वैशंपायन उवाच ।
कथयन्नेव तु तदा वासुदेवः प्रतापवान् ।
महाभारतयुद्धं तत्कथान्ते पितुरग्रतः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,

1. Vaiśampāyana said: 'Then, the powerful (Vāsudeva) Krishna, while narrating the (Mahābhārata) war, was indeed at the conclusion of that story before his father.'
अभिमन्योर्वधं वीरः सोऽत्यक्रामत भारत ।
अप्रियं वसुदेवस्य मा भूदिति महामनाः ॥२॥
2. abhimanyorvadhaṁ vīraḥ so'tyakrāmata bhārata ,
apriyaṁ vasudevasya mā bhūditi mahāmanāḥ.
2. abhimanyoḥ vadham vīraḥ saḥ atyakrāmat bhārata
apriyam vasudevasya mā bhūt iti mahāmanāḥ
2. bhārata saḥ vīraḥ mahāmanāḥ abhimanyoḥ vadham

2. O Bhārata, that great-minded hero (Krishna) omitted the narration of Abhimanyu's slaying, thinking, 'May this not be disagreeable to (Vasudeva).'
मा दौहित्रवधं श्रुत्वा वसुदेवो महात्ययम् ।
दुःखशोकाभिसंतप्तो भवेदिति महामतिः ॥३॥
3. mā dauhitravadhaṁ śrutvā vasudevo mahātyayam ,
duḥkhaśokābhisaṁtapto bhavediti mahāmatiḥ.
3. mā dauhitravadham śrutvā vasudevaḥ mahātyayam
duḥkhaśokābhisantaptaḥ bhavet iti mahāmatiḥ
3. Lest Vasudeva, the sagacious one, upon hearing of the great calamity of his grandson's death, should become overcome with intense sorrow and grief.
सुभद्रा तु तमुत्क्रान्तमात्मजस्य वधं रणे ।
आचक्ष्व कृष्ण सौभद्रवधमित्यपतद्भुवि ॥४॥
4. subhadrā tu tamutkrāntamātmajasya vadhaṁ raṇe ,
ācakṣva kṛṣṇa saubhadravadhamityapatadbhuvi.
4. subhadrā tu tam utkrāntam ātmajasya vadham raṇe
ācakṣva kṛṣṇa saubhadravadham iti apatat bhuvi
4. But Subhadra, referring to the death of her son (ātmaja) who had departed in battle, exclaimed, 'Tell me, Krishna, about Saubhadra's death!' - and with these words, she collapsed to the ground.
तामपश्यन्निपतितां वसुदेवः क्षितौ तदा ।
दृष्ट्वैव च पपातोर्व्यां सोऽपि दुःखेन मूर्छितः ॥५॥
5. tāmapaśyannipatitāṁ vasudevaḥ kṣitau tadā ,
dṛṣṭvaiva ca papātorvyāṁ so'pi duḥkhena mūrchitaḥ.
5. tām apaśyan nipatitām vasudevaḥ kṣitau tadā dṛṣṭvā
eva ca papāta urvyām saḥ api duḥkhena mūrcchitaḥ
5. Then Vasudeva, seeing her (Subhadra) fallen to the ground, himself, just upon seeing (her), also fell to the earth, unconscious with sorrow.
ततः स दौहित्रवधाद्दुःखशोकसमन्वितः ।
वसुदेवो महाराज कृष्णं वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. tataḥ sa dauhitravadhādduḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ ,
vasudevo mahārāja kṛṣṇaṁ vākyamathābravīt.
6. tataḥ saḥ dauhitravadhāt duḥkhaśokasammanvitaḥ
vasudevaḥ mahārāja kṛṣṇam vākyam atha abravīt
6. Thereafter, Vasudeva, filled with sorrow and grief due to his grandson's death, then spoke these words to Krishna, O great king.
