गिरिपृष्ठं समारुह्य सुतो व्यासस्य भारत ।
समे देशे विविक्ते च निःशलाक उपाविशत् ॥१॥

1. Bhishma said: "O descendant of Bharata, the son of Vyasa, having ascended a mountain ridge, then sat down in a level, secluded place, being free from obstacles."
धारयामास चात्मानं यथाशास्त्रं महामुनिः ।
पादात्प्रभृति गात्रेषु क्रमेण क्रमयोगवित् ॥२॥
2. dhārayāmāsa cātmānaṁ yathāśāstraṁ mahāmuniḥ ,
pādātprabhṛti gātreṣu krameṇa kramayogavit.

2. And the great sage (muni), expert in the gradual method of yoga (yoga), concentrated his attention (ātman) upon his limbs, starting from his feet, in a systematic manner according to scriptural injunctions.
ततः स प्राङ्मुखो विद्वानादित्ये नचिरोदिते ।
पाणिपादं समाधाय विनीतवदुपाविशत् ॥३॥
3. tataḥ sa prāṅmukho vidvānāditye nacirodite ,
pāṇipādaṁ samādhāya vinītavadupāviśat.

3. Then, that wise one (vidvān), facing east, with the sun (āditya) having just risen, humbly sat down, having composed his hands and feet (into a meditative posture).
न तत्र पक्षिसंघातो न शब्दो नापि दर्शनम् ।
यत्र वैयासकिर्धीमान्योक्तुं समुपचक्रमे ॥४॥
4. na tatra pakṣisaṁghāto na śabdo nāpi darśanam ,
yatra vaiyāsakirdhīmānyoktuṁ samupacakrame.

4. In that place, there was no flock of birds, no sound, nor any sight, where the wise son of Vyāsa (Śuka) began to practice (yoga).
स ददर्श तदात्मानं सर्वसङ्गविनिःसृतम् ।
प्रजहास ततो हासं शुकः संप्रेक्ष्य भास्करम् ॥५॥
5. sa dadarśa tadātmānaṁ sarvasaṅgaviniḥsṛtam ,
prajahāsa tato hāsaṁ śukaḥ saṁprekṣya bhāskaram.
5. saḥ dadarśa tadā ātmānam sarvasaṅgavinissṛtam
prajahāsa tataḥ hāsam śukaḥ samprekṣya bhāskaram
5. tadā saḥ sarvasaṅgavinissṛtam ātmānam dadarśa

5. He then saw himself (his ātman) as being completely free from all attachments. Thereupon, Śuka laughed upon seeing the sun.
स पुनर्योगमास्थाय मोक्षमार्गोपलब्धये ।
महायोगीश्वरो भूत्वा सोऽत्यक्रामद्विहायसम् ॥६॥
6. sa punaryogamāsthāya mokṣamārgopalabdhaye ,
mahāyogīśvaro bhūtvā so'tyakrāmadvihāyasam.
6. saḥ punar yogam āsthāya mokṣamārgopalabdhaye
mahāyogeśvaraḥ bhūtvā saḥ atyakrāmat vihāyasam
6. saḥ punar mokṣamārgopalabdhaye yogam āsthāya
mahāyogeśvaraḥ bhūtvā saḥ vihāyasam atyakrāmat
6. Having again practiced (yoga) for the attainment of the path to liberation (mokṣa), and having become a great master of (yoga) (mahāyogeśvara), he transcended the sky.
ततः प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा देवर्षिं नारदं तदा ।
निवेदयामास तदा स्वं योगं परमर्षये ॥७॥
7. tataḥ pradakṣiṇaṁ kṛtvā devarṣiṁ nāradaṁ tadā ,
nivedayāmāsa tadā svaṁ yogaṁ paramarṣaye.
7. tataḥ pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā devarṣim nāradam tadā
nivedayāmāsa tadā svam yogam paramarṣaye
7. tataḥ tadā devarṣim nāradam pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā

