लोमश उवाच ।
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु बृहद्द्युम्नो महीपतिः ।
सत्रमास्ते महाभागो रैभ्ययाज्यः प्रतापवान् ॥१॥

etasminneva kāle tu bṛhaddyumno mahīpatiḥ ,
satramāste mahābhāgo raibhyayājyaḥ pratāpavān.

1. Lomasha said: "Indeed, at this very time, the glorious and mighty King Brihaddyumna, for whom Raibhya serves as the officiating priest, is performing a great sacrifice (satra)."
तेन रैभ्यस्य वै पुत्रावर्वावसुपरावसू ।
वृतौ सहायौ सत्रार्थे बृहद्द्युम्नेन धीमता ॥२॥
2. tena raibhyasya vai putrāvarvāvasuparāvasū ,
vṛtau sahāyau satrārthe bṛhaddyumnena dhīmatā.

2. Indeed, by that intelligent Brihaddyumna, Raibhya's two sons, Arvāvasu and Parāvasu, were appointed as assistants for the purpose of the great sacrifice (satra).
तत्र तौ समनुज्ञातौ पित्रा कौन्तेय जग्मतुः ।
आश्रमे त्वभवद्रैभ्यो भार्या चैव परावसोः ॥३॥
3. tatra tau samanujñātau pitrā kaunteya jagmatuḥ ,
āśrame tvabhavadraibhyo bhāryā caiva parāvasoḥ.
3. tatra tau samanuñjñātau pitrā kaunteya jagmatuḥ
āśrame tu abhavat raibhyaḥ bhāryā ca eva parāvasoḥ
3. "O son of Kunti, having received permission from their father, those two (Arvāvasu and Parāvasu) then went there. But Raibhya and Parāvasu's wife indeed remained in the hermitage (āśrama)."
अथावलोककोऽगच्छद्गृहानेकः परावसुः ।
कृष्णाजिनेन संवीतं ददर्श पितरं वने ॥४॥
4. athāvalokako'gacchadgṛhānekaḥ parāvasuḥ ,
kṛṣṇājinena saṁvītaṁ dadarśa pitaraṁ vane.
4. atha avalokakaḥ agacchat gṛhāt ekaḥ parāvasuḥ
kṛṣṇājinena saṃvītam dadarśa pitaram vane
4. Then Parāvasu, going alone from his home as a seeker, saw his father in the forest, covered with a black antelope skin.
जघन्यरात्रे निद्रान्धः सावशेषे तमस्यपि ।
चरन्तं गहनेऽरण्ये मेने स पितरं मृगम् ॥५॥
5. jaghanyarātre nidrāndhaḥ sāvaśeṣe tamasyapi ,
carantaṁ gahane'raṇye mene sa pitaraṁ mṛgam.
5. jaghanyarātre nidrāndhaḥ sāvaśeṣe tamasi api
carantam gahane araṇye mene saḥ pitaram mṛgam
5. In the last part of the night, with some darkness still remaining, he (Parāvasu), blinded by sleep, mistook his father, who was moving in the dense forest, for a deer.
मृगं तु मन्यमानेन पिता वै तेन हिंसितः ।
अकामयानेन तदा शरीरत्राणमिच्छता ॥६॥
6. mṛgaṁ tu manyamānena pitā vai tena hiṁsitaḥ ,
akāmayānena tadā śarīratrāṇamicchatā.
6. mṛgam tu manyamānena pitā vai tena hiṃsitaḥ
akāmayānena tadā śarīratrāṇam icchatā
6. But indeed, his father was killed by him (Parāvasu) at that time, who mistook him for a deer and did not desire (to kill him), but merely wished for his own self-preservation.
स तस्य प्रेतकार्याणि कृत्वा सर्वाणि भारत ।
पुनरागम्य तत्सत्रमब्रवीद्भ्रातरं वचः ॥७॥
7. sa tasya pretakāryāṇi kṛtvā sarvāṇi bhārata ,
punarāgamya tatsatramabravīdbhrātaraṁ vacaḥ.
7. saḥ tasya pretakāryāṇi kṛtvā sarvāṇi bhārata
punar āgamya tat satram abravīt bhrātaram vacaḥ
7. O Bhārata, having performed all of his father's funeral rites, he (Parāvasu) returned to that sacrificial session (satra) and spoke these words to his brother.
