नारद उवाच ।
कथयिष्ये सभां दिव्यां युधिष्ठिर निबोध ताम् ।
वैवस्वतस्य यामर्थे विश्वकर्मा चकार ह ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
kathayiṣye sabhāṁ divyāṁ yudhiṣṭhira nibodha tām ,
vaivasvatasya yāmarthe viśvakarmā cakāra ha.

1. Nārada said: 'O Yudhiṣṭhira, I will describe the divine assembly hall; listen carefully to that, which Viśvakarmā indeed built for Vaivasvata (Yama).'
तैजसी सा सभा राजन्बभूव शतयोजना ।
विस्तारायामसंपन्ना भूयसी चापि पाण्डव ॥२॥
2. taijasī sā sabhā rājanbabhūva śatayojanā ,
vistārāyāmasaṁpannā bhūyasī cāpi pāṇḍava.

vistārāyāmasaṃpannā bhūyasī ca api pāṇḍava
2. O King, that luminous assembly hall measured a hundred yojanas. And, O Pāṇḍava, it was endowed with immense breadth and length.
अर्कप्रकाशा भ्राजिष्णुः सर्वतः कामचारिणी ।
नैवातिशीता नात्युष्णा मनसश्च प्रहर्षिणी ॥३॥
3. arkaprakāśā bhrājiṣṇuḥ sarvataḥ kāmacāriṇī ,
naivātiśītā nātyuṣṇā manasaśca praharṣiṇī.
3. arkaprakāśā bhrājiṣṇuḥ sarvataḥ kāmacāriṇī na
eva atiśītā na atyuṣṇā manasaḥ ca praharṣiṇī
3. It is as radiant as the sun, glittering brightly, and moving freely everywhere. It is neither too cold nor too hot, and it delights the mind.
न शोको न जरा तस्यां क्षुत्पिपासे न चाप्रियम् ।
न च दैन्यं क्लमो वापि प्रतिकूलं न चाप्युत ॥४॥
4. na śoko na jarā tasyāṁ kṣutpipāse na cāpriyam ,
na ca dainyaṁ klamo vāpi pratikūlaṁ na cāpyuta.
4. na śokaḥ na jarā tasyāṃ kṣutpipāse na ca apriyam na
ca dainyaṃ klamaḥ vā api pratikūlaṃ na ca api uta
4. In it, there is no sorrow, no old age, no hunger or thirst, nor any unpleasantness. Neither is there misery, nor fatigue, nor even anything adverse.
सर्वे कामाः स्थितास्तस्यां ये दिव्या ये च मानुषाः ।
रसवच्च प्रभूतं च भक्ष्यभोज्यमरिंदम ॥५॥
5. sarve kāmāḥ sthitāstasyāṁ ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ ,
rasavacca prabhūtaṁ ca bhakṣyabhojyamariṁdama.

