Thereupon, the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna) urged those excellent horses. Those steeds, driven by the lion among men (Arjuna) and swift as the wind, soared through the sky as if scraping it, adorned with golden harnesses.

Not much further, having proceeded, the son of Matsya (Uttara) and Dhananjaya (Arjuna), those destroyers of foes, observed the mighty army of the Kurus. Then, having approached the cremation ground, he (Arjuna) finally reached the Kurus.

And by Droṇa, accompanied by his son, a great archer and wise man. The son of Virāṭa (vairāṭi), with hair standing on end and agitated by fear, then spoke to Pārtha (Arjuna).

9.
I am unable to fight against the Kurus. Indeed, look at my hair standing on end (romaharṣa). I will not be able to fight back against this Kuru army (kurusainyam), which has many great heroes (bahupravīra), is extremely formidable, is invincible even by the gods, and is limitless (anantaka).

10.
I do not wish to engage with the Bhārata army, which consists of formidable archers, is thronged with chariots, elephants, and horses, and is densely packed with infantry and banners. Indeed, merely seeing these adversaries on the battlefield, my inner being (ātman) becomes distressed.

Also, there is the heroic King Duryodhana, the best among charioteers. All of them are illustrious great archers, skilled in warfare.

Indeed, merely seeing these Kurus, whose battle formations are arrayed and who are ready to strike, my body hairs have bristled, and bewilderment has overcome me.

Vaiśampāyana said: The dull-witted Uttara, though himself (currently) unscattered, laments over the scattering (of his forces), which he attributes to the foolishness of the rogue (Duryodhana), in the presence of Arjuna (Savyasācin) who is observing (the situation).

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having spoken thus, the son of Kunti (Arjuna) leapt down from the excellent chariot. Dhanañjaya then pursued the fleeing prince, shaking his long braid and his very red garments.

At that time, seeing him running and shaking his braid in that particular form, some soldiers laughed aloud, not knowing that it was Arjuna.

Having observed him (Arjuna) running swiftly, the Kurus asked, "Who is this person hidden in disguise, like a fire concealed by ashes?"

Some of his features are like a man's, and some are like a woman's. Indeed, his resemblance is like Arjuna's, yet he also maintains the form of a eunuch.

His head and neck are indeed just like that, and his two arms resemble maces. Similarly, his valor is exactly the same; this person is none other than Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).

32.
Among the immortals, he is like Devendra (Indra); among humans, he is Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). Who else in this world, acting alone, could approach us other than Dhanañjaya (Arjuna)?

33.
The single son of Virata, who remained in the empty city, has indeed come out, driven by childishness and not by true valor (pauruṣa).

34.
Uttara certainly went out of the city, having made Arjuna, who was indeed moving about hidden by his disguise, his charioteer.

“I think this Uttara, having seen our banners, is afraid and is fleeing. Surely, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) wishes to seize him as he runs.”

36.
Thus, all the Kauravas, deliberating individually, were unable to decide anything about Uttara, O Bhārata, after seeing that son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna) thus concealed by his disguise.

But Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), having swiftly pursued Uttara as he ran, went a hundred steps and quickly seized him by his lock of hair.

Then, the son of Virāṭa, seized by Arjuna, lamented profusely and piteously, as if in great distress.

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: As [the prince] was uttering such words, lamenting and bewildered, the tiger among men (Arjuna) laughed heartily and brought him near the chariot.

42.
Then Arjuna (Pārtha) spoke to him, who was tormented by fear and had lost his composure: "If you are unable to fight the enemies, O vanquisher of foes, then come and drive my horses while I engage in battle with them."

You, protected by the strength of my arms, proceed into this chariot division, which is most invincible, dreadful, and guarded by great warriors (mahārathas).

Arjuna (Bībhatsu), the undefeated one, speaking thus, consoled Uttara, the son of Virāṭa (Vairāṭi), for a moment, O best of Bharatas.

Then, Arjuna (Pārtha), the foremost among warriors, mounted him – struggling, unwilling, and afflicted by fear – onto the chariot.