इदं कर्म न शक्तस्त्वं वोढुमेकः कथंचन ।
मया तु हिंसितस्तातो मन्यमानेन तं मृगम् ॥८॥
8. idaṁ karma na śaktastvaṁ voḍhumekaḥ kathaṁcana ,
mayā tu hiṁsitastāto manyamānena taṁ mṛgam.
8. idam karma na śaktaḥ tvam voḍhum ekaḥ kathaṃcana
mayā tu hiṃsitaḥ tātaḥ manyamānena tam mṛgam
8. You alone are certainly not able to bear this deed by any means. But it was I who killed the father, having mistaken him for that deer.
सोऽस्मदर्थे व्रतं साधु चर त्वं ब्रह्महिंसनम् ।
समर्थो ह्यहमेकाकी कर्म कर्तुमिदं मुने ॥९॥
9. so'smadarthe vrataṁ sādhu cara tvaṁ brahmahiṁsanam ,
samartho hyahamekākī karma kartumidaṁ mune.
9. saḥ asmadarthe vratam sādhu cara tvam brahmahiṃsanam
samarthaḥ hi aham ekākī karma kartum idam mune
9. Therefore, O sage, for our sake, you should properly undertake the vow (vrata) related to the killing of a Brahmin. For I alone am capable of performing this ritual (karma).
अर्वावसुरुवाच ।
करोतु वै भवान्सत्रं बृहद्द्युम्नस्य धीमतः ।
ब्रह्महत्यां चरिष्येऽहं त्वदर्थं नियतेन्द्रियः ॥१०॥
10. arvāvasuruvāca ,
karotu vai bhavānsatraṁ bṛhaddyumnasya dhīmataḥ ,
brahmahatyāṁ cariṣye'haṁ tvadarthaṁ niyatendriyaḥ.
10. arvāvasuḥ uvāca karotu vai bhavān satram bṛhaddyumnasya
dhīmataḥ brahmahatyām cariṣye aham tvadartham niyatendriyaḥ
10. Arvāvasu said: 'Your honor should indeed perform the sacrificial session (satra) for the wise Bṛhaddyumna. I, with my senses controlled, shall perform the penance for the killing of a Brahmin (brahmahatyā) for your sake.'
लोमश उवाच ।
स तस्या ब्रह्महत्यायाः पारं गत्वा युधिष्ठिर ।
अर्वावसुस्तदा सत्रमाजगाम पुनर्मुनिः ॥११॥
11. lomaśa uvāca ,
sa tasyā brahmahatyāyāḥ pāraṁ gatvā yudhiṣṭhira ,
arvāvasustadā satramājagāma punarmuniḥ.
11. lomaśaḥ uvāca saḥ tasyāḥ brahmahatyāyāḥ pāram gatvā
yudhiṣṭhira arvāvasuḥ tadā satram ājagāma punar muniḥ
11. Lomaśa said: 'O Yudhiṣṭhira, having reached the other side (i.e., completed) of that expiation for the killing of a Brahmin (brahmahatyā), the sage Arvāvasu then returned to the sacrificial session (satra).'
ततः परावसुर्दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरं समुपस्थितम् ।
बृहद्द्युम्नमुवाचेदं वचनं परिषद्गतम् ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ parāvasurdṛṣṭvā bhrātaraṁ samupasthitam ,
bṛhaddyumnamuvācedaṁ vacanaṁ pariṣadgatam.
12. tataḥ parāvasuḥ dṛṣṭvā bhrātaram samupasthitam
bṛhaddyumnam uvāca idam vacanam pariṣadgatam
12. Then Paravasu, seeing his brother present, addressed Bṛhaddyumna in the assembly with these words.
एष ते ब्रह्महा यज्ञं मा द्रष्टुं प्रविशेदिति ।
ब्रह्महा प्रेक्षितेनापि पीडयेत्त्वां न संशयः ॥१३॥
13. eṣa te brahmahā yajñaṁ mā draṣṭuṁ praviśediti ,
brahmahā prekṣitenāpi pīḍayettvāṁ na saṁśayaḥ.
