शौनक उवाच ।
जाता वै भुजगास्तात वीर्यवन्तो दुरासदाः ।
शापं तं त्वथ विज्ञाय कृतवन्तो नु किं परम् ॥१॥
1. śaunaka uvāca ,
jātā vai bhujagāstāta vīryavanto durāsadāḥ ,
śāpaṁ taṁ tvatha vijñāya kṛtavanto nu kiṁ param.
1. śaunakaḥ uvāca jātāḥ vai bhujagāḥ tāta vīryavantaḥ
durāsadāḥ śāpam tam tu atha vijñāya kṛtavantaḥ nu kim param
1. Śaunaka said: O dear one, the serpents were indeed born powerful and formidable. But then, having understood that curse, what did they do next?
सूत उवाच ।
तेषां तु भगवाञ्शेषस्त्यक्त्वा कद्रूं महायशाः ।
तपो विपुलमातस्थे वायुभक्षो यतव्रतः ॥२॥
2. sūta uvāca ,
teṣāṁ tu bhagavāñśeṣastyaktvā kadrūṁ mahāyaśāḥ ,
tapo vipulamātasthe vāyubhakṣo yatavrataḥ.
2. sūtaḥ uvāca teṣām tu bhagavān śeṣaḥ tyaktvā kadrūm
mahāyaśāḥ tapaḥ vipulam ātasthe vāyubhakṣaḥ yatavrataḥ
2. Sūta said: But among them, the highly renowned and venerable Shesha, having abandoned Kadru, undertook great austerities, subsisting on air and disciplined in his vows.
गन्धमादनमासाद्य बदर्यां च तपोरतः ।
गोकर्णे पुष्करारण्ये तथा हिमवतस्तटे ॥३॥
3. gandhamādanamāsādya badaryāṁ ca taporataḥ ,
gokarṇe puṣkarāraṇye tathā himavatastaṭe.
3. gandhamādanam āsādya badaryām ca tapaḥ rataḥ
gokarṇe puṣkarāraṇye tathā himavataḥ taṭe
3. He engaged in austerities, having reached Gandhamadana, and in Badari, as well as in Gokarna, in the Pushkara forest, and on the slopes of the Himalayas.
तेषु तेषु च पुण्येषु तीर्थेष्वायतनेषु च ।
एकान्तशीली नियतः सततं विजितेन्द्रियः ॥४॥
4. teṣu teṣu ca puṇyeṣu tīrtheṣvāyataneṣu ca ,
ekāntaśīlī niyataḥ satataṁ vijitendriyaḥ.
4. teṣu teṣu ca puṇyeṣu tīrtheṣu āyataneṣu ca
ekāntaśīlī niyataḥ satatam vijitendriyaḥ
4. And in various sacred places and pilgrimage sites, and in shrines, he remained constantly solitary, disciplined, and with his senses fully controlled.
तप्यमानं तपो घोरं तं ददर्श पितामहः ।
परिशुष्कमांसत्वक्स्नायुं जटाचीरधरं प्रभुम् ॥५॥
5. tapyamānaṁ tapo ghoraṁ taṁ dadarśa pitāmahaḥ ,
pariśuṣkamāṁsatvaksnāyuṁ jaṭācīradharaṁ prabhum.
5. tapyamānam tapaḥ ghoram tam dadarśa pitāmahaḥ
pariśuṣkamāṃsatvaknsnāyum jaṭācīradharam prabhum
5. The Grandfather (Brahma) saw him, the lord, who was performing severe penance, with his flesh, skin, and sinews completely dried up, and wearing matted locks and bark garments.
तमब्रवीत्सत्यधृतिं तप्यमानं पितामहः ।
किमिदं कुरुषे शेष प्रजानां स्वस्ति वै कुरु ॥६॥
6. tamabravītsatyadhṛtiṁ tapyamānaṁ pitāmahaḥ ,
kimidaṁ kuruṣe śeṣa prajānāṁ svasti vai kuru.
6. tam abravīt satyadhṛtim tapyamānam pitāmahaḥ
kim idam kuruṣe śeṣa prajānām svasti vai kuru
6. The Grandfather (Brahma) spoke to him, Shesha, who was of firm resolve and performing penance: "What is this you are doing, O Shesha? Indeed, ensure the well-being of the beings."
त्वं हि तीव्रेण तपसा प्रजास्तापयसेऽनघ ।
ब्रूहि कामं च मे शेष यत्ते हृदि चिरं स्थितम् ॥७॥
7. tvaṁ hi tīvreṇa tapasā prajāstāpayase'nagha ,
brūhi kāmaṁ ca me śeṣa yatte hṛdi ciraṁ sthitam.
