ततो युधिष्ठिरश्चैव भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः ।
द्रोणपुत्रं महाराज समन्तात्पर्यवारयन् ॥१॥

tato yudhiṣṭhiraścaiva bhīmasenaśca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
droṇaputraṁ mahārāja samantātparyavārayan.

1. Sañjaya said: Then, O great King, Yudhishthira and Bhimasena, the son of Pāṇḍu, surrounded Droṇa's son from all sides.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा भारद्वाजेन संवृतः ।
अभ्ययात्पाण्डवान्संख्ये ततो युद्धमवर्तत ।
घोररूपं महाराज भीरूणां भयवर्धनम् ॥२॥
2. tato duryodhano rājā bhāradvājena saṁvṛtaḥ ,
abhyayātpāṇḍavānsaṁkhye tato yuddhamavartata ,
ghorarūpaṁ mahārāja bhīrūṇāṁ bhayavardhanam.

saṃvṛtaḥ abhyayāt pāṇḍavān saṃkhye
tataḥ yuddham avartata ghorarūpam

2. Then King Duryodhana, accompanied by Droṇa (the son of Bhāradvāja), advanced against the Pāṇḍavas in battle. Subsequently, a terrible war ensued, O great king, which intensified the fear of the cowardly.
अम्बष्ठान्मालवान्वङ्गाञ्शिबींस्त्रैगर्तकानपि ।
प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय गणान्क्रुद्धो युधिष्ठिरः ॥३॥
3. ambaṣṭhānmālavānvaṅgāñśibīṁstraigartakānapi ,
prāhiṇonmṛtyulokāya gaṇānkruddho yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.

3. Enraged, Yudhiṣṭhira dispatched the throngs of Ambaṣṭhas, Mālavās, Vaṅgas, Śibis, and also the Trigartas to the realm of death.
अभीषाहाञ्शूरसेनान्क्षत्रियान्युद्धदुर्मदान् ।
निकृत्य पृथिवीं चक्रे भीमः शोणितकर्दमाम् ॥४॥
4. abhīṣāhāñśūrasenānkṣatriyānyuddhadurmadān ,
nikṛtya pṛthivīṁ cakre bhīmaḥ śoṇitakardamām.

4. Bhīma, having slain the Abhīṣāhas, the Śūrasenas, and other Kṣatriyas who were formidable in war, turned the earth into a mire of blood.
यौधेयारट्टराजन्यान्मद्रकांश्च गणान्युधि ।
प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय किरीटी निशितैः शरैः ॥५॥
5. yaudheyāraṭṭarājanyānmadrakāṁśca gaṇānyudhi ,
prāhiṇonmṛtyulokāya kirīṭī niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.

prāhiṇot mṛtyulokāya kirīṭī niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ

5. Arjuna, the crowned one, with his sharp arrows, sent the hosts of Yaudheyas, Āraṭṭas, Rājanyas, and Madrakas to the realm of death in battle.
प्रगाढमञ्जोगतिभिर्नाराचैरभिपीडिताः ।
निपेतुर्द्विरदा भूमौ द्विशृङ्गा इव पर्वताः ॥६॥
6. pragāḍhamañjogatibhirnārācairabhipīḍitāḥ ,
nipeturdviradā bhūmau dviśṛṅgā iva parvatāḥ.

nipetuḥ dviradāḥ bhūmau dviśṛṅgā iva parvatāḥ

6. Severely tormented by arrows that pierced deeply and swiftly, the elephants fell to the ground, like mountains with two peaks.
निकृत्तैर्हस्तिहस्तैश्च लुठमानैस्ततस्ततः ।
रराज वसुधा कीर्णा विसर्पद्भिरिवोरगैः ॥७॥
7. nikṛttairhastihastaiśca luṭhamānaistatastataḥ ,
rarāja vasudhā kīrṇā visarpadbhirivoragaiḥ.

rarāja vasudhā kīrṇā visarpadbhiḥ iva uragaiḥ

7. The earth appeared scattered with severed elephant trunks writhing here and there, like it was covered with slithering snakes.
क्षिप्तैः कनकचित्रैश्च नृपच्छत्रैः क्षितिर्बभौ ।
द्यौरिवादित्यचन्द्राद्यैर्ग्रहैः कीर्णा युगक्षये ॥८॥
8. kṣiptaiḥ kanakacitraiśca nṛpacchatraiḥ kṣitirbabhau ,
dyaurivādityacandrādyairgrahaiḥ kīrṇā yugakṣaye.

