नारद उवाच ।
एवमुक्तः सुपर्णेन तथ्यं वचनमुत्तमम् ।
विमृश्यावहितो राजा निश्चित्य च पुनः पुनः ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
evamuktaḥ suparṇena tathyaṁ vacanamuttamam ,
vimṛśyāvahito rājā niścitya ca punaḥ punaḥ.

1. Nārada said: Having been addressed thus by Suparṇa with these true and excellent words, the king, after reflecting attentively and repeatedly ascertaining (their import), (prepared to respond).
यष्टा क्रतुसहस्राणां दाता दानपतिः प्रभुः ।
ययातिर्वत्सकाशीश इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. yaṣṭā kratusahasrāṇāṁ dātā dānapatiḥ prabhuḥ ,
yayātirvatsakāśīśa idaṁ vacanamabravīt.

yayātiḥ vatsakāśīśa idam vacanam abravīt

2. O lord of Vatsa and Kashi (vatsakāśīśa), King Yayati, who had performed thousands of Vedic rituals (kratu), was a great giver, a lord of charity (dānapati), and a mighty ruler; he spoke these words.
दृष्ट्वा प्रियसखं तार्क्ष्यं गालवं च द्विजर्षभम् ।
निदर्शनं च तपसो भिक्षां श्लाघ्यां च कीर्तिताम् ॥३॥
3. dṛṣṭvā priyasakhaṁ tārkṣyaṁ gālavaṁ ca dvijarṣabham ,
nidarśanaṁ ca tapaso bhikṣāṁ ślāghyāṁ ca kīrtitām.
3. dṛṣṭvā priya-sakham tārkṣyam gālavam ca dvija-ṛṣabham
| nidarśanam ca tapasaḥ bhikṣām ślāghyām ca kīrtitām
3. Having seen his dear friend Tārkṣya, and Gālava - the foremost among the twice-born (dvija) - as an example of austerity (tapas), and having considered the extolled, praiseworthy alms...
अतीत्य च नृपानन्यानादित्यकुलसंभवान् ।
मत्सकाशमनुप्राप्तावेतौ बुद्धिमवेक्ष्य च ॥४॥
4. atītya ca nṛpānanyānādityakulasaṁbhavān ,
matsakāśamanuprāptāvetau buddhimavekṣya ca.
4. atītya ca nṛpān anyān ādityakulasambhāvān mat
sakāśam anuprāptau etau buddhim avekṣya ca
4. These two, having surpassed other kings - even those born in the solar dynasty - and having observed their intelligence, have arrived in my presence.
अद्य मे सफलं जन्म तारितं चाद्य मे कुलम् ।
अद्यायं तारितो देशो मम तार्क्ष्य त्वयानघ ॥५॥
5. adya me saphalaṁ janma tāritaṁ cādya me kulam ,
adyāyaṁ tārito deśo mama tārkṣya tvayānagha.
5. adya me saphalam janma tāritam ca adya me kulam
adya ayam tāritaḥ deśaḥ mama tārkṣya tvayā anagha
5. Today my birth has become fruitful, and today my family line has been delivered. Today, O sinless Tārkṣya, this land of mine has been delivered by you.
वक्तुमिच्छामि तु सखे यथा जानासि मां पुरा ।
न तथा वित्तवानस्मि क्षीणं वित्तं हि मे सखे ॥६॥
6. vaktumicchāmi tu sakhe yathā jānāsi māṁ purā ,
na tathā vittavānasmi kṣīṇaṁ vittaṁ hi me sakhe.
6. vaktum icchāmi tu sakhe yathā jānāsi mām purā na
tathā vittavān asmi kṣīṇam vittam hi me sakhe
6. But, O friend, I wish to tell you that I am no longer as wealthy as you knew me to be before, for my wealth has indeed dwindled, O friend.
न च शक्तोऽस्मि ते कर्तुं मोघमागमनं खग ।
न चाशामस्य विप्रर्षेर्वितथां कर्तुमुत्सहे ॥७॥
7. na ca śakto'smi te kartuṁ moghamāgamanaṁ khaga ,
na cāśāmasya viprarṣervitathāṁ kartumutsahe.
7. na ca śaktaḥ asmi te kartum mogham āgamanam khaga
na ca āśām asya viprarṣeḥ vitathām kartum utsahe
7. O bird, I am not able to make your arrival in vain. And I also cannot bear to make this Brahmin sage's hope futile.
तत्तु दास्यामि यत्कार्यमिदं संपादयिष्यति ।
अभिगम्य हताशो हि निवृत्तो दहते कुलम् ॥८॥
8. tattu dāsyāmi yatkāryamidaṁ saṁpādayiṣyati ,
abhigamya hatāśo hi nivṛtto dahate kulam.
