जनमेजय उवाच ।
हते दुर्योधने चैव हते सैन्ये च सर्वशः ।
धृतराष्ट्रो महाराजः श्रुत्वा किमकरोन्मुने ॥१॥

1. Janamejaya said: 'O Sage (mune), when Duryodhana was killed and the army was completely destroyed, what did King Dhṛtarāṣṭra do after hearing (this)?'
तथैव कौरवो राजा धर्मपुत्रो महामनाः ।
कृपप्रभृतयश्चैव किमकुर्वत ते त्रयः ॥२॥
2. tathaiva kauravo rājā dharmaputro mahāmanāḥ ,
kṛpaprabhṛtayaścaiva kimakurvata te trayaḥ.

2. Similarly, what did the great-minded Kuru king (Yudhiṣṭhira), the son of Dharma (dharma), do? And what did those three, Kṛpa and others (Aśvatthāman and Kṛtavarman), do?
अश्वत्थाम्नः श्रुतं कर्म शापश्चान्योन्यकारितः ।
वृत्तान्तमुत्तरं ब्रूहि यदभाषत संजयः ॥३॥
3. aśvatthāmnaḥ śrutaṁ karma śāpaścānyonyakāritaḥ ,
vṛttāntamuttaraṁ brūhi yadabhāṣata saṁjayaḥ.

3. I have heard about Ashvatthama's deed (karma) and the reciprocal curse. Please narrate the subsequent events, as you, Sañjaya, recounted them.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
हते पुत्रशते दीनं छिन्नशाखमिव द्रुमम् ।
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तं धृतराष्ट्रं महीपतिम् ॥४॥
4. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
hate putraśate dīnaṁ chinnaśākhamiva drumam ,
putraśokābhisaṁtaptaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ mahīpatim.

4. Vaiśampāyana said: (He approached) King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who was miserable after his hundred sons had been killed, like a tree with its branches severed, and completely tormented by grief for his sons.
ध्यानमूकत्वमापन्नं चिन्तया समभिप्लुतम् ।
अभिगम्य महाप्राज्ञः संजयो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. dhyānamūkatvamāpannaṁ cintayā samabhiplutam ,
abhigamya mahāprājñaḥ saṁjayo vākyamabravīt.
5. dhyāna-mūkatvam āpannam cintayā sam-abhi-plutam
abhigamya mahāprājñaḥ sañjayaḥ vākyam abravīt

5. Having fallen into a silent stupor of contemplation (dhyāna) and overwhelmed by anxiety, the highly intelligent Sañjaya approached (King Dhṛtarāṣṭra) and spoke these words.
किं शोचसि महाराज नास्ति शोके सहायता ।
अक्षौहिण्यो हताश्चाष्टौ दश चैव विशां पते ।
निर्जनेयं वसुमती शून्या संप्रति केवला ॥६॥
6. kiṁ śocasi mahārāja nāsti śoke sahāyatā ,
akṣauhiṇyo hatāścāṣṭau daśa caiva viśāṁ pate ,
nirjaneyaṁ vasumatī śūnyā saṁprati kevalā.
6. kim śocasi mahārāja na asti śoke
sahāyatā akṣauhiṇyaḥ hatāḥ ca aṣṭau
daśa ca eva viśām pate nirjanā
iyam vasumatī śūnyā samprati kevalā
6. mahārāja kim śocasi? śoke sahāyatā na asti.
viśām pate,
aṣṭau ca daśa ca akṣauhiṇyaḥ hatāḥ eva.
iyam vasumatī samprati nirjanā śūnyā kevalā.
6. Why do you grieve, great king? There is no help in sorrow. O lord of men, eighteen Akṣauhiṇī armies have been slain. This earth is now deserted, empty, and solitary.
नानादिग्भ्यः समागम्य नानादेश्या नराधिपाः ।
सहितास्तव पुत्रेण सर्वे वै निधनं गताः ॥७॥
7. nānādigbhyaḥ samāgamya nānādeśyā narādhipāḥ ,
sahitāstava putreṇa sarve vai nidhanaṁ gatāḥ.
