भीष्म उवाच ।
ततस्तं लुब्धकः पश्यन्कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतः ।
कपोतमग्नौ पतितं वाक्यं पुनरुवाच ह ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tatastaṁ lubdhakaḥ paśyankṛpayābhipariplutaḥ ,
kapotamagnau patitaṁ vākyaṁ punaruvāca ha.

abhipariplutaḥ | kapotam agnau patitam vākyam punaḥ uvāca ha

1. Bhishma said: Then, seeing that pigeon fallen into the fire, the fowler, overwhelmed with compassion, spoke again.
किमीदृशं नृशंसेन मया कृतमबुद्धिना ।
भविष्यति हि मे नित्यं पातकं हृदि जीवतः ॥२॥
2. kimīdṛśaṁ nṛśaṁsena mayā kṛtamabuddhinā ,
bhaviṣyati hi me nityaṁ pātakaṁ hṛdi jīvataḥ.
2. kim īdṛśam nṛśaṃsena mayā kṛtam abuddhinā |
bhaviṣyati hi me nityam pātakam hṛdi jīvataḥ
2. abuddhinā nṛśaṃsena mayā īdṛśam kim kṛtam me
jīvataḥ hṛdi nityam pātakam hi bhaviṣyati
2. What a deed of cruelty has been done by me, the senseless one! Surely, as long as I live, this sin (pātaka) will always remain in my heart.
स विनिन्दन्नथात्मानं पुनः पुनरुवाच ह ।
धिङ्मामस्तु सुदुर्बुद्धिं सदा निकृतिनिश्चयम् ।
शुभं कर्म परित्यज्य योऽहं शकुनिलुब्धकः ॥३॥
3. sa vinindannathātmānaṁ punaḥ punaruvāca ha ,
dhiṅmāmastu sudurbuddhiṁ sadā nikṛtiniścayam ,
śubhaṁ karma parityajya yo'haṁ śakunilubdhakaḥ.
3. saḥ vinindan atha ātmānam punaḥ punaḥ
uvāca ha | dhik mām astu sudurbuddhim
sadā nikṛtiniścayam | śubham karma
parityajya yaḥ aham śakunilubdhakaḥ
3. saḥ atha ātmānam punaḥ punaḥ vinindan
ha uvāca sadā nikṛtiniścayam sudurbuddhim
mām dhik astu yaḥ aham śakunilubdhakaḥ
(saḥ) śubham karma parityajya
3. He, then condemning himself again and again, said: "Shame on me, the utterly foolish one, always resolved on villainy! I, who am a bird-fowler, have abandoned good (karma) deeds."
नृशंसस्य ममाद्यायं प्रत्यादेशो न संशयः ।
दत्तः स्वमांसं ददता कपोतेन महात्मना ॥४॥
4. nṛśaṁsasya mamādyāyaṁ pratyādeśo na saṁśayaḥ ,
dattaḥ svamāṁsaṁ dadatā kapotena mahātmanā.
4. nṛśaṃsasya mama adya ayam pratyādeśaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
| dattaḥ svamāṃsam dadatā kapotena mahātmanā
4. na saṃśayaḥ (asti) adya ayam pratyādeśaḥ nṛśaṃsasya mama
(ayam pratyādeśaḥ) svamāṃsam dadatā mahātmanā kapotena dattaḥ
4. This, today, is undoubtedly a reprimand (pratyādeśa) for me, the cruel one, given by the great-souled (mahātman) pigeon which offered its own flesh.
सोऽहं त्यक्ष्ये प्रियान्प्राणान्पुत्रदारं विसृज्य च ।
उपदिष्टो हि मे धर्मः कपोतेनातिधर्मिणा ॥५॥
5. so'haṁ tyakṣye priyānprāṇānputradāraṁ visṛjya ca ,
upadiṣṭo hi me dharmaḥ kapotenātidharmiṇā.
5. saḥ aham tyakṣye priyān prāṇān putradāram visṛjya
ca upadiṣṭaḥ hi me dharmaḥ kapotena atidharmiṇā
5. saḥ aham priyān prāṇān putradāram ca visṛjya
tyakṣye hi me dharmaḥ atidharmiṇā kapotena upadiṣṭaḥ
5. Therefore, I shall abandon my dear life and, forsaking my son and wife, indeed, my intrinsic nature (dharma) has been instructed to me by an exceedingly righteous (atidharmiṇā) pigeon.
अद्य प्रभृति देहं स्वं सर्वभोगैर्विवर्जितम् ।
यथा स्वल्पं जलं ग्रीष्मे शोषयिष्याम्यहं तथा ॥६॥
6. adya prabhṛti dehaṁ svaṁ sarvabhogairvivarjitam ,
yathā svalpaṁ jalaṁ grīṣme śoṣayiṣyāmyahaṁ tathā.