8. tat tu dāsyāmi yat kāryam idam saṃpādayiṣyati
abhigamya hatāśaḥ hi nivṛttaḥ dahate kulam
8. Indeed, I will give that which will accomplish this task. For one whose hope is destroyed, having returned (unsuccessful), burns (brings ruin to) his family.
नातः परं वैनतेय किंचित्पापिष्ठमुच्यते ।
यथाशानाशनं लोके देहि नास्तीति वा वचः ॥९॥
9. nātaḥ paraṁ vainateya kiṁcitpāpiṣṭhamucyate ,
yathāśānāśanaṁ loke dehi nāstīti vā vacaḥ.
9. na ataḥ param vainateya kiñcit pāpiṣṭham ucyate
yathā āśā nāśanam loke dehi na asti iti vā vacaḥ
9. O son of Vinatā (Garuḍa), nothing in this world is said to be more sinful than the destruction of hope, or the declaration 'Give! There is nothing (to give)'.
हताशो ह्यकृतार्थः सन्हतः संभावितो नरः ।
हिनस्ति तस्य पुत्रांश्च पौत्रांश्चाकुर्वतोऽर्थिनाम् ॥१०॥
10. hatāśo hyakṛtārthaḥ sanhataḥ saṁbhāvito naraḥ ,
hinasti tasya putrāṁśca pautrāṁścākurvato'rthinām.
10. hatāśaḥ hi akṛtārthaḥ san hataḥ saṃbhāvitaḥ naraḥ
hinasti tasya putrān ca pautrān ca akurvataḥ arthinām
10. Indeed, a person whose hopes are destroyed and who is unsuccessful, even if (formerly) esteemed, is ruined. Such a person harms the sons and grandsons of those who do not assist petitioners.
तस्माच्चतुर्णां वंशानां स्थापयित्री सुता मम ।
इयं सुरसुतप्रख्या सर्वधर्मोपचायिनी ॥११॥
11. tasmāccaturṇāṁ vaṁśānāṁ sthāpayitrī sutā mama ,
iyaṁ surasutaprakhyā sarvadharmopacāyinī.
11. tasmāt caturṇām vaṃśānām sthāpayitrī sutā
mama iyam surasutaprakhyā sarvadharmopacāyinī
11. Therefore, my daughter is the establisher of the four lineages. She is renowned like a divine son, accumulating all virtues (dharma).
सदा देवमनुष्याणामसुराणां च गालव ।
काङ्क्षिता रूपतो बाला सुता मे प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥१२॥
12. sadā devamanuṣyāṇāmasurāṇāṁ ca gālava ,
kāṅkṣitā rūpato bālā sutā me pratigṛhyatām.
12. sadā devamanuṣyāṇām asurāṇām ca gālava
kāṅkṣitā rūpataḥ bālā sutā me pratigṛhyatām
12. O Gālava, please accept my daughter, a young woman who is always desired by gods, humans, and asuras for her beauty.
अस्याः शुल्कं प्रदास्यन्ति नृपा राज्यमपि ध्रुवम् ।
किं पुनः श्यामकर्णानां हयानां द्वे चतुःशते ॥१३॥
13. asyāḥ śulkaṁ pradāsyanti nṛpā rājyamapi dhruvam ,
kiṁ punaḥ śyāmakarṇānāṁ hayānāṁ dve catuḥśate.
13. asyāḥ śulkam pradāsyanti nṛpāḥ rājyam api dhruvam
kim punaḥ śyāmakarṇānām hayānām dve catuḥśate
13. Kings will certainly offer her a bride-price, even a kingdom. How much more will they offer two times four hundred (800) black-eared horses?
स भवान्प्रतिगृह्णातु ममेमां माधवीं सुताम् ।
अहं दौहित्रवान्स्यां वै वर एष मम प्रभो ॥१४॥
14. sa bhavānpratigṛhṇātu mamemāṁ mādhavīṁ sutām ,
ahaṁ dauhitravānsyāṁ vai vara eṣa mama prabho.
14. saḥ bhavān pratigṛhṇātu mama imām mādhavīm sutām
aham dauhitravān syām vai varaḥ eṣaḥ mama prabho
14. O lord, please accept this daughter of mine, Mādhavī. My wish is that I may indeed have grandsons through her.
प्रतिगृह्य च तां कन्यां गालवः सह पक्षिणा ।
पुनर्द्रक्ष्याव इत्युक्त्वा प्रतस्थे सह कन्यया ॥१५॥
15. pratigṛhya ca tāṁ kanyāṁ gālavaḥ saha pakṣiṇā ,
punardrakṣyāva ityuktvā pratasthe saha kanyayā.
