युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
मया गवां पुरीषं वै श्रिया जुष्टमिति श्रुतम् ।
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं संशयोऽत्र हि मे महान् ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
mayā gavāṁ purīṣaṁ vai śriyā juṣṭamiti śrutam ,
etadicchāmyahaṁ śrotuṁ saṁśayo'tra hi me mahān.

1. Yudhiṣṭhira said, "I have heard that cow dung is indeed associated with fortune (śrī). I wish to understand this, for I have a great doubt regarding it."
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
गोभिर्नृपेह संवादं श्रिया भरतसत्तम ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
gobhirnṛpeha saṁvādaṁ śriyā bharatasattama.
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam
purātanam gobhiḥ nṛpa iha saṃvādam śriyā bharatasattama
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca atra api (he) udāharanti imam purātanam
itihāsam gobhiḥ śriyā saṃvādam nṛpa bharatasattama
2. Bhīṣma said, "In this context, O King, best of the Bharatas, people relate this ancient narrative (itihāsa), a dialogue between the cows and fortune (śrī)."
श्रीः कृत्वेह वपुः कान्तं गोमध्यं प्रविवेश ह ।
गावोऽथ विस्मितास्तस्या दृष्ट्वा रूपस्य संपदम् ॥३॥
3. śrīḥ kṛtveha vapuḥ kāntaṁ gomadhyaṁ praviveśa ha ,
gāvo'tha vismitāstasyā dṛṣṭvā rūpasya saṁpadam.
3. śrīḥ kṛtvā iha vapuḥ kāntam gomadhyam praviveśa ha
gāvaḥ atha vismitāḥ tasyāḥ dṛṣṭvā rūpasya sampadam
3. śrīḥ iha kāntam vapuḥ kṛtvā gomadhyam praviveśa ha
atha gāvaḥ tasyāḥ rūpasya sampadam dṛṣṭvā vismitāḥ
3. Indeed, fortune (śrī) assumed a lovely form and entered the midst of the cows. The cows, beholding the splendor of her beauty, were then astonished.
गाव ऊचुः ।
कासि देवि कुतो वा त्वं रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि ।
विस्मिताः स्म महाभागे तव रूपस्य संपदा ॥४॥
4. gāva ūcuḥ ,
kāsi devi kuto vā tvaṁ rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi ,
vismitāḥ sma mahābhāge tava rūpasya saṁpadā.
4. gāvaḥ ūcuḥ kā asi devi kutaḥ vā tvam rūpeṇa apratimā
bhuvi vismitāḥ sma mahābhāge tava rūpasya sampadā
4. gāvaḥ ūcuḥ devi kā asi vā tvam kutaḥ rūpeṇa bhuvi apratimā
mahābhāge (vayam) vismitāḥ sma tava rūpasya sampadā
4. The cows asked, "Who are you, O goddess, and from where do you come? Your form is unequaled on earth. O greatly fortunate one, we are utterly astonished by the splendor of your beauty."
इच्छामस्त्वां वयं ज्ञातुं का त्वं क्व च गमिष्यसि ।
तत्त्वेन च सुवर्णाभे सर्वमेतद्ब्रवीहि नः ॥५॥
5. icchāmastvāṁ vayaṁ jñātuṁ kā tvaṁ kva ca gamiṣyasi ,
tattvena ca suvarṇābhe sarvametadbravīhi naḥ.
5. icchāmaḥ tvām vayam jñātum kā tvam kva ca gamiṣyasi
tattvena ca suvarṇābhe sarvam etat bravīhi naḥ
5. vayam tvām jñātum icchāmaḥ tvam kā ca kva gamiṣyasi
suvarṇābhe ca etat sarvam tattvena naḥ bravīhi
5. We wish to know you. Who are you, and where will you go? O golden-hued one, tell us all this in truth.
श्रीरुवाच ।
लोककान्तास्मि भद्रं वः श्रीर्नाम्नेह परिश्रुता ।
मया दैत्याः परित्यक्ता विनष्टाः शाश्वतीः समाः ॥६॥
6. śrīruvāca ,
lokakāntāsmi bhadraṁ vaḥ śrīrnāmneha pariśrutā ,
mayā daityāḥ parityaktā vinaṣṭāḥ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ.
