वैशंपायन उवाच ।

1. Vaiśampāyana said: "Then, Madhusūdana (Madhusūdana), having entered the palace and fallen asleep, awoke when only a quarter of the night remained."
स ध्यानपथमाश्रित्य सर्वज्ञानानि माधवः ।
अवलोक्य ततः पश्चाद्दध्यौ ब्रह्म सनातनम् ॥२॥
2. sa dhyānapathamāśritya sarvajñānāni mādhavaḥ ,
avalokya tataḥ paścāddadhyau brahma sanātanam.

2. He, Mādhava (Mādhava), having resorted to the path of meditation (dhyāna), and having perceived all knowledge, then afterwards meditated on the eternal Brahman (brahman).
ततः श्रुतिपुराणज्ञाः शिक्षिता रक्तकण्ठिनः ।
अस्तुवन्विश्वकर्माणं वासुदेवं प्रजापतिम् ॥३॥
3. tataḥ śrutipurāṇajñāḥ śikṣitā raktakaṇṭhinaḥ ,
astuvanviśvakarmāṇaṁ vāsudevaṁ prajāpatim.

3. Then, those knowledgeable in sacred texts (śruti) and Puranas, well-trained and possessing melodious voices, praised Viśvakarman, Vāsudeva, and Prajāpati.
पठन्ति पाणिस्वनिकास्तथा गायन्ति गायनाः ।
शङ्खानकमृदङ्गांश्च प्रवाद्यन्त सहस्रशः ॥४॥
4. paṭhanti pāṇisvanikāstathā gāyanti gāyanāḥ ,
śaṅkhānakamṛdaṅgāṁśca pravādyanta sahasraśaḥ.
4. paṭhanti pāṇi-svanikāḥ tathā gāyanti gāyanāḥ
śaṅkha-ānaka-mṛdaṅgān ca pravādyanta sahasraśaḥ

4. Those who clap hands or drum (pāṇi-svanikāḥ) recited, and singers sang. Thousands of conches, kettledrums, and mṛdaṅgas were played.
वीणापणववेणूनां स्वनश्चातिमनोरमः ।
प्रहास इव विस्तीर्णः शुश्रुवे तस्य वेश्मनः ॥५॥
5. vīṇāpaṇavaveṇūnāṁ svanaścātimanoramaḥ ,
prahāsa iva vistīrṇaḥ śuśruve tasya veśmanaḥ.
5. vīṇā-paṇava-veṇūnām svanaḥ ca ati-manoramaḥ
prahāsaḥ iva vistīrṇaḥ śuśruve tasya veśmanaḥ

5. And the extremely delightful sound of lutes (vīṇā), paṇavas, and flutes (veṇu), widespread like a burst of joy, was heard from his dwelling.
तथा युधिष्ठिरस्यापि राज्ञो मङ्गलसंहिताः ।
उच्चेरुर्मधुरा वाचो गीतवादित्रसंहिताः ॥६॥
6. tathā yudhiṣṭhirasyāpi rājño maṅgalasaṁhitāḥ ,
uccerurmadhurā vāco gītavāditrasaṁhitāḥ.
6. tathā yudhiṣṭhirasya api rājñaḥ maṅgala-saṃhitāḥ
ucceruḥ madhurāḥ vācaḥ gīta-vāditra-saṃhitāḥ

6. Similarly, sweet and auspicious voices, accompanied by songs and instrumental music, rose for King Yudhiṣṭhira as well.
तत उत्थाय दाशार्हः स्नातः प्राञ्जलिरच्युतः ।
जप्त्वा गुह्यं महाबाहुरग्नीनाश्रित्य तस्थिवान् ॥७॥
7. tata utthāya dāśārhaḥ snātaḥ prāñjaliracyutaḥ ,
japtvā guhyaṁ mahābāhuragnīnāśritya tasthivān.
7. tataḥ utthāya dāśārhaḥ snātaḥ prāñjaliḥ acyutaḥ
japtvā guhyam mahābāhuḥ agnīn āśritya tasthivān
7. tataḥ mahābāhuḥ dāśārhaḥ acyutaḥ utthāya snātaḥ

