नारद उवाच ।
सूतोऽयं मातलिर्नाम शक्रस्य दयितः सुहृत् ।
शुचिः शीलगुणोपेतस्तेजस्वी वीर्यवान्बली ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
sūto'yaṁ mātalirnāma śakrasya dayitaḥ suhṛt ,
śuciḥ śīlaguṇopetastejasvī vīryavānbalī.

suhṛt śuciḥ śīlaguṇopetaḥ tejasvī vīryavān balī
1. Nārada said: This charioteer, named Mātali, is Indra's dear friend. He is pure, endowed with good conduct and virtues, radiant, valorous, and mighty.
शक्रस्यायं सखा चैव मन्त्री सारथिरेव च ।
अल्पान्तरप्रभावश्च वासवेन रणे रणे ॥२॥
2. śakrasyāyaṁ sakhā caiva mantrī sārathireva ca ,
alpāntaraprabhāvaśca vāsavena raṇe raṇe.
2. śakrasya ayam sakhā ca eva mantrī sārathiḥ eva
ca alpāntaraprabhāvaḥ ca vāsavena raṇe raṇe
2. He is indeed a friend, minister, and charioteer of Indra. And in every battle, his power differs only slightly from Indra's.
अयं हरिसहस्रेण युक्तं जैत्रं रथोत्तमम् ।
देवासुरेषु युद्धेषु मनसैव नियच्छति ॥३॥
3. ayaṁ harisahasreṇa yuktaṁ jaitraṁ rathottamam ,
devāsureṣu yuddheṣu manasaiva niyacchati.
3. ayam harisahasreṇa yuktam jaitram rathottamam
devāsureṣu yuddheṣu manasā eva niyacchati
3. He controls the best of victorious chariots, yoked with a thousand horses, in battles involving devas and asuras, solely by his mind.
अनेन विजितानश्वैर्दोर्भ्यां जयति वासवः ।
अनेन प्रहृते पूर्वं बलभित्प्रहरत्युत ॥४॥
4. anena vijitānaśvairdorbhyāṁ jayati vāsavaḥ ,
anena prahṛte pūrvaṁ balabhitpraharatyuta.
4. anena vijitān aśvaiḥ dorbhyām jayati vāsavaḥ
anena prahṛte pūrvam balabhit praharati uta
4. Through him (Mātali), Vāsava (Indra) achieves victory over the vanquished (enemies) using (Mātali's) chariots and (his own) two arms. Moreover, when he (Mātali) has struck first, then Balabhit (Indra) delivers his blow.
अस्य कन्या वरारोहा रूपेणासदृशी भुवि ।
सत्त्वशीलगुणोपेता गुणकेशीति विश्रुता ॥५॥
5. asya kanyā varārohā rūpeṇāsadṛśī bhuvi ,
sattvaśīlaguṇopetā guṇakeśīti viśrutā.
5. asya kanyā varārohā rūpeṇa asadṛśī bhuvi
sattvaśīlaguṇopetā guṇakeśī iti viśrutā
5. His daughter, exceptionally beautiful and unmatched in her looks on earth, is endowed with virtues and an excellent nature. She is renowned by the name Guṇakeśī.
तस्यास्य यत्नाच्चरतस्त्रैलोक्यममरद्युते ।
सुमुखो भवतः पौत्रो रोचते दुहितुः पतिः ॥६॥
6. tasyāsya yatnāccaratastrailokyamamaradyute ,
sumukho bhavataḥ pautro rocate duhituḥ patiḥ.
6. tasyāḥ asya yatnāt carataḥ trailokyam amaradyute
sumukhaḥ bhavataḥ pautraḥ rocate duhituḥ patiḥ
6. O splendor of the immortals (amaradyute), your handsome grandson, who diligently traverses the three worlds, is pleasing as a husband for her (Guṇakeśī).
