वैशंपायन उवाच ।
कृतविद्ये कचे प्राप्ते हृष्टरूपा दिवौकसः ।
कचादधीत्य तां विद्यां कृतार्था भरतर्षभ ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
kṛtavidye kace prāpte hṛṣṭarūpā divaukasaḥ ,
kacādadhītya tāṁ vidyāṁ kṛtārthā bharatarṣabha.

1. Vaiśampāyana said, "O best of the Bhāratas, when Kaca had completed his studies and returned, the celestial beings, filled with joy, felt their purpose accomplished after learning that knowledge from Kaca."
सर्व एव समागम्य शतक्रतुमथाब्रुवन् ।
कालस्ते विक्रमस्याद्य जहि शत्रून्पुरंदर ॥२॥
2. sarva eva samāgamya śatakratumathābruvan ,
kālaste vikramasyādya jahi śatrūnpuraṁdara.
2. sarva eva samāgamya śatakratum atha abruvan
kālaḥ te vikramasya adya jahi śatrūn purandara
2. All of them, having assembled, then said to Śatakratu (Indra), "O Purandara, now is the time for your valor! Slay the enemies!"
एवमुक्तस्तु सहितैस्त्रिदशैर्मघवांस्तदा ।
तथेत्युक्त्वोपचक्राम सोऽपश्यत वने स्त्रियः ॥३॥
3. evamuktastu sahitaistridaśairmaghavāṁstadā ,
tathetyuktvopacakrāma so'paśyata vane striyaḥ.
3. evam uktaḥ tu sahitaiḥ tridaśaiḥ maghavān tadā
tathā iti uktvā upacakrāma saḥ apaśyat vane striyaḥ
3. Thus addressed by the accompanying gods, Maghavan (Indra) then said, "So be it," and set forth. He saw women in the forest.
क्रीडन्तीनां तु कन्यानां वने चैत्ररथोपमे ।
वायुभूतः स वस्त्राणि सर्वाण्येव व्यमिश्रयत् ॥४॥
4. krīḍantīnāṁ tu kanyānāṁ vane caitrarathopame ,
vāyubhūtaḥ sa vastrāṇi sarvāṇyeva vyamiśrayat.
4. krīḍantīnām tu kanyānām vane caitrarathopame
vāyubhūtaḥ saḥ vastrāṇi sarvāṇi eva vyamiśrayat
4. In a forest similar to Caitraratha, while girls were playing, he transformed into wind and mixed up all their garments.
ततो जलात्समुत्तीर्य कन्यास्ताः सहितास्तदा ।
वस्त्राणि जगृहुस्तानि यथासन्नान्यनेकशः ॥५॥
5. tato jalātsamuttīrya kanyāstāḥ sahitāstadā ,
vastrāṇi jagṛhustāni yathāsannānyanekaśaḥ.
5. tataḥ jalāt samuttīrya kanyāḥ tāḥ sahitāḥ tadā
vastrāṇi jagṛhuḥ tāni yathāsannāni anekaśaḥ
5. Then, those girls, having emerged from the water, gathered together and took their garments, many of them picking up whatever was nearby.
तत्र वासो देवयान्याः शर्मिष्ठा जगृहे तदा ।
व्यतिमिश्रमजानन्ती दुहिता वृषपर्वणः ॥६॥
6. tatra vāso devayānyāḥ śarmiṣṭhā jagṛhe tadā ,
vyatimiśramajānantī duhitā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ.
6. tatra vāsaḥ devayānyāḥ śarmiṣṭhā jagṛhe tadā
vyatimiśram ajānantī duhitā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ
6. There, Sharmishtha then took Devayani's garment, unaware of the mix-up. She was the daughter of Vrishaparvan.
ततस्तयोर्मिथस्तत्र विरोधः समजायत ।
देवयान्याश्च राजेन्द्र शर्मिष्ठायाश्च तत्कृते ॥७॥
7. tatastayormithastatra virodhaḥ samajāyata ,
devayānyāśca rājendra śarmiṣṭhāyāśca tatkṛte.