7. Then, the mighty-armed Krishna, the infallible one (Acyuta), a descendant of Daśārha, arose, bathed, and with folded hands. Having recited a secret incantation, he stood, taking refuge in the sacred fires.
ततः सहस्रं विप्राणां चतुर्वेदविदां तथा ।
गवां सहस्रेणैकैकं वाचयामास माधवः ॥८॥
8. tataḥ sahasraṁ viprāṇāṁ caturvedavidāṁ tathā ,
gavāṁ sahasreṇaikaikaṁ vācayāmāsa mādhavaḥ.
8. tataḥ sahasram viprāṇām caturvedavidām tathā
gavām sahasreṇa ekaikam vācayāmāsa mādhavaḥ

8. Then, Madhava (Krishna) gifted each of a thousand Brahmins, who were knowledgeable in the four Vedas, with a thousand cows.
मङ्गलालम्भनं कृत्वा आत्मानमवलोक्य च ।
आदर्शे विमले कृष्णस्ततः सात्यकिमब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. maṅgalālambhanaṁ kṛtvā ātmānamavalokya ca ,
ādarśe vimale kṛṣṇastataḥ sātyakimabravīt.
9. maṅgalālambhanam kṛtvā ātmānam avalokya ca
ādarśe vimale kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ sātyakim abravīt

9. Having performed auspicious rites and observed his own self (ātman) in a clear mirror, Krishna then spoke to Satyaki.
गच्छ शैनेय जानीहि गत्वा राजनिवेशनम् ।
अपि सज्जो महातेजा भीष्मं द्रष्टुं युथिष्ठिरः ॥१०॥
10. gaccha śaineya jānīhi gatvā rājaniveśanam ,
api sajjo mahātejā bhīṣmaṁ draṣṭuṁ yuthiṣṭhiraḥ.
10. gaccha śaineya jānīhi gatvā rājaniveśanam api
sajjaḥ mahātejā bhīṣmam draṣṭum yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
10. śaineya gaccha rājaniveśanam gatvā api mahātejā

10. “Go, O Śaineya (Satyaki), and after reaching the king's abode, ascertain if the greatly glorious Yudhishthira is ready to see Bhishma.”
ततः कृष्णस्य वचनात्सात्यकिस्त्वरितो ययौ ।
उपगम्य च राजानं युधिष्ठिरमुवाच ह ॥११॥
11. tataḥ kṛṣṇasya vacanātsātyakistvarito yayau ,
upagamya ca rājānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiramuvāca ha.
11. tataḥ kṛṣṇasya vacanāt sātyakiḥ tvaritaḥ yayau
upagamya ca rājānam yudhiṣṭhiram uvāca ha