ननु त्वं पुण्डरीकाक्ष सत्यवाग्भुवि विश्रुतः ।
यद्दौहित्रवधं मेऽद्य न ख्यापयसि शत्रुहन् ॥७॥
7. nanu tvaṁ puṇḍarīkākṣa satyavāgbhuvi viśrutaḥ ,
yaddauhitravadhaṁ me'dya na khyāpayasi śatruhan.
7. nanu tvam puṇḍarīkākṣa satyavāk bhuvi viśrutaḥ
yat dauhitravadham me adya na khyāpayasi śatruhant
7. O lotus-eyed one, surely you are renowned on earth as a speaker of truth. O slayer of enemies, why do you not inform me today about the death of my grandson?
तद्भागिनेयनिधनं तत्त्वेनाचक्ष्व मे विभो ।
सदृशाक्षस्तव कथं शत्रुभिर्निहतो रणे ॥८॥
8. tadbhāgineyanidhanaṁ tattvenācakṣva me vibho ,
sadṛśākṣastava kathaṁ śatrubhirnihato raṇe.
8. tat bhāgineya nidhanam tattvena ācakṣva me vibho
sadṛśākṣaḥ tava katham śatrubhiḥ nihataḥ raṇe
8. Therefore, tell me the truth, O all-pervading one, about the death of your nephew. How was one like him, your equal, slain by enemies in battle?
दुर्मरं बत वार्ष्णेय कालेऽप्राप्ते नृभिः सदा ।
यत्र मे हृदयं दुःखाच्छतधा न विदीर्यते ॥९॥
9. durmaraṁ bata vārṣṇeya kāle'prāpte nṛbhiḥ sadā ,
yatra me hṛdayaṁ duḥkhācchatadhā na vidīryate.
9. durmaram bata vārṣṇeya kāle aprāpte nṛbhiḥ sadā
yatra me hṛdayam duḥkhāt śatadhā na vidīryate
9. Alas, O Vārṣṇeya, it is truly difficult for men to die before their appointed time. How is it that my heart does not split into a hundred pieces from such grief?
किमब्रवीत्त्वा संग्रामे सुभद्रां मातरं प्रति ।
मां चापि पुण्डरीकाक्ष चपलाक्षः प्रियो मम ॥१०॥
10. kimabravīttvā saṁgrāme subhadrāṁ mātaraṁ prati ,
māṁ cāpi puṇḍarīkākṣa capalākṣaḥ priyo mama.
10. kim abravīt tvā saṃgrāme subhadrām mātaram prati
mām ca api puṇḍarīkākṣa capalākṣaḥ priyaḥ mama
10. O lotus-eyed one, what did my beloved, the swift-eyed one, say to you in battle concerning his mother Subhadra and also concerning me?
आहवं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा कच्चिन्न निहतः परैः ।
कच्चिन्मुखं न गोविन्द तेनाजौ विकृतं कृतम् ॥११॥
11. āhavaṁ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā kaccinna nihataḥ paraiḥ ,
kaccinmukhaṁ na govinda tenājau vikṛtaṁ kṛtam.
11. āhavam pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā kaccit na nihataḥ paraiḥ
kaccit mukham na govinda tena ajau vikṛtam kṛtam
11. govinda kaccit paraiḥ āhavam pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā na
nihataḥ kaccit tena ajau mukham na vikṛtam kṛtam
11. Having turned his back on the battle, I hope he was not killed by enemies. O Govinda, I hope his face was not disfigured in battle on that account.
स हि कृष्ण महातेजाः श्लाघन्निव ममाग्रतः ।
बालभावेन विजयमात्मनोऽकथयत्प्रभुः ॥१२॥
12. sa hi kṛṣṇa mahātejāḥ ślāghanniva mamāgrataḥ ,
bālabhāvena vijayamātmano'kathayatprabhuḥ.
