संजय उवाच ।
व्युष्टायां तु महाराज रजन्यां सर्वपार्थिवाः ।
पाण्डवा धार्तराष्ट्राश्च अभिजग्मुः पितामहम् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
vyuṣṭāyāṁ tu mahārāja rajanyāṁ sarvapārthivāḥ ,
pāṇḍavā dhārtarāṣṭrāśca abhijagmuḥ pitāmaham.

1. Saṃjaya said: "O great king, when the night had dawned, all the kings - the Pāṇḍavas and the Dhārtarāṣṭras - approached the grandfather (Bhīṣma)."
तं वीरशयने वीरं शयानं कुरुसत्तमम् ।
अभिवाद्योपतस्थुर्वै क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभम् ॥२॥
2. taṁ vīraśayane vīraṁ śayānaṁ kurusattamam ,
abhivādyopatasthurvai kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabham.
2. tam vīra-śayane vīram śayānam kuru-sattamam
abhivādya upatasthuḥ vai kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriya-ṛṣabham
2. kṣatriyāḥ tam vīram vīra-śayane śayānam kuru-sattamam

2. Having saluted that hero (Bhīṣma), the greatest among the Kurus and the foremost among warriors, who lay on the bed of heroes, the warriors (kṣatriyas) indeed stood by him.
कन्याश्चन्दनचूर्णैश्च लाजैर्माल्यैश्च सर्वशः ।
स्त्रियो बालास्तथा वृद्धाः प्रेक्षकाश्च पृथग्जनाः ।
समभ्ययुः शांतनवं भूतानीव तमोनुदम् ॥३॥
3. kanyāścandanacūrṇaiśca lājairmālyaiśca sarvaśaḥ ,
striyo bālāstathā vṛddhāḥ prekṣakāśca pṛthagjanāḥ ,
samabhyayuḥ śāṁtanavaṁ bhūtānīva tamonudam.
3. kanyāḥ candana-cūrṇaiḥ ca lājaiḥ mālyaiḥ
ca sarvaśaḥ striyaḥ bālāḥ tathā
vṛddhāḥ prekṣakāḥ ca pṛthak-janāḥ samabhyayuḥ
śāntanavam bhūtāni iva tamaḥ-nudam
3. kanyāḥ candana-cūrṇaiḥ ca lājaiḥ mālyaiḥ
ca sarvaśaḥ striyaḥ bālāḥ tathā
vṛddhāḥ ca pṛthak-janāḥ prekṣakāḥ bhūtāni
iva tamaḥ-nudam śāntanavam samabhyayuḥ
3. Maidens, with sandalwood powder, parched grain, and garlands from all sides, and women, children, the elderly, spectators, and common folk, all approached Śāntanu's son (Bhīṣma) just as living beings approach the dispeller of darkness.
तूर्याणि गणिका वारास्तथैव नटनर्तकाः ।
उपानृत्यञ्जगुश्चैव वृद्धं कुरुपितामहम् ॥४॥
4. tūryāṇi gaṇikā vārāstathaiva naṭanartakāḥ ,
upānṛtyañjaguścaiva vṛddhaṁ kurupitāmaham.
4. tūryāṇi gaṇikāḥ vārāḥ tathā eva naṭa-nartakāḥ
upānṛtyan jaguḥ ca eva vṛddham kuru-pitāmaham

4. Musical instruments, courtesans, female performers, as well as actors and male dancers, all danced near and sang for the aged Kuru grandfather (Bhīṣma).
उपारम्य च युद्धेभ्यः संनाहान्विप्रमुच्य च ।
आयुधानि च निक्षिप्य सहिताः कुरुपाण्डवाः ॥५॥
5. upāramya ca yuddhebhyaḥ saṁnāhānvipramucya ca ,
āyudhāni ca nikṣipya sahitāḥ kurupāṇḍavāḥ.

5. And having ceased from battles, having cast off their armaments, and having laid down their weapons, the Kurus and Pandavas, united...
अन्वासत दुराधर्षं देवव्रतमरिंदमम् ।
अन्योन्यं प्रीतिमन्तस्ते यथापूर्वं यथावयः ॥६॥
6. anvāsata durādharṣaṁ devavratamariṁdamam ,
anyonyaṁ prītimantaste yathāpūrvaṁ yathāvayaḥ.
6. anvāsat durādharṣam devavratam arindamam
anyonyam prītimantaḥ te yathāpūrvam yathāvayaḥ
6. te anyonyam prītimantaḥ yathāpūrvam yathāvayaḥ
durādharṣam arindamam devavratam anvāsat
6. They, being affectionate to each other, sat down around the unassailable, enemy-subduing Devavrata, just as before and according to their age.
सा पार्थिवशताकीर्णा समितिर्भीष्मशोभिता ।
शुशुभे भारती दीप्ता दिवीवादित्यमण्डलम् ॥७॥
7. sā pārthivaśatākīrṇā samitirbhīṣmaśobhitā ,
śuśubhe bhāratī dīptā divīvādityamaṇḍalam.
7. sā pārthivaśatākīrṇā samitiḥ bhīṣmaśobhitā
śuśubhe bhāratī dīptā divi iva ādityamaṇḍalam
7. sā pārthivaśatākīrṇā bhīṣmaśobhitā dīptā

