वैशंपायन उवाच ।
उत्तरं सारथिं कृत्वा शमीं कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम् ।
आयुधं सर्वमादाय ततः प्रायाद्धनंजयः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
uttaraṁ sārathiṁ kṛtvā śamīṁ kṛtvā pradakṣiṇam ,
āyudhaṁ sarvamādāya tataḥ prāyāddhanaṁjayaḥ.
1. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca uttaram sārathim kṛtvā śamīm kṛtvā
pradakṣiṇam āyudham sarvam ādāya tataḥ prāyāt dhanaṃjayaḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having made Uttara his charioteer and having circumambulated the śamī tree, Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna) then took all his weapons and set out.
ध्वजं सिंहं रथात्तस्मादपनीय महारथः ।
प्रणिधाय शमीमूले प्रायादुत्तरसारथिः ॥२॥
2. dhvajaṁ siṁhaṁ rathāttasmādapanīya mahārathaḥ ,
praṇidhāya śamīmūle prāyāduttarasārathiḥ.
2. dhvajam siṃham rathāt tasmāt apanīya mahā-rathaḥ
praṇidhāya śamī-mūle prāyāt uttara-sārathiḥ
2. The great charioteer (Arjuna), after taking down that lion banner from the chariot and placing it at the base of the śamī tree, then departed with Uttara as his charioteer.
दैवीं मायां रथे युक्त्वा विहितां विश्वकर्मणा ।
काञ्चनं सिंहलाङ्गूलं ध्वजं वानरलक्षणम् ॥३॥
3. daivīṁ māyāṁ rathe yuktvā vihitāṁ viśvakarmaṇā ,
kāñcanaṁ siṁhalāṅgūlaṁ dhvajaṁ vānaralakṣaṇam.
3. daivīm māyām rathe yuktvā vihitām viśvakarmaṇā
kāñcanam siṃhalāṅgūlam dhvajam vānaralakṣaṇam
3. Having attached to the chariot a divine, creative power (māyā) fashioned by Viśvakarma, along with a golden lion's tail, a banner, and a monkey emblem.
मनसा चिन्तयामास प्रसादं पावकस्य च ।
स च तच्चिन्तितं ज्ञात्वा ध्वजे भूतान्यचोदयत् ॥४॥
4. manasā cintayāmāsa prasādaṁ pāvakasya ca ,
sa ca taccintitaṁ jñātvā dhvaje bhūtānyacodayat.
4. manasā cintayāmāsa prasādam pāvakasyā ca saḥ
ca tat cintitam jñātvā dhvaje bhūtāni acodayat
4. He (Arjuna) meditated in his mind on the favor of Agni. And [Hanumān], knowing what had been thought, impelled [various] beings onto the banner.
सपताकं विचित्राङ्गं सोपासङ्गं महारथः ।
रथमास्थाय बीभत्सुः कौन्तेयः श्वेतवाहनः ॥५॥
5. sapatākaṁ vicitrāṅgaṁ sopāsaṅgaṁ mahārathaḥ ,
rathamāsthāya bībhatsuḥ kaunteyaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ.
5. sapatākam vicitrāṅgam sopāsaṅgam mahārathaḥ
ratham āsthāya bībhatsuḥ kaunteyaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ
5. The great warrior (mahāratha), Bibhatsu (bībhatsu), the son of Kunti (kaunteya), whose steeds were white (śvetavāhana), having ascended his chariot - which was adorned with flags, of intricate design, and equipped with quivers -
बद्धासिः सतनुत्राणः प्रगृहीतशरासनः ।
ततः प्रायादुदीचीं स कपिप्रवरकेतनः ॥६॥
6. baddhāsiḥ satanutrāṇaḥ pragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ ,
tataḥ prāyādudīcīṁ sa kapipravaraketanaḥ.
6. baddhāsiḥ satanutrāṇaḥ pragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ
tataḥ prāyāt udīcīm saḥ kapipravaraketanaḥ
6. Having his sword fastened, wearing armor, and with his bow in hand, he (Arjuna) - whose banner bore the chief of monkeys (Hanumān) - then proceeded towards the north.
स्वनवन्तं महाशङ्खं बलवानरिमर्दनः ।
प्राधमद्बलमास्थाय द्विषतां लोमहर्षणम् ॥७॥
7. svanavantaṁ mahāśaṅkhaṁ balavānarimardanaḥ ,
prādhamadbalamāsthāya dviṣatāṁ lomaharṣaṇam.