rasavat ca prabhūtaṃ ca bhakṣyabhojyam ariṃdama
5. O subduer of enemies (ariṃdama), all desires—both divine and human—are present in it. And there is also delicious and abundant food and drink.
पुण्यगन्धाः स्रजस्तत्र नित्यपुष्पफलद्रुमाः ।
रसवन्ति च तोयानि शीतान्युष्णानि चैव ह ॥६॥
6. puṇyagandhāḥ srajastatra nityapuṣpaphaladrumāḥ ,
rasavanti ca toyāni śītānyuṣṇāni caiva ha.
6. puṇyagandhāḥ srajaḥ tatra nityapuṣpaphaladrumāḥ
rasavanti ca toyāni śītāni uṣṇāni ca eva ha
6. There are fragrant garlands, and trees that perpetually bear flowers and fruits. Also present are waters, both cold and hot, that are tasteful.
तस्यां राजर्षयः पुण्यास्तथा ब्रह्मर्षयोऽमलाः ।
यमं वैवस्वतं तात प्रहृष्टाः पर्युपासते ॥७॥
7. tasyāṁ rājarṣayaḥ puṇyāstathā brahmarṣayo'malāḥ ,
yamaṁ vaivasvataṁ tāta prahṛṣṭāḥ paryupāsate.
7. tasyām rājarṣayaḥ puṇyāḥ tathā brahmarṣayaḥ amalāḥ
yamam vaivasvatam tāta prahr̥ṣṭāḥ paryupāsate
7. O dear one, in that very place, pure royal sages and spotless brahmin sages joyfully worship Yama, the son of Vivasvat.
ययातिर्नहुषः पूरुर्मान्धाता सोमको नृगः ।
त्रसदस्युश्च तुरयः कृतवीर्यः श्रुतश्रवाः ॥८॥
8. yayātirnahuṣaḥ pūrurmāndhātā somako nṛgaḥ ,
trasadasyuśca turayaḥ kṛtavīryaḥ śrutaśravāḥ.
8. yayātiḥ nahuṣaḥ pūruḥ māndhātā somakaḥ nṛgaḥ
trasadasyuḥ ca turayaḥ kr̥tavīryaḥ śrutaśravāḥ
8. (Among them are) Yayāti, Nahuṣa, Pūru, Māndhātā, Somaka, Nṛga, and Trasadasyu, Turaya, Kṛtavīrya, and Śrutaśravāḥ.
अरिप्रणुत्सुसिंहश्च कृतवेगः कृतिर्निमिः ।
प्रतर्दनः शिबिर्मत्स्यः पृथ्वक्षोऽथ बृहद्रथः ॥९॥
9. aripraṇutsusiṁhaśca kṛtavegaḥ kṛtirnimiḥ ,
pratardanaḥ śibirmatsyaḥ pṛthvakṣo'tha bṛhadrathaḥ.
9. aripraṇut susiṃhaḥ ca kṛtavegaḥ kṛtiḥ nimiḥ
pratardanaḥ śibiḥ matsyaḥ pṛthvakṣaḥ atha bṛhadrathaḥ
9. Aripranut, Susimha, Krtavēga, Krti, Nimi, Pratardana, Shibi, Matsya, Pṛthvakṣa, and then Bṛhadratha.
ऐडो मरुत्तः कुशिकः सांकाश्यः सांकृतिर्भवः ।
चतुरश्वः सदश्वोर्मिः कार्तवीर्यश्च पार्थिवः ॥१०॥
10. aiḍo maruttaḥ kuśikaḥ sāṁkāśyaḥ sāṁkṛtirbhavaḥ ,
caturaśvaḥ sadaśvormiḥ kārtavīryaśca pārthivaḥ.

10. Aiḍa, Marutta, Kuśika, Sāṃkāśya, Sāṃkṛti, Bhava, Caturāśva, Sadaśvormi, Kārtavīrya, and Pārthiva.
भरतस्तथा सुरथः सुनीथो नैषधो नलः ।
दिवोदासोऽथ सुमना अम्बरीषो भगीरथः ॥११॥
11. bharatastathā surathaḥ sunītho naiṣadho nalaḥ ,
divodāso'tha sumanā ambarīṣo bhagīrathaḥ.

11. Bharata, similarly Suratha, Sunītha, Naiṣadha, Nala, Divodāsa, then Sumana, Ambarīṣa, and Bhagīratha.
व्यश्वः सदश्वो वध्र्यश्वः पञ्चहस्तः पृथुश्रवाः ।
रुषद्गुर्वृषसेनश्च क्षुपश्च सुमहाबलः ॥१२॥
12. vyaśvaḥ sadaśvo vadhryaśvaḥ pañcahastaḥ pṛthuśravāḥ ,
ruṣadgurvṛṣasenaśca kṣupaśca sumahābalaḥ.

12. Vyāśva, Sadaśva, Vadhryaśva, Pañcahasta, Pṛthuśravāḥ, Ruṣadgu, Vṛṣasena, Kṣupa, and the very mighty Sumahābala.
रुषदश्वो वसुमनाः पुरुकुत्सो ध्वजी रथी ।
आर्ष्टिषेणो दिलीपश्च महात्मा चाप्युशीनरः ॥१३॥
13. ruṣadaśvo vasumanāḥ purukutso dhvajī rathī ,
ārṣṭiṣeṇo dilīpaśca mahātmā cāpyuśīnaraḥ.