7. tvam hi tīvreṇa tapasā prajāḥ tāpayase anagha
brūhi kāmam ca me śeṣa yat te hṛdi ciram sthitam
7. "Indeed, by your severe penance, you are causing distress to the beings, O sinless one! O Shesha, tell me your desire, whatever has been residing in your heart for a long time."
शेष उवाच ।
सोदर्या मम सर्वे हि भ्रातरो मन्दचेतसः ।
सह तैर्नोत्सहे वस्तुं तद्भवाननुमन्यताम् ॥८॥
8. śeṣa uvāca ,
sodaryā mama sarve hi bhrātaro mandacetasaḥ ,
saha tairnotsahe vastuṁ tadbhavānanumanyatām.
8. śeṣa uvāca sodaryāḥ mama sarve hi bhrātaraḥ mandacetasaḥ
saha taiḥ na utsahe vastum tat bhavān anumanyatām
8. Shesha said: "All my uterine brothers are indeed dull-witted. I cannot bear to live with them. Therefore, may Your Honor approve this."
अभ्यसूयन्ति सततं परस्परममित्रवत् ।
ततोऽहं तप आतिष्ठे नैतान्पश्येयमित्युत ॥९॥
9. abhyasūyanti satataṁ parasparamamitravat ,
tato'haṁ tapa ātiṣṭhe naitānpaśyeyamityuta.
9. abhyasūyanti satatam parasparam amitravat tataḥ
aham tapaḥ ātiṣṭhe na etān paśyeyam iti uta
9. They constantly envy each other like enemies. Therefore, I undertake penance so that I may not see them.
न मर्षयन्ति सततं विनतां ससुतां च ते ।
अस्माकं चापरो भ्राता वैनतेयः पितामह ॥१०॥
10. na marṣayanti satataṁ vinatāṁ sasutāṁ ca te ,
asmākaṁ cāparo bhrātā vainateyaḥ pitāmaha.
10. na marṣayanti satatam vinatām sasutām ca te
asmākam ca aparaḥ bhrātā vainateyaḥ pitāmaha
10. Those (sons of Kadru) constantly do not tolerate Vinatā and her son. And Vainateya (Garuda) is another brother to us, O Grandfather.
तं च द्विषन्ति तेऽत्यर्थं स चापि सुमहाबलः ।
वरप्रदानात्स पितुः कश्यपस्य महात्मनः ॥११॥
11. taṁ ca dviṣanti te'tyarthaṁ sa cāpi sumahābalaḥ ,
varapradānātsa pituḥ kaśyapasya mahātmanaḥ.
11. tam ca dviṣanti te atyartham saḥ ca api sumahābalaḥ
varapradānāt saḥ pituḥ kaśyapasya mahātmanaḥ
11. And they hate him (Garuda) exceedingly. And he (Garuda) is also extremely powerful due to the boon granted by his great-souled father, Kaśyapa.
सोऽहं तपः समास्थाय मोक्ष्यामीदं कलेवरम् ।
कथं मे प्रेत्यभावेऽपि न तैः स्यात्सह संगमः ॥१२॥
12. so'haṁ tapaḥ samāsthāya mokṣyāmīdaṁ kalevaram ,
kathaṁ me pretyabhāve'pi na taiḥ syātsaha saṁgamaḥ.
12. saḥ aham tapaḥ samāsthāya mokṣyāmi idam kalevaram
katham me pretyabhāve api na taiḥ syāt saha saṅgamaḥ
12. Therefore, I, having undertaken severe austerities, shall abandon this body. How can I ensure that I will not have any association with them (my Naga brethren) even in my next life?
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
जानामि शेष सर्वेषां भ्रातॄणां ते विचेष्टितम् ।
मातुश्चाप्यपराधाद्वै भ्रातॄणां ते महद्भयम् ॥१३॥
13. brahmovāca ,
jānāmi śeṣa sarveṣāṁ bhrātṝṇāṁ te viceṣṭitam ,
mātuścāpyaparādhādvai bhrātṝṇāṁ te mahadbhayam.
13. brahmā uvāca jānāmi śeṣa sarveṣām bhrātṝṇām te viceṣṭitam
mātuḥ ca api aparādhāt vai bhrātṝṇām te mahat bhayam
13. Brahmā said: 'O Śeṣa, I know the actions of all your brothers. And indeed, a great danger (has come) upon your brothers due to your mother's fault.'
कृतोऽत्र परिहारश्च पूर्वमेव भुजंगम ।
भ्रातॄणां तव सर्वेषां न शोकं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१४॥
14. kṛto'tra parihāraśca pūrvameva bhujaṁgama ,
bhrātṝṇāṁ tava sarveṣāṁ na śokaṁ kartumarhasi.
