संजय उवाच ।
धर्मराजस्य तद्वाक्यं निशम्य शिनिपुंगवः ।
पार्थाच्च भयमाशङ्कन्परित्यागान्महीपतेः ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
dharmarājasya tadvākyaṁ niśamya śinipuṁgavaḥ ,
pārthācca bhayamāśaṅkanparityāgānmahīpateḥ.

1. Sanjaya said: Having heard that statement from the King of Righteousness (Dharmarāja), Satyakī, the foremost among the Śinis, apprehended fear from Arjuna and from being forsaken by the king.
अपवादं ह्यात्मनश्च लोकाद्रक्षन्विशेषतः ।
न मां भीत इति ब्रूयुरायान्तं फल्गुनं प्रति ॥२॥
2. apavādaṁ hyātmanaśca lokādrakṣanviśeṣataḥ ,
na māṁ bhīta iti brūyurāyāntaṁ phalgunaṁ prati.
2. apavādam hi ātmanaḥ ca lokāt rakṣan viśeṣataḥ na
mām bhītaḥ iti brūyuḥ āyāntam phalgunam prati
2. hi viśeṣataḥ lokāt ātmanaḥ apavādam rakṣan na
mām bhītaḥ iti brūyuḥ phalgunam āyāntam prati
2. ...and indeed, especially protecting his own reputation (ātman) from public reproach, lest they (people) say, "He is afraid," regarding Phalguna (Arjuna) who is approaching.
निश्चित्य बहुधैवं स सात्यकिर्युद्धदुर्मदः ।
धर्मराजमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्पुरुषर्षभ ॥३॥
3. niścitya bahudhaivaṁ sa sātyakiryuddhadurmadaḥ ,
dharmarājamidaṁ vākyamabravītpuruṣarṣabha.
3. niścitya bahudhā evam saḥ sātyakiḥ yuddhadurmadaḥ
dharmarājam idam vākyam abravīt puruṣarṣabha
3. saḥ sātyakiḥ yuddhadurmadaḥ evam bahudhā niścitya
dharmarājam puruṣarṣabha idam vākyam abravīt
3. Having thus considered in many ways, that Satyakī, fierce in battle, said this statement to the King of Righteousness (Dharmarāja), O best of men (puruṣarṣabha).
कृतां चेन्मन्यसे रक्षां स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु विशां पते ।
अनुयास्यामि बीभत्सुं करिष्ये वचनं तव ॥४॥
4. kṛtāṁ cenmanyase rakṣāṁ svasti te'stu viśāṁ pate ,
anuyāsyāmi bībhatsuṁ kariṣye vacanaṁ tava.
4. kṛtām cet manyase rakṣām svasti te astu viśām
pate anuyāsyāmi bībhatsum kariṣye vacanam tava
4. viśām pate cet manyase kṛtām rakṣām te svasti
astu bībhatsum anuyāsyāmi tava vacanam kariṣye
4. "O Lord of the people (viśām pate)! If you consider (my task of) protection accomplished, then may there be well-being to you. I will follow Bibhatsu (Arjuna) and carry out your command."
न हि मे पाण्डवात्कश्चित्त्रिषु लोकेषु विद्यते ।
यो वै प्रियतरो राजन्सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥५॥
5. na hi me pāṇḍavātkaścittriṣu lokeṣu vidyate ,
yo vai priyataro rājansatyametadbravīmi te.
5. na hi me pāṇḍavāt kaścit triṣu lokeṣu vidyate
yaḥ vai priyataraḥ rājan satyam etat bravīmi te
5. rājan,
me triṣu lokeṣu pāṇḍavāt kaścit yaḥ vai priyataraḥ na hi vidyate.
te etat satyam bravīmi.
5. Indeed, there is no one among the Pāṇḍavas who is dearer to me in the three worlds, O King. I speak this truth to you.
तस्याहं पदवीं यास्ये संदेशात्तव मानद ।
त्वत्कृते न च मे किंचिदकर्तव्यं कथंचन ॥६॥
6. tasyāhaṁ padavīṁ yāsye saṁdeśāttava mānada ,
tvatkṛte na ca me kiṁcidakartavyaṁ kathaṁcana.
6. tasya aham padavīm yāsye sandeśāt tava mānada
tvatkṛte na ca me kiñcit akartavyam kathaṃcana
6. mānada,
aham tava sandeśāt tasya padavīm yāsye.
ca tvatkṛte me kiñcit akartavyam kathaṃcana na.
6. O giver of honor (mānada), I will follow his path because of your message. Furthermore, there is nothing that I consider undone (akartavyam) for your sake, under any circumstances.
यथा हि मे गुरोर्वाक्यं विशिष्टं द्विपदां वर ।
तथा तवापि वचनं विशिष्टतरमेव मे ॥७॥
7. yathā hi me gurorvākyaṁ viśiṣṭaṁ dvipadāṁ vara ,
tathā tavāpi vacanaṁ viśiṣṭatarameva me.
7. yathā hi me guroḥ vākyam viśiṣṭam dvipadām vara
tathā tava api vacanam viśiṣṭataram eva me
7. dvipadām vara,
yathā hi me guroḥ vākyam viśiṣṭam,
tathā tava वचनम् api me viśiṣṭataram eva.
7. Indeed, O best among bipeds, just as the word of my teacher (guru) is pre-eminent, so too your word is even more pre-eminent to me.
प्रिये हि तव वर्तेते भ्रातरौ कृष्णपाण्डवौ ।
तयोः प्रिये स्थितं चैव विद्धि मां राजपुंगव ॥८॥
8. priye hi tava vartete bhrātarau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau ,
tayoḥ priye sthitaṁ caiva viddhi māṁ rājapuṁgava.
8. priye hi tava vartete bhrātarau kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau
tayoḥ priye sthitam ca eva viddhi mām rājapuṅgava
8. rājapuṅgava,
hi tava kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau bhrātarau prīye vartete.
ca eva tayoḥ priye sthitam mām viddhi.
8. Indeed, the two brothers, Kṛṣṇa and the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), are dear to you. Moreover, O bull among kings (rājapuṅgava), know that I am established in what is dear to both of them.
तवाज्ञां शिरसा गृह्य पाण्डवार्थमहं प्रभो ।
भित्त्वेदं दुर्भिदं सैन्यं प्रयास्ये नरसत्तम ॥९॥
9. tavājñāṁ śirasā gṛhya pāṇḍavārthamahaṁ prabho ,
bhittvedaṁ durbhidaṁ sainyaṁ prayāsye narasattama.
9. tava ājñām śirasā gṛhya pāṇḍava-artham aham prabho
bhittvā idam durbhidam sainyam prayāsye nara-sattama
9. prabho narasattama! aham tava ājñām śirasā gṛhya,
pāṇḍavārtham idam durbhidam sainyam bhittvā prayāsye
9. O Lord (prabho), O best among men (narasattama), I will accept your command upon my head and, for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas, proceed to pierce this army, which is difficult to breach.
द्रोणानीकं विशाम्येष क्रुद्धो झष इवार्णवम् ।
तत्र यास्यामि यत्रासौ राजन्राजा जयद्रथः ॥१०॥
10. droṇānīkaṁ viśāmyeṣa kruddho jhaṣa ivārṇavam ,
tatra yāsyāmi yatrāsau rājanrājā jayadrathaḥ.
10. droṇa-anīkam viśāmi eṣa kruddhaḥ jhaṣaḥ iva arṇavam
tatra yāsyāmi yatra asau rājan rājā jayadrathaḥ
10. eṣa kruddhaḥ jhaṣaḥ arṇavam iva,
droṇānīkam viśāmi.
rājan! asau rājā jayadrathaḥ yatra tatra yāsyāmi
10. Like an enraged fish entering the ocean, I shall penetrate Drona's army. O King (rājan), I will go to where that King Jayadratha is.
यत्र सेनां समाश्रित्य भीतस्तिष्ठति पाण्डवात् ।
गुप्तो रथवरश्रेष्ठैर्द्रौणिकर्णकृपादिभिः ॥११॥
11. yatra senāṁ samāśritya bhītastiṣṭhati pāṇḍavāt ,
gupto rathavaraśreṣṭhairdrauṇikarṇakṛpādibhiḥ.
11. yatra senām sam-āśritya bhītaḥ tiṣṭhati pāṇḍavāt
guptaḥ ratha-vara-śreṣṭhaiḥ drauṇi-karṇa-kṛpa-ādi-bhiḥ
11. yatra pāṇḍavāt bhītaḥ [san],
senām samāśritya,
drauṇikarṇakṛpādibhiḥ rathavaraśreṣṭhaiḥ guptaḥ [san] tiṣṭhati
11. Where he remains, frightened of the Pāṇḍavas, having taken refuge in the army, and protected by the best of charioteers such as Droṇi (Aśvatthāmā), Karṇa, Kṛpa, and others.
इतस्त्रियोजनं मन्ये तमध्वानं विशां पते ।
यत्र तिष्ठति पार्थोऽसौ जयद्रथवधोद्यतः ॥१२॥
12. itastriyojanaṁ manye tamadhvānaṁ viśāṁ pate ,
yatra tiṣṭhati pārtho'sau jayadrathavadhodyataḥ.
12. itaḥ tri-yojanam manye tam adhvānam viśām pate
yatra tiṣṭhati pārthaḥ asau jayadratha-vadha-udyataḥ
12. viśām pate! itaḥ [sakāśāt] tam adhvānam triyojanam manye,
yatra asau jayadrathavadhodyataḥ pārthaḥ tiṣṭhati
12. O Lord of the people (viśāṃ pate), I consider that distance to be three yojanas from here, where Arjuna (pārthaḥ) stands, intent on the slaying of Jayadratha.
त्रियोजनगतस्यापि तस्य यास्याम्यहं पदम् ।
आसैन्धववधाद्राजन्सुदृढेनान्तरात्मना ॥१३॥
13. triyojanagatasyāpi tasya yāsyāmyahaṁ padam ,
āsaindhavavadhādrājansudṛḍhenāntarātmanā.
13. triyojanagatasya api tasya yāsyāmi aham padam |
ā-saindhava-vadhāt rājan su-dṛḍhena antarātmanā
13. rājan,
aham triyojanagatasya api tasya padam yāsyāmi,
ā-saindhava-vadhāt su-dṛḍhena antarātmanā
13. O King, even if he has gone three yojanas away, I will go to his location, with a very firm inner spirit (antarātman), until the killing of Saindhava.
अनादिष्टस्तु गुरुणा को नु युध्येत मानवः ।
आदिष्टस्तु त्वया राजन्को न युध्येत मादृशः ।
अभिजानामि तं देशं यत्र यास्याम्यहं प्रभो ॥१४॥
14. anādiṣṭastu guruṇā ko nu yudhyeta mānavaḥ ,