13. Ruṣadaśva, Vasumanāḥ, Purukutsa, Dhvajī, Rathī, Ārṣṭiṣeṇa, Dilīpa, and also the great-souled (mahātmā) Uśīnara.
औशीनरः पुण्डरीकः शर्यातिः शरभः शुचिः ।
अङ्गोऽरिष्टश्च वेनश्च दुःषन्तः संजयो जयः ॥१४॥
14. auśīnaraḥ puṇḍarīkaḥ śaryātiḥ śarabhaḥ śuciḥ ,
aṅgo'riṣṭaśca venaśca duḥṣantaḥ saṁjayo jayaḥ.

करंधमो बाह्लिकश्च सुद्युम्नो बलवान्मधुः ॥१५॥
15. bhāṅgāsvariḥ sunīthaśca niṣadho'tha tviṣīrathaḥ ,
karaṁdhamo bāhlikaśca sudyumno balavānmadhuḥ.

कपोतरोमा तृणकः सहदेवार्जुनौ तथा ।
रामो दाशरथिश्चैव लक्ष्मणोऽथ प्रतर्दनः ॥१६॥
16. kapotaromā tṛṇakaḥ sahadevārjunau tathā ,
rāmo dāśarathiścaiva lakṣmaṇo'tha pratardanaḥ.

अलर्कः कक्षसेनश्च गयो गौराश्व एव च ।
जामदग्न्योऽथ रामोऽत्र नाभागसगरौ तथा ॥१७॥
17. alarkaḥ kakṣasenaśca gayo gaurāśva eva ca ,
jāmadagnyo'tha rāmo'tra nābhāgasagarau tathā.

भूरिद्युम्नो महाश्वश्च पृथ्वश्वो जनकस्तथा ।
वैन्यो राजा वारिषेणः पुरुजो जनमेजयः ॥१८॥
18. bhūridyumno mahāśvaśca pṛthvaśvo janakastathā ,
vainyo rājā vāriṣeṇaḥ purujo janamejayaḥ.

ब्रह्मदत्तस्त्रिगर्तश्च राजोपरिचरस्तथा ।
इन्द्रद्युम्नो भीमजानुर्गयः पृष्ठो नयोऽनघः ॥१९॥
19. brahmadattastrigartaśca rājoparicarastathā ,
indradyumno bhīmajānurgayaḥ pṛṣṭho nayo'naghaḥ.