11. Then, at Krishna's (Kṛṣṇa) command, Satyaki (Sātyaki) quickly went, and approaching King Yudhishthira (Yudhiṣṭhira), he spoke to him.
युक्तो रथवरो राजन्वासुदेवस्य धीमतः ।
समीपमापगेयस्य प्रयास्यति जनार्दनः ॥१२॥
12. yukto rathavaro rājanvāsudevasya dhīmataḥ ,
samīpamāpageyasya prayāsyati janārdanaḥ.
12. yuktaḥ rathavaraḥ rājan vāsudevasya dhīmataḥ
samīpam āpageyasya prayāsyati janārdanaḥ
12. rājan vāsudevasya dhīmataḥ rathavaraḥ yuktaḥ
janārdanaḥ āpageyasya samīpam prayāsyati
12. O King, the excellent chariot of the wise Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa) is prepared. Janardana (Kṛṣṇa) will go to the presence of the son of Ganga (Bhīṣma).
भवत्प्रतीक्षः कृष्णोऽसौ धर्मराज महाद्युते ।
यदत्रानन्तरं कृत्यं तद्भवान्कर्तुमर्हति ॥१३॥
13. bhavatpratīkṣaḥ kṛṣṇo'sau dharmarāja mahādyute ,
yadatrānantaraṁ kṛtyaṁ tadbhavānkartumarhati.
13. bhavatpratīkṣaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ asau dharmarāja mahādyute
yat atra anantaram kṛtyam tat bhavān kartum arhati
13. dharmarāja mahādyute asau kṛṣṇaḥ bhavatpratīkṣaḥ
atra yat anantaram kṛtyam tat bhavān kartum arhati
13. O King of Righteousness (dharma), of great splendor! That Krishna (Kṛṣṇa) is awaiting you. Whatever task is to be done immediately here, you should undertake it.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
युज्यतां मे रथवरः फल्गुनाप्रतिमद्युते ।
न सैनिकैश्च यातव्यं यास्यामो वयमेव हि ॥१४॥
14. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
yujyatāṁ me rathavaraḥ phalgunāpratimadyute ,
na sainikaiśca yātavyaṁ yāsyāmo vayameva hi.
14. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca yujyatām me rathavaraḥ phalgunāpratimadyute
na sainikaiḥ ca yātavyam yāsyāmaḥ vayam eva hi
14. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca phalgunāpratimadyute me rathavaraḥ
yujyatām ca sainikaiḥ na yātavyam vayam eva hi yāsyāmaḥ
14. Yudhishthira (Yudhiṣṭhira) said: "Let my excellent chariot be yoked, O Phalguna (Arjuna), you of unmatched splendor! And it should not be gone by soldiers; indeed, only we ourselves will go."
न च पीडयितव्यो मे भीष्मो धर्मभृतां वरः ।
अतः पुरःसराश्चापि निवर्तन्तु धनंजय ॥१५॥
15. na ca pīḍayitavyo me bhīṣmo dharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
ataḥ puraḥsarāścāpi nivartantu dhanaṁjaya.
15. na ca pīḍayitavyaḥ me bhīṣmaḥ dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
ataḥ puraḥsarāḥ ca api nivartantu dhanaṃjaya
15. dhanaṃjaya dharmabhṛtām varaḥ bhīṣmaḥ ca me na
pīḍayitavyaḥ ataḥ puraḥsarāḥ ca api nivartantu
15. And Bhishma, the best among the upholders of natural law (dharma), should not be tormented by me. Therefore, O Dhananjaya, let the vanguard also turn back.
अद्यप्रभृति गाङ्गेयः परं गुह्यं प्रवक्ष्यति ।
ततो नेच्छामि कौन्तेय पृथग्जनसमागमम् ॥१६॥
16. adyaprabhṛti gāṅgeyaḥ paraṁ guhyaṁ pravakṣyati ,
tato necchāmi kaunteya pṛthagjanasamāgamam.
16. adyaprabhṛti gāṅgeyaḥ param guhyam pravakṣyati
tataḥ na icchāmi kaunteya pṛthagjanasamāgamam
16. adyaprabhṛti gāṅgeyaḥ param guhyam pravakṣyati
tataḥ kaunteya pṛthagjanasamāgamam na icchāmi
16. From today onwards, the son of Ganga (Bhishma) will speak the supreme secret. Therefore, O son of Kunti, I do not wish for the assembly of common people.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्य तथा कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ।
युक्तं रथवरं तस्मा आचचक्षे नरर्षभ ॥१७॥
17. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tadvākyamākarṇya tathā kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
yuktaṁ rathavaraṁ tasmā ācacakṣe nararṣabha.
17. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tat vākyam ākarṇya tathā kuntīputraḥ
dhanaṃjayaḥ yuktam rathavaram tasmai ācacakshe nararṣabha
17. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca.
nararṣabha kuntīputraḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ tathā tat vākyam ākarṇya tasmai yuktam rathavaram ācacakshe
17. Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing those words, the son of Kunti (Arjuna), Dhananjaya, who was the best of men, then explained the properly harnessed excellent chariot to him.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा यमौ भीमार्जुनावपि ।
भूतानीव समस्तानि ययुः कृष्णनिवेशनम् ॥१८॥
18. tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā yamau bhīmārjunāvapi ,
bhūtānīva samastāni yayuḥ kṛṣṇaniveśanam.
18. tataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājā yamau bhīmārjunau api
bhūtāni iva samastāni yayuḥ kṛṣṇaniveśanam
18. tataḥ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ yamau bhīmārjunau api
samastāni bhūtāni iva kṛṣṇaniveśanam yayuḥ
18. Then King Yudhiṣṭhira, the two twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), and Bhima and Arjuna also went to Krishna's abode, just like all living beings (go to the universal controller).
आगच्छत्स्वथ कृष्णोऽपि पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ।
शैनेयसहितो धीमान्रथमेवान्वपद्यत ॥१९॥
19. āgacchatsvatha kṛṣṇo'pi pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu ,
śaineyasahito dhīmānrathamevānvapadyata.
19. āgacchatsu atha kṛṣṇaḥ api pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu
śaineyasahitaḥ dhīmān ratham eva anuapadyata
19. atha mahātmasu pāṇaveṣu āgacchatsu api dhīmān

