ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
कार्तवीर्यस्य संवादं समुद्रस्य च भामिनि ॥१॥
1. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
kārtavīryasya saṁvādaṁ samudrasya ca bhāmini.

1. The Brahmin said: 'In this context, they also recount this ancient story (itihāsa): the conversation between Kārtavīrya and the ocean, O beautiful lady!'
कार्तवीर्यार्जुनो नाम राजा बाहुसहस्रवान् ।
येन सागरपर्यन्ता धनुषा निर्जिता मही ॥२॥
2. kārtavīryārjuno nāma rājā bāhusahasravān ,
yena sāgaraparyantā dhanuṣā nirjitā mahī.

2. There was a king named Kārtavīryārjuna, who possessed a thousand arms. He conquered the entire earth, up to the ocean, with his bow.
स कदाचित्समुद्रान्ते विचरन्बलदर्पितः ।
अवाकिरच्छरशतैः समुद्रमिति नः श्रुतम् ॥३॥
3. sa kadācitsamudrānte vicaranbaladarpitaḥ ,
avākiraccharaśataiḥ samudramiti naḥ śrutam.
3. saḥ kadācit samudrānte vicaran baladarṣitaḥ
avākirat śaraśataiḥ samudram iti naḥ śrutam

3. Once, while he (Kārtavīryārjuna) was wandering by the ocean, proud of his immense strength, he showered the ocean with hundreds of arrows. This is how it has been narrated to us.
तं समुद्रो नमस्कृत्य कृताञ्जलिरुवाच ह ।
मा मुञ्च वीर नाराचान्ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥४॥
4. taṁ samudro namaskṛtya kṛtāñjaliruvāca ha ,
mā muñca vīra nārācānbrūhi kiṁ karavāṇi te.
4. tam samudraḥ namaskṛtya kṛtāñjaliḥ uvāca ha
mā muñca vīra nārācān brūhi kim karavāṇi te
4. vīra samudraḥ tam namaskṛtya kṛtāñjaliḥ ha uvāca

4. The ocean, having bowed to him with folded hands, indeed said: "O hero, do not release your arrows! Tell me, what should I do for you?"
मदाश्रयाणि भूतानि त्वद्विसृष्टैर्महेषुभिः ।
वध्यन्ते राजशार्दूल तेभ्यो देह्यभयं विभो ॥५॥
5. madāśrayāṇi bhūtāni tvadvisṛṣṭairmaheṣubhiḥ ,
vadhyante rājaśārdūla tebhyo dehyabhayaṁ vibho.
5. mat-āśrayāṇi bhūtāni tvat-visṛṣṭaiḥ mahā-iṣubhiḥ
vadhyante rājaśārdūla tebhyaḥ dehi abhayam vibho
5. rājaśārdūla vibho tvat-visṛṣṭaiḥ mahā-iṣubhiḥ
mat-āśrayāṇi bhūtāni vadhyante tebhyaḥ abhayam dehi
5. “O tiger among kings, O powerful one, the beings relying on me are being killed by the great arrows released by you. Grant them safety!”,
अर्जुन उवाच ।
मत्समो यदि संग्रामे शरासनधरः क्वचित् ।
विद्यते तं ममाचक्ष्व यः समासीत मां मृधे ॥६॥
6. arjuna uvāca ,
matsamo yadi saṁgrāme śarāsanadharaḥ kvacit ,
vidyate taṁ mamācakṣva yaḥ samāsīta māṁ mṛdhe.
6. arjunaḥ uvāca mat-samaḥ yadi saṅgrāme śarāsanadharaḥ
kvacit vidyate tam mama ācakṣva yaḥ samāsīta mām mṛdhe
6. arjunaḥ uvāca yadi kvacit saṅgrāme mat-samaḥ śarāsanadharaḥ
vidyate yaḥ mām mṛdhe samāsīta tam mama ācakṣva
6. Arjuna said: "If anywhere in battle there exists someone equal to me, holding a bow, who would confront me in combat, then tell me about him."
