एषा प्रथमतो वृत्तिर्द्वितीयां शृणु भारत ।
यः कश्चिज्जनयेदर्थं राज्ञा रक्ष्यः स मानवः ॥१॥

1. Bhishma said: 'This is the first rule of conduct; now, O Bharata, listen to the second. Whosoever creates prosperity, that person must be protected by the king.'
ह्रियमाणममात्येन भृतो वा यदि वाभृतः ।
यो राजकोशं नश्यन्तमाचक्षीत युधिष्ठिर ॥२॥
2. hriyamāṇamamātyena bhṛto vā yadi vābhṛtaḥ ,
yo rājakośaṁ naśyantamācakṣīta yudhiṣṭhira.
श्रोतव्यं तस्य च रहो रक्ष्यश्चामात्यतो भवेत् ।
अमात्या ह्युपहन्तारं भूयिष्ठं घ्नन्ति भारत ॥३॥
3. śrotavyaṁ tasya ca raho rakṣyaścāmātyato bhavet ,
amātyā hyupahantāraṁ bhūyiṣṭhaṁ ghnanti bhārata.
राजकोशस्य गोप्तारं राजकोशविलोपकाः ।
समेत्य सर्वे बाधन्ते स विनश्यत्यरक्षितः ॥४॥
4. rājakośasya goptāraṁ rājakośavilopakāḥ ,
sametya sarve bādhante sa vinaśyatyarakṣitaḥ.
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
मुनिः कालकवृक्षीयः कौसल्यं यदुवाच ह ॥५॥
5. atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīyaḥ kausalyaṁ yaduvāca ha.
कोसलानामाधिपत्यं संप्राप्ते क्षेमदर्शिनि ।
मुनिः कालकवृक्षीय आजगामेति नः श्रुतम् ॥६॥
6. kosalānāmādhipatyaṁ saṁprāpte kṣemadarśini ,
muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīya ājagāmeti naḥ śrutam.
स काकं पञ्जरे बद्ध्वा विषयं क्षेमदर्शिनः ।
पूर्वं पर्यचरद्युक्तः प्रवृत्त्यर्थी पुनः पुनः ॥७॥
7. sa kākaṁ pañjare baddhvā viṣayaṁ kṣemadarśinaḥ ,
pūrvaṁ paryacaradyuktaḥ pravṛttyarthī punaḥ punaḥ.
अधीये वायसीं विद्यां शंसन्ति मम वायसाः ।
अनागतमतीतं च यच्च संप्रति वर्तते ॥८॥
8. adhīye vāyasīṁ vidyāṁ śaṁsanti mama vāyasāḥ ,
anāgatamatītaṁ ca yacca saṁprati vartate.
इति राष्ट्रे परिपतन्बहुशः पुरुषैः सह ।
सर्वेषां राजयुक्तानां दुष्कृतं परिपृष्टवान् ॥९॥
9. iti rāṣṭre paripatanbahuśaḥ puruṣaiḥ saha ,
sarveṣāṁ rājayuktānāṁ duṣkṛtaṁ paripṛṣṭavān.
स बुद्ध्वा तस्य राष्ट्रस्य व्यवसायं हि सर्वशः ।
राजयुक्तापचारांश्च सर्वान्बुद्ध्वा ततस्ततः ॥१०॥
10. sa buddhvā tasya rāṣṭrasya vyavasāyaṁ hi sarvaśaḥ ,
rājayuktāpacārāṁśca sarvānbuddhvā tatastataḥ.
तमेव काकमादाय राजानं द्रष्टुमागमत् ।
सर्वज्ञोऽस्मीति वचनं ब्रुवाणः संशितव्रतः ॥११॥
11. tameva kākamādāya rājānaṁ draṣṭumāgamat ,
sarvajño'smīti vacanaṁ bruvāṇaḥ saṁśitavrataḥ.
स स्म कौसल्यमागम्य राजामात्यमलंकृतम् ।
प्राह काकस्य वचनादमुत्रेदं त्वया कृतम् ॥१२॥
12. sa sma kausalyamāgamya rājāmātyamalaṁkṛtam ,
prāha kākasya vacanādamutredaṁ tvayā kṛtam.
असौ चासौ च जानीते राजकोशस्त्वया हृतः ।
एवमाख्याति काकोऽयं तच्छीघ्रमनुगम्यताम् ॥१३॥
13. asau cāsau ca jānīte rājakośastvayā hṛtaḥ ,
evamākhyāti kāko'yaṁ tacchīghramanugamyatām.
तथान्यानपि स प्राह राजकोशहरान्सदा ।
न चास्य वचनं किंचिदकृतं श्रूयते क्वचित् ॥१४॥
14. tathānyānapi sa prāha rājakośaharānsadā ,
na cāsya vacanaṁ kiṁcidakṛtaṁ śrūyate kvacit.
