युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
एवं तदा प्रयाचन्तं भास्करं मुनिसत्तमः ।
जमदग्निर्महातेजाः किं कार्यं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥१॥

evaṁ tadā prayācantaṁ bhāskaraṁ munisattamaḥ ,
jamadagnirmahātejāḥ kiṁ kāryaṁ pratyapadyata.

1. Yudhishthira said: What action did Jamadagni, the best of sages and of great splendor, take in response to Bhāskara (the sun god) who was thus, at that time, earnestly imploring him?
भीष्म उवाच ।
तथा प्रयाचमानस्य मुनिरग्निसमप्रभः ।
जमदग्निः शमं नैव जगाम कुरुनन्दन ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tathā prayācamānasya muniragnisamaprabhaḥ ,
jamadagniḥ śamaṁ naiva jagāma kurunandana.

jamadagniḥ śamam na eva jagāma kurunandana

2. Bhishma said: O delight of the Kurus (Kuru-nandana)! Even when (Bhāskara was) thus imploring, the sage Jamadagni, luminous like fire, certainly did not attain peace (śama).
ततः सूर्यो मधुरया वाचा तमिदमब्रवीत् ।
कृताञ्जलिर्विप्ररूपी प्रणम्येदं विशां पते ॥३॥
3. tataḥ sūryo madhurayā vācā tamidamabravīt ,
kṛtāñjalirviprarūpī praṇamyedaṁ viśāṁ pate.
3. tataḥ sūryaḥ madhurayā vācā tam idam abravīt
kṛtāñjaliḥ viprarūpī praṇamya idam viśām pate
3. viśām pate tataḥ sūryaḥ viprarūpī kṛtāñjaliḥ
praṇamya madhurayā vācā tam idam abravīt
3. Then, O lord of the people, Sūrya (the sun god), in the form of a brahmin, having respectfully made a reverential gesture (kṛtāñjali) and bowed, spoke these words to him in a sweet voice.
चलं निमित्तं विप्रर्षे सदा सूर्यस्य गच्छतः ।
कथं चलं वेत्स्यसि त्वं सदा यान्तं दिवाकरम् ॥४॥
4. calaṁ nimittaṁ viprarṣe sadā sūryasya gacchataḥ ,
kathaṁ calaṁ vetsyasi tvaṁ sadā yāntaṁ divākaram.
4. calam nimittam viprarṣe sadā sūryasya gacchataḥ
katham calam vetsyasi tvam sadā yāntam divākaram
4. viprarṣe sadā gacchataḥ sūryasya calam nimittam
tvam sadā yāntam divākaram calam katham vetsyasi
4. O brahmin-sage (viprarṣe)! The mark (nimitta) for the constantly moving sun (Sūrya) is itself unstable. How will you, yourself, be able to perceive the ever-moving sun (Divākara) and its unstable mark?
जमदग्निरुवाच ।
स्थिरं वापि चलं वापि जाने त्वां ज्ञानचक्षुषा ।
अवश्यं विनयाधानं कार्यमद्य मया तव ॥५॥
5. jamadagniruvāca ,
sthiraṁ vāpi calaṁ vāpi jāne tvāṁ jñānacakṣuṣā ,
avaśyaṁ vinayādhānaṁ kāryamadya mayā tava.
5. jamadagniḥ uvāca sthiram vā api calam vā api jāne tvām
jñānacakṣuṣā avaśyam vinayādhānam kāryam adya mayā tava
5. jamadagniḥ uvāca jñānacakṣuṣā tvām sthiram vā api calam
vā api jāne adya mayā tava vinayādhānam avaśyam kāryam
5. Jamadagni said: 'Whether steady or moving, I know you with the eye of knowledge. It is certainly necessary for me today to instill humility in you.'
अपराह्णे निमेषार्धं तिष्ठसि त्वं दिवाकर ।
तत्र वेत्स्यामि सूर्य त्वां न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥६॥
6. aparāhṇe nimeṣārdhaṁ tiṣṭhasi tvaṁ divākara ,
tatra vetsyāmi sūrya tvāṁ na me'trāsti vicāraṇā.