यदि ते रोचते सौम्य भुजगोत्तम माचिरम् ।
क्रियतामार्यक क्षिप्रं बुद्धिः कन्याप्रतिग्रहे ॥७॥
7. yadi te rocate saumya bhujagottama māciram ,
kriyatāmāryaka kṣipraṁ buddhiḥ kanyāpratigrahe.
7. yadi te rocate saumya bhujagottama mā ciram
kriyatām āryaka kṣipram buddhiḥ kanyāpratigrahe
7. If it is pleasing to you, O gentle one, O best of serpents (bhujagottama), then, O venerable one (āryaka), do not delay! Let a swift decision be made regarding the acceptance of the maiden.
यथा विष्णुकुले लक्ष्मीर्यथा स्वाहा विभावसोः ।
कुले तव तथैवास्तु गुणकेशी सुमध्यमा ॥८॥
8. yathā viṣṇukule lakṣmīryathā svāhā vibhāvasoḥ ,
kule tava tathaivāstu guṇakeśī sumadhyamā.
8. yathā viṣṇukule lakṣmīḥ yathā svāhā vibhāvasoḥ
kule tava tathā eva astu guṇakeśī sumadhyamā
8. Just as Lakṣmī resides in the lineage of Viṣṇu, and just as Svāhā resides in the family of Vibhāvasu (the fire god), so too, let the beautiful Guṇakeśī (whose waist is slender) be in your lineage.
पौत्रस्यार्थे भवांस्तस्माद्गुणकेशीं प्रतीच्छतु ।
सदृशीं प्रतिरूपस्य वासवस्य शचीमिव ॥९॥
9. pautrasyārthe bhavāṁstasmādguṇakeśīṁ pratīcchatu ,
sadṛśīṁ pratirūpasya vāsavasya śacīmiva.
9. pautrasya arthe bhavān tasmāt guṇakeśīm pratīcchatu
sadṛśīm pratirūpasya vāsavasya śacīm iva
9. Therefore, for the sake of your grandson, your honor should accept Guṇakeśī, who is as fitting a match as Śacī is to Vāsava (Indra).
पितृहीनमपि ह्येनं गुणतो वरयामहे ।
बहुमानाच्च भवतस्तथैवैरावतस्य च ।
सुमुखस्य गुणैश्चैव शीलशौचदमादिभिः ॥१०॥
10. pitṛhīnamapi hyenaṁ guṇato varayāmahe ,
bahumānācca bhavatastathaivairāvatasya ca ,
sumukhasya guṇaiścaiva śīlaśaucadamādibhiḥ.
10. pitṛhīnam api hi enam guṇataḥ
varayāmahe bahumānāt ca bhavataḥ tathā
eva airāvatasya ca sumukhasya
guṇaiḥ ca eva śīlaśaucadamādibhiḥ
10. Indeed, we choose him, even though he is fatherless, based on his virtues. We do so also out of great respect for your honor, and likewise for Airāvata, and because of Sumukha's good qualities like noble character, purity, and self-restraint.
अभिगम्य स्वयं कन्यामयं दातुं समुद्यतः ।
मातलेस्तस्य संमानं कर्तुमर्हो भवानपि ॥११॥
11. abhigamya svayaṁ kanyāmayaṁ dātuṁ samudyataḥ ,
mātalestasya saṁmānaṁ kartumarho bhavānapi.
11. abhigamya svayam kanyām ayam dātum samudyataḥ
mātaleḥ tasya sammānam kartum arhaḥ bhavān api
11. This [person] has personally come and is prepared to give the girl. Your honor should also grant respect to Mātali.
कण्व उवाच ।
स तु दीनः प्रहृष्टश्च प्राह नारदमार्यकः ।
व्रियमाणे तथा पौत्रे पुत्रे च निधनं गते ॥१२॥
12. kaṇva uvāca ,
sa tu dīnaḥ prahṛṣṭaśca prāha nāradamāryakaḥ ,
vriyamāṇe tathā pautre putre ca nidhanaṁ gate.
