शल्य उवाच ।
ऋषयोऽथाब्रुवन्सर्वे देवाश्च त्रिदशेश्वराः ।
अयं वै नहुषः श्रीमान्देवराज्येऽभिषिच्यताम् ।
ते गत्वाथाब्रुवन्सर्वे राजा नो भव पार्थिव ॥१॥
1. śalya uvāca ,
ṛṣayo'thābruvansarve devāśca tridaśeśvarāḥ ,
ayaṁ vai nahuṣaḥ śrīmāndevarājye'bhiṣicyatām ,
te gatvāthābruvansarve rājā no bhava pārthiva.
1. śalyaḥ uvāca ṛṣayaḥ atha abruvan sarve
devāḥ ca tridaśeśvarāḥ ayam vai nahuṣaḥ
śrīmān devarājye abhiṣicyatām te gatvā atha
abruvan sarve rājā naḥ bhava pārthiva
1. Śalya said: "Then all the sages and the lords of the gods declared, 'Indeed, let this illustrious Nahuṣa be consecrated in the kingdom of the gods.' So, having approached him, all of them said, 'O earthly ruler, be our king.'"
स तानुवाच नहुषो देवानृषिगणांस्तथा ।
पितृभिः सहितान्राजन्परीप्सन्हितमात्मनः ॥२॥
2. sa tānuvāca nahuṣo devānṛṣigaṇāṁstathā ,
pitṛbhiḥ sahitānrājanparīpsanhitamātmanaḥ.
2. saḥ tān uvāca nahuṣaḥ devān ṛṣigaṇān tathā
pitṛbhiḥ sahitān rājan parīpsan hitam ātmanaḥ
2. O King, Nahuṣa, desiring his own welfare (ātman), then addressed them - the gods, the hosts of sages, and also the ancestors (pitṛ) who were assembled there.
दुर्बलोऽहं न मे शक्तिर्भवतां परिपालने ।
बलवाञ्जायते राजा बलं शक्रे हि नित्यदा ॥३॥
3. durbalo'haṁ na me śaktirbhavatāṁ paripālane ,
balavāñjāyate rājā balaṁ śakre hi nityadā.
3. durbalaḥ aham na me śaktiḥ bhavatām paripālane
balavān jāyate rājā balam śakre hi nityadā
3. "I am weak; I do not possess the strength (śakti) to protect you. A king must be mighty, and indeed, strength eternally resides in Śakra (Indra)."
तमब्रुवन्पुनः सर्वे देवाः सर्षिपुरोगमाः ।
अस्माकं तपसा युक्तः पाहि राज्यं त्रिविष्टपे ॥४॥
4. tamabruvanpunaḥ sarve devāḥ sarṣipurogamāḥ ,
asmākaṁ tapasā yuktaḥ pāhi rājyaṁ triviṣṭape.
4. tam abruvan punaḥ sarve devāḥ sa-ṛṣipurōgamāḥ
asmākam tapasā yuktaḥ pāhi rājyam triviṣṭape
4. Again, all the gods, led by the sages, said to him, "Endowed with the power of our asceticism (tapas), protect the kingdom in heaven (triviṣṭapa)."
परस्परभयं घोरमस्माकं हि न संशयः ।
अभिषिच्यस्व राजेन्द्र भव राजा त्रिविष्टपे ॥५॥
5. parasparabhayaṁ ghoramasmākaṁ hi na saṁśayaḥ ,
abhiṣicyasva rājendra bhava rājā triviṣṭape.
5. parasparabhayam ghoram asmākam hi na saṃśayaḥ
abhiṣicyasva rājendra bhava rājā triviṣṭape
5. Indeed, there is no doubt about the terrible mutual fear that exists among us. O king of kings, consecrate yourself and become the ruler of heaven.
देवदानवयक्षाणामृषीणां रक्षसां तथा ।
पितृगन्धर्वभूतानां चक्षुर्विषयवर्तिनाम् ।
तेज आदास्यसे पश्यन्बलवांश्च भविष्यसि ॥६॥
6. devadānavayakṣāṇāmṛṣīṇāṁ rakṣasāṁ tathā ,
pitṛgandharvabhūtānāṁ cakṣurviṣayavartinām ,
teja ādāsyase paśyanbalavāṁśca bhaviṣyasi.
