Sanjaya said: Having engaged each other, those two vast armies, whose horses, men, and elephants were greatly exhilarated, clashed like the forces of gods and asuras.

Then, in that great battle, elephants, chariots, horses, and foot soldiers executed a supreme assault, which obliterated bodies and dissolved accumulated demerit (pāpma).
पूर्णचन्द्रार्कपद्मानां कान्तित्विड्गन्धतः समैः ।
उत्तमाङ्गैर्नृसिंहानां नृसिंहास्तस्तरुर्महीम् ॥३॥

The Narasimhas covered the earth with the severed heads of other man-lions, heads that rivaled the full moon, the sun, and lotuses in their radiance, luster, and fragrance.
अर्धचन्द्रैस्तथा भल्लैः क्षुरप्रैरसिपट्टिशैः ।
परश्वधैश्चाप्यकृन्तन्नुत्तमाङ्गानि युध्यताम् ॥४॥

With half-moon arrows, barbed spears, razor-sharp arrows, swords, broadswords, and also battle-axes, they severed the heads of those engaged in battle.

The immensely long and outstretched arms of the warriors, themselves possessing immensely long and outstretched arms, fell to the ground, accompanied by other similarly long and outstretched arms, with their weapon-gripping fists and armlets severed.
तैः स्फुरद्भिर्मही भाति रक्ताङ्गुलितलैस्तदा ।
गरुडप्रहतैरुग्रैः पञ्चास्यैरिव पन्नगैः ॥६॥

At that time, the earth appeared radiant with those quivering (arms) whose finger-palms were red, resembling fierce, five-headed serpents struck down by Garuda.
हयस्यन्दननागेभ्यः पेतुर्वीरा द्विषद्धताः ।
विमानेभ्यो यथा क्षीणे पुण्ये स्वर्गसदस्तथा ॥७॥

Warriors, struck down by their foes, fell from horses, chariots, and elephants, just as the dwellers of heaven fall from their celestial conveyances when their acquired merit (puṇya) is exhausted.
गदाभिरन्यैर्गुर्वीभिः परिघैर्मुसलैरपि ।

In battle, hundreds of warriors, struck down by maces, other heavy iron clubs, and pestles, fell, slain by their more valiant adversaries.

सादिनः सादिभिश्चैव तस्मिन्परमसंकुले ॥९॥

In that extremely tumultuous battle, chariots were destroyed by chariots, maddened elephants by maddened elephants, and indeed, horsemen by horsemen.

In battle, chariots were destroyed by superior chariots; horsemen by elephants and foot soldiers; and foot soldiers by horsemen. All these, struck down, now lie on the ground.

Chariots, horses, and foot soldiers were attacked by elephants; similarly, elephants and foot soldiers were attacked by chariots. Chariots, foot soldiers, and elephants were attacked by horses, and in turn, horses, chariots, and elephants were attacked by men.
रथाश्वेभनराणां च नराश्वेभरथैः कृतम् ।

A great slaughter (kadana) of chariots, horses, elephants, and men was brought about by men, horses, elephants, and chariots. This immense destruction was also caused by (bare) hands and feet, by weapons, and by chariots.
तथा तस्मिन्बले शूरैर्वध्यमाने हतेऽपि च ।

Thus, even as that army was being fiercely attacked and killed by the heroes, the Pāṇḍavas (Pārthāḥ), led by Vṛkodara, advanced upon us.

14.
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī, the sons of Draupadī, and the Prabhadrakas were present; also Sātyaki and Cekitāna, accompanied by Draviḍa soldiers.
भृता वित्तेन महता पाण्ड्याश्चौड्राः सकेरलाः ।
व्यूढोरस्का दीर्घभुजाः प्रांशवः प्रियदर्शनाः ॥१५॥

15.
The Pāṇḍyas, along with the Choḷas and Keralas, were supported by great wealth. They were broad-chested, long-armed, tall, and pleasant to behold.