7. That radiant Bhārata assembly, filled with hundreds of kings and graced by Bhīṣma, shone brightly, just like the disc of the sun in the sky.
विबभौ च नृपाणां सा पितामहमुपासताम् ।
देवानामिव देवेशं पितामहमुपासताम् ॥८॥
8. vibabhau ca nṛpāṇāṁ sā pitāmahamupāsatām ,
devānāmiva deveśaṁ pitāmahamupāsatām.
8. vibabhau ca nṛpāṇām sā pitāmaham upāsatām
devānām iva deveśam pitāmaham upāsatām
8. sā ca nṛpāṇām pitāmaham upāsatām vibabhau
devānām iva deveśam pitāmaham upāsatām
8. And that (assembly) shone for the kings who were attending the venerable grandfather (Bhīṣma), just as (it shines) for the gods attending the Lord of Gods and (the divine) Grandfather (Brahmā).
भीष्मस्तु वेदनां धैर्यान्निगृह्य भरतर्षभ ।
अभितप्तः शरैश्चैव नातिहृष्टमनाब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. bhīṣmastu vedanāṁ dhairyānnigṛhya bharatarṣabha ,
abhitaptaḥ śaraiścaiva nātihṛṣṭamanābravīt.
9. bhīṣmaḥ tu vedanām dhairyāt nigṛhya bharatarṣabha
abhitaptaḥ śaraiḥ ca eva na atihṛṣṭamanāḥ abravīt
9. bharatarṣabha bhīṣmaḥ tu dhairyāt vedanām nigṛhya
śaraiḥ ca eva abhitaptaḥ na atihṛṣṭamanāḥ abravīt
9. O best of Bharatas, Bhishma, though severely tormented by arrows, restrained his pain with great fortitude and spoke, his mind not at all cheerful.
शराभितप्तकायोऽहं शरसंतापमूर्छितः ।
पानीयमभिकाङ्क्षेऽहं राज्ञस्तान्प्रत्यभाषत ॥१०॥
10. śarābhitaptakāyo'haṁ śarasaṁtāpamūrchitaḥ ,
pānīyamabhikāṅkṣe'haṁ rājñastānpratyabhāṣata.
10. śarābhitaptakāyaḥ aham śarasaṃtāpamūrcchitaḥ
pānīyam abhikāṅkṣe aham rājñaḥ tān pratyabhāṣata
10. aham śarābhitaptakāyaḥ śarasaṃtāpamūrcchitaḥ
aham pānīyam abhikāṅkṣe tān rājñaḥ pratyabhāṣata
10. "My body is tormented by arrows, and I have fainted from the scorching pain of the arrows. I desire water," he said, speaking to those kings.
ततस्ते क्षत्रिया राजन्समाजह्रुः समन्ततः ।
भक्ष्यानुच्चावचांस्तत्र वारिकुम्भांश्च शीतलान् ॥११॥
11. tataste kṣatriyā rājansamājahruḥ samantataḥ ,
bhakṣyānuccāvacāṁstatra vārikumbhāṁśca śītalān.
11. tataḥ te kṣatriyāḥ rājan samājahruḥ samantataḥ
bhakṣyān uccāvacān tatra vārikumbhān ca śītalān
11. rājan tataḥ te kṣatriyāḥ samantataḥ tatra uccāvacān
bhakṣyān śītalān vārikumbhān ca samājahruḥ
11. Then, O King, those kshatriyas quickly brought from all directions a variety of foods, both rich and humble, along with cool pitchers of water.
उपनीतं च तद्दृष्ट्वा भीष्मः शांतनवोऽब्रवीत् ।
नाद्य तात मया शक्यं भोगान्कांश्चन मानुषान् ॥१२॥
12. upanītaṁ ca taddṛṣṭvā bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo'bravīt ,
nādya tāta mayā śakyaṁ bhogānkāṁścana mānuṣān.
12. upanītam ca tat dṛṣṭvā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ abravīt
na adya tāta mayā śakyam bhogān kāṃścana mānuṣān
12. bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ tat upanītam ca dṛṣṭvā abravīt
tāta adya mayā kāṃścana mānuṣān bhogān śakyam na
12. And seeing what had been brought near, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, said, "O dear one, today it is not possible for me to accept any human pleasures."
उपभोक्तुं मनुष्येभ्यः शरशय्यागतो ह्यहम् ।
प्रतीक्षमाणस्तिष्ठामि निवृत्तिं शशिसूर्ययोः ॥१३॥
13. upabhoktuṁ manuṣyebhyaḥ śaraśayyāgato hyaham ,
pratīkṣamāṇastiṣṭhāmi nivṛttiṁ śaśisūryayoḥ.
13. upabhoktum manuṣyebhyaḥ śaraśayyāgataḥ hi aham
| pratīkṣamāṇaḥ tiṣṭhāmi nivṛttiṃ śaśisūryayoḥ
13. aham śaraśayyāgataḥ hi manuṣyebhyaḥ upabhoktum
śaśisūryayoḥ nivṛttiṃ pratīkṣamāṇaḥ tiṣṭhāmi
13. Indeed, I, lying on a bed of arrows, remain here to experience [my final moments] for the benefit of humans, waiting for the passing of the moon and sun (i.e., the winter solstice).
एवमुक्त्वा शांतनवो दीनवाक्सर्वपार्थिवान् ।
धनंजयं महाबाहुमभ्यभाषत भारत ॥१४॥
14. evamuktvā śāṁtanavo dīnavāksarvapārthivān ,
dhanaṁjayaṁ mahābāhumabhyabhāṣata bhārata.
14. evam uktvā śāṃtanavaḥ dīnavāk sarvapārthivān
| dhanaṃjayaṃ mahābāhum abhyabhāṣata bhārata
14. bhārata evam uktvā śāṃtanavaḥ dīnavāk
sarvapārthivān mahābāhum dhanaṃjayaṃ abhyabhāṣata
14. Having thus spoken with a humble voice to all the kings, O Bharata, the son of Shantanu then addressed the mighty-armed Dhananjaya.
अथोपेत्य महाबाहुरभिवाद्य पितामहम् ।
अतिष्ठत्प्राञ्जलिः प्रह्वः किं करोमीति चाब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. athopetya mahābāhurabhivādya pitāmaham ,
atiṣṭhatprāñjaliḥ prahvaḥ kiṁ karomīti cābravīt.
15. atha upetya mahābāhuḥ abhivādya pitāmaham | atiṣṭhat
prāñjaliḥ prahvaḥ kim karomi iti ca abravīt
15. atha mahābāhuḥ pitāmaham upetya abhivādya prāñjaliḥ
prahvaḥ atiṣṭhat ca kim karomi iti abravīt
15. Then, the mighty-armed one (Arjuna), having approached and saluted the grandfather (Bhishma), stood with folded hands and humbly, and asked, 'What shall I do?'
तं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवं राजन्नभिवाद्याग्रतः स्थितम् ।
अभ्यभाषत धर्मात्मा भीष्मः प्रीतो धनंजयम् ॥१६॥
16. taṁ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavaṁ rājannabhivādyāgrataḥ sthitam ,
abhyabhāṣata dharmātmā bhīṣmaḥ prīto dhanaṁjayam.
16. tam dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavaṃ rājan abhivādya agrataḥ sthitam
| abhyabhāṣata dharmātmā bhīṣmaḥ prītaḥ dhanaṃjayam
16. rājan dharmātmā bhīṣmaḥ prītaḥ tam pāṇḍavaṃ abhivādya
agrataḥ sthitam dṛṣṭvā dhanaṃjayam abhyabhāṣata
16. O King, having seen that Pandava (Arjuna) standing before him after having saluted, Bhishma, whose soul was dedicated to natural law (dharma), delightfully addressed Dhananjaya.
दह्यतेऽदः शरीरं मे संस्यूतोऽस्मि महेषुभिः ।
मर्माणि परिदूयन्ते वदनं मम शुष्यति ॥१७॥
17. dahyate'daḥ śarīraṁ me saṁsyūto'smi maheṣubhiḥ ,
marmāṇi paridūyante vadanaṁ mama śuṣyati.
17. dahyate adaḥ śarīraṃ me saṃsyūtaḥ asmi maheṣubhiḥ
marmāṇi paridūyante vadanaṃ mama śuṣyati
17. me adaḥ śarīraṃ dahyate maheṣubhiḥ saṃsyūtaḥ
asmi marmāṇi paridūyante mama vadanaṃ śuṣyati
17. This body of mine is burning; I am pierced through by great arrows. My vital spots are greatly pained, and my mouth is drying up.
ह्लादनार्थं शरीरस्य प्रयच्छापो ममार्जुन ।
त्वं हि शक्तो महेष्वास दातुमम्भो यथाविधि ॥१८॥