6. śrīḥ uvāca lokakāntā asmi bhadram vaḥ śrīḥ nāmnā iha
pariśrutā mayā daityāḥ parityaktā vinaṣṭāḥ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ
6. śrīḥ uvāca asmi lokakāntā vaḥ bhadram śrīḥ nāmnā iha
pariśrutā mayā daityāḥ parityaktā ca śāśvatīḥ samāḥ vinaṣṭāḥ
6. Śrī spoke: 'I am the beloved of the world, and I am known here by the name of Śrī. May good fortune be with you! It is by me that the daityas (demons) were abandoned, and they perished for countless ages.'
इन्द्रो विवस्वान्सोमश्च विष्णुरापोऽग्निरेव च ।
मयाभिपन्ना ऋध्यन्ते ऋषयो देवतास्तथा ॥७॥
7. indro vivasvānsomaśca viṣṇurāpo'gnireva ca ,
mayābhipannā ṛdhyante ṛṣayo devatāstathā.
7. indraḥ vivasvān somaḥ ca viṣṇuḥ āpaḥ agniḥ eva
ca mayā abhipannāḥ ṛdhyante ṛṣayaḥ devatāḥ tathā
7. indraḥ vivasvān somaḥ ca viṣṇuḥ āpaḥ agniḥ eva
ca mayā abhipannāḥ ṛṣayaḥ devatāḥ tathā ṛdhyante
7. Indra, Vivasvān, Soma, Viṣṇu, the Waters, and Agni – these, having been approached by me, prosper, as do the sages (ṛṣi) and the deities (devatā).
यांश्च द्विषाम्यहं गावस्ते विनश्यन्ति सर्वशः ।
धर्मार्थकामहीनाश्च ते भवन्त्यसुखान्विताः ॥८॥
8. yāṁśca dviṣāmyahaṁ gāvaste vinaśyanti sarvaśaḥ ,
dharmārthakāmahīnāśca te bhavantyasukhānvitāḥ.
8. yān ca dviṣāmi aham gāvaḥ te vinaśyanti sarvaśaḥ
dharmārthakāmahīnāḥ ca te bhavanti asukhānvitāḥ
8. aham yān gāvaḥ ca dviṣāmi te sarvaśaḥ vinaśyanti
ca te dharmārthakāmahīnāḥ asukhānvitāḥ bhavanti
8. Those whom I despise completely perish. Deprived of their intrinsic nature (dharma), wealth, and rightful desires (kāma), they become afflicted with unhappiness.
एवंप्रभावां मां गावो विजानीत सुखप्रदाम् ।
इच्छामि चापि युष्मासु वस्तुं सर्वासु नित्यदा ।
आगता प्रार्थयानाहं श्रीजुष्टा भवतानघाः ॥९॥
9. evaṁprabhāvāṁ māṁ gāvo vijānīta sukhapradām ,
icchāmi cāpi yuṣmāsu vastuṁ sarvāsu nityadā ,
āgatā prārthayānāhaṁ śrījuṣṭā bhavatānaghāḥ.
9. evamprabhāvām mām gāvaḥ vijānīta
sukhapradām icchāmi ca api yuṣmāsu
vastum sarvāsu nityadā āgatā
prārthayānā aham śrījuṣṭā bhavata anaghāḥ
9. gāvaḥ evamprabhāvām sukhapradām mām
vijānīta ca api aham yuṣmāsu
sarvāsu nityadā vastum icchāmi āgatā
prārthayānā śrījuṣṭā anaghāḥ bhavata
9. O cows, know me, who possesses such glory and bestows happiness. I also desire to dwell among all of you always. I have come imploring, endowed with splendor (śrī); may you become blameless.
गाव ऊचुः ।
अध्रुवां चञ्चलां च त्वां सामान्यां बहुभिः सह ।
न त्वामिच्छामि भद्रं ते गम्यतां यत्र रोचते ॥१०॥
10. gāva ūcuḥ ,
adhruvāṁ cañcalāṁ ca tvāṁ sāmānyāṁ bahubhiḥ saha ,
na tvāmicchāmi bhadraṁ te gamyatāṁ yatra rocate.
10. gāvaḥ ūcuḥ adhruvām cañcalām ca tvām sāmānyām bahubhiḥ
saha na tvām icchāmi bhadram te gamyatām yatra rocate
10. gāvaḥ ūcuḥ adhruvām cañcalām ca bahubhiḥ saha sāmānyām
tvām na icchāmi te bhadram yatra rocate gamyatām
10. The cows said: 'We do not desire you, who are inconstant, fickle, and common to many. May you fare well; go wherever you please.'