13. eṣaḥ te brahmahā yajñam mā draṣṭum praviśet iti |
brahmahā prekṣitenā api pīḍayet tvām na saṃśayaḥ
13. eṣaḥ brahmahā te yajñam draṣṭum mā praviśet iti brahmahā prekṣitenā api tvām pīḍayet,
na saṃśayaḥ
13. Let this killer of a Brahmin not enter to witness your Vedic ritual (yajña). A killer of a Brahmin would distress you even by his mere gaze; there is no doubt about this.
प्रेष्यैरुत्सार्यमाणस्तु राजन्नर्वावसुस्तदा ।
न मया ब्रह्महत्येयं कृतेत्याह पुनः पुनः ॥१४॥
14. preṣyairutsāryamāṇastu rājannarvāvasustadā ,
na mayā brahmahatyeyaṁ kṛtetyāha punaḥ punaḥ.
14. preṣyaiḥ utsāryamāṇaḥ tu rājan arvāvasuḥ tadā na
mayā brahmahatyā iyam kṛtā iti āha punaḥ punaḥ
14. But then, O King, as Arvāvasu was being driven away by the servants, he repeatedly said, 'This act of brahmanicide was not committed by me!'
उच्यमानोऽसकृत्प्रेष्यैर्ब्रह्महन्निति भारत ।
नैव स प्रतिजानाति ब्रह्महत्यां स्वयं कृताम् ।
मम भ्रात्रा कृतमिदं मया तु परिरक्षितम् ॥१५॥
15. ucyamāno'sakṛtpreṣyairbrahmahanniti bhārata ,
naiva sa pratijānāti brahmahatyāṁ svayaṁ kṛtām ,
mama bhrātrā kṛtamidaṁ mayā tu parirakṣitam.
15. ucyamānaḥ asakṛt preṣyaiḥ brahmahan
iti bhārata na eva saḥ pratijānāti
brahmahatyām svayam kṛtām mama
bhrātrā kṛtam idam mayā tu parirakṣitam
15. O Bhārata, though repeatedly called 'O killer of a brahmin (brahmahan)' by the servants, he certainly did not acknowledge the brahmanicide as committed by himself. [Instead, he stated:] 'This was done by my brother, but I shielded him.'
प्रीतास्तस्याभवन्देवाः कर्मणार्वावसोर्नृप ।
तं ते प्रवरयामासुर्निरासुश्च परावसुम् ॥१६॥
16. prītāstasyābhavandevāḥ karmaṇārvāvasornṛpa ,
taṁ te pravarayāmāsurnirāsuśca parāvasum.
16. prītāḥ tasya abhavan devāḥ karmaṇā arvāvasoḥ
nṛpa tam te pravarayāmāsuḥ nirāsuḥ ca parāvasum
16. O king, the gods were pleased by the deed (karma) of Arvāvasu. They esteemed him and rejected Parāvasu.
ततो देवा वरं तस्मै ददुरग्निपुरोगमाः ।
स चापि वरयामास पितुरुत्थानमात्मनः ॥१७॥
17. tato devā varaṁ tasmai daduragnipurogamāḥ ,
sa cāpi varayāmāsa piturutthānamātmanaḥ.
17. tataḥ devāḥ varam tasmai daduḥ agnipurūgamāḥ
saḥ ca api varayāmāsa pituḥ utthānam ātmanaḥ
17. Thereupon, the gods, with Agni at their forefront, granted a boon to him. And he (Arvāvasu) in turn requested the resurrection of his own father.
अनागस्त्वं तथा भ्रातुः पितुश्चास्मरणं वधे ।
भरद्वाजस्य चोत्थानं यवक्रीतस्य चोभयोः ॥१८॥
18. anāgastvaṁ tathā bhrātuḥ pituścāsmaraṇaṁ vadhe ,
bharadvājasya cotthānaṁ yavakrītasya cobhayoḥ.
18. anāgastvam tathā bhrātuḥ pituḥ ca asmaraṇam vadhe
bharadvājasya ca utthānam yavakrītasya ca ubhayoḥ
18. (He also requested) the blamelessness of his brother, and the forgetting of his father's murder, as well as the resurrection of both Bharadvāja and Yavakrīta.
ततः प्रादुर्बभूवुस्ते सर्व एव युधिष्ठिर ।
अथाब्रवीद्यवक्रीतो देवानग्निपुरोगमान् ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ prādurbabhūvuste sarva eva yudhiṣṭhira ,
athābravīdyavakrīto devānagnipurogamān.