ādiṣṭastu tvayā rājanko na yudhyeta mādṛśaḥ ,
abhijānāmi taṁ deśaṁ yatra yāsyāmyahaṁ prabho.
14. anādiṣṭaḥ tu guruṇā kaḥ nu yudhyeta
mānavaḥ | ādiṣṭaḥ tu tvayā rājan
kaḥ na yudhyeta mādṛśaḥ | abhijānāmi
tam deśam yatra yāsyāmi aham prabho
14. guruṇā anādiṣṭaḥ mānavaḥ kaḥ nu yudhyeta? rājan,
tvayā ādiṣṭaḥ mādṛśaḥ kaḥ na yudhyeta? prabho,
aham tam deśam abhijānāmi yatra yāsyāmi.
14. Who among human beings would fight without being commanded by a teacher (guru)? But, O King, who like me would not fight when commanded by you? O Lord, I know well that place where I will go.
हुडशक्तिगदाप्रासखड्गचर्मर्ष्टितोमरम् ।
इष्वस्त्रवरसंबाधं क्षोभयिष्ये बलार्णवम् ॥१५॥
15. huḍaśaktigadāprāsakhaḍgacarmarṣṭitomaram ,
iṣvastravarasaṁbādhaṁ kṣobhayiṣye balārṇavam.
15. huḍa-śakti-gadā-prāsa-khaḍga-carma-ṛṣṭi-tomaram |
iṣu-astra-vara-saṃbādham kṣobhayiṣye bala-arṇavam
15. aham huḍa-śakti-gadā-prāsa-khaḍga-carma-ṛṣṭi-tomaram iṣu-astra-vara-saṃbādham bala-arṇavam kṣobhayiṣye.
15. I will churn this ocean of armies, which is crowded with spears, śaktis (lances), maces, javelins, swords, shields, ṛṣṭis (spears), and tomara (iron clubs), and densely packed with excellent arrows and missiles.
यदेतत्कुञ्जरानीकं साहस्रमनुपश्यसि ।
कुलमञ्जनकं नाम यत्रैते वीर्यशालिनः ॥१६॥
16. yadetatkuñjarānīkaṁ sāhasramanupaśyasi ,
kulamañjanakaṁ nāma yatraite vīryaśālinaḥ.
16. yat etat kuñjara-anīkam sāhasram anupaśyasi
| kulam añjanakam nāma yatra ete vīryaśālinaḥ
16. yat etat sāhasram kuñjara-anīkam anupaśyasi,
(tat) añjanakam nāma kulam yatra ete vīryaśālinaḥ.
16. That elephant army of a thousand (elephants) which you see belongs to the lineage named Añjanaka, and these (elephants) are powerful.
आस्थिता बहुभिर्म्लेच्छैर्युद्धशौण्डैः प्रहारिभिः ।
नागा मेघनिभा राजन्क्षरन्त इव तोयदाः ॥१७॥
17. āsthitā bahubhirmlecchairyuddhaśauṇḍaiḥ prahāribhiḥ ,
nāgā meghanibhā rājankṣaranta iva toyadāḥ.
17. āsthitāḥ bahubhiḥ mlecchaiḥ yuddhaśauṇḍaiḥ prahāribhiḥ
nāgāḥ meghanibhāḥ rājan kṣarantaḥ iva toyadāḥ
17. rājan,
bahubhiḥ yuddhaśauṇḍaiḥ prahāribhiḥ mlecchaiḥ āsthitāḥ,
meghanibhāḥ nāgāḥ toyadāḥ iva kṣarantaḥ (dṛśyante).
17. O King, these elephants (nāgāḥ), mounted by many foreign warriors (mlecchaiḥ) who are fierce in battle and expert attackers, resemble clouds appearing as if they are pouring down rain-clouds.
नैते जातु निवर्तेरन्प्रेषिता हस्तिसादिभिः ।
अन्यत्र हि वधादेषां नास्ति राजन्पराजयः ॥१८॥
18. naite jātu nivarteranpreṣitā hastisādibhiḥ ,
anyatra hi vadhādeṣāṁ nāsti rājanparājayaḥ.
18. na ete jātu nivartern preṣitāḥ hastisādibhiḥ
anyatra hi vadhāt eṣām na asti rājan parājayaḥ
18. rājan,
ete hastisādibhiḥ preṣitāḥ jātu na nivartern.
hi,
eṣām vadhāt anyatra parājayaḥ na asti.
18. O King, these (elephants), even when directed by their elephant riders, would never retreat. Indeed, for them, there is no defeat except through death.
अथ यान्रथिनो राजन्समन्तादनुपश्यसि ।
एते रुक्मरथा नाम राजपुत्रा महारथाः ॥१९॥
19. atha yānrathino rājansamantādanupaśyasi ,
ete rukmarathā nāma rājaputrā mahārathāḥ.
19. atha yān rathinaḥ rājan samantāt anupaśyasi
ete rukmarathāḥ nāma rājaputrāḥ mahārathāḥ
19. atha,
rājan,
yān rathinaḥ samantāt anupaśyasi,
ete rukmarathāḥ nāma rājaputrāḥ mahārathāḥ (santi).
19. Now, O King, these charioteers whom you see all around, they are the princes named Rukmaratha, great chariot warriors.
रथेष्वस्त्रेषु निपुणा नागेषु च विशां पते ।
धनुर्वेदे गताः पारं मुष्टियुद्धे च कोविदाः ॥२०॥
20. ratheṣvastreṣu nipuṇā nāgeṣu ca viśāṁ pate ,
dhanurvede gatāḥ pāraṁ muṣṭiyuddhe ca kovidāḥ.
20. ratheṣu astreṣu nipuṇāḥ nāgeṣu ca viśām pate
dhanurvede gatāḥ pāram muṣṭiyuddhe ca kovidāḥ
20. viśām pate,
(te) ratheṣu,
astreṣu ca nipuṇāḥ,
nāgeṣu ca (nipuṇāḥ),
dhanurvede pāram gatāḥ,
muṣṭiyuddhe ca kovidāḥ (santi).
20. O Lord of the people (viśām pate), they are skilled in chariot warfare, in the use of weapons, and in managing elephants. They have attained complete mastery in archery (dhanurveda) and are also experts in fist-fighting.
गदायुद्धविशेषज्ञा नियुद्धकुशलास्तथा ।
खड्गप्रहरणे युक्ताः संपाते चासिचर्मणोः ॥२१॥
21. gadāyuddhaviśeṣajñā niyuddhakuśalāstathā ,
khaḍgapraharaṇe yuktāḥ saṁpāte cāsicarmaṇoḥ.
21. gadāyuddhaviśeṣajñāḥ niyuddhakūśalāḥ tathā
khaḍgapraharaṇe yuktāḥ sampāte ca asicarmaṇoḥ
21. gadāyuddhaviśeṣajñāḥ niyuddhakūśalāḥ tathā
khaḍgapraharaṇe ca asicarmaṇoḥ sampāte yuktāḥ
21. They are experts in mace fighting, skilled in unarmed combat, and adept in wielding swords and in the clash of sword and shield.
शूराश्च कृतविद्याश्च स्पर्धन्ते च परस्परम् ।
नित्यं च समरे राजन्विजिगीषन्ति मानवान् ॥२२॥
22. śūrāśca kṛtavidyāśca spardhante ca parasparam ,
nityaṁ ca samare rājanvijigīṣanti mānavān.
22. śūrāḥ ca kṛtavidyāḥ ca spardhante ca parasparam
nityam ca samare rājan vijigīṣanti mānavān
22. rājan śūrāḥ ca kṛtavidyāḥ ca parasparam nityam
spardhante ca samare mānavān vijigīṣanti
22. And these brave and learned warriors constantly compete with each other, O King, and always desire to conquer their opponents in battle.
कर्णेन विजिता राजन्दुःशासनमनुव्रताः ।
एतांस्तु वासुदेवोऽपि रथोदारान्प्रशंसति ॥२३॥
23. karṇena vijitā rājanduḥśāsanamanuvratāḥ ,
etāṁstu vāsudevo'pi rathodārānpraśaṁsati.
23. karṇena vijitāḥ rājan duḥśāsanamauvratāḥ
etān tu vāsudevaḥ api rathodārān praśaṃsati
23. rājan karṇena vijitāḥ duḥśāsanamauvratāḥ
etān rathodārān tu vāsudevaḥ api praśaṃsati
23. O King, these followers of Duḥśāsana, who were conquered by Karṇa—even Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) praises these noble charioteers.
सततं प्रियकामाश्च कर्णस्यैते वशे स्थिताः ।
तस्यैव वचनाद्राजन्निवृत्ताः श्वेतवाहनात् ॥२४॥
24. satataṁ priyakāmāśca karṇasyaite vaśe sthitāḥ ,
tasyaiva vacanādrājannivṛttāḥ śvetavāhanāt.
24. satatam priyakāmāḥ ca karṇasya ete vaśe sthitāḥ
tasya eva vacanāt rājan nivṛttāḥ śvetavāhanāt
24. rājan ete satatam priyakāmāḥ ca karṇasya vaśe
sthitāḥ tasya eva vacanāt śvetavāhanāt nivṛttāḥ
24. And these men, always desiring Karṇa's favor, remain under his control. O King, it was only by his command that they turned away from Arjuna (śvetavāhana).
ते न क्षता न च श्रान्ता दृढावरणकार्मुकाः ।
मदर्थं विष्ठिता नूनं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य शासनात् ॥२५॥
25. te na kṣatā na ca śrāntā dṛḍhāvaraṇakārmukāḥ ,
madarthaṁ viṣṭhitā nūnaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrasya śāsanāt.
25. te na kṣatāḥ na ca śrāntāḥ dṛḍhāvaraṇakārmukāḥ
mat-artham viṣṭhitāḥ nūnam dhārtarāṣṭrasya śāsanāt
25. te dṛḍhāvaraṇakārmukāḥ na kṣatāḥ na ca śrāntāḥ
dhārtarāṣṭrasya śāsanāt nūnam mat-artham viṣṭhitāḥ
25. They are neither wounded nor weary; they possess strong armor and bows. Indeed, they stand arrayed for my sake, by the command of Dhritarashtra's son (Duryodhana).
एतान्प्रमथ्य संग्रामे प्रियार्थं तव कौरव ।
प्रयास्यामि ततः पश्चात्पदवीं सव्यसाचिनः ॥२६॥
26. etānpramathya saṁgrāme priyārthaṁ tava kaurava ,
prayāsyāmi tataḥ paścātpadavīṁ savyasācinaḥ.
26. etān pramathya saṃgrāme priya-artham tava kaurava
prayāsyāmi tataḥ paścāt padavīm savyasācinaḥ
26. kaurava,
tava priya-artham saṃgrāme etān pramathya,
tataḥ paścāt savyasācinaḥ padavīm prayāsyāmi
26. O Kaurava (Duryodhana), having crushed these in battle for your pleasure, I shall then follow the path of Savyasachin (Arjuna).
यांस्त्वेतानपरान्राजन्नागान्सप्तशतानि च ।
प्रेक्षसे वर्मसंछन्नान्किरातैः समधिष्ठितान् ॥२७॥
27. yāṁstvetānaparānrājannāgānsaptaśatāni ca ,
prekṣase varmasaṁchannānkirātaiḥ samadhiṣṭhitān.
27. yān tu etān aparān rājan nāgān sapta-śatāni ca
prekṣase varma-saṃchannān kirātaiḥ samadhiṣṭhitān
27. rājan,
yān tu etān aparān sapta-śatāni ca nāgān varma-saṃchannān kirātaiḥ samadhiṣṭhitān prekṣase.

