वैशंपायन उवाच ।
युधिष्ठिरस्य नृपतेर्दुर्योधनपितुस्तथा ।
नान्तरं ददृशू राजन्पुरुषाः प्रणयं प्रति ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhirasya nṛpaterduryodhanapitustathā ,
nāntaraṁ dadṛśū rājanpuruṣāḥ praṇayaṁ prati.

tathā na antaram dadṛśuḥ rājan puruṣāḥ praṇayam prati

1. Vaiśampāyana said: "O King, the people could not discern any difference in affection (displayed) between King Yudhiṣṭhira and Duryodhana's father (Dhṛtarāṣṭra)."
यदा तु कौरवो राजा पुत्रं सस्मार बालिशम् ।
तदा भीमं हृदा राजन्नपध्याति स पार्थिवः ॥२॥
2. yadā tu kauravo rājā putraṁ sasmāra bāliśam ,
tadā bhīmaṁ hṛdā rājannapadhyāti sa pārthivaḥ.
2. yadā tu kauravaḥ rājā putram sasmāra bāliśam
tadā bhīmam hṛdā rājan apadhyāti saḥ pārthivaḥ
2. rājan yadā tu kauravaḥ rājā bāliśam putram sasmāra,
tadā saḥ pārthivaḥ hṛdā bhīmam apadhyāti
2. O King, when the Kuru king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) remembered his foolish son (Duryodhana), then that monarch (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) in his heart thought ill of Bhima.
तथैव भीमसेनोऽपि धृतराष्ट्रं जनाधिपम् ।
नामर्षयत राजेन्द्र सदैवातुष्टवद्धृदा ॥३॥
3. tathaiva bhīmaseno'pi dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ janādhipam ,
nāmarṣayata rājendra sadaivātuṣṭavaddhṛdā.
3. tathā eva bhīmasenaḥ api dhṛtarāṣṭram janādhipam
na amarṣayata rājendra sadā eva atuṣṭavat hṛdā
3. O king of kings, similarly, Bhimasena also did not tolerate Dhritarashtra, the lord of the people, always with a discontented heart.
अप्रकाशान्यप्रियाणि चकारास्य वृकोदरः ।
आज्ञां प्रत्यहरच्चापि कृतकैः पुरुषैः सदा ॥४॥
4. aprakāśānyapriyāṇi cakārāsya vṛkodaraḥ ,
ājñāṁ pratyaharaccāpi kṛtakaiḥ puruṣaiḥ sadā.
4. aprakāśāni apriyāṇi ca cakāra asya vṛkodaraḥ
ājñām prati aharat ca api kṛtakaiḥ puruṣaiḥ sadā
4. Vrikodara (Bhima) performed secret and disagreeable acts against him, and he always thwarted his commands even with hired men.
अथ भीमः सुहृन्मध्ये बाहुशब्दं तथाकरोत् ।
संश्रवे धृतराष्ट्रस्य गान्धार्याश्चाप्यमर्षणः ॥५॥
5. atha bhīmaḥ suhṛnmadhye bāhuśabdaṁ tathākarot ,
saṁśrave dhṛtarāṣṭrasya gāndhāryāścāpyamarṣaṇaḥ.
5. atha bhīmaḥ suhṛt madhye bāhuśabdam tathā akarot
saṃśrave dhṛtarāṣṭrasya gāndhāryāḥ ca api amarṣaṇaḥ
5. Then, indignant, Bhima made a challenging sound with his arms (bāhuśabda) among his friends, within the hearing of both Dhritarashtra and Gandhari.
स्मृत्वा दुर्योधनं शत्रुं कर्णदुःशासनावपि ।
प्रोवाचाथ सुसंरब्धो भीमः स परुषं वचः ॥६॥
6. smṛtvā duryodhanaṁ śatruṁ karṇaduḥśāsanāvapi ,
provācātha susaṁrabdho bhīmaḥ sa paruṣaṁ vacaḥ.
6. smṛtvā duryodhanam śatrum karṇaduḥśāsanau api pra
uvāca atha su saṃrabdhaḥ bhīmaḥ saḥ paruṣam vacaḥ
6. Then, having remembered Duryodhana, his enemy, and also Karna and Duhshasana, Bhima, greatly enraged, spoke harsh words.
अन्धस्य नृपतेः पुत्रा मया परिघबाहुना ।
नीता लोकममुं सर्वे नानाशस्त्रात्तजीविताः ॥७॥
7. andhasya nṛpateḥ putrā mayā parighabāhunā ,
nītā lokamamuṁ sarve nānāśastrāttajīvitāḥ.

nītāḥ lokam amum sarve nānāśastrāttajīvitāḥ
7. mayā parighabāhunā andhasya nṛpateḥ sarve