7. Then, having circumambulated the divine sage Nārada, he presented his (yoga) to the great sage.
दृष्टो मार्गः प्रवृत्तोऽस्मि स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु तपोधन ।
त्वत्प्रसादाद्गमिष्यामि गतिमिष्टां महाद्युते ॥८॥
8. dṛṣṭo mārgaḥ pravṛtto'smi svasti te'stu tapodhana ,
tvatprasādādgamiṣyāmi gatimiṣṭāṁ mahādyute.
8. dṛṣṭaḥ mārgaḥ pravṛttaḥ asmi svasti te astu tapodhana
tvat-prasādāt gamiṣyāmi gatim iṣṭām mahādyute
8. dṛṣṭaḥ mārgaḥ asmi pravṛttaḥ te svasti astu tapodhana
mahādyute tvat-prasādāt iṣṭām gatim gamiṣyāmi
8. The path has been shown to me, and I have begun. May well-being be with you, O ascetic. By your grace, O greatly radiant one, I shall reach my desired destination.
नारदेनाभ्यनुज्ञातस्ततो द्वैपायनात्मजः ।
अभिवाद्य पुनर्योगमास्थायाकाशमाविशत् ॥९॥
9. nāradenābhyanujñātastato dvaipāyanātmajaḥ ,
abhivādya punaryogamāsthāyākāśamāviśat.
9. nāradena abhyanujñātaḥ tataḥ dvaipāyanātmajaḥ
abhivādya punar yogam āsthāya ākāśam āviśat

9. Then, the son of Dvaipāyana, having been granted permission by Nārada, bowed again and, taking up his spiritual practice (yoga), entered the sky.
कैलासपृष्ठादुत्पत्य स पपात दिवं तदा ।
अन्तरिक्षचरः श्रीमान्व्यासपुत्रः सुनिश्चितः ॥१०॥
10. kailāsapṛṣṭhādutpatya sa papāta divaṁ tadā ,
antarikṣacaraḥ śrīmānvyāsaputraḥ suniścitaḥ.
10. kailāsapṛṣṭhāt utpatya saḥ papāta divam tadā
antarikṣacaraḥ śrīmān vyāsaputraḥ suniścitaḥ
10. tada saḥ kailāsapṛṣṭhāt utpatya divam papāta
antarikṣacaraḥ śrīmān vyāsaputraḥ suniścitaḥ (āsi)
10. Having sprung up from the summit of Kailāsa, he then soared into the sky. The glorious son of Vyāsa, firmly resolved, moved through the atmosphere.
तमुद्यन्तं द्विजश्रेष्ठं वैनतेयसमद्युतिम् ।
ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि मनोमारुतरंहसम् ॥११॥
11. tamudyantaṁ dvijaśreṣṭhaṁ vainateyasamadyutim ,
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni manomārutaraṁhasam.
11. tam udyantam dvijaśreṣṭham vainateyasamadyutim
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni manomārutarahasam
11. sarvabhūtāni tam udyantam dvijaśreṣṭham
vainateyasamadyutim manomārutarahasam dadṛśuḥ
11. All beings beheld him ascending, that foremost among the twice-born, whose brilliance was equal to Garuḍa's, and whose speed was like that of the mind and the wind.
व्यवसायेन लोकांस्त्रीन्सर्वान्सोऽथ विचिन्तयन् ।
आस्थितो दिव्यमध्वानं पावकार्कसमप्रभः ॥१२॥
12. vyavasāyena lokāṁstrīnsarvānso'tha vicintayan ,
āsthito divyamadhvānaṁ pāvakārkasamaprabhaḥ.
12. vyavasāyena lokān trīn sarvān saḥ atha vicintayan
āsthitaḥ divyam adhvanam pāvakārkasamaprabhaḥ
12. atha saḥ vyavasāyena sarvān trīn lokān vicintayan
pāvakārkasamaprabhaḥ divyam adhvanam āsthitaḥ
12. Then, contemplating all three worlds with firm resolve, he ascended the divine path, radiant like fire and the sun.
तमेकमनसं यान्तमव्यग्रमकुतोभयम् ।
ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि जङ्गमानीतराणि च ॥१३॥
13. tamekamanasaṁ yāntamavyagramakutobhayam ,
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni jaṅgamānītarāṇi ca.
13. tam ekamanasam yāntam avyagram akutobhayam
dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni jaṅgamāni itarāṇi ca
13. sarvabhūtāni jaṅgamāni itarāṇi ca tam
ekamanasam avyagram akutobhayam yāntam dadṛśuḥ
13. All creatures, both moving and stationary, saw him proceeding, single-minded, undisturbed, and fearless.
यथाशक्ति यथान्यायं पूजयां चक्रिरे तदा ।
पुष्पवर्षैश्च दिव्यैस्तमवचक्रुर्दिवौकसः ॥१४॥
14. yathāśakti yathānyāyaṁ pūjayāṁ cakrire tadā ,
puṣpavarṣaiśca divyaistamavacakrurdivaukasaḥ.
14. yathāśakti yathānyāyam pūjayām cakrire tadā
puṣpavarṣaiḥ ca divyaiḥ tam avacakruḥ divaukasaḥ
14. tadā divaukasaḥ yathāśakti yathānyāyam pūjayām
cakrire ca divyaiḥ puṣpavarṣaiḥ tam avacakruḥ
14. Then, the celestial beings (divaukasaḥ) honored him according to their capacity and suitably, showering him with divine flowers.
तं दृष्ट्वा विस्मिताः सर्वे गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणाः ।
ऋषयश्चैव संसिद्धाः परं विस्मयमागताः ॥१५॥
15. taṁ dṛṣṭvā vismitāḥ sarve gandharvāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ ,
ṛṣayaścaiva saṁsiddhāḥ paraṁ vismayamāgatāḥ.
15. tam dṛṣṭvā vismitāḥ sarve gandharvāpsarasām gaṇāḥ
ṛṣayaḥ ca eva saṁsiddhāḥ param vismayam āgatāḥ
15. tam dṛṣṭvā sarve gandharvāpsarasām gaṇāḥ ca eva
saṁsiddhāḥ ṛṣayaḥ vismitāḥ param vismayam āgatāḥ
15. After seeing him, all the throngs of Gandharvas and Apsaras, as well as the perfected sages, were filled with extreme astonishment.
अन्तरिक्षचरः कोऽयं तपसा सिद्धिमागतः ।
अधःकायोर्ध्ववक्त्रश्च नेत्रैः समभिवाह्यते ॥१६॥
16. antarikṣacaraḥ ko'yaṁ tapasā siddhimāgataḥ ,
adhaḥkāyordhvavaktraśca netraiḥ samabhivāhyate.
16. antarīkṣacaraḥ kaḥ ayam tapasā siddhim āgataḥ
adhaḥkāyaḥ ūrdhvavaktraḥ ca netraiḥ samabhivāhyate
16. ayam antarīkṣacaraḥ kaḥ tapasā siddhim āgataḥ
adhaḥkāyaḥ ūrdhvavaktraḥ ca netraiḥ samabhivāhyate
16. Who is this being moving in the sky, who has attained spiritual power (siddhi) through asceticism (tapas)? His lower body is invisible, his face is upturned, and he is borne along by his eyes.
ततः परमधीरात्मा त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतः ।
भास्करं समुदीक्षन्स प्राङ्मुखो वाग्यतोऽगमत् ।
शब्देनाकाशमखिलं पूरयन्निव सर्वतः ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ paramadhīrātmā triṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ ,
bhāskaraṁ samudīkṣansa prāṅmukho vāgyato'gamat ,
śabdenākāśamakhilaṁ pūrayanniva sarvataḥ.
17. tataḥ paramadhīrātmā triṣu lokeṣu
viśrutaḥ bhāskaram samudīkṣan saḥ
prāṅmukhaḥ vāgyataḥ agamat śabdena
ākāśam akhilam pūrayan iva sarvataḥ

