वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तेऽलंकृताः कुण्डलिनो युवानः परस्परं स्पर्धमानाः समेताः ।
अस्त्रं बलं चात्मनि मन्यमानाः सर्वे समुत्पेतुरहंकृतेन ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
te'laṁkṛtāḥ kuṇḍalino yuvānaḥ; parasparaṁ spardhamānāḥ sametāḥ ,
astraṁ balaṁ cātmani manyamānāḥ; sarve samutpeturahaṁkṛtena.

kuṇḍalinaḥ yuvānaḥ parasparam spardhamānāḥ
sametāḥ | astram balam ca ātmani

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: They, adorned and wearing earrings, young men who had gathered and were competing with each other, all arose with ego (ahaṅkāra), confident in their weapons and their own strength (ātman).
रूपेण वीर्येण कुलेन चैव धर्मेण चैवापि च यौवनेन ।
समृद्धदर्पा मदवेगभिन्ना मत्ता यथा हैमवता गजेन्द्राः ॥२॥
2. rūpeṇa vīryeṇa kulena caiva; dharmeṇa caivāpi ca yauvanena ,
samṛddhadarpā madavegabhinnā; mattā yathā haimavatā gajendrāḥ.

2. By their beauty, valor, lineage, and indeed by their intrinsic nature (dharma) and youth, they were filled with abundant pride and shattered by the rush of intoxication, like mighty elephants from the Himalayas, maddened.
परस्परं स्पर्धया प्रेक्षमाणाः संकल्पजेनापि परिप्लुताङ्गाः ।
कृष्णा ममैषेत्यभिभाषमाणा नृपासनेभ्यः सहसोपतस्थुः ॥३॥
3. parasparaṁ spardhayā prekṣamāṇāḥ; saṁkalpajenāpi pariplutāṅgāḥ ,
kṛṣṇā mamaiṣetyabhibhāṣamāṇā; nṛpāsanebhyaḥ sahasopatasthuḥ.
3. parasparam spardhayā prekṣamāṇāḥ
saṅkalpajena api pariplutāṅgāḥ
kṛṣṇā mama eṣā iti abhibhāṣamāṇā
nṛpa-āsanebhyaḥ sahasā upatasthenuḥ
3. Gazing at each other with rivalry, their bodies overwhelmed even by desire (saṅkalpa-ja), they declared, "Kṛṣṇā is mine!" and suddenly rose from their royal seats.
ते क्षत्रिया रङ्गगताः समेता जिगीषमाणा द्रुपदात्मजां ताम् ।
चकाशिरे पर्वतराजकन्यामुमां यथा देवगणाः समेताः ॥४॥
4. te kṣatriyā raṅgagatāḥ sametā; jigīṣamāṇā drupadātmajāṁ tām ,
cakāśire parvatarājakanyā;mumāṁ yathā devagaṇāḥ sametāḥ.
4. te kṣatriyāḥ raṅgagātāḥ sametāḥ jigīṣamāṇāḥ drupada-ātmajām
tām cakāśire parvatarāja-kanyām umām yathā devagaṇāḥ sametāḥ
4. Those kshatriyas, having gathered in the arena, eager to win Drupada's daughter, shone like the assembled hosts of gods around Umā, the daughter of the mountain king.
कन्दर्पबाणाभिनिपीडिताङ्गाः कृष्णागतैस्ते हृदयैर्नरेन्द्राः ।
रङ्गावतीर्णा द्रुपदात्मजार्थं द्वेष्यान्हि चक्रुः सुहृदोऽपि तत्र ॥५॥
5. kandarpabāṇābhinipīḍitāṅgāḥ; kṛṣṇāgataiste hṛdayairnarendrāḥ ,
raṅgāvatīrṇā drupadātmajārthaṁ; dveṣyānhi cakruḥ suhṛdo'pi tatra.