तेन विप्रकृताः सर्वे राजयुक्ताः कुरूद्वह ।
तमतिक्रम्य सुप्तस्य निशि काकमपोथयन् ॥१५॥
15. tena viprakṛtāḥ sarve rājayuktāḥ kurūdvaha ,
tamatikramya suptasya niśi kākamapothayan.
वायसं तु विनिर्भिन्नं दृष्ट्वा बाणेन पञ्जरे ।
पूर्वाह्णे ब्राह्मणो वाक्यं क्षेमदर्शिनमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. vāyasaṁ tu vinirbhinnaṁ dṛṣṭvā bāṇena pañjare ,
pūrvāhṇe brāhmaṇo vākyaṁ kṣemadarśinamabravīt.
राजंस्त्वामभयं याचे प्रभुं प्राणधनेश्वरम् ।
अनुज्ञातस्त्वया ब्रूयां वचनं त्वत्पुरो हितम् ॥१७॥
17. rājaṁstvāmabhayaṁ yāce prabhuṁ prāṇadhaneśvaram ,
anujñātastvayā brūyāṁ vacanaṁ tvatpuro hitam.
मित्रार्थमभिसंतप्तो भक्त्या सर्वात्मना गतः ।
अयं तवार्थं हरते यो ब्रूयादक्षमान्वितः ॥१८॥
18. mitrārthamabhisaṁtapto bhaktyā sarvātmanā gataḥ ,
ayaṁ tavārthaṁ harate yo brūyādakṣamānvitaḥ.
संबुबोधयिषुर्मित्रं सदश्वमिव सारथिः ।
अतिमन्युप्रसक्तो हि प्रसज्य हितकारणम् ॥१९॥
19. saṁbubodhayiṣurmitraṁ sadaśvamiva sārathiḥ ,
atimanyuprasakto hi prasajya hitakāraṇam.
तथाविधस्य सुहृदः क्षन्तव्यं संविजानता ।
ऐश्वर्यमिच्छता नित्यं पुरुषेण बुभूषता ॥२०॥
20. tathāvidhasya suhṛdaḥ kṣantavyaṁ saṁvijānatā ,
aiśvaryamicchatā nityaṁ puruṣeṇa bubhūṣatā.
तं राजा प्रत्युवाचेदं यन्मा किंचिद्भवान्वदेत् ।
कस्मादहं न क्षमेयमाकाङ्क्षन्नात्मनो हितम् ॥२१॥
21. taṁ rājā pratyuvācedaṁ yanmā kiṁcidbhavānvadet ,
kasmādahaṁ na kṣameyamākāṅkṣannātmano hitam.
ब्राह्मण प्रतिजानीहि प्रब्रूहि यदि चेच्छसि ।
करिष्यामि हि ते वाक्यं यद्यन्मां विप्र वक्ष्यसि ॥२२॥
22. brāhmaṇa pratijānīhi prabrūhi yadi cecchasi ,
kariṣyāmi hi te vākyaṁ yadyanmāṁ vipra vakṣyasi.
मुनिरुवाच ।
ज्ञात्वा नयानपायांश्च भृत्यतस्ते भयानि च ।
भक्त्या वृत्तिं समाख्यातुं भवतोऽन्तिकमागमम् ॥२३॥
23. muniruvāca ,
jñātvā nayānapāyāṁśca bhṛtyataste bhayāni ca ,
bhaktyā vṛttiṁ samākhyātuṁ bhavato'ntikamāgamam.
प्रागेवोक्तश्च दोषोऽयमाचार्यैर्नृपसेविनाम् ।
अगतीकगतिर्ह्येषा या राज्ञा सह जीविका ॥२४॥
24. prāgevoktaśca doṣo'yamācāryairnṛpasevinām ,
agatīkagatirhyeṣā yā rājñā saha jīvikā.
आशीविषैश्च तस्याहुः संगतं यस्य राजभिः ।
बहुमित्राश्च राजानो बह्वमित्रास्तथैव च ॥२५॥
25. āśīviṣaiśca tasyāhuḥ saṁgataṁ yasya rājabhiḥ ,
bahumitrāśca rājāno bahvamitrāstathaiva ca.
तेभ्यः सर्वेभ्य एवाहुर्भयं राजोपसेविनाम् ।
अथैषामेकतो राजन्मुहूर्तादेव भीर्भवेत् ॥२६॥
26. tebhyaḥ sarvebhya evāhurbhayaṁ rājopasevinām ,
athaiṣāmekato rājanmuhūrtādeva bhīrbhavet.