18. hlādanārthaṁ śarīrasya prayacchāpo mamārjuna ,
tvaṁ hi śakto maheṣvāsa dātumambho yathāvidhi.
18. hlādanārthaṃ śarīrasya prayaccha āpaḥ mama arjuna
tvaṃ hi śaktaḥ maheṣvāsa dātuṃ ambho yathāvidhi
18. arjuna mama śarīrasya hlādanārthaṃ āpaḥ prayaccha
hi maheṣvāsa tvaṃ yathāvidhi ambho dātuṃ śaktaḥ
18. O Arjuna, give me water for the cooling of my body. Indeed, O great archer, you are capable of providing water properly (yathāvidhi).
अर्जुनस्तु तथेत्युक्त्वा रथमारुह्य वीर्यवान् ।
अधिज्यं बलवत्कृत्वा गाण्डीवं व्याक्षिपद्धनुः ॥१९॥
19. arjunastu tathetyuktvā rathamāruhya vīryavān ,
adhijyaṁ balavatkṛtvā gāṇḍīvaṁ vyākṣipaddhanuḥ.
19. arjunaḥ tu tathā iti uktvā rathaṃ āruhya vīryavān
adhijyaṃ balavat kṛtvā gāṇḍīvaṃ vyākṣipat dhanuḥ
19. tu vīryavān arjunaḥ tathā iti uktvā rathaṃ āruhya
gāṇḍīvaṃ dhanuḥ balavat adhijyaṃ kṛtvā vyākṣipat
19. But the valorous Arjuna, having said 'So be it!', mounted his chariot. Forcefully stringing his Gaṇḍīva bow, he drew it (back).
तस्य ज्यातलनिर्घोषं विस्फूर्जितमिवाशनेः ।
वित्रेसुः सर्वभूतानि श्रुत्वा सर्वे च पार्थिवाः ॥२०॥
20. tasya jyātalanirghoṣaṁ visphūrjitamivāśaneḥ ,
vitresuḥ sarvabhūtāni śrutvā sarve ca pārthivāḥ.
20. tasya jyātalanirghoṣaṃ visphūrjitaṃ iva aśaneḥ
vitresuḥ sarvabhūtāni śrutvā sarve ca pārthivāḥ
20. aśaneḥ visphūrjitaṃ iva tasya jyātalanirghoṣaṃ
śrutvā sarvabhūtāni ca sarve pārthivāḥ vitresuḥ
20. Having heard the sound of his bowstring, which was like a clap of thunder, all creatures and all kings were terrified.
ततः प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा रथेन रथिनां वरः ।
शयानं भरतश्रेष्ठं सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ pradakṣiṇaṁ kṛtvā rathena rathināṁ varaḥ ,
śayānaṁ bharataśreṣṭhaṁ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varam.
21. tataḥ pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā rathena rathinām varaḥ
śayānam bharataśreṣṭham sarvaśastrabṛtām varam
21. tataḥ rathinām varaḥ rathena pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā
śayānam bharataśreṣṭham sarvaśastrabṛtām varam
21. Then, the best among charioteers (Arjuna), having respectfully circumambulated by chariot the best of the Bharatas (Bhishma), who was lying (on the bed of arrows) and was the foremost among all weapon-bearers...
संधाय च शरं दीप्तमभिमन्त्र्य महायशाः ।
पर्जन्यास्त्रेण संयोज्य सर्वलोकस्य पश्यतः ।
अविध्यत्पृथिवीं पार्थः पार्श्वे भीष्मस्य दक्षिणे ॥२२॥
22. saṁdhāya ca śaraṁ dīptamabhimantrya mahāyaśāḥ ,
parjanyāstreṇa saṁyojya sarvalokasya paśyataḥ ,
avidhyatpṛthivīṁ pārthaḥ pārśve bhīṣmasya dakṣiṇe.
22. saṃdhāya ca śaram dīptam abhimantrya
mahāyaśāḥ parjanyāstreṇa saṃyojya
sarvalokasya paśyataḥ avidhyat
pṛthivīm pārthaḥ pārśve bhīṣmasya dakṣiṇe
22. ca mahāyaśāḥ pārthaḥ dīptam śaram
saṃdhāya abhimantrya parjanyāstreṇa
saṃyojya sarvalokasya paśyataḥ
bhīṣmasya dakṣiṇe pārśve pṛthivīm avidhyat
22. And the greatly renowned Partha (Arjuna), having fitted a blazing arrow (to his bow), having consecrated it with mantras, and having imbued it with the Parjanya missile (astra), pierced the earth on Bhishma's right side, while all people watched.
उत्पपात ततो धारा विमला वारिणः शिवा ।
शीतस्यामृतकल्पस्य दिव्यगन्धरसस्य च ॥२३॥
23. utpapāta tato dhārā vimalā vāriṇaḥ śivā ,
śītasyāmṛtakalpasya divyagandharasasya ca.
23. utpapāta tataḥ dhārā vimalā vāriṇaḥ śivā
śītasya amṛtakalpasya divyagandharasasya ca
23. tataḥ vimalā śivā dhārā śītasya amṛtakalpasya
divyagandharasasya ca vāriṇaḥ utpapāta
23. Then, from there, a pure, auspicious stream of cold water, resembling nectar and possessing divine fragrance and taste, sprang forth.
अतर्पयत्ततः पार्थः शीतया वारिधारया ।
भीष्मं कुरूणामृषभं दिव्यकर्मपराक्रमः ॥२४॥
24. atarpayattataḥ pārthaḥ śītayā vāridhārayā ,
bhīṣmaṁ kurūṇāmṛṣabhaṁ divyakarmaparākramaḥ.
24. atarpayat tataḥ pārthaḥ śītayā vāridhārayā
bhīṣmam kurūṇām ṛṣabham divyakarmaparākramaḥ
24. tataḥ divyakarmaparākramaḥ pārthaḥ śītayā
vāridhārayā kurūṇām ṛṣabham bhīṣmam atarpayat
24. Then, Partha (Arjuna), whose deeds and valor were divine, satisfied Bhishma, the best (ṛṣabha) among the Kurus, with that cold stream of water.
कर्मणा तेन पार्थस्य शक्रष्येव विकुर्वतः ।
विस्मयं परमं जग्मुस्ततस्ते वसुधाधिपाः ॥२५॥
25. karmaṇā tena pārthasya śakraṣyeva vikurvataḥ ,
vismayaṁ paramaṁ jagmustataste vasudhādhipāḥ.
25. karmaṇā tena pārthasya śakrasya iva vikurvataḥ
vismayam paramam jagmuḥ tataḥ te vasudhādhipāḥ
25. tataḥ te vasudhādhipāḥ śakrasya iva vikurvataḥ
pārthasya tena karmaṇā paramam vismayam jagmuḥ
25. Because of that action (karma) of Pārtha, who was performing feats like Indra, those kings then experienced great astonishment.
तत्कर्म प्रेक्ष्य बीभत्सोरतिमानुषमद्भुतम् ।
संप्रावेपन्त कुरवो गावः शीतार्दिता इव ॥२६॥
26. tatkarma prekṣya bībhatsoratimānuṣamadbhutam ,
saṁprāvepanta kuravo gāvaḥ śītārditā iva.
26. tat karma prekṣya bībhatsoḥ atimānuṣam adbhutam
saṃprāvepanta kuravaḥ gāvaḥ śītārditāḥ iva
26. bībhatsoḥ tat atimānuṣam adbhutam karma prekṣya
kuravaḥ śītārditāḥ gāvaḥ iva saṃprāvepanta
26. Observing that extraordinary and superhuman action (karma) of Bībhatsu (Arjuna), the Kurus greatly trembled, just like cows distressed by the cold.
विस्मयाच्चोत्तरीयाणि व्याविध्यन्सर्वतो नृपाः ।
शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैस्तुमुलं सर्वतोऽभवत् ॥२७॥
27. vismayāccottarīyāṇi vyāvidhyansarvato nṛpāḥ ,
śaṅkhadundubhinirghoṣaistumulaṁ sarvato'bhavat.
27. vismayāt ca uttarīyāṇi vyāvidhyan sarvataḥ nṛpāḥ
śaṅkhadundubhininirghoṣaiḥ tumulam sarvataḥ abhavat
27. ca vismayāt nṛpāḥ sarvataḥ uttarīyāṇi vyāvidhyan
sarvataḥ śaṅkhadundubhininirghoṣaiḥ tumulam abhavat
27. And due to astonishment, the kings cast off their upper garments everywhere. A tumultuous sound of conches and drums arose all around.
तृप्तः शांतनवश्चापि राजन्बीभत्सुमब्रवीत् ।
सर्वपार्थिववीराणां संनिधौ पूजयन्निव ॥२८॥
28. tṛptaḥ śāṁtanavaścāpi rājanbībhatsumabravīt ,
sarvapārthivavīrāṇāṁ saṁnidhau pūjayanniva.
28. tṛptaḥ śāntanavaḥ ca api rājan bībhatsum abravīt
sarvapārthivavīrāṇām sannidhau pūjayan iva