paramadhīrātmā saḥ prāṅmukhaḥ vāgyataḥ
bhāskaram samudīkṣan akhilam ākāśam
śabdena sarvataḥ pūrayan iva agamat
17. Then, that supremely resolute being, renowned in the three worlds, proceeded (agamat) with his face turned towards the east and his speech controlled, gazing intently at the sun (Bhāskara), as if filling the entire sky with his sound from all directions.
तमापतन्तं सहसा दृष्ट्वा सर्वाप्सरोगणाः ।
संभ्रान्तमनसो राजन्नासन्परमविस्मिताः ।
पञ्चचूडाप्रभृतयो भृशमुत्फुल्ललोचनाः ॥१८॥
18. tamāpatantaṁ sahasā dṛṣṭvā sarvāpsarogaṇāḥ ,
saṁbhrāntamanaso rājannāsanparamavismitāḥ ,
pañcacūḍāprabhṛtayo bhṛśamutphullalocanāḥ.
18. tam āpatantam sahasā dṛṣṭvā
sarvāpsarogaṇāḥ sambhrāntamanasaḥ
rājan āsan paramavismitāḥ
pañcacūḍāprabhṛtayaḥ bhṛśam utphullalocanāḥ
18. rājan,
sahasā tam āpatantam dṛṣṭvā sarvāpsarogaṇāḥ sambhrāntamanasaḥ paramavismitāḥ āsan pañcacūḍāprabhṛtayaḥ bhṛśam utphullalocanāḥ
18. O King, seeing him suddenly approaching, all the hosts of celestial nymphs (apsarogaṇāḥ), with agitated minds, became utterly astonished. Those like Pañcacūḍā and others had their eyes greatly wide open.
दैवतं कतमं ह्येतदुत्तमां गतिमास्थितम् ।
सुनिश्चितमिहायाति विमुक्तमिव निःस्पृहम् ॥१९॥
19. daivataṁ katamaṁ hyetaduttamāṁ gatimāsthitam ,
suniścitamihāyāti vimuktamiva niḥspṛham.
19. daivatam katamam hi etat uttamām gatim āsthitam
suniścitam iha āyāti vimuktam iva niḥspṛham
19. hi etat katamam daivatam uttamām gatim āsthitam
suniścitam vimuktam iva niḥspṛham iha āyāti
19. Which deity (daivatam) is this, who has attained the highest state (gati)? He comes here with firm resolve, like one liberated (vimukta) and free from desire.
ततः समतिचक्राम मलयं नाम पर्वतम् ।
उर्वशी पूर्वचित्तिश्च यं नित्यमुपसेवते ।
ते स्म ब्रह्मर्षिपुत्रस्य विस्मयं ययतुः परम् ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ samaticakrāma malayaṁ nāma parvatam ,
urvaśī pūrvacittiśca yaṁ nityamupasevate ,
te sma brahmarṣiputrasya vismayaṁ yayatuḥ param.
20. tataḥ samaticakrāma malayam nāma
parvatam urvaśī pūrvacittiḥ ca yam
nityam upasevate te sma
brahmarṣiputrasya vismayam yayatuḥ param