नैकान्तेनाप्रमादो हि कर्तुं शक्यो महीपतौ ।
न तु प्रमादः कर्तव्यः कथंचिद्भूतिमिच्छता ॥२७॥
27. naikāntenāpramādo hi kartuṁ śakyo mahīpatau ,
na tu pramādaḥ kartavyaḥ kathaṁcidbhūtimicchatā.
प्रमादाद्धि स्खलेद्राजा स्खलिते नास्ति जीवितम् ।
अग्निं दीप्तमिवासीदेद्राजानमुपशिक्षितः ॥२८॥
28. pramādāddhi skhaledrājā skhalite nāsti jīvitam ,
agniṁ dīptamivāsīdedrājānamupaśikṣitaḥ.
आशीविषमिव क्रुद्धं प्रभुं प्राणधनेश्वरम् ।
यत्नेनोपचरेन्नित्यं नाहमस्मीति मानवः ॥२९॥
29. āśīviṣamiva kruddhaṁ prabhuṁ prāṇadhaneśvaram ,
yatnenopacarennityaṁ nāhamasmīti mānavaḥ.
दुर्व्याहृताच्छङ्कमानो दुष्कृताद्दुरधिष्ठितात् ।
दुरासिताद्दुर्व्रजितादिङ्गितादङ्गचेष्टितात् ॥३०॥
30. durvyāhṛtācchaṅkamāno duṣkṛtādduradhiṣṭhitāt ,
durāsitāddurvrajitādiṅgitādaṅgaceṣṭitāt.
देवतेव हि सर्वार्थान्कुर्याद्राजा प्रसादितः ।
वैश्वानर इव क्रुद्धः समूलमपि निर्दहेत् ।
इति राजन्मयः प्राह वर्तते च तथैव तत् ॥३१॥
31. devateva hi sarvārthānkuryādrājā prasāditaḥ ,
vaiśvānara iva kruddhaḥ samūlamapi nirdahet ,
iti rājanmayaḥ prāha vartate ca tathaiva tat.
अथ भूयांसमेवार्थं करिष्यामि पुनः पुनः ।
ददात्यस्मद्विधोऽमात्यो बुद्धिसाहाय्यमापदि ॥३२॥
32. atha bhūyāṁsamevārthaṁ kariṣyāmi punaḥ punaḥ ,
dadātyasmadvidho'mātyo buddhisāhāyyamāpadi.
वायसश्चैव मे राजन्नन्तकायाभिसंहितः ।
न च मेऽत्र भवान्गर्ह्यो न च येषां भवान्प्रियः ।
हिताहितांस्तु बुध्येथा मा परोक्षमतिर्भव ॥३३॥
33. vāyasaścaiva me rājannantakāyābhisaṁhitaḥ ,
na ca me'tra bhavāngarhyo na ca yeṣāṁ bhavānpriyaḥ ,
hitāhitāṁstu budhyethā mā parokṣamatirbhava.
ये त्वादानपरा एव वसन्ति भवतो गृहे ।
अभूतिकामा भूतानां तादृशैर्मेऽभिसंहितम् ॥३४॥
34. ye tvādānaparā eva vasanti bhavato gṛhe ,
abhūtikāmā bhūtānāṁ tādṛśairme'bhisaṁhitam.
ये वा भवद्विनाशेन राज्यमिच्छन्त्यनन्तरम् ।
अन्तरैरभिसंधाय राजन्सिध्यन्ति नान्यथा ॥३५॥
35. ye vā bhavadvināśena rājyamicchantyanantaram ,
antarairabhisaṁdhāya rājansidhyanti nānyathā.
तेषामहं भयाद्राजन्गमिष्याम्यन्यमाश्रमम् ।
तैर्हि मे संधितो बाणः काके निपतितः प्रभो ॥३६॥
36. teṣāmahaṁ bhayādrājangamiṣyāmyanyamāśramam ,
tairhi me saṁdhito bāṇaḥ kāke nipatitaḥ prabho.
छद्मना मम काकश्च गमितो यमसादनम् ।
दृष्टं ह्येतन्मया राजंस्तपोदीर्घेण चक्षुषा ॥३७॥
37. chadmanā mama kākaśca gamito yamasādanam ,
dṛṣṭaṁ hyetanmayā rājaṁstapodīrgheṇa cakṣuṣā.
बहुनक्रझषग्राहां तिमिंगिलगणायुताम् ।
काकेन बडिशेनेमामतार्षं त्वामहं नदीम् ॥३८॥
38. bahunakrajhaṣagrāhāṁ timiṁgilagaṇāyutām ,
kākena baḍiśenemāmatārṣaṁ tvāmahaṁ nadīm.
स्थाण्वश्मकण्टकवतीं व्याघ्रसिंहगजाकुलाम् ।
दुरासदां दुष्प्रवेशां गुहां हैमवतीमिव ॥३९॥
39. sthāṇvaśmakaṇṭakavatīṁ vyāghrasiṁhagajākulām ,
durāsadāṁ duṣpraveśāṁ guhāṁ haimavatīmiva.
