लोमश उवाच ।
समुद्रं स समासाद्य वारुणिर्भगवानृषिः ।
उवाच सहितान्देवानृषींश्चैव समागतान् ॥१॥
1. lomaśa uvāca ,
samudraṁ sa samāsādya vāruṇirbhagavānṛṣiḥ ,
uvāca sahitāndevānṛṣīṁścaiva samāgatān.

ṛṣiḥ uvāca sahitan devān ṛṣīn ca eva samāgatān
1. Lomasa said: That divine sage (ṛṣi), son of Varuna, having approached the ocean, spoke to the assembled gods and sages.
एष लोकहितार्थं वै पिबामि वरुणालयम् ।
भवद्भिर्यदनुष्ठेयं तच्छीघ्रं संविधीयताम् ॥२॥
2. eṣa lokahitārthaṁ vai pibāmi varuṇālayam ,
bhavadbhiryadanuṣṭheyaṁ tacchīghraṁ saṁvidhīyatām.
2. eṣa lokahitārtham vai pibāmi varuṇālayam bhavadbhiḥ
yat anuṣṭheyam tat śīghram saṃvidhīyatām
2. I, indeed, for the welfare of the world, shall drink the abode of Varuna (the ocean). Therefore, whatever needs to be done by you should be quickly carried out.
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं मैत्रावरुणिरच्युतः ।
समुद्रमपिबत्क्रुद्धः सर्वलोकस्य पश्यतः ॥३॥
3. etāvaduktvā vacanaṁ maitrāvaruṇiracyutaḥ ,
samudramapibatkruddhaḥ sarvalokasya paśyataḥ.
3. etāvat uktvā vacanam maitrāvaruṇiḥ acyutaḥ
samudram apibat kruddhaḥ sarvalokasya paśyataḥ
3. Having spoken these words, the unwavering (achyuta) sage, Agastya, the son of Mitra and Varuṇa, angrily drank the entire ocean while all the beings watched.
पीयमानं समुद्रं तु दृष्ट्वा देवाः सवासवाः ।
विस्मयं परमं जग्मुः स्तुतिभिश्चाप्यपूजयन् ॥४॥
4. pīyamānaṁ samudraṁ tu dṛṣṭvā devāḥ savāsavāḥ ,
vismayaṁ paramaṁ jagmuḥ stutibhiścāpyapūjayan.
4. pīyamānam samudram tu dṛṣṭvā devāḥ savāsavāḥ
vismayam paramam jagmuḥ stutibhiḥ ca api apūjayan
4. Upon seeing the ocean being drunk, the gods, accompanied by Indra (Vasava), were filled with supreme astonishment and worshipped him with praises.
त्वं नस्त्राता विधाता च लोकानां लोकभावनः ।
त्वत्प्रसादात्समुच्छेदं न गच्छेत्सामरं जगत् ॥५॥
5. tvaṁ nastrātā vidhātā ca lokānāṁ lokabhāvanaḥ ,
tvatprasādātsamucchedaṁ na gacchetsāmaraṁ jagat.
5. tvam naḥ trātā vidhātā ca lokānām lokabhāvanaḥ
tvatprasādāt samucchedam na gacchet sāmaram jagat
5. You are our protector and the creator of the worlds, the sustainer of all beings. By your grace, the universe, along with the gods, will not meet with destruction.
संपूज्यमानस्त्रिदशैर्महात्मा गन्धर्वतूर्येषु नदत्सु सर्वशः ।
दिव्यैश्च पुष्पैरवकीर्यमाणो महार्णवं निःसलिलं चकार ॥६॥
6. saṁpūjyamānastridaśairmahātmā; gandharvatūryeṣu nadatsu sarvaśaḥ ,
divyaiśca puṣpairavakīryamāṇo; mahārṇavaṁ niḥsalilaṁ cakāra.
6. saṃpūjyamānaḥ tridaśaiḥ mahātmā
gandharvatūryeṣu nadatsu sarvaśaḥ
divyaiḥ ca puṣpaiḥ avakīryamāṇaḥ
mahārṇavam niḥsalilam cakāra
6. While Gandharva instruments resounded everywhere, and being showered with divine flowers, the great-souled one (mahātmā), who was being profoundly worshipped by the gods (tridaśa), rendered the vast ocean waterless.
दृष्ट्वा कृतं निःसलिलं महार्णवं सुराः समस्ताः परमप्रहृष्टाः ।
प्रगृह्य दिव्यानि वरायुधानि तान्दानवाञ्जघ्नुरदीनसत्त्वाः ॥७॥
7. dṛṣṭvā kṛtaṁ niḥsalilaṁ mahārṇavaṁ; surāḥ samastāḥ paramaprahṛṣṭāḥ ,
pragṛhya divyāni varāyudhāni; tāndānavāñjaghnuradīnasattvāḥ.