15. pratigṛhya ca tām kanyām gālavaḥ saha pakṣiṇā
punar drakṣyāva iti uktvā pratasthe saha kanyayā
15. Having accepted that maiden, Gālava, along with the bird, said, 'We two shall meet again,' and then departed with the maiden.
उपलब्धमिदं द्वारमश्वानामिति चाण्डजः ।
उक्त्वा गालवमापृच्छ्य जगाम भवनं स्वकम् ॥१६॥
16. upalabdhamidaṁ dvāramaśvānāmiti cāṇḍajaḥ ,
uktvā gālavamāpṛcchya jagāma bhavanaṁ svakam.
16. upalabdham idam dvāram aśvānām iti cāṇḍajaḥ
uktvā gālavam āpṛcchya jagāma bhavanam svakam
16. Caṇḍaja, having said, "This is the available means for (obtaining) horses," bid farewell to Gālava and went to his own dwelling.
गते पतगराजे तु गालवः सह कन्यया ।
चिन्तयानः क्षमं दाने राज्ञां वै शुल्कतोऽगमत् ॥१७॥
17. gate patagarāje tu gālavaḥ saha kanyayā ,
cintayānaḥ kṣamaṁ dāne rājñāṁ vai śulkato'gamat.
17. gate patagarāje tu gālavaḥ saha kanyayā
cintayānaḥ kṣamam dāne rājñām vai śulkataḥ agamat
17. Indeed, after the king of birds had departed, Gālava, along with the maiden, pondering what would be a suitable offering (dāna) as a tribute to kings, then departed.
सोऽगच्छन्मनसेक्ष्वाकुं हर्यश्वं राजसत्तमम् ।
अयोध्यायां महावीर्यं चतुरङ्गबलान्वितम् ॥१८॥
18. so'gacchanmanasekṣvākuṁ haryaśvaṁ rājasattamam ,
ayodhyāyāṁ mahāvīryaṁ caturaṅgabalānvitam.
18. saḥ agacchat manasā ikṣvākum haryaśvam rājasattamam
ayodhyāyām mahāvīryam caturaṅgabalānvitam
18. He (Gālava) mentally approached Ikṣvāku Haryaśva, the best among kings, who was greatly valorous, and endowed with a four-limbed army, in Ayodhyā.
कोशधान्यबलोपेतं प्रियपौरं द्विजप्रियम् ।
प्रजाभिकामं शाम्यन्तं कुर्वाणं तप उत्तमम् ॥१९॥
19. kośadhānyabalopetaṁ priyapauraṁ dvijapriyam ,
prajābhikāmaṁ śāmyantaṁ kurvāṇaṁ tapa uttamam.
19. kośadhānyabalopetam priyapauram dvijapriyam
prajābhikāmam śāmyantam kurvāṇam tapaḥ uttamam
19. (He was) endowed with a treasury, grain, and military strength, dear to his citizens, beloved by the twice-born (dvija), desiring the welfare of his subjects, tranquil, and performing excellent austerity (tapas).
तमुपागम्य विप्रः स हर्यश्वं गालवोऽब्रवीत् ।
कन्येयं मम राजेन्द्र प्रसवैः कुलवर्धिनी ॥२०॥
20. tamupāgamya vipraḥ sa haryaśvaṁ gālavo'bravīt ,
kanyeyaṁ mama rājendra prasavaiḥ kulavardhinī.
20. tam upāgamya vipraḥ saḥ haryaśvam gālavaḥ abravīt
kanyā iyam mama rājendra prasavaiḥ kulavardhinī
20. Approaching him, that Brahmin Gālava said to King Haryaśva, "O King (rājenrda), this daughter of mine enhances the family through her progeny."
इयं शुल्केन भार्यार्थे हर्यश्व प्रतिगृह्यताम् ।
शुल्कं ते कीर्तयिष्यामि तच्छ्रुत्वा संप्रधार्यताम् ॥२१॥
21. iyaṁ śulkena bhāryārthe haryaśva pratigṛhyatām ,
śulkaṁ te kīrtayiṣyāmi tacchrutvā saṁpradhāryatām.
21. iyam śulkena bhāryārthe haryaśva pratigṛhyatām
śulkam te kīrtayiṣyāmi tat śrutvā sampradhāryatām
21. "O Haryaśva, let this girl be accepted as a wife for a price. I will declare the price to you; having heard that, let it be carefully considered."
