एवं बहुगुणं सैन्यमेवं बहुविधं परम् ।
व्यूढमेवं यथाशास्त्रममोघं चैव संजय ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
evaṁ bahuguṇaṁ sainyamevaṁ bahuvidhaṁ param ,
vyūḍhamevaṁ yathāśāstramamoghaṁ caiva saṁjaya.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra spoke: 'O Sañjaya, this army (of ours) is indeed so excellent, so diverse, supreme, thus arrayed according to scriptural injunctions, and unfailing.'
पुष्टमस्माकमत्यन्तमभिकामं च नः सदा ।
प्रह्वमव्यसनोपेतं पुरस्ताद्दृष्टविक्रमम् ॥२॥
2. puṣṭamasmākamatyantamabhikāmaṁ ca naḥ sadā ,
prahvamavyasanopetaṁ purastāddṛṣṭavikramam.
2. puṣṭam asmākam atyantam abhikāmam ca naḥ sadā
prahvam avyasanopetam purastāt dṛṣṭavikramam

2. This army of ours is extremely well-nourished, always desired by us, humble, free from misfortune, and whose valor has been witnessed before.
नातिवृद्धमबालं च न कृशं न च पीवरम् ।
लघुवृत्तायतप्रायं सारगात्रमनामयम् ॥३॥
3. nātivṛddhamabālaṁ ca na kṛśaṁ na ca pīvaram ,
laghuvṛttāyataprāyaṁ sāragātramanāmayam.

laghuvṛttāyataprāyam sāragātram anāmayam

3. Neither too old nor too young, neither too thin nor too stout; (this army is composed of soldiers who are) mostly quick and agile, with strong physiques, and free from disease.
आत्तसंनाहशस्त्रं च बहुशस्त्रपरिग्रहम् ।
असियुद्धे नियुद्धे च गदायुद्धे च कोविदम् ॥४॥
4. āttasaṁnāhaśastraṁ ca bahuśastraparigraham ,
asiyuddhe niyuddhe ca gadāyuddhe ca kovidam.

4. He is one who has assumed armor and weapons, possesses many types of weaponry, and is skilled in sword fighting, hand-to-hand combat, and mace fighting.
प्रासर्ष्टितोमरेष्वाजौ परिघेष्वायसेषु च ।
भिण्डिपालेषु शक्तीषु मुसलेषु च सर्वशः ॥५॥
5. prāsarṣṭitomareṣvājau parigheṣvāyaseṣu ca ,
bhiṇḍipāleṣu śaktīṣu musaleṣu ca sarvaśaḥ.

5. He is completely skilled in all types of spears (prāsa, ṛṣṭi, tomara), iron-bound clubs (parigha), short javelins (bhiṇḍipāla), lances (śakti), and maces (musala) in battle.
कम्पनेषु च चापेषु कणपेषु च सर्वशः ।
क्षेपणीषु च चित्रासु मुष्टियुद्धेषु कोविदम् ॥६॥
6. kampaneṣu ca cāpeṣu kaṇapeṣu ca sarvaśaḥ ,
kṣepaṇīṣu ca citrāsu muṣṭiyuddheṣu kovidam.

citrāsu kṣepaṇīṣu ca muṣṭiyuddheṣu kovidam
6. He is completely skilled in the use of quivering weapons (kampana), bows (cāpa), and short spears (kaṇapa); and he is an expert in diverse throwing weapons (kṣepaṇī) and fist fighting.
अपरोक्षं च विद्यासु व्यायामेषु कृतश्रमम् ।
शस्त्रग्रहणविद्यासु सर्वासु परिनिष्ठितम् ॥७॥
7. aparokṣaṁ ca vidyāsu vyāyāmeṣu kṛtaśramam ,
śastragrahaṇavidyāsu sarvāsu pariniṣṭhitam.

7. He has direct insight into various branches of knowledge (vidyā), has put forth great effort in physical exercises, and is perfectly accomplished in all the sciences of wielding weapons.
आरोहे पर्यवस्कन्दे सरणे सान्तरप्लुते ।
सम्यक्प्रहरणे याने व्यपयाने च कोविदम् ॥८॥

8. (He should be) expert in ascending, descending, swift movement, leaping over intervals, accurate striking, riding, and retreating.
नागाश्वरथयानेषु बहुशः सुपरीक्षितम् ।
परीक्ष्य च यथान्यायं वेतनेनोपपादितम् ॥९॥
9. nāgāśvarathayāneṣu bahuśaḥ suparīkṣitam ,
parīkṣya ca yathānyāyaṁ vetanenopapāditam.