7. tatas tayoḥ mithas tatra virodhaḥ samajāyata
devayānyāḥ ca rājendra śarmiṣṭhāyāḥ ca tatkṛte
7. Consequently, a mutual conflict arose there between them, O King, specifically between Devayani and Sharmishtha, on account of that incident.
देवयान्युवाच ।
कस्माद्गृह्णासि मे वस्त्रं शिष्या भूत्वा ममासुरि ।
समुदाचारहीनाया न ते श्रेयो भविष्यति ॥८॥
8. devayānyuvāca ,
kasmādgṛhṇāsi me vastraṁ śiṣyā bhūtvā mamāsuri ,
samudācārahīnāyā na te śreyo bhaviṣyati.
8. devayānī uvāca kasmāt gṛhṇāsi me vastram śiṣyā bhūtvā
mama asuri samudācārahīnāyāḥ na te śreyaḥ bhaviṣyati
8. Devayani said: "Why do you take my garment, you demoness, when you are supposed to be my disciple? For one so devoid of good conduct, there will be no good fortune for you."
शर्मिष्ठोवाच ।
आसीनं च शयानं च पिता ते पितरं मम ।
स्तौति वन्दति चाभीक्ष्णं नीचैः स्थित्वा विनीतवत् ॥९॥
9. śarmiṣṭhovāca ,
āsīnaṁ ca śayānaṁ ca pitā te pitaraṁ mama ,
stauti vandati cābhīkṣṇaṁ nīcaiḥ sthitvā vinītavat.
9. śarmiṣṭhā uvāca āsīnam ca śayānam ca pitā te pitaram mama
stauti vandati ca abhīkṣṇam nīcaiḥ sthitvā vinītavat
9. Sharmishtha said: "Your father, whether sitting or lying down, always praises and bows to my father, standing humbly and respectfully."
याचतस्त्वं हि दुहिता स्तुवतः प्रतिगृह्णतः ।
सुताहं स्तूयमानस्य ददतोऽप्रतिगृह्णतः ॥१०॥
10. yācatastvaṁ hi duhitā stuvataḥ pratigṛhṇataḥ ,
sutāhaṁ stūyamānasya dadato'pratigṛhṇataḥ.
10. yācataḥ tvam hi duhitā stuvataḥ pratigṛhṇataḥ
sutā aham stūyamānasya dadataḥ apratigṛhṇataḥ
10. Indeed, you are the daughter of one who begs, praises, and receives. I, however, am the daughter of one who is praised, gives, and does not receive.
अनायुधा सायुधाया रिक्ता क्षुभ्यसि भिक्षुकि ।
लप्स्यसे प्रतियोद्धारं न हि त्वां गणयाम्यहम् ॥११॥
11. anāyudhā sāyudhāyā riktā kṣubhyasi bhikṣuki ,
lapsyase pratiyoddhāraṁ na hi tvāṁ gaṇayāmyaham.
11. anāyudhā sāyudhāyāḥ riktā kṣubhyasi bhikṣuki
lapsyase pratiyoddhāram na hi tvām gaṇayāmi aham
11. O beggar woman, unarmed and empty-handed, you become agitated against an armed person. You will find an adversary, but I do not consider you (worth counting).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
समुच्छ्रयं देवयानीं गतां सक्तां च वाससि ।
शर्मिष्ठा प्राक्षिपत्कूपे ततः स्वपुरमाव्रजत् ॥१२॥
12. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
samucchrayaṁ devayānīṁ gatāṁ saktāṁ ca vāsasi ,
śarmiṣṭhā prākṣipatkūpe tataḥ svapuramāvrajat.
12. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca samucchrayam devayānīm gatām saktām
ca vāsasi śarmiṣṭhā prākṣipat kūpe tataḥ svapuram āvrajat
12. Vaiśampāyana said: Sharmishtha threw Devayani, who had attained a high position and was entangled in her garment, into a well, and then returned to her own city.
हतेयमिति विज्ञाय शर्मिष्ठा पापनिश्चया ।
अनवेक्ष्य ययौ वेश्म क्रोधवेगपरायणा ॥१३॥
13. hateyamiti vijñāya śarmiṣṭhā pāpaniścayā ,
anavekṣya yayau veśma krodhavegaparāyaṇā.