7. nānādigbhyaḥ samāgamya nānādeśyāḥ narādhipāḥ
sahitāḥ tava putreṇa sarve vai nidhanam gatāḥ
7. nānādigbhyaḥ samāgamya,
nānādeśyāḥ narādhipāḥ tava putreṇa sahitāḥ sarve vai nidhanam gatāḥ.
7. Having assembled from various directions, kings from different lands, together with your son, all indeed met their end.
पितॄणां पुत्रपौत्राणां ज्ञातीनां सुहृदां तथा ।
गुरूणां चानुपूर्व्येण प्रेतकार्याणि कारय ॥८॥
8. pitṝṇāṁ putrapautrāṇāṁ jñātīnāṁ suhṛdāṁ tathā ,
gurūṇāṁ cānupūrvyeṇa pretakāryāṇi kāraya.
8. pitṝṇām putrapautrāṇām jñātīnām suhṛdām tathā
gurūṇām ca ānupūrvyeṇa pretakāryāṇi kāraya
8. tathā pitṝṇām putrapautrāṇām jñātīnām suhṛdām ca gurūṇām ānupūrvyeṇa pretakāryāṇi kāraya.
8. Perform the funeral rites for fathers, sons, grandsons, relatives, friends, and also for teachers, in due order.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा करुणं वाक्यं पुत्रपौत्रवधार्दितः ।
पपात भुवि दुर्धर्षो वाताहत इव द्रुमः ॥९॥
9. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tacchrutvā karuṇaṁ vākyaṁ putrapautravadhārditaḥ ,
papāta bhuvi durdharṣo vātāhata iva drumaḥ.
9. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca tat śrutvā karuṇam vākyam putrapautravadhārditaḥ
papāta bhuvi durdharṣaḥ vāta āhataḥ iva drumaḥ
9. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca.
tat karuṇam vākyam śrutvā putrapautravadhārditaḥ durdharṣaḥ (saḥ) bhuvi papāta,
vāta-āhataḥ drumaḥ iva.
9. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard that pathetic statement, the unconquerable one, afflicted by the killing of his sons and grandsons, fell to the ground like a tree struck by the wind.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
हतपुत्रो हतामात्यो हतसर्वसुहृज्जनः ।
दुःखं नूनं भविष्यामि विचरन्पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥१०॥
10. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
hataputro hatāmātyo hatasarvasuhṛjjanaḥ ,
duḥkhaṁ nūnaṁ bhaviṣyāmi vicaranpṛthivīmimām.
10. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca hataputraḥ hatāmātyaḥ hatasarvasuhṛjjanaḥ
duḥkham nūnam bhaviṣyāmi vicaran pṛthivīm imām
10. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca hataputraḥ hatāmātyaḥ hatasarvasuhṛjjanaḥ
imām pṛthivīm vicaran nūnam duḥkham bhaviṣyāmi
10. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "With my sons killed, my ministers killed, and all my well-wishers killed, I will surely wander this earth in sorrow."
किं नु बन्धुविहीनस्य जीवितेन ममाद्य वै ।
लूनपक्षस्य इव मे जराजीर्णस्य पक्षिणः ॥११॥
11. kiṁ nu bandhuvihīnasya jīvitena mamādya vai ,
lūnapakṣasya iva me jarājīrṇasya pakṣiṇaḥ.
11. kim nu bandhuvīhīnasya jīvitena mama adya
vai lūnapakṣasya iva me jarājīrṇasya pakṣiṇaḥ
11. bandhuvīhīnasya jarājīrṇasya lūnapakṣasya
pakṣiṇaḥ iva me adya jīvitena kim nu vai
11. What use is life to me today, now that I am deprived of my kinsmen? I am like a bird with clipped wings, worn out by old age.