They wore turbans and had reddish teeth, displaying the prowess of intoxicated elephants. They were adorned in multi-colored garments and dusted with fragrant powders.

O King, they were positioned in the army ranks, with their swords fastened and ropes in hand, capable of warding off elephants, and mutually resolved to die together.

They were foot-soldiers, wearing quivers and holding bows, long-haired, fond of battle, as strong as Satyaki with no vulnerabilities, and formidable in appearance and valor.
अथापरे पुनः शूराश्चेदिपाञ्चालकेकयाः ।
करूषाः कोसलाः काश्या मागधाश्चापि दुद्रुवुः ॥१९॥

Then, again, other brave warriors - the Chedis, Panchalas, Kekayas, Karushas, Kosalas, Kasyas, and Magadhas - also fled.

Their chariots, elephants, and indeed their foremost foot-soldiers, joyous with various sounds, both danced and laughed.

Bhima (Vrikodara), accompanied by excellent elephant-drivers, approached the middle of that great army of yours, riding on an elephant's back.

That excellent elephant, exceedingly fierce and properly prepared, shone forth like a lofty peak of the rising mountain (Udayadri) upon which the sun has just risen.

His excellent iron armor, adorned with splendid jewels, had a luster equal to that of the star-studded autumnal sky.

Holding a javelin and spear, with a beautiful crest and well-adorned, he charged, burning his enemies with his fiery energy, like the midday sun.

Kṣemadhūrti, seated on his elephant, saw that (other) elephant from afar. Greatly excited, he challenged it and charged towards it with even greater eagerness.

A battle occurred between those two elephants of fierce form, like two great tree-covered mountains meeting by chance.

Those two heroes, grappling intensely like (fighting) elephants, repeatedly pierced each other with javelins that shone like powerful sunbeams, and then they roared.

But having disengaged (from their grapple) like elephants, they moved about in circular formations. And indeed, taking up their bows, they struck each other.

With sounds of battle cries, bowstring slaps, and arrow noises from all directions, those two, having thrilled the people, then let out lion-roars.

Both those two mighty and skilled warriors fought, resembling two elephants with raised trunks and banners fluttering in the wind.

Having cut each other's bows, the two warriors roared at one another, showering each other with javelins and lances, just like monsoon clouds pour down water.

Then, Kshemadhūrti, roaring, swiftly pierced Bhīma in the chest with a lance, and indeed, also with six other lances.

That Bhīmasena, his body inflamed with anger, shone splendidly with the lances stuck in his limbs, just as the radiant sun (aṃśumān) with its seven horses (saptasapti) appears amidst clouds.

Then, diligent Bhīma, exerting himself, discharged a swift-moving iron lance, brilliant like the color of the sun, towards his enemy.

Then, the lord of Kulūta, drawing his bow, cut down the javelin with ten arrows and struck the Pāṇḍava with a javelin (śakti).

Then, taking up his bow which resounded like a great thundercloud, the enraged Pāṇḍava attacked the enemy's elephant with arrows.

That elephant, afflicted by a volley of arrows from Bhīmasena in battle, was being overpowered and could not stand firm, just like a cloud scattered by the wind.

Bhīmasena's king of elephants charged towards that elephant. That elephant was like a great cloud (megha) driven by a mighty wind, while the king of elephants himself was like a cloud (ambuda) scattered by the wind.
संनिवर्त्यात्मनो नागं क्षेमधूर्तिः प्रयत्नतः ।

Kshemadhurti, having carefully turned back his own elephant, then pierced Bhimasena, who was charging along with his elephant, with arrows.

Before his (Bhima's) elephant fell, Bhimasena jumped down and stood on the ground, then crushed the enemy's elephant with his mace.

From that agitated elephant, Vṛkodara (Bhīma) struck Kṣemadhūrti with a mace, as Kṣemadhūrti, having dismounted (from it), was approaching (him) with an upraised sword.

He, struck down, fell lifeless with his sword near his elephant, just as a lion struck by a thunderbolt falls near a mountain shattered by a thunderbolt.