ca api tṛptaḥ śāntanavaḥ sarvapārthivavīrāṇām sannidhau bībhatsum pūjayan iva abravīt
28. And the contented son of Śāntanu (Bhīṣma), O King, spoke to Bībhatsu (Arjuna), as if showing him respect, in the presence of all the royal warriors.
नैतच्चित्रं महाबाहो त्वयि कौरवनन्दन ।
कथितो नारदेनासि पूर्वर्षिरमितद्युतिः ॥२९॥
29. naitaccitraṁ mahābāho tvayi kauravanandana ,
kathito nāradenāsi pūrvarṣiramitadyutiḥ.
29. na etat citram mahābāho tvayi kauravanandana
kathitaḥ nāradena asi pūrvarṣiḥ amitadyutiḥ
29. mahābāho kauravanandana tvayi etat citram na [asti].

29. O mighty-armed one, O delight of the Kurus, this is no wonder in you, for you have been spoken of by Narada as an ancient sage (ṛṣi) of immeasurable splendor.
वासुदेवसहायस्त्वं महत्कर्म करिष्यसि ।
यन्नोत्सहति देवेन्द्रः सह देवैरपि ध्रुवम् ॥३०॥
30. vāsudevasahāyastvaṁ mahatkarma kariṣyasi ,
yannotsahati devendraḥ saha devairapi dhruvam.
30. vāsudevasahāyaḥ tvam mahat karma kariṣyasi yat
na utsahati devendraḥ saha devaiḥ api dhruvam
30. tvam vāsudevasahāyaḥ [san] mahat karma kariṣyasi yat [karma] devendraḥ api devaiḥ saha dhruvam na utsahati.
30. You, aided by Vasudeva, will certainly accomplish a great deed (karma) that even Indra, the lord of gods, cannot achieve, even with the help of other deities.
विदुस्त्वां निधनं पार्थ सर्वक्षत्रस्य तद्विदः ।
धनुर्धराणामेकस्त्वं पृथिव्यां प्रवरो नृषु ॥३१॥
31. vidustvāṁ nidhanaṁ pārtha sarvakṣatrasya tadvidaḥ ,
dhanurdharāṇāmekastvaṁ pṛthivyāṁ pravaro nṛṣu.
31. viduḥ tvām nidhanam pārtha sarvakṣatrasya tadvidaḥ
dhanurdharāṇām ekaḥ tvam pṛthivyām pravaraḥ nṛṣu
31. pārtha tadvidaḥ tvām sarvakṣatrasya nidhanam viduḥ [ca] tvam pṛthivyām dhanurdharāṇām ekaḥ nṛṣu pravaraḥ [asi].
31. O Partha, those who understand this know you as the destroyer of all warriors (kṣatriya). You are the foremost among archers and the most excellent among men on earth.
मनुष्या जगति श्रेष्ठाः पक्षिणां गरुडो वरः ।
सरसां सागरः श्रेष्ठो गौर्वरिष्ठा चतुष्पदाम् ॥३२॥
32. manuṣyā jagati śreṣṭhāḥ pakṣiṇāṁ garuḍo varaḥ ,
sarasāṁ sāgaraḥ śreṣṭho gaurvariṣṭhā catuṣpadām.
32. manuṣyāḥ jagati śreṣṭhāḥ pakṣiṇām garuḍaḥ varaḥ

