युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
कथंवीर्यः समभवत्स राजा वदतां वरः ।
कथं च जातरूपेण समयुज्यत स द्विज ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kathaṁvīryaḥ samabhavatsa rājā vadatāṁ varaḥ ,
kathaṁ ca jātarūpeṇa samayujyata sa dvija.

1. Yudhishthira said: 'O best of speakers, what kind of power did that king possess? And O twice-born (dvija), how did he become associated with gold?'
क्व च तत्सांप्रतं द्रव्यं भगवन्नवतिष्ठते ।
कथं च शक्यमस्माभिस्तदवाप्तुं तपोधन ॥२॥
2. kva ca tatsāṁprataṁ dravyaṁ bhagavannavatiṣṭhate ,
kathaṁ ca śakyamasmābhistadavāptuṁ tapodhana.
2. kva ca tat sāmpratam dravyam bhagavan avatiṣṭhate
kathaṃ ca śakyam asmābhiḥ tat avāptum tapodhana
2. O revered one, where does that wealth currently exist? And O ascetic, how is it possible for us to obtain it?
व्यास उवाच ।
असुराश्चैव देवाश्च दक्षस्यासन्प्रजापतेः ।
अपत्यं बहुलं तात तेऽस्पर्धन्त परस्परम् ॥३॥
3. vyāsa uvāca ,
asurāścaiva devāśca dakṣasyāsanprajāpateḥ ,
apatyaṁ bahulaṁ tāta te'spardhanta parasparam.
3. vyāsaḥ uvāca asurāḥ ca eva devāḥ ca dakṣasya āsan
prajāpateḥ apatyam bahulam tāta te aspardhanta parasparam
3. Vyasa said: 'O dear one, the Asuras and the Devas were indeed the numerous progeny of Daksha Prajapati. They contended with each other.'
तथैवाङ्गिरसः पुत्रौ व्रततुल्यौ बभूवतुः ।
बृहस्पतिर्बृहत्तेजाः संवर्तश्च तपोधनः ॥४॥
4. tathaivāṅgirasaḥ putrau vratatulyau babhūvatuḥ ,
bṛhaspatirbṛhattejāḥ saṁvartaśca tapodhanaḥ.
4. tathā eva aṅgirasaḥ putrau vrata-tulyau babhūvatuḥ
bṛhaspatiḥ bṛhat-tejāḥ saṃvartaḥ ca tapaḥ-dhanaḥ
4. Similarly, two sons of Angiras were born, equal in their sacred vows (vrata): Bṛhaspati, of immense brilliance, and Saṃvarta, whose wealth was spiritual discipline (tapas).
तावपि स्पर्धिनौ राजन्पृथगास्तां परस्परम् ।
बृहस्पतिश्च संवर्तं बाधते स्म पुनः पुनः ॥५॥
5. tāvapi spardhinau rājanpṛthagāstāṁ parasparam ,
bṛhaspatiśca saṁvartaṁ bādhate sma punaḥ punaḥ.
5. tau api spardhinau rājan pṛthak āstām parasparam
bṛhaspatiḥ ca saṃvartam bādhate sma punaḥ punaḥ
5. O King, those two, too, were rivals, living separately from each other. Bṛhaspati repeatedly harassed Saṃvarta.
स बाध्यमानः सततं भ्रात्रा ज्येष्ठेन भारत ।
अर्थानुत्सृज्य दिग्वासा वनवासमरोचयत् ॥६॥
6. sa bādhyamānaḥ satataṁ bhrātrā jyeṣṭhena bhārata ,
arthānutsṛjya digvāsā vanavāsamarocayat.
6. saḥ bādhyamānaḥ satatam bhrātrā jyeṣṭhena bhārata
arthān utsṛjya dik-vāsāḥ vana-vāsam arocayat
6. O Bhārata, he (Saṃvarta), being constantly harassed by his elder brother, gave up all his worldly possessions (artha), became an ascetic with only the directions as his garments, and chose to live in the forest.