पद्मोऽथ मुचुकुन्दश्च भूरिद्युम्नः प्रसेनजित् ।
अरिष्टनेमिः प्रद्युम्नः पृथगश्वोऽजकस्तथा ॥२०॥
20. padmo'tha mucukundaśca bhūridyumnaḥ prasenajit ,
ariṣṭanemiḥ pradyumnaḥ pṛthagaśvo'jakastathā.
20. padmaḥ atha mucukundaḥ ca bhūridyumnaḥ prasenajit
ariṣṭanemiḥ pradyumnaḥ pṛthagaśvaḥ ajakaḥ tathā
20. Padma, and then Mucukunda; Bhūridyumna, Prasenajit; Ariṣṭanemi, Pradyumna, Pṛthagaśva, and Ajaka (are also enumerated here).
शतं मत्स्या नृपतयः शतं नीपाः शतं हयाः ।
धृतराष्ट्राश्चैकशतमशीतिर्जनमेजयाः ॥२१॥
21. śataṁ matsyā nṛpatayaḥ śataṁ nīpāḥ śataṁ hayāḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrāścaikaśatamaśītirjanamejayāḥ.
21. śatam matsyāḥ nṛpatayaḥ śatam nīpāḥ śatam hayāḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭrāḥ ca ekaśatam aśītiḥ janamejayāḥ
21. There were a hundred Matsya kings, a hundred Nipas, a hundred Hayas, a hundred Dhṛtarāṣṭras, and eighty Janamejayas.
शतं च ब्रह्मदत्तानामीरिणां वैरिणां शतम् ।
शंतनुश्चैव राजर्षिः पाण्डुश्चैव पिता तव ॥२२॥
22. śataṁ ca brahmadattānāmīriṇāṁ vairiṇāṁ śatam ,
śaṁtanuścaiva rājarṣiḥ pāṇḍuścaiva pitā tava.
22. śatam ca brahmadattānām īriṇām vairiṇām śatam
śantanuḥ ca eva rājarṣiḥ pāṇḍuḥ ca eva pitā tava
22. And there were a hundred Brahmasdattas, a hundred Īriṇas, and a hundred Vairinas. Also, the royal sage Śantanu and your father Pāṇḍu.
उशद्गवः शतरथो देवराजो जयद्रथः ।
वृषादर्भिश्च राजर्षिर्धाम्ना सह समन्त्रिणा ॥२३॥
23. uśadgavaḥ śataratho devarājo jayadrathaḥ ,
vṛṣādarbhiśca rājarṣirdhāmnā saha samantriṇā.
23. uśadgavaḥ śatarathaḥ devarājaḥ jayadrathaḥ
vṛṣādarbhiḥ ca rājarṣiḥ dhāmnā saha samantriṇā
23. Uśadgava, Śataratha, Devarāja, Jayadratha, and Vṛṣādarbhi, the royal sage, accompanied by Dhāman along with his minister.
अथापरे सहस्राणि ये गताः शशबिन्दवः ।
इष्ट्वाश्वमेधैर्बहुभिर्महद्भिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः ॥२४॥
24. athāpare sahasrāṇi ye gatāḥ śaśabindavaḥ ,
iṣṭvāśvamedhairbahubhirmahadbhirbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ.
24. atha apare sahasrāṇi ye gatāḥ śaśabindavaḥ | iṣṭvā
aśvamedhaiḥ bahubhiḥ mahadbhiḥ bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ
24. atha apare sahasrāṇi śaśabindavaḥ ye bahubhiḥ
mahadbhiḥ bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ aśvamedhaiḥ iṣṭvā gatāḥ
24. Then, thousands of others, like Śaśabindu, attained [greatness] after performing many magnificent horse (Aśvamedha) Vedic rituals (yajña) that involved lavish donations.
एते राजर्षयः पुण्याः कीर्तिमन्तो बहुश्रुताः ।
तस्यां सभायां राजर्षे वैवस्वतमुपासते ॥२५॥
25. ete rājarṣayaḥ puṇyāḥ kīrtimanto bahuśrutāḥ ,
tasyāṁ sabhāyāṁ rājarṣe vaivasvatamupāsate.
25. ete rājarṣayaḥ puṇyāḥ kīrtimantaḥ bahuśrutāḥ
tasyām sabhāyām rājarṣe vaivasvatam upāsate
25. O royal sage, these meritorious, renowned, and highly learned royal sages (rājarṣi) attend upon Yama, the son of Vivasvān, in that assembly.
अगस्त्योऽथ मतङ्गश्च कालो मृत्युस्तथैव च ।
यज्वानश्चैव सिद्धाश्च ये च योगशरीरिणः ॥२६॥
26. agastyo'tha mataṅgaśca kālo mṛtyustathaiva ca ,
yajvānaścaiva siddhāśca ye ca yogaśarīriṇaḥ.
26. agastyaḥ atha mataṅgaḥ ca kālaḥ mṛtyuḥ tathā eva
ca yajvānaḥ ca eva siddhāḥ ca ye ca yogaśarīriṇaḥ
26. Agastya, Mataṅga, Kāla (Time), and Mṛtyu (Death) are there, as are sacrificers (yajvan), perfected beings (siddha), and those who possess bodies created through the power of yoga (yoga).
अग्निष्वात्ताश्च पितरः फेनपाश्चोष्मपाश्च ये ।
स्वधावन्तो बर्हिषदो मूर्तिमन्तस्तथापरे ॥२७॥
27. agniṣvāttāśca pitaraḥ phenapāścoṣmapāśca ye ,
svadhāvanto barhiṣado mūrtimantastathāpare.