parīkṣya ca yathānyāyaṃ vetanena upapāditam

9. (He should be) one who has been thoroughly tested many times in riding elephants, horses, and chariots, and who, having been duly examined, has been appointed with wages.
न गोष्ठ्या नोपचारेण न च बन्धुनिमित्ततः ।
न सौहृदबलैश्चापि नाकुलीनपरिग्रहैः ॥१०॥
10. na goṣṭhyā nopacāreṇa na ca bandhunimittataḥ ,
na sauhṛdabalaiścāpi nākulīnaparigrahaiḥ.
10. na goṣṭhyā na upacāreṇa na ca bandhunimittataḥ
na sauhṛdabalaiḥ ca api na akulīnaparigrahaiḥ
10. na goṣṭhyā na upacāreṇa ca na bandhunimittataḥ
na sauhṛdabalaiḥ ca api na akulīnaparigrahaiḥ
10. (He should not be chosen) by mere association, nor by courtesy, nor on account of relatives; nor by the influence of friendship, nor by accepting those of low lineage.
समृद्धजनमार्यं च तुष्टसत्कृतबान्धवम् ।
कृतोपकारभूयिष्ठं यशस्वि च मनस्वि च ॥११॥
11. samṛddhajanamāryaṁ ca tuṣṭasatkṛtabāndhavam ,
kṛtopakārabhūyiṣṭhaṁ yaśasvi ca manasvi ca.
11. samṛddhajanam āryam ca tuṣṭasatkṛtabāndhavam
kṛtopakārabhūyiṣṭham yaśasvi ca manasvi ca
11. samṛddhajanam āryam ca tuṣṭasatkṛtabāndhavam
kṛtopakārabhūyiṣṭham yaśasvi ca manasvi ca
11. (He should be) one who has made his people prosperous, is noble, whose relatives are content and honored, who has performed many benevolent deeds, is renowned, and high-minded.
सजयैश्च नरैर्मुख्यैर्बहुशो मुख्यकर्मभिः ।
लोकपालोपमैस्तात पालितं लोकविश्रुतैः ॥१२॥
12. sajayaiśca narairmukhyairbahuśo mukhyakarmabhiḥ ,
lokapālopamaistāta pālitaṁ lokaviśrutaiḥ.
12. sajayaiḥ ca naraiḥ mukhyaiḥ bahuśaḥ mukhyakarmabhiḥ
lokapālopamaiḥ tāta pālitam lokaviśrutaiḥ
12. tāta,
sajayaiḥ mukhyaiḥ mukhyakarmabhiḥ lokapālopamaiḥ lokaviśrutaiḥ ca bahuśaḥ naraiḥ pālitam
12. O dear one, it was often protected by numerous victorious, prominent men who performed important deeds, resembling the world-guardians (lokapālas) and renowned throughout the world.
बहुभिः क्षत्रियैर्गुप्तं पृथिव्यां लोकसंमतैः ।
अस्मानभिगतैः कामात्सबलैः सपदानुगैः ॥१३॥
13. bahubhiḥ kṣatriyairguptaṁ pṛthivyāṁ lokasaṁmataiḥ ,
asmānabhigataiḥ kāmātsabalaiḥ sapadānugaiḥ.
13. bahubhiḥ kṣatriyaiḥ guptam pṛthivyām lokasaṃmataih
asmān abhigataiḥ kāmāt sabalaiḥ sapadānugaiḥ
13. pṛthivyām lokasaṃmataiḥ sabalaiḥ sapadānugaiḥ
kāmāt asmān abhigataiḥ bahubhiḥ kṣatriyaiḥ guptam
13. It was protected by many Kṣatriyas (warriors) from all over the earth, who were esteemed by people, and who had willingly approached us with their troops and followers.
महोदधिमिवापूर्णमापगाभिः समन्ततः ।
अपक्षैः पक्षसंकाशै रथैर्नागैश्च संवृतम् ॥१४॥
14. mahodadhimivāpūrṇamāpagābhiḥ samantataḥ ,
apakṣaiḥ pakṣasaṁkāśai rathairnāgaiśca saṁvṛtam.
14. mahodadhim iva āpūrṇam āpagābhiḥ samantataḥ
apakṣaiḥ pakṣasaṃkāśaiḥ rathaiḥ nāgaiḥ ca saṃvṛtam
14. samantataḥ āpagābhiḥ mahodadhim iva āpūrṇam;
apakṣaiḥ pakṣasaṃkāśaiḥ rathaiḥ ca nāgaiḥ saṃvṛtam
14. It was filled, like a great ocean (mahodadhi) from all sides by rivers, and surrounded by chariots—wingless but resembling wings—and by elephants.
नानायोधजलं भीमं वाहनोर्मितरङ्गिणम् ।
क्षेपण्यसिगदाशक्तिशरप्राससमाकुलम् ॥१५॥
15. nānāyodhajalaṁ bhīmaṁ vāhanormitaraṅgiṇam ,
kṣepaṇyasigadāśaktiśaraprāsasamākulam.

