वासुदेव उवाच ।
नेदं कृच्छ्रमनुप्राप्तो भवान्स्याद्वसुधाधिप ।
यद्यहं द्वारकायां स्यां राजन्संनिहितः पुरा ॥१॥
1. vāsudeva uvāca ,
nedaṁ kṛcchramanuprāpto bhavānsyādvasudhādhipa ,
yadyahaṁ dvārakāyāṁ syāṁ rājansaṁnihitaḥ purā.
1. vāsudevaḥ uvāca | na idam kṛcchram anuprāptaḥ bhavān syāt
vasudhādhipa | yadi aham dvārakāyām syām rājan sannihitaḥ purā
1. Vāsudeva said, "O King, lord of the earth (vasudhādhipa), you would not have encountered this difficulty if I had been present in Dvārakā earlier."
आगच्छेयमहं द्यूतमनाहूतोऽपि कौरवैः ।
आम्बिकेयेन दुर्धर्ष राज्ञा दुर्योधनेन च ॥२॥
2. āgaccheyamahaṁ dyūtamanāhūto'pi kauravaiḥ ,
āmbikeyena durdharṣa rājñā duryodhanena ca.
2. āgaccheyam aham dyūtam anāhūtaḥ api kauravaiḥ
āmbikeyena durdharṣa rājñā duryodhanena ca
2. O unconquerable son of Ambikā (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), I would attend the dice game even if uninvited by the Kauravas and by King Duryodhana.
वारयेयमहं द्यूतं बहून्दोषान्प्रदर्शयन् ।
भीष्मद्रोणौ समानाय्य कृपं बाह्लीकमेव च ॥३॥
3. vārayeyamahaṁ dyūtaṁ bahūndoṣānpradarśayan ,
bhīṣmadroṇau samānāyya kṛpaṁ bāhlīkameva ca.
3. vārayeyam aham dyūtam bahūn doṣān pradarśayan
bhīṣmadroṇau samānāyya kṛpam bāhlīkam eva ca
3. I would prevent the dice game by pointing out its many flaws, having brought Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and Bahlika together.
वैचित्रवीर्यं राजानमलं द्यूतेन कौरव ।
पुत्राणां तव राजेन्द्र त्वन्निमित्तमिति प्रभो ॥४॥
4. vaicitravīryaṁ rājānamalaṁ dyūtena kaurava ,
putrāṇāṁ tava rājendra tvannimittamiti prabho.
4. vaicitravīryam rājānam alam dyūtena kaurava
putrāṇām tava rājendra tvannimittam iti prabho
4. O Kaurava, O King Dhritarashtra, son of Vichitravirya, O lord, enough of this dice game! I say this for the sake of your sons and because of you.
तत्र वक्ष्याम्यहं दोषान्यैर्भवानवरोपितः ।
वीरसेनसुतो यैश्च राज्यात्प्रभ्रंशितः पुरा ॥५॥
5. tatra vakṣyāmyahaṁ doṣānyairbhavānavaropitaḥ ,
vīrasenasuto yaiśca rājyātprabhraṁśitaḥ purā.
5. tatra vakṣyāmi aham doṣān yaiḥ bhavān avaropitaḥ
vīrasenasutaḥ yaiḥ ca rājyāt prabhraṃśitaḥ purā
5. Then, I will explain the flaws by which one is deposed, such as how the son of Virasena (Nala) was previously dethroned from his kingdom.
अभक्षितविनाशं च देवनेन विशां पते ।
सातत्यं च प्रसङ्गस्य वर्णयेयं यथातथम् ॥६॥
6. abhakṣitavināśaṁ ca devanena viśāṁ pate ,
sātatyaṁ ca prasaṅgasya varṇayeyaṁ yathātatham.
6. abhakṣitavināśam ca devanena viśām pate
sātatyam ca prasaṅgasya varṇayeyam yathātatham
6. O lord of the people, I shall truthfully describe the ruin of wealth not yet consumed or enjoyed, and the persistent attachment (prasaṅga) that arises from gambling.