13. hatā iyam iti vijñāya śarmiṣṭhā pāpaniścayā
anavekṣya yayau veśman krodhavegaparāyaṇā
13. Having resolved upon evil, Sharmishtha concluded, 'She is killed,' and, overcome by a surge of anger, she departed for her home without looking back.
अथ तं देशमभ्यागाद्ययातिर्नहुषात्मजः ।
श्रान्तयुग्यः श्रान्तहयो मृगलिप्सुः पिपासितः ॥१४॥
14. atha taṁ deśamabhyāgādyayātirnahuṣātmajaḥ ,
śrāntayugyaḥ śrāntahayo mṛgalipsuḥ pipāsitaḥ.
14. atha tam deśam abhyāgāt yayātiḥ nahuṣātmajaḥ
śrāntayugyaḥ śrāntahayaḥ mṛgalipsuḥ pipāsitaḥ
14. Then Yayāti, son of Nahuṣa, approached that place. His yoked animals were weary, his horses were weary, and he was thirsty, seeking game.
स नाहुषः प्रेक्षमाण उदपानं गतोदकम् ।
ददर्श कन्यां तां तत्र दीप्तामग्निशिखामिव ॥१५॥
15. sa nāhuṣaḥ prekṣamāṇa udapānaṁ gatodakam ,
dadarśa kanyāṁ tāṁ tatra dīptāmagniśikhāmiva.
15. saḥ nāhuṣaḥ prekṣamāṇaḥ udapānam gatodakam
dadarśa kanyām tām tatra dīptām agniśikhām iva
15. That son of Nahuṣa, looking around, saw a well from which the water had gone. There, he beheld that maiden, shining like a flame of fire.
तामपृच्छत्स दृष्ट्वैव कन्याममरवर्णिनीम् ।
सान्त्वयित्वा नृपश्रेष्ठः साम्ना परमवल्गुना ॥१६॥
16. tāmapṛcchatsa dṛṣṭvaiva kanyāmamaravarṇinīm ,
sāntvayitvā nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ sāmnā paramavalgunā.
16. tām apṛcchat saḥ dṛṣṭvā eva kanyām amaravarṇinīm
sāntvayitvā nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ sāmnā paramavalgunā
16. The best of kings, upon seeing that girl, who possessed the beauty of a celestial nymph, immediately consoled her with exceedingly gentle words and then questioned her.
का त्वं ताम्रनखी श्यामा सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डला ।
दीर्घं ध्यायसि चात्यर्थं कस्माच्छ्वसिषि चातुरा ॥१७॥
17. kā tvaṁ tāmranakhī śyāmā sumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalā ,
dīrghaṁ dhyāyasi cātyarthaṁ kasmācchvasiṣi cāturā.
17. kā tvam tāmranakhī śyāmā sumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalā dīrgham
dhyāyasi ca atyartham kasmāt śvasisi ca āturā
17. Who are you, with your copper-red nails, dark complexion, and brightly polished jewel earrings? Why do you ponder so deeply and sigh excessively, looking so distressed?
कथं च पतितास्यस्मिन्कूपे वीरुत्तृणावृते ।
दुहिता चैव कस्य त्वं वद सर्वं सुमध्यमे ॥१८॥
18. kathaṁ ca patitāsyasminkūpe vīruttṛṇāvṛte ,
duhitā caiva kasya tvaṁ vada sarvaṁ sumadhyame.
18. katham ca patitā asi asmin kūpe vīruttṛṇāvṛte
duhitā ca eva kasya tvam vada sarvam sumadhyame
18. And how did you fall into this well, which is covered with creepers and grass? Whose daughter are you? O slender-waisted one, tell me everything!
देवयान्युवाच ।
योऽसौ देवैर्हतान्दैत्यानुत्थापयति विद्यया ।
तस्य शुक्रस्य कन्याहं स मां नूनं न बुध्यते ॥१९॥
19. devayānyuvāca ,
yo'sau devairhatāndaityānutthāpayati vidyayā ,
tasya śukrasya kanyāhaṁ sa māṁ nūnaṁ na budhyate.