हृतराज्यो हतसुहृद्धतचक्षुश्च वै तथा ।
न भ्राजिष्ये महाप्राज्ञ क्षीणरश्मिरिवांशुमान् ॥१२॥
12. hṛtarājyo hatasuhṛddhatacakṣuśca vai tathā ,
na bhrājiṣye mahāprājña kṣīṇaraśmirivāṁśumān.
12. hṛtarājyaḥ hatasuhṛt hṛtacakṣuḥ ca vai tathā na
bhrājiṣye mahāprājña kṣīṇaraśmiḥ iva aṃśumān
12. mahāprājña hṛtarājyaḥ hatasuhṛt hṛtacakṣuḥ ca
tathā vai na kṣīṇaraśmiḥ aṃśumān iva bhrājiṣye
12. My kingdom snatched away, my friends killed, and my eyes blinded - indeed, I shall not shine, O greatly wise one, like the sun with diminished rays.
न कृतं सुहृदां वाक्यं जामदग्न्यस्य जल्पतः ।
नारदस्य च देवर्षेः कृष्णद्वैपायनस्य च ॥१३॥
13. na kṛtaṁ suhṛdāṁ vākyaṁ jāmadagnyasya jalpataḥ ,
nāradasya ca devarṣeḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanasya ca.
13. na kṛtam suhṛdām vākyam jāmadagnyasya jalpataḥ
nāradasya ca devarṣeḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanasya ca
13. suhṛdām jāmadagnyasya jalpataḥ nāradasya devarṣeḥ
ca kṛṣṇadvaipāyanasya ca vākyam na kṛtam
13. The words of my well-wishers were not heeded - neither those spoken by Jamadagni's son (Paraśurāma), nor by the divine sage Nārada, nor by Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa).
सभामध्ये तु कृष्णेन यच्छ्रेयोऽभिहितं मम ।
अलं वैरेण ते राजन्पुत्रः संगृह्यतामिति ॥१४॥
14. sabhāmadhye tu kṛṣṇena yacchreyo'bhihitaṁ mama ,
alaṁ vaireṇa te rājanputraḥ saṁgṛhyatāmiti.
14. sabhāmadhye tu kṛṣṇena yat śreyaḥ abhihitam mama
alam vaireṇa te rājan putraḥ saṃgṛhyatām iti
14. rājan kṛṣṇena sabhāmadhye yat śreyaḥ mama abhihitam,
te vaireṇa alam,
putraḥ saṃgṛhyatām iti
14. In the assembly, Krishna declared to me what was best: 'Enough of this enmity for you, O King; let your son be embraced!'
तच्च वाक्यमकृत्वाहं भृशं तप्यामि दुर्मतिः ।
न हि श्रोतास्मि भीष्मस्य धर्मयुक्तं प्रभाषितम् ॥१५॥
15. tacca vākyamakṛtvāhaṁ bhṛśaṁ tapyāmi durmatiḥ ,
na hi śrotāsmi bhīṣmasya dharmayuktaṁ prabhāṣitam.
15. tat ca vākyam akṛtvā aham bhṛśam tapyāmi durmatiḥ
na hi śrotā asmi bhīṣmasya dharmayuktam prabhāṣitam
15. aham durmatiḥ tat vākyam akṛtvā ca bhṛśam tapyāmi.
hi (aham) bhīṣmasya dharmayuktam prabhāṣitam śrotā na asmi.
15. And because I, being foolish, did not follow that advice, I now grieve intensely. Indeed, I was not a listener to what Bhishma had said, which was endowed with natural law (dharma).
दुर्योधनस्य च तथा वृषभस्येव नर्दतः ।
दुःशासनवधं श्रुत्वा कर्णस्य च विपर्ययम् ।
द्रोणसूर्योपरागं च हृदयं मे विदीर्यते ॥१६॥
16. duryodhanasya ca tathā vṛṣabhasyeva nardataḥ ,
duḥśāsanavadhaṁ śrutvā karṇasya ca viparyayam ,
droṇasūryoparāgaṁ ca hṛdayaṁ me vidīryate.