7. dṛṣṭvā kṛtam niḥsalilam mahārṇavam
surāḥ samastāḥ paramaprahṛṣṭāḥ
pragṛhya divyāni varāyudhāni
tān dānavān jaghnuḥ adīnasattvāḥ
7. Having seen the great ocean rendered waterless, all the gods became exceedingly joyful. Taking up their divine, excellent weapons, those high-spirited gods then struck down the Dānavas.
ते वध्यमानास्त्रिदशैर्महात्मभिर्महाबलैर्वेगिभिरुन्नदद्भिः ।
न सेहिरे वेगवतां महात्मनां वेगं तदा धारयितुं दिवौकसाम् ॥८॥
8. te vadhyamānāstridaśairmahātmabhi;rmahābalairvegibhirunnadadbhiḥ ,
na sehire vegavatāṁ mahātmanāṁ; vegaṁ tadā dhārayituṁ divaukasām.
8. te vadhyamānāḥ tridaśaiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
mahābalaiḥ vegibhiḥ unnadadbhiḥ
na sehire vegavatām mahātmanām
vegam tadā dhārayitum divaukasām
8. Being struck down by the great-souled, exceedingly powerful, swift, and roaring gods, those Dānavas then could not withstand the might of the swift and noble dwellers of heaven (divaukasām).
ते वध्यमानास्त्रिदशैर्दानवा भीमनिस्वनाः ।
चक्रुः सुतुमुलं युद्धं मुहूर्तमिव भारत ॥९॥
9. te vadhyamānāstridaśairdānavā bhīmanisvanāḥ ,
cakruḥ sutumulaṁ yuddhaṁ muhūrtamiva bhārata.
9. te vadhyamānāḥ tridaśaiḥ dānavāḥ bhīmanisvanāḥ
cakruḥ sutumulam yuddham muhūrtam iva bhārata
9. O Bhārata, those Dānavas, who were being slain by the gods, and whose roars were terrifying, engaged in an exceedingly fierce battle for a short while.
ते पूर्वं तपसा दग्धा मुनिभिर्भावितात्मभिः ।
यतमानाः परं शक्त्या त्रिदशैर्विनिषूदिताः ॥१०॥
10. te pūrvaṁ tapasā dagdhā munibhirbhāvitātmabhiḥ ,
yatamānāḥ paraṁ śaktyā tridaśairviniṣūditāḥ.
10. te pūrvam tapasā dagdhāḥ munibhiḥ bhāvitātmabhiḥ
yatamānāḥ param śaktyā tridaśaiḥ viniṣūditāḥ
10. Those Dānavas had been previously weakened by the spiritual austerities (tapas) of the sages (munibhiḥ) who possessed pure inner selves (ātman). Therefore, even while striving with great strength (śakti), they were utterly annihilated by the gods.
ते हेमनिष्काभरणाः कुण्डलाङ्गदधारिणः ।
निहत्य बह्वशोभन्त पुष्पिता इव किंशुकाः ॥११॥
11. te hemaniṣkābharaṇāḥ kuṇḍalāṅgadadhāriṇaḥ ,
nihatya bahvaśobhanta puṣpitā iva kiṁśukāḥ.
11. te hemaniṣkābharaṇāḥ kuṇḍalāṅgadadhāriṇaḥ
nihatya bahu aśobhanta puṣpitāḥ iva kiṃśukāḥ
11. Adorned with golden necklaces, wearing earrings and armlets, they (the victorious ones), after striking down many (foes), shone brilliantly like blossomed palash (kiṃśuka) trees.
हतशेषास्ततः केचित्कालेया मनुजोत्तम ।
विदार्य वसुधां देवीं पातालतलमाश्रिताः ॥१२॥
12. hataśeṣāstataḥ kecitkāleyā manujottama ,
vidārya vasudhāṁ devīṁ pātālatalamāśritāḥ.
12. hataśeṣāḥ tataḥ kecit kāleyāḥ manujottama
vidārya vasudhām devīm pātālatalam āśritāḥ
12. O best of men, thereafter some Kāleyas who remained from those slain, having split open the divine earth, took refuge in the nethermost realm (pātāla).
निहतान्दानवान्दृष्ट्वा त्रिदशा मुनिपुंगवम् ।
तुष्टुवुर्विविधैर्वाक्यैरिदं चैवाब्रुवन्वचः ॥१३॥
13. nihatāndānavāndṛṣṭvā tridaśā munipuṁgavam ,
tuṣṭuvurvividhairvākyairidaṁ caivābruvanvacaḥ.
