लोमश उवाच ।
भृगोर्महर्षेः पुत्रोऽभूच्च्यवनो नाम भार्गवः ।
समीपे सरसः सोऽस्य तपस्तेपे महाद्युतिः ॥१॥
1. lomaśa uvāca ,
bhṛgormaharṣeḥ putro'bhūccyavano nāma bhārgavaḥ ,
samīpe sarasaḥ so'sya tapastepe mahādyutiḥ.

bhārgavaḥ samīpe sarasaḥ saḥ asya tapaḥ tepe mahādyutiḥ
1. Lomaśa said: "The son of the great sage Bhrigu was a descendant of Bhrigu (bhārgavaḥ) named Cyavana. He, of great splendor (mahādyutiḥ), performed penance (tapas) near that lake."
स्थाणुभूतो महातेजा वीरस्थानेन पाण्डव ।
अतिष्ठत्सुबहून्कालानेकदेशे विशां पते ॥२॥
2. sthāṇubhūto mahātejā vīrasthānena pāṇḍava ,
atiṣṭhatsubahūnkālānekadeśe viśāṁ pate.

atiṣṭhat subahūn kālān ekadeśe viśām pate
2. O Pāṇḍava, O lord of men (viśāṃ pate), that greatly energetic one (mahātejāḥ) stood motionless (sthāṇubhūtaḥ) like a post, in a heroic posture, remaining in one spot for a very long time.
स वल्मीकोऽभवदृषिर्लताभिरभिसंवृतः ।
कालेन महता राजन्समाकीर्णः पिपीलिकैः ॥३॥
3. sa valmīko'bhavadṛṣirlatābhirabhisaṁvṛtaḥ ,
kālena mahatā rājansamākīrṇaḥ pipīlikaiḥ.
3. sa valmīkaḥ abhavat ṛṣiḥ latābhiḥ abhisaṃvṛtaḥ
kālena mahatā rājan samākīrṇaḥ pipīlikaiḥ
3. The sage became a termite mound, completely covered by creepers. After a long time, O king, he was swarmed by ants.
तथा स संवृतो धीमान्मृत्पिण्ड इव सर्वशः ।
तप्यति स्म तपो राजन्वल्मीकेन समावृतः ॥४॥
4. tathā sa saṁvṛto dhīmānmṛtpiṇḍa iva sarvaśaḥ ,
tapyati sma tapo rājanvalmīkena samāvṛtaḥ.
4. tathā saḥ saṃvṛtaḥ dhīmān mṛtpiṇḍaḥ iva sarvaśaḥ
tapyati sma tapaḥ rājan valmīkena samāvṛtaḥ
4. Thus, that intelligent one, covered entirely like a lump of clay, performed his austerity (tapas), O king, enveloped by the anthill.
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य शर्यातिर्नाम पार्थिवः ।
आजगाम सरो रम्यं विहर्तुमिदमुत्तमम् ॥५॥
5. atha dīrghasya kālasya śaryātirnāma pārthivaḥ ,
ājagāma saro ramyaṁ vihartumidamuttamam.

ājagāma saraḥ ramyam vihartum idam uttamam
5. Then, after a long time, a king named Śaryāti came to this excellent and beautiful lake to relax.
तस्य स्त्रीणां सहस्राणि चत्वार्यासन्परिग्रहः ।
एकैव च सुता शुभ्रा सुकन्या नाम भारत ॥६॥
6. tasya strīṇāṁ sahasrāṇi catvāryāsanparigrahaḥ ,
ekaiva ca sutā śubhrā sukanyā nāma bhārata.
6. tasya strīṇām sahasrāṇi catvāri āsan parigrahaḥ
ekā eva ca sutā śubhrā sukanyā nāma bhārata
6. He had four thousand women in his retinue. And he had only one radiant daughter named Sukanyā, O Bhārata.
सा सखीभिः परिवृता सर्वाभरणभूषिता ।
चङ्क्रम्यमाणा वल्मीकं भार्गवस्य समासदत् ॥७॥
7. sā sakhībhiḥ parivṛtā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā ,
caṅkramyamāṇā valmīkaṁ bhārgavasya samāsadat.

caṅkramyamāṇā valmīkam bhārgavasya samāsadat
7. She, accompanied by her female friends and adorned with all her ornaments, approached the anthill of Bhārgava while strolling.
सा चैव सुदती तत्र पश्यमाना मनोरमान् ।
वनस्पतीन्विचिन्वन्ती विजहार सखीवृता ॥८॥
8. sā caiva sudatī tatra paśyamānā manoramān ,
vanaspatīnvicinvantī vijahāra sakhīvṛtā.