6. adya prabhṛti deham svam sarvabhogaiḥ vivarjitam
yathā svalpam jalam grīṣme śoṣayiṣyāmi aham tathā
6. adya prabhṛti aham svam deham sarvabhogaiḥ vivarjitam
tathā śoṣayiṣyāmi yathā grīṣme svalpam jalam
6. From today onwards, I will render my own body devoid of all enjoyments. I will dry it up just as a small amount of water dries up in summer.
क्षुत्पिपासातपसहः कृशो धमनिसंततः ।
उपवासैर्बहुविधैश्चरिष्ये पारलौकिकम् ॥७॥
7. kṣutpipāsātapasahaḥ kṛśo dhamanisaṁtataḥ ,
upavāsairbahuvidhaiścariṣye pāralaukikam.
7. kṣutpipāsātapasahaḥ kṛśaḥ dhamanisaṃtataḥ
upavāsaiḥ bahuvidhaiḥ cariṣye pāralaukikam
7. kṛśaḥ kṣutpipāsātapasahaḥ dhamanisaṃtataḥ (aham)
bahuvidhaiḥ upavāsaiḥ pāralaukikam cariṣye
7. Emaciated, enduring hunger, thirst, and heat, and with my veins clearly visible, I will undertake actions leading to the other world through many kinds of fasts.
अहो देहप्रदानेन दर्शितातिथिपूजना ।
तस्माद्धर्मं चरिष्यामि धर्मो हि परमा गतिः ।
दृष्टो हि धर्मो धर्मिष्ठैर्यादृशो विहगोत्तमे ॥८॥
8. aho dehapradānena darśitātithipūjanā ,
tasmāddharmaṁ cariṣyāmi dharmo hi paramā gatiḥ ,
dṛṣṭo hi dharmo dharmiṣṭhairyādṛśo vihagottame.
8. aho dehapradānena darśitātithipūjanā
tasmāt dharmam cariṣyāmi dharmaḥ
hi paramā gatiḥ dṛṣṭaḥ hi dharmaḥ
dharmiṣṭhaiḥ yādṛśaḥ vihagottame
8. aho dehapradānena atithipūjanā
darśitā tasmāt dharmam cariṣyāmi hi
dharmaḥ paramā gatiḥ hi dharmiṣṭhaiḥ
yādṛśaḥ dharmaḥ vihagottame dṛṣṭaḥ
8. Ah, through the offering of the body, guest-veneration was indeed demonstrated! Therefore, I shall practice my natural law (dharma), for the natural law (dharma) is certainly the supreme goal. Indeed, this natural law (dharma) has been observed by the most righteous (dharmiṣṭhaiḥ) in the excellent bird, just as it is.
एवमुक्त्वा विनिश्चित्य रौद्रकर्मा स लुब्धकः ।
महाप्रस्थानमाश्रित्य प्रययौ संशितव्रतः ॥९॥
9. evamuktvā viniścitya raudrakarmā sa lubdhakaḥ ,
mahāprasthānamāśritya prayayau saṁśitavrataḥ.
9. evam uktvā viniścitya raudrakarmā saḥ lubdhakaḥ
mahāprasthānam āśritya prayayau saṃśitavrataḥ
9. saḥ lubdhakaḥ raudrakarmā evam uktvā viniścitya
saṃśitavrataḥ mahāprasthānam āśritya prayayau
9. Having thus spoken and firmly resolved, that fowler (lubdhaka), whose deeds were cruel, undertook the great departure (mahāprasthāna) and set forth, firm in his resolve.
ततो यष्टिं शलाकाश्च क्षारकं पञ्जरं तथा ।
तांश्च बद्धा कपोतान्स संप्रमुच्योत्ससर्ज ह ॥१०॥
10. tato yaṣṭiṁ śalākāśca kṣārakaṁ pañjaraṁ tathā ,
tāṁśca baddhā kapotānsa saṁpramucyotsasarja ha.
10. tataḥ yaṣṭim śalākāḥ ca kṣārakam pañjaram tathā
tān ca baddhvā kapotān saḥ sampramucya utsasarja ha
10. tataḥ saḥ yaṣṭim śalākāḥ ca kṣārakam pañjaram tathā
tān baddhvā kapotān ca sampramucya utsasarja ha
10. Then, having tied up the stick, the stakes, the caustic substance (kṣāraka), and the cage (pañjara), he indeed completely released those pigeons (kapota).
