संजय उवाच ।
हन्त ते संप्रवक्ष्यामि सर्वं प्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् ।
शुश्रूषस्व स्थिरो भूत्वा तव ह्यपनयो महान् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
hanta te saṁpravakṣyāmi sarvaṁ pratyakṣadarśivān ,
śuśrūṣasva sthiro bhūtvā tava hyapanayo mahān.

śuśrūṣasva sthiraḥ bhūtvā tava hi apanayaḥ mahān

1. Sañjaya said: 'Indeed, I will fully explain everything to you, for I have witnessed it directly. Listen attentively, becoming steadfast, for your great transgression (apanaya) is manifest.'
गतोदके सेतुबन्धो यादृक्तादृगयं तव ।
विलापो निष्फलो राजन्मा शुचो भरतर्षभ ॥२॥
2. gatodake setubandho yādṛktādṛgayaṁ tava ,
vilāpo niṣphalo rājanmā śuco bharatarṣabha.
2. gatodake setubandhaḥ yādṛk tādṛk ayam tava
vilāpaḥ niṣphalaḥ rājan mā śucaḥ bharatarṣabha
2. rājan bharatarṣabha tava vilāpaḥ gatodake
setubandhaḥ yādṛk tādṛk ayam niṣphalaḥ mā śucaḥ
2. O King, O best of the Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), your lamentation now is as futile as building a dam after the water has already flowed away. Do not grieve.
अनतिक्रमणीयोऽयं कृतान्तस्याद्भुतो विधिः ।
मा शुचो भरतश्रेष्ठ दिष्टमेतत्पुरातनम् ॥३॥
3. anatikramaṇīyo'yaṁ kṛtāntasyādbhuto vidhiḥ ,
mā śuco bharataśreṣṭha diṣṭametatpurātanam.
3. anatikramaṇīyaḥ ayam kṛtāntasya adbhutaḥ vidhiḥ
mā śucaḥ bharataśreṣṭha diṣṭam etat purātanam
3. bharataśreṣṭha ayam kṛtāntasya adbhutaḥ vidhiḥ
anatikramaṇīyaḥ etat purātanam diṣṭam mā śucaḥ
3. O best of the Bharatas (bharataśreṣṭha), this extraordinary decree of fate (kṛtānta) is insurmountable. Do not grieve, for this is an ancient destiny.
यदि हि त्वं पुरा द्यूतात्कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
निवर्तयेथाः पुत्रांश्च न त्वां व्यसनमाव्रजेत् ॥४॥
4. yadi hi tvaṁ purā dyūtātkuntīputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
nivartayethāḥ putrāṁśca na tvāṁ vyasanamāvrajet.
4. yadi hi tvam purā dyūtāt kuntīputram yudhiṣṭhiram
nivartayethāḥ putrān ca na tvām vyasanam āvrajet
4. hi yadi tvam purā dyūtāt kuntīputram yudhiṣṭhiram
ca putrān nivartayethāḥ na tvām vyasanam āvrajet
4. Indeed, if you had restrained Yudhishthira, Kunti's son, and (your) sons before the game of dice, then this misfortune would not have befallen you.
युद्धकाले पुनः प्राप्ते तदैव भवता यदि ।
निवर्तिताः स्युः संरब्धा न त्वां व्यसनमाव्रजेत् ॥५॥
5. yuddhakāle punaḥ prāpte tadaiva bhavatā yadi ,
nivartitāḥ syuḥ saṁrabdhā na tvāṁ vyasanamāvrajet.
5. yuddhakāle punaḥ prāpte tadā eva bhavatā yadi
nivartitāḥ syuḥ saṃrabdhāḥ na tvām vyasanam āvrajet
5. punaḥ yadi yuddhakāle prāpte tadā eva bhavatā
saṃrabdhāḥ nivartitāḥ syuḥ na tvām vyasanam āvrajet
5. Moreover, if at the very time the war (yuddhakāla) had arrived, those enraged ones had been restrained by you, this misfortune would not have befallen you.