6. aparāhṇe nimeṣārdham tiṣṭhasi tvam divākara tatra
vetsyāmi sūrya tvām na me atra asti vicāraṇā
6. divākara sūrya tvam aparāhṇe nimeṣārdham tiṣṭhasi
tatra tvām vetsyāmi atra me vicāraṇā na asti
6. O maker of day (divākara), you pause for half a moment in the afternoon. At that time, O Sun (sūrya), I will truly know you; I have no doubt about this.
सूर्य उवाच ।
असंशयं मां विप्रर्षे वेत्स्यसे धन्विनां वर ।
अपकारिणं तु मां विद्धि भगवञ्शरणागतम् ॥७॥
7. sūrya uvāca ,
asaṁśayaṁ māṁ viprarṣe vetsyase dhanvināṁ vara ,
apakāriṇaṁ tu māṁ viddhi bhagavañśaraṇāgatam.
7. sūryaḥ uvāca asaṃśayam mām viprarṣe vetsyase dhanvinām
vara apakāriṇam tu mām viddhi bhagavan śaraṇāgatam
7. sūryaḥ uvāca viprarṣe dhanvinām vara mām asaṃśayam
vetsyase tu bhagavan mām apakāriṇam śaraṇāgatam viddhi
7. The Sun said: 'O brahmin sage (viprarṣi), O best among archers, you will undoubtedly know me. But, O venerable one (bhagavan), know me, the one who has caused harm, as having sought your refuge.'
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततः प्रहस्य भगवाञ्जमदग्निरुवाच तम् ।
न भीः सूर्य त्वया कार्या प्रणिपातगतो ह्यसि ॥८॥
8. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tataḥ prahasya bhagavāñjamadagniruvāca tam ,
na bhīḥ sūrya tvayā kāryā praṇipātagato hyasi.
8. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tataḥ prahasya bhagavān jamadagniḥ uvāca
tam na bhīḥ sūrya tvayā kāryā praṇipātagataḥ hi asi
8. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tataḥ bhagavān jamadagniḥ prahasya tam
uvāca sūrya tvayā bhīḥ na kāryā hi praṇipātagataḥ asi
8. Bhishma said: 'Then, the venerable (bhagavan) Jamadagni, smiling, said to him (the Sun): "O Sun, you should not fear, for you have indeed sought refuge."'
ब्राह्मणेष्वार्जवं यच्च स्थैर्यं च धरणीतले ।
सौम्यतां चैव सोमस्य गाम्भीर्यं वरुणस्य च ॥९॥
9. brāhmaṇeṣvārjavaṁ yacca sthairyaṁ ca dharaṇītale ,
saumyatāṁ caiva somasya gāmbhīryaṁ varuṇasya ca.
9. brāhmaṇeṣu ārjavam yat ca sthairyam ca dharaṇītale
saumyatām ca eva somasya gāmbhīryam varuṇasya ca
9. And the integrity that exists among brahmins, and the steadfastness on the earth; and indeed the gentleness of Soma, and the profundity of Varuṇa.
दीप्तिमग्नेः प्रभां मेरोः प्रतापं तपनस्य च ।
एतान्यतिक्रमेद्यो वै स हन्याच्छरणागतम् ॥१०॥
10. dīptimagneḥ prabhāṁ meroḥ pratāpaṁ tapanasya ca ,
etānyatikramedyo vai sa hanyāccharaṇāgatam.
10. dīptim agneḥ prabhām meroḥ pratāpam tapanasya ca
etāni atikramet yaḥ vai saḥ hanyāt śaraṇāgatam
10. The brilliance of Agni, the radiance of Meru, and the majesty of the sun. Indeed, whoever violates these qualities, that person is considered to have killed a refugee.
भवेत्स गुरुतल्पी च ब्रह्महा च तथा भवेत् ।
सुरापानं च कुर्यात्स यो हन्याच्छरणागतम् ॥११॥
11. bhavetsa gurutalpī ca brahmahā ca tathā bhavet ,
surāpānaṁ ca kuryātsa yo hanyāccharaṇāgatam.
11. bhavet saḥ gurutalpī ca brahmahā ca tathā bhavet
surāpānam ca kuryāt saḥ yaḥ hanyāt śaraṇāgatam
11. Whoever kills a refugee is considered a defiler of the (guru) teacher's bed and a slayer of a brahmin (brahmahā). And that person would also commit the grave sin of drinking liquor.