6. devadānavayakṣāṇām ṛṣīṇām rakṣasām
tathā pitṛgandharvabhūtānām
cakṣuḥviṣayavartinām tejaḥ
ādāsyase paśyan balavān ca bhaviṣyasi
6. You will take away the glory of the gods, dānavas, yakṣas, sages (ṛṣis), rākṣasas, and also of the ancestors (pitṛs), gandharvas, and all beings within the range of your vision. By seeing them, you will become powerful.
धर्मं पुरस्कृत्य सदा सर्वलोकाधिपो भव ।
ब्रह्मर्षींश्चापि देवांश्च गोपायस्व त्रिविष्टपे ॥७॥
7. dharmaṁ puraskṛtya sadā sarvalokādhipo bhava ,
brahmarṣīṁścāpi devāṁśca gopāyasva triviṣṭape.
7. dharmam puraskṛtya sadā sarvalokādhipaḥ bhava
brahmarṣīn ca api devān ca gopāyasva triviṣṭape
7. Always uphold the natural law (dharma) and become the lord of all worlds. Protect the brahmin sages and the gods in heaven.
सुदुर्लभं वरं लब्ध्वा प्राप्य राज्यं त्रिविष्टपे ।
धर्मात्मा सततं भूत्वा कामात्मा समपद्यत ॥८॥
8. sudurlabhaṁ varaṁ labdhvā prāpya rājyaṁ triviṣṭape ,
dharmātmā satataṁ bhūtvā kāmātmā samapadyata.
8. sudurlabham varam labdhvā prāpya rājyam triviṣṭape
dharmātmā satatam bhūtvā kāmātmā samapadyata
8. After obtaining a very rare boon and acquiring a kingdom in heaven, he, who had always embodied righteousness (dharmātmā), then became filled with desire (kāmātmā).
देवोद्यानेषु सर्वेषु नन्दनोपवनेषु च ।
कैलासे हिमवत्पृष्ठे मन्दरे श्वेतपर्वते ।
सह्ये महेन्द्रे मलये समुद्रेषु सरित्सु च ॥९॥
9. devodyāneṣu sarveṣu nandanopavaneṣu ca ,
kailāse himavatpṛṣṭhe mandare śvetaparvate ,
sahye mahendre malaye samudreṣu saritsu ca.
9. devodyāneṣu sarveṣu nandanopavaneṣu
ca kailāse himavatpṛṣṭhe
mandare śvetaparvate sahye mahendre
malaye samudreṣu saritsu ca
9. In all divine gardens (devodyāna), including the Nandana groves, on Kailāsa, on the slopes of the Himavat, on Mandara, on Śveta mountain, on Sahya, Mahendra, Malaya, in the oceans, and in the rivers.
अप्सरोभिः परिवृतो देवकन्यासमावृतः ।
नहुषो देवराजः सन्क्रीडन्बहुविधं तदा ॥१०॥
10. apsarobhiḥ parivṛto devakanyāsamāvṛtaḥ ,
nahuṣo devarājaḥ sankrīḍanbahuvidhaṁ tadā.
10. apsarobhiḥ parivṛtaḥ devakanyāsamāvṛtaḥ
nahuṣaḥ devarājaḥ san krīḍan bahuvidham tadā
10. Surrounded by Apsarases and enveloped by celestial maidens, Nahuṣa, as the king of the gods, then played in many ways.
शृण्वन्दिव्या बहुविधाः कथाः श्रुतिमनोहराः ।
वादित्राणि च सर्वाणि गीतं च मधुरस्वरम् ॥११॥
11. śṛṇvandivyā bahuvidhāḥ kathāḥ śrutimanoharāḥ ,
vāditrāṇi ca sarvāṇi gītaṁ ca madhurasvaram.
