā jagadāyuṣā ,
jātaḥ kamalapatrākṣa hanūmānnāma vānaraḥ.
24. aham kesariṇaḥ kṣetre vāyunā jagadāyuṣā
jātaḥ kamalapattrākṣa hanumān nāma vānaraḥ
24. O lotus-petal-eyed one, I am a monkey named Hanumān, born to Kesari's wife by Vayu, the life of the world.
सूर्यपुत्रं च सुग्रीवं शक्रपुत्रं च वालिनम् ।
सर्ववानरराजानौ सर्ववानरयूथपाः ॥२५॥
25. sūryaputraṁ ca sugrīvaṁ śakraputraṁ ca vālinam ,
sarvavānararājānau sarvavānarayūthapāḥ.
25. sūryaputraṃ ca sugrīvaṃ śakraputraṃ ca
vālinam sarvavānararājānau sarvavānarayūthapāḥ
25. Sugrīva, the son of Sūrya, and Vālin, the son of Śakra (Indra), both kings of all monkeys, along with all the monkey chiefs.
उपतस्थुर्महावीर्या मम चामित्रकर्शन ।
सुग्रीवेणाभवत्प्रीतिरनिलस्याग्निना यथा ॥२६॥
26. upatasthurmahāvīryā mama cāmitrakarśana ,
sugrīveṇābhavatprītiranilasyāgninā yathā.
26. upatasthuḥ mahāvīryāḥ mama ca amitrakarśana
sugrīveṇa abhavat prītiḥ anilasya agninā yathā
26. O destroyer of foes, the immensely powerful ones approached me. A friendship developed with Sugrīva, just as there is between wind and fire.
निकृतः स ततो भ्रात्रा कस्मिंश्चित्कारणान्तरे ।
ऋश्यमूके मया सार्धं सुग्रीवो न्यवसच्चिरम् ॥२७॥
27. nikṛtaḥ sa tato bhrātrā kasmiṁścitkāraṇāntare ,
ṛśyamūke mayā sārdhaṁ sugrīvo nyavasacciram.
27. nikṛtaḥ saḥ tataḥ bhrātrā kasmin cit kāraṇāntare
ṛśyamūke mayā sārdham sugrīvaḥ nyavasat ciram
27. Then, having been wronged by his brother for some other reason, Sugrīva resided on Mount Ṛṣyamūka with me for a long time.
अथ दाशरथिर्वीरो रामो नाम महाबलः ।
विष्णुर्मानुषरूपेण चचार वसुधामिमाम् ॥२८॥
28. atha dāśarathirvīro rāmo nāma mahābalaḥ ,
viṣṇurmānuṣarūpeṇa cacāra vasudhāmimām.
28. atha dāśarathiḥ vīraḥ rāmaḥ nāma mahābalaḥ
viṣṇuḥ mānuṣarūpeṇa cacāra vasudhām imām
28. Then, the heroic son of Daśaratha, named Rāma, of great strength, Viṣṇu himself in human form, traversed this earth.
स पितुः प्रियमन्विच्छन्सहभार्यः सहानुजः ।
सधनुर्धन्विनां श्रेष्ठो दण्डकारण्यमाश्रितः ॥२९॥
29. sa pituḥ priyamanvicchansahabhāryaḥ sahānujaḥ ,
sadhanurdhanvināṁ śreṣṭho daṇḍakāraṇyamāśritaḥ.
29. saḥ pituḥ priyam anvicchan saha-bhāryaḥ saha-anujaḥ
sa-dhanuḥ dhanvinām śreṣṭhaḥ daṇḍakāraṇyam āśritaḥ
29. Seeking to fulfill his father's command, he, accompanied by his wife and younger brother, and being the best among archers with his bow, resided in the Dandaka forest.
तस्य भार्या जनस्थानाद्रावणेन हृता बलात् ।
वञ्चयित्वा महाबुद्धिं मृगरूपेण राघवम् ॥३०॥
30. tasya bhāryā janasthānādrāvaṇena hṛtā balāt ,
vañcayitvā mahābuddhiṁ mṛgarūpeṇa rāghavam.