20. Then he completely crossed over the mountain named Malaya, which Urvaśī and Pūrvacitti always frequent. They (Urvaśī and Pūrvacitti) were greatly astonished by the son of the brahmin sage.
अहो बुद्धिसमाधानं वेदाभ्यासरते द्विजे ।
अचिरेणैव कालेन नभश्चरति चन्द्रवत् ।
पितृशुश्रूषया सिद्धिं संप्राप्तोऽयमनुत्तमाम् ॥२१॥
21. aho buddhisamādhānaṁ vedābhyāsarate dvije ,
acireṇaiva kālena nabhaścarati candravat ,
pitṛśuśrūṣayā siddhiṁ saṁprāpto'yamanuttamām.
21. aho buddhisamādhānam vedābhyāsarate
dvije acireṇa eva kālena nabhaḥ
carati candravat pitṛśuśrūṣayā
siddhim samprāptaḥ ayam anuttamām

21. Oh, what mental concentration in this twice-born (dvija) individual, who is devoted to Vedic study! In a very short time, he moves through the sky like the moon. This one has attained supreme perfection (siddhi) through his service to his father.
पितृभक्तो दृढतपाः पितुः सुदयितः सुतः ।
अनन्यमनसा तेन कथं पित्रा विवर्जितः ॥२२॥
22. pitṛbhakto dṛḍhatapāḥ pituḥ sudayitaḥ sutaḥ ,
ananyamanasā tena kathaṁ pitrā vivarjitaḥ.
22. pitṛbhaktaḥ dṛḍhatapāḥ pituḥ sudayitaḥ sutaḥ
ananyamanasā tena katham pitrā vivarjitaḥ

22. A son devoted to his father, of firm asceticism (tapas), and very dear to his father – how could he have been abandoned by his father, despite his unwavering devotion?
उर्वश्या वचनं श्रुत्वा शुकः परमधर्मवित् ।
उदैक्षत दिशः सर्वा वचने गतमानसः ॥२३॥
23. urvaśyā vacanaṁ śrutvā śukaḥ paramadharmavit ,
udaikṣata diśaḥ sarvā vacane gatamānasaḥ.
23. urvaśyā vacanam śrutvā śukaḥ paramadharmavit
udaikṣata diśaḥ sarvāḥ vacane gatamanasaḥ