27. O King, these other seven hundred elephants, which you see, covered with armor and mounted by Kiratas...
किरातराजो यान्प्रादाद्गृहीतः सव्यसाचिना ।
स्वलंकृतांस्तथा प्रेष्यानिच्छञ्जीवितमात्मनः ॥२८॥
28. kirātarājo yānprādādgṛhītaḥ savyasācinā ,
svalaṁkṛtāṁstathā preṣyānicchañjīvitamātmanaḥ.
28. kirāta-rājaḥ yān prādāt gṛhītaḥ savyasācinā
su-alaṅkṛtān tathā preṣyān icchan jīvitam ātmanaḥ
28. savyasācinā gṛhītaḥ kirāta-rājaḥ ātmanaḥ jīvitam icchan,
yān su-alaṅkṛtān tathā preṣyān prādāt
28. ...whom the Kirata king, captured by Savyasachin (Arjuna) and wishing for his own life (ātman), gave as well-adorned servants.
आसन्नेते पुरा राजंस्तव कर्मकरा दृढम् ।
त्वामेवाद्य युयुत्सन्ते पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥२९॥
29. āsannete purā rājaṁstava karmakarā dṛḍham ,
tvāmevādya yuyutsante paśya kālasya paryayam.
29. āsan ete purā rājan tava karmakarāḥ dṛḍham tvām
eva adya yuyutsante paśya kālasya paryayam
29. rājan ete purā tava dṛḍham karmakarāḥ āsan adya
tvām eva yuyutsante kālasya paryayam paśya
29. O king, these were formerly your steadfast servants. Today, they themselves wish to fight you. Behold the change of time!
तेषामेते महामात्राः किराता युद्धदुर्मदाः ।
हस्तिशिक्षाविदश्चैव सर्वे चैवाग्नियोनयः ॥३०॥
30. teṣāmete mahāmātrāḥ kirātā yuddhadurmadāḥ ,
hastiśikṣāvidaścaiva sarve caivāgniyonayaḥ.