दुर्योधनं चाविधेयं बध्नीतेति पुरा यदि ।
कुरूनचोदयिष्यस्त्वं न त्वां व्यसनमाव्रजेत् ॥६॥
6. duryodhanaṁ cāvidheyaṁ badhnīteti purā yadi ,
kurūnacodayiṣyastvaṁ na tvāṁ vyasanamāvrajet.
6. duryodhanaṃ ca avidheyaṃ badhnīta iti purā yadi
kurūn acodayiṣyaḥ tvam na tvām vyasanam āvrajet
6. yadi tvaṃ purā kurūn duryodhanaṃ ca avidheyaṃ badhnīta iti acodayiṣyaḥ,
na vyasanam tvām āvrajet
6. If you had previously instructed the Kurus to bind this unruly Duryodhana, misfortune would not have befallen you.
तत्ते बुद्धिव्यभीचारमुपलप्स्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ।
पाञ्चाला वृष्णयः सर्वे ये चान्येऽपि महाजनाः ॥७॥
7. tatte buddhivyabhīcāramupalapsyanti pāṇḍavāḥ ,
pāñcālā vṛṣṇayaḥ sarve ye cānye'pi mahājanāḥ.
7. tat te buddhi-vyabhīcāram upalapsyanti pāṇḍavāḥ
pāñcālā vṛṣṇayaḥ sarve ye ca anye api mahājanāḥ
7. pāṇḍavāḥ pāñcālāḥ vṛṣṇayaḥ ca sarve ye anye api
mahājanāḥ te tat buddhi-vyabhīcāram upalapsyanti
7. The Pāṇḍavas, the Pāñcālas, the Vṛṣṇis, and all other great people will realize that error in your judgment.
स कृत्वा पितृकर्म त्वं पुत्रं संस्थाप्य सत्पथे ।
वर्तेथा यदि धर्मेण न त्वां व्यसनमाव्रजेत् ॥८॥
8. sa kṛtvā pitṛkarma tvaṁ putraṁ saṁsthāpya satpathe ,
vartethā yadi dharmeṇa na tvāṁ vyasanamāvrajet.
8. sa kṛtvā pitṛkarma tvam putraṃ saṃsthāpya satpathe
vartethā yadi dharmeṇa na tvām vyasanam āvrajet
8. yadi tvaṃ pitṛkarma kṛtvā putraṃ satpathe saṃsthāpya sa dharmeṇa vartethā,
na vyasanam tvām āvrajet
8. If, having performed your paternal duties (pitṛkarma) and established your son on the right path, you had then lived by righteousness (dharma), misfortune would not have befallen you.
त्वं तु प्राज्ञतमो लोके हित्वा धर्मं सनातनम् ।
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेश्चान्वगा मतम् ॥९॥
9. tvaṁ tu prājñatamo loke hitvā dharmaṁ sanātanam ,
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneścānvagā matam.
9. tvam tu prājñatamaḥ loke hitvā dharmaṃ sanātanam
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ ca anvaga matam
9. tu tvam loke prājñatamaḥ sanātanam dharmaṃ hitvā
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ ca matam anvaga
9. But you, though the wisest in the world, abandoned eternal (sanātana) righteousness (dharma) and followed the counsel of Duryodhana, Karṇa, and Śakuni.
तत्ते विलपितं सर्वं मया राजन्निशामितम् ।
अर्थे निविशमानस्य विषमिश्रं यथा मधु ॥१०॥
10. tatte vilapitaṁ sarvaṁ mayā rājanniśāmitam ,
arthe niviśamānasya viṣamiśraṁ yathā madhu.
10. tat te vilapitam sarvam mayā rājan niśāmitam
arthe niviśamānasya viṣamiśram yathā madhu
10. rājan mayā te tat sarvam vilapitam niśāmitam
yathā arthe niviśamānasya madhu viṣamiśram
10. O King, I have heard all your lamentation. It is like honey mixed with poison for one who is absorbed in the pursuit of gain.