27. agniṣvāttāḥ ca pitaraḥ phenapāḥ ca uṣmapāḥ ca ye
svadhāvantaḥ barhiṣadaḥ mūrtimantaḥ tathā apare
27. There are ancestors (Pitṛs) such as the Agniṣvāttas, the foam-drinkers, and the vapor-drinkers. Similarly, there are others who partake of the svadhā offerings and those who sit on the sacrificial grass; all these are embodied.
कालचक्रं च साक्षाच्च भगवान्हव्यवाहनः ।
नरा दुष्कृतकर्माणो दक्षिणायनमृत्यवः ॥२८॥
28. kālacakraṁ ca sākṣācca bhagavānhavyavāhanaḥ ,
narā duṣkṛtakarmāṇo dakṣiṇāyanamṛtyavaḥ.
28. kālacakram ca sākṣāt ca bhagavān havyavāhanaḥ
narāḥ duṣkṛtakarmāṇaḥ dakṣiṇāyanamṛtyavaḥ
28. The wheel of time (kālacakra) and the divine lord Agni, who directly carries oblations, are present. Additionally, wicked men who perform evil deeds (karma) meet their deaths during the southern course of the sun (dakṣiṇāyana).
कालस्य नयने युक्ता यमस्य पुरुषाश्च ये ।
तस्यां शिंशपपालाशास्तथा काशकुशादयः ।
उपासते धर्मराजं मूर्तिमन्तो निरामयाः ॥२९॥
29. kālasya nayane yuktā yamasya puruṣāśca ye ,
tasyāṁ śiṁśapapālāśāstathā kāśakuśādayaḥ ,
upāsate dharmarājaṁ mūrtimanto nirāmayāḥ.
29. kālasya nayane yuktāḥ yamasya
puruṣāḥ ca ye tasyām śiṃśapāpalāśāḥ
tathā kāśakuśādayaḥ upāsate
dharmarājam mūrtimantaḥ nirāmayāḥ
29. And those who are engaged in the governance of time, along with the servants of Yama, and similarly, the śiṃśapā and palāśa trees, as well as kāśa grass, kuśa grass, and others — all these, being embodied and free from illness, serve Dharmarāja (Yama, the king of natural law).
एते चान्ये च बहवः पितृराजसभासदः ।
अशक्याः परिसंख्यातुं नामभिः कर्मभिस्तथा ॥३०॥
30. ete cānye ca bahavaḥ pitṛrājasabhāsadaḥ ,
aśakyāḥ parisaṁkhyātuṁ nāmabhiḥ karmabhistathā.
30. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ pitṛrājasabhāsadaḥ
aśakyāḥ parisaṃkhyātuṃ nāmabhiḥ karmabhiḥ tathā
30. These and many other members of the assembly of Yama, the King of the Ancestors, are impossible to fully enumerate by their names or by their actions (karma).
असंबाधा हि सा पार्थ रम्या कामगमा सभा ।
दीर्घकालं तपस्तप्त्वा निर्मिता विश्वकर्मणा ॥३१॥
31. asaṁbādhā hi sā pārtha ramyā kāmagamā sabhā ,
dīrghakālaṁ tapastaptvā nirmitā viśvakarmaṇā.
31. asaṃbādhā hi sā pārtha ramyā kāmagamā sabhā
dīrghakālaṃ tapaḥ taptvā nirmitā viśvakarmaṇā
31. Indeed, O Pārtha, that unobstructed, beautiful assembly hall, which can go anywhere at will, was constructed by Viśvakarma after he had performed arduous austerities (tapas) for a long time.
प्रभासन्ती ज्वलन्तीव तेजसा स्वेन भारत ।
तामुग्रतपसो यान्ति सुव्रताः सत्यवादिनः ॥३२॥
32. prabhāsantī jvalantīva tejasā svena bhārata ,
tāmugratapaso yānti suvratāḥ satyavādinaḥ.
32. prabhāsantī jvalantī iva tejasā svena bhārata
tām ugratapasaḥ yānti suvratāḥ satyavādinaḥ
32. Shining and as if blazing with its own brilliance, O Bhārata, to that assembly go those who have performed severe austerities (tapas), who keep good vows, and who speak the truth.
शान्ताः संन्यासिनः सिद्धाः पूताः पुण्येन कर्मणा ।
सर्वे भास्वरदेहाश्च सर्वे च विरजोम्बराः ॥३३॥
33. śāntāḥ saṁnyāsinaḥ siddhāḥ pūtāḥ puṇyena karmaṇā ,
sarve bhāsvaradehāśca sarve ca virajombarāḥ.
33. śāntāḥ saṃnyāsinaḥ siddhāḥ pūtāḥ puṇyena karmaṇā
sarve bhāsvaradehāḥ ca sarve ca virajombarāḥ
33. The serene renunciates (saṃnyāsinaḥ) and perfected beings (siddhāḥ), purified by their virtuous actions (karma), all possessed radiant bodies and wore spotless garments.
चित्राङ्गदाश्चित्रमाल्याः सर्वे ज्वलितकुण्डलाः ।
सुकृतैः कर्मभिः पुण्यैः परिबर्हैर्विभूषिताः ॥३४॥
34. citrāṅgadāścitramālyāḥ sarve jvalitakuṇḍalāḥ ,
sukṛtaiḥ karmabhiḥ puṇyaiḥ paribarhairvibhūṣitāḥ.