19. As the great-souled Pāṇḍavas were approaching, the intelligent Krishna, accompanied by Śaineya, also mounted the chariot.
रथस्थाः संविदं कृत्वा सुखां पृष्ट्वा च शर्वरीम् ।
मेघघोषै रथवरैः प्रययुस्ते महारथाः ॥२०॥
20. rathasthāḥ saṁvidaṁ kṛtvā sukhāṁ pṛṣṭvā ca śarvarīm ,
meghaghoṣai rathavaraiḥ prayayuste mahārathāḥ.
20. rathasthāḥ saṃvidam kṛtvā sukhām pṛṣṭvā ca śarvarīm
meghaghoṣaiḥ rathavaraiḥ prayayuḥ te mahārathāḥ
20. rathasthāḥ te mahārathāḥ saṃvidam kṛtvā ca sukhām
śarvarīm pṛṣṭvā meghaghoṣaiḥ rathavaraiḥ prayayuḥ
20. Seated in their chariots, and having conversed and inquired about each other's comfortable night, those great warriors departed with their splendid chariots rumbling like thunderclouds.
मेघपुष्पं बलाहं च सैन्यं सुग्रीवमेव च ।
दारुकश्चोदयामास वासुदेवस्य वाजिनः ॥२१॥
21. meghapuṣpaṁ balāhaṁ ca sainyaṁ sugrīvameva ca ,
dārukaścodayāmāsa vāsudevasya vājinaḥ.
21. meghapuṣpam balāham ca sainyam sugrīvam eva
ca dārukaḥ codayām āsa vāsudevasya vājinaḥ

21. Dāruka then drove Vāsudeva's (Krishna's) horses - Meghapuṣpa, Balāha, Saiṃya, and Sugrīva - forward.
ते हया वासुदेवस्य दारुकेण प्रचोदिताः ।
गां खुराग्रैस्तथा राजँल्लिखन्तः प्रययुस्तदा ॥२२॥
22. te hayā vāsudevasya dārukeṇa pracoditāḥ ,
gāṁ khurāgraistathā rājaँllikhantaḥ prayayustadā.
22. te hayāḥ vāsudevasya dārukeṇa pracoditāḥ gām
khurāgraiḥ tathā rājan likhantaḥ prayayuḥ tadā
22. rājan tadā dārukeṇa pracoditāḥ te vāsudevasya