एतस्य त्वपनीतस्य समाधिं तात चिन्तय ।
यथा सुखगमः पन्था भवेत्त्वद्रश्मितापितः ॥१२॥
12. etasya tvapanītasya samādhiṁ tāta cintaya ,
yathā sukhagamaḥ panthā bhavettvadraśmitāpitaḥ.
12. etasya tu apanītasya samādhim tāta cintaya
yathā sukhagamaḥ panthāḥ bhavet tvadraśmitāpitaḥ
12. But for this disgraced one, dear one (tāta), consider a resolution (samādhi), so that the path may become easily traversable, warmed by your guidance.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एतावदुक्त्वा स तदा तूष्णीमासीद्भृगूद्वहः ।
अथ सूर्यो ददौ तस्मै छत्रोपानहमाशु वै ॥१३॥
13. bhīṣma uvāca ,
etāvaduktvā sa tadā tūṣṇīmāsīdbhṛgūdvahaḥ ,
atha sūryo dadau tasmai chatropānahamāśu vai.
13. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca etāvat uktvā saḥ tadā tūṣṇīm āsīt
bhṛgūdvahaḥ atha sūryaḥ dadau tasmai chatropānaham āśu vai
13. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca saḥ bhṛgūdvahaḥ etāvat uktvā tadā tūṣṇīm
āsīt atha sūryaḥ tasmai chatropānaham āśu vai dadau
13. Bhishma said: Having said this much, that descendant of Bhṛgu then became silent. Then the Sun quickly gave him an umbrella and sandals.
सूर्य उवाच ।
महर्षे शिरसस्त्राणं छत्रं मद्रश्मिवारणम् ।
प्रतिगृह्णीष्व पद्भ्यां च त्राणार्थं चर्मपादुके ॥१४॥
14. sūrya uvāca ,
maharṣe śirasastrāṇaṁ chatraṁ madraśmivāraṇam ,
pratigṛhṇīṣva padbhyāṁ ca trāṇārthaṁ carmapāduke.
14. sūryaḥ uvāca maharṣe śirasaḥ trāṇam chatram madraśmivāraṇam
pratigṛhṇīṣva padbhyām ca trāṇārtham carmapāduke
14. sūryaḥ uvāca maharṣe śirasaḥ trāṇam madraśmivāraṇam
chatram ca padbhyām trāṇārtham carmapāduke pratigṛhṇīṣva
14. The Sun said: 'O great sage (maharṣi), accept this umbrella as protection for your head and a shield against my rays. Also, accept these leather sandals for the protection of your feet.'
अद्यप्रभृति चैवैतल्लोके संप्रचरिष्यति ।
पुण्यदानेषु सर्वेषु परमक्षय्यमेव च ॥१५॥
15. adyaprabhṛti caivaitalloke saṁpracariṣyati ,
puṇyadāneṣu sarveṣu paramakṣayyameva ca.
15. adyaprabhṛti ca eva etat loke saṃpracariṣyati
puṇyadāneṣu sarveṣu paramakṣayyam eva ca
15. adyaprabhṛti ca eva etat loke saṃpracariṣyati
ca sarveṣu puṇyadāneṣu eva paramakṣayyam
15. From today onwards, this (practice of donating umbrellas and sandals) will indeed become prevalent in the world. And in all acts of meritorious giving (dāna), it will be supremely everlasting.
भीष्म उवाच ।
उपानच्छत्रमेतद्वै सूर्येणेह प्रवर्तितम् ।
पुण्यमेतदभिख्यातं त्रिषु लोकेषु भारत ॥१६॥
16. bhīṣma uvāca ,
upānacchatrametadvai sūryeṇeha pravartitam ,
puṇyametadabhikhyātaṁ triṣu lokeṣu bhārata.
16. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca upānat chatram etat vai sūryeṇa iha
pravartitam puṇyam etat abhikhyātam triṣu lokeṣu bhārata
16. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca bhārata etat upānat chatram vai sūryeṇa
iha pravartitam ca etat puṇyam triṣu lokeṣu abhikhyātam
16. Bhishma said: 'O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata), this custom of (donating) sandals and an umbrella was indeed established here by Sūrya. This meritorious deed is renowned throughout the three worlds.'
तस्मात्प्रयच्छ विप्रेभ्यश्छत्रोपानहमुत्तमम् ।
धर्मस्ते सुमहान्भावी न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥१७॥
17. tasmātprayaccha viprebhyaśchatropānahamuttamam ,
dharmaste sumahānbhāvī na me'trāsti vicāraṇā.