12. saḥ hi kṛṣṇa mahātejāḥ ślāghan iva mama agrataḥ
bālabhāvena vijayam ātmanaḥ akathayat prabhuḥ
12. kṛṣṇa hi saḥ prabhuḥ mahātejāḥ mama agrataḥ
ślāghan iva bālabhāvena ātmanaḥ vijayam akathayat
12. Indeed, O Krishna, that mighty one, as if boasting before me, recounted his own victory due to his childishness.
कच्चिन्न विकृतो बालो द्रोणकर्णकृपादिभिः ।
धरण्यां निहतः शेते तन्ममाचक्ष्व केशव ॥१३॥
13. kaccinna vikṛto bālo droṇakarṇakṛpādibhiḥ ,
dharaṇyāṁ nihataḥ śete tanmamācakṣva keśava.
13. kaccit na vikṛtaḥ bālaḥ droṇakarṇakṛpādibhiḥ
dharaṇyām nihataḥ śete tat mama ācakṣva keśava
13. keśava mama tat ācakṣva kaccit bālaḥ
droṇakarṇakṛpādibhiḥ vikṛtaḥ nihataḥ na dharaṇyām śete
13. O Keśava, tell me, I hope the boy was not mutilated and killed by Droṇa, Karṇa, Kṛpa, and others, and now lies on the earth.
स हि द्रोणं च भीष्मं च कर्णं च रथिनां वरम् ।
स्पर्धते स्म रणे नित्यं दुहितुः पुत्रको मम ॥१४॥
14. sa hi droṇaṁ ca bhīṣmaṁ ca karṇaṁ ca rathināṁ varam ,
spardhate sma raṇe nityaṁ duhituḥ putrako mama.
14. saḥ hi droṇam ca bhīṣmam ca karṇam ca rathinām varam
spardhate sma raṇe nityam duhituḥ putrakaḥ mama
14. hi mama duhituḥ putrakaḥ saḥ raṇe nityam droṇam ca
bhīṣmam ca rathinām varam karṇam ca spardhate sma
14. Indeed, my daughter's dear son always used to compete with Droṇa, Bhīṣma, and Karṇa, the best among charioteers, in battle.
एवंविधं बहु तदा विलपन्तं सुदुःखितम् ।
पितरं दुःखिततरो गोविन्दो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. evaṁvidhaṁ bahu tadā vilapantaṁ suduḥkhitam ,
pitaraṁ duḥkhitataro govindo vākyamabravīt.
15. evaṃvidham bahu tadā vilapantam suduḥkhitam
pitaram duḥkhitataraḥ govindaḥ vākyam abravīt
15. tadā evaṃvidham bahu suduḥkhitam vilapantam
pitaram duḥkhitataraḥ govindaḥ vākyam abravīt
15. Then, seeing his father lamenting profusely in such a deeply distressed state, Govinda, who was even more distressed, spoke these words.
न तेन विकृतं वक्त्रं कृतं संग्राममूर्धनि ।
न पृष्ठतः कृतश्चापि संग्रामस्तेन दुस्तरः ॥१६॥
16. na tena vikṛtaṁ vaktraṁ kṛtaṁ saṁgrāmamūrdhani ,
na pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtaścāpi saṁgrāmastena dustaraḥ.
16. na tena vikṛtam vaktram kṛtam saṅgrāmamūrdhani na
pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtaḥ ca api saṅgrāmaḥ tena dustaraḥ
16. tena saṅgrāmamūrdhani vikṛtam vaktram na kṛtam,
ca api tena pṛṣṭhataḥ dustaraḥ saṅgrāmaḥ na kṛtaḥ.
16. He never made a distorted face on the battlefield, nor did he turn his back on that exceedingly difficult war.
निहत्य पृथिवीपालान्सहस्रशतसंघशः ।
खेदितो द्रोणकर्णाभ्यां दौःशासनिवशं गतः ॥१७॥
17. nihatya pṛthivīpālānsahasraśatasaṁghaśaḥ ,
khedito droṇakarṇābhyāṁ dauḥśāsanivaśaṁ gataḥ.
17. nihatya pṛthivīpālān sahasraśatasaṅghaśaḥ
kheditaḥ droṇakarṇābhyām dauḥśāsanivaśam gataḥ
17. sahasraśatasaṅghaśaḥ pṛthivīpālān nihatya,
droṇakarṇābhyām kheditaḥ,
dauḥśāsanivaśam gataḥ.