16. duryodhanasya ca tathā vṛṣabhasya
iva nardataḥ duḥśāsanavadham śrutvā
karṇasya ca viparyayam
droṇasūryoparāgam ca hṛdayam me vidīryate
16. duryodhanasya vṛṣabhasya iva nardataḥ (dhvanim),
duḥśāsanavadham ca,
karṇasya viparyayam ca,
tathā droṇasūryoparāgam ca śrutvā me hṛdayam vidīryate.
16. And having heard of Duryodhana, roaring like a bull, and the slaying of Duḥśāsana, and the reversal of Karna's fortune, and the eclipse (demise) of Drona who was like the sun, my heart is being torn apart.
न स्मराम्यात्मनः किंचित्पुरा संजय दुष्कृतम् ।
यस्येदं फलमद्येह मया मूढेन भुज्यते ॥१७॥
17. na smarāmyātmanaḥ kiṁcitpurā saṁjaya duṣkṛtam ,
yasyedaṁ phalamadyeha mayā mūḍhena bhujyate.
17. na smarāmi ātmanaḥ kiṃcit purā saṃjaya duṣkṛtam
yasya idam phalam adya iha mayā mūḍhena bhujyate
17. saṃjaya,
aham ātmanaḥ purā kiṃcit दुष्कृतम् न स्मरामि,
यस्य इदम् फलम् अद्य इह मूढेन मया भुज्यते।
17. O Sanjaya, I do not remember any past misdeed of my own self (ātman) for which this consequence is being experienced by me, a foolish man, here today.
नूनं ह्यपकृतं किंचिन्मया पूर्वेषु जन्मसु ।
येन मां दुःखभागेषु धाता कर्मसु युक्तवान् ॥१८॥
18. nūnaṁ hyapakṛtaṁ kiṁcinmayā pūrveṣu janmasu ,
yena māṁ duḥkhabhāgeṣu dhātā karmasu yuktavān.
18. nūnam hi apakṛtam kiṃcit mayā pūrveṣu janmasu
yena mām duḥkhabhāgeṣu dhātā karmasu yuktavān
18. nūnam hi mayā pūrveṣu janmasu kiṃcit apakṛtam
yena dhātā mām duḥkhabhāgeṣu karmasu yuktavān
18. Surely, I must have committed some wrong in previous lives (janmasu), by which Providence (dhātā) has engaged me in sorrowful circumstances (karmasu).
परिणामश्च वयसः सर्वबन्धुक्षयश्च मे ।
सुहृन्मित्रविनाशश्च दैवयोगादुपागतः ।
कोऽन्योऽस्ति दुःखिततरो मया लोके पुमानिह ॥१९॥
19. pariṇāmaśca vayasaḥ sarvabandhukṣayaśca me ,
suhṛnmitravināśaśca daivayogādupāgataḥ ,
ko'nyo'sti duḥkhitataro mayā loke pumāniha.
19. pariṇāmaḥ ca vayasaḥ sarvabandhukṣayaḥ
ca me suhṛnmitravināśaḥ ca
daivayogāt upāgataḥ kaḥ anyaḥ asti
duḥkhitataraḥ mayā loke pumān iha
19. vayasaḥ pariṇāmaḥ ca me sarvabandhukṣayaḥ
ca suhṛnmitravināśaḥ ca
daivayogāt upāgataḥ kaḥ anyaḥ pumān
iha loke mayā duḥkhitataraḥ asti
19. The decline of my age, the destruction of all my relatives, and the loss of my friends and allies – all these have come upon me by the decree of fate. What other man in this world is more miserable than I?
तन्मामद्यैव पश्यन्तु पाण्डवाः संशितव्रतम् ।
विवृतं ब्रह्मलोकस्य दीर्घमध्वानमास्थितम् ॥२०॥
20. tanmāmadyaiva paśyantu pāṇḍavāḥ saṁśitavratam ,
vivṛtaṁ brahmalokasya dīrghamadhvānamāsthitam.