8. sā ca eva sudatī tatra paśyamānā manoramān
vanaspatīn vicinvantī vijahāra sakhīvṛtā
8. And indeed, that woman with beautiful teeth, accompanied by her friends, sported there, observing the charming trees and gathering plants.
रूपेण वयसा चैव मदनेन मदेन च ।
बभञ्ज वनवृक्षाणां शाखाः परमपुष्पिताः ॥९॥
9. rūpeṇa vayasā caiva madanena madena ca ,
babhañja vanavṛkṣāṇāṁ śākhāḥ paramapuṣpitāḥ.
9. rūpeṇa vayasā ca eva madanena madena ca
babhañja vanavṛkṣāṇām śākhāḥ paramapuṣpitāḥ
9. Indeed, due to her beauty, youth, passion (madana), and exhilaration, she broke the profusely blooming branches of the forest trees.
तां सखीरहितामेकामेकवस्त्रामलंकृताम् ।
ददर्श भार्गवो धीमांश्चरन्तीमिव विद्युतम् ॥१०॥
10. tāṁ sakhīrahitāmekāmekavastrāmalaṁkṛtām ,
dadarśa bhārgavo dhīmāṁścarantīmiva vidyutam.
10. tām sakhīrahitām ekām ekavastrām alaṅkṛtām
dadarśa bhārgavaḥ dhīmān carantīm iva vidyutam
10. The intelligent Bhārgava saw her, alone and unaccompanied by friends, wearing a single garment and adorned, moving about like a flash of lightning.
तां पश्यमानो विजने स रेमे परमद्युतिः ।
क्षामकण्ठश्च ब्रह्मर्षिस्तपोबलसमन्वितः ।
तामाबभाषे कल्याणीं सा चास्य न शृणोति वै ॥११॥
11. tāṁ paśyamāno vijane sa reme paramadyutiḥ ,
kṣāmakaṇṭhaśca brahmarṣistapobalasamanvitaḥ ,
tāmābabhāṣe kalyāṇīṁ sā cāsya na śṛṇoti vai.
11. tām paśyamānaḥ vijane sa reme
paramadyutiḥ kṣāmakaṇṭhaḥ ca brahmarṣiḥ
tapobalasamanvitaḥ tām ābabhāṣe
kalyāṇīm sā ca asya na śṛṇoti vai
11. Seeing her in that secluded place, that supremely radiant brahmin sage (brahmarṣi), whose neck was thin and who was endowed with the power of asceticism (tapas), delighted in her presence. He spoke to that auspicious lady, but she truly did not hear him.
ततः सुकन्या वल्मीके दृष्ट्वा भार्गवचक्षुषी ।
कौतूहलात्कण्टकेन बुद्धिमोहबलात्कृता ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ sukanyā valmīke dṛṣṭvā bhārgavacakṣuṣī ,
kautūhalātkaṇṭakena buddhimohabalātkṛtā.
12. tataḥ sukanyā valmīke dṛṣṭvā bhārgavacaksṣuṣī
kautūhalāt kaṇṭakena buddhimohabalātkṛtā
12. Then Sukanya, upon seeing the two eyes of Bhargava (Chyavana) in the anthill, was, due to curiosity and compelled by a force of mental delusion, led to act with a thorn.
किं नु खल्विदमित्युक्त्वा निर्बिभेदास्य लोचने ।
अक्रुध्यत्स तया विद्धे नेत्रे परममन्युमान् ।
ततः शर्यातिसैन्यस्य शकृन्मूत्रं समावृणोत् ॥१३॥
13. kiṁ nu khalvidamityuktvā nirbibhedāsya locane ,
akrudhyatsa tayā viddhe netre paramamanyumān ,
tataḥ śaryātisainyasya śakṛnmūtraṁ samāvṛṇot.
13. kim nu khalu idam iti uktvā nirbibheda
asya locane | akrudhyat sa tayā
viddhe netre paramamanyumān | tataḥ
śaryātisainyasya śakṛnmūtram samāvṛṇot
13. "What indeed is this?" Saying this, she (Sukanya) pierced his (Chyavana's) two eyes. He, possessing supreme wrath, became angry when his eyes were pierced by her. Then, he (Chyavana) completely obstructed the passage of feces and urine for King Sharyati's army.