न तथा मन्यते कृष्णो राजानं पाण्डवं पुरा ।
न भीष्मं नैव च द्रोणं यथा त्वां मन्यते नृप ॥११॥
11. na tathā manyate kṛṣṇo rājānaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ purā ,
na bhīṣmaṁ naiva ca droṇaṁ yathā tvāṁ manyate nṛpa.
11. na tathā manyate kṛṣṇaḥ rājānam pāṇḍavam purā na
bhīṣmam na eva ca droṇam yathā tvām manyate nṛpa
11. nṛpa kṛṣṇaḥ purā pāṇḍavam rājānam tathā na manyate
bhīṣmam ca droṇam eva na yathā tvām manyate
11. Kṛṣṇa no longer regards the Pāṇḍava king (Yudhiṣṭhira) as he once did. He certainly does not regard Bhīṣma or Droṇa in the same way that he regards you, O King.
व्यजानत यदा तु त्वां राजधर्मादधश्च्युतम् ।
तदा प्रभृति कृष्णस्त्वां न तथा बहु मन्यते ॥१२॥
12. vyajānata yadā tu tvāṁ rājadharmādadhaścyutam ,
tadā prabhṛti kṛṣṇastvāṁ na tathā bahu manyate.
12. vyajānata yadā tu tvām rājadharmāt adhaḥ cyutam
tadā prabhṛti kṛṣṇaḥ tvām na tathā bahu manyate
12. yadā tu kṛṣṇaḥ tvām rājadharmāt adhaḥ cyutam vyajānata
tadā prabhṛti kṛṣṇaḥ tvām tathā bahu na manyate
12. But when Kṛṣṇa realized that you had fallen from the royal duties (dharma), from that time onwards, he no longer regards you with much respect.
परुषाण्युच्यमानांश्च यथा पार्थानुपेक्षसे ।
तस्यानुबन्धः प्राप्तस्त्वां पुत्राणां राज्यकामुकम् ॥१३॥
13. paruṣāṇyucyamānāṁśca yathā pārthānupekṣase ,
tasyānubandhaḥ prāptastvāṁ putrāṇāṁ rājyakāmukam.
13. paruṣāṇi ucyamānān ca yathā pārthān upekṣase tasya
anubandhaḥ prāptaḥ tvām putrāṇām rājyakāmukam
13. yathā ca paruṣāṇi ucyamānān pārthān upekṣase tasya
anubandhaḥ putrāṇām rājyakāmukam tvām prāptaḥ
13. Just as you disregard the Pāṇḍavas, even when harsh words are spoken (to them), the consequence of that has now befallen you, who are desirous of the kingdom for your sons.
पितृपैतामहं राज्यमपवृत्तं तदानघ ।
अथ पार्थैर्जितां कृत्स्नां पृथिवीं प्रत्यपद्यथाः ॥१४॥
14. pitṛpaitāmahaṁ rājyamapavṛttaṁ tadānagha ,
atha pārthairjitāṁ kṛtsnāṁ pṛthivīṁ pratyapadyathāḥ.
14. pitṛpaitāmaham rājyam apavṛttam tadā anagha atha
pārthaiḥ jitām kṛtsnām pṛthivīm pratyapadyathāḥ
14. anagha tadā pitṛpaitāmaham rājyam apavṛttam atha
pārthaiḥ jitām kṛtsnām pṛthivīm pratyapadyathāḥ
14. O sinless one (anagha), your ancestral kingdom was lost at that time. Subsequently, you regained the entire earth, which had been conquered by the Pārthas.