वपुष्मन्त्यो वयं सर्वाः किमस्माकं त्वयाद्य वै ।
यत्रेष्टं गम्यतां तत्र कृतकार्या वयं त्वया ॥११॥
11. vapuṣmantyo vayaṁ sarvāḥ kimasmākaṁ tvayādya vai ,
yatreṣṭaṁ gamyatāṁ tatra kṛtakāryā vayaṁ tvayā.
11. vapuṣmantyaḥ vayam sarvāḥ kim asmākam tvayā adya
vai yatra iṣṭam gamyatām kṛtakāryāḥ vayam tvayā
11. sarvāḥ vayam vapuṣmantyaḥ adya vai asmākam tvayā
kim yatra iṣṭam gamyatām vayam tvayā kṛtakāryāḥ
11. We are all radiant; what use are you to us today? Go wherever is wished. Our purpose with you is fulfilled.
श्रीरुवाच ।
किमेतद्वः क्षमं गावो यन्मां नेहाभ्यनन्दथ ।
न मां संप्रति गृह्णीथ कस्माद्वै दुर्लभां सतीम् ॥१२॥
12. śrīruvāca ,
kimetadvaḥ kṣamaṁ gāvo yanmāṁ nehābhyanandatha ,
na māṁ saṁprati gṛhṇītha kasmādvai durlabhāṁ satīm.
12. śrīḥ uvāca kim etat vaḥ kṣamam gāvaḥ yat mām na iha
abhyanandatha na mām samprati gṛhṇītha kasmāt vai durlabhām satīm
12. śrīḥ uvāca gāvaḥ etat vaḥ kṣamam kim yat iha mām na
abhyanandatha vai kasmāt samprati durlabhām satīm mām na gṛhṇītha
12. Śrī said: 'O cows, is this proper for you, that you did not welcome me here? Why indeed do you not accept me now, me who am rare and truly existing (satī)?'
सत्यश्च लोकवादोऽयं लोके चरति सुव्रताः ।
स्वयं प्राप्ते परिभवो भवतीति विनिश्चयः ॥१३॥
13. satyaśca lokavādo'yaṁ loke carati suvratāḥ ,
svayaṁ prāpte paribhavo bhavatīti viniścayaḥ.
13. satyaḥ ca lokavādaḥ ayam loke carati suvratāḥ
svayam prāpte paribhavaḥ bhavati iti viniścayaḥ
13. suvratāḥ ayam satyaḥ lokavādaḥ loke carati
svayam prāpte paribhavaḥ bhavati iti viniścayaḥ
13. O virtuous ones, this common saying is indeed current in the world: 'When humiliation comes upon oneself, it is a certainty.'
महदुग्रं तपः कृत्वा मां निषेवन्ति मानवाः ।
देवदानवगन्धर्वाः पिशाचोरगराक्षसाः ॥१४॥
14. mahadugraṁ tapaḥ kṛtvā māṁ niṣevanti mānavāḥ ,
devadānavagandharvāḥ piśācoragarākṣasāḥ.
14. mahat ugram tapaḥ kṛtvā mām niṣevanti mānavāḥ
devadānavagandharvāḥ piśācoragarākṣasāḥ
14. mānavāḥ mahat ugram tapaḥ kṛtvā mām niṣevanti
devadānavagandharvāḥ piśācoragarākṣasāḥ
14. Human beings, having performed great and severe austerities (tapas), worship me. Likewise, gods, demons, celestial musicians (gandharvas), spirits, serpents, and ogres (rakṣasas also serve me).
क्षममेतद्धि वो गावः प्रतिगृह्णीत मामिह ।
नावमन्या ह्यहं सौम्यास्त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे ॥१५॥
15. kṣamametaddhi vo gāvaḥ pratigṛhṇīta māmiha ,
nāvamanyā hyahaṁ saumyāstrailokye sacarācare.
15. kṣamam etat hi vaḥ gāvaḥ pratigṛhṇīta mām iha na
avamanyā hi aham saumyāḥ trailokye sacarācare
15. gāvaḥ iha mām pratigṛhṇīta hi etat vaḥ kṣamam hi
saumyāḥ aham sacarācare trailokye na avamanyā
15. O cows, indeed accept me here; this is suitable for you. For I, O gentle ones, am not to be disrespected in the three worlds, comprising all moving and unmoving beings.
गाव ऊचुः ।
नावमन्यामहे देवि न त्वां परिभवामहे ।
अध्रुवा चलचित्तासि ततस्त्वां वर्जयामहे ॥१६॥
16. gāva ūcuḥ ,
nāvamanyāmahe devi na tvāṁ paribhavāmahe ,
adhruvā calacittāsi tatastvāṁ varjayāmahe.