32. jagati manuṣyāḥ śreṣṭhāḥ; pakṣiṇām garuḍaḥ varaḥ; sarasām sāgaraḥ śreṣṭhaḥ; catuṣpadām gauḥ variṣṭhā [ca asti].
32. Among beings in the world, humans are the foremost; among birds, Garuda is the most excellent; among bodies of water, the ocean is the greatest; and among four-footed animals, the cow is supreme.
आदित्यस्तेजसां श्रेष्ठो गिरीणां हिमवान्वरः ।
जातीनां ब्राह्मणः श्रेष्ठः श्रेष्ठस्त्वमसि धन्विनाम् ॥३३॥
33. ādityastejasāṁ śreṣṭho girīṇāṁ himavānvaraḥ ,
jātīnāṁ brāhmaṇaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhastvamasi dhanvinām.
33. ādityaḥ tejasām śreṣṭhaḥ girīṇām himavān varaḥ
jātīnām brāhmaṇaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ tvam asi dhanvinām
33. ādityaḥ tejasām śreṣṭhaḥ himavān girīṇām varaḥ

33. The Sun (āditya) is the best among luminous objects; the Himalayas (himavān) are supreme among mountains. The brahmin is superior among species (jāti), and you are the best among archers.
न वै श्रुतं धार्तराष्ट्रेण वाक्यं संबोध्यमानं विदुरेण चैव ।
द्रोणेन रामेण जनार्दनेन मुहुर्मुहुः संजयेनापि चोक्तम् ॥३४॥
34. na vai śrutaṁ dhārtarāṣṭreṇa vākyaṁ; saṁbodhyamānaṁ vidureṇa caiva ,
droṇena rāmeṇa janārdanena; muhurmuhuḥ saṁjayenāpi coktam.
34. na vai śrutam dhārtarāṣṭreṇa vākyam
sambodhyamānam vidureṇa ca