अग्निना तामसं दुर्गं नौभिराप्यं च गम्यते ।
राजदुर्गावतरणे नोपायं पण्डिता विदुः ॥४०॥
40. agninā tāmasaṁ durgaṁ naubhirāpyaṁ ca gamyate ,
rājadurgāvataraṇe nopāyaṁ paṇḍitā viduḥ.
गहनं भवतो राज्यमन्धकारतमोवृतम् ।
नेह विश्वसितुं शक्यं भवतापि कुतो मया ॥४१॥
41. gahanaṁ bhavato rājyamandhakāratamovṛtam ,
neha viśvasituṁ śakyaṁ bhavatāpi kuto mayā.
अतो नायं शुभो वासस्तुल्ये सदसती इह ।
वधो ह्येवात्र सुकृते दुष्कृते न च संशयः ॥४२॥
42. ato nāyaṁ śubho vāsastulye sadasatī iha ,
vadho hyevātra sukṛte duṣkṛte na ca saṁśayaḥ.
42. ataḥ na ayam śubhaḥ vāsaḥ tulye sadasatī iha
vadhaḥ hi eva atra sukṛte duṣkṛte na ca saṃśayaḥ

42. Therefore, this is not an auspicious dwelling (or stay), as good and evil are balanced here. Indeed, there is certainly ruin (vadhaḥ) here for both virtuous (sukṛte) and wicked (duṣkṛte) actions; there is no doubt about that.
न्यायतो दुष्कृते घातः सुकृते स्यात्कथं वधः ।
नेह युक्तं चिरं स्थातुं जवेनातो व्रजेद्बुधः ॥४३॥
43. nyāyato duṣkṛte ghātaḥ sukṛte syātkathaṁ vadhaḥ ,
neha yuktaṁ ciraṁ sthātuṁ javenāto vrajedbudhaḥ.
43. nyāyataḥ duṣkṛte ghātaḥ sukṛte syāt katham vadhaḥ na
iha yuktam ciram sthātum javena ataḥ vrajet budhaḥ
43. nyāyataḥ duṣkṛte ghātaḥ (bhavati); sukṛte vadhaḥ katham syāt? iha ciram sthātum na yuktam (asti).

43. By natural law (nyāya), destruction (ghātaḥ) comes for evil deeds (duṣkṛte); how then could there be destruction (vadhaḥ) for virtuous deeds (sukṛte)? It is not proper to remain here for a long time. Therefore, a wise person (budhaḥ) should depart swiftly.
सीता नाम नदी राजन्प्लवो यस्यां निमज्जति ।
तथोपमामिमां मन्ये वागुरां सर्वघातिनीम् ॥४४॥
44. sītā nāma nadī rājanplavo yasyāṁ nimajjati ,
tathopamāmimāṁ manye vāgurāṁ sarvaghātinīm.
44. sītā nāma nadī rājan plavaḥ yasyām nimajjati
tathā upamām imām manye vāgurām sarvaghātinīm
44. rājan,
yasyām plavaḥ nimajjati (sā) sītā nāma nadī (asti).
tathā imām sarvaghātinīm vāgurām upamām (aham) manye.
44. O King (rājan), there is a river named Sītā in which even a boat (plavaḥ) sinks. Similarly, I consider this (situation) to be like a snare (vāgurām) that destroys all (sarvaghātinīm).
मधुप्रपातो हि भवान्भोजनं विषसंयुतम् ।
असतामिव ते भावो वर्तते न सतामिव ।
आशीविषैः परिवृतः कूपस्त्वमिव पार्थिव ॥४५॥
45. madhuprapāto hi bhavānbhojanaṁ viṣasaṁyutam ,
asatāmiva te bhāvo vartate na satāmiva ,
āśīviṣaiḥ parivṛtaḥ kūpastvamiva pārthiva.
45. madhuprāpātaḥ hi bhavān bhojanam
viṣasaṃyutam asatām iva te bhāvaḥ
vartate na satām iva āśīviṣaiḥ
parivṛtaḥ kūpaḥ tvam iva pārthiva
45. pārthiva,
bhavān hi madhuprāpātaḥ,
viṣasaṃyutam bhojanam (ca).
te bhāvaḥ asatām iva vartate,
satām iva na (vartate).
tvam āśīviṣaiḥ parivṛtaḥ kūpaḥ iva (asi).
45. Indeed, you (bhavān) are like a honey-trap (madhuprāpātaḥ), food mixed with poison (viṣasaṃyutam). Your disposition (bhāvaḥ) is like that of the wicked (asatām), not like that of the virtuous (satām). O King (pārthiva), you are like a well (kūpaḥ) surrounded by venomous snakes (āśīviṣaiḥ).