समुद्र उवाच ।
महर्षिर्जमदग्निस्ते यदि राजन्परिश्रुतः ।
तस्य पुत्रस्तवातिथ्यं यथावत्कर्तुमर्हति ॥७॥
7. samudra uvāca ,
maharṣirjamadagniste yadi rājanpariśrutaḥ ,
tasya putrastavātithyaṁ yathāvatkartumarhati.
7. samudraḥ uvāca maharṣiḥ jamadagniḥ te yadi rājan pariśrutaḥ
tasya putraḥ tava ātithyam yathāvat kartum arhati
7. samudraḥ uvāca rājan yadi maharṣiḥ jamadagniḥ te pariśrutaḥ
tasya putraḥ tava ātithyam yathāvat kartum arhati
7. The ocean said: "O king, if the great sage Jamadagni is well-known to you, then his son is able to properly offer hospitality to you."
ततः स राजा प्रययौ क्रोधेन महता वृतः ।
स तमाश्रममागम्य राममेवान्वपद्यत ॥८॥
8. tataḥ sa rājā prayayau krodhena mahatā vṛtaḥ ,
sa tamāśramamāgamya rāmamevānvapadyata.
8. tataḥ sa rājā prayayau krodhena mahatā vṛtaḥ
sa tam āśramam āgamya rāmam eva anvapadyata
8. tataḥ mahatā krodhena vṛtaḥ sa rājā prayayau

8. Then that king, overcome by great anger, set out. Upon reaching that hermitage, he indeed found Rama.
स रामप्रतिकूलानि चकार सह बन्धुभिः ।
आयासं जनयामास रामस्य च महात्मनः ॥९॥
9. sa rāmapratikūlāni cakāra saha bandhubhiḥ ,
āyāsaṁ janayāmāsa rāmasya ca mahātmanaḥ.
9. sa rāmapratikūlāni cakāra saha bandhubhiḥ
āyāsam janayāmāsa rāmasya ca mahātmanaḥ
9. sa bandhubhiḥ saha rāmapratikūlāni cakāra
ca mahātmanaḥ rāmasya āyāsam janayāmāsa
9. He, along with his kinsmen, committed hostile acts against Rama and caused distress to the great-souled (mahātman) Rama.
ततस्तेजः प्रजज्वाल रामस्यामिततेजसः ।
प्रदहद्रिपुसैन्यानि तदा कमललोचने ॥१०॥
10. tatastejaḥ prajajvāla rāmasyāmitatejasaḥ ,
pradahadripusainyāni tadā kamalalocane.
10. tataḥ tejaḥ prajajvāla rāmasya amitatejasaḥ
pradahat ripusainyāni tadā kamalalocane
10. tataḥ kamalalocane amitatejasaḥ rāmasya
tejaḥ prajajvāla tadā ripusainyāni pradahat
10. Then, O lotus-eyed one (kamalalocana), the immeasurable (amitatejas) radiance of Rama blazed forth, consuming the enemy armies at that time.
ततः परशुमादाय स तं बाहुसहस्रिणम् ।
चिच्छेद सहसा रामो बाहुशाखमिव द्रुमम् ॥११॥
11. tataḥ paraśumādāya sa taṁ bāhusahasriṇam ,
ciccheda sahasā rāmo bāhuśākhamiva drumam.
11. tataḥ paraśum ādāya sa tam bāhusahasriṇam
ciccheda sahasā rāmaḥ bāhuśākham iva drumam
11. tataḥ sa rāmaḥ paraśum ādāya sahasā tam
bāhusahasriṇam bāhuśākham drumam iva ciccheda
11. Then Rama, taking up his axe, suddenly severed that thousand-armed one (bāhusahasrin), just as one would cut down a tree with many branches.
तं हतं पतितं दृष्ट्वा समेताः सर्वबान्धवाः ।
असीनादाय शक्तीश्च भार्गवं पर्यवारयन् ॥१२॥
12. taṁ hataṁ patitaṁ dṛṣṭvā sametāḥ sarvabāndhavāḥ ,
asīnādāya śaktīśca bhārgavaṁ paryavārayan.
12. tam hatam patitam dṛṣṭvā sametāḥ sarvabāndhavāḥ
asīn ādāya śaktīḥ ca bhārgavam paryavārayan
12. tam hatam patitam dṛṣṭvā sarvabāndhavāḥ sametāḥ
asīn śaktīḥ ca ādāya bhārgavam paryavārayan
12. Having seen him slain and fallen, all his relatives assembled, taking up their swords and spears, and surrounded Bhargava.