15. It was formidable, with diverse warriors forming its waters and vehicles forming its surging waves; it was crowded with javelins, swords, maces, spears, arrows, and lances.
ध्वजभूषणसंबाधं रत्नपट्टेन संचितम् ।
वाहनैः परिसर्पद्भिर्वायुवेगविकम्पितम् ॥१६॥
16. dhvajabhūṣaṇasaṁbādhaṁ ratnapaṭṭena saṁcitam ,
vāhanaiḥ parisarpadbhirvāyuvegavikampitam.

16. It was crowded with banners and ornaments, adorned with jeweled cloths, and agitated by the speed of the wind as vehicles moved around.
अपारमिव गर्जन्तं सागरप्रतिमं महत् ।
द्रोणभीष्माभिसंगुप्तं गुप्तं च कृतवर्मणा ॥१७॥
17. apāramiva garjantaṁ sāgarapratimaṁ mahat ,
droṇabhīṣmābhisaṁguptaṁ guptaṁ ca kṛtavarmaṇā.

droṇabhīṣmābhisaṃguptam guptam ca kṛtavarmaṇā

17. It roared as if boundless, great and resembling an ocean, thoroughly protected by Droṇa and Bhīṣma, and also protected by Kṛtavarman.
कृपदुःशासनाभ्यां च जयद्रथमुखैस्तथा ।
भगदत्तविकर्णाभ्यां द्रौणिसौबलबाह्लिकैः ॥१८॥
18. kṛpaduḥśāsanābhyāṁ ca jayadrathamukhaistathā ,
bhagadattavikarṇābhyāṁ drauṇisaubalabāhlikaiḥ.