34. All of them wore colorful armlets, variegated garlands, and shining earrings. They were adorned by their good and meritorious deeds (karma), which served as their ornaments.
गन्धर्वाश्च महात्मानः शतशश्चाप्सरोगणाः ।
वादित्रं नृत्तगीतं च हास्यं लास्यं च सर्वशः ॥३५॥
35. gandharvāśca mahātmānaḥ śataśaścāpsarogaṇāḥ ,
vāditraṁ nṛttagītaṁ ca hāsyaṁ lāsyaṁ ca sarvaśaḥ.
35. gandharvāḥ ca mahātmānaḥ śataśaḥ ca apsarogaṇāḥ
vāditram nṛttagītam ca hāsyam lāṣyam ca sarvaśaḥ
35. There were also hundreds of Gandharvas (gandharvāḥ), great-souled beings, and hosts of Apsaras. Everywhere there was music from instruments, dance and song, laughter, and graceful dancing.
पुण्याश्च गन्धाः शब्दाश्च तस्यां पार्थ समन्ततः ।
दिव्यानि माल्यानि च तामुपतिष्ठन्ति सर्वशः ॥३६॥
36. puṇyāśca gandhāḥ śabdāśca tasyāṁ pārtha samantataḥ ,
divyāni mālyāni ca tāmupatiṣṭhanti sarvaśaḥ.
36. puṇyāḥ ca gandhāḥ śabdāḥ ca tasyām pārtha samantataḥ
divyāni mālyāni ca tām upatiṣṭhanti sarvaśaḥ
36. O Partha, auspicious fragrances and sounds are present everywhere in that assembly. Furthermore, divine garlands attend to it from all directions.
शतं शतसहस्राणि धर्मिणां तं प्रजेश्वरम् ।
उपासते महात्मानं रूपयुक्ता मनस्विनः ॥३७॥
37. śataṁ śatasahasrāṇi dharmiṇāṁ taṁ prajeśvaram ,
upāsate mahātmānaṁ rūpayuktā manasvinaḥ.
37. śatam śatasahasrāṇi dharmiṇām tam prajeśvaram
upāsate mahātmānam rūpayuktāḥ manasvinaḥ
37. Ten million individuals devoted to natural law (dharma), endowed with beautiful forms and noble minds, worship that great-souled (mahātman) lord of creatures.
ईदृशी सा सभा राजन्पितृराज्ञो महात्मनः ।
वरुणस्यापि वक्ष्यामि सभां पुष्करमालिनीम् ॥३८॥
38. īdṛśī sā sabhā rājanpitṛrājño mahātmanaḥ ,
varuṇasyāpi vakṣyāmi sabhāṁ puṣkaramālinīm.

varuṇasya api vakṣyāmi sabhām puṣkaramālinīm
38. O King, that is the nature of the assembly belonging to the great-souled (mahātman) king of the ancestors. I will now also describe the assembly of Varuna, which is adorned with lotus garlands.