रामोऽपि धनुरादाय रथमारुह्य सत्वरः ।
विसृजञ्शरवर्षाणि व्यधमत्पार्थिवं बलम् ॥१३॥
13. rāmo'pi dhanurādāya rathamāruhya satvaraḥ ,
visṛjañśaravarṣāṇi vyadhamatpārthivaṁ balam.
13. rāmaḥ api dhanuḥ ādāya ratham āruhya satvaraḥ
visṛjan śaravarṣāṇi vyadhamat pārthivam balam
13. rāmaḥ api satvaraḥ dhanuḥ ādāya ratham āruhya
śaravarṣāṇi visṛjan pārthivam balam vyadhamat
13. Rama also, swiftly taking his bow and mounting his chariot, discharged showers of arrows and destroyed the royal army.
ततस्तु क्षत्रियाः केचिज्जमदग्निं निहत्य च ।
विविशुर्गिरिदुर्गाणि मृगाः सिंहार्दिता इव ॥१४॥
14. tatastu kṣatriyāḥ kecijjamadagniṁ nihatya ca ,
viviśurgiridurgāṇi mṛgāḥ siṁhārditā iva.
14. tataḥ tu kṣatriyāḥ kecit jamadagnim nihatya
ca viviśuḥ giridurgāṇi mṛgāḥ siṃhārditāḥ iva
14. tataḥ tu kecit kṣatriyāḥ jamadagnim nihatya
ca siṃhārditāḥ mṛgāḥ iva giridurgāṇi viviśuḥ
14. Then some kshatriyas, having killed Jamadagni, entered mountain strongholds, just like deer harassed by lions.
तेषां स्वविहितं कर्म तद्भयान्नानुतिष्ठताम् ।
प्रजा वृषलतां प्राप्ता ब्राह्मणानामदर्शनात् ॥१५॥
15. teṣāṁ svavihitaṁ karma tadbhayānnānutiṣṭhatām ,
prajā vṛṣalatāṁ prāptā brāhmaṇānāmadarśanāt.
15. teṣām svavihitam karma tat bhayāt na anutiṣṭhatām
prajā vṛṣalatām prāptā brāhmaṇānām adarśanāt
15. tat bhayāt svavihitam karma na anutiṣṭhatām teṣām
brāhmaṇānām adarśanāt prajā vṛṣalatām prāptā
15. From that fear, as they did not perform their prescribed actions (karma), and due to the absence of brahmins, the subjects (praja) attained a degraded state (vṛṣalatā).
त एते द्रमिडाः काशाः पुण्ड्राश्च शबरैः सह ।
वृषलत्वं परिगता व्युत्थानात्क्षत्रधर्मतः ॥१६॥
16. ta ete dramiḍāḥ kāśāḥ puṇḍrāśca śabaraiḥ saha ,
vṛṣalatvaṁ parigatā vyutthānātkṣatradharmataḥ.
16. taḥ ete dramiḍāḥ kāśāḥ puṇḍrāḥ ca śabaraiḥ saha
vṛṣalatvam parigatāḥ vyutthānāt kṣatradharmataḥ
16. te ete dramiḍāḥ kāśāḥ puṇḍrāḥ ca śabaraiḥ saha
kṣatradharmataḥ vyutthānāt vṛṣalatvam parigatāḥ
16. Those Draviḍas, Kāśas, and Puṇḍras, along with the Śabaras, fell to the status of outcasts due to their deviation from the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a kṣatriya.
ततस्तु हतवीरासु क्षत्रियासु पुनः पुनः ।
द्विजैरुत्पादितं क्षत्रं जामदग्न्यो न्यकृन्तत ॥१७॥
17. tatastu hatavīrāsu kṣatriyāsu punaḥ punaḥ ,
dvijairutpāditaṁ kṣatraṁ jāmadagnyo nyakṛntata.