22. Impelled by Dāruka, those horses of Vāsudeva (Krishna) then departed, O King, scraping the earth with the tips of their hooves.
ते ग्रसन्त इवाकाशं वेगवन्तो महाबलाः ।
क्षेत्रं धर्मस्य कृत्स्नस्य कुरुक्षेत्रमवातरन् ॥२३॥
23. te grasanta ivākāśaṁ vegavanto mahābalāḥ ,
kṣetraṁ dharmasya kṛtsnasya kurukṣetramavātaran.
23. te grasantaḥ iva ākāśam vegavantaḥ mahābalāḥ
kṣetram dharmasya kṛtsnasya kurukṣetram avātaran
23. te vegavantaḥ mahābalāḥ ākāśam iva grasantaḥ
kṛtsnasya dharmasya kṣetram kurukṣetram avātaran
23. As if devouring the sky, they, swift and immensely powerful, descended upon Kurukshetra, the field of the entire natural law (dharma).
ततो ययुर्यत्र भीष्मः शरतल्पगतः प्रभुः ।
आस्ते ब्रह्मर्षिभिः सार्धं ब्रह्मा देवगणैर्यथा ॥२४॥
24. tato yayuryatra bhīṣmaḥ śaratalpagataḥ prabhuḥ ,
āste brahmarṣibhiḥ sārdhaṁ brahmā devagaṇairyathā.
24. tataḥ yayuḥ yatra bhīṣmaḥ śaratpalpagataḥ prabhuḥ
āste brahmarṣibhiḥ sārdham brahmā devagaṇaiḥ yathā
24. tataḥ yatra śaratpalpagataḥ prabhuḥ bhīṣmaḥ
brahmarṣibhiḥ sārdham āste yathā brahmā devagaṇaiḥ yayuḥ
24. Then they went to where the venerable Bhishma (prabhu), lying on a bed of arrows, was seated with the Brahmin sages, just as Brahma is seated with the hosts of gods.
ततोऽवतीर्य गोविन्दो रथात्स च युधिष्ठिरः ।
भीमो गाण्डीवधन्वा च यमौ सात्यकिरेव च ।
ऋषीनभ्यर्चयामासुः करानुद्यम्य दक्षिणान् ॥२५॥
25. tato'vatīrya govindo rathātsa ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhīmo gāṇḍīvadhanvā ca yamau sātyakireva ca ,
ṛṣīnabhyarcayāmāsuḥ karānudyamya dakṣiṇān.
25. tataḥ avatīrya govindaḥ rathāt saḥ
ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bhīmaḥ gāṇḍīvadhanvā
ca yamau sātyakiḥ eva ca ṛṣīn
abhyarcayāmāsuḥ karān udyamya dakṣiṇān
25. tataḥ govindaḥ ca saḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
rathāt avatīrya bhīmaḥ gāṇḍīvadhanvā
ca yamau ca sātyakiḥ eva ca dakṣiṇān
karān udyamya ṛṣīn abhyarcayāmāsuḥ
25. Then, having dismounted from the chariot, Govinda (Krishna) and Yudhishthira, along with Bhima, Arjuna (the Gandiva-bow-wielder), the twin brothers (Nakula and Sahadeva), and Satyaki, indeed honored the sages by raising their right hands (in salutation).
स तैः परिवृतो राजा नक्षत्रैरिव चन्द्रमाः ।
अभ्याजगाम गाङ्गेयं ब्रह्माणमिव वासवः ॥२६॥
26. sa taiḥ parivṛto rājā nakṣatrairiva candramāḥ ,
abhyājagāma gāṅgeyaṁ brahmāṇamiva vāsavaḥ.
26. saḥ taiḥ parivṛtaḥ rājā nakṣatraiḥ iva candramāḥ
abhyājagāma gāṅgeyam brahmāṇam iva vāsavaḥ
26. saḥ rājā nakṣatraiḥ iva candramāḥ taiḥ parivṛtaḥ
vāsavaḥ brahmāṇam iva gāṅgeyam abhyājagāma
26. The king (Yudhishthira), surrounded by them (his companions) like the moon by the constellations, then approached Bhishma (the son of Ganga), just as Indra (Vāsava) approaches Brahma.
शरतल्पे शयानं तमादित्यं पतितं यथा ।
ददर्श स महाबाहुर्भयादागतसाध्वसः ॥२७॥
27. śaratalpe śayānaṁ tamādityaṁ patitaṁ yathā ,
dadarśa sa mahābāhurbhayādāgatasādhvasaḥ.

dadarśa saḥ mahābāhuḥ bhayāt āgata-sādhvasaḥ

27. The mighty-armed one saw him lying on the bed of arrows, resembling a fallen sun, and became overwhelmed with apprehension from fear.