30. Among them, these fierce-in-battle Kirātas are their chief elephant-riders and trainers. Moreover, all of them are of fiery origin.
एते विनिर्जिताः सर्वे संग्रामे सव्यसाचिना ।
मदर्थमद्य संयत्ता दुर्योधनवशानुगाः ॥३१॥
31. ete vinirjitāḥ sarve saṁgrāme savyasācinā ,
madarthamadya saṁyattā duryodhanavaśānugāḥ.

31. All these were defeated in battle by Savyasācin (Arjuna). Today, they are prepared for my sake, following Duryodhana's command.
एतान्भित्त्वा शरै राजन्किरातान्युद्धदुर्मदान् ।
सैन्धवस्य वधे युक्तमनुयास्यामि पाण्डवम् ॥३२॥
32. etānbhittvā śarai rājankirātānyuddhadurmadān ,
saindhavasya vadhe yuktamanuyāsyāmi pāṇḍavam.

32. O king, having pierced these battle-fierce Kirātas with arrows, I will follow the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) who is engaged in the slaying of the king of Sindhu (Jayadratha).
ये त्वेते सुमहानागा अञ्जनस्य कुलोद्भवाः ।
कर्कशाश्च विनीताश्च प्रभिन्नकरटामुखाः ॥३३॥
33. ye tvete sumahānāgā añjanasya kulodbhavāḥ ,

33. And these very large elephants, born from Añjana's lineage, are formidable yet disciplined, with streams of ichor flowing from their temples and mouths.
जाम्बूनदमयैः सर्वैर्वर्मभिः सुविभूषिताः ।
लब्धलक्ष्या रणे राजन्नैरावणसमा युधि ॥३४॥
34. jāmbūnadamayaiḥ sarvairvarmabhiḥ suvibhūṣitāḥ ,
labdhalakṣyā raṇe rājannairāvaṇasamā yudhi.

