महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-79, verse-10

पवित्रमग्र्यं जगतः प्रतिष्ठा दिवौकसां मातरोऽथाप्रमेयाः ।
अन्वालभेद्दक्षिणतो व्रजेच्च दद्याच्च पात्रे प्रसमीक्ष्य कालम् ॥१०॥
10. pavitramagryaṁ jagataḥ pratiṣṭhā; divaukasāṁ mātaro'thāprameyāḥ ,
anvālabheddakṣiṇato vrajecca; dadyācca pātre prasamīkṣya kālam.

10. They (cows) are the supreme purifiers, the support of the world, mothers of the gods, and immeasurable. One should touch them from the right (south), circumambulate them, and give (offerings) to a deserving person after carefully considering the proper time.