11. śṛṇvan divyāḥ bahuvidhāḥ kathāḥ śrutimanoharāḥ
vāditrāṇi ca sarvāṇi gītam ca madhurasvaram
11. Listening to many various divine stories, delightful to the ear, and all the musical instruments, and melodious songs.
विश्वावसुर्नारदश्च गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणाः ।
ऋतवः षट्च देवेन्द्रं मूर्तिमन्त उपस्थिताः ।
मारुतः सुरभिर्वाति मनोज्ञः सुखशीतलः ॥१२॥
12. viśvāvasurnāradaśca gandharvāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ ,
ṛtavaḥ ṣaṭca devendraṁ mūrtimanta upasthitāḥ ,
mārutaḥ surabhirvāti manojñaḥ sukhaśītalaḥ.
12. viśvāvasuḥ nāradaḥ ca gandharvāpsarasām
gaṇāḥ ṛtavaḥ ṣaṭ ca devendram
mūrtimantaḥ upasthitāḥ mārutaḥ
surabhiḥ vāti manojñaḥ sukhaśītalaḥ
12. Viśvāvasu, Nārada, and groups of Gandharvas and Apsarases, as well as the six seasons in embodied forms, were present before the lord of the gods (devendra). A pleasant, comfortably cool breeze (māruta) blew.
एवं हि क्रीडतस्तस्य नहुषस्य महात्मनः ।
संप्राप्ता दर्शनं देवी शक्रस्य महिषी प्रिया ॥१३॥
13. evaṁ hi krīḍatastasya nahuṣasya mahātmanaḥ ,
saṁprāptā darśanaṁ devī śakrasya mahiṣī priyā.
13. evam hi krīḍataḥ tasya nahuṣasya mahātmanaḥ
samprāptā darśanam devī śakrasya mahiṣī priyā
13. While that great-souled Nahuṣa was thus sporting, Śakra's dear queen, the goddess, came into his view.
स तां संदृश्य दुष्टात्मा प्राह सर्वान्सभासदः ।
इन्द्रस्य महिषी देवी कस्मान्मां नोपतिष्ठति ॥१४॥
14. sa tāṁ saṁdṛśya duṣṭātmā prāha sarvānsabhāsadaḥ ,
indrasya mahiṣī devī kasmānmāṁ nopatiṣṭhati.
14. sa tām sandṛśya duṣṭātmā prāha sarvān sabhāsadaḥ
indrasya mahiṣī devī kasmāt mām na upatiṣṭhati
14. Upon seeing her, the evil-minded Nahuṣa asked all the assembly members, "Why does the goddess, Indra's queen, not come to me?"
अहमिन्द्रोऽस्मि देवानां लोकानां च तथेश्वरः ।
आगच्छतु शची मह्यं क्षिप्रमद्य निवेशनम् ॥१५॥
15. ahamindro'smi devānāṁ lokānāṁ ca tatheśvaraḥ ,
āgacchatu śacī mahyaṁ kṣipramadya niveśanam.
15. aham indraḥ asmi devānām lokānām ca tathā īśvaraḥ
āgacchatu śacī mahyam kṣipram adya niveśanam
15. I am Indra, and indeed the lord of both gods and worlds. Let Śacī come to my dwelling quickly today.
तच्छ्रुत्वा दुर्मना देवी बृहस्पतिमुवाच ह ।
रक्ष मां नहुषाद्ब्रह्मंस्तवास्मि शरणं गता ॥१६॥
16. tacchrutvā durmanā devī bṛhaspatimuvāca ha ,
rakṣa māṁ nahuṣādbrahmaṁstavāsmi śaraṇaṁ gatā.
16. tat śrutvā durmanā devī bṛhaspatim uvāca ha
rakṣa mām nahuṣāt brahman tava asmi śaraṇam gatā
16. Hearing that, the distressed goddess spoke to Bṛhaspati, "O Brāhmaṇa, protect me from Nahuṣa! I have sought refuge in you."
सर्वलक्षणसंपन्नां ब्रह्मंस्त्वं मां प्रभाषसे ।
देवराजस्य दयितामत्यन्तसुखभागिनीम् ॥१७॥
17. sarvalakṣaṇasaṁpannāṁ brahmaṁstvaṁ māṁ prabhāṣase ,
devarājasya dayitāmatyantasukhabhāginīm.