34. All of them are splendidly adorned with golden armors, having achieved their objectives in battle; O King, in combat they are comparable to Airāvaṇa.
उत्तरात्पर्वतादेते तीक्ष्णैर्दस्युभिरास्थिताः ।
कर्कशैः प्रवरैर्योधैः कार्ष्णायसतनुच्छदैः ॥३५॥
35. uttarātparvatādete tīkṣṇairdasyubhirāsthitāḥ ,
karkaśaiḥ pravarairyodhaiḥ kārṣṇāyasatanucchadaiḥ.

35. These (elephants) are positioned from the northern mountain, accompanied by fierce bandits, and by formidable, excellent warriors clad in armors of black iron.
सन्ति गोयोनयश्चात्र सन्ति वानरयोनयः ।
अनेकयोनयश्चान्ये तथा मानुषयोनयः ॥३६॥
36. santi goyonayaścātra santi vānarayonayaḥ ,
anekayonayaścānye tathā mānuṣayonayaḥ.

36. Here there are creatures of bovine origin, and there are creatures of monkey origin. Also present are other diverse species, as well as those of human origin.
अनीकमसतामेतद्धूमवर्णमुदीर्यते ।
म्लेच्छानां पापकर्तॄणां हिमवद्दुर्गवासिनाम् ॥३७॥
37. anīkamasatāmetaddhūmavarṇamudīryate ,
mlecchānāṁ pāpakartṝṇāṁ himavaddurgavāsinām.

37. This smoke-colored army is described as belonging to the wicked Mlecchas (foreigners), who are evildoers residing in mountain fortresses in the Himalayas.
एतद्दुर्योधनो लब्ध्वा समग्रं नागमण्डलम् ।
कृपं च सौमदत्तिं च द्रोणं च रथिनां वरम् ॥३८॥
38. etadduryodhano labdhvā samagraṁ nāgamaṇḍalam ,
kṛpaṁ ca saumadattiṁ ca droṇaṁ ca rathināṁ varam.

38. Having obtained this complete host of Nāgas (serpent-beings or elephants), along with Kṛpa, Saumadatti (Bhūriśravas), and Droṇa, the best of charioteers, Duryodhana...
सिन्धुराजं तथा कर्णमवमन्यत पाण्डवान् ।
कृतार्थमथ चात्मानं मन्यते कालचोदितः ॥३९॥
39. sindhurājaṁ tathā karṇamavamanyata pāṇḍavān ,
kṛtārthamatha cātmānaṁ manyate kālacoditaḥ.

39. He (Duryodhana) disrespected the Pāṇḍavas, considering Sindhurāja and Karṇa to be superior. Then, driven by fate (kāla), he considered himself to have achieved his purpose.
ते च सर्वेऽनुसंप्राप्ता मम नाराचगोचरम् ।
न विमोक्ष्यन्ति कौन्तेय यद्यपि स्युर्मनोजवाः ॥४०॥
40. te ca sarve'nusaṁprāptā mama nārācagocaram ,
na vimokṣyanti kaunteya yadyapi syurmanojavāḥ.
40. te ca sarve anusaṃprāptāḥ mama nārācagocaram
na vimokṣyanti kaunteya yadyapi syuḥ manojavāḥ

40. And all of them, O Kaunteya (Arjuna), having come within the range of my arrows, will not escape, even if they are as swift as thought.
तेन संभाविता नित्यं परवीर्योपजीविना ।
विनाशमुपयास्यन्ति मच्छरौघनिपीडिताः ॥४१॥
41. tena saṁbhāvitā nityaṁ paravīryopajīvinā ,
vināśamupayāsyanti maccharaughanipīḍitāḥ.

41. Those (warriors), constantly maintained by him who relies on the prowess of others, will meet their demise, overwhelmed by the multitude of my arrows.

एते दुर्वारणा नाम काम्बोजा यदि ते श्रुताः ॥४२॥
42. ye tvete rathino rājandṛśyante kāñcanadhvajāḥ ,
ete durvāraṇā nāma kāmbojā yadi te śrutāḥ.
42. ye tu ete rathinaḥ rājan dṛśyante kāñcanadhvajāḥ
ete durvāraṇāḥ nāma kāmbojāḥ yadi te śrutāḥ

42. O King, these chariot-warriors with golden banners, who are seen here, are the ones named Durvāraṇas—Kambojas (by origin)—if you have heard of them.
शूराश्च कृतविद्याश्च धनुर्वेदे च निष्ठिताः ।
संहताश्च भृशं ह्येते अन्योन्यस्य हितैषिणः ॥४३॥
43. śūrāśca kṛtavidyāśca dhanurvede ca niṣṭhitāḥ ,
saṁhatāśca bhṛśaṁ hyete anyonyasya hitaiṣiṇaḥ.
43. śūrāḥ ca kṛtavidyāḥ ca dhanurvede ca niṣṭhitāḥ
saṃhatāḥ ca bhṛśam hi ete anyonyasya hitaiṣiṇaḥ
43. ete ca śūrāḥ ca kṛtavidyāḥ ca dhanurvede niṣṭhitāḥ
hi ca bhṛśam saṃhatāḥ anyonyasya hitaiṣiṇaḥ
43. And these (warriors) are brave, accomplished in learning, and proficient in the science of archery (dhanurveda). Indeed, they are greatly united and benevolent towards each other.
अक्षौहिण्यश्च संरब्धा धार्तराष्ट्रस्य भारत ।
यत्ता मदर्थं तिष्ठन्ति कुरुवीराभिरक्षिताः ॥४४॥
44. akṣauhiṇyaśca saṁrabdhā dhārtarāṣṭrasya bhārata ,
yattā madarthaṁ tiṣṭhanti kuruvīrābhirakṣitāḥ.
44. akṣauhiṇyaḥ ca saṃrabdhāḥ dhārtarāṣṭrasya bhārata
yattāḥ madartham tiṣṭhanti kuruvīrābhirakṣitāḥ
44. ca bhārata dhārtarāṣṭrasya saṃrabdhāḥ akṣauhiṇyaḥ

44. And, O Bhārata, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son's (Duryodhana's) enraged *akṣauhiṇīs*, protected by the Kuru heroes, are standing ready for my sake.
अप्रमत्ता महाराज मामेव प्रत्युपस्थिताः ।
तांस्त्वहं प्रमथिष्यामि तृणानीव हुताशनः ॥४५॥
45. apramattā mahārāja māmeva pratyupasthitāḥ ,
tāṁstvahaṁ pramathiṣyāmi tṛṇānīva hutāśanaḥ.
45. apramattāḥ mahārāja mām eva pratyupasthitāḥ
tān tu aham pramathiṣyāmi tṛṇāni iva hutāśanaḥ
45. mahārāja,
mām eva apramattāḥ pratyupasthitāḥ,

45. O great king, those [enemies] who stand before me, diligent [in their efforts], I will indeed crush them, just as fire consumes grass.
तस्मात्सर्वानुपासङ्गान्सर्वोपकरणानि च ।
रथे कुर्वन्तु मे राजन्यथावद्रथकल्पकाः ॥४६॥
46. tasmātsarvānupāsaṅgānsarvopakaraṇāni ca ,
rathe kurvantu me rājanyathāvadrathakalpakāḥ.