5. kandarpa-bāṇa-abhnipīḍita-aṅgāḥ
kṛṣṇā-gataiḥ te hṛdayaiḥ narā-indrāḥ
raṅga-avatīrṇāḥ drupada-ātmajā-artham
dveṣyān hi cakruḥ suhṛdaḥ api tatra
5. Those kings, whose bodies were afflicted by the arrows of the god of love (kandarpa), and whose hearts were fixed on Kṛṣṇā, had descended into the arena for the sake of Drupada's daughter. There, they even considered their friends as enemies.
अथाययुर्देवगणा विमानै रुद्रादित्या वसवोऽथाश्विनौ च ।
साध्याश्च सर्वे मरुतस्तथैव यमं पुरस्कृत्य धनेश्वरं च ॥६॥
6. athāyayurdevagaṇā vimānai; rudrādityā vasavo'thāśvinau ca ,
sādhyāśca sarve marutastathaiva; yamaṁ puraskṛtya dhaneśvaraṁ ca.
6. atha āyayur devagaṇāḥ vimānaiḥ
rudra-ādityāḥ vasavaḥ atha aśvinau
ca sādhyāḥ ca sarve marutaḥ tathā
eva yamam puraskṛtya dhaneśvaram ca
6. Then came the hosts of gods in their celestial chariots: the Rudras, Adityas, Vasus, and the two Ashvins. Also, all the Sadhyas and Maruts came, placing Yama and the lord of wealth (Kubera) at their forefront.
दैत्याः सुपर्णाश्च महोरगाश्च देवर्षयो गुह्यकाश्चारणाश्च ।
विश्वावसुर्नारदपर्वतौ च गन्धर्वमुख्याश्च सहाप्सरोभिः ॥७॥
7. daityāḥ suparṇāśca mahoragāśca; devarṣayo guhyakāścāraṇāśca ,
viśvāvasurnāradaparvatau ca; gandharvamukhyāśca sahāpsarobhiḥ.

viśvāvasuḥ nārada-parvatau ca
gandharvamukhyāḥ ca saha apsarobhiḥ
7. Demons, great birds, great serpents, divine sages, Guhyakas, and Caraṇas; Viśvāvasu, Nārada and Parvata; and chief Gandharvas together with Apsaras (celestial nymphs) were present.
हलायुधस्तत्र च केशवश्च वृष्ण्यन्धकाश्चैव यथा प्रधानाः ।
प्रेक्षां स्म चक्रुर्यदुपुंगवास्ते स्थिताश्च कृष्णस्य मते बभूवुः ॥८॥
8. halāyudhastatra ca keśavaśca; vṛṣṇyandhakāścaiva yathā pradhānāḥ ,
prekṣāṁ sma cakruryadupuṁgavāste; sthitāśca kṛṣṇasya mate babhūvuḥ.

vṛṣṇyandhakāḥ ca eva yathā pradhānāḥ
prekṣām sma cakruḥ yadupuṅgavāḥ te
sthitāḥ ca kṛṣṇasya mate babhūvuḥ
8. Baladeva (Halāyudha) and Keśava (Krishna) were present there, along with the prominent Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; these foremost among the Yadus watched the event and stood in agreement with Krishna's opinion.
दृष्ट्वा हि तान्मत्तगजेन्द्ररूपान्पञ्चाभिपद्मानिव वारणेन्द्रान् ।
भस्मावृताङ्गानिव हव्यवाहान्पार्थान्प्रदध्यौ स यदुप्रवीरः ॥९॥
9. dṛṣṭvā hi tānmattagajendrarūpā;npañcābhipadmāniva vāraṇendrān ,
bhasmāvṛtāṅgāniva havyavāhā;npārthānpradadhyau sa yadupravīraḥ.
9. dṛṣṭvā hi tān mattagajendrarūpān
pañcābhipadmān iva vāraṇendrān
bhasmāvṛtāṅgān iva havyavāhān
pārthān pradadhyau saḥ yadupravīraḥ
9. Having indeed seen them - the Pārthas - who were like maddened, mighty elephants, resembling five magnificent great elephants, and like blazing fires (havyavāhān) with their bodies covered by ashes, that foremost hero of the Yadus (Krishna) pondered deeply.
