Sañjaya said: Seeing him who had arrived and was performing terrible deeds in battle, all those very Kurus felt joy.

Just so, your sons, headed by Duryodhana, were like those who, though without a boat, obtained one and desired to cross the ocean.

Then, those kings (pārthivāḥ), considering themselves as if reborn (ātman), honored Alayudha, the chief of the rākṣasas, with a warm welcome.

This Karna, the son of Vikartana, has encountered Ghatotkacha, the son of Hiḍimbā. He is performing a very significant act, one that is fitting for him in this battle.

Behold these heroic kings, slain by Bhimasena (Bhīma), who lie struck by various weapons, just like trees felled by an elephant.

Indeed, this wicked Ghatotkaca, the tormentor of enemies, relying on his power of illusion (māyā), is tormenting Karna, the son of Vikartana.

Having been addressed thus by the king, that mighty-armed demon (rākṣasa) of fierce valor, saying 'So be it,' rushed towards Ghatotkaca.