17. tasmāt prayaccha viprebhyaḥ chatropānaham uttamam
dharmaḥ te sumahān bhāvī na me atra asti vicāraṇā
17. tasmāt viprebhyaḥ uttamam chatropānaham prayaccha
te sumahān dharmaḥ bhāvī atra me vicāraṇā na asti
17. Therefore, give excellent umbrellas and sandals to the brahmins. Your religious merit (dharma) will be immense; I have no doubt about this.
छत्रं हि भरतश्रेष्ठ यः प्रदद्याद्द्विजातये ।
शुभ्रं शतशलाकं वै स प्रेत्य सुखमेधते ॥१८॥
18. chatraṁ hi bharataśreṣṭha yaḥ pradadyāddvijātaye ,
śubhraṁ śataśalākaṁ vai sa pretya sukhamedhate.
18. chatram hi bharataśreṣṭha yaḥ pradadyāt dvijātaye
śubhram śataśalākam vai saḥ pretya sukham edhate
18. bharataśreṣṭha,
yaḥ śubhram śataśalākam chatram dvijātaye pradadyāt,
saḥ vai pretya sukham edhate
18. Indeed, O best among the Bharatas, whoever gives a brilliant umbrella with a hundred ribs to a twice-born, he certainly attains happiness after passing away.
स शक्रलोके वसति पूज्यमानो द्विजातिभिः ।
अप्सरोभिश्च सततं देवैश्च भरतर्षभ ॥१९॥
19. sa śakraloke vasati pūjyamāno dvijātibhiḥ ,
apsarobhiśca satataṁ devaiśca bharatarṣabha.
19. saḥ śakraloke vasati pūjyamānaḥ dvijātibhiḥ
apsarobhiḥ ca satatam devaiḥ ca bharatarṣabha
19. bharatarṣabha,
saḥ śakraloke dvijātibhiḥ apsarobhiḥ ca devaiḥ ca satatam pūjyamānaḥ vasati
19. O bull among the Bharatas, he dwells in Indra's realm, constantly honored by the twice-born, by Apsaras, and by the gods.
दह्यमानाय विप्राय यः प्रयच्छत्युपानहौ ।
स्नातकाय महाबाहो संशिताय द्विजातये ॥२०॥
20. dahyamānāya viprāya yaḥ prayacchatyupānahau ,
snātakāya mahābāho saṁśitāya dvijātaye.
20. dahyamānāya viprāya yaḥ prayacchati upānahau
snātakāya mahābāho saṃśitāya dvijātaye
20. mahābāho,
yaḥ dahyamānāya snātakāya saṃśitāya dvijātaye viprāya upānahau prayacchati
20. O mighty-armed one, whoever gives sandals to a brahmin - to a twice-born who is suffering from heat, to a consecrated graduate, and is disciplined.
सोऽपि लोकानवाप्नोति दैवतैरभिपूजितान् ।
गोलोके स मुदा युक्तो वसति प्रेत्य भारत ॥२१॥
21. so'pi lokānavāpnoti daivatairabhipūjitān ,
goloke sa mudā yukto vasati pretya bhārata.
21. saḥ api lokān avāpnoti devataiḥ abhipūjitān
goloke saḥ mudā yuktaḥ vasati pretya bhārata
21. bhārata saḥ api devataiḥ abhipūjitān lokān
avāpnoti pretya goloke saḥ mudā yuktaḥ vasati
21. He also attains worlds that are honored by the deities. After death, O Bhārata, he dwells in Goloka, filled with joy.
एतत्ते भरतश्रेष्ठ मया कार्त्स्न्येन कीर्तितम् ।
छत्रोपानहदानस्य फलं भरतसत्तम ॥२२॥
22. etatte bharataśreṣṭha mayā kārtsnyena kīrtitam ,
chatropānahadānasya phalaṁ bharatasattama.
22. etat te bharataśreṣṭha mayā kārtsnyena kīrtitam
chatropānahadānasya phalam bharatasattama
22. bharataśreṣṭha bharatasattama mayā
chatropānahadānasya phalam etat te kārtsnyena kīrtitam
22. O best of Bharatas, I have fully described to you the fruit of giving umbrellas and sandals, O most excellent of Bharatas.