17. After striking down thousands upon thousands of kings, he was exhausted by Droṇa and Karṇa and eventually fell under the control of Duḥśāsana's son.
एको ह्येकेन सततं युध्यमानो यदि प्रभो ।
न स शक्येत संग्रामे निहन्तुमपि वज्रिणा ॥१८॥
18. eko hyekena satataṁ yudhyamāno yadi prabho ,
na sa śakyeta saṁgrāme nihantumapi vajriṇā.
18. ekaḥ hi ekena satatam yudhyamānaḥ yadi prabho
na saḥ śakyeta saṅgrāme nihantum api vajriṇā
18. prabho,
yadi ekaḥ hi ekena satatam yudhyamānaḥ,
saḥ saṅgrāme vajriṇā api nihantum na śakyeta.
18. O Lord, if one person were to constantly fight alone against another, he could not be killed in battle, not even by Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt.
समाहूते तु संग्रामे पार्थे संशप्तकैस्तदा ।
पर्यवार्यत संक्रुद्धैः स द्रोणादिभिराहवे ॥१९॥
19. samāhūte tu saṁgrāme pārthe saṁśaptakaistadā ,
paryavāryata saṁkruddhaiḥ sa droṇādibhirāhave.
19. samāhūte tu saṃgrāme pārthe saṃśaptakaiḥ tadā
paryavāryata saṃkruddhaiḥ sa droṇādibhiḥ āhave
19. tu tadā saṃgrāme samāhūte pārthe saṃśaptakaiḥ
sa droṇādibhiḥ saṃkruddhaiḥ āhave paryavāryata
19. Indeed, when Pārtha (Arjuna) was summoned to battle by the Saṃśaptakas, he was then surrounded in that combat by Droṇa and other greatly enraged warriors.
ततः शत्रुक्षयं कृत्वा सुमहान्तं रणे पितुः ।
दौहित्रस्तव वार्ष्णेय दौःशासनिवशं गतः ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ śatrukṣayaṁ kṛtvā sumahāntaṁ raṇe pituḥ ,
dauhitrastava vārṣṇeya dauḥśāsanivaśaṁ gataḥ.
20. tataḥ śatrukṣayam kṛtvā sumahāntam raṇe pituḥ
dauhitraḥ tava vārṣṇeya dauḥśāsanivaśam gataḥ
20. tataḥ vārṣṇeya tava dauhitraḥ raṇe pituḥ
sumahāntam śatrukṣayam kṛtvā dauḥśāsanivaśam gataḥ
20. Then, O Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa), your nephew, having wrought great destruction of enemies in battle for his father, fell into the hands of Duḥśāsani.
नूनं च स गतः स्वर्गं जहि शोकं महामते ।
न हि व्यसनमासाद्य सीदन्ते सन्नराः क्वचित् ॥२१॥
21. nūnaṁ ca sa gataḥ svargaṁ jahi śokaṁ mahāmate ,
na hi vyasanamāsādya sīdante sannarāḥ kvacit.
21. nūnam ca sa gataḥ svargam jahi śokam mahāmate
na hi vyasanam āsādya sīdante sannarāḥ kvacit
21. nūnam ca sa svargam gataḥ mahāmate śokam jahi
hi sannarāḥ kvacit vyasanam āsādya na sīdante
21. Certainly, he (Abhimanyu) has gone to heaven. Therefore, O great-minded one, abandon your grief, for virtuous people never despond when they encounter misfortune.
द्रोणकर्णप्रभृतयो येन प्रतिसमासिताः ।
रणे महेन्द्रप्रतिमाः स कथं नाप्नुयाद्दिवम् ॥२२॥
22. droṇakarṇaprabhṛtayo yena pratisamāsitāḥ ,
raṇe mahendrapratimāḥ sa kathaṁ nāpnuyāddivam.