23. Having heard Urvaśī's words, Śuka, a knower of the supreme natural law (dharma), looked up in all directions, his mind absorbed in her statement.
सोऽन्तरिक्षं महीं चैव सशैलवनकाननाम् ।
आलोकयामास तदा सरांसि सरितस्तथा ॥२४॥
24. so'ntarikṣaṁ mahīṁ caiva saśailavanakānanām ,
ālokayāmāsa tadā sarāṁsi saritastathā.
24. saḥ antarikṣam mahīm ca eva saśailavanakānanām
ālokayāmāsa tadā sarāṃsi saritaḥ tathā
24. tadā saḥ saśailavanakānanām mahīm ca antarikṣam
sarāṃsi tathā saritaḥ eva ālokayāmāsa
24. Then he surveyed the sky, the earth with its mountains, forests, and groves, as well as the lakes and rivers.
ततो द्वैपायनसुतं बहुमानपुरःसरम् ।
कृताञ्जलिपुटाः सर्वा निरीक्षन्ते स्म देवताः ॥२५॥
25. tato dvaipāyanasutaṁ bahumānapuraḥsaram ,
kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ sarvā nirīkṣante sma devatāḥ.
25. tataḥ dvaipāyanasutam bahumānapuraḥsaram
kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ sarvāḥ nirīkṣante sma devatāḥ
25. tataḥ sarvāḥ devatāḥ kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ
bahumānapuraḥsaram dvaipāyanasutam nirīkṣante sma
25. Then, all the deities, with folded hands, respectfully looked at Dvaipāyana's son.
अब्रवीत्तास्तदा वाक्यं शुकः परमधर्मवित् ।
पिता यद्यनुगच्छेन्मां क्रोशमानः शुकेति वै ॥२६॥
26. abravīttāstadā vākyaṁ śukaḥ paramadharmavit ,
pitā yadyanugacchenmāṁ krośamānaḥ śuketi vai.
26. abravīt tāḥ tadā vākyam śukaḥ paramadharmavit
pitā yadi anugacchet mām krośamānaḥ śuka iti vai
26. tadā paramadharmavit śukaḥ tāḥ vākyam abravīt:
"yadi pitā vai krośamānaḥ 'śuka' iti mām anugacchet"
26. Then Śuka, the knower of the supreme natural law (dharma), spoke this statement to them: 'If my father follows me, indeed calling out "Śuka!"'
ततः प्रतिवचो देयं सर्वैरेव समाहितैः ।
एतन्मे स्नेहतः सर्वे वचनं कर्तुमर्हथ ॥२७॥
27. tataḥ prativaco deyaṁ sarvaireva samāhitaiḥ ,
etanme snehataḥ sarve vacanaṁ kartumarhatha.
27. tataḥ prativacaḥ deyam sarvaiḥ eva samāhitaiḥ
etat me snehatas sarve vacanam kartum arhatha
27. tataḥ prativacaḥ sarvaiḥ eva samāhitaiḥ deyam.
sarve me snehatas etat vacanam kartum arhatha
27. Therefore, an answer should be given by all of you with full attention. Out of affection for me, all of you should fulfill this request.
शुकस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा दिशः सवनकाननाः ।
समुद्राः सरितः शैलाः प्रत्यूचुस्तं समन्ततः ॥२८॥
28. śukasya vacanaṁ śrutvā diśaḥ savanakānanāḥ ,
samudrāḥ saritaḥ śailāḥ pratyūcustaṁ samantataḥ.
28. śukasya vacanam śrutvā diśaḥ savanakānanāḥ
samudrāḥ saritaḥ śailāḥ pratyūcuḥ tam samantataḥ
28. śukasya vacanam śrutvā savanakānanāḥ diśaḥ

28. Hearing the words of Śuka, the directions with their forests and groves, the oceans, rivers, and mountains all replied to him from every side.
यथाज्ञापयसे विप्र बाढमेवं भविष्यति ।
ऋषेर्व्याहरतो वाक्यं प्रतिवक्ष्यामहे वयम् ॥२९॥
29. yathājñāpayase vipra bāḍhamevaṁ bhaviṣyati ,
ṛṣervyāharato vākyaṁ prativakṣyāmahe vayam.
29. yathā jñāpayase vipra bāḍham evam bhaviṣyati
ṛṣeḥ vyāharataḥ vākyam prativakṣyāmahe vayam
29. vipra yathā jñāpayase,
bāḍham evam bhaviṣyati.
vayam ṛṣeḥ vyāharataḥ vākyam prativakṣyāmahe.
29. "As you command, O brahmin (vipra), so it shall certainly be. We will repeat/reply to the words spoken by the sage."