17. sarvalakṣaṇasaṃpannām brahman tvam mām prabhāṣase
devarājasya dayitām atyantasukhabhāginīm
17. You address me, O Brahmin, as one endowed with all auspicious marks, the beloved of the king of gods, and one who enjoys great happiness.
अवैधव्येन संयुक्तामेकपत्नीं पतिव्रताम् ।
उक्तवानसि मां पूर्वमृतां तां कुरु वै गिरम् ॥१८॥
18. avaidhavyena saṁyuktāmekapatnīṁ pativratām ,
uktavānasi māṁ pūrvamṛtāṁ tāṁ kuru vai giram.
18. avaidhavyen saṃyuktām ekapatnīm pativratām
uktavān asi mām pūrvam ṛtām tām kuru vai giram
18. You previously spoke of me as one endowed with perpetual married bliss (avaidhavya), a wife devoted to her one husband (ekapatnī), and steadfast in her fidelity (pativratā). Now, make that word of yours true.
नोक्तपूर्वं च भगवन्मृषा ते किंचिदीश्वर ।
तस्मादेतद्भवेत्सत्यं त्वयोक्तं द्विजसत्तम ॥१९॥
19. noktapūrvaṁ ca bhagavanmṛṣā te kiṁcidīśvara ,
tasmādetadbhavetsatyaṁ tvayoktaṁ dvijasattama.
19. na uktapūrvam ca bhagavan mṛṣā te kiñcit īśvara
tasmāt etat bhavet satyam tvayā uktam dvijasattama
19. And, O Lord (bhagavan), nothing you have previously said, O master (īśvara), has ever been false. Therefore, what you have spoken, O best of Brahmins (dvijasattama), must become true.
बृहस्पतिरथोवाच इन्द्राणीं भयमोहिताम् ।
यदुक्तासि मया देवि सत्यं तद्भविता ध्रुवम् ॥२०॥
20. bṛhaspatirathovāca indrāṇīṁ bhayamohitām ,
yaduktāsi mayā devi satyaṁ tadbhavitā dhruvam.
20. bṛhaspatiḥ atha uvāca indrāṇīm bhayamohitām yat
uktā asi mayā devi satyam tad bhavitā dhruvam
20. Bṛhaspati then said to Indrāṇī, who was bewildered by fear: 'O Goddess, whatever I have told you, that will certainly be true.'
द्रक्ष्यसे देवराजानमिन्द्रं शीघ्रमिहागतम् ।
न भेतव्यं च नहुषात्सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ।
समानयिष्ये शक्रेण नचिराद्भवतीमहम् ॥२१॥
21. drakṣyase devarājānamindraṁ śīghramihāgatam ,
na bhetavyaṁ ca nahuṣātsatyametadbravīmi te ,
samānayiṣye śakreṇa nacirādbhavatīmaham.
21. drakṣyase devarājānam indram śīghram
iha āgatam na bhetavyam ca nahuṣāt
satyam etat bravīmi te samānayiṣye
śakreṇa na cirāt bhavatīm aham
21. You will soon see Indra, the king of the gods, arrived here. You should not be afraid of Nahuṣa; I tell you this truth. I will reunite you with Indra (Śakra) without delay.
अथ शुश्राव नहुष इन्द्राणीं शरणं गताम् ।
बृहस्पतेरङ्गिरसश्चुक्रोध स नृपस्तदा ॥२२॥
22. atha śuśrāva nahuṣa indrāṇīṁ śaraṇaṁ gatām ,
bṛhaspateraṅgirasaścukrodha sa nṛpastadā.
22. atha śuśrāva nahuṣaḥ indrāṇīm śaraṇam gatām
bṛhaspateḥ aṅgirasaḥ cukrodha sa nṛpaḥ tadā
22. Then Nahuṣa heard that Indrāṇī had sought refuge with Bṛhaspati, the son of Aṅgiras. At that, the king (Nahuṣa) became angry.