22. droṇakarṇaprabhṛtayaḥ yena pratisamāsitāḥ raṇe
mahendrapratimāḥ sa katham na āpnuyāt divam
22. yena raṇe mahendrapratimāḥ droṇakarṇaprabhṛtayaḥ
pratisamāsitāḥ sa divam katham na āpnuyāt
22. How could he, by whom Droṇa, Karṇa, and other warriors resembling mighty Indra were confronted in battle, not attain heaven?
स शोकं जहि दुर्धर्ष मा च मन्युवशं गमः ।
शस्त्रपूतां हि स गतिं गतः परपुरंजयः ॥२३॥
23. sa śokaṁ jahi durdharṣa mā ca manyuvaśaṁ gamaḥ ,
śastrapūtāṁ hi sa gatiṁ gataḥ parapuraṁjayaḥ.
23. sa śokam jahi durdharṣa mā ca manyuvaśam gamaḥ
śastrapūtām hi sa gatim gataḥ parapurañjayaḥ
23. durdharṣa sa śokam jahi ca manyuvaśam mā gamaḥ
hi sa parapurañjayaḥ śastrapūtām gatim gataḥ
23. O formidable one, cast off that grief and do not fall prey to anger. For he, the conqueror of enemy cities, has indeed attained a destination purified by weapons.
तस्मिंस्तु निहते वीरे सुभद्रेयं स्वसा मम ।
दुःखार्ताथो पृथां प्राप्य कुररीव ननाद ह ॥२४॥
24. tasmiṁstu nihate vīre subhadreyaṁ svasā mama ,
duḥkhārtātho pṛthāṁ prāpya kurarīva nanāda ha.
24. tasmin tu nihate vīre subhadrā iyam svasā mama
duḥkhārtā atha pṛthām prāpya kurarī iva nanāda ha
24. tu tasmin vīre nihate,
mama svasā Subhadrā iyam duḥkhārtā atha Pṛthām prāpya kurarī iva ha nanāda
24. But when that hero was slain, my sister Subhadrā, overcome with sorrow, then approached Pṛthā (Kunti) and wailed like a curlew.
द्रौपदीं च समासाद्य पर्यपृच्छत दुःखिता ।
आर्ये क्व दारकाः सर्वे द्रष्टुमिच्छामि तानहम् ॥२५॥
25. draupadīṁ ca samāsādya paryapṛcchata duḥkhitā ,
ārye kva dārakāḥ sarve draṣṭumicchāmi tānaham.
25. draupadīm ca samāsādya paryapṛcchata duḥkhitā
ārye kva dārakāḥ sarve draṣṭum icchāmi tān aham
25. ca duḥkhitā Draupadīm samāsādya paryapṛcchata: "Ārye,
sarve dārakāḥ kva? aham tān draṣṭum icchāmi.
"
25. Distressed, she then approached Draupadī and asked: 'Noble lady, where are all the children? I wish to see them.'
अस्यास्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा सर्वास्ताः कुरुयोषितः ।
भुजाभ्यां परिगृह्यैनां चुक्रुशुः परमार्तवत् ॥२६॥
26. asyāstu vacanaṁ śrutvā sarvāstāḥ kuruyoṣitaḥ ,
bhujābhyāṁ parigṛhyaināṁ cukruśuḥ paramārtavat.
26. asyāḥ tu vacanam śrutvā sarvāḥ tāḥ kuruyoṣitaḥ
bhujābhyām parigṛhya enām cukruśuḥ paramārtavat
26. tu asyāḥ vacanam śrutvā,
sarvāḥ tāḥ kuruyoṣitaḥ bhujābhyām enām parigṛhya,
paramārtavat cukruśuḥ
26. But hearing her words, all those Kuru women embraced her with their arms and wailed, as if in extreme anguish.
उत्तरां चाब्रवीद्भद्रा भद्रे भर्ता क्व ते गतः ।
क्षिप्रमागमनं मह्यं तस्मै त्वं वेदयस्व ह ॥२७॥
27. uttarāṁ cābravīdbhadrā bhadre bhartā kva te gataḥ ,
kṣipramāgamanaṁ mahyaṁ tasmai tvaṁ vedayasva ha.