शशंस रामाय युधिष्ठिरं च भीमं च जिष्णुं च यमौ च वीरौ ।
शनैः शनैस्तांश्च निरीक्ष्य रामो जनार्दनं प्रीतमना ददर्श ॥१०॥
10. śaśaṁsa rāmāya yudhiṣṭhiraṁ ca; bhīmaṁ ca jiṣṇuṁ ca yamau ca vīrau ,
śanaiḥ śanaistāṁśca nirīkṣya rāmo; janārdanaṁ prītamanā dadarśa.
10. śaśaṃsa rāmāya yudhiṣṭhiraṃ ca
bhīmaṃ ca jiṣṇuṃ ca yamau ca vīrau
śanaiḥ śanaiḥ tān ca nirīkṣya
rāmaḥ janārdanaṃ prītamanaḥ dadarśa
10. He (Krishna) recounted about Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīma, Jiṣṇu (Arjuna), and the two heroic Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva) to Balarama. Balarama, having then slowly observed them, looked at Janārdana (Krishna) with a joyful mind.
अन्ये तु नानानृपपुत्रपौत्राः कृष्णागतैर्नेत्रमनःस्वभावैः ।
व्यायच्छमाना ददृशुर्भ्रमन्तीं संदष्टदन्तच्छदताम्रवक्त्राः ॥११॥
11. anye tu nānānṛpaputrapautrāḥ; kṛṣṇāgatairnetramanaḥsvabhāvaiḥ ,
vyāyacchamānā dadṛśurbhramantīṁ; saṁdaṣṭadantacchadatāmravaktrāḥ.
11. anye tu nānānṛpaputrapautrāḥ
kṛṣṇāgataiḥ netramanaḥsvabhāvaiḥ
vyāyacchamānāḥ dadṛśuḥ bhramantīṃ
saṃdaṣṭadantacchadatamravaktrāḥ
11. However, other various princes and grandsons of kings, with their eyes, minds, and entire disposition focused on Krishna, struggled to see the revolving target. They had bitten their lips, and their faces were flushed with effort.
तथैव पार्थाः पृथुबाहवस्ते वीरौ यमौ चैव महानुभावौ ।
तां द्रौपदीं प्रेक्ष्य तदा स्म सर्वे कन्दर्पबाणाभिहता बभूवुः ॥१२॥
12. tathaiva pārthāḥ pṛthubāhavaste; vīrau yamau caiva mahānubhāvau ,
tāṁ draupadīṁ prekṣya tadā sma sarve; kandarpabāṇābhihatā babhūvuḥ.
12. tathā eva pārthāḥ pṛthubāhavaḥ te
vīrau yamau ca eva mahānubhāvau
tām draupadīm prekṣya tadā sma
sarve kandarpabāṇābhihatāḥ babhūvuḥ
12. Similarly, those broad-shouldered Pāṇḍavas, and the two heroic and highly glorious twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), all of them, upon seeing Draupadī then, became smitten by the arrows of the god of love.
देवर्षिगन्धर्वसमाकुलं तत्सुपर्णनागासुरसिद्धजुष्टम् ।
दिव्येन गन्धेन समाकुलं च दिव्यैश्च माल्यैरवकीर्यमाणम् ॥१३॥
13. devarṣigandharvasamākulaṁ ta;tsuparṇanāgāsurasiddhajuṣṭam ,
divyena gandhena samākulaṁ ca; divyaiśca mālyairavakīryamāṇam.
13. devardṣigandharvasamākulam tat
suparṇanāgāsurasiddhajuṣṭam
divyena gandhena samākulam ca
divyaiḥ ca mālyaiḥ avakīryamāṇam
13. That sky (or arena) was filled with gods, sages, and gandharvas, frequented by suparṇas, nāgas, asuras, and siddhas. It was also imbued with a divine fragrance and being showered with divine garlands.
महास्वनैर्दुन्दुभिनादितैश्च बभूव तत्संकुलमन्तरिक्षम् ।
विमानसंबाधमभूत्समन्तात्सवेणुवीणापणवानुनादम् ॥१४॥
14. mahāsvanairdundubhināditaiśca; babhūva tatsaṁkulamantarikṣam ,
vimānasaṁbādhamabhūtsamantā;tsaveṇuvīṇāpaṇavānunādam.