19. tataḥ prādurbabhūvuḥ te sarve eva yudhiṣṭhira
atha abravīt yavakrītaḥ devān agnipurūgamān
19. Thereupon, O Yudhiṣṭhira, they all indeed manifested. Then Yavakrīta spoke to the gods, who had Agni as their foremost (leader).
समधीतं मया ब्रह्म व्रतानि चरितानि च ।
कथं नु रैभ्यः शक्तो मामधीयानं तपस्विनम् ।
तथायुक्तेन विधिना निहन्तुममरोत्तमाः ॥२०॥
20. samadhītaṁ mayā brahma vratāni caritāni ca ,
kathaṁ nu raibhyaḥ śakto māmadhīyānaṁ tapasvinam ,
tathāyuktena vidhinā nihantumamarottamāḥ.
20. samadhītam mayā brahma vratāni
caritāni ca katham nu raibhyaḥ śaktaḥ
mām adhīyānam tapasvinam
tathāyuktena vidhinā nihantum amarottamāḥ
20. I have thoroughly studied the Vedas (brahman) and observed my vows. How then, O best of immortals, can Raibhya possibly kill me, who am engaged in study and austerities, using such a method?
देवा ऊचुः ।
मैवं कृथा यवक्रीत यथा वदसि वै मुने ।
ऋते गुरुमधीता हि सुखं वेदास्त्वया पुरा ॥२१॥
21. devā ūcuḥ ,
maivaṁ kṛthā yavakrīta yathā vadasi vai mune ,
ṛte gurumadhītā hi sukhaṁ vedāstvayā purā.
21. devāḥ ūcuḥ mā evam kṛthāḥ yavakrīta yathā vadasi vai
mune ṛte gurum adhītāḥ hi sukham vedāḥ tvayā purā
21. The gods said: "O Yavakrīta, do not act in this manner, as you speak, O sage. For indeed, you previously studied the Vedas easily without a preceptor (guru)."
अनेन तु गुरून्दुःखात्तोषयित्वा स्वकर्मणा ।
कालेन महता क्लेशाद्ब्रह्माधिगतमुत्तमम् ॥२२॥
22. anena tu gurūnduḥkhāttoṣayitvā svakarmaṇā ,
kālena mahatā kleśādbrahmādhigatamuttamam.
22. anena tu gurūn duḥkhāt toṣayitvā svakarmaṇā
kālena mahatā kleśāt brahma adhigatam uttamam
22. However, through his own actions (karma), having satisfied his preceptors (guru) who were in distress, the supreme knowledge (brahman) was attained by him with great difficulty over a long period.
लोमश उवाच ।
यवक्रीतमथोक्त्वैवं देवाः साग्निपुरोगमाः ।
संजीवयित्वा तान्सर्वान्पुनर्जग्मुस्त्रिविष्टपम् ॥२३॥
23. lomaśa uvāca ,
yavakrītamathoktvaivaṁ devāḥ sāgnipurogamāḥ ,
saṁjīvayitvā tānsarvānpunarjagmustriviṣṭapam.
23. lomaśaḥ uvāca yavakrītam atha uktvā evam devāḥ sāgnipuraḥgamāḥ
sañjīvayitvā tān sarvān punaḥ jagmuḥ triviṣṭapam
23. Lomasa said: "After speaking thus to Yavakrīta, the gods, led by Agni, revived all of them and then returned to heaven."
आश्रमस्तस्य पुण्योऽयं सदापुष्पफलद्रुमः ।
अत्रोष्य राजशार्दूल सर्वपापैः प्रमोक्ष्यसे ॥२४॥
24. āśramastasya puṇyo'yaṁ sadāpuṣpaphaladrumaḥ ,
atroṣya rājaśārdūla sarvapāpaiḥ pramokṣyase.
24. āśramaḥ tasya puṇyaḥ ayam sadāpuṣpaphaladrumaḥ
atra uṣya rājaśārdūla sarvapāpaiḥ pramokṣyase
24. This sacred hermitage (āśrama) of his is always adorned with trees bearing flowers and fruits. By residing here, O best of kings, you will be freed from all sins.