27. uttarām ca abravīt bhadrā bhadre bhartā kva te gataḥ
kṣipram āgamanam mahyam tasmai tvam vedayasva ha
27. bhadrā ca uttarām abravīt,
"bhadre,
te bhartā kva gataḥ? tvam kṣipram mahyam āgamanam tasmai vedayasva ha.
"
27. Bhadrā then said to Uttarā, "O Bhadrā, where has your husband gone? You must quickly inform him of my arrival."
ननु नाम स वैराटि श्रुत्वा मम गिरं पुरा ।
भवनान्निष्पतत्याशु कस्मान्नाभ्येति ते पतिः ॥२८॥
28. nanu nāma sa vairāṭi śrutvā mama giraṁ purā ,
bhavanānniṣpatatyāśu kasmānnābhyeti te patiḥ.
28. nanu nāma saḥ vairāṭi śrutvā mama giram purā
bhavanāt niṣpatati āśu kasmāt na abhyeti te patiḥ
28. nanu nāma saḥ vairāṭi mama giram purā śrutvā āśu bhavanāt niṣpatati.
kasmāt te patiḥ na abhyeti?
28. Surely, that son of Virāṭa, having heard my words before, would quickly rush out from the palace. Why does your husband not come to me now?
अभिमन्यो कुशलिनो मातुलास्ते महारथाः ।
कुशलं चाब्रुवन्सर्वे त्वां युयुत्सुमिहागतम् ॥२९॥
29. abhimanyo kuśalino mātulāste mahārathāḥ ,
kuśalaṁ cābruvansarve tvāṁ yuyutsumihāgatam.
29. abhimanyu kuśalinaḥ mātulāḥ te mahārathāḥ
kuśalam ca abruvan sarve tvām yuyutsum iha āgatam
29. abhimanyu,
te mātulāḥ mahārathāḥ kuśalinaḥ (santi)? sarve ca tvām iha yuyutsum āgatam kuśalam abruvan.
29. O Abhimanyu, are your maternal uncles, the great charioteers, well? All of them also inquired about your well-being, as you have arrived here eager to fight.
आचक्ष्व मेऽद्य संग्रामं यथापूर्वमरिंदम ।
कस्मादेव विलपतीं नाद्येह प्रतिभाषसे ॥३०॥
30. ācakṣva me'dya saṁgrāmaṁ yathāpūrvamariṁdama ,
kasmādeva vilapatīṁ nādyeha pratibhāṣase.
30. ācakṣva me adya saṅgrāmam yathāpūrvam ariṃdama
kasmāt eva vilapatīm na adya iha pratibhāṣase
30. ariṃdama,
adya me saṅgrāmam yathāpūrvam ācakṣva.
kasmāt eva adya iha vilapatīm na pratibhāṣase?
30. O vanquisher of foes, tell me today about the battle as before. Why do you not speak to me today, who am lamenting here?
एवमादि तु वार्ष्णेय्यास्तदस्याः परिदेवितम् ।
श्रुत्वा पृथा सुदुःखार्ता शनैर्वाक्यमथाब्रवीत् ॥३१॥
31. evamādi tu vārṣṇeyyāstadasyāḥ paridevitam ,
śrutvā pṛthā suduḥkhārtā śanairvākyamathābravīt.
31. evam ādi tu vārṣṇeyyāḥ tat asyāḥ paridevitam śrutvā
pṛthā suduḥkha-ārtā śanaiḥ vākyam atha abravīt
31. pṛthā suduḥkha-ārtā vārṣṇeyyāḥ tat asyāḥ evam
ādi paridevitam śrutvā atha śanaiḥ vākyam abravīt
31. Having heard this lamentation and similar words from Subhadra (the Vrishni woman), Kunti, deeply distressed, then slowly spoke.
सुभद्रे वासुदेवेन तथा सात्यकिना रणे ।
पित्रा च पालितो बालः स हतः कालधर्मणा ॥३२॥
32. subhadre vāsudevena tathā sātyakinā raṇe ,
pitrā ca pālito bālaḥ sa hataḥ kāladharmaṇā.