स्त्रियोऽक्षा मृगया पानमेतत्कामसमुत्थितम् ।
व्यसनं चतुष्टयं प्रोक्तं यै राजन्भ्रश्यते श्रियः ॥७॥
7. striyo'kṣā mṛgayā pānametatkāmasamutthitam ,
vyasanaṁ catuṣṭayaṁ proktaṁ yai rājanbhraśyate śriyaḥ.
7. striyaḥ akṣāḥ mṛgayā pānam etat kāmasamutthitam
vyasanam catuṣṭayam proktam yaiḥ rājan bhraśyate śriyaḥ
7. Women, gambling (akṣa), hunting, and drinking – this group of four vices, born from desire (kāma), is declared to be that by which, O King, one's prosperity (śrī) is lost.
तत्र सर्वत्र वक्तव्यं मन्यन्ते शास्त्रकोविदाः ।
विशेषतश्च वक्तव्यं द्यूते पश्यन्ति तद्विदः ॥८॥
8. tatra sarvatra vaktavyaṁ manyante śāstrakovidāḥ ,
viśeṣataśca vaktavyaṁ dyūte paśyanti tadvidaḥ.
8. tatra sarvatra vaktavyam manyante śāstrakovidāḥ
viśeṣataḥ ca vaktavyam dyūte paśyanti tadvidaḥ
8. Experts in the scriptures (śāstra) consider that this topic should be discussed in all contexts; however, those who truly understand the matter see that it requires particular emphasis when it comes to gambling.
एकाह्ना द्रव्यनाशोऽत्र ध्रुवं व्यसनमेव च ।
अभुक्तनाशश्चार्थानां वाक्पारुष्यं च केवलम् ॥९॥
9. ekāhnā dravyanāśo'tra dhruvaṁ vyasanameva ca ,
abhuktanāśaścārthānāṁ vākpāruṣyaṁ ca kevalam.
9. ekāhnā dravyanāśaḥ atra dhruvam vyasanam eva ca
abhuktanāśaḥ ca arthānām vākpāruṣyam ca kevalam
9. Here, in a single day, there is certainly a loss of wealth and a vice (vyasana). There is also the ruin of possessions not yet enjoyed, and merely harsh speech.
एतच्चान्यच्च कौरव्य प्रसङ्गि कटुकोदयम् ।
द्यूते ब्रूयां महाबाहो समासाद्याम्बिकासुतम् ॥१०॥
10. etaccānyacca kauravya prasaṅgi kaṭukodayam ,
dyūte brūyāṁ mahābāho samāsādyāmbikāsutam.
10. etat ca anyat ca kauravya prasaṅgi kaṭukodayam
dyūte brūyām mahābāho samāsādya ambikāsutam
10. O descendant of Kuru, O mighty-armed one, having approached Ambika's son (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), I would speak to him about this and other related matters concerning gambling, which has a bitter outcome.
एवमुक्तो यदि मया गृह्णीयाद्वचनं मम ।
अनामयं स्याद्धर्मस्य कुरूणां कुरुनन्दन ॥११॥
11. evamukto yadi mayā gṛhṇīyādvacanaṁ mama ,
anāmayaṁ syāddharmasya kurūṇāṁ kurunandana.
11. evam uktaḥ yadi mayā gṛhṇīyāt vacanam mama
anāmayam syāt dharmasya kurūṇām kurunandana
11. If he, spoken to in this way by me, were to accept my advice, then there would be well-being for the constitution (dharma) of the Kurus, O delight of the Kurus.
न चेत्स मम राजेन्द्र गृह्णीयान्मधुरं वचः ।
पथ्यं च भरतश्रेष्ठ निगृह्णीयां बलेन तम् ॥१२॥
12. na cetsa mama rājendra gṛhṇīyānmadhuraṁ vacaḥ ,
pathyaṁ ca bharataśreṣṭha nigṛhṇīyāṁ balena tam.