20. tat mām adya eva paśyantu pāṇḍavāḥ saṃśitavratam
vivṛtam brahmalokasya dīrgham adhvānam āsthitam
20. tat pāṇḍavāḥ adya eva saṃśitavratam brahmalokasya
vivṛtam dīrgham adhvānam āsthitam mām paśyantu
20. Therefore, let the Pāṇḍavas behold me today, firm in my vows, as I stand upon the long, opened path leading to the world of Brahmā (brahmaloka).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्य लालप्यमानस्य बहुशोकं विचिन्वतः ।
शोकापहं नरेन्द्रस्य संजयो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
21. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasya lālapyamānasya bahuśokaṁ vicinvataḥ ,
śokāpahaṁ narendrasya saṁjayo vākyamabravīt.
21. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tasya lālapyamānasya bahuśokam
vicinvataḥ śokāpaham narendrasya saṃjayaḥ vākyam abravīt
21. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca saṃjayaḥ lālapyamānasya bahuśokam
vicinvataḥ tasya narendrasya śokāpaham vākyam abravīt
21. Vaiśampāyana said: To that king, who was lamenting and deeply pondering his great sorrow, Saṃjaya spoke words that removed his grief.
शोकं राजन्व्यपनुद श्रुतास्ते वेदनिश्चयाः ।
शास्त्रागमाश्च विविधा वृद्धेभ्यो नृपसत्तम ।
सृञ्जये पुत्रशोकार्ते यदूचुर्मुनयः पुरा ॥२२॥
22. śokaṁ rājanvyapanuda śrutāste vedaniścayāḥ ,
śāstrāgamāśca vividhā vṛddhebhyo nṛpasattama ,
sṛñjaye putraśokārte yadūcurmunayaḥ purā.
22. śokam rājan vyapanuda śrutāḥ te
vedaniścayāḥ śāstrāgamāḥ ca vividhāḥ
vṛddhebhyo nṛpasattama sṛñjaye
putraśokārte yat ūcuḥ munayaḥ purā
22. rājan nṛpasattama,
śokam vyapanuda.
te vedaniścayāḥ ca vividhāḥ śāstrāgamāḥ vṛddhebhyo śrutāḥ.
yat munayaḥ purā putraśokārte sṛñjaye ūcuḥ.
22. O king, cast away your sorrow. You have heard the definitive doctrines of the Vedas and various traditional texts (śāstras) from the elders, O best among kings. (These are similar to what) the sages formerly told Sañjaya, who was afflicted by the grief (śoka) for his son.
तथा यौवनजं दर्पमास्थिते ते सुते नृप ।
न त्वया सुहृदां वाक्यं ब्रुवतामवधारितम् ।
स्वार्थश्च न कृतः कश्चिल्लुब्धेन फलगृद्धिना ॥२३॥
23. tathā yauvanajaṁ darpamāsthite te sute nṛpa ,
na tvayā suhṛdāṁ vākyaṁ bruvatāmavadhāritam ,
svārthaśca na kṛtaḥ kaścillubdhena phalagṛddhinā.
23. tathā yauvanajam darpam āsthite te
sute nṛpa na tvayā suhṛdām vākyam
bruvatām avadhāritam svārthaḥ ca na
kṛtaḥ kaścit lubdhena phalagṛddhinā
23. nṛpa,
tathā te sute yauvanajam darpam āsthite (sati),
bruvatām suhṛdām vākyam tvayā na avadhāritam.
ca lubdhena phalagṛddhinā kaścit svārthaḥ na kṛtaḥ.
23. O king, when your son was seized by the arrogance born of youth, the words of well-wishers, though spoken, were not heeded by you. And by that greedy one, craving for rewards, no self-interest was ever achieved.