दुर्गतीर्था बृहत्कूला करीरीवेत्रसंयुता ।
नदी मधुरपानीया यथा राजंस्तथा भवान् ।
श्वगृध्रगोमायुयुतो राजहंससमो ह्यसि ॥४६॥
46. durgatīrthā bṛhatkūlā karīrīvetrasaṁyutā ,
nadī madhurapānīyā yathā rājaṁstathā bhavān ,
śvagṛdhragomāyuyuto rājahaṁsasamo hyasi.

śvagṛdhragomāyuyutaḥ rājahansasamaḥ hi asi

hi [tvaṃ] śvagṛdhragomāyuyutaḥ rājahansasamaḥ asi.
46. O King, just as a river possesses difficult fords, high banks, and is filled with karīra and vetra plants, yet its water is sweet – so too are you. However, you are associated with dogs, vultures, and jackals, even though you are truly like a royal swan.
यथाश्रित्य महावृक्षं कक्षः संवर्धते महान् ।
ततस्तं संवृणोत्येव तमतीत्य च वर्धते ॥४७॥
47. yathāśritya mahāvṛkṣaṁ kakṣaḥ saṁvardhate mahān ,
tatastaṁ saṁvṛṇotyeva tamatītya ca vardhate.
47. yathā āśritya mahāvṛkṣam kakṣaḥ saṃvardhate mahān
tataḥ tam saṃvṛṇoti eva tam atītya ca vardhate
47. yathā mahān kakṣaḥ mahāvṛkṣam āśritya saṃvardhate,
tataḥ tam eva saṃvṛṇoti,
ca tam atītya vardhate.
47. Just as a great thicket, relying on a large tree, grows, then completely engulfs that tree, and subsequently grows even beyond it.
तेनैवोपेन्धनो नूनं दावो दहति दारुणः ।
तथोपमा ह्यमात्यास्ते राजंस्तान्परिशोधय ॥४८॥
48. tenaivopendhano nūnaṁ dāvo dahati dāruṇaḥ ,
tathopamā hyamātyāste rājaṁstānpariśodhaya.
48. tena eva upendhanaḥ nūnam dāvaḥ dahati dāruṇaḥ
tathā upamā hi amātyāḥ te rājan tān pariśodaya
48. nūnam dāruṇaḥ dāvaḥ tena eva upendhanaḥ [san] dahati.
rājan tathā hi te amātyāḥ upamā [santi]; tān pariśodaya.
48. Certainly, a terrible forest fire burns, fueled by that very (thicket). Similarly, O King, your ministers are like that; therefore, purify them completely.
भवतैव कृता राजन्भवता परिपालिताः ।
भवन्तं पर्यवज्ञाय जिघांसन्ति भवत्प्रियम् ॥४९॥
49. bhavataiva kṛtā rājanbhavatā paripālitāḥ ,
bhavantaṁ paryavajñāya jighāṁsanti bhavatpriyam.
49. bhavatā eva kṛtā rājan bhavatā paripālitāḥ
bhavantam paryavajñāya jighāṃsanti bhavatpriyam
49. rājan,
bhavatā eva kṛtāḥ,
bhavatā [ca] paripālitāḥ [te],

49. O King, they were indeed created by you and nurtured by you; yet, completely disregarding you, they desire to kill what is dear to you.
उषितं शङ्कमानेन प्रमादं परिरक्षता ।
अन्तःसर्प इवागारे वीरपत्न्या इवालये ।
शीलं जिज्ञासमानेन राज्ञश्च सहजीविना ॥५०॥
50. uṣitaṁ śaṅkamānena pramādaṁ parirakṣatā ,
antaḥsarpa ivāgāre vīrapatnyā ivālaye ,
śīlaṁ jijñāsamānena rājñaśca sahajīvinā.

vīrapatnyāḥ iva ālaye śīlam

50. I lived, fearing danger and guarding against carelessness, much like a snake hidden within a house or one residing in the dwelling of a hero's wife. While doing so, I, as a companion to the king, was seeking to ascertain his true character.
कच्चिज्जितेन्द्रियो राजा कच्चिदभ्यन्तरा जिताः ।
कच्चिदेषां प्रियो राजा कच्चिद्राज्ञः प्रियाः प्रजाः ॥५१॥
51. kaccijjitendriyo rājā kaccidabhyantarā jitāḥ ,
kaccideṣāṁ priyo rājā kaccidrājñaḥ priyāḥ prajāḥ.
51. kaccit jitendriyaḥ rājā kaccit abhyantarāḥ jitāḥ
kaccit eṣām priyaḥ rājā kaccit rājñaḥ priyāḥ prajāḥ
51. rājā kaccit jitendriyaḥ? abhyantarāḥ kaccit jitāḥ?
eṣām rājā kaccit priyaḥ? rājñaḥ prajāḥ kaccit priyāḥ?