32. subhadre vāsudevena tathā sātyakinā raṇe
pitrā ca pālitaḥ bālaḥ sa hataḥ kāla-dharmaṇā
32. subhadre! raṇe vāsudevena tathā sātyakinā ca
pitrā pālitaḥ saḥ bālaḥ kāla-dharmaṇā hataḥ
32. O Subhadra, that child, who was protected in battle by Vasudeva (Krishna), by Satyaki, and by his father (Arjuna), was nevertheless slain by the natural law (kāla dharma) of time.
ईदृशो मर्त्यधर्मोऽयं मा शुचो यदुनन्दिनि ।
पुत्रो हि तव दुर्धर्षः संप्राप्तः परमां गतिम् ॥३३॥
33. īdṛśo martyadharmo'yaṁ mā śuco yadunandini ,
putro hi tava durdharṣaḥ saṁprāptaḥ paramāṁ gatim.
33. īdṛśaḥ martya-dharmaḥ ayam mā śucaḥ yadunandini
putraḥ hi tava durdharṣaḥ samprāptaḥ paramām gatim
33. yadunandini! ayam martya-dharmaḥ īdṛśaḥ mā śucaḥ
hi tava durdharṣaḥ putraḥ paramām gatim samprāptaḥ
33. Such is the natural law (dharma) for mortals; do not grieve, O joy of the Yadus (Subhadra)! Your son, who was irresistible, has indeed attained the supreme state.
कुले महति जातासि क्षत्रियाणां महात्मनाम् ।
मा शुचश्चपलाक्षं त्वं पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणे ॥३४॥
34. kule mahati jātāsi kṣatriyāṇāṁ mahātmanām ,
mā śucaścapalākṣaṁ tvaṁ puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇe.
34. kule mahati jātā asi kṣatriyāṇām mahā-ātmanām mā
śucaḥ capala-akṣi tvam puṇḍarīka-nibha-īkṣaṇe
34. capala-akṣi puṇḍarīka-nibha-īkṣaṇe! tvam mahati
mahā-ātmanām kṣatriyāṇām kule jātā asi mā śucaḥ
34. You were born into a great lineage of magnanimous warriors (kṣatriyas). Do not grieve, O you with beautiful, restless eyes, whose gaze resembles lotus flowers!
उत्तरां त्वमवेक्षस्व गर्भिणीं मा शुचः शुभे ।
पुत्रमेषा हि तस्याशु जनयिष्यति भामिनी ॥३५॥
35. uttarāṁ tvamavekṣasva garbhiṇīṁ mā śucaḥ śubhe ,
putrameṣā hi tasyāśu janayiṣyati bhāminī.
35. uttarām tvam avekṣasva garbhīṇīm mā śucaḥ śubhe
putram eṣā hi tasyāḥ āśu janayiṣyati bhāminī
35. śubhe tvam garbhīṇīm uttarām avekṣasva mā śucaḥ
hi eṣā bhāminī tasyāḥ putram āśu janayiṣyati
35. You should look after Uttara, who is pregnant. Do not grieve, O auspicious one! Indeed, this lady will soon give birth to her son.
एवमाश्वासयित्वैनां कुन्ती यदुकुलोद्वह ।
विहाय शोकं दुर्धर्षं श्राद्धमस्य ह्यकल्पयत् ॥३६॥
36. evamāśvāsayitvaināṁ kuntī yadukulodvaha ,
vihāya śokaṁ durdharṣaṁ śrāddhamasya hyakalpayat.
36. evam āśvāsayitvā enām kuntī yadukula-udvaha vihāya
śokam durdharṣam śrāddham asya hi akalpayat
36. yadukula-udvaha kuntī evam enām āśvāsayitvā
durdharṣam śokam vihāya asya hi śrāddham akalpayat
36. Having thus consoled her (Uttara), Kunti, O best among the Yadu clan, abandoning her unbearable sorrow, then arranged the funeral ritual (śrāddha) for him.