7. By me, whose arms are like maces, all the sons of the blind king have been sent to that other world, their lives taken by various weapons.
इमौ तौ परिघप्रख्यौ भुजौ मम दुरासदौ ।
ययोरन्तरमासाद्य धार्तराष्ट्राः क्षयं गताः ॥८॥
8. imau tau parighaprakhyau bhujau mama durāsadau ,
yayorantaramāsādya dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ kṣayaṁ gatāḥ.
8. imau tau parighaprakhyau bhujau mama durāsadau
yayoḥ antaram āsādya dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ kṣayam gatāḥ
8. imau tau mama durāsadau parighaprakhyau bhujau,
yayoḥ antaram āsādya dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ kṣayam gatāḥ
8. These are my two formidable arms, resembling maces, by coming within the grasp of which the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra met their destruction.
ताविमौ चन्दनेनाक्तौ वन्दनीयौ च मे भुजौ ।
याभ्यां दुर्योधनो नीतः क्षयं ससुतबान्धवः ॥९॥
9. tāvimau candanenāktau vandanīyau ca me bhujau ,
yābhyāṁ duryodhano nītaḥ kṣayaṁ sasutabāndhavaḥ.
9. tau imau candanenāktau vandanīyau ca me bhujau
yābhyām duryodhanaḥ nītaḥ kṣayam sasutabāndhavaḥ
9. tau imau me vandanīyau ca candanenāktau bhujau,
yābhyām duryodhanaḥ sasutabāndhavaḥ kṣayam nītaḥ
9. These are my two arms, once anointed with sandalwood paste and worthy of reverence, by which Duryodhana, along with his sons and kinsmen, was sent to his destruction.
एताश्चान्याश्च विविधाः शल्यभूता जनाधिपः ।
वृकोदरस्य ता वाचः श्रुत्वा निर्वेदमागमत् ॥१०॥
10. etāścānyāśca vividhāḥ śalyabhūtā janādhipaḥ ,
vṛkodarasya tā vācaḥ śrutvā nirvedamāgamat.
10. etāḥ ca anyāḥ ca vividhāḥ śalyabhūtāḥ janādhipaḥ
vṛkodarasya tāḥ vācaḥ śrutvā nirvedam āgamat
10. vṛkodarasya etāḥ ca anyāḥ ca vividhāḥ śalyabhūtāḥ
tāḥ vācaḥ śrutvā janādhipaḥ nirvedam āgamat
10. Having heard these and various other words of Vṛkodara (Bhīma) that were like piercing darts, the king of men attained profound despondency.
सा च बुद्धिमती देवी कालपर्यायवेदिनी ।
गान्धारी सर्वधर्मज्ञा तान्यलीकानि शुश्रुवे ॥११॥
11. sā ca buddhimatī devī kālaparyāyavedinī ,
gāndhārī sarvadharmajñā tānyalīkāni śuśruve.
11. sā ca buddhimatī devī kālaparyāyavedinī
gāndhārī sarvadharmajñā tāni alīkāni śuśruve
11. sā buddhimatī devī kālaparyāyavedinī gāndhārī
sarvadharmajñā tāni alīkāni śuśruve ca
11. And that intelligent, revered lady who understood the turns of time, Gandhari, knowledgeable in all principles (dharma), heard those falsehoods.
ततः पञ्चदशे वर्षे समतीते नराधिपः ।
राजा निर्वेदमापेदे भीमवाग्बाणपीडितः ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ pañcadaśe varṣe samatīte narādhipaḥ ,
rājā nirvedamāpede bhīmavāgbāṇapīḍitaḥ.

rājā nirvedam āpede bhīmavāgbāṇapīḍitaḥ
12. tataḥ pañcadaśe varṣe samatīte

12. Then, after the fifteenth year had passed, the king, lord of men, fell into a state of profound detachment, tormented by Bhima's arrow-like words.
नान्वबुध्यत तद्राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
श्वेताश्वो वाथ कुन्ती वा द्रौपदी वा यशस्विनी ॥१३॥
13. nānvabudhyata tadrājā kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
śvetāśvo vātha kuntī vā draupadī vā yaśasvinī.
13. na anvabudhyata tat rājā kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
śvetāśvaḥ vā atha kuntī vā draupadī vā yaśasvinī
13. rājā kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ vā śvetāśvaḥ vā atha
kuntī vā yaśasvinī draupadī tat na anvabudhyata
13. Neither that king (Dhritarashtra) understood it, nor Yudhishthira, Kunti's son, nor Arjuna, nor Kunti, nor the glorious Draupadi.
माद्रीपुत्रौ च भीमस्य चित्तज्ञावन्वमोदताम् ।
राज्ञस्तु चित्तं रक्षन्तौ नोचतुः किंचिदप्रियम् ॥१४॥
14. mādrīputrau ca bhīmasya cittajñāvanvamodatām ,
rājñastu cittaṁ rakṣantau nocatuḥ kiṁcidapriyam.
14. mādrīputrau ca bhīmasya cittajñau anvamodatām
rājñaḥ tu cittam rakṣantau na ūcatuḥ kiñcit apriyam
14. mādrīputrau cittajñau bhīmasya ca anvamodatām tu
rājñaḥ cittam rakṣantau kiñcit apriyam na ūcatuḥ
14. And the two sons of Madri, understanding Bhima's thoughts, approved. But, protecting the king's feelings, they spoke nothing disagreeable.
ततः समानयामास धृतराष्ट्रः सुहृज्जनम् ।
बाष्पसंदिग्धमत्यर्थमिदमाह वचो भृशम् ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ samānayāmāsa dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ suhṛjjanam ,
bāṣpasaṁdigdhamatyarthamidamāha vaco bhṛśam.
15. tataḥ samānayāmāsa dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ suhṛjjanam
bāṣpasaṃdigdham atyartham idam āha vacaḥ bhṛśam
15. tataḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ suhṛjjanam samānayāmāsa
atyartham bāṣpasaṃdigdham idam vacaḥ bhṛśam āha
15. Thereafter, Dhritarashtra assembled his well-wishers. Exceedingly choked with tears, he spoke these words with great intensity.