वासवोऽप्यसुरान्सर्वान्निर्जित्य च निहत्य च ।
इन्द्रत्वं प्राप्य लोकेषु ततो वव्रे पुरोहितम् ।
पुत्रमङ्गिरसो ज्येष्ठं विप्रश्रेष्ठं बृहस्पतिम् ॥७॥
7. vāsavo'pyasurānsarvānnirjitya ca nihatya ca ,
indratvaṁ prāpya lokeṣu tato vavre purohitam ,
putramaṅgiraso jyeṣṭhaṁ vipraśreṣṭhaṁ bṛhaspatim.
7. vāsavaḥ api asurān sarvān nirjitya ca
nihatya ca indratvam prāpya lokeṣu
tataḥ vavre purohitam putram aṅgirasaḥ
jyeṣṭham vipra-śreṣṭham bṛhaspatim
7. Having conquered and slain all the asuras (demons), Vāsava (Indra) also attained the position of Indra in the worlds. Then he chose as his preceptor (purohita) the elder son of Angiras, Bṛhaspati, who was the foremost among brahmins.
याज्यस्त्वङ्गिरसः पूर्वमासीद्राजा करंधमः ।
वीर्येणाप्रतिमो लोके वृत्तेन च बलेन च ।
शतक्रतुरिवौजस्वी धर्मात्मा संशितव्रतः ॥८॥
8. yājyastvaṅgirasaḥ pūrvamāsīdrājā karaṁdhamaḥ ,
vīryeṇāpratimo loke vṛttena ca balena ca ,
śatakraturivaujasvī dharmātmā saṁśitavrataḥ.
8. yājyaḥ tu aṅgirasaḥ pūrvam āsīt rājā
karandhamaḥ vīryeṇa apratimaḥ
loke vṛttena ca balena ca śatakratuḥ
iva ojasvī dharmātmā saṃśitavrataḥ
8. pūrvam aṅgirasaḥ yājyaḥ rājā
karandhamaḥ āsīt loke vīryeṇa vṛttena ca
balena ca apratimaḥ śatakratuḥ
iva ojasvī dharmātmā saṃśitavrataḥ tu
8. Formerly, there was King Karandhama, who was a minister to the sage Angiras. He was unequaled in the world in valor, character, and strength. He was as powerful as Indra (Śatakratu), had a righteous disposition (dharma), and was resolute in his vows.
वाहनं यस्य योधाश्च द्रव्याणि विविधानि च ।
ध्यानादेवाभवद्राजन्मुखवातेन सर्वशः ॥९॥
9. vāhanaṁ yasya yodhāśca dravyāṇi vividhāni ca ,
dhyānādevābhavadrājanmukhavātena sarvaśaḥ.
9. vāhanam yasya yodhāḥ ca dravyāṇi vividhāni ca
dhyānāt eva abhavat rājan mukhavātena sarvaśaḥ
9. rājan yasya vāhanam ca yodhāḥ ca vividhāni
dravyāṇi dhyānāt eva mukhavātena sarvaśaḥ abhavat
9. O King, his conveyances, warriors, and various provisions came into being entirely by his mere thought and the breath of his mouth.
स गुणैः पार्थिवान्सर्वान्वशे चक्रे नराधिपः ।
संजीव्य कालमिष्टं च सशरीरो दिवं गतः ॥१०॥
10. sa guṇaiḥ pārthivānsarvānvaśe cakre narādhipaḥ ,
saṁjīvya kālamiṣṭaṁ ca saśarīro divaṁ gataḥ.
10. sa guṇaiḥ pārthivān sarvān vaśe cakre narādhipaḥ
saṃjīvya kālam iṣṭam ca saśarīraḥ divam gataḥ
10. saḥ narādhipaḥ guṇaiḥ sarvān pārthivān vaśe cakre
ca iṣṭam kālam saṃjīvya saśarīraḥ divam gataḥ
10. That lord of men brought all kings under his control by his virtues. After living his desired lifespan, he ascended to heaven with his physical body.
बभूव तस्य पुत्रस्तु ययातिरिव धर्मवित् ।
अविक्षिन्नाम शत्रुक्षित्स वशे कृतवान्महीम् ।
विक्रमेण गुणैश्चैव पितेवासीत्स पार्थिवः ॥११॥
11. babhūva tasya putrastu yayātiriva dharmavit ,
avikṣinnāma śatrukṣitsa vaśe kṛtavānmahīm ,
vikrameṇa guṇaiścaiva pitevāsītsa pārthivaḥ.