समनुज्ञाप्य धर्मज्ञा राजानं भीममेव च ।
यमौ यमोपमौ चैव ददौ दानान्यनेकशः ॥३७॥
37. samanujñāpya dharmajñā rājānaṁ bhīmameva ca ,
yamau yamopamau caiva dadau dānānyanekaśaḥ.
37. samanujñāpya dharma-jñā rājānam bhīmam eva ca
yamau yama-upamau ca eva dadau dānāni anekaśaḥ
37. dharma-jñā rājānam bhīmam ca eva yamau yama-upamau
ca eva samanujñāpya dānāni anekaśaḥ dadau
37. Having obtained the assent of the king and Bhima, as well as the twins who were like Yama, Kunti, being conversant with natural law (dharma), gave various donations (dāna).
ततः प्रदाय बह्वीर्गा ब्राह्मणेभ्यो यदूद्वह ।
समहृष्यत वार्ष्णेयी वैराटीं चाब्रवीदिदम् ॥३८॥
38. tataḥ pradāya bahvīrgā brāhmaṇebhyo yadūdvaha ,
samahṛṣyata vārṣṇeyī vairāṭīṁ cābravīdidam.
38. tataḥ pradāya bahvīḥ gāḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ yadu-udvaha
samahṛṣyata vārṣṇeyī vairāṭīm ca abravīt idam
38. yadudvaha tataḥ bahvīḥ gāḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ pradāya
vārṣṇeyī samahṛṣyata ca vairāṭīm idam abravīt
38. Then, having bestowed many cows upon the Brahmins, O foremost of the Yadus, Kunti, the Vrishni lady, rejoiced and spoke this to Uttara, the princess of Virata.
वैराटि नेह संतापस्त्वया कार्यो यशस्विनि ।
भर्तारं प्रति सुश्रोणि गर्भस्थं रक्ष मे शिशुम् ॥३९॥
39. vairāṭi neha saṁtāpastvayā kāryo yaśasvini ,
bhartāraṁ prati suśroṇi garbhasthaṁ rakṣa me śiśum.
39. vairāṭi na iha saṃtāpaḥ tvayā kāryaḥ yaśasvini
bhartāram prati suśroṇi garbhastham rakṣa me śiśum
39. yaśasvini vairāṭi suśroṇi iha tvayā saṃtāpaḥ na
kāryaḥ bhartāram prati me garbhastham śiśum rakṣa
39. O glorious one, daughter of Virata, you should not feel sorrow now. O beautiful-hipped one, for the sake of your husband, protect my grandchild, who is still in the womb.
एवमुक्त्वा ततः कुन्ती विरराम महाद्युते ।
तामनुज्ञाप्य चैवेमां सुभद्रां समुपानयम् ॥४०॥
40. evamuktvā tataḥ kuntī virarāma mahādyute ,
tāmanujñāpya caivemāṁ subhadrāṁ samupānayam.
40. evam uktvā tataḥ kuntī virarāma mahādyute tām
anujñāpya ca eva imām subhadrām samupānayam
40. mahādyute evam uktvā tataḥ kuntī virarāma tām

40. Having spoken thus, O greatly radiant one, Kunti then ceased. And having taken leave of her (Uttaraa), I then brought this Subhadra.
एवं स निधनं प्राप्तो दौहित्रस्तव माधव ।
संतापं जहि दुर्धर्ष मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ॥४१॥
41. evaṁ sa nidhanaṁ prāpto dauhitrastava mādhava ,
saṁtāpaṁ jahi durdharṣa mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ.
41. evam saḥ nidhanam prāptaḥ dauhitraḥ tava mādhava
saṃtāpam jahi durdharṣa mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ
41. mādhava evam saḥ tava dauhitraḥ nidhanam prāptaḥ
durdharṣa saṃtāpam jahi ca manaḥ śoke mā kṛthāḥ
41. Thus, O Madhava, your grandson met his death. O unconquerable one, abandon your sorrow, and do not let your mind dwell in grief.