12. kaṇvaḥ uvāca sa tu dīnaḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ ca prāha nāradam
āryakaḥ vriyamāṇe tathā pautre putre ca nidhanam gate
12. Kaṇva said: Then Āryaka, both dejected and joyful, spoke to Nārada when his grandson was being sought for marriage, and his own son had passed away.
न मे नैतद्बहुमतं देवर्षे वचनं तव ।
सखा शक्रस्य संयुक्तः कस्यायं नेप्सितो भवेत् ॥१३॥
13. na me naitadbahumataṁ devarṣe vacanaṁ tava ,
sakhā śakrasya saṁyuktaḥ kasyāyaṁ nepsito bhavet.
13. na me na etat bahumatam devarṣe vacanam tava sakhā
śakrasya saṃyuktaḥ kasya ayam na īpsitaḥ bhavet
13. O divine sage, your statement is not highly regarded by me. Who would not desire this person as a friend, especially when he is allied with Indra?
कारणस्य तु दौर्बल्याच्चिन्तयामि महामुने ।
अस्य देहकरस्तात मम पुत्रो महाद्युते ।
भक्षितो वैनतेयेन दुःखार्तास्तेन वै वयम् ॥१४॥
14. kāraṇasya tu daurbalyāccintayāmi mahāmune ,
asya dehakarastāta mama putro mahādyute ,
bhakṣito vainateyena duḥkhārtāstena vai vayam.
14. kāraṇasya tu daurbalyāt cintayāmi
mahāmune asya dehakaraḥ tāta mama
putraḥ mahādyute bhakṣitaḥ
vainateyena duḥkhārtāḥ tena vai vayam
14. O great sage, I am troubled due to the weakness of this reason. O venerable one, my son, this greatly radiant being, was devoured by Vainateya (Garuḍa). Therefore, we are indeed afflicted with sorrow.
पुनरेव च तेनोक्तं वैनतेयेन गच्छता ।
मासेनान्येन सुमुखं भक्षयिष्य इति प्रभो ॥१५॥
15. punareva ca tenoktaṁ vainateyena gacchatā ,
māsenānyena sumukhaṁ bhakṣayiṣya iti prabho.
15. punaḥ eva ca tena uktam vainateyena gacchata
māsena anyena sumukham bhakṣayişye iti prabho
15. And again, O Lord, as Vainateya (Garuḍa) was leaving, he said: "I will devour another handsome one within a month."
ध्रुवं तथा तद्भविता जानीमस्तस्य निश्चयम् ।
तेन हर्षः प्रनष्टो मे सुपर्णवचनेन वै ॥१६॥
16. dhruvaṁ tathā tadbhavitā jānīmastasya niścayam ,
tena harṣaḥ pranaṣṭo me suparṇavacanena vai.
16. dhruvam tathā tat bhavitā jānīmaḥ tasya niścayam
tena harṣaḥ pranaṣṭaḥ me suparṇavacanena vai
16. Surely, it will happen just as he said; we know his unwavering resolve. Therefore, my joy is indeed completely destroyed by the words of Suparṇa (Garuḍa).
मातलिस्त्वब्रवीदेनं बुद्धिरत्र कृता मया ।
जामातृभावेन वृतः सुमुखस्तव पुत्रजः ॥१७॥
17. mātalistvabravīdenaṁ buddhiratra kṛtā mayā ,
jāmātṛbhāvena vṛtaḥ sumukhastava putrajaḥ.
17. mātaliḥ tu abravīt enam buddhiḥ atra kṛtā mayā
jāmatṛbhāvena vṛtaḥ sumukhaḥ tava putrajaḥ
17. Mātali then said to him, 'I have devised a plan for this. Sumukha, your grandson, has been chosen as a son-in-law.'
सोऽयं मया च सहितो नारदेन च पन्नगः ।
त्रिलोकेशं सुरपतिं गत्वा पश्यतु वासवम् ॥१८॥
18. so'yaṁ mayā ca sahito nāradena ca pannagaḥ ,
trilokeśaṁ surapatiṁ gatvā paśyatu vāsavam.