ततो रुद्धे शकृन्मूत्रे सैन्यमानाहदुःखितम् ।
तथागतमभिप्रेक्ष्य पर्यपृच्छत्स पार्थिवः ॥१४॥
14. tato ruddhe śakṛnmūtre sainyamānāhaduḥkhitam ,
tathāgatamabhiprekṣya paryapṛcchatsa pārthivaḥ.
14. tataḥ ruddhe śakṛnmūtre sainyam ānāhaduḥkhitam |
tathāgatam abhiprekṣya paryapṛcchat sa pārthivaḥ
14. Then, as their feces and urine became obstructed, the army was afflicted with severe abdominal distress. The king (pārthivaḥ), observing them in such a state, inquired.
तपोनित्यस्य वृद्धस्य रोषणस्य विशेषतः ।
केनापकृतमद्येह भार्गवस्य महात्मनः ।
ज्ञातं वा यदि वाज्ञातं तदृतं ब्रूत माचिरम् ॥१५॥
15. taponityasya vṛddhasya roṣaṇasya viśeṣataḥ ,
kenāpakṛtamadyeha bhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
jñātaṁ vā yadi vājñātaṁ tadṛtaṁ brūta māciram.
15. taponityasya vṛddhasya roṣaṇasya
viśeṣataḥ kena apakṛtam adya iha
bhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ jñātam vā yadi
vā ajñātam tat ṛtam brūta mā ciram
15. By whom has a wrong been done here today to the great-souled Bhargava, who is aged, always engaged in asceticism (tapas), and especially prone to anger? Whether it is known or unknown, speak that truth without delay.
तमूचुः सैनिकाः सर्वे न विद्मोऽपकृतं वयम् ।
सर्वोपायैर्यथाकामं भवांस्तदधिगच्छतु ॥१६॥
16. tamūcuḥ sainikāḥ sarve na vidmo'pakṛtaṁ vayam ,
sarvopāyairyathākāmaṁ bhavāṁstadadhigacchatu.
16. tam ūcuḥ sainikāḥ sarve na vidmaḥ apakṛtam vayam
sarvopāyaiḥ yathākāmam bhavān tat adhigacchatu
16. All the soldiers said to him, 'We do not know what wrong was done. May your honor discover that by all possible means, as you wish.'
ततः स पृथिवीपालः साम्ना चोग्रेण च स्वयम् ।
पर्यपृच्छत्सुहृद्वर्गं प्रत्यजानन्न चैव ते ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ sa pṛthivīpālaḥ sāmnā cogreṇa ca svayam ,
paryapṛcchatsuhṛdvargaṁ pratyajānanna caiva te.
17. tataḥ sa pṛthivīpālaḥ sāmnā ca ugreṇa ca svayam
paryapṛcchat suhṛdvargam prati ajānan na ca eva te
17. Then, that king himself questioned his circle of friends using both gentle and severe methods. However, they, too, did not acknowledge anything.
आनाहार्तं ततो दृष्ट्वा तत्सैन्यमसुखार्दितम् ।
पितरं दुःखितं चापि सुकन्येदमथाब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. ānāhārtaṁ tato dṛṣṭvā tatsainyamasukhārditam ,
pitaraṁ duḥkhitaṁ cāpi sukanyedamathābravīt.
18. ānāhārārtam tataḥ dṛṣṭvā tat sainyam asukhārditam
pitaram duḥkhitam ca api sukanyā idam atha abravīt
18. Then, seeing that army afflicted by hunger and unhappiness, and her father also distressed, Sukanyā then said this.
मयाटन्त्येह वल्मीके दृष्टं सत्त्वमभिज्वलत् ।
खद्योतवदभिज्ञातं तन्मया विद्धमन्तिकात् ॥१९॥
19. mayāṭantyeha valmīke dṛṣṭaṁ sattvamabhijvalat ,
khadyotavadabhijñātaṁ tanmayā viddhamantikāt.
19. mayā aṭantyā iha valmīke dṛṣṭam sattvam abhijvalat
khadyotavat abhijñātam tat mayā viddham antikāt
19. While I was wandering here, I saw a brightly shining being within an anthill. I recognized it as something like a firefly, and then I pierced it from nearby.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु शर्यातिर्वल्मीकं तूर्णमाद्रवत् ।
तत्रापश्यत्तपोवृद्धं वयोवृद्धं च भार्गवम् ॥२०॥
20. etacchrutvā tu śaryātirvalmīkaṁ tūrṇamādravat ,
tatrāpaśyattapovṛddhaṁ vayovṛddhaṁ ca bhārgavam.