7. svanavantam mahāśaṅkham balavān arimardanaḥ
prādhamat balam āsthāya dviṣatām lomaharṣaṇam
7. The strong subduer of enemies (arimardanaḥ), employing his full strength, blew the resounding great conch shell, which was hair-raising for the adversaries.
ततस्ते जवना धुर्या जानुभ्यामगमन्महीम् ।
उत्तरश्चापि संत्रस्तो रथोपस्थ उपाविशत् ॥८॥
8. tataste javanā dhuryā jānubhyāmagamanmahīm ,
uttaraścāpi saṁtrasto rathopastha upāviśat.
8. tataḥ te javanāḥ dhuryāḥ jānubhyām agaman mahīm
uttaraḥ ca api saṃtrastaḥ rathopasthe upāviśat
8. Then, those swift leading horses collapsed to the ground on their knees. And Uttara, greatly terrified, sat down in the chariot's seat.
संस्थाप्य चाश्वान्कौन्तेयः समुद्यम्य च रश्मिभिः ।
उत्तरं च परिष्वज्य समाश्वासयदर्जुनः ॥९॥
9. saṁsthāpya cāśvānkaunteyaḥ samudyamya ca raśmibhiḥ ,
uttaraṁ ca pariṣvajya samāśvāsayadarjunaḥ.
9. saṃsthāpya ca aśvān kaunteyaḥ samudyamya ca
raśmibhiḥ uttaram ca pariṣvajya samāśvāsayat arjunaḥ
9. Having stopped the horses and reined them in with the reins, Arjuna (Kaunteya) embraced Uttara and then comforted him.
मा भैस्त्वं राजपुत्राग्र्य क्षत्रियोऽसि परंतप ।
कथं पुरुषशार्दूल शत्रुमध्ये विषीदसि ॥१०॥
10. mā bhaistvaṁ rājaputrāgrya kṣatriyo'si paraṁtapa ,
kathaṁ puruṣaśārdūla śatrumadhye viṣīdasi.
10. mā bhaiḥ tvam rājaputrāgrya kṣatriyaḥ asi
paraṃtapa katham puruṣaśārdūla śatrumadhye viṣīdasi
10. "Do not fear, O foremost among princes! You are a warrior (kṣatriya), O tormentor of enemies (paraṃtapa)! Why, O tiger among men (puruṣaśārdūla), do you despair in the midst of your foes?"
श्रुतास्ते शङ्खशब्दाश्च भेरीशब्दाश्च पुष्कलाः ।
कुञ्जराणां च नदतां व्यूढानीकेषु तिष्ठताम् ॥११॥
11. śrutāste śaṅkhaśabdāśca bherīśabdāśca puṣkalāḥ ,
kuñjarāṇāṁ ca nadatāṁ vyūḍhānīkeṣu tiṣṭhatām.
11. śrutāḥ te śaṅkhaśabdāḥ ca bherīśabdāḥ ca puṣkalāḥ
kuñjarāṇām ca nadatām vyūḍhānīkeṣu tiṣṭhatām
11. You have heard the mighty sounds of conches and drums, and the roars of elephants standing within the arrayed armies.
स त्वं कथमिहानेन शङ्खशब्देन भीषितः ।
विषण्णरूपो वित्रस्तः पुरुषः प्राकृतो यथा ॥१२॥
12. sa tvaṁ kathamihānena śaṅkhaśabdena bhīṣitaḥ ,
viṣaṇṇarūpo vitrastaḥ puruṣaḥ prākṛto yathā.
12. sa tvam katham iha anena śaṅkhaśabdena bhīṣitaḥ
viṣaṇṇarūpaḥ vitrastaḥ puruṣaḥ prākṛtaḥ yathā
12. How is it that you are now frightened by this conch sound, appearing dejected and utterly terrified, just like an ordinary man?
उत्तर उवाच ।
श्रुता मे शङ्खशब्दाश्च भेरीशब्दाश्च पुष्कलाः ।
कुञ्जराणां च निनदा व्यूढानीकेषु तिष्ठताम् ॥१३॥
13. uttara uvāca ,
śrutā me śaṅkhaśabdāśca bherīśabdāśca puṣkalāḥ ,
kuñjarāṇāṁ ca ninadā vyūḍhānīkeṣu tiṣṭhatām.