13. nihatān dānavān dṛṣṭvā tridaśāḥ munipuṅgavam
tuṣṭuvuḥ vividhaiḥ vākyaiḥ idam ca eva abruvan vacaḥ
13. Having seen the slain Dānavas (demons), the gods praised the chief of sages with various words, and they also spoke these words.
त्वत्प्रसादान्महाभाग लोकैः प्राप्तं महत्सुखम् ।
त्वत्तेजसा च निहताः कालेयाः क्रूरविक्रमाः ॥१४॥
14. tvatprasādānmahābhāga lokaiḥ prāptaṁ mahatsukham ,
tvattejasā ca nihatāḥ kāleyāḥ krūravikramāḥ.
14. tvatprasādāt mahābhāga lokaiḥ prāptam mahat sukham
tvattejasā ca nihatāḥ kāleyāḥ krūravikramāḥ
14. O venerable one, by your grace, great happiness was attained by the worlds. And by your power (tejas), the Kāleyas, who possessed fierce might, were slain.
पूरयस्व महाबाहो समुद्रं लोकभावन ।
यत्त्वया सलिलं पीतं तदस्मिन्पुनरुत्सृज ॥१५॥
15. pūrayasva mahābāho samudraṁ lokabhāvana ,
yattvayā salilaṁ pītaṁ tadasminpunarutsṛja.
15. pūrayasva mahābāho samudram lokabhāvana yat
tvayā salilam pītam tat asmin punar utsṛja
15. O mighty-armed one, protector of the worlds, please fill the ocean. The water that you drank, release it back into this (ocean).
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच भगवान्मुनिपुंगवः ।
जीर्णं तद्धि मया तोयमुपायोऽन्यः प्रचिन्त्यताम् ।
पूरणार्थं समुद्रस्य भवद्भिर्यत्नमास्थितैः ॥१६॥
16. evamuktaḥ pratyuvāca bhagavānmunipuṁgavaḥ ,
jīrṇaṁ taddhi mayā toyamupāyo'nyaḥ pracintyatām ,
pūraṇārthaṁ samudrasya bhavadbhiryatnamāsthitaiḥ.
16. evam uktaḥ prati uvāca bhagavān
munipuṅgavaḥ jīrṇam tat hi mayā toyam
upāyaḥ anyaḥ pracityatām pūraṇārtham
samudrasya bhavadbhiḥ yatnam āsthitaiḥ
16. Addressed in this way, the venerable (bhagavān) chief among ascetics replied, 'Indeed, that water has been digested by me. Therefore, another means should be devised by you, who are making efforts to fill the ocean.'
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः ।
विस्मिताश्च विषण्णाश्च बभूवुः सहिताः सुराः ॥१७॥
17. etacchrutvā tu vacanaṁ maharṣerbhāvitātmanaḥ ,
vismitāśca viṣaṇṇāśca babhūvuḥ sahitāḥ surāḥ.
17. etat śrutvā tu vacanam maharṣeḥ bhāvitātmanaḥ
vismitāḥ ca viṣaṇṇāḥ ca babhūvuḥ sahitāḥ surāḥ
17. Indeed, after hearing these words from the great sage (maharṣi) whose soul (ātman) was purified, the gods, all together, became astonished and dejected.
परस्परमनुज्ञाप्य प्रणम्य मुनिपुंगवम् ।
प्रजाः सर्वा महाराज विप्रजग्मुर्यथागतम् ॥१८॥
18. parasparamanujñāpya praṇamya munipuṁgavam ,
prajāḥ sarvā mahārāja viprajagmuryathāgatam.
18. parasparam anujñāpya praṇamya munipuṅgavam
prajāḥ sarvāḥ mahārāja viprajagmuḥ yathā āgatam
18. After taking leave of each other and bowing down to the chief among ascetics, O great king, all the people departed the way they had arrived.
त्रिदशा विष्णुना सार्धमुपजग्मुः पितामहम् ।
पूरणार्थं समुद्रस्य मन्त्रयित्वा पुनः पुनः ।
ऊचुः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे सागरस्याभिपूरणम् ॥१९॥
19. tridaśā viṣṇunā sārdhamupajagmuḥ pitāmaham ,
pūraṇārthaṁ samudrasya mantrayitvā punaḥ punaḥ ,
ūcuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve sāgarasyābhipūraṇam.
19. tridaśāḥ viṣṇunā sārdham upajagmuḥ
pitāmaham pūraṇārtham samudrasya
mantrayitvā punaḥ punaḥ ūcuḥ
prāñjalayaḥ sarve sāgarasya abhipūraṇam
19. The gods, accompanied by Viṣṇu, approached Brahmā (pitāmaha). After repeatedly consulting about the purpose of filling the ocean, they all, with folded hands, spoke concerning the complete filling of the ocean.