30. tasya bhāryā janasthānāt rāvaṇena hṛtā balāt
vañcayitvā mahā-buddhim mṛga-rūpeṇa rāghavam
30. His wife was forcefully abducted by Ravana from Janasthana, after he (Ravana) had deceived the highly intelligent Rama (rāghava) in the form of a deer.
हृतदारः सह भ्रात्रा पत्नीं मार्गन्स राघवः ।
दृष्टवाञ्शैलशिखरे सुग्रीवं वानरर्षभम् ॥३१॥
31. hṛtadāraḥ saha bhrātrā patnīṁ mārgansa rāghavaḥ ,
dṛṣṭavāñśailaśikhare sugrīvaṁ vānararṣabham.
31. hṛta-dāraḥ saha bhrātrā patnīm mārgan saḥ rāghavaḥ
dṛṣṭavān śaila-śikhare sugrīvam vānara-ṛṣabham
31. That Rama (rāghava), whose wife had been abducted, searched for his wife along with his brother, and on a mountain peak, he saw Sugriva, the best among monkeys.
तेन तस्याभवत्सख्यं राघवस्य महात्मनः ।
स हत्वा वालिनं राज्ये सुग्रीवं प्रत्यपादयत् ।
स हरीन्प्रेषयामास सीतायाः परिमार्गणे ॥३२॥
32. tena tasyābhavatsakhyaṁ rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
sa hatvā vālinaṁ rājye sugrīvaṁ pratyapādayat ,
sa harīnpreṣayāmāsa sītāyāḥ parimārgaṇe.
32. tena tasya abhavat sakhyam rāghavasya
mahātmanaḥ saḥ hatvā vālinam
rājye sugrīvam pratyapādayat saḥ
harīn preṣayām-āsa sītāyāḥ parimārgaṇe
32. Friendship developed between him (Sugriva) and the great-souled (mahātman) Rama (rāghava). Having killed Vali, Rama then restored Sugriva to the kingdom. He (Sugriva) then dispatched monkeys for the search of Sita.
ततो वानरकोटीभिर्यां वयं प्रस्थिता दिशम् ।
तत्र प्रवृत्तिः सीताया गृध्रेण प्रतिपादिता ॥३३॥
33. tato vānarakoṭībhiryāṁ vayaṁ prasthitā diśam ,
tatra pravṛttiḥ sītāyā gṛdhreṇa pratipāditā.
33. tatas vānarakotībhiḥ yām vayam prasthitāḥ diśam
tatra pravṛttiḥ sītāyāḥ gṛdhreṇa pratipāditā
33. Then, in the direction where we had set out with millions of monkeys, the vulture there revealed the information about Sītā.
ततोऽहं कार्यसिद्ध्यर्थं रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
शतयोजनविस्तीर्णमर्णवं सहसाप्लुतः ॥३४॥
34. tato'haṁ kāryasiddhyarthaṁ rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
śatayojanavistīrṇamarṇavaṁ sahasāplutaḥ.
34. tatas aham kāryasiddhyartham rāmasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ
śatayojanavistīrṇam arṇavam sahasā āplutaḥ
34. Then I, for the accomplishment of the task and for Rāma, who is of unwearied actions (karma), suddenly leaped across the ocean, which was one hundred yojanas wide.
दृष्टा सा च मया देवी रावणस्य निवेशने ।
प्रत्यागतश्चापि पुनर्नाम तत्र प्रकाश्य वै ॥३५॥
35. dṛṣṭā sā ca mayā devī rāvaṇasya niveśane ,
pratyāgataścāpi punarnāma tatra prakāśya vai.
35. dṛṣṭā sā ca mayā devī rāvaṇasya niveśane
pratyāgataḥ ca api punar nāma tatra prakāśya vai
35. And she, the divine lady Sītā, was seen by me in Rāvaṇa's dwelling. And after revealing my name there, I also returned.
ततो रामेण वीरेण हत्वा तान्सर्वराक्षसान् ।
पुनः प्रत्याहृता भार्या नष्टा वेदश्रुतिर्यथा ॥३६॥
36. tato rāmeṇa vīreṇa hatvā tānsarvarākṣasān ,
punaḥ pratyāhṛtā bhāryā naṣṭā vedaśrutiryathā.