11. babhūva tasya putraḥ tu yayātiḥ iva
dharmavit avikṣit nāma śatrukṣit
saḥ vaśe kṛtavān mahīm vikrameṇa guṇaiḥ
ca eva pitā iva āsīt saḥ pārthivaḥ
11. tu tasya putraḥ avikṣit nāma śatrukṣit
yayātiḥ iva dharmavit babhūva
saḥ mahīm vaśe kṛtavān saḥ pārthivaḥ
vikrameṇa ca guṇaiḥ eva pitā iva āsīt
11. Indeed, his son, named Avikṣit, who was a destroyer of enemies and knowledgeable in (dharma) like Yayati, was born. He brought the earth under his control. That king was like his father in valor and also in his virtues.
तस्य वासवतुल्योऽभून्मरुत्तो नाम वीर्यवान् ।
पुत्रस्तमनुरक्ताभूत्पृथिवी सागराम्बरा ॥१२॥
12. tasya vāsavatulyo'bhūnmarutto nāma vīryavān ,
putrastamanuraktābhūtpṛthivī sāgarāmbarā.
12. tasya vāsavatulyaḥ abhūt maruttaḥ nāma vīryavān
putraḥ tam anuraktā abhūt pṛthivī sāgarāmbarā
12. tasya vīryavān putraḥ maruttaḥ nāma vāsavatulyaḥ
abhūt sāgarāmbarā pṛthivī tam anuraktā abhūt
12. His son, valorous and comparable to Indra (Vāsava), was named Marutta. The earth, clad in oceans, became devoted to him.
स्पर्धते सततं स स्म देवराजेन पार्थिवः ।
वासवोऽपि मरुत्तेन स्पर्धते पाण्डुनन्दन ॥१३॥
13. spardhate satataṁ sa sma devarājena pārthivaḥ ,
vāsavo'pi maruttena spardhate pāṇḍunandana.
13. spardhate satatam sa sma devarājena pārthivaḥ
vāsavaḥ api maruttena spardhate pāṇḍunandana
13. saḥ pārthivaḥ satatam devarājena spardhate sma
api vāsavaḥ maruttena spardhate pāṇḍunandana
13. That king constantly vied with the king of the gods, Indra (Vāsava). O son of Pāṇḍu, Vāsava himself also vied with Marutta.
शुचिः स गुणवानासीन्मरुत्तः पृथिवीपतिः ।
यतमानोऽपि यं शक्रो न विशेषयति स्म ह ॥१४॥
14. śuciḥ sa guṇavānāsīnmaruttaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ ,
yatamāno'pi yaṁ śakro na viśeṣayati sma ha.
14. śuciḥ sa guṇavān āsīt maruttaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ
yatamānaḥ api yam śakraḥ na viśeṣayati sma ha
14. saḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ maruttaḥ śuciḥ guṇavān āsīt
yam śakraḥ yatamānaḥ api na viśeṣayati sma ha
14. That lord of the earth, Marutta, was pure and virtuous. Even when striving, Śakra could not surpass him.
सोऽशक्नुवन्विशेषाय समाहूय बृहस्पतिम् ।
उवाचेदं वचो देवैः सहितो हरिवाहनः ॥१५॥
15. so'śaknuvanviśeṣāya samāhūya bṛhaspatim ,
uvācedaṁ vaco devaiḥ sahito harivāhanaḥ.
15. saḥ aśaknuvan viśeṣāya samāhūya bṛhaspatim
uvāca idam vacaḥ devaiḥ sahitaḥ harivāhanaḥ
15. aśaknuvan viśeṣāya harivāhanaḥ devaiḥ
sahitaḥ bṛhaspatim samāhūya idam vacaḥ uvāca
15. Unable to achieve superiority, Harivāhana (Indra), accompanied by the gods, summoned Bṛhaspati and spoke these words.