51. I hope the king has controlled his senses. I hope his internal matters are subdued. I hope the king is beloved by his people. And I hope the subjects are beloved by the king.
जिज्ञासुरिह संप्राप्तस्तवाहं राजसत्तम ।
तस्य मे रोचसे राजन्क्षुधितस्येव भोजनम् ॥५२॥
52. jijñāsuriha saṁprāptastavāhaṁ rājasattama ,
tasya me rocase rājankṣudhitasyeva bhojanam.
52. jijñāsuḥ iha samprāptaḥ tava aham rājasattama
tasya me rocase rājan kṣudhitasya iva bhojanam
52. rājasattama! aham iha tava jijñāsuḥ samprāptaḥ.
rājan! kṣudhitasya bhojanam iva,
tasya me tvam rocase.
52. O best of kings, I have come here as one eager to know about you. O king, you are as pleasing to me as food to a hungry person.
अमात्या मे न रोचन्ते वितृष्णस्य यथोदकम् ।
भवतोऽर्थकृदित्येव मयि दोषो हि तैः कृतः ।
विद्यते कारणं नान्यदिति मे नात्र संशयः ॥५३॥
53. amātyā me na rocante vitṛṣṇasya yathodakam ,
bhavato'rthakṛdityeva mayi doṣo hi taiḥ kṛtaḥ ,
vidyate kāraṇaṁ nānyaditi me nātra saṁśayaḥ.
53. amātyāḥ me na rocante vitṛṣṇasya yathā
udakam bhavataḥ arthakṛt iti eva
mayi doṣaḥ hi taiḥ kṛtaḥ vidyate
kāraṇam na anyat iti me na atra saṃśayaḥ
53. vitṛṣṇasya udakam yathā (na rocate),
(tathā) amātyāḥ me na rocante.
bhavataḥ arthakṛt iti eva mayi taiḥ doṣaḥ hi kṛtaḥ.
anyat kāraṇam na vidyate iti atra me na saṃśayaḥ.
53. Your ministers do not appeal to me, just as water does not appeal to one who is no longer thirsty. Indeed, the fault they have created in me is simply this: that I act for your benefit. I have no doubt that there is no other reason for this.
न हि तेषामहं द्रुग्धस्तत्तेषां दोषवद्गतम् ।
अरेर्हि दुर्हताद्भेयं भग्नपृष्ठादिवोरगात् ॥५४॥
54. na hi teṣāmahaṁ drugdhastatteṣāṁ doṣavadgatam ,
arerhi durhatādbheyaṁ bhagnapṛṣṭhādivoragāt.
54. na hi teṣām aham drughdhaḥ tat teṣām doṣavat gatam
areḥ hi durhatāt bheyām bhagnapṛṣṭhāt iva uragāt
54. aham teṣām na hi drughdhaḥ; tat teṣām doṣavat gatam.
hi areḥ durhatāt bheyām bhagnapṛṣṭhāt uragāt iva.
54. I have certainly not wronged them; rather, their behavior has been faulty. Indeed, one should fear an enemy who has been greatly wronged, just as one fears a snake with a broken back.
राजोवाच ।
भूयसा परिबर्हेण सत्कारेण च भूयसा ।
पूजितो ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ भूयो वस गृहे मम ॥५५॥
55. rājovāca ,
bhūyasā paribarheṇa satkāreṇa ca bhūyasā ,
pūjito brāhmaṇaśreṣṭha bhūyo vasa gṛhe mama.
55. rājā uvāca bhūyasā paribarheṇa satkāreṇa ca bhūyasā
pūjitaḥ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭha bhūyaḥ vasa gṛhe mama
55. rājā uvāca: brāhmaṇaśreṣṭha,
bhūyasā paribarheṇa ca bhūyasā satkāreṇa pūjitaḥ,
bhūyaḥ mama gṛhe vasa.
55. The king said: "O best among Brahmins, since you have been honored with ample provisions and great hospitality, please reside again in my home."
ये त्वां ब्राह्मण नेच्छन्ति न ते वत्स्यन्ति मे गृहे ।
भवतैव हि तज्ज्ञेयं यदिदानीमनन्तरम् ॥५६॥
56. ye tvāṁ brāhmaṇa necchanti na te vatsyanti me gṛhe ,
bhavataiva hi tajjñeyaṁ yadidānīmanantaram.
56. ye tvām brāhmaṇa na icchanti na te vatsyanti me
gṛhe bhavatā eva hi tat jñeyam yat idānīm anantaram
56. brāhmaṇa,
ye tvām na icchanti,
te me gṛhe na vatsyanti.
hi bhavatā eva tat jñeyam yat idānīm anantaram (kartavyam).