13. uttaraḥ uvāca śrutāḥ me śaṅkhaśabdāḥ ca bherīśabdāḥ ca
puṣkalāḥ kuñjarāṇām ca ninadāḥ vyūḍhānīkeṣu tiṣṭhatām
13. Uttara replied: I have indeed heard the mighty sounds of conches and drums, and the roars of elephants standing within the arrayed armies.
नैवंविधः शङ्खशब्दः पुरा जातु मया श्रुतः ।
ध्वजस्य चापि रूपं मे दृष्टपूर्वं न हीदृशम् ।
धनुषश्चैव निर्घोषः श्रुतपूर्वो न मे क्वचित् ॥१४॥
14. naivaṁvidhaḥ śaṅkhaśabdaḥ purā jātu mayā śrutaḥ ,
dhvajasya cāpi rūpaṁ me dṛṣṭapūrvaṁ na hīdṛśam ,
dhanuṣaścaiva nirghoṣaḥ śrutapūrvo na me kvacit.
14. na evam vidhaḥ śaṅkhaśabdaḥ purā jātu
mayā śrutaḥ dhvajasya ca api rūpam me
dṛṣṭapūrvam na hi īdṛśam dhanuṣaḥ ca
eva nirghoṣaḥ śrutapūrvaḥ na me kvacit
14. I have never before heard a conch sound of this kind. Indeed, such a form of a banner has also never been seen by me previously. And the twang of a bow like this has never been heard by me anywhere.
अस्य शङ्खस्य शब्देन धनुषो निस्वनेन च ।
रथस्य च निनादेन मनो मुह्यति मे भृशम् ॥१५॥
15. asya śaṅkhasya śabdena dhanuṣo nisvanena ca ,
rathasya ca ninādena mano muhyati me bhṛśam.
15. asya śaṅkhasya śabdena dhanuṣaḥ nisvanena ca
rathasya ca ninādena manaḥ muhyati me bhṛśam
15. By the sound of this conch, by the twang of the bow, and by the roar of the chariot, my mind is greatly bewildered.
व्याकुलाश्च दिशः सर्वा हृदयं व्यथतीव मे ।
ध्वजेन पिहिताः सर्वा दिशो न प्रतिभान्ति मे ।
गाण्डीवस्य च शब्देन कर्णौ मे बधिरीकृतौ ॥१६॥
16. vyākulāśca diśaḥ sarvā hṛdayaṁ vyathatīva me ,
dhvajena pihitāḥ sarvā diśo na pratibhānti me ,
gāṇḍīvasya ca śabdena karṇau me badhirīkṛtau.
16. vyākulāḥ ca diśaḥ sarvāḥ hṛdayam
vyathati iva me dhvajena pihitāḥ sarvāḥ
diśaḥ na pratibhānti me gāṇḍīvasya
ca śabdena karṇau me badhirīkṛtau
16. And all directions are agitated, and my heart feels pain. All directions, concealed by the banner, do not appear to me. And by the sound of the Gāṇḍīva (bow), my ears have been deafened.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
एकान्ते रथमास्थाय पद्भ्यां त्वमवपीडय ।
दृढं च रश्मीन्संयच्छ शङ्खं ध्मास्याम्यहं पुनः ॥१७॥
17. arjuna uvāca ,
ekānte rathamāsthāya padbhyāṁ tvamavapīḍaya ,
dṛḍhaṁ ca raśmīnsaṁyaccha śaṅkhaṁ dhmāsyāmyahaṁ punaḥ.
17. arjunaḥ uvāca ekānte ratham āsthāya padbhyām tvam avapīḍaya
dṛḍham ca raśmīn saṃyaccha śaṅkham dhmāsyāmi aham punaḥ
17. Arjuna said: "Having placed the chariot aside in a secluded spot, press down with your feet. And firmly hold the reins. I will blow the conch again."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्य शङ्खस्य शब्देन रथनेमिस्वनेन च ।
गाण्डीवस्य च घोषेण पृथिवी समकम्पत ॥१८॥
18. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasya śaṅkhasya śabdena rathanemisvanena ca ,
gāṇḍīvasya ca ghoṣeṇa pṛthivī samakampata.
18. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tasya śaṅkhasya śabdena rathanemisvanena
ca gāṇḍīvasya ca ghoṣeṇa pṛthivī samakampata
18. Vaiśampāyana said: "By the sound of that conch, by the noise of the chariot wheels, and by the roar of the Gāṇḍīva (bow), the earth trembled."