36. tatas rāmeṇa vīreṇa hatvā tān sarvarākṣasān
punaḥ pratyāhṛtā bhāryā naṣṭā vedaśrutiḥ yathā
36. Then, by the heroic Rāma, having killed all those demons, his wife was recovered, just as lost Vedic knowledge (śruti) is brought back.
ततः प्रतिष्ठिते रामे वीरोऽयं याचितो मया ।
यावद्रामकथा वीर भवेल्लोकेषु शत्रुहन् ।
तावज्जीवेयमित्येवं तथास्त्विति च सोऽब्रवीत् ॥३७॥
37. tataḥ pratiṣṭhite rāme vīro'yaṁ yācito mayā ,
yāvadrāmakathā vīra bhavellokeṣu śatruhan ,
tāvajjīveyamityevaṁ tathāstviti ca so'bravīt.
37. tataḥ pratiṣṭhite rāme vīraḥ ayam
yācitaḥ mayā yāvat rāmakathā vīra
bhavet lokeṣu śatruhan tāvat jīveyam
iti evam tathā astu iti ca saḥ abravīt
37. After Rama (Rāma) was established on his throne, I made this request to that hero: "O hero, O destroyer of enemies, as long as the narrative of Rama (Rāmakathā) exists in the worlds, may I live for that duration." And he replied, "So be it."
दश वर्षसहस्राणि दश वर्षशतानि च ।
राज्यं कारितवान्रामस्ततस्तु त्रिदिवं गतः ॥३८॥
38. daśa varṣasahasrāṇi daśa varṣaśatāni ca ,
rājyaṁ kāritavānrāmastatastu tridivaṁ gataḥ.
38. daśa varṣasahasrāṇi daśa varṣaśatāni ca rājyam
kāritavān rāmaḥ tataḥ tu tridivam gataḥ
38. Rama (Rāma) ruled for ten thousand years and an additional one thousand years, and then he departed for heaven (Tridiva).
तदिहाप्सरसस्तात गन्धर्वाश्च सदानघ ।
तस्य वीरस्य चरितं गायन्त्यो रमयन्ति माम् ॥३९॥
39. tadihāpsarasastāta gandharvāśca sadānagha ,
tasya vīrasya caritaṁ gāyantyo ramayanti mām.
39. tat iha apsarasaḥ tāta gandharvāḥ ca sadā anagha
tasya vīrasya caritam gāyantyaḥ ramayanti mām
39. Therefore, O sinless (anagha) father, here the Apsaras and Gandharvas always sing the deeds of that hero (vīra), delighting me.
अयं च मार्गो मर्त्यानामगम्यः कुरुनन्दन ।
ततोऽहं रुद्धवान्मार्गं तवेमं देवसेवितम् ।
धर्षयेद्वा शपेद्वापि मा कश्चिदिति भारत ॥४०॥
40. ayaṁ ca mārgo martyānāmagamyaḥ kurunandana ,
tato'haṁ ruddhavānmārgaṁ tavemaṁ devasevitam ,
dharṣayedvā śapedvāpi mā kaściditi bhārata.
40. ayam ca mārgaḥ martyānām agamyaḥ
kurunandana tataḥ aham ruddhavān mārgam
tava imam devasevitam dharṣayet
vā śapet vā api mā kaścit iti bhārata
40. And this path is inaccessible to mortals, O Kuru's son (Kuru-nandana). Therefore, I blocked this path of yours, which is frequented by the gods, lest anyone disrespect or curse (it), O Bharata (Bhārata).
दिव्यो देवपथो ह्येष नात्र गच्छन्ति मानुषाः ।
यदर्थमागतश्चासि तत्सरोऽभ्यर्ण एव हि ॥४१॥
41. divyo devapatho hyeṣa nātra gacchanti mānuṣāḥ ,
yadarthamāgataścāsi tatsaro'bhyarṇa eva hi.
41. divyaḥ devapathaḥ hi eṣaḥ na atra gacchanti mānuṣāḥ
yat artham āgataḥ ca asi tat saraḥ abhyarṇaḥ eva hi
41. This is indeed a divine path, and humans do not tread here. The lake for which you have come is certainly very near.