dyauḥ iva ādityacandrādyaiḥ grahaiḥ kīrṇā yugakṣaye

8. The earth shone, scattered with golden, splendid royal umbrellas that had been thrown down, like the sky at the end of an eon (yugakṣaya), covered with sun, moon, and other celestial bodies (grahas).
हत प्रहरताभीता विध्यत व्यवकृन्तत ।
इत्यासीत्तुमुलः शब्दः शोणाश्वस्य रथं प्रति ॥९॥
9. hata praharatābhītā vidhyata vyavakṛntata ,
ityāsīttumulaḥ śabdaḥ śoṇāśvasya rathaṁ prati.
9. hata praharata abhītā vidhyata vyavakṛntata
iti āsīt tumulaḥ śabdaḥ śoṇāśvasya ratham prati
9. 'hata praharata abhītā vidhyata vyavakṛntata'
iti śoṇāśvasya ratham prati tumulaḥ śabdaḥ āsīt
9. 'Strike! Attack! Don't be afraid! Pierce! Cut down!' Such was the tumultuous sound around the chariot of Śoṇāśva.
द्रोणस्तु परमक्रुद्धो वायव्यास्त्रेण संयुगे ।
व्यधमत्तान्यथा वायुर्मेघानिव दुरत्ययः ॥१०॥
10. droṇastu paramakruddho vāyavyāstreṇa saṁyuge ,
vyadhamattānyathā vāyurmeghāniva duratyayaḥ.
10. droṇaḥ tu paramakruddhaḥ vāyavyāstreṇa saṃyuge
vyadhamat tāni yathā vāyuḥ meghān iva duratyayaḥ
10. paramakruddhaḥ droṇaḥ tu saṃyuge vāyavyāstreṇa tān vyadhamat,
yathā duratyayaḥ vāyuḥ meghān iva.
10. Extremely enraged, Drona, in battle, scattered them with the Vayavya weapon, just as an irresistible wind disperses clouds.
ते हन्यमाना द्रोणेन पाञ्चालाः प्राद्रवन्भयात् ।
पश्यतो भीमसेनस्य पार्थस्य च महात्मनः ॥११॥
11. te hanyamānā droṇena pāñcālāḥ prādravanbhayāt ,
paśyato bhīmasenasya pārthasya ca mahātmanaḥ.
11. te hanyamānāḥ droṇena pāñcālāḥ prādravan bhayāt
paśyataḥ bhīmasenasya pārthasya ca mahātmanaḥ
11. te pāñcālāḥ droṇena hanyamānāḥ bhayāt prādravan,
mahātmanaḥ bhīmasenasya ca pārthasya paśyataḥ.
11. Being attacked by Drona, the Pañcālas fled in fear, even as Bhimasena and the great-souled Partha (Arjuna) watched.
ततः किरीटी भीमश्च सहसा संन्यवर्तताम् ।
महता रथवंशेन परिगृह्य बलं तव ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ kirīṭī bhīmaśca sahasā saṁnyavartatām ,
mahatā rathavaṁśena parigṛhya balaṁ tava.
12. tataḥ kirīṭī bhīmaḥ ca sahasā saṃnyavartatām
mahatā rathavaṃśena parigṛhya balam tava
12. tataḥ kirīṭī ca bhīmaḥ sahasā saṃnyavartatām,
tava balam mahatā rathavaṃśena parigṛhya.
12. Then Arjuna, the crowned one (kirīṭī), and Bhima quickly returned, encircling your forces with a mighty array of chariots.
बीभत्सुर्दक्षिणं पार्श्वमुत्तरं तु वृकोदरः ।
भारद्वाजं शरौघाभ्यां महद्भ्यामभ्यवर्षताम् ॥१३॥
13. bībhatsurdakṣiṇaṁ pārśvamuttaraṁ tu vṛkodaraḥ ,
bhāradvājaṁ śaraughābhyāṁ mahadbhyāmabhyavarṣatām.
13. bībhatsuḥ dakṣiṇam pārśvam uttaram tu vṛkodaraḥ
bhāradvājaṃ śaraughābhyām mahadbhyām abhyavarṣatām
13. bībhatsuḥ tu dakṣiṇam pārśvam,
vṛkodaraḥ uttaram; (tau dvau) bhāradvājaṃ mahadbhyām śaraughābhyām abhyavarṣatām.
13. Bibhatsu (Arjuna) on the right flank and Vrikodara (Bhima) on the left, then showered Dronacharya (Bhāradvāja) with two mighty torrents of arrows.
तौ तदा सृञ्जयाश्चैव पाञ्चालाश्च महारथाः ।
अन्वगच्छन्महाराज मत्स्याश्च सह सोमकैः ॥१४॥
14. tau tadā sṛñjayāścaiva pāñcālāśca mahārathāḥ ,
anvagacchanmahārāja matsyāśca saha somakaiḥ.
14. tau tadā sṛñjayāḥ ca eva pāñcālāḥ ca mahārathāḥ
anvagacchan mahārāja matsyāḥ ca saha somakaiḥ
14. mahārāja tadā tau sṛñjayāḥ ca eva pāñcālāḥ ca

