वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्मिन्संप्रस्थिते कृष्णा पृथां प्राप्य यशस्विनीम् ।
आपृच्छद्भृशदुःखार्ता याश्चान्यास्तत्र योषितः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasminsaṁprasthite kṛṣṇā pṛthāṁ prāpya yaśasvinīm ,
āpṛcchadbhṛśaduḥkhārtā yāścānyāstatra yoṣitaḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: When he (Yudhiṣṭhira) had departed, Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā), deeply afflicted by sorrow, approached the glorious Pṛthā (Kuntī) and bid farewell to her and to the other women who were present there.
यथार्हं वन्दनाश्लेषान्कृत्वा गन्तुमियेष सा ।
ततो निनादः सुमहान्पाण्डवान्तःपुरेऽभवत् ॥२॥
2. yathārhaṁ vandanāśleṣānkṛtvā gantumiyeṣa sā ,
tato ninādaḥ sumahānpāṇḍavāntaḥpure'bhavat.
2. yathārham vandanāśleṣān kṛtvā gantum iyeṣa sā
tataḥ ninādaḥ sumahān pāṇḍavāntaḥpure abhavat
2. After offering appropriate salutations and embraces, she (Draupadī) wished to depart. Then, a very great lamentation arose within the Pāṇḍavas' inner chambers (antaḥpura).
कुन्ती च भृशसंतप्ता द्रौपदीं प्रेक्ष्य गच्छतीम् ।
शोकविह्वलया वाचा कृच्छ्राद्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. kuntī ca bhṛśasaṁtaptā draupadīṁ prekṣya gacchatīm ,
śokavihvalayā vācā kṛcchrādvacanamabravīt.
3. kuntī ca bhṛśasaṃtaptā draupadīm prekṣya gacchatīm
śokavihvalayā vācā kṛcchrāt vacanam abravīt
3. Greatly distressed, Kunti, seeing Draupadi departing, spoke with a voice choked by sorrow, uttering words with great difficulty.
वत्से शोको न ते कार्यः प्राप्येदं व्यसनं महत् ।
स्त्रीधर्माणामभिज्ञासि शीलाचारवती तथा ॥४॥
4. vatse śoko na te kāryaḥ prāpyedaṁ vyasanaṁ mahat ,
strīdharmāṇāmabhijñāsi śīlācāravatī tathā.
4. vatse śokaḥ na te kāryaḥ prāpya idam vyasanam
mahat strīdharāmām abhijñā asi śīlācāravatī tathā
4. O dear daughter, you should not give in to sorrow (śoka) despite having encountered this great calamity. You are indeed knowledgeable of the natural laws (dharma) of women and possess excellent conduct and character.
न त्वां संदेष्टुमर्हामि भर्तॄन्प्रति शुचिस्मिते ।
साध्वीगुणसमाधानैर्भूषितं ते कुलद्वयम् ॥५॥
5. na tvāṁ saṁdeṣṭumarhāmi bhartṝnprati śucismite ,
sādhvīguṇasamādhānairbhūṣitaṁ te kuladvayam.
5. na tvām saṃdeṣṭum arhāmi bhartṝn prati śucismite
sādhvīguṇasamādhānaiḥ bhūṣitam te kuladvayam
5. O pure-smiling one, I am not fit to instruct you regarding your husbands. Indeed, your two families (both paternal and marital) are adorned by your possession of the virtues of a chaste and devoted wife.
सभाग्याः कुरवश्चेमे ये न दग्धास्त्वयानघे ।
अरिष्टं व्रज पन्थानं मदनुध्यानबृंहिता ॥६॥
6. sabhāgyāḥ kuravaśceme ye na dagdhāstvayānaghe ,
ariṣṭaṁ vraja panthānaṁ madanudhyānabṛṁhitā.
6. sabhāgyāḥ kuravaḥ ca ime ye na dagdhāḥ tvayā
anaghe ariṣṭam vraja panthānam madanudhyānabṛṃhitā
6. O sinless one, fortunate are these Kurus, who were not consumed (burnt) by your wrath. Go forth on your journey unharmed, strengthened by my constant contemplation (dhyāna) and good wishes.
भाविन्यर्थे हि सत्स्त्रीणां वैक्लव्यं नोपजायते ।
गुरुधर्माभिगुप्ता च श्रेयः क्षिप्रमवाप्स्यसि ॥७॥
7. bhāvinyarthe hi satstrīṇāṁ vaiklavyaṁ nopajāyate ,
gurudharmābhiguptā ca śreyaḥ kṣipramavāpsyasi.
7. bhāvini arthe hi satstrīṇām vaiklavyam na upajāyate
gurudharmābhiguptā ca śreyaḥ kṣipram avāpsyasi
7. Indeed, virtuous women do not experience agitation regarding future matters. And you, protected by weighty natural law (dharma), will swiftly attain ultimate good.