34. Indeed, the counsel, though repeatedly given and being instructed by Vidura, Drona, Rama, Janardana (Kṛṣṇa), and also Sanjaya, was not heeded by Duryodhana (dhārtarāṣṭra).
परीतबुद्धिर्हि विसंज्ञकल्पो दुर्योधनो नाभ्यनन्दद्वचो मे ।
स शेष्यते वै निहतश्चिराय शास्त्रातिगो भीमबलाभिभूतः ॥३५॥
35. parītabuddhirhi visaṁjñakalpo; duryodhano nābhyanandadvaco me ,
sa śeṣyate vai nihataścirāya; śāstrātigo bhīmabalābhibhūtaḥ.
35. parītabuddhiḥ hi visaṃjñakalpaḥ
duryodhanaḥ na abhyanandat vacaḥ
me saḥ śeṣyate vai nihataḥ cirāya

35. Indeed, Duryodhana, whose mind was bewildered and who was almost senseless, did not welcome my words. He, the transgressor of scriptures, overcome by Bhima's strength, will surely lie slain for a long time.
ततः श्रुत्वा तद्वचः कौरवेन्द्रो दुर्योधनो दीनमना बभूव ।
तमब्रवीच्छांतनवोऽभिवीक्ष्य निबोध राजन्भव वीतमन्युः ॥३६॥
36. tataḥ śrutvā tadvacaḥ kauravendro; duryodhano dīnamanā babhūva ,
tamabravīcchāṁtanavo'bhivīkṣya; nibodha rājanbhava vītamanyuḥ.

36. Then, having heard those words, Duryodhana, the lord of the Kurus, became disheartened. Having observed him, Bhishma (śāntanava), the son of Shantanu, spoke to him: "Listen, O King, and be free from anger."
दृष्टं दुर्योधनेदं ते यथा पार्थेन धीमता ।
जलस्य धारा जनिता शीतस्यामृतगन्धिनः ।
एतस्य कर्ता लोकेऽस्मिन्नान्यः कश्चन विद्यते ॥३७॥
37. dṛṣṭaṁ duryodhanedaṁ te yathā pārthena dhīmatā ,
jalasya dhārā janitā śītasyāmṛtagandhinaḥ ,
etasya kartā loke'sminnānyaḥ kaścana vidyate.
37. dṛṣṭam duryodhana idam te yathā
pārthna dhīmatā jalasya dhārā janitā
śītasya amṛtagandhinaḥ etasya kartā
loke asmin na anyaḥ kaścana vidyate

37. O Duryodhana, you have seen this, how by the intelligent Pārtha (Arjuna) a stream of cool, ambrosia-scented water was generated. No one else in this world is capable of creating this.
आग्नेयं वारुणं सौम्यं वायव्यमथ वैष्णवम् ।
ऐन्द्रं पाशुपतं ब्राह्मं पारमेष्ठ्यं प्रजापतेः ।
धातुस्त्वष्टुश्च सवितुर्दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः ॥३८॥
38. āgneyaṁ vāruṇaṁ saumyaṁ vāyavyamatha vaiṣṇavam ,
aindraṁ pāśupataṁ brāhmaṁ pārameṣṭhyaṁ prajāpateḥ ,
dhātustvaṣṭuśca saviturdivyānyastrāṇi sarvaśaḥ.
38. āgneyaṃ vāruṇaṃ saumyaṃ vāyavyam atha
vaiṣṇavam aindraṃ pāśupataṃ brāhmaṃ
pārameṣṭhyaṃ prajāpateḥ dhātuḥ tvaṣṭuḥ
ca savituḥ divyāni astrāṇi sarvaśaḥ
38. prajāpateḥ pārameṣṭhyaṃ dhātuḥ tvaṣṭuḥ
ca savituḥ āgneyaṃ vāruṇaṃ saumyaṃ
vāyavyam atha vaiṣṇavam aindraṃ pāśupataṃ
brāhmaṃ divyāni astrāṇi sarvaśaḥ
38. All these divine weapons, belonging to Agni, Varuṇa, Soma, Vāyu, and then to Viṣṇu; to Indra, Paśupati, Brahmā, and Prajāpati (the supreme lord); and to Dhātā, Tvaṣṭā, and Savitā.
सर्वस्मिन्मानुषे लोके वेत्त्येको हि धनंजयः ।
कृष्णो वा देवकीपुत्रो नान्यो वै वेद कश्चन ।
न शक्याः पाण्डवास्तात युद्धे जेतुं कथंचन ॥३९॥
39. sarvasminmānuṣe loke vettyeko hi dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
kṛṣṇo vā devakīputro nānyo vai veda kaścana ,
na śakyāḥ pāṇḍavāstāta yuddhe jetuṁ kathaṁcana.
39. sarvasmin mānuṣe loke vetti ekaḥ hi
dhanaṃjayaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ vā devakīputraḥ na
anyaḥ vai veda kaścana na śakyāḥ
pāṇḍavāḥ tāta yuddhe jetuṃ kathaṃcana
39. hi sarvasmin mānuṣe loke ekaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
vā devakīputraḥ kṛṣṇaḥ vetti
vai anyaḥ kaścana na veda tāta yuddhe
pāṇḍavāḥ kathaṃcana jetuṃ na śakyāḥ
39. Indeed, in the entire human world, only Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna) knows this, or Kṛṣṇa, the son of Devakī. No one else truly knows it. O dear one, the Pāṇḍavas cannot be defeated in battle by any means.
अमानुषाणि कर्माणि यस्यैतानि महात्मनः ।
तेन सत्त्ववता संख्ये शूरेणाहवशोभिना ।
कृतिना समरे राजन्संधिस्ते तात युज्यताम् ॥४०॥
40. amānuṣāṇi karmāṇi yasyaitāni mahātmanaḥ ,
tena sattvavatā saṁkhye śūreṇāhavaśobhinā ,
kṛtinā samare rājansaṁdhiste tāta yujyatām.
40. amānuṣāṇi karmāṇi yasya etāni
mahātmanaḥ tena sattvavatā saṃkhye
śūreṇa āhavanaśobhinā kṛtinā
samare rājan sandhiḥ te tāta yujyatām