14. mahāsvanaiḥ dundubhināditaiḥ ca babhūva tat saṅkulam antarikṣam
vimānasaṃbādham abhūt samantāt saveṇuvīṇapaṇavānunādam
14. That sky became crowded with loud sounds and the beats of drums. All around, it became congested with celestial vehicles and resonant with the echoes of flutes, lutes, and small drums.
ततस्तु ते राजगणाः क्रमेण कृष्णानिमित्तं नृप विक्रमन्तः ।
तत्कार्मुकं संहननोपपन्नं सज्यं न शेकुस्तरसापि कर्तुम् ॥१५॥
15. tatastu te rājagaṇāḥ krameṇa; kṛṣṇānimittaṁ nṛpa vikramantaḥ ,
tatkārmukaṁ saṁhananopapannaṁ; sajyaṁ na śekustarasāpi kartum.
15. tataḥ tu te rājagaṇāḥ krameṇa
kṛṣṇānimittam nṛpa vikramantaḥ
tat kārmukam saṃhananopapannam
sajyam na śekuḥ tarasā api kartum
15. Then, O king, those groups of kings, successively exerting themselves for Draupadī's sake, were not able to even string that powerful bow, not even with force.
ते विक्रमन्तः स्फुरता दृढेन निष्कृष्यमाणा धनुषा नरेन्द्राः ।
विचेष्टमाना धरणीतलस्था दीना अदृश्यन्त विभग्नचित्ताः ॥१६॥
16. te vikramantaḥ sphuratā dṛḍhena; niṣkṛṣyamāṇā dhanuṣā narendrāḥ ,
viceṣṭamānā dharaṇītalasthā; dīnā adṛśyanta vibhagnacittāḥ.
16. te vikramantaḥ sphuratā dṛḍhena
niṣkṛṣyamāṇāḥ dhanuṣā narendrāḥ
viceṣṭamānāḥ dharaṇītalasthāḥ
dīnāḥ adṛśyanta vibhagnacittāḥ
16. Those kings, exerting themselves, were seen being dragged by the strong, trembling bow; they struggled on the ground, miserable and disheartened.
हाहाकृतं तद्धनुषा दृढेन निष्पिष्टभग्नाङ्गदकुण्डलं च ।
कृष्णानिमित्तं विनिवृत्तभावं राज्ञां तदा मण्डलमार्तमासीत् ॥१७॥
17. hāhākṛtaṁ taddhanuṣā dṛḍhena; niṣpiṣṭabhagnāṅgadakuṇḍalaṁ ca ,
kṛṣṇānimittaṁ vinivṛttabhāvaṁ; rājñāṁ tadā maṇḍalamārtamāsīt.
17. hāhākṛtam tat dhanuṣā dṛḍhena
niṣpiṣṭabhagnāṅgadakuṇḍalam ca
kṛṣṇānimittam vinivṛttabhāvam
rājñām tadā maṇḍalam ārtam āsīt
17. At that time, the assembly of kings, whose armlets and earrings were crushed and broken by that strong bow, was distressed and filled with cries of "Haha!", their intentions having turned away from Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī).
तस्मिंस्तु संभ्रान्तजने समाजे निक्षिप्तवादेषु नराधिपेषु ।
कुन्तीसुतो जिष्णुरियेष कर्तुं सज्यं धनुस्तत्सशरं स वीरः ॥१८॥
18. tasmiṁstu saṁbhrāntajane samāje; nikṣiptavādeṣu narādhipeṣu ,
kuntīsuto jiṣṇuriyeṣa kartuṁ; sajyaṁ dhanustatsaśaraṁ sa vīraḥ.
18. tasmin tu saṃbhrāntajane samāje
nikṣiptavādeṣu narādhipeṣu
kuntīsutaḥ jiṣṇuḥ iyeṣa kartum sajyam
dhanuḥ tat saśaram saḥ vīraḥ
18. But while that assembly was in a state of confusion and the kings had abandoned their claims, that hero, Arjuna (Jiṣṇu), the son of Kunti, desired to string that bow along with its arrow.