14. kṛtaḥ atra parihāraḥ ca pūrvam eva bhujaṅgama
bhrātṝṇām tava sarveṣām na śokam kartum arhasi
14. O Serpent, a remedy has already been made in this matter. You ought not to grieve for all your brothers.
वृणीष्व च वरं मत्तः शेष यत्तेऽभिकाङ्क्षितम् ।
दित्सामि हि वरं तेऽद्य प्रीतिर्मे परमा त्वयि ॥१५॥
15. vṛṇīṣva ca varaṁ mattaḥ śeṣa yatte'bhikāṅkṣitam ,
ditsāmi hi varaṁ te'dya prītirme paramā tvayi.
15. vṛṇīṣva ca varam mattaḥ śeṣa yat te abhīkāṅkṣitam
| ditsāmi hi varam te adya prītiḥ me paramā tvayi
15. O Śeṣa, choose a boon from me, whatever you desire. Indeed, I wish to grant you a boon now, for my affection for you is supreme.
दिष्ट्या च बुद्धिर्धर्मे ते निविष्टा पन्नगोत्तम ।
अतो भूयश्च ते बुद्धिर्धर्मे भवतु सुस्थिरा ॥१६॥
16. diṣṭyā ca buddhirdharme te niviṣṭā pannagottama ,
ato bhūyaśca te buddhirdharme bhavatu susthirā.
16. diṣṭyā ca buddhiḥ dharme te niviṣṭā pannagottama |
ataḥ bhūyaḥ ca te buddhiḥ dharme bhavatu susthirā
16. And fortunately, O best of serpents, your intellect is fixed on righteousness. Therefore, may your intellect be even more steadfast in righteousness.
शेष उवाच ।
एष एव वरो मेऽद्य काङ्क्षितः प्रपितामह ।
धर्मे मे रमतां बुद्धिः शमे तपसि चेश्वर ॥१७॥
17. śeṣa uvāca ,
eṣa eva varo me'dya kāṅkṣitaḥ prapitāmaha ,
dharme me ramatāṁ buddhiḥ śame tapasi ceśvara.
17. śeṣa uvāca | eṣa eva varaḥ me adya kāṅkṣitaḥ prapitāmaha
| dharme me ramatām buddhiḥ śame tapasi ca īśvara
17. Śeṣa said: "O Great-Grandfather, this is indeed the boon desired by me today: O Lord, may my intellect delight in righteousness, in tranquility, and in penance."
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
प्रीतोऽस्म्यनेन ते शेष दमेन प्रशमेन च ।
त्वया त्विदं वचः कार्यं मन्नियोगात्प्रजाहितम् ॥१८॥
18. brahmovāca ,
prīto'smyanena te śeṣa damena praśamena ca ,
tvayā tvidaṁ vacaḥ kāryaṁ manniyogātprajāhitam.
18. brahmā uvāca | prītaḥ asmi anena te śeṣa damena praśamena
ca | tvayā tu idam vacaḥ kāryam mat niyogāt prajāhitam
18. Brahma said: "O Śeṣa, I am pleased by your self-control and tranquility. But this command, which is beneficial for all creatures, must be carried out by you at my behest."
इमां महीं शैलवनोपपन्नां ससागरां साकरपत्तनां च ।
त्वं शेष सम्यक्चलितां यथावत्संगृह्य तिष्ठस्व यथाचला स्यात् ॥१९॥
19. imāṁ mahīṁ śailavanopapannāṁ; sasāgarāṁ sākarapattanāṁ ca ,
tvaṁ śeṣa samyakcalitāṁ yathāva;tsaṁgṛhya tiṣṭhasva yathācalā syāt.
19. imām mahīm śailavanopapannām
sasāgarām sākarapattanām ca | tvam
śeṣa samyak calitām yathāvat
saṃgṛhya tiṣṭhasva yathā acalā syāt
19. O Śeṣa, you must properly sustain this Earth, which is furnished with mountains and forests, with its oceans and cities, and which has become thoroughly agitated, so that it may remain steady.
शेष उवाच ।
यथाह देवो वरदः प्रजापतिर्महीपतिर्भूतपतिर्जगत्पतिः ।
तथा महीं धारयितास्मि निश्चलां प्रयच्छ तां मे शिरसि प्रजापते ॥२०॥
20. śeṣa uvāca ,
yathāha devo varadaḥ prajāpati;rmahīpatirbhūtapatirjagatpatiḥ ,
tathā mahīṁ dhārayitāsmi niścalāṁ; prayaccha tāṁ me śirasi prajāpate.