19. devayānī uvāca yaḥ asau devaiḥ hatān daityān utthāpayati
vidyayā tasya śukrasya kanyā aham saḥ mām nūnam na budhyate
19. Devayani said: 'I am the daughter of that Shukra, who, by his knowledge, revives the asuras slain by the gods. Surely, he is not aware of my current state.'
एष मे दक्षिणो राजन्पाणिस्ताम्रनखाङ्गुलिः ।
समुद्धर गृहीत्वा मां कुलीनस्त्वं हि मे मतः ॥२०॥
20. eṣa me dakṣiṇo rājanpāṇistāmranakhāṅguliḥ ,
samuddhara gṛhītvā māṁ kulīnastvaṁ hi me mataḥ.
20. eṣaḥ me dakṣiṇaḥ rājan pāṇiḥ tāmranakhāṅguliḥ
samuddhara gṛhītvā mām kulīnaḥ tvam hi me mataḥ
20. O King, this is my right hand with its copper-red nails and fingers. Please grasp it and lift me out, for I consider you to be of noble lineage.
जानामि हि त्वां संशान्तं वीर्यवन्तं यशस्विनम् ।
तस्मान्मां पतितामस्मात्कूपादुद्धर्तुमर्हसि ॥२१॥
21. jānāmi hi tvāṁ saṁśāntaṁ vīryavantaṁ yaśasvinam ,
tasmānmāṁ patitāmasmātkūpāduddhartumarhasi.
21. jānāmi hi tvām saṃśāntam vīryavantam yaśasvinam
tasmāt mām patitām asmāt kūpāt uddhartum arhasi
21. I indeed know you to be tranquil, mighty, and glorious. Therefore, you should rescue me, who has fallen into this well.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तामथ ब्राह्मणीं स्त्रीं च विज्ञाय नहुषात्मजः ।
गृहीत्वा दक्षिणे पाणावुज्जहार ततोऽवटात् ॥२२॥
22. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tāmatha brāhmaṇīṁ strīṁ ca vijñāya nahuṣātmajaḥ ,
gṛhītvā dakṣiṇe pāṇāvujjahāra tato'vaṭāt.
22. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca tām atha brāhmaṇīm strīm ca vijñāya
nahuṣātmajaḥ gṛhītvā dakṣiṇe pāṇau ujjahāra tataḥ avaṭāt
22. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, recognizing her as a Brahmin woman, Nahuṣa's son (Yayāti) took her right hand and lifted her out of that well.
उद्धृत्य चैनां तरसा तस्मात्कूपान्नराधिपः ।
आमन्त्रयित्वा सुश्रोणीं ययातिः स्वपुरं ययौ ॥२३॥
23. uddhṛtya caināṁ tarasā tasmātkūpānnarādhipaḥ ,
āmantrayitvā suśroṇīṁ yayātiḥ svapuraṁ yayau.
23. uddhṛtya ca enām tarasā tasmāt kūpāt narādhipaḥ
āmantrayitvā suśroṇīm yayātiḥ svapuram yayau
23. And after quickly pulling her out of that well, King Yayāti, having addressed the beautiful lady, went to his own city.
देवयान्युवाच ।
त्वरितं घूर्णिके गच्छ सर्वमाचक्ष्व मे पितुः ।
नेदानीं हि प्रवक्ष्यामि नगरं वृषपर्वणः ॥२४॥
24. devayānyuvāca ,
tvaritaṁ ghūrṇike gaccha sarvamācakṣva me pituḥ ,
nedānīṁ hi pravakṣyāmi nagaraṁ vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ.
24. devayānī uvāca tvaritam ghūrṇike gaccha sarvam ācakṣva
me pituḥ na idānīm hi pravakṣyāmi nagaram vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ
24. Devayānī said: 'Ghūrṇikā, go quickly and tell my father everything. For I will certainly not enter Vṛṣaparvan's city now.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
सा तु वै त्वरितं गत्वा घूर्णिकासुरमन्दिरम् ।
दृष्ट्वा काव्यमुवाचेदं संभ्रमाविष्टचेतना ॥२५॥
25. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sā tu vai tvaritaṁ gatvā ghūrṇikāsuramandiram ,
dṛṣṭvā kāvyamuvācedaṁ saṁbhramāviṣṭacetanā.
25. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca sā tu vai tvaritam gatvā ghūrṇikā
asuramandiram dṛṣṭvā kāvyam uvāca idam saṃbhramāviṣṭacetanā
25. Vaiśampāyana said: But Ghūrṇikā, her mind filled with agitation, quickly went to the Asura's palace and, having seen Kāvya (Śukra), spoke this.
आचक्षे ते महाप्राज्ञ देवयानी वने हता ।
शर्मिष्ठया महाभाग दुहित्रा वृषपर्वणः ॥२६॥
26. ācakṣe te mahāprājña devayānī vane hatā ,
śarmiṣṭhayā mahābhāga duhitrā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ.
26. ācakṣe te mahāprājña devayānī vane hatā
śarmiṣṭhayā mahābhāga duhitrā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ
26. O greatly wise one, I tell you that Devayani was assaulted in the forest by Sharmishtha, the daughter of Vrishaparvan, O greatly fortunate one.
श्रुत्वा दुहितरं काव्यस्तत्र शर्मिष्ठया हताम् ।
त्वरया निर्ययौ दुःखान्मार्गमाणः सुतां वने ॥२७॥
27. śrutvā duhitaraṁ kāvyastatra śarmiṣṭhayā hatām ,
tvarayā niryayau duḥkhānmārgamāṇaḥ sutāṁ vane.
27. śrutvā duhitaram kāvyaḥ tatra śarmiṣṭhayā hatām
tvarayā niryayau duḥkhāt mārgamāṇaḥ sutām vane
27. Having heard that his daughter had been assaulted there by Sharmishtha, Kavya (Shukra), distressed, quickly departed, searching for his daughter in the forest.
दृष्ट्वा दुहितरं काव्यो देवयानीं ततो वने ।
बाहुभ्यां संपरिष्वज्य दुःखितो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२८॥
28. dṛṣṭvā duhitaraṁ kāvyo devayānīṁ tato vane ,
bāhubhyāṁ saṁpariṣvajya duḥkhito vākyamabravīt.
28. dṛṣṭvā duhitaram kāvyaḥ devayānīm tataḥ vane
bāhubhyām saṃpariṣvajya duḥkhitaḥ vākyam abravīt
28. Having then seen his daughter Devayani in the forest, Kavya, distressed, embraced her with both arms and spoke these words.
आत्मदोषैर्नियच्छन्ति सर्वे दुःखसुखे जनाः ।
मन्ये दुश्चरितं तेऽस्ति यस्येयं निष्कृतिः कृता ॥२९॥
29. ātmadoṣairniyacchanti sarve duḥkhasukhe janāḥ ,
manye duścaritaṁ te'sti yasyeyaṁ niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā.
29. ātma-doṣaiḥ niyacchanti sarve duḥkha-sukhe janāḥ
manye duścaritam te asti yasya iyam niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā
29. All people themselves bring about their joy and sorrow through their own faults. I believe that you must have committed some misconduct, for which this is the retribution.
देवयान्युवाच ।
निष्कृतिर्मेऽस्तु वा मास्तु शृणुष्वावहितो मम ।
शर्मिष्ठया यदुक्तास्मि दुहित्रा वृषपर्वणः ।
सत्यं किलैतत्सा प्राह दैत्यानामसि गायनः ॥३०॥
30. devayānyuvāca ,
niṣkṛtirme'stu vā māstu śṛṇuṣvāvahito mama ,
śarmiṣṭhayā yaduktāsmi duhitrā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ,
satyaṁ kilaitatsā prāha daityānāmasi gāyanaḥ.
30. devayānī uvāca niṣkṛtiḥ me astu vā mā
astu śṛṇuṣva avahitaḥ mama śarmiṣṭhayā
yat uktā asmi duhitrā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ satyam
kila etad sā prāha daityānām asi gāyanaḥ
30. Devayani said: 'Let there be retribution for me or not, but listen to me attentively about what Sharmishtha, the daughter of Vrishaparvan, said to me. She truly declared this: "You are merely the preceptor (singer/praise-singer) of the Daityas!"'
