Bṛhadaśva said: Then, in the evening, the people informed King Bhīma of the arrival of Ṛtuparṇa, who was of true valor, in Vidarbha.

2.
By King Bhīma's command, that king (Ṛtuparṇa) entered the city of Kuṇḍina, making all ten directions, including the intermediate ones, reverberate with the roar of his chariot.

3.
Then, Nala's horses heard that chariot's roar. And having heard it, they rejoiced greatly, just as they had done previously in Nala's presence.

4.
And Damayantī heard that deep sound of Nala's chariot, just like the deep roar of a thundering cloud at the arrival of the rainy season.

5.
Damayantī (Bhaimī) and the horses perceived a chariot sound similar to when Nala used to drive his horses before.

6.
And there, the peacocks on the palace, the elephants in the stables, and the horses all heard the chariot's sound belonging to the king.

7.
O King, having heard the chariot's sound, those elephants and peacocks, with uplifted faces, roared out as if they had seen the rising of rain clouds.

Damayanti said, "This roar of the chariot, as if filling the earth, delights my heart; it must be King Nala."

My Naiṣadha (Nala) is mighty, forgiving, and brave; gentle, self-controlled, and a conqueror of his senses. And in private, he never pursued low inclinations, yet now he is like one who is impotent.

My heart, separated from my beloved, is being torn asunder by sorrow, as I remember his virtues day and night, being utterly devoted to him.

Then, in the middle chamber, she saw King Ṛtuparṇa, the protector of the earth, seated in a chariot, along with Vārṣṇeya and Bāhuka.

Then, having dismounted from the excellent chariot, Vārṣṇeya and Bāhuka subsequently unyoked those horses and placed the chariot (aside).

O great king, King Ṛtuparṇa, having dismounted from the chariot's platform, then approached Bhīma, who possessed terrible prowess.

Then Bhīma received him with great honor. However, he (Bhīma) did not understand the secret counsel (mantra) concerning the woman (Damayantī), which had arrived suddenly and unexpectedly.

'What is your purpose? Welcome to you!' — being thus questioned by King Bhīma, O Bhārata, that king (Bhīma) did not recognize that he (Ṛtuparṇa) had arrived for the sake of his daughter (Damayantī).

22.
And that King Ṛtuparṇa, who was intelligent and possessed true valor, did not see any king or prince, nor indeed any mention of a svayaṃvara, nor an assembly of Brahmins.

Then the King of Kosala (Ṛtuparṇa), pondering in his mind, said to him (Bhīma), 'I have arrived as one who salutes you (bhavantam).'

Even after considering the crossing of many villages, he (Bhima) did not fully grasp the true reason for the other's coming, which had been declared as a trivial matter.

But it was not so simple; the king, having honored him, dismissed him, repeatedly saying, 'Please rest, for you are weary.'

sūtaputraṃ ca vārṣṇeyam bāhukaṃ ca tathāvidham
sūtaputraṃ ca vārṣṇeyam bāhukaṃ ca tathāvidham
30.
But Damayantī, afflicted by grief, saw King Bhāṅgasvari (Ṛtuparna), Vārṣṇeya the charioteer's son, and Bāhuka who was in that (disguised) state.
31. cintayāmāsa vaidarbhī kasyaiṣa rathanisvanaḥ ,
nalasyeva mahānāsīnna ca paśyāmi naiṣadham.
nalasyeva mahānāsīnna ca paśyāmi naiṣadham.
31.
cintayāmāsa vaidarbhī kasya eṣaḥ rathanisvanaḥ
nalasya iva mahān āsīt na ca paśyāmi naiṣadham
nalasya iva mahān āsīt na ca paśyāmi naiṣadham
31.
The princess of Vidarbha (Damayantī) pondered, 'Whose chariot-sound is this? It was mighty, just like Nala's, yet I do not see the king of Niṣadha (Nala).'
32. vārṣṇeyena bhavennūnaṁ vidyā saivopaśikṣitā ,
tenāsya rathanirghoṣo nalasyeva mahānabhūt.
tenāsya rathanirghoṣo nalasyeva mahānabhūt.
32.
vārṣṇeyena bhavet nūnam vidyā sā eva upaśikṣitā
tena asya rathanirghoṣaḥ nalasya iva mahān abhūt
tena asya rathanirghoṣaḥ nalasya iva mahān abhūt
32.
Surely, that very skill must have been imparted by Vārṣṇeya (Bāhuka). That is why the roar of this chariot was mighty, just like Nala's.
33. āhosvidṛtuparṇo'pi yathā rājā nalastathā ,
tato'yaṁ rathanirghoṣo naiṣadhasyeva lakṣyate.
tato'yaṁ rathanirghoṣo naiṣadhasyeva lakṣyate.
33.
āhosvid ṛtuparṇaḥ api yathā rājā nalaḥ tathā
tataḥ ayam rathanirghoṣaḥ naiṣadhasya iva lakṣyate
tataḥ ayam rathanirghoṣaḥ naiṣadhasya iva lakṣyate
33.
Or perhaps Ṛtuparṇa is indeed like King Nala? Consequently, this chariot's roar seems like that of the King of Niṣadha (Nala).
34. evaṁ vitarkayitvā tu damayantī viśāṁ pate ,
dūtīṁ prasthāpayāmāsa naiṣadhānveṣaṇe nṛpa.
dūtīṁ prasthāpayāmāsa naiṣadhānveṣaṇe nṛpa.
34.
evam vitarkayitvā tu damayantī viśām pate
dūtīm prasthāpayāmāsa naiṣadhānveṣaṇe nṛpa
dūtīm prasthāpayāmāsa naiṣadhānveṣaṇe nṛpa
34.
Having pondered in this manner, O King, Damayantī dispatched a female messenger (dūtī) to search for the King of Niṣadha (Nala).