18. saḥ ayam mayā ca sahitaḥ nāradena ca pannagaḥ
trilokeśam surapatim gatvā paśyatu vāsavam
18. This serpent, accompanied by me and Narada, should go and see Vasava (Indra), the lord of the three worlds and ruler of the gods.
शेषेणैवास्य कार्येण प्रज्ञास्याम्यहमायुषः ।
सुपर्णस्य विघाते च प्रयतिष्यामि सत्तम ॥१९॥
19. śeṣeṇaivāsya kāryeṇa prajñāsyāmyahamāyuṣaḥ ,
suparṇasya vighāte ca prayatiṣyāmi sattama.
19. śeṣeṇa eva asya kāryeṇa prajñāsyāmi aham āyuṣaḥ
suparṇasya vighāte ca prayatiṣyāmi sattama
19. Through this very matter, I will ascertain his (Sumukha's) lifespan. And, O most excellent one, I will make efforts for Suparna's (Garuda's) defeat.
सुमुखश्च मया सार्धं देवेशमभिगच्छतु ।
कार्यसंसाधनार्थाय स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु भुजंगम ॥२०॥
20. sumukhaśca mayā sārdhaṁ deveśamabhigacchatu ,
kāryasaṁsādhanārthāya svasti te'stu bhujaṁgama.
20. sumukhaḥ ca mayā sārdham deveśam abhigacchatu
kāryasaṃsādhanārthāya svasti te astu bhujaṅgama
20. And Sumukha, accompanied by me, should go to the lord of the gods (Indra). May there be well-being for you, O serpent, for the successful accomplishment of our purpose.
ततस्ते सुमुखं गृह्य सर्व एव महौजसः ।
ददृशुः शक्रमासीनं देवराजं महाद्युतिम् ॥२१॥
21. tataste sumukhaṁ gṛhya sarva eva mahaujasaḥ ,
dadṛśuḥ śakramāsīnaṁ devarājaṁ mahādyutim.
21. tataḥ te sumukham gṛhya sarve eva mahāujasaḥ
dadṛśuḥ śakram āsīnam devarājam mahādyutim
21. Then, all those mighty beings, holding Sumukha, saw Indra (śakra), the greatly radiant king of the gods, seated there.
संगत्या तत्र भगवान्विष्णुरासीच्चतुर्भुजः ।
ततस्तत्सर्वमाचख्यौ नारदो मातलिं प्रति ॥२२॥
22. saṁgatyā tatra bhagavānviṣṇurāsīccaturbhujaḥ ,
tatastatsarvamācakhyau nārado mātaliṁ prati.
22. saṃgatyā tatra bhagavān viṣṇuḥ āsīt caturbhujaḥ
tataḥ tat sarvam ācakhyau nāradaḥ mātaliṃ prati
22. There, Lord Vishnu (viṣṇu) was present, four-armed. Then, Narada recounted all that to Matali.
ततः पुरंदरं विष्णुरुवाच भुवनेश्वरम् ।
अमृतं दीयतामस्मै क्रियताममरैः समः ॥२३॥
23. tataḥ puraṁdaraṁ viṣṇuruvāca bhuvaneśvaram ,
amṛtaṁ dīyatāmasmai kriyatāmamaraiḥ samaḥ.
23. tataḥ purandaram viṣṇuḥ uvāca bhuvaneśvaram
amṛtam dīyatām asmai kriyatām amaraiḥ samaḥ
23. Then, Vishnu (viṣṇu) said to Purandara (Indra), the lord of the world: "Let the nectar (amṛta) be given to him, and let him be made equal to the immortals."