पाण्डुनावर्जितं राज्यं कौरवाणां यशस्तथा ।
ततश्चाभ्यधिकं भूयः पाण्डवैर्धर्मचारिभिः ॥१५॥
15. pāṇḍunāvarjitaṁ rājyaṁ kauravāṇāṁ yaśastathā ,
tataścābhyadhikaṁ bhūyaḥ pāṇḍavairdharmacāribhiḥ.
15. pāṇḍunā āvarjitam rājyam kauravāṇām yaśaḥ tathā
tataḥ ca abhyadhikam bhūyaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ dharmacāribhiḥ
15. pāṇḍunā āvarjitam rājyam tathā kauravāṇām yaśaḥ ca
tataḥ bhūyaḥ abhyadhikam pāṇḍavaiḥ dharmacāribhiḥ
15. The kingdom acquired by Pāṇḍu, and similarly the fame of the Kauravas, and even more than that, something much greater (was attained) again by the Pāṇḍavas, who lived righteously (dharma-cārin).
तेषां तत्तादृशं कर्म त्वामासाद्य सुनिष्फलम् ।
यत्पित्र्याद्भ्रंशिता राज्यात्त्वयेहामिषगृद्धिना ॥१६॥
16. teṣāṁ tattādṛśaṁ karma tvāmāsādya suniṣphalam ,
yatpitryādbhraṁśitā rājyāttvayehāmiṣagṛddhinā.
16. teṣām tat tādṛśam karma tvām āsādya suniṣphalam yat
pitryāt bhraṃśitāḥ rājyāt tvayā iha āmiṣagṛddhinā
16. tvām āsādya teṣām tat tādṛśam karma suniṣphalam yat
iha tvayā āmiṣagṛddhinā pitryāt rājyāt bhraṃśitāḥ
16. All those deeds (karma) of theirs became entirely fruitless when they encountered you, because they were displaced from their ancestral kingdom here by you, who are greedy for worldly possessions.
यत्पुनर्युद्धकाले त्वं पुत्रान्गर्हयसे नृप ।
बहुधा व्याहरन्दोषान्न तदद्योपपद्यते ॥१७॥
17. yatpunaryuddhakāle tvaṁ putrāngarhayase nṛpa ,
bahudhā vyāharandoṣānna tadadyopapadyate.
17. yat punaḥ yuddhakāle tvam putrān garhayase nṛpa
bahudhā vyāharan doṣān na tat adya upapadyate
17. nṛpa yat tvam punaḥ yuddhakāle bahudhā doṣān
vyāharan putrān garhayase tat adya na upapadyate
17. O king (nṛpa), it is not fitting now that you, in the time of war, again blame your sons, enumerating their many faults.
न हि रक्षन्ति राजानो युध्यन्तो जीवितं रणे ।
चमूं विगाह्य पार्थानां युध्यन्ते क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥१८॥
18. na hi rakṣanti rājāno yudhyanto jīvitaṁ raṇe ,
camūṁ vigāhya pārthānāṁ yudhyante kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ.
18. na hi rakṣanti rājānaḥ yudhyantaḥ jīvitam raṇe |
camūm vigāhya pārthānām yudhyante kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ
18. na hi rājānaḥ yudhyantaḥ raṇe jīvitam rakṣanti
kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ pārthānām camūm vigāhya yudhyante
18. Kings fighting in battle certainly do not protect their own lives. These foremost warriors (kṣatriya) fight, having plunged deep into the Pārthas' army.
यां तु कृष्णार्जुनौ सेनां यां सात्यकिवृकोदरौ ।
रक्षेरन्को नु तां युध्येच्चमूमन्यत्र कौरवैः ॥१९॥
19. yāṁ tu kṛṣṇārjunau senāṁ yāṁ sātyakivṛkodarau ,
rakṣeranko nu tāṁ yudhyeccamūmanyatra kauravaiḥ.