40. O King, since these superhuman deeds (karma) belong to that great-souled one, therefore, O dear one, let a peace treaty (sandhi) be made with him - that heroic, valorous, and accomplished one who shines brilliantly in battle.
यावत्कृष्णो महाबाहुः स्वाधीनः कुरुसंसदि ।
तावत्पार्थेन शूरेण संधिस्ते तात युज्यताम् ॥४१॥
41. yāvatkṛṣṇo mahābāhuḥ svādhīnaḥ kurusaṁsadi ,
tāvatpārthena śūreṇa saṁdhiste tāta yujyatām.
41. yāvat kṛṣṇaḥ mahābāhuḥ svādhīnaḥ kurusaṃsadi
tāvat pārhena śūreṇa sandhiḥ te tāta yujyatām
41. tāta yāvat mahābāhuḥ kṛṣṇaḥ kurusaṃsadi svādhīnaḥ
tāvat te śūreṇa pārhena sandhiḥ yujyatām
41. As long as the mighty-armed Krishna (Kṛṣṇa) remains influential in the assembly of the Kurus, O father, let a peace treaty (sandhi) be concluded with the brave Arjuna (Pārtha).
यावच्चमूं न ते शेषां शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ।
नाशयत्यर्जुनस्तावत्संधिस्ते तात युज्यताम् ॥४२॥
42. yāvaccamūṁ na te śeṣāṁ śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ ,
nāśayatyarjunastāvatsaṁdhiste tāta yujyatām.
42. yāvat camūm na te śeṣām śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ
nāśayati arjunaḥ tāvat sandhiḥ te tāta yujyatām
42. tāta yāvat arjunaḥ te śeṣām camūm saṃnataparvabhiḥ
śaraiḥ na nāśayati tāvat te sandhiḥ yujyatām
42. O father, as long as Arjuna (Arjuna) does not destroy your remaining army with arrows whose shafts are bent (from being drawn taut), until then, let a peace treaty (sandhi) be concluded for you.
यावत्तिष्ठन्ति समरे हतशेषाः सहोदराः ।
नृपाश्च बहवो राजंस्तावत्संधिः प्रयुज्यताम् ॥४३॥
43. yāvattiṣṭhanti samare hataśeṣāḥ sahodarāḥ ,
nṛpāśca bahavo rājaṁstāvatsaṁdhiḥ prayujyatām.
43. yāvat tiṣṭhanti samare hataśeṣāḥ sahudarāḥ
nṛpāḥ ca bahavaḥ rājan tāvat sandhiḥ prayujyatām
43. rājan yāvat samare hataśeṣāḥ sahudarāḥ ca
bahavaḥ nṛpāḥ tiṣṭhanti tāvat sandhiḥ prayujyatām
43. O King, as long as your remaining brothers and many other kings still stand in battle, until then, let a peace treaty (sandhi) be established.
न निर्दहति ते यावत्क्रोधदीप्तेक्षणश्चमूम् ।
युधिष्ठिरो हि तावद्वै संधिस्ते तात युज्यताम् ॥४४॥
44. na nirdahati te yāvatkrodhadīptekṣaṇaścamūm ,
yudhiṣṭhiro hi tāvadvai saṁdhiste tāta yujyatām.
44. na nirdahati te yāvat krodhadīptekṣaṇaḥ camūm
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ hi tāvat vai sandhiḥ te tāta yujyatām
44. tāta yāvat krodhadīptekṣaṇaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ te camūm
na nirdahati hi tāvat vai te sandhiḥ yujyatām
44. O father, as long as Yudhiṣṭhira, whose eyes blaze with wrath, does not completely consume your army, indeed, until then, let a peace treaty (sandhi) be concluded for you.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः ।
यावच्चमूं महाराज नाशयन्ति न सर्वशः ।
तावत्ते पाण्डवैः सार्धं सौभ्रात्रं तात रोचताम् ॥४५॥
45. nakulaḥ sahadevaśca bhīmasenaśca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
yāvaccamūṁ mahārāja nāśayanti na sarvaśaḥ ,
tāvatte pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ saubhrātraṁ tāta rocatām.
45. nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca bhīmasenaḥ ca
pāṇḍavaḥ yāvat camūm mahārāja
nāśayanti na sarvaśaḥ tāvat te pāṇḍavaiḥ
sārdham saubhrātram tāta rocatām
45. mahārāja tāta yāvat nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca bhīmasenaḥ ca pāṇḍavaḥ camūm sarvaśaḥ na nāśayanti,
tāvat te pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham saubhrātram rocatām
45. O great king, as long as Nakula, Sahadeva, and Bhīmasena, the Pāṇḍavas, have not entirely destroyed your army, until then, dear one, let good relations with the Pāṇḍavas be agreeable to you.
युद्धं मदन्तमेवास्तु तात संशाम्य पाण्डवैः ।
एतत्ते रोचतां वाक्यं यदुक्तोऽसि मयानघ ।
एतत्क्षेममहं मन्ये तव चैव कुलस्य च ॥४६॥
46. yuddhaṁ madantamevāstu tāta saṁśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
etatte rocatāṁ vākyaṁ yadukto'si mayānagha ,
etatkṣemamahaṁ manye tava caiva kulasya ca.
46. yuddham madantam eva astu tāta saṃśāmya
pāṇḍavaiḥ etat te rocatām vākyam
yat uktaḥ asi mayā anagha etat kṣemam
aham manye tava ca eva kulasya ca
46. tāta yuddham madantam eva astu,
pāṇḍavaiḥ saṃśāmya.
anagha mayā yat te uktaḥ asi etat vākyam rocatām.