मातलिर्नारदश्चैव सुमुखश्चैव वासव ।
लभन्तां भवतः कामात्काममेतं यथेप्सितम् ॥२४॥
24. mātalirnāradaścaiva sumukhaścaiva vāsava ,
labhantāṁ bhavataḥ kāmātkāmametaṁ yathepsitam.
24. mātaliḥ nāradaḥ ca eva sumukhaḥ ca eva vāsava
labhantām bhavataḥ kāmāt kāmam etam yathā īpsitam
24. O Vasava (Indra), by your will, let Matali, Narada, and Sumukha obtain this wish (kāma) as they desire.
पुरंदरोऽथ संचिन्त्य वैनतेयपराक्रमम् ।
विष्णुमेवाब्रवीदेनं भवानेव ददात्विति ॥२५॥
25. puraṁdaro'tha saṁcintya vainateyaparākramam ,
viṣṇumevābravīdenaṁ bhavāneva dadātviti.
25. purandaraḥ atha saṃcintya vainateyaparākramam
viṣṇum eva abravīt enam bhavān eva dadātu iti
25. Then Indra, having carefully considered the immense power of Garuḍa, said to Viṣṇu, "Only Your Lordship should grant this."
विष्णुरुवाच ।
ईशस्त्वमसि लोकानां चराणामचराश्च ये ।
त्वया दत्तमदत्तं कः कर्तुमुत्सहते विभो ॥२६॥
26. viṣṇuruvāca ,
īśastvamasi lokānāṁ carāṇāmacarāśca ye ,
tvayā dattamadattaṁ kaḥ kartumutsahate vibho.
26. viṣṇuḥ uvāca īśaḥ tvam asi lokānām carāṇām acarāḥ ca
ye tvayā dattam adattam kaḥ kartum utsahate vibho
26. Viṣṇu said, "You are the lord of all worlds, both moving and unmoving. O all-pervading Lord, who would dare to render as ungiven that which has been granted by you?"
कण्व उवाच ।
प्रादाच्छक्रस्ततस्तस्मै पन्नगायायुरुत्तमम् ।
न त्वेनममृतप्राशं चकार बलवृत्रहा ॥२७॥
27. kaṇva uvāca ,
prādācchakrastatastasmai pannagāyāyuruttamam ,
na tvenamamṛtaprāśaṁ cakāra balavṛtrahā.
27. kaṇvaḥ uvāca prādāt śakraḥ tataḥ tasmai pannagāya āyuḥ
uttamam na tu enam amṛtaprāśam cakāra balavṛtrahā
27. Kaṇva said, "Then Indra granted the serpent long life. However, the slayer of Bala and Vṛtra did not make him an immortal (amṛtaprāśam)."
लब्ध्वा वरं तु सुमुखः सुमुखः संबभूव ह ।
कृतदारो यथाकामं जगाम च गृहान्प्रति ॥२८॥
28. labdhvā varaṁ tu sumukhaḥ sumukhaḥ saṁbabhūva ha ,
kṛtadāro yathākāmaṁ jagāma ca gṛhānprati.
28. labdhvā varam tu sumukhaḥ sumukhaḥ saṃbabhūva
ha kṛtadāraḥ yathākāmam jagāma ca gṛhān prati
28. Having obtained the boon, Sumukha (the serpent) indeed became cheerful (sumukha). And, having taken a wife, he went back to his home as he pleased.
नारदस्त्वार्यकश्चैव कृतकार्यौ मुदा युतौ ।
प्रतिजग्मतुरभ्यर्च्य देवराजं महाद्युतिम् ॥२९॥
29. nāradastvāryakaścaiva kṛtakāryau mudā yutau ,
pratijagmaturabhyarcya devarājaṁ mahādyutim.
29. nāradaḥ tu āryakaḥ ca eva kṛtakāryau mudā yutau
pratijagamatuḥ abhyarcya devarājam mahādyutim
29. Narada and Aryaka, having accomplished their task and filled with joy, returned after honoring the immensely glorious king of the gods.
