ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
आश्चर्यं नात्र संदेहः सुप्रीतोऽस्मि भुजंगम ।
अन्वर्थोपगतैर्वाक्यैः पन्थानं चास्मि दर्शितः ॥१॥
1. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
āścaryaṁ nātra saṁdehaḥ suprīto'smi bhujaṁgama ,
anvarthopagatairvākyaiḥ panthānaṁ cāsmi darśitaḥ.

1. The Brahmin said: "This is indeed a wonder; there is no doubt about it. O serpent (bhujaṅgama), I am very pleased. Through your appropriate and significant words, I have also been shown the path."
स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु गमिष्यामि साधो भुजगसत्तम ।
स्मरणीयोऽस्मि भवता संप्रेषणनियोजनैः ॥२॥
2. svasti te'stu gamiṣyāmi sādho bhujagasattama ,
smaraṇīyo'smi bhavatā saṁpreṣaṇaniyojanaiḥ.
2. svasti te astu gamiṣyāmi sādho bhujaṅgasattama
| smaraṇīyaḥ asmi bhavatā saṃpreṣaṇaniyojanaiḥ
2. svasti te astu sādho bhujaṅgasattama gamiṣyāmi
bhavatā saṃpreṣaṇaniyojanaiḥ smaraṇīyaḥ asmi
2. "May there be welfare for you, O virtuous one (sādho), best of serpents! I will depart. I should be remembered by you for assignments and commissions."
नाग उवाच ।
अनुक्त्वा मद्गतं कार्यं क्वेदानीं प्रस्थितो भवान् ।
उच्यतां द्विज यत्कार्यं यदर्थं त्वमिहागतः ॥३॥
3. nāga uvāca ,
anuktvā madgataṁ kāryaṁ kvedānīṁ prasthito bhavān ,
ucyatāṁ dvija yatkāryaṁ yadarthaṁ tvamihāgataḥ.
3. nāga uvāca | anuktvā madgatam kāryam kva idānīm prasthitaḥ
bhavān | ucyatām dvija yat kāryam yadartham tvam iha āgataḥ
3. nāga uvāca madgatam kāryam anuktvā bhavān idānīm kva
prasthitaḥ dvija yat kāryam yadartham tvam iha āgataḥ ucyatām
3. The Nāga said: "Without having told me the task that concerns me, where are you going now, Sir? O brahmin (dvija), let that task be stated, for which purpose you have come here."
उक्तानुक्ते कृते कार्ये मामामन्त्र्य द्विजर्षभ ।
मया प्रत्यभ्यनुज्ञातस्ततो यास्यसि ब्राह्मण ॥४॥
4. uktānukte kṛte kārye māmāmantrya dvijarṣabha ,
mayā pratyabhyanujñātastato yāsyasi brāhmaṇa.

mayā pratyabhyanujñātaḥ tataḥ yāsyasi brāhmaṇa
4. dvijarṣabha brāhmaṇa uktānukte kārye kṛte mām
āmantrya mayā pratyabhyanujñātaḥ tataḥ yāsyasi
4. O chief among the twice-born (dvijarṣabha), O Brahmin, after you have performed the tasks, both those explicitly stated and those implied, and having taken leave of me, you shall then depart once I have given my permission.
न हि मां केवलं दृष्ट्वा त्यक्त्वा प्रणयवानिह ।
गन्तुमर्हसि विप्रर्षे वृक्षमूलगतो यथा ॥५॥
5. na hi māṁ kevalaṁ dṛṣṭvā tyaktvā praṇayavāniha ,
gantumarhasi viprarṣe vṛkṣamūlagato yathā.
5. na hi mām kevalam dṛṣṭvā tyaktvā praṇayavān
iha gantum arhasi viprarṣe vṛkṣamūlagataḥ yathā
5. viprarṣe hi tvam praṇayavān iha mām kevalam dṛṣṭvā
tyaktvā yathā vṛkṣamūlagataḥ na gantum arhasi
5. Indeed, O sage among Brahmins (viprarṣe), you should not merely look at me and then depart from here, abandoning me, even though you are affectionate, just as one (might leave) after having briefly rested at the foot of a tree.