56. "O Brahmin, those who do not wish for your presence shall not dwell in my house. Indeed, you yourself must determine what is to be done immediately hereafter."
यथा स्याद्दुष्कृतो दण्डो यथा च सुकृतं कृतम् ।
तथा समीक्ष्य भगवञ्श्रेयसे विनियुङ्क्ष्व माम् ॥५७॥
57. yathā syādduṣkṛto daṇḍo yathā ca sukṛtaṁ kṛtam ,
tathā samīkṣya bhagavañśreyase viniyuṅkṣva mām.
57. yathā syāt duṣkṛtaḥ daṇḍaḥ yathā ca sukṛtam kṛtam
tathā samīkṣya bhagavan śreyase viniyuṅkṣva mām
57. bhagavan,
yathā duṣkṛtaḥ daṇḍaḥ syāt,
ca yathā sukṛtam kṛtam (bhavet),
tathā samīkṣya,
mām śreyase viniyuṅkṣva.
57. Just as there should be punishment for wrongdoing, and just as good deeds are rewarded, so too, O Revered One (Bhagavan), considering this, please employ me for my benefit.
मुनिरुवाच ।
अदर्शयन्निमं दोषमेकैकं दुर्बलं कुरु ।
ततः कारणमाज्ञाय पुरुषं पुरुषं जहि ॥५८॥
58. muniruvāca ,
adarśayannimaṁ doṣamekaikaṁ durbalaṁ kuru ,
tataḥ kāraṇamājñāya puruṣaṁ puruṣaṁ jahi.
58. muniḥ uvāca adarśayan imam doṣam ekaikam durbalam
kuru tataḥ kāraṇam ājñāya puruṣam puruṣam jahi
58. muniḥ uvāca imam doṣam adarśayan ekaikam durbalam
kuru tataḥ kāraṇam ājñāya puruṣam puruṣam jahi
58. The sage said: Without revealing this flaw, weaken each (opponent) one by one. Then, having understood the reason, defeat each man (puruṣa).
एकदोषा हि बहवो मृद्नीयुरपि कण्टकान् ।
मन्त्रभेदभयाद्राजंस्तस्मादेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥५९॥
59. ekadoṣā hi bahavo mṛdnīyurapi kaṇṭakān ,
mantrabhedabhayādrājaṁstasmādetadbravīmi te.
59. ekadoṣāḥ hi bahavaḥ mṛdnīyuḥ api kaṇṭakān
mantrabhedabhayāt rājan tasmāt etat bravīmi te
59. hi bahavaḥ ekadoṣāḥ api kaṇṭakān mṛdnīyuḥ
rājan tasmāt mantrabhedabhayāt etat te bravīmi
59. Indeed, many (opponents), by targeting a single flaw, can crush even formidable adversaries (like thorns). Therefore, O King, I tell you this out of fear that your strategic counsel (mantra) might be exposed.
वयं तु ब्राह्मणा नाम मृदुदण्डाः कृपालवः ।
स्वस्ति चेच्छामि भवतः परेषां च यथात्मनः ॥६०॥
60. vayaṁ tu brāhmaṇā nāma mṛdudaṇḍāḥ kṛpālavaḥ ,
svasti cecchāmi bhavataḥ pareṣāṁ ca yathātmanaḥ.
60. vayam tu brāhmaṇāḥ nāma mṛdudaṇḍāḥ kṛpālavaḥ
svasti ca icchāmi bhavataḥ pareṣām ca yathātmanaḥ
60. vayam tu brāhmaṇāḥ nāma mṛdudaṇḍāḥ kṛpālavaḥ ca
svasti icchāmi bhavataḥ pareṣām ca yathātmanaḥ
60. But we are Brahmins by nature, lenient in punishment and compassionate. And I wish for your well-being, and for that of others, just as I wish for my own self (ātman).
राजन्नात्मानमाचक्षे संबन्धी भवतो ह्यहम् ।
मुनिः कालकवृक्षीय इत्येवमभिसंज्ञितः ॥६१॥
61. rājannātmānamācakṣe saṁbandhī bhavato hyaham ,
muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīya ityevamabhisaṁjñitaḥ.
61. rājan ātmanam ācakṣe sambandhī bhavataḥ hi aham
muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīyaḥ iti evam abhisamjñitaḥ
61. rājan aham ātmanam ācakṣe hi bhavataḥ sambandhī
muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīyaḥ iti evam abhisamjñitaḥ
61. O King, I reveal myself (ātman) to you; for I am indeed related to you. I am thus designated as the sage Kālakavṛkṣīya.