20. śeṣaḥ uvāca | yathā āha devaḥ varadaḥ
prajāpatiḥ mahīpatiḥ bhūtapatiḥ jagatpatiḥ
| tathā mahīm dhārayitā asmi niścalām
prayaccha tām me śirasi prajāpate
20. Shesha said: 'As the god, the bestower of boons, the Lord of creation, the Lord of the earth, the Lord of beings, the Lord of the universe, has commanded, so I shall hold the earth firmly. Therefore, O Lord of creation, entrust it to me upon my head.'
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
अधो महीं गच्छ भुजंगमोत्तम स्वयं तवैषा विवरं प्रदास्यति ।
इमां धरां धारयता त्वया हि मे महत्प्रियं शेष कृतं भविष्यति ॥२१॥
21. brahmovāca ,
adho mahīṁ gaccha bhujaṁgamottama; svayaṁ tavaiṣā vivaraṁ pradāsyati ,
imāṁ dharāṁ dhārayatā tvayā hi me; mahatpriyaṁ śeṣa kṛtaṁ bhaviṣyati.
21. brahmā uvāca | adhaḥ mahīm gaccha
bhujaṅgamottama svayam tava eṣā vivaram
pradāsyati | imām dharām dhārayatā tvayā
hi me mahat priyam śeṣa kṛtam bhaviṣyati
21. Brahma said: 'Descend to the earth, O best of serpents. This very earth will create a cavity for you. Indeed, O Shesha, by your holding this earth, a great favor will be accomplished for me.'
सूत उवाच ।
तथेति कृत्वा विवरं प्रविश्य स प्रभुर्भुवो भुजगवराग्रजः स्थितः ।
बिभर्ति देवीं शिरसा महीमिमां समुद्रनेमिं परिगृह्य सर्वतः ॥२२॥
22. sūta uvāca ,
tatheti kṛtvā vivaraṁ praviśya sa; prabhurbhuvo bhujagavarāgrajaḥ sthitaḥ ,
bibharti devīṁ śirasā mahīmimāṁ; samudranemiṁ parigṛhya sarvataḥ.
22. sūtaḥ uvāca | tathā iti kṛtvā vivaram
praviśya saḥ prabhuḥ bhuvaḥ bhujaṅgavara-agrajaḥ
sthitaḥ | bibharti devīm śirasā
mahīm imām samudra-nemim parigṛhya sarvataḥ
22. Suta said: 'Saying 'So be it,' and having entered the cavity, that lord of the earth, the foremost of the best serpents, remained there. He supports this divine earth, which is bordered by the ocean, on his head, grasping it from all sides.'
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
शेषोऽसि नागोत्तम धर्मदेवो महीमिमां धारयसे यदेकः ।
अनन्तभोगः परिगृह्य सर्वां यथाहमेवं बलभिद्यथा वा ॥२३॥
23. brahmovāca ,
śeṣo'si nāgottama dharmadevo; mahīmimāṁ dhārayase yadekaḥ ,
anantabhogaḥ parigṛhya sarvāṁ; yathāhamevaṁ balabhidyathā vā.
23. brahmā uvāca | śeṣaḥ asi nāgottama
dharmadevaḥ mahīm imām dhārayase yat
ekaḥ | ananta-bhogaḥ parigṛhya
sarvām yathā aham evam balabhit yathā vā
23. Brahma said: 'O Shesha, you are the best of serpents, a god of Dharma, because you alone support this earth. You, with your infinite coils, uphold it completely, just as I do, or as Balabhit (Indra) does.'
सूत उवाच ।
अधो भूमेर्वसत्येवं नागोऽनन्तः प्रतापवान् ।
धारयन्वसुधामेकः शासनाद्ब्रह्मणो विभुः ॥२४॥
24. sūta uvāca ,
adho bhūmervasatyevaṁ nāgo'nantaḥ pratāpavān ,
dhārayanvasudhāmekaḥ śāsanādbrahmaṇo vibhuḥ.
24. sūtaḥ uvāca | adhaḥ bhūmeḥ vasati evam nāgaḥ anantaḥ
pratāpavān | dhārayan vasudhām ekaḥ śāsanāt brahmaṇaḥ vibhuḥ
24. Suta said: 'Thus, the powerful Ananta Nāga dwells beneath the earth, supporting the earth alone, by the command of Brahma, for he is mighty.'
सुपर्णं च सखायं वै भगवानमरोत्तमः ।
प्रादादनन्ताय तदा वैनतेयं पितामहः ॥२५॥
25. suparṇaṁ ca sakhāyaṁ vai bhagavānamarottamaḥ ,
prādādanantāya tadā vainateyaṁ pitāmahaḥ.
25. suparṇam ca sakhāyam vai bhagavān amarottamaḥ
prādāt anantāya tadā vainateyam pitāmahaḥ
25. And then, Lord Brahmā, the revered grandfather and best among immortals, indeed gave Vainateya (Garuda) as a friend to Ananta.