46. Therefore, O king, let the chariot-builders duly place all quivers and all equipment in my chariot.
अस्मिंस्तु खलु संग्रामे ग्राह्यं विविधमायुधम् ।
यथोपदिष्टमाचार्यैः कार्यः पञ्चगुणो रथः ॥४७॥
47. asmiṁstu khalu saṁgrāme grāhyaṁ vividhamāyudham ,
yathopadiṣṭamācāryaiḥ kāryaḥ pañcaguṇo rathaḥ.
47. asmin tu khalu saṃgrāme grāhyam vividham āyudham
yathopadiṣṭam ācāryaiḥ kāryaḥ pañcaguṇaḥ rathaḥ

47. Moreover, in this battle, various weapons should certainly be taken. The chariot should be made five-fold, as instructed by the preceptors.
काम्बोजैर्हि समेष्यामि क्रुद्धैराशीविषोपमैः ।
नानाशस्त्रसमावापैर्विविधायुधयोधिभिः ॥४८॥
48. kāmbojairhi sameṣyāmi kruddhairāśīviṣopamaiḥ ,
nānāśastrasamāvāpairvividhāyudhayodhibhiḥ.
48. kāmbhojaiḥ hi sameṣyāmi kruddhaiḥ āśīviṣopamaiḥ
nānāśastrasamāvāpaiḥ vividhāyudhayodhibhiḥ
48. hi,
aham kruddhaiḥ āśīviṣopamaiḥ nānāśastrasamāvāpaiḥ vividhāyudhayodhibhiḥ kāmbhojaiḥ sameṣyāmi.
48. Indeed, I will confront the Kambojas, who are enraged and resemble venomous snakes, having amassed various weapons and fighting with diverse armaments.
किरातैश्च समेष्यामि विषकल्पैः प्रहारिभिः ।
लालितैः सततं राज्ञा दुर्योधनहितैषिभिः ॥४९॥
49. kirātaiśca sameṣyāmi viṣakalpaiḥ prahāribhiḥ ,
lālitaiḥ satataṁ rājñā duryodhanahitaiṣibhiḥ.

49. I will also confront the Kirātas, who are like poison, fierce attackers, constantly favored by the king, and devoted to Duryodhana's welfare.
शकैश्चापि समेष्यामि शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमैः ।
अग्निकल्पैर्दुराधर्षैः प्रदीप्तैरिव पावकैः ॥५०॥
50. śakaiścāpi sameṣyāmi śakratulyaparākramaiḥ ,
agnikalpairdurādharṣaiḥ pradīptairiva pāvakaiḥ.

50. I will also confront the Śakas, whose valor rivals Indra's (Śakra), who are like fire, unassailable, and as resplendent as blazing flames.
तथान्यैर्विविधैर्योधैः कालकल्पैर्दुरासदैः ।
समेष्यामि रणे राजन्बहुभिर्युद्धदुर्मदैः ॥५१॥
51. tathānyairvividhairyodhaiḥ kālakalpairdurāsadaiḥ ,
sameṣyāmi raṇe rājanbahubhiryuddhadurmadaiḥ.
51. tathā anyaiḥ vividhaiḥ yodhaiḥ kālakalpaiḥ durāsadaiḥ
sameṣyāmi raṇe rājan bahubhiḥ yuddhadurmadaiḥ

51. And also, O king, I will confront many other diverse warriors in battle, who are as formidable as Death (Kāla), unapproachable, and fiercely intoxicated by war.
तस्माद्वै वाजिनो मुख्या विश्रान्ताः शुभलक्षणाः ।
उपावृत्ताश्च पीताश्च पुनर्युज्यन्तु मे रथे ॥५२॥
52. tasmādvai vājino mukhyā viśrāntāḥ śubhalakṣaṇāḥ ,
upāvṛttāśca pītāśca punaryujyantu me rathe.

52. Therefore, let my principal horses, those that are well-rested, possess auspicious marks, and have returned and refreshed themselves with drink, be yoked again to my chariot.
तस्य सर्वानुपासङ्गान्सर्वोपकरणानि च ।
रथे प्रास्थापयद्राजा शस्त्राणि विविधानि च ॥५३॥
53. tasya sarvānupāsaṅgānsarvopakaraṇāni ca ,
rathe prāsthāpayadrājā śastrāṇi vividhāni ca.

53. The king placed all his necessary articles and equipment, along with various weapons, in the chariot.
ततस्तान्सर्वतो मुक्त्वा सदश्वांश्चतुरो जनाः ।
रसवत्पाययामासुः पानं मदसमीरिणम् ॥५४॥
54. tatastānsarvato muktvā sadaśvāṁścaturo janāḥ ,
rasavatpāyayāmāsuḥ pānaṁ madasamīriṇam.
54. tataḥ tān sarvataḥ muktvā sadaśvān caturaḥ
janāḥ rasavat pāyayāmāsuḥ pānam madasamīriṇam

54. Then, the attendants, having released those four excellent horses from all restraints, made them drink a delicious, exhilarating beverage.
पीतोपवृत्तान्स्नातांश्च जग्धान्नान्समलंकृतान् ।
विनीतशल्यांस्तुरगांश्चतुरो हेममालिनः ॥५५॥
55. pītopavṛttānsnātāṁśca jagdhānnānsamalaṁkṛtān ,
vinītaśalyāṁsturagāṁścaturo hemamālinaḥ.

55. The four horses, who had returned after drinking, were bathed, had eaten their food, were well-decorated, had their discomforts removed, and were adorned with golden garlands.
तान्यत्तान्रुक्मवर्णाभान्विनीताञ्शीघ्रगामिनः ।
संहृष्टमनसोऽव्यग्रान्विधिवत्कल्पिते रथे ॥५६॥
56. tānyattānrukmavarṇābhānvinītāñśīghragāminaḥ ,
saṁhṛṣṭamanaso'vyagrānvidhivatkalpite rathe.