तव दुःशासनो मन्त्री राधेयश्च दुरात्मवान् ।
शकुनिश्चैव दुष्टात्मा चित्रसेनश्च दुर्मतिः ।
शल्यश्च येन वै सर्वं शल्यभूतं कृतं जगत् ॥२४॥
24. tava duḥśāsano mantrī rādheyaśca durātmavān ,
śakuniścaiva duṣṭātmā citrasenaśca durmatiḥ ,
śalyaśca yena vai sarvaṁ śalyabhūtaṁ kṛtaṁ jagat.
24. tava duḥśāsanaḥ mantrī rādheyaḥ ca
durātmavān śakuniḥ ca eva duṣṭātmā
citrasenaḥ ca durmatiḥ śalyaḥ ca yena
vai sarvam śalyabhūtam kṛtam jagat
24. tava mantrī duḥśāsanaḥ (āsīt),
ca rādheyaḥ durātmavān.
ca eva śakuniḥ duṣṭātmā,
ca citrasenaḥ durmatiḥ.
ca śalyaḥ (āsīt),
yena vai sarvam jagat śalyabhūtam कृतम्।
24. Your minister was Duḥśāsana, and Rādhā's son (Karṇa) was evil-minded. Śakuni was also wicked, and Citrasena was ill-intentioned. And Śalya, by whom indeed the entire world was made like a dart (śalya).
कुरुवृद्धस्य भीष्मस्य गान्धार्या विदुरस्य च ।
न कृतं वचनं तेन तव पुत्रेण भारत ॥२५॥
25. kuruvṛddhasya bhīṣmasya gāndhāryā vidurasya ca ,
na kṛtaṁ vacanaṁ tena tava putreṇa bhārata.
25. kuruvṛddhasya bhīṣmasya gāndhāryā vidurasya
ca na kṛtam vacanam tena tava putreṇa bhārata
25. bhārata,
kuru-vṛddhasya bhīṣmasya,
gāndhāryāḥ ca vidurasya वचनम् तेन तव पुत्रेण न कृतम्।
25. The words of Bhīṣma, the elder of the Kurus, of Gāndhārī, and of Vidura were not heeded by your son, O descendant of Bharata.
न धर्मः सत्कृतः कश्चिन्नित्यं युद्धमिति ब्रुवन् ।
क्षपिताः क्षत्रियाः सर्वे शत्रूणां वर्धितं यशः ॥२६॥
26. na dharmaḥ satkṛtaḥ kaścinnityaṁ yuddhamiti bruvan ,
kṣapitāḥ kṣatriyāḥ sarve śatrūṇāṁ vardhitaṁ yaśaḥ.
26. na dharmaḥ satkṛtaḥ kaścit nityam yuddham iti bruvan
kṣapitāḥ kṣatriyāḥ sarve śatrūṇām vardhitam yaśaḥ
26. kaścit dharmaḥ na satkṛtaḥ nityam yuddham iti bruvan
sarve kṣatriyāḥ kṣapitāḥ śatrūṇām yaśaḥ vardhitam
26. No intrinsic nature (dharma) was properly honored by anyone, with everyone constantly declaring, 'This is war!' As a result, all the warriors (kṣatriya) were destroyed, and the glory of the enemies increased.
मध्यस्थो हि त्वमप्यासीर्न क्षमं किंचिदुक्तवान् ।
धूर्धरेण त्वया भारस्तुलया न समं धृतः ॥२७॥
27. madhyastho hi tvamapyāsīrna kṣamaṁ kiṁciduktavān ,
dhūrdhareṇa tvayā bhārastulayā na samaṁ dhṛtaḥ.
27. madhyasthaḥ hi tvam api āsīḥ na kṣamam kiñcit uktavān
dhūrdhareṇa tvayā bhāraḥ tulayā na samam dhṛtaḥ
27. hi tvam api madhyasthaḥ āsīḥ na kiñcit kṣamam uktavān
dhūrdhareṇa tvayā bhāraḥ tulayā na samam dhṛtaḥ
27. Indeed, you yourself remained neutral (madhyastha) and did not speak anything appropriate. You, as the leader (dhūrdhara), did not bear the burden impartially, like with a balance.