त्वयि चाहं द्विजश्रेष्ठ भवान्मयि न संशयः ।
लोकोऽयं भवतः सर्वः का चिन्ता मयि तेऽनघ ॥६॥
6. tvayi cāhaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha bhavānmayi na saṁśayaḥ ,
loko'yaṁ bhavataḥ sarvaḥ kā cintā mayi te'nagha.
6. tvayi ca aham dvijaśreṣṭha bhavān mayi na saṃśayaḥ
lokaḥ ayam bhavataḥ sarvaḥ kā cintā mayi te anagha
6. dvijaśreṣṭha anagha aham ca tvayi bhavān mayi saṃśayaḥ
na ayam sarvaḥ lokaḥ bhavataḥ mayi te kā cintā
6. O best among the twice-born (dvijaśreṣṭha), I am in you, and you are in me; there is no doubt about this. This whole world belongs to you. O sinless one (anagha), why then worry about me?
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
एवमेतन्महाप्राज्ञ विज्ञातार्थ भुजंगम ।
नातिरिक्तास्त्वया देवाः सर्वथैव यथातथम् ॥७॥
7. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
evametanmahāprājña vijñātārtha bhujaṁgama ,
nātiriktāstvayā devāḥ sarvathaiva yathātatham.
7. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca evam etat mahāprājña vijñātārtha bhujaṅgama
na atiriktāḥ tvayā devāḥ sarvathā eva yathātatham
7. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca mahāprājña vijñātārtha bhujaṅgama etat
evam devāḥ tvayā atiriktāḥ na sarvathā eva yathātatham
7. The Brahmin said: 'This is indeed so, O highly intelligent (mahāprājña) serpent, who understands the true meaning of things. The gods are certainly not superior to you in any way; this is truly and precisely the case.'
य एवाहं स एव त्वमेवमेतद्भुजंगम ।
अहं भवांश्च भूतानि सर्वे सर्वत्रगाः सदा ॥८॥
8. ya evāhaṁ sa eva tvamevametadbhujaṁgama ,
ahaṁ bhavāṁśca bhūtāni sarve sarvatragāḥ sadā.
8. yaḥ eva aham saḥ eva tvam evam etat bhujaṅgama
aham bhavān ca bhūtāni sarve sarvatragāḥ sadā
8. bhujaṅgama etat evam yaḥ aham eva saḥ tvam eva
aham ca bhavān ca sarve bhūtāni sadā sarvatragāḥ
8. That which is I, is indeed you, O serpent. This is how it is. I, you, and all beings (bhūtāni) are always omnipresent.
आसीत्तु मे भोगपते संशयः पुण्यसंचये ।
सोऽहमुञ्छव्रतं साधो चरिष्याम्यर्थदर्शनम् ॥९॥
9. āsīttu me bhogapate saṁśayaḥ puṇyasaṁcaye ,
so'hamuñchavrataṁ sādho cariṣyāmyarthadarśanam.
9. āsīt tu me bhogapate saṃśayaḥ puṇyasañcaye saḥ
aham uñchavratam sādho cariṣyāmi arthadarśanam
9. bhogapate me puṇyasañcaye saṃśayaḥ tu āsīt sādho
saḥ aham uñchavratam arthadarśanam cariṣyāmi
9. Indeed, O lord of serpents (bhogapati), I had a doubt regarding the accumulation of merit (puṇyasañcaya). Therefore, O virtuous one (sādhu), I shall observe the gleaning vow (uñchavrata), perceiving its true purpose.
एष मे निश्चयः साधो कृतः कारणवत्तरः ।
आमन्त्रयामि भद्रं ते कृतार्थोऽस्मि भुजंगम ॥१०॥
10. eṣa me niścayaḥ sādho kṛtaḥ kāraṇavattaraḥ ,
āmantrayāmi bhadraṁ te kṛtārtho'smi bhujaṁgama.
10. eṣaḥ me niścayaḥ sādho kṛtaḥ kāraṇavattaraḥ
āmantrayāmi bhadram te kṛtārthaḥ asmi bhujaṅgama
10. sādho me eṣaḥ niścayaḥ kāraṇavattaraḥ kṛtaḥ te
bhadram āmantrayāmi bhujaṅgama aham kṛtārthaḥ asmi
10. This resolve of mine, O virtuous one (sādhu), has been made with a more compelling reason. I bid you farewell; may good fortune be yours. O serpent, I am one whose purpose (artha) is fulfilled.