56. Those harnessed horses, shining with a golden hue, well-trained, swift-moving, with joyful and calm minds, were in the chariot which had been prepared according to custom.
महाध्वजेन सिंहेन हेमकेसरमालिना ।
संवृते केतनैर्हेमैर्मणिविद्रुमचित्रितैः ।
पाण्डुराभ्रप्रकाशाभिः पताकाभिरलंकृते ॥५७॥
57. mahādhvajena siṁhena hemakesaramālinā ,
saṁvṛte ketanairhemairmaṇividrumacitritaiḥ ,
pāṇḍurābhraprakāśābhiḥ patākābhiralaṁkṛte.

57. Adorned with a magnificent banner depicting a lion with a golden mane, covered with golden standards embellished with jewels and coral, and further decorated with pennants shining like white clouds.
हेमदण्डोच्छ्रितच्छत्रे बहुशस्त्रपरिच्छदे ।
योजयामास विधिवद्धेमभाण्डविभूषितान् ॥५८॥
58. hemadaṇḍocchritacchatre bahuśastraparicchade ,
yojayāmāsa vidhivaddhemabhāṇḍavibhūṣitān.

58. He properly harnessed those adorned with golden ornaments to the chariot, which bore a parasol raised on a golden staff and was equipped with many weapons.
दारुकस्यानुजो भ्राता सूतस्तस्य प्रियः सखा ।
न्यवेदयद्रथं युक्तं वासवस्येव मातलिः ॥५९॥
59. dārukasyānujo bhrātā sūtastasya priyaḥ sakhā ,
nyavedayadrathaṁ yuktaṁ vāsavasyeva mātaliḥ.

nyavedayat ratham yuktam vāsavasya iva mātaliḥ
59. dārukasya anujaḥ bhrātā,
tasya priyaḥ sakhā sūtaḥ,
yuktam ratham vāsavasya iva mātaliḥ (iva) nyavedayat
59. Dāruka's younger brother, who was the charioteer and a dear friend to him, presented the harnessed chariot, just as Mātali did for Vāsava (Indra).
ततः स्नातः शुचिर्भूत्वा कृतकौतुकमङ्गलः ।
स्नातकानां सहस्रस्य स्वर्णनिष्कानदापयत् ।
आशीर्वादैः परिष्वक्तः सात्यकिः श्रीमतां वरः ॥६०॥
60. tataḥ snātaḥ śucirbhūtvā kṛtakautukamaṅgalaḥ ,
snātakānāṁ sahasrasya svarṇaniṣkānadāpayat ,
āśīrvādaiḥ pariṣvaktaḥ sātyakiḥ śrīmatāṁ varaḥ.
60. tataḥ snātaḥ śuciḥ bhūtvā
kṛtakautukamaṅgalaḥ snātakānām sahasrasya
svarṇaniṣkān adāpayat āśīrvādaiḥ
pariṣvakṭaḥ sātyakiḥ śrīmatām varaḥ
60. tataḥ śrīmatām varaḥ sātyakiḥ snātaḥ
śuciḥ bhūtvā kṛtakautukamaṅgalaḥ
āśīrvādaiḥ pariṣvakṭaḥ snātakānām
sahasrasya svarṇaniṣkān adāpayat
60. Then Sātyaki, the best among the illustrious, after bathing, becoming pure, and performing auspicious rites, gave golden niṣkas to a thousand graduates (snātakas), surrounded by their blessings.
ततः स मधुपर्कार्हः पीत्वा कैलावतं मधु ।
लोहिताक्षो बभौ तत्र मदविह्वललोचनः ॥६१॥
61. tataḥ sa madhuparkārhaḥ pītvā kailāvataṁ madhu ,
lohitākṣo babhau tatra madavihvalalocanaḥ.

61. Then, he, who was worthy of the madhuparka offering, having drunk the Kailāvata honey, appeared there with red eyes and a gaze unsteady from intoxication.
आलभ्य वीरकांस्यं च हर्षेण महतान्वितः ।
द्विगुणीकृततेजा हि प्रज्वलन्निव पावकः ।
उत्सङ्गे धनुरादाय सशरं रथिनां वरः ॥६२॥
62. ālabhya vīrakāṁsyaṁ ca harṣeṇa mahatānvitaḥ ,
dviguṇīkṛtatejā hi prajvalanniva pāvakaḥ ,
utsaṅge dhanurādāya saśaraṁ rathināṁ varaḥ.

62. And, having taken the hero's ceremonial bronze (vessel), filled with great joy, his radiance indeed doubled, he shone like a blazing fire. The best of charioteers then placed his bow with arrows on his lap.
कृतस्वस्त्ययनो विप्रैः कवची समलंकृतः ।
लाजैर्गन्धैस्तथा माल्यैः कन्याभिश्चाभिनन्दितः ॥६३॥
63. kṛtasvastyayano vipraiḥ kavacī samalaṁkṛtaḥ ,
lājairgandhaistathā mālyaiḥ kanyābhiścābhinanditaḥ.

63. Auspicious rites (svastyayana) having been performed for him by the brahmins, armored and well-decorated, he was then praised and greeted by parched grain, fragrances, garlands, and by the maidens.
युधिष्ठिरस्य चरणावभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः ।
तेन मूर्धन्युपाघ्रात आरुरोह महारथम् ॥६४॥
64. yudhiṣṭhirasya caraṇāvabhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ ,

64. Having saluted Yudhiṣṭhira's feet and having respectfully folded his hands, and after being kissed on the head by him (Yudhiṣṭhira), he then ascended the great chariot.
ततस्ते वाजिनो हृष्टाः सुपुष्टा वातरंहसः ।
अजय्या जैत्रमूहुस्तं विकुर्वन्तः स्म सैन्धवाः ॥६५॥
65. tataste vājino hṛṣṭāḥ supuṣṭā vātaraṁhasaḥ ,
ajayyā jaitramūhustaṁ vikurvantaḥ sma saindhavāḥ.
65. tataḥ te vājinaḥ hṛṣṭāḥ supuṣṭāḥ vāta-raṃhasaḥ
ajayyāḥ jaitram ūhuḥ tam vikurvantaḥ sma saindhavāḥ

65. Then, those spirited horses belonging to the Sindhu king, well-fed, swift as the wind, and unconquerable, carried him along victoriously, exhibiting their prowess.
अथ हर्षपरीताङ्गः सात्यकिर्भीममब्रवीत् ।
त्वं भीम रक्ष राजानमेतत्कार्यतमं हि ते ॥६६॥
66. atha harṣaparītāṅgaḥ sātyakirbhīmamabravīt ,
tvaṁ bhīma rakṣa rājānametatkāryatamaṁ hi te.
66. atha harṣa-parītāṅgaḥ sātyakiḥ bhīmam abravīt
tvam bhīma rakṣa rājānam etat kārya-tamam hi te

66. Then, Satyaki, whose body was overcome with joy, said to Bhima: 'O Bhima, you protect the king, for this is indeed your most crucial duty.'
अहं भित्त्वा प्रवेक्ष्यामि कालपक्वमिदं बलम् ।
आयत्यां च तदात्वे च श्रेयो राज्ञोऽभिरक्षणम् ॥६७॥
67. ahaṁ bhittvā pravekṣyāmi kālapakvamidaṁ balam ,
āyatyāṁ ca tadātve ca śreyo rājño'bhirakṣaṇam.