bhagadattavikarnābhyām drauṇisaubalabāhlikaiḥ

18. It was also protected by Kṛpa and Duḥśāsana, and similarly by those led by Jayadratha, by Bhagadatta and Vikarṇa, and by Drauṇi, Saubala, and Bāhlika.
गुप्तं प्रवीरैर्लोकस्य सारवद्भिर्महात्मभिः ।
यदहन्यत संग्रामे दिष्टमेतत्पुरातनम् ॥१९॥
19. guptaṁ pravīrairlokasya sāravadbhirmahātmabhiḥ ,
yadahanyata saṁgrāme diṣṭametatpurātanam.
19. guptam pravīraiḥ lokasya sāravadbhiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
yat ahanyata saṃgrāme diṣṭam etat purātanam
19. guptam pravīraiḥ lokasya sāravadbhiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
yat saṃgrāme ahanyata etat purātanam diṣṭam
19. It was protected by the world's most excellent, substantial, and great-souled warriors. That it was destroyed in battle was this ancient destiny.
नैतादृशं समुद्योगं दृष्टवन्तोऽथ मानुषाः ।
ऋषयो वा महाभागाः पुराणा भुवि संजय ॥२०॥
20. naitādṛśaṁ samudyogaṁ dṛṣṭavanto'tha mānuṣāḥ ,
ṛṣayo vā mahābhāgāḥ purāṇā bhuvi saṁjaya.
20. na etādṛśam samudyogam dṛṣṭavantaḥ atha mānuṣāḥ
ṛṣayaḥ vā mahābhāgāḥ purāṇāḥ bhuvi saṃjaya
20. saṃjaya na mānuṣāḥ vā purāṇāḥ mahābhāgāḥ ṛṣayaḥ
bhuvi etādṛśam samudyogam dṛṣṭavantaḥ atha
20. O Saṃjaya, neither ordinary humans nor the ancient, highly esteemed sages on this earth have ever witnessed such a colossal undertaking.
ईदृशो हि बलौघस्तु युक्तः शस्त्रास्त्रसंपदा ।
वध्यते यत्र संग्रामे किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥२१॥
21. īdṛśo hi balaughastu yuktaḥ śastrāstrasaṁpadā ,
vadhyate yatra saṁgrāme kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.
21. īdṛśaḥ hi balaughaḥ tu yuktaḥ śastrāstrasaṃpadā
vadhyate yatra saṃgrāme kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ
21. hi yatra saṃgrāme śastrāstrasaṃpadā yuktaḥ īdṛśaḥ
balaughaḥ tu vadhyate anyat kim bhāgadheyataḥ
21. Indeed, when such an army, fully equipped with a wealth of weapons and missiles, is nevertheless defeated in battle, what else can it be but a matter of destiny?
विपरीतमिदं सर्वं प्रतिभाति स्म संजय ।
यत्रेदृशं बलं घोरं नातरद्युधि पाण्डवान् ॥२२॥
22. viparītamidaṁ sarvaṁ pratibhāti sma saṁjaya ,
yatredṛśaṁ balaṁ ghoraṁ nātaradyudhi pāṇḍavān.
22. viparītam idam sarvam pratibhāti sma saṃjaya
yatra īdṛśam balam ghoram na atarat yudhi pāṇḍavān
22. saṃjaya idam sarvam viparītam pratibhāti sma
yatra īdṛśam ghoram balam yudhi pāṇḍavān na atarat
22. O Saṃjaya, all this appears contrary to expectation, where such a terrible army could not overcome the Pāṇḍavas in battle.
अथ वा पाण्डवार्थाय देवास्तत्र समागताः ।
युध्यन्ते मामकं सैन्यं यदवध्यन्त संजय ॥२३॥
23. atha vā pāṇḍavārthāya devāstatra samāgatāḥ ,
yudhyante māmakaṁ sainyaṁ yadavadhyanta saṁjaya.
23. atha vā pāṇḍavārthāya devāḥ tatra samāgatāḥ
yudhyante māmakam sainyam yat avadhyanta saṃjaya
23. saṃjaya atha vā devāḥ tatra pāṇḍavārthāya
samāgatāḥ māmakam sainyam yudhyante yat avadhyanta
23. Or else, O Saṃjaya, perhaps the gods have assembled there for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas, and they are fighting my army, on account of which my forces were slain.
उक्तो हि विदुरेणेह हितं पथ्यं च संजय ।
न च गृह्णाति तन्मन्दः पुत्रो दुर्योधनो मम ॥२४॥
24. ukto hi vidureṇeha hitaṁ pathyaṁ ca saṁjaya ,
na ca gṛhṇāti tanmandaḥ putro duryodhano mama.
24. uktaḥ hi vidureṇa iha hitam pathyam ca sañjaya
na ca gṛhṇāti tat mandaḥ putraḥ duryodhanaḥ mama
24. sañjaya iha vidureṇa hitam ca pathyam hi uktaḥ
mama mandaḥ putraḥ duryodhanaḥ ca tat na gṛhṇāti
24. Indeed, beneficial and wholesome advice was given here by Vidura, O Sañjaya; but my foolish son Duryodhana does not accept that.
तस्य मन्ये मतिः पूर्वं सर्वज्ञस्य महात्मनः ।
आसीद्यथागतं तात येन दृष्टमिदं पुरा ॥२५॥
25. tasya manye matiḥ pūrvaṁ sarvajñasya mahātmanaḥ ,
āsīdyathāgataṁ tāta yena dṛṣṭamidaṁ purā.
25. tasya manye matiḥ pūrvam sarvajñasya mahātmanaḥ
āsīt yathāgatam tāta yena dṛṣṭam idam purā
25. tāta manye pūrvam sarvajñasya mahātmanaḥ tasya
matiḥ āsīt yena idam purā dṛṣṭam yathāgatam
25. O dear one, I believe the intellect of that omniscient (sarvajña), great soul (mahātman), by whom this was seen before, was just as it had come to him (i.e., divinely revealed).
अथ वा भाव्यमेवं हि संजयैतेन सर्वथा ।
पुरा धात्रा यथा सृष्टं तत्तथा न तदन्यथा ॥२६॥
26. atha vā bhāvyamevaṁ hi saṁjayaitena sarvathā ,
purā dhātrā yathā sṛṣṭaṁ tattathā na tadanyathā.
26. atha vā bhāvyam evam hi sañjaya etena sarvathā
purā dhātrā yathā sṛṣṭam tat tathā na tat anyathā
26. sañjaya atha vā etena hi evam sarvathā bhāvyam
purā dhātrā yathā sṛṣṭam tat tathā na tat anyathā
26. Or rather, O Sañjaya, this must indeed happen in this way, in every respect, by this (destiny). As it was created before by the Ordainer (dhātṛ), so it is; it cannot be otherwise.