16. gāvaḥ ūcuḥ na avamanyāmahe devi na tvām paribhavāmahe
adhruvā calacittā asi tataḥ tvām varjayāmahe
16. gāvaḥ ūcuḥ devi tvām na avamanyāmahe na tvām
paribhavāmahe adhruvā calacittā asi tataḥ tvām varjayāmahe
16. The cows said: 'O goddess, we do not disrespect you, nor do we insult you. You are impermanent and fickle-minded; therefore, we avoid you.'
बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन गम्यतां यत्र वाञ्छसि ।
वपुष्मत्यो वयं सर्वाः किमस्माकं त्वयानघे ॥१७॥
17. bahunātra kimuktena gamyatāṁ yatra vāñchasi ,
vapuṣmatyo vayaṁ sarvāḥ kimasmākaṁ tvayānaghe.
17. bahunā atra kim uktena gamyatām yatra vāñchasi
vapuṣmatyaḥ vayam sarvāḥ kim asmākam tvayā anaghe
17. atra bahunā uktena kim gamyatām yatra vāñchasi
anaghe vayam sarvāḥ vapuṣmatyaḥ tvayā asmākam kim
17. What more needs to be said here? Go wherever you wish. We are all embodied; what concern do you have with us, O sinless one?
श्रीरुवाच ।
अवज्ञाता भविष्यामि सर्वलोकेषु मानदाः ।
प्रत्याख्यानेन युष्माभिः प्रसादः क्रियतामिति ॥१८॥
18. śrīruvāca ,
avajñātā bhaviṣyāmi sarvalokeṣu mānadāḥ ,
pratyākhyānena yuṣmābhiḥ prasādaḥ kriyatāmiti.
18. śrīḥ uvāca avajñātā bhaviṣyāmi sarvalokeṣu mānadāḥ
pratyākhyānena yuṣmābhiḥ prasādaḥ kriyatām iti
18. śrīḥ uvāca mānadāḥ sarvalokeṣu avajñātā bhaviṣyāmi
yuṣmābhiḥ pratyākhyānena prasādaḥ kriyatām iti
18. Śrī said: "O givers of honor, I shall be disregarded in all the worlds. Therefore, let your grace be shown by not rejecting me."
महाभागा भवत्यो वै शरण्याः शरणागताम् ।
परित्रायन्तु मां नित्यं भजमानामनिन्दिताम् ।
माननां त्वहमिच्छामि भवत्यः सततं शुभाः ॥१९॥
19. mahābhāgā bhavatyo vai śaraṇyāḥ śaraṇāgatām ,
paritrāyantu māṁ nityaṁ bhajamānāmaninditām ,
mānanāṁ tvahamicchāmi bhavatyaḥ satataṁ śubhāḥ.
19. mahābhāgāḥ bhavatyaḥ vai śaraṇyāḥ
śaraṇāgatām paritrāyantu mām nityam
bhajamānām aninditām mānanām tu
aham icchāmi bhavatyaḥ satatam śubhāḥ
19. mahābhāgāḥ bhavatyaḥ vai śaraṇyāḥ
mām śaraṇāgatām bhajamānām aninditām
nityam paritrāyantu tu aham
satatam bhavatyaḥ śubhāḥ mānanām icchāmi
19. O highly fortunate and auspicious ladies, you are indeed worthy of resort. May you always protect me, who has sought refuge, who is blameless, and who worships you. I truly desire your constant respect.
अप्येकाङ्गे तु वो वस्तुमिच्छामि च सुकुत्सिते ।
न वोऽस्ति कुत्सितं किंचिदङ्गेष्वालक्ष्यतेऽनघाः ॥२०॥
20. apyekāṅge tu vo vastumicchāmi ca sukutsite ,
na vo'sti kutsitaṁ kiṁcidaṅgeṣvālakṣyate'naghāḥ.
20. api ekāṅge tu vaḥ vastum icchāmi ca sukutsite na
vaḥ asti kutsitam kiñcit aṅgeṣu ālakṣyate anaghāḥ
20. tu aham vaḥ ekāṅge api sukutsite ca vastum icchāmi na
hi anaghāḥ vaḥ aṅgeṣu kiñcit kutsitam ālakṣyate asti
20. I wish to dwell even in a single limb of yours, even if it were very repulsive. Yet, O sinless ones, nothing repulsive is to be seen in any of your limbs.