पितुः सखा च भवतः संमतः सत्यसंगरः ।
व्यापन्ने भवतो राज्ये राजन्पितरि संस्थिते ॥६२॥
62. pituḥ sakhā ca bhavataḥ saṁmataḥ satyasaṁgaraḥ ,
vyāpanne bhavato rājye rājanpitari saṁsthite.
62. pituḥ sakhā ca bhavataḥ saṃmataḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ
vyāpanne bhavataḥ rājye rājan pitari saṃsthite
62. rājan pituḥ ca bhavataḥ saṃmataḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ
sakhā bhavataḥ rājye pitari saṃsthite vyāpanne
62. He is a respected friend of your father, truthful in his vows. O King, your kingdom was in a state of ruin when your father passed away.
सर्वकामान्परित्यज्य तपस्तप्तं तदा मया ।
स्नेहात्त्वां प्रब्रवीम्येतन्मा भूयो विभ्रमेदिति ॥६३॥
63. sarvakāmānparityajya tapastaptaṁ tadā mayā ,
snehāttvāṁ prabravīmyetanmā bhūyo vibhramediti.
63. sarvakāmān parityajya tapaḥ taptaṃ tadā mayā snehāt
tvām prabravīmi etat mā bhūyaḥ vibhramet iti
63. tadā mayā sarvakāmān parityajya tapaḥ taptaṃ snehāt
etat tvām prabravīmi iti mā bhūyaḥ vibhramet
63. At that time, abandoning all desires, I performed severe asceticism (tapas). Out of affection, I tell you this, so that you may not be bewildered again.
उभे दृष्ट्वा दुःखसुखे राज्यं प्राप्य यदृच्छया ।
राज्येनामात्यसंस्थेन कथं राजन्प्रमाद्यसि ॥६४॥
64. ubhe dṛṣṭvā duḥkhasukhe rājyaṁ prāpya yadṛcchayā ,
rājyenāmātyasaṁsthena kathaṁ rājanpramādyasi.
64. ubhe dṛṣṭvā duḥkhasukhe rājyaṃ prāpya yadṛcchayā
rājyena amātyasaṃsthena kathaṃ rājan pramādyasi
64. rājan ubhe duḥkhasukhe dṛṣṭvā yadṛcchayā rājyaṃ
prāpya amātyasaṃsthena rājyena kathaṃ pramādyasi
64. O King, having experienced both suffering and happiness, and having obtained the kingdom by chance, how can you be negligent concerning a kingdom that is dependent on ministers?
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततो राजकुले नान्दी संजज्ञे भूयसी पुनः ।
पुरोहितकुले चैव संप्राप्ते ब्राह्मणर्षभे ॥६५॥
65. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tato rājakule nāndī saṁjajñe bhūyasī punaḥ ,
purohitakule caiva saṁprāpte brāhmaṇarṣabhe.
65. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tataḥ rājakule nāndī saṃjajñe bhūyasī
punaḥ purohitakule ca eva samprāpte brāhmaṇarṣabhe
65. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tataḥ punaḥ rājakule ca eva purohitakule
brāhmaṇarṣabhe samprāpte bhūyasī nāndī saṃjajñe
65. Bhishma said: Then, a great celebration (nāndī) again arose in the royal household, and indeed in the household of the chief priest (purohita), upon the arrival of the foremost among Brahmins (brāhmaṇa).
एकच्छत्रां महीं कृत्वा कौसल्याय यशस्विने ।
मुनिः कालकवृक्षीय ईजे क्रतुभिरुत्तमैः ॥६६॥
66. ekacchatrāṁ mahīṁ kṛtvā kausalyāya yaśasvine ,
muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīya īje kratubhiruttamaiḥ.
66. ekacchatrām mahīm kṛtvā kausalyāya yaśasvine
muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīyaḥ īje kratubhiḥ uttamaiḥ
66. muniḥ kālakavṛkṣīyaḥ kausalyāya yaśasvine
ekacchatrām mahīm kṛtvā uttamaiḥ kratubhiḥ īje
66. Having established the earth under a single dominion for the illustrious Kausalya, the sage of the Kālaka tree lineage performed excellent sacrifices.
हितं तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कौसल्योऽन्वशिषन्महीम् ।
तथा च कृतवान्राजा यथोक्तं तेन भारत ॥६७॥
67. hitaṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā kausalyo'nvaśiṣanmahīm ,
tathā ca kṛtavānrājā yathoktaṁ tena bhārata.
67. hitam tat vacanam śrutvā kausalyaḥ anvaśiṣat mahīm
tathā ca kṛtavān rājā yathā uktam tena bhārata
67. bhārata,
kausalyaḥ tat hitam vacanam śrutvā mahīm anvaśiṣat .
ca rājā tena yathā uktam tathā kṛtavān .
67. O Bhārata, having heard that beneficial advice, Kausalya ruled the earth. And the king acted exactly as it was told by him.