बृहस्पते मरुत्तस्य मा स्म कार्षीः कथंचन ।
दैवं कर्माथ वा पित्र्यं कर्तासि मम चेत्प्रियम् ॥१६॥
16. bṛhaspate maruttasya mā sma kārṣīḥ kathaṁcana ,
daivaṁ karmātha vā pitryaṁ kartāsi mama cetpriyam.
16. bṛhaspate maruttasya mā sma kārṣīḥ kathaṃcana daivaṃ
karma atha vā pitryaṃ kartā asi mama cet priyam
16. bṛhaspate maruttasya daivaṃ karma atha vā pitryaṃ kathaṃcana mā sma kārṣīḥ.
cet mama priyam kartā asi.
16. O Bṛhaspati, by no means perform any divine or ancestral ritual (karma) for Marutta. If you consider me dear, you will be my ritual performer.
अहं हि त्रिषु लोकेषु सुराणां च बृहस्पते ।
इन्द्रत्वं प्राप्तवानेको मरुत्तस्तु महीपतिः ॥१७॥
17. ahaṁ hi triṣu lokeṣu surāṇāṁ ca bṛhaspate ,
indratvaṁ prāptavāneko maruttastu mahīpatiḥ.
17. aham hi triṣu lokeṣu surāṇām ca bṛhaspate
indratvam prāptavān ekaḥ maruttaḥ tu mahīpatiḥ
17. bṛhaspate,
hi aham ekaḥ triṣu lokeṣu ca surāṇām indratvam prāptavān.
maruttaḥ tu mahīpatiḥ.
17. Indeed, O Bṛhaspati, I alone have attained the position of Indra in the three worlds and among the gods. Marutta, however, is merely a king.
कथं ह्यमर्त्यं ब्रह्मंस्त्वं याजयित्वा सुराधिपम् ।
याजयेर्मृत्युसंयुक्तं मरुत्तमविशङ्कया ॥१८॥
18. kathaṁ hyamartyaṁ brahmaṁstvaṁ yājayitvā surādhipam ,
yājayermṛtyusaṁyuktaṁ maruttamaviśaṅkayā.
18. katham hi amartyam brahman tvam yājayitvā surādhipam
yājayes mṛtyusaṃyuktam maruttam aviśaṅkayā
18. brahman,
hi katham tvam amartyam surādhipam yājayitvā,
mṛtyusaṃyuktam maruttam aviśaṅkayā yājayes?
18. O Brahmin, how can you, after officiating for me, the immortal lord of the gods, then without any hesitation officiate for Marutta, who is bound to mortality?
मां वा वृणीष्व भद्रं ते मरुत्तं वा महीपतिम् ।
परित्यज्य मरुत्तं वा यथाजोषं भजस्व माम् ॥१९॥
19. māṁ vā vṛṇīṣva bhadraṁ te maruttaṁ vā mahīpatim ,
parityajya maruttaṁ vā yathājoṣaṁ bhajasva mām.
19. mām vā vṛṇīṣva bhadram te maruttam vā mahīpatim
parityajya maruttam vā yathājoṣam bhajasva mām
19. bhadram te (bhavatu).
(tvam) mām vā vṛṇīṣva,
vā maruttam mahīpatim (vṛṇīṣva).
vā maruttam parityajya yathājoṣam mām bhajasva.
19. Choose either me or King Marutta; may good fortune be yours. Alternatively, abandon Marutta and serve me as you deem fit.
एवमुक्तः स कौरव्य देवराज्ञा बृहस्पतिः ।
मुहूर्तमिव संचिन्त्य देवराजानमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. evamuktaḥ sa kauravya devarājñā bṛhaspatiḥ ,
muhūrtamiva saṁcintya devarājānamabravīt.
20. evam uktaḥ saḥ kauravya devarājñā bṛhaspatiḥ
muhūrtam iva saṃcintya devarājānam abravīt
20. kauravya evam uktaḥ devarājñā saḥ bṛhaspatiḥ
muhūrtam iva saṃcintya devarājānam abravīt
20. O descendant of Kuru, thus addressed by the king of the gods, Bṛhaspati reflected for a moment and then spoke to Indra.