पुण्याः पवित्राः सुभगा ममादेशं प्रयच्छत ।
वसेयं यत्र चाङ्गेऽहं तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हथ ॥२१॥
21. puṇyāḥ pavitrāḥ subhagā mamādeśaṁ prayacchata ,
vaseyaṁ yatra cāṅge'haṁ tanme vyākhyātumarhatha.
21. puṇyāḥ pavitrāḥ subhagāḥ mama ādeśam prayacchata
vaseyam yatra ca aṅge aham tat me vyākhyātum arhatha
21. O meritorious, pure, and auspicious ones, please grant my request. You should explain to me where I can reside within your being.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमुक्तास्तु ता गावः शुभाः करुणवत्सलाः ।
संमन्त्र्य सहिताः सर्वाः श्रियमूचुर्नराधिप ॥२२॥
22. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evamuktāstu tā gāvaḥ śubhāḥ karuṇavatsalāḥ ,
saṁmantrya sahitāḥ sarvāḥ śriyamūcurnarādhipa.
22. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca evam uktāḥ tu tāḥ gāvaḥ śubhāḥ karuṇavatsalāḥ
sammantrya sahitāḥ sarvāḥ śriyam ūcuḥ narādhipa
22. Bhishma said: O King, those auspicious and compassionate cows, thus addressed, all deliberated together and then spoke to (goddess) Śrī.
अवश्यं मानना कार्या तवास्माभिर्यशस्विनि ।
शकृन्मूत्रे निवस नः पुण्यमेतद्धि नः शुभे ॥२३॥
23. avaśyaṁ mānanā kāryā tavāsmābhiryaśasvini ,
śakṛnmūtre nivasa naḥ puṇyametaddhi naḥ śubhe.
23. avaśyam mānanā kāryā tava asmābhiḥ yaśasvini
śakṛt mūtre nivasa naḥ puṇyam etat hi naḥ śubhe
23. O glorious one, your request must certainly be honored by us. O auspicious one, reside in our dung and urine, for this is indeed a meritorious act for us.
श्रीरुवाच ।
दिष्ट्या प्रसादो युष्माभिः कृतो मेऽनुग्रहात्मकः ।
एवं भवतु भद्रं वः पूजितास्मि सुखप्रदाः ॥२४॥
24. śrīruvāca ,
diṣṭyā prasādo yuṣmābhiḥ kṛto me'nugrahātmakaḥ ,
evaṁ bhavatu bhadraṁ vaḥ pūjitāsmi sukhapradāḥ.
24. śrīḥ uvāca diṣṭyā prasādaḥ yuṣmābhiḥ kṛtaḥ me anugrahātmakaḥ
evam bhavatu bhadram vaḥ pūjitā asmi sukhapradāḥ
24. Śrī said: Fortunately, you have shown me a favor characterized by grace. So be it. May there be well-being for you all. O givers of happiness, I feel honored.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवं कृत्वा तु समयं श्रीर्गोभिः सह भारत ।
पश्यन्तीनां ततस्तासां तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥२५॥
25. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evaṁ kṛtvā tu samayaṁ śrīrgobhiḥ saha bhārata ,
paśyantīnāṁ tatastāsāṁ tatraivāntaradhīyata.
25. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca evam kṛtvā tu samayam śrīḥ gobhiḥ saha
bhārata paśyantīnām tataḥ tāsām tatra eva antardhīyata
25. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca he bhārata evam gobhiḥ saha samayam kṛtvā
tu tataḥ tāsām paśyantīnām śrīḥ tatra eva antardhīyata
25. Bhishma said, "O Bharata, having thus made an agreement with the cows, Śrī then disappeared right there while they were watching."
एतद्गोशकृतः पुत्र माहात्म्यं तेऽनुवर्णितम् ।
माहात्म्यं च गवां भूयः श्रूयतां गदतो मम ॥२६॥
26. etadgośakṛtaḥ putra māhātmyaṁ te'nuvarṇitam ,
māhātmyaṁ ca gavāṁ bhūyaḥ śrūyatāṁ gadato mama.
26. etat gośakṛtaḥ putra māhātmyam te anuvārṇitam
māhātmyam ca gavām bhūyaḥ śrūyatām gadataḥ mama
26. putra etat gośakṛtaḥ māhātmyam te anuvārṇitam
ca mama gadataḥ gavām māhātmyam bhūyaḥ śrūyatām
26. O son, this glory (māhātmya) of cow dung has been described to you. Now, let the glory (māhātmya) of cows be heard further, as I speak.