14. O great king, at that time, those two (Arjuna and Krishna), along with the great charioteers among the Srinjayas and Panchalas, and also the Matsyas accompanied by the Somakas, all followed.
तथैव तव पुत्रस्य रथोदाराः प्रहारिणः ।
महत्या सेनया सार्धं जग्मुर्द्रोणरथं प्रति ॥१५॥
15. tathaiva tava putrasya rathodārāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ,
mahatyā senayā sārdhaṁ jagmurdroṇarathaṁ prati.
15. tathā eva tava putrasya rathodārāḥ prahāriṇaḥ
mahatyā senayā sārdham jagmuḥ droṇaratham prati
15. tathā eva tava putrasya rathodārāḥ prahāriṇaḥ
mahatyā senayā sārdham droṇaratham prati jagmuḥ
15. Similarly, your son's noble chariot-warriors and attackers, accompanied by a large army, advanced towards Drona's chariot.
ततः सा भारती सेना वध्यमाना किरीटिना ।
तमसा निद्रया चैव पुनरेव व्यदीर्यत ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ sā bhāratī senā vadhyamānā kirīṭinā ,
tamasā nidrayā caiva punareva vyadīryata.
16. tataḥ sā bhāratī senā vadhyamānā kirīṭinā
tamasā nidrayā ca eva punaḥ eva vyadīryata
16. tataḥ kirīṭinā vadhyamānā sā bhāratī senā tamasā

16. Then, that army of the Bhāratas, being slaughtered by Arjuna (Kirīṭin), and also by darkness (tamas) and sleep, once again scattered.
द्रोणेन वार्यमाणास्ते स्वयं तव सुतेन च ।
न शक्यन्ते महाराज योधा वारयितुं तदा ॥१७॥
17. droṇena vāryamāṇāste svayaṁ tava sutena ca ,
na śakyante mahārāja yodhā vārayituṁ tadā.
17. droṇena vāryamāṇāḥ te svayam tava sutena ca
na śakyante mahārāja yodhāḥ vārayitum tadā
17. mahārāja tadā droṇena tava sutena svayam ca
vāryamāṇāḥ te yodhāḥ vārayitum na śakyante
17. O great king, at that time, those warriors, even though they were being restrained by Drona and by your own son, could not be stopped.
सा पाण्डुपुत्रस्य शरैर्दार्यमाणा महाचमूः ।
तमसा संवृते लोके व्यद्रवत्सर्वतोमुखी ॥१८॥
18. sā pāṇḍuputrasya śarairdāryamāṇā mahācamūḥ ,
tamasā saṁvṛte loke vyadravatsarvatomukhī.
18. sā pāṇḍuputrasya śaraiḥ dāryamāṇā mahācamūḥ
tamasā saṃvṛte loke vyadravat sarvatomukhī
18. mahācamūḥ sā pāṇḍuputrasya śaraiḥ dāryamāṇā
loke tamasā saṃvṛte sarvatomukhī vyadravat
18. That great army, being torn apart by the arrows of Pāṇḍu's son, fled in all directions as the world became enveloped in darkness.
उत्सृज्य शतशो वाहांस्तत्र केचिन्नराधिपाः ।
प्राद्रवन्त महाराज भयाविष्टाः समन्ततः ॥१९॥
19. utsṛjya śataśo vāhāṁstatra kecinnarādhipāḥ ,
prādravanta mahārāja bhayāviṣṭāḥ samantataḥ.
19. utsṛjya śataśaḥ vāhān tatra kecit narādhipāḥ
prādravanta mahārāja bhayāviṣṭāḥ samantataḥ

19. O great king, some of those kings there, abandoning hundreds of their horses, fled in all directions, overcome by fear.