20. etat śrutvā tu śaryātiḥ valmīkam tūrṇam ādravat
tatra apaśyat tapovṛddham vayovṛddham ca bhārgavam
20. Upon hearing this, Śaryāti quickly rushed to the anthill. There, he saw the sage Bhārgava, who was aged both by ascetic practice (tapas) and by years.
अयाचदथ सैन्यार्थं प्राञ्जलिः पृथिवीपतिः ।
अज्ञानाद्बालया यत्ते कृतं तत्क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥२१॥
21. ayācadatha sainyārthaṁ prāñjaliḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ ,
ajñānādbālayā yatte kṛtaṁ tatkṣantumarhasi.
21. ayācat atha sainyārtham prāñjaliḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ
ajñānāt bālayā yat te kṛtam tat kṣantum arhasi
21. Then the king (pṛthivīpati), with folded hands, pleaded on behalf of his army: 'Whatever was done by the young girl out of ignorance, you should forgive that.'
ततोऽब्रवीन्महीपालं च्यवनो भार्गवस्तदा ।
रूपौदार्यसमायुक्तां लोभमोहबलात्कृताम् ॥२२॥
22. tato'bravīnmahīpālaṁ cyavano bhārgavastadā ,
rūpaudāryasamāyuktāṁ lobhamohabalātkṛtām.
22. tataḥ abravīt mahīpālam cyavanaḥ bhārgavaḥ
tadā rūpaudāryasamāyuktām lobhamohabalātkṛtām
22. Then Chyavana, the descendant of Bhṛgu (Bhārgava), spoke to the king (mahīpāla) concerning the girl, who was endowed with beauty and grace but was compelled by greed and delusion.
तामेव प्रतिगृह्याहं राजन्दुहितरं तव ।
क्षमिष्यामि महीपाल सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥२३॥
23. tāmeva pratigṛhyāhaṁ rājanduhitaraṁ tava ,
kṣamiṣyāmi mahīpāla satyametadbravīmi te.
23. tām eva pratigṛhya aham rājan duhitaram tava
kṣamiṣyāmi mahīpāla satyam etat bravīmi te
23. O King, O protector of the earth, I will forgive (you) upon accepting your daughter. I speak this truth to you.
ऋषेर्वचनमाज्ञाय शर्यातिरविचारयन् ।
ददौ दुहितरं तस्मै च्यवनाय महात्मने ॥२४॥
24. ṛṣervacanamājñāya śaryātiravicārayan ,
dadau duhitaraṁ tasmai cyavanāya mahātmane.
24. ṛṣeḥ vacanam ājñāya śaryātiḥ avicārayan
dadau duhitaram tasmai cyavanāya mahātmane
24. Having understood the sage's word, Śaryāti, without deliberating, gave his daughter to the great-souled (mahātman) Cyavana.
प्रतिगृह्य च तां कन्यां च्यवनः प्रससाद ह ।
प्राप्तप्रसादो राजा स ससैन्यः पुनराव्रजत् ॥२५॥
25. pratigṛhya ca tāṁ kanyāṁ cyavanaḥ prasasāda ha ,
prāptaprasādo rājā sa sasainyaḥ punarāvrajat.
25. pratigṛhya ca tām kanyām cyavanaḥ prasasāda ha
prāptaprasādaḥ rājā saḥ sasainyaḥ punaḥ avrajat
25. And having accepted that maiden, Cyavana was indeed pleased. That king, having received his favor, returned with his army.
सुकन्यापि पतिं लब्ध्वा तपस्विनमनिन्दिता ।
नित्यं पर्यचरत्प्रीत्या तपसा नियमेन च ॥२६॥
26. sukanyāpi patiṁ labdhvā tapasvinamaninditā ,
nityaṁ paryacaratprītyā tapasā niyamena ca.
26. sukanyā api patim labdhvā tapasvinam aninditā
nityam paryacarat prītyā tapasā niyamena ca
26. Blameless Sukanyā, having obtained the ascetic as her husband, also constantly attended to him with love, austerity (tapas), and discipline.
अग्नीनामतिथीनां च शुश्रूषुरनसूयिका ।
समाराधयत क्षिप्रं च्यवनं सा शुभानना ॥२७॥
27. agnīnāmatithīnāṁ ca śuśrūṣuranasūyikā ,
samārādhayata kṣipraṁ cyavanaṁ sā śubhānanā.
27. agnīnām atithīnām ca śuśrūṣuḥ anasūyikā
samārādhayat kṣipram cyavanam sā śubhānanā
27. That beautiful-faced lady, free from envy, quickly and devotedly served Chyavana, the sacred fires, and the guests.