āyatyām ca tadātve ca śreyaḥ rājñaḥ abhirakṣaṇam

67. I will pierce and enter this army, which is ripe for destruction. The protection of the king is indeed paramount for his welfare (śreyaḥ), both now and in the future.
जानीषे मम वीर्यं त्वं तव चाहमरिंदम ।
तस्माद्भीम निवर्तस्व मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम् ॥६८॥
68. jānīṣe mama vīryaṁ tvaṁ tava cāhamariṁdama ,
tasmādbhīma nivartasva mama cedicchasi priyam.

tasmāt bhīma nivartasva mama cet icchasi priyam
68. ariṃ-dama,

68. O vanquisher of foes (ariṃdama), you know my valor, and I know yours. Therefore, O Bhima, if you wish to do me a favor, turn back.
तथोक्तः सात्यकिं प्राह व्रज त्वं कार्यसिद्धये ।
अहं राज्ञः करिष्यामि रक्षां पुरुषसत्तम ॥६९॥
69. tathoktaḥ sātyakiṁ prāha vraja tvaṁ kāryasiddhaye ,
ahaṁ rājñaḥ kariṣyāmi rakṣāṁ puruṣasattama.
69. tathā uktaḥ sātyakim prāha vraja tvam kārya
siddhaye aham rājñaḥ kariṣyāmi rakṣām puruṣasattama
69. puruṣasattama tathā uktaḥ sātyakim prāha: tvam kārya siddhaye vraja,
aham rājñaḥ rakṣām kariṣyāmi.
69. Thus spoken to, he said to Sātyaki, 'You go for the accomplishment of the task. O best among men (puruṣa), I will undertake the king's protection.'
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच भीमसेनं स माधवः ।
गच्छ गच्छ द्रुतं पार्थ ध्रुवोऽद्य विजयो मम ॥७०॥
70. evamuktaḥ pratyuvāca bhīmasenaṁ sa mādhavaḥ ,
gaccha gaccha drutaṁ pārtha dhruvo'dya vijayo mama.
70. evam uktaḥ prati uvāca bhīmasenam sa mādhavaḥ gaccha
gaccha drutam pārtha dhruvaḥ adya vijayaḥ mama
70. evam uktaḥ sa mādhavaḥ bhīmasenam prati uvāca: pārtha,
gaccha gaccha drutam; adya mama vijayaḥ dhruvaḥ.
70. Thus spoken to, that Mādhava replied to Bhīmasena, 'Go, go quickly, Pārtha! My victory is certain today.'
यन्मे स्निग्धोऽनुरक्तश्च त्वमद्य वशगः स्थितः ।
निमित्तानि च धन्यानि यथा भीम वदन्ति मे ॥७१॥
71. yanme snigdho'nuraktaśca tvamadya vaśagaḥ sthitaḥ ,
nimittāni ca dhanyāni yathā bhīma vadanti me.
71. yat me snigdhaḥ anuraktaḥ ca tvam adya vaśagaḥ
sthitaḥ nimittāni ca dhanyāni yathā bhīma vadanti me
71. bhīma,
yat tvam adya snigdhaḥ anuraktaḥ ca vaśagaḥ sthitaḥ,
ca dhanyāni nimittāni me yathā vadanti.
71. Because, O Bhīma, you are now devoted and affectionate, and have come under my control; and the auspicious omens speak to me likewise.
निहते सैन्धवे पापे पाण्डवेन महात्मना ।
परिष्वजिष्ये राजानं धर्मात्मानं न संशयः ॥७२॥
72. nihate saindhave pāpe pāṇḍavena mahātmanā ,
pariṣvajiṣye rājānaṁ dharmātmānaṁ na saṁśayaḥ.
72. nihate saindhave pāpe pāṇḍavena mahātmanā
pariṣvajiṣye rājānam dharmātmānam na saṃśayaḥ
72. pāpe saindhave mahātmanā pāṇḍavena nihate (sati),
aham dharmātmānam rājānam pariṣvajiṣye; saṃśayaḥ na (asti).
72. When that sinful Saindhava is slain by the great-souled (mahātman) Pāṇḍava, I will embrace the king, whose nature is righteousness (dharma); there is no doubt about it.
एतावदुक्त्वा भीमं तु विसृज्य च महामनाः ।
संप्रैक्षत्तावकं सैन्यं व्याघ्रो मृगगणानिव ॥७३॥
73. etāvaduktvā bhīmaṁ tu visṛjya ca mahāmanāḥ ,
saṁpraikṣattāvakaṁ sainyaṁ vyāghro mṛgagaṇāniva.
73. etāvat uktvā bhīmam tu visṛjya ca mahāmanāḥ
sampraikṣat tāvakam sainyam vyāghraḥ mṛgagaṇān iva
73. mahāmanāḥ etāvat bhīmam uktvā ca visṛjya,

tāvakam sainyam sampraikṣat.
73. Having said this much to Bhima and dismissed him, that great-minded one (Yudhiṣṭhira) gazed upon your army as a tiger eyes herds of deer.
तं दृष्ट्वा प्रविविक्षन्तं सैन्यं तव जनाधिप ।
भूय एवाभवन्मूढं सुभृशं चाप्यकम्पत ॥७४॥
74. taṁ dṛṣṭvā pravivikṣantaṁ sainyaṁ tava janādhipa ,
bhūya evābhavanmūḍhaṁ subhṛśaṁ cāpyakampata.
74. tam dṛṣṭvā pravivikṣantam sainyam tava janādhipa
bhūya eva abhavat mūḍham subhṛśam ca api akampata
74. janādhipa,

74. O lord of men, having seen him attempting to penetrate your army, it (your army) became bewildered once more and trembled greatly.
ततः प्रयातः सहसा सैन्यं तव स सात्यकिः ।
दिदृक्षुरर्जुनं राजन्धर्मराजस्य शासनात् ॥७५॥
75. tataḥ prayātaḥ sahasā sainyaṁ tava sa sātyakiḥ ,
didṛkṣurarjunaṁ rājandharmarājasya śāsanāt.

75. O king, then that Satyakī quickly proceeded towards your army, desiring to see Arjuna, by the command of Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of natural law (dharma).