46. Dear one, let this war indeed end with me, so make peace with the Pāṇḍavas. O sinless one, let this statement which I have spoken to you be agreeable. I consider this to be for your welfare and for that of your family.
त्यक्त्वा मन्युमुपशाम्यस्व पार्थैः पर्याप्तमेतद्यत्कृतं फल्गुनेन ।
भीष्मस्यान्तादस्तु वः सौहृदं वा संप्रश्लेषः साधु राजन्प्रसीद ॥४७॥
47. tyaktvā manyumupaśāmyasva pārthaiḥ; paryāptametadyatkṛtaṁ phalgunena ,
bhīṣmasyāntādastu vaḥ sauhṛdaṁ vā; saṁpraśleṣaḥ sādhu rājanprasīda.
47. tyaktvā manyum upaśāmyasva pārthaiḥ
paryāptam etat yat kṛtam phalgunena
bhīṣmasya antāt astu vaḥ sauhṛdam
vā saṃpraśleṣaḥ sādhu rājan prasīda

47. Abandon your wrath and calm yourself. What has been done by Arjuna towards the Pāṇḍavas is sufficient. Let there be friendship or reconciliation for you (all) after Bhīṣma's demise. O king, be gracious; this is good!
राज्यस्यार्धं दीयतां पाण्डवानामिन्द्रप्रस्थं धर्मराजोऽनुशास्तु ।
मा मित्रध्रुक्पार्थिवानां जघन्यः पापां कीर्तिं प्राप्स्यसे कौरवेन्द्र ॥४८॥
48. rājyasyārdhaṁ dīyatāṁ pāṇḍavānā;mindraprasthaṁ dharmarājo'nuśāstu ,
mā mitradhrukpārthivānāṁ jaghanyaḥ; pāpāṁ kīrtiṁ prāpsyase kauravendra.
48. rājyasya ardham dīyatām pāṇḍavānām
indraprastham dharmarājaḥ anuśāstu

48. Let half the kingdom be given to the Pāṇḍavas. Let Dharmarāja, the king of righteousness (dharma), rule Indraprastha. O chief of the Kauravas, do not, as a betrayer of friends, the most despicable among kings, acquire an evil reputation.
ममावसानाच्छान्तिरस्तु प्रजानां संगच्छन्तां पार्थिवाः प्रीतिमन्तः ।
पिता पुत्रं मातुलं भागिनेयो भ्राता चैव भ्रातरं प्रैतु राजन् ॥४९॥
49. mamāvasānācchāntirastu prajānāṁ; saṁgacchantāṁ pārthivāḥ prītimantaḥ ,
pitā putraṁ mātulaṁ bhāgineyo; bhrātā caiva bhrātaraṁ praitu rājan.
49. mama avasanāt śāntiḥ astu prajānām
saṃgacchantām pārthivāḥ prītimantaḥ

49. May peace prevail among the people (prajā) upon my passing. May the rulers, filled with affection, come together. O King, may a father approach his son, a nephew his maternal uncle, and a brother approach his brother.
न चेदेवं प्राप्तकालं वचो मे मोहाविष्टः प्रतिपत्स्यस्यबुद्ध्या ।
भीष्मस्यान्तादेतदन्ताः स्थ सर्वे सत्यामेतां भारतीमीरयामि ॥५०॥
50. na cedevaṁ prāptakālaṁ vaco me; mohāviṣṭaḥ pratipatsyasyabuddhyā ,
bhīṣmasyāntādetadantāḥ stha sarve; satyāmetāṁ bhāratīmīrayāmi.
50. na cet evam prāptakālam vacaḥ me
mohāviṣṭaḥ pratipatsyasi abuddhyā
| bhīṣmasya antāt etatantāḥ stha
sarve satyām etām bhāratīm īrayāmi
50. na cet mohāviṣṭaḥ abuddhyā me prāptakālam vacaḥ evam pratipatsyasi,
bhīṣmasya antāt sarve etatantāḥ stha.

50. If you, overcome by delusion (moha) and acting without wisdom, do not accept these timely words of mine in this way, then all of you will meet your end after Bhishma's end. I speak this truth.
एतद्वाक्यं सौहृदादापगेयो मध्ये राज्ञां भारतं श्रावयित्वा ।
तूष्णीमासीच्छल्यसंतप्तमर्मा यत्वात्मानं वेदनां संनिगृह्य ॥५१॥
51. etadvākyaṁ sauhṛdādāpageyo; madhye rājñāṁ bhārataṁ śrāvayitvā ,
tūṣṇīmāsīcchalyasaṁtaptamarmā; yatvātmānaṁ vedanāṁ saṁnigṛhya.
51. etat vākyam sauhṛdāt āpageyaḥ
madhye rājñām bhāratam śrāvayitvā
| tūṣṇīm āsīt śalyasaṃtaptamarmā
yatvā ātmānam vedanām saṃnigṛhya
51. sauhṛdāt āpageyaḥ rājñām madhye etat bhāratam vākyam śrāvayitvā tūṣṇīm āsīt.
śalyasaṃtaptamarmā (saḥ) ātmānam (ca) vedanām yatvā saṃnigṛhya (āsīt).
51. Having, out of affection, made this Bharata discourse heard among the kings, Apageya (Bhīṣma) then fell silent. He, whose vital organs were tormented by arrows (śalya), had carefully restrained his own self and firmly controlled his pain (vedanā).