आदावेव मनुष्येण वर्तितव्यं यथा क्षमम् ।
यथा नातीतमर्थं वै पश्चात्तापेन युज्यते ॥२८॥
28. ādāveva manuṣyeṇa vartitavyaṁ yathā kṣamam ,
yathā nātītamarthaṁ vai paścāttāpena yujyate.
28. ādau eva manuṣyeṇa vartitavyam yathā kṣamam
yathā na atītam artham vai paścāttāpena yujyate
28. manuṣyeṇa ādau eva yathā kṣamam vartitavyam
yathā atītam artham vai paścāttāpena na yujyate
28. From the very beginning, a person should act appropriately so that they are not later associated with regret (paścāttāpa) concerning a past matter.
पुत्रगृद्ध्या त्वया राजन्प्रियं तस्य चिकीर्षता ।
पश्चात्तापमिदं प्राप्तं न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥२९॥
29. putragṛddhyā tvayā rājanpriyaṁ tasya cikīrṣatā ,
paścāttāpamidaṁ prāptaṁ na tvaṁ śocitumarhasi.
29. putragṛddhyā tvayā rājan priyam tasya cikīrṣatā
paścāttāpam idam prāptam na tvam śocitum arhasi
29. rājan putragṛddhyā tasya priyam cikīrṣatā tvayā
idam paścāttāpam prāptam tvam śocitum na arhasi
29. O King, because you longed for a son (putragṛddhyā) and wished to do what was dear to him, you have incurred this regret (paścāttāpa). Therefore, you ought not to grieve.
मधु यः केवलं दृष्ट्वा प्रपातं नानुपश्यति ।
स भ्रष्टो मधुलोभेन शोचत्येव यथा भवान् ॥३०॥
30. madhu yaḥ kevalaṁ dṛṣṭvā prapātaṁ nānupaśyati ,
sa bhraṣṭo madhulobhena śocatyeva yathā bhavān.
30. madhu yaḥ kevalam dṛṣṭvā prapātam na anupaśyati
saḥ bhraṣṭaḥ madhulobhena śocati eva yathā bhavān
30. yaḥ kevalam madhu dṛṣṭvā prapātam na anupaśyati
saḥ madhulobhena bhraṣṭaḥ yathā bhavān eva śocati
30. One who sees only the honey and does not perceive the precipice, such a person, ruined by greed for honey, surely grieves, just as you do.
अर्थान्न शोचन्प्राप्नोति न शोचन्विन्दते सुखम् ।
न शोचञ्श्रियमाप्नोति न शोचन्विन्दते परम् ॥३१॥
31. arthānna śocanprāpnoti na śocanvindate sukham ,
na śocañśriyamāpnoti na śocanvindate param.

na śocan śriyam āpnoti na śocan vindate param
31. śocan na arthān prāpnoti,
śocan na sukham vindate.
śocan na śriyam āpnoti,
śocan na param vindate.
31. One who does not grieve obtains wealth; one who does not grieve finds happiness. One who does not grieve attains prosperity; one who does not grieve finds the supreme (param).
स्वयमुत्पादयित्वाग्निं वस्त्रेण परिवेष्टयेत् ।
दह्यमानो मनस्तापं भजते न स पण्डितः ॥३२॥
32. svayamutpādayitvāgniṁ vastreṇa pariveṣṭayet ,
dahyamāno manastāpaṁ bhajate na sa paṇḍitaḥ.
32. svayam utpādayitvā agnim vastreṇa pariveṣṭayet
dahyamānaḥ manastāpam bhajate na saḥ paṇḍitaḥ
32. yaḥ svayam agnim utpādayitvā vastreṇa pariveṣṭayet,
dahyamānaḥ manastāpam bhajate,
saḥ na paṇḍitaḥ
32. One who himself ignites a fire and then wraps it with a garment, and subsequently suffers mental distress from being burned, such a person is not truly wise.