सहदेवश्च मे पुत्रः सदावेक्ष्यो वने वसन् ।
यथेदं व्यसनं प्राप्य नास्य सीदेन्महन्मनः ॥८॥
8. sahadevaśca me putraḥ sadāvekṣyo vane vasan ,
yathedaṁ vyasanaṁ prāpya nāsya sīdenmahanmanaḥ.
8. sahadevaḥ ca me putraḥ sadā avekṣyaḥ vane vasan
yathā idam vyasanam prāpya na asya sīdet mahat manaḥ
8. And my son Sahadeva, who is living in the forest, should always be watched over, so that having encountered this distress, his great mind may not become dejected.
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु सा देवी स्रवन्नेत्रजलाविला ।
शोणिताक्तैकवसना मुक्तकेश्यभिनिर्ययौ ॥९॥
9. tathetyuktvā tu sā devī sravannetrajalāvilā ,
śoṇitāktaikavasanā muktakeśyabhiniryayau.
9. tathā iti uktvā tu sā devī sravannetrajalāvilā
śoṇitāktaikavasanā muktakeśī abhiniyayau
9. Having said, "So be it," that queen, distressed by her flowing tears, wearing only a single blood-soaked garment, and with her hair disheveled, then departed.
तां क्रोशन्तीं पृथा दुःखादनुवव्राज गच्छतीम् ।
अथापश्यत्सुतान्सर्वान्हृताभरणवाससः ॥१०॥
10. tāṁ krośantīṁ pṛthā duḥkhādanuvavrāja gacchatīm ,
athāpaśyatsutānsarvānhṛtābharaṇavāsasaḥ.
10. tām krośantīm pṛthā duḥkhāt anuvavraja gacchantīm
atha apaśyat sutān sarvān hṛtābharaṇavāsasaḥ
10. From sorrow, Pritha followed her as she cried and departed. Then she saw all her sons, whose ornaments and clothes had been taken away.
रुरुचर्मावृततनून्ह्रिया किंचिदवाङ्मुखान् ।
परैः परीतान्संहृष्टैः सुहृद्भिश्चानुशोचितान् ॥११॥
11. rurucarmāvṛtatanūnhriyā kiṁcidavāṅmukhān ,
paraiḥ parītānsaṁhṛṣṭaiḥ suhṛdbhiścānuśocitān.
11. rurucarmāvṛtatanūn hriyā kiṃcit avāṅmukhān paraiḥ
parītān saṃhṛṣṭaiḥ suhṛdbhiḥ ca anuśocitān
11. Their bodies were covered with deer skins, and their faces were somewhat downcast due to shame. They were surrounded by greatly delighted enemies, and mourned by their friends.
तदवस्थान्सुतान्सर्वानुपसृत्यातिवत्सला ।
सस्वजानावदच्छोकात्तत्तद्विलपती बहु ॥१२॥
12. tadavasthānsutānsarvānupasṛtyātivatsalā ,
sasvajānāvadacchokāttattadvilapatī bahu.
12. tat avasthān sutān sarvān upasṛtya ativatsalā
sasvājān avadat śokāt tattat vilapatī bahu
12. Being extremely affectionate, she approached all her sons who were in that state. She embraced them and, weeping profusely from grief, uttered many lamentations.
कथं सद्धर्मचारित्रवृत्तस्थितिविभूषितान् ।
अक्षुद्रान्दृढभक्तांश्च दैवतेज्यापरान्सदा ॥१३॥
13. kathaṁ saddharmacāritravṛttasthitivibhūṣitān ,
akṣudrāndṛḍhabhaktāṁśca daivatejyāparānsadā.
13. katham saddharmacāritravṛttasthitivibhūṣitān
akṣudrān dṛḍhabhaktān ca daivatejyāparān sadā
13. How is it that those who are adorned with virtuous conduct and steadfastness in their intrinsic nature (dharma), who are noble-minded, firm in their devotion (bhakti), and always dedicated to the worship of gods [have come to such a plight]?
व्यसनं वः समभ्यागात्कोऽयं विधिविपर्ययः ।
कस्यापध्यानजं चेदमागः पश्यामि वो धिया ॥१४॥
14. vyasanaṁ vaḥ samabhyāgātko'yaṁ vidhiviparyayaḥ ,
kasyāpadhyānajaṁ cedamāgaḥ paśyāmi vo dhiyā.
14. vyasanam vaḥ samabhyāgāt kaḥ ayam vidhiviparyayaḥ
kasya apadhyānajam ca idam āgaḥ paśyāmi vaḥ dhiyā
14. A calamity has certainly befallen you. What is this reversal of fate? Whose evil intention or offense has caused this? I perceive this for you through my intellect.
स्यात्तु मद्भाग्यदोषोऽयं याहं युष्मानजीजनम् ।
दुःखायासभुजोऽत्यर्थं युक्तानप्युत्तमैर्गुणैः ॥१५॥
15. syāttu madbhāgyadoṣo'yaṁ yāhaṁ yuṣmānajījanam ,
duḥkhāyāsabhujo'tyarthaṁ yuktānapyuttamairguṇaiḥ.