19. yām tu kṛṣṇārjunau senām yām sātyakivṛkodarau |
rakṣeran kaḥ nu tām yudhyet camūm anyatra kauravaiḥ
19. tu kṛṣṇārjunau yām senām yām sātyakivṛkodarau rakṣeran,
tām camūm kaḥ nu kauravaiḥ anyatra yudhyet
19. Indeed, who, apart from the Kauravas, would fight that army which Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna protect, and which Sātyaki and Vṛkodara (Bhīma) protect?
येषां योद्धा गुडाकेशो येषां मन्त्री जनार्दनः ।
येषां च सात्यकिर्गोप्ता येषां गोप्ता वृकोदरः ॥२०॥
20. yeṣāṁ yoddhā guḍākeśo yeṣāṁ mantrī janārdanaḥ ,
yeṣāṁ ca sātyakirgoptā yeṣāṁ goptā vṛkodaraḥ.
20. yeṣām yodhā guḍākeśaḥ yeṣām mantrī janārdanaḥ
| yeṣām ca sātyakiḥ goptā yeṣām goptā vṛkodaraḥ
20. yeṣām yodhā guḍākeśaḥ yeṣām mantrī janārdanaḥ
ca yeṣām goptā sātyakiḥ yeṣām goptā vṛkodaraḥ
20. For whom Guḍākeśa (Arjuna) is the warrior, for whom Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) is the advisor; and for whom Sātyaki is the protector, and for whom Vṛkodara (Bhīma) is the protector.
को हि तान्विषहेद्योद्धुं मर्त्यधर्मा धनुर्धरः ।
अन्यत्र कौरवेयेभ्यो ये वा तेषां पदानुगाः ॥२१॥
21. ko hi tānviṣahedyoddhuṁ martyadharmā dhanurdharaḥ ,
anyatra kauraveyebhyo ye vā teṣāṁ padānugāḥ.
21. kaḥ hi tān viṣahet yoddhum martyadharmā dhanurdharaḥ
| anyatra kauraveyebhyaḥ ye vā teṣām padānugāḥ
21. hi kaḥ martyadharmā dhanurdharaḥ tān yoddhum
viṣahet anyatra kauraveyebhyaḥ vā ye teṣām padānugāḥ
21. Indeed, what mortal archer could endure fighting against them, other than the Kauravas or their followers?
यावत्तु शक्यते कर्तुमनुरक्तैर्जनाधिपैः ।
क्षत्रधर्मरतैः शूरैस्तावत्कुर्वन्ति कौरवाः ॥२२॥
22. yāvattu śakyate kartumanuraktairjanādhipaiḥ ,
kṣatradharmarataiḥ śūraistāvatkurvanti kauravāḥ.
22. yāvat tu śakyate kartum anuraktaiḥ janādhipaiḥ
kṣatradharmarataiḥ śūraiḥ tāvat kurvanti kauravāḥ
22. kauravāḥ anuraktaiḥ kṣatradharmarataiḥ śūraiḥ
janādhipaiḥ yāvat kartum śakyate tāvat kurvanti tu
22. The Kauravas will accomplish as much as can be done by those loyal kings who are brave and devoted to the warrior's intrinsic nature (kṣatra-dharma).
यथा तु पुरुषव्याघ्रैर्युद्धं परमसङ्कटम् ।
कुरूणां पाण्डवैः सार्धं तत्सर्वं शृणु तत्त्वतः ॥२३॥
23. yathā tu puruṣavyāghrairyuddhaṁ paramasaṅkaṭam ,
kurūṇāṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ tatsarvaṁ śṛṇu tattvataḥ.
23. yathā tu puruṣavyāghraiḥ yuddham paramasaṅkaṭam
kurūṇām pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham tat sarvam śṛṇu tattvataḥ
23. tu puruṣavyāghraiḥ kurūṇām pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham yathā
paramasaṅkaṭam yuddham (abhūt) tat sarvam tattvataḥ śṛṇu
23. Now, listen to me in detail about how that exceedingly dangerous battle between the Kurus and the Pandavas, fought by those tiger-like men, truly unfolded.