त्वयैव ससुतेनायं वाक्यवायुसमीरितः ।
लोभाज्येन च संसिक्तो ज्वलितः पार्थपावकः ॥३३॥
33. tvayaiva sasutenāyaṁ vākyavāyusamīritaḥ ,
lobhājyena ca saṁsikto jvalitaḥ pārthapāvakaḥ.
33. tvayā eva sasutena ayam vākyavāyusamīritaḥ
lobhājyena ca saṃsiktaḥ jvalitaḥ pārthapāvakaḥ
33. tvayā sasutena eva ayam vākyavāyusamīritaḥ ca
lobhājyena saṃsiktaḥ pārthapāvakaḥ jvalitaḥ
33. Indeed, this fire of Arjuna (Pārtha) has been ignited by you and your son; it has been fanned by the wind of your words and drenched with the ghee of greed.
तस्मिन्समिद्धे पतिताः शलभा इव ते सुताः ।
तान्केशवार्चिर्निर्दग्धान्न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥३४॥
34. tasminsamiddhe patitāḥ śalabhā iva te sutāḥ ,
tānkeśavārcirnirdagdhānna tvaṁ śocitumarhasi.
34. tasmin samiddhe patitāḥ śalabhāḥ iva te sutāḥ
tān keśavārcinirdagdhān na tvam śocitum arhasi
34. te sutāḥ tasmin samiddhe śalabhāḥ iva patitāḥ
tvam tān keśavārcinirdagdhān na śocitum arhasi
34. Your sons have fallen into that blazing fire like moths. You should not grieve for them, for they have been consumed by the flames of Keśava.
यच्चाश्रुपातकलिलं वदनं वहसे नृप ।
अशास्त्रदृष्टमेतद्धि न प्रशंसन्ति पण्डिताः ॥३५॥
35. yaccāśrupātakalilaṁ vadanaṁ vahase nṛpa ,
aśāstradṛṣṭametaddhi na praśaṁsanti paṇḍitāḥ.
35. yat ca aśrupātakalilam vadanam vahase nṛpa
aśāstradṛṣṭam etat hi na praśaṃsanti paṇḍitāḥ
35. nṛpa yat ca aśrupātakalilam vadanam vahase hi
etat aśāstradṛṣṭam paṇḍitāḥ na praśaṃsanti
35. And, O King, the face you bear, stained with tears, is a sight not sanctioned by the scriptures; truly, wise persons do not commend such a thing.
विस्फुलिङ्गा इव ह्येतान्दहन्ति किल मानवान् ।
जहीहि मन्युं बुद्ध्या वै धारयात्मानमात्मना ॥३६॥
36. visphuliṅgā iva hyetāndahanti kila mānavān ,
jahīhi manyuṁ buddhyā vai dhārayātmānamātmanā.
36. visphuliṅgāḥ iva hi etān dahanti kila mānavān
jahīhi manyum buddhyā vai dhāraya ātmānam ātmanā
36. hi kila visphuliṅgāḥ iva etān mānavān dahanti
buddhyā manyum jahīhi vai ātmanā ātmānam dhāraya
36. For indeed, like sparks (of fire), these (emotions of grief and anger) consume human beings. Give up this sorrow with your intellect (buddhi), and uphold your own self (ātman) by your own self (ātman).
एवमाश्वासितस्तेन संजयेन महात्मना ।
विदुरो भूय एवाह बुद्धिपूर्वं परंतप ॥३७॥
37. evamāśvāsitastena saṁjayena mahātmanā ,
viduro bhūya evāha buddhipūrvaṁ paraṁtapa.
37. evam āśvāsitaḥ tena saṃjayena mahātmanā
viduraḥ bhūyaḥ eva āha buddhipūrvam paraṃtapa
37. paraṃtapa tena mahātmanā saṃjayena evam
āśvāsitaḥ viduraḥ bhūyaḥ eva buddhipūrvam āha
37. Thus consoled by that great-souled Sañjaya, Vidura again spoke, with thoughtful deliberation, O tormentor of foes.