द्रोण उवाच ।
यथा रथस्य निर्घोषो यथा शङ्ख उदीर्यते ।
कम्पते च यथा भूमिर्नैषोऽन्यः सव्यसाचिनः ॥१९॥
19. droṇa uvāca ,
yathā rathasya nirghoṣo yathā śaṅkha udīryate ,
kampate ca yathā bhūmirnaiṣo'nyaḥ savyasācinaḥ.
19. droṇaḥ uvāca | yathā rathasya nirghoṣaḥ yathā śaṅkhaḥ
udīryate | kampate ca yathā bhūmiḥ na eṣaḥ anyaḥ savyasācinaḥ
19. Droṇa said: The roar of the chariot, the way the conch is blown, and how the earth trembles - this can be no one else but the ambidextrous one (Arjuna).
शस्त्राणि न प्रकाशन्ते न प्रहृष्यन्ति वाजिनः ।
अग्नयश्च न भासन्ते समिद्धास्तन्न शोभनम् ॥२०॥
20. śastrāṇi na prakāśante na prahṛṣyanti vājinaḥ ,
agnayaśca na bhāsante samiddhāstanna śobhanam.
20. śastrāṇi na prakāśante na prahṛṣyanti vājinaḥ |
agnayaḥ ca na bhāsante samiddhāḥ tat na śobhanam
20. Our weapons do not shine, the horses do not neigh joyfully, and even the blazing fires do not glow brightly. This is not a good sign.
प्रत्यादित्यं च नः सर्वे मृगा घोरप्रवादिनः ।
ध्वजेषु च निलीयन्ते वायसास्तन्न शोभनम् ।
शकुनाश्चापसव्या नो वेदयन्ति महद्भयम् ॥२१॥
21. pratyādityaṁ ca naḥ sarve mṛgā ghorapravādinaḥ ,
dhvajeṣu ca nilīyante vāyasāstanna śobhanam ,
śakunāścāpasavyā no vedayanti mahadbhayam.
21. pratyādityam ca naḥ sarve mṛgāḥ
ghorapravādinaḥ | dhvajeṣu ca nilīyante
vāyasāḥ tat na śobhanam | śakunāḥ ca
apasavyāḥ naḥ vedayanti mahat bhayam
21. All the fierce-sounding animals are facing the sun, and crows are perching on our banners. This is not a good sign. Furthermore, ill-omened birds (śakunā) on our left are indicating great fear for us.
गोमायुरेष सेनाया रुवन्मध्येऽनुधावति ।
अनाहतश्च निष्क्रान्तो महद्वेदयते भयम् ।
भवतां रोमकूपाणि प्रहृष्टान्युपलक्षये ॥२२॥
22. gomāyureṣa senāyā ruvanmadhye'nudhāvati ,
anāhataśca niṣkrānto mahadvedayate bhayam ,
bhavatāṁ romakūpāṇi prahṛṣṭānyupalakṣaye.
22. gomāyuḥ eṣaḥ senāyāḥ ruvan madhye
anu dhāvati | anāhataḥ ca niṣkrāntaḥ
mahat vedayate bhayam | bhavatām
romakūpāṇi prahṛṣṭāni upalakṣaye
22. This jackal is howling and running through the middle of the army. It has come out unprovoked, indicating great fear. I observe your body hairs standing on end.
पराभूता च वः सेना न कश्चिद्योद्धुमिच्छति ।
विवर्णमुखभूयिष्ठाः सर्वे योधा विचेतसः ।
गाः संप्रस्थाप्य तिष्ठामो व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः ॥२३॥
23. parābhūtā ca vaḥ senā na kaścidyoddhumicchati ,
vivarṇamukhabhūyiṣṭhāḥ sarve yodhā vicetasaḥ ,
gāḥ saṁprasthāpya tiṣṭhāmo vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ.
23. parābhūtā ca vaḥ senā na kaścit yoddhum
icchati vivarṇamukhabhūyiṣṭhāḥ
sarve yodhāḥ vicetasaḥ gāḥ samprasthāpya
tiṣṭhāmaḥ vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ
23. Your army is defeated, and no one wishes to fight. All the warriors are mostly pale-faced and bewildered. We will remain here, having sent the cows ahead, with our ranks arrayed and ready to attack.