एवं हि मे कथयति शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी ।
वचनं तीक्ष्णपरुषं क्रोधरक्तेक्षणा भृशम् ॥३१॥
31. evaṁ hi me kathayati śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī ,
vacanaṁ tīkṣṇaparuṣaṁ krodharaktekṣaṇā bhṛśam.
31. evam hi me kathayati śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī
vacanam tīkṣṇaparuṣam krodharaktekṣaṇā bhṛśam
31. Indeed, Sharmishtha, the daughter of Vrishaparvan, spoke such exceedingly sharp and harsh words to me, her eyes greatly red with anger.
स्तुवतो दुहिता हि त्वं याचतः प्रतिगृह्णतः ।
सुताहं स्तूयमानस्य ददतोऽप्रतिगृह्णतः ॥३२॥
32. stuvato duhitā hi tvaṁ yācataḥ pratigṛhṇataḥ ,
sutāhaṁ stūyamānasya dadato'pratigṛhṇataḥ.
32. stuvataḥ duhitā hi tvam yācataḥ pratigṛhṇataḥ
sutā aham stūyamānasya dadataḥ apratigṛhṇataḥ
32. Indeed, you are the daughter of one who praises, begs, and accepts gifts. I am the daughter of one who is praised, gives, and does not accept gifts.
इति मामाह शर्मिष्ठा दुहिता वृषपर्वणः ।
क्रोधसंरक्तनयना दर्पपूर्णा पुनः पुनः ॥३३॥
33. iti māmāha śarmiṣṭhā duhitā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ,
krodhasaṁraktanayanā darpapūrṇā punaḥ punaḥ.
33. iti mā āha śarmiṣṭhā duhitā vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ
krodhasaṃraktanayanā darpapūrṇā punaḥ punaḥ
33. Thus, Sharmishtha, the daughter of Vrishaparvan, said to me again and again, her eyes completely red with anger and filled with pride.
यद्यहं स्तुवतस्तात दुहिता प्रतिगृह्णतः ।
प्रसादयिष्ये शर्मिष्ठामित्युक्ता हि सखी मया ॥३४॥
34. yadyahaṁ stuvatastāta duhitā pratigṛhṇataḥ ,
prasādayiṣye śarmiṣṭhāmityuktā hi sakhī mayā.
34. yat yadi aham stuvataḥ tāta duhitā pratigṛhṇataḥ
prasādayiṣye śarmiṣṭhām iti uktā hi sakhī mayā
34. O father, I said to my friend (Sharmishtha): 'If I am indeed the daughter of one who praises and accepts gifts, then I will appease Sharmishtha.' Indeed, these words were spoken by me.
शुक्र उवाच ।
स्तुवतो दुहिता न त्वं भद्रे न प्रतिगृह्णतः ।
अस्तोतुः स्तूयमानस्य दुहिता देवयान्यसि ॥३५॥
35. śukra uvāca ,
stuvato duhitā na tvaṁ bhadre na pratigṛhṇataḥ ,
astotuḥ stūyamānasya duhitā devayānyasi.
35. śukra uvāca stuvataḥ duhitā na tvam bhadre na
pratigṛhṇataḥ astotuḥ stūyamānasya duhitā devayānī asi
35. Shukra said: "O good lady, you are not the daughter of one who praises or accepts gifts. You are Devayani, the daughter of one who does not praise (others) but is praised."
वृषपर्वैव तद्वेद शक्रो राजा च नाहुषः ।
अचिन्त्यं ब्रह्म निर्द्वन्द्वमैश्वरं हि बलं मम ॥३६॥
36. vṛṣaparvaiva tadveda śakro rājā ca nāhuṣaḥ ,
acintyaṁ brahma nirdvandvamaiśvaraṁ hi balaṁ mama.

36. Only Vrishaparva, King Nahusha, and Indra truly comprehend that my divine power is indeed inconceivable, Brahman, and free from duality.