12. na cet saḥ mama rājendra gṛhṇīyāt madhuram vacaḥ
pathyam ca bharataśreṣṭha nigṛhṇīyām balena tam
12. But if he, O king of kings, O best of Bharatas, were not to accept my sweet and beneficial advice, then I would restrain him by force.
अथैनानभिनीयैवं सुहृदो नाम दुर्हृदः ।
सभासदश्च तान्सर्वान्भेदयेयं दुरोदरान् ॥१३॥
13. athainānabhinīyaivaṁ suhṛdo nāma durhṛdaḥ ,
sabhāsadaśca tānsarvānbhedayeyaṁ durodarān.
13. atha enān abhinīyya evam suhṛdaḥ nāma durhṛdaḥ
sabhāsadaḥ ca tān sarvān bhedayeyam durodarān
13. Then, having brought forth (and exposed) those who are merely called friends but are truly ill-wishers, and all those assembly members, I would cause division among those gamblers.
असांनिध्यं तु कौरव्य ममानर्तेष्वभूत्तदा ।
येनेदं व्यसनं प्राप्ता भवन्तो द्यूतकारितम् ॥१४॥
14. asāṁnidhyaṁ tu kauravya mamānarteṣvabhūttadā ,
yenedaṁ vyasanaṁ prāptā bhavanto dyūtakāritam.
14. asāṃnidhyam tu kauravya mama ānarteṣu abhūt tadā
yena idam vyasanam prāptāḥ bhavantaḥ dyūtakāritam
14. But, O Kaurava, at that time I was absent in the Ānarta country, and because of this, you all have incurred this calamity (vyasana) brought about by gambling.
सोऽहमेत्य कुरुश्रेष्ठ द्वारकां पाण्डुनन्दन ।
अश्रौषं त्वां व्यसनिनं युयुधानाद्यथातथम् ॥१५॥
15. so'hametya kuruśreṣṭha dvārakāṁ pāṇḍunandana ,
aśrauṣaṁ tvāṁ vyasaninaṁ yuyudhānādyathātatham.
15. saḥ aham etya kuruśreṣṭha dvārakām pāṇḍunandana
aśrauṣam tvām vyasaninam yuyudhānāt yathātatham
15. O best of Kurus (kuruśreṣṭha), O son of Pāṇḍu (pāṇḍunandana), having arrived in Dvārakā, I then heard from Yuyudhāna a true account of your great misfortune (vyasana).
श्रुत्वैव चाहं राजेन्द्र परमोद्विग्नमानसः ।
तूर्णमभ्यागतोऽस्मि त्वां द्रष्टुकामो विशां पते ॥१६॥
16. śrutvaiva cāhaṁ rājendra paramodvignamānasaḥ ,
tūrṇamabhyāgato'smi tvāṁ draṣṭukāmo viśāṁ pate.
16. śrutvā eva ca aham rājendra paramodvignamānasaḥ
tūrṇam abhyāgataḥ asmi tvām draṣṭukāmaḥ viśām pate
16. And, O king of kings (rājendra), O ruler of men (viśāṃ pate), as soon as I heard this, my mind became greatly agitated, and I quickly arrived here, desiring to see you.
अहो कृच्छ्रमनुप्राप्ताः सर्वे स्म भरतर्षभ ।
ये वयं त्वां व्यसनिनं पश्यामः सह सोदरैः ॥१७॥
17. aho kṛcchramanuprāptāḥ sarve sma bharatarṣabha ,
ye vayaṁ tvāṁ vyasaninaṁ paśyāmaḥ saha sodaraiḥ.
17. aho kṛcchram anuprāptāḥ sarve sma bharatarṣabha
ye vayam tvām vyasaninam paśyāmaḥ saha sodaraiḥ
17. Alas, O best of Bhāratas (bharatarṣabha), all of us have fallen into a terrible predicament, we who see you, along with your brothers, in such a state of great misfortune (vyasana).