त्वं भूतानामधिपतिस्त्वयि लोकाः प्रतिष्ठिताः ।
नमुचेर्विश्वरूपस्य निहन्ता त्वं बलस्य च ॥२१॥
21. tvaṁ bhūtānāmadhipatistvayi lokāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ ,
namucerviśvarūpasya nihantā tvaṁ balasya ca.
21. tvam bhūtānām adhipatiḥ tvayi lokāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ
namuceḥ viśvarūpasya nihantā tvam balasya ca
21. tvam bhūtānām adhipatiḥ tvayi lokāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ
tvam namuceḥ viśvarūpasya balasya ca nihantā
21. You are the lord of all beings; in you the worlds are established. You are the slayer of Namuci, Viśvarūpa, and Bala.
त्वमाजहर्थ देवानामेको वीर श्रियं पराम् ।
त्वं बिभर्षि भुवं द्यां च सदैव बलसूदन ॥२२॥
22. tvamājahartha devānāmeko vīra śriyaṁ parām ,
tvaṁ bibharṣi bhuvaṁ dyāṁ ca sadaiva balasūdana.
22. tvam ājahartha devānām ekaḥ vīra śriyam parām
tvam bibharṣi bhuvam dyām ca sadā eva balasūdana
22. vīra tvam ekaḥ devānām parām śriyam ājahartha
balasūdana tvam sadā eva bhuvam dyām ca bibharṣi
22. O hero, you alone retrieved the supreme glory for the gods. O slayer of Bala, you always sustain both the earth and heaven.
पौरोहित्यं कथं कृत्वा तव देवगणेश्वर ।
याजयेयमहं मर्त्यं मरुत्तं पाकशासन ॥२३॥
23. paurohityaṁ kathaṁ kṛtvā tava devagaṇeśvara ,
yājayeyamahaṁ martyaṁ maruttaṁ pākaśāsana.
23. paurohityam katham kṛtvā tava devagaṇeśvara
yājayeyam aham martyam maruttam pākaśāsana
23. devagaṇeśvara pākaśāsana aham tava
paurohityam katham martyam maruttam yājayeyam
23. O lord of the host of gods, O Indra, how can I, having served as your priest, cause a mortal, King Marutta, to perform a "Vedic ritual (yajña)"?
समाश्वसिहि देवेश नाहं मर्त्याय कर्हिचित् ।
ग्रहीष्यामि स्रुवं यज्ञे शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥२४॥
24. samāśvasihi deveśa nāhaṁ martyāya karhicit ,
grahīṣyāmi sruvaṁ yajñe śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama.
24. samāśvasihi deveśa na aham martyāya karhicit
grahīṣyāmi sruvam yajñe śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
24. Be at ease, O Lord of gods. I will never, at any time, take the sacrificial ladle for a mortal in a Vedic ritual (yajña). And listen to these words of mine.
हिरण्यरेतसोऽम्भः स्यात्परिवर्तेत मेदिनी ।
भासं च न रविः कुर्यान्मत्सत्यं विचलेद्यदि ॥२५॥
25. hiraṇyaretaso'mbhaḥ syātparivarteta medinī ,
bhāsaṁ ca na raviḥ kuryānmatsatyaṁ vicaledyadi.
25. hiraṇyaretasaḥ ambhaḥ syāt parivarteta medinī
bhāsam ca na raviḥ kuryāt mat satyam vicalet yadi
25. If my truth were to waver, then the fiery essence might become water, the earth might be overturned, and the sun would not emit light.
बृहस्पतिवचः श्रुत्वा शक्रो विगतमत्सरः ।
प्रशस्यैनं विवेशाथ स्वमेव भवनं तदा ॥२६॥
26. bṛhaspativacaḥ śrutvā śakro vigatamatsaraḥ ,
praśasyainaṁ viveśātha svameva bhavanaṁ tadā.
26. bṛhaspativacaḥ śrutvā śakraḥ vigatamatsaraḥ
praśasya enam viveśa atha svam eva bhavanam tadā
26. Having heard the words of Bṛhaspati, Indra, who was then free from envy, praised him and entered his own palace.