17. tataḥ tu hatavīrāsu kṣatriyāsu punaḥ punaḥ
dvijaiḥ utpāditam kṣatram jāmadagnyaḥ nyakṛntata
17. tataḥ tu hatavīrāsu kṣatriyāsu punaḥ punaḥ
jāmadagnyaḥ dvijaiḥ utpāditam kṣatram nyakṛntata
17. Then, when the kṣatriya women had repeatedly lost their warriors, Jamadagni's son (Paraśurāma) destroyed the kṣatriya class that had been regenerated by the twice-born.
एकविंशतिमेधान्ते रामं वागशरीरिणी ।
दिव्या प्रोवाच मधुरा सर्वलोकपरिश्रुता ॥१८॥
18. ekaviṁśatimedhānte rāmaṁ vāgaśarīriṇī ,
divyā provāca madhurā sarvalokapariśrutā.
18. ekaviṃśatimedha ante rāmam vāk aśarīriṇī
divyā provāca madhurā sarvalokapariśrutā
18. ekaviṃśatimedha ante divyā madhurā
sarvalokapariśrutā aśarīriṇī vāk rāmam provāca
18. At the conclusion of twenty-one Vedic rituals (yajña), a divine, sweet, bodiless voice, known throughout all worlds, spoke to Rāma.
राम राम निवर्तस्व कं गुणं तात पश्यसि ।
क्षत्रबन्धूनिमान्प्राणैर्विप्रयोज्य पुनः पुनः ॥१९॥
19. rāma rāma nivartasva kaṁ guṇaṁ tāta paśyasi ,
kṣatrabandhūnimānprāṇairviprayojya punaḥ punaḥ.
19. rāma rāma nivartasva kam guṇam tāta paśyasi
kṣatrabandhūn imān prāṇaiḥ viprayojya punaḥ punaḥ
19. rāma rāma nivartasva tāta kam guṇam paśyasi imān
kṣatrabandhūn punaḥ punaḥ prāṇaiḥ viprayojya
19. O Rāma, O Rāma, turn back! My dear one, what merit (guṇa) do you see in repeatedly depriving these kṣatriya-kinsmen of their lives?
तथैव तं महात्मानमृचीकप्रमुखास्तदा ।
पितामहा महाभाग निवर्तस्वेत्यथाब्रुवन् ॥२०॥
20. tathaiva taṁ mahātmānamṛcīkapramukhāstadā ,
pitāmahā mahābhāga nivartasvetyathābruvan.
20. tathaiva tam mahātmānam ṛcīkapramukhāḥ tadā
pitāmahāḥ mahābhāga nivartasva iti atha abruvan
20. In the same manner, then, the venerable ancestors, headed by Ṛcīka, spoke to that great-souled person, saying, 'O greatly fortunate one, turn back!'
पितुर्वधममृष्यंस्तु रामः प्रोवाच तानृषीन् ।
नार्हन्तीह भवन्तो मां निवारयितुमित्युत ॥२१॥
21. piturvadhamamṛṣyaṁstu rāmaḥ provāca tānṛṣīn ,
nārhantīha bhavanto māṁ nivārayitumityuta.
21. pituḥ vadham amṛṣyan tu rāmaḥ provāca tān ṛṣīn
na arhanti iha bhavantaḥ mām nivārayitum iti uta
21. But Rāma, unable to tolerate his father's murder, replied to those sages: 'Indeed, you, venerable ones, are not capable of restraining me in this matter.'
पितर ऊचुः ।
नार्हसे क्षत्रबन्धूंस्त्वं निहन्तुं जयतां वर ।
न हि युक्तं त्वया हन्तुं ब्राह्मणेन सता नृपान् ॥२२॥
22. pitara ūcuḥ ,
nārhase kṣatrabandhūṁstvaṁ nihantuṁ jayatāṁ vara ,
na hi yuktaṁ tvayā hantuṁ brāhmaṇena satā nṛpān.
22. pitaraḥ ūcuḥ na arhase kṣatrabandhūn tvam nihantum jayatām
vara na hi yuktam tvayā hantum brāhmaṇena satā nṛpān
22. The ancestors said: 'O best among victors, you should not kill these so-called kṣatriyas. For indeed, it is not appropriate for you, a brahmin (brāhmaṇa), to slay kings.'