15. syāt tu mat bhāgyadoṣaḥ ayam yā aham yuṣmān ajījanam
duḥkhāyāsabhujaḥ atyartham yuktān api uttamaiḥ guṇaiḥ
15. Perhaps this is indeed the fault of my destiny, that I gave birth to you, who, despite being endowed with excellent qualities, must exceedingly endure sorrow and hardship.
कथं वत्स्यथ दुर्गेषु वनेष्वृद्धिविनाकृताः ।
वीर्यसत्त्वबलोत्साहतेजोभिरकृशाः कृशाः ॥१६॥
16. kathaṁ vatsyatha durgeṣu vaneṣvṛddhivinākṛtāḥ ,
vīryasattvabalotsāhatejobhirakṛśāḥ kṛśāḥ.
16. katham vatsyatha durgeṣu vaneṣu ṛddhivinākṛtāḥ
vīryasattvabalotsāhatejobhiḥ akṛśāḥ kṛśāḥ
16. How will you live in these difficult forests, deprived of all prosperity, you who, though physically weakened, are intrinsically not diminished in valor, courage, strength, enthusiasm, and prowess?
यद्येतदहमज्ञास्यं वनवासो हि वो ध्रुवम् ।
शतशृङ्गान्मृते पाण्डौ नागमिष्यं गजाह्वयम् ॥१७॥
17. yadyetadahamajñāsyaṁ vanavāso hi vo dhruvam ,
śataśṛṅgānmṛte pāṇḍau nāgamiṣyaṁ gajāhvayam.
17. yadi etat aham ajñāsyam vanavāsaḥ hi vaḥ dhruvam
śataśṛṅgāt mṛte pāṇḍau na āgamiṣyam gajāhvayam
17. If I had known that your exile to the forest was indeed inevitable, I would not have come to Gajāhvaya (Hastināpura) from Mount Śataśṛṅga after Pāṇḍu's death.
धन्यं वः पितरं मन्ये तपोमेधान्वितं तथा ।
यः पुत्राधिमसंप्राप्य स्वर्गेच्छामकरोत्प्रियाम् ॥१८॥
18. dhanyaṁ vaḥ pitaraṁ manye tapomedhānvitaṁ tathā ,
yaḥ putrādhimasaṁprāpya svargecchāmakarotpriyām.
18. dhanyam vaḥ pitaram manye tapomedhānvitam tathā
yaḥ putrādhim asaṃprāpya svargecchām akarot priyām
18. I consider your father blessed, who was endowed with asceticism (tapas) and intelligence. He did not experience the anguish concerning his sons, and thus cherished his desire for heaven.
धन्यां चातीन्द्रियज्ञानामिमां प्राप्तां परां गतिम् ।
मन्येऽद्य माद्रीं धर्मज्ञां कल्याणीं सर्वथैव हि ॥१९॥
19. dhanyāṁ cātīndriyajñānāmimāṁ prāptāṁ parāṁ gatim ,
manye'dya mādrīṁ dharmajñāṁ kalyāṇīṁ sarvathaiva hi.
19. dhanyām ca atīndriyajñānām imām prāptām parām gatim
manye adya mādrīm dharmajñām kalyāṇīm sarvathā eva hi
19. Today, I consider this blessed Madri, who possessed supra-sensory knowledge and attained the supreme state, as one who understood righteousness (dharma) and was auspicious in every respect.
रत्या मत्या च गत्या च ययाहमभिसंधिता ।
जीवितप्रियतां मह्यं धिगिमां क्लेशभागिनीम् ॥२०॥
20. ratyā matyā ca gatyā ca yayāhamabhisaṁdhitā ,
jīvitapriyatāṁ mahyaṁ dhigimāṁ kleśabhāginīm.
20. ratyā matyā ca gatyā ca yayā aham abhisaṃdhitā
jīvitapriyatām mahyam dhik imām kleśabhāginīm
20. By her affection, her wisdom, and her fate, by which I have been afflicted. Alas for this partaker of sorrow, who was dearer than life to me!
एवं विलपतीं कुन्तीमभिसान्त्व्य प्रणम्य च ।
पाण्डवा विगतानन्दा वनायैव प्रवव्रजुः ॥२१॥
21. evaṁ vilapatīṁ kuntīmabhisāntvya praṇamya ca ,
pāṇḍavā vigatānandā vanāyaiva pravavrajuḥ.
21. evam vilapatīm kuntīm abhisaṃtvya praṇamya ca
pāṇḍavāḥ vigatānandāḥ vanāya eva pravavrajuḥ
21. Having thus consoled Kunti, who was lamenting, and having bowed to her, the Pāṇḍavas, their joy gone, departed for the forest.
विदुरादयश्च तामार्तां कुन्तीमाश्वास्य हेतुभिः ।
प्रावेशयन्गृहं क्षत्तुः स्वयमार्ततराः शनैः ॥२२॥
22. vidurādayaśca tāmārtāṁ kuntīmāśvāsya hetubhiḥ ,
prāveśayangṛhaṁ kṣattuḥ svayamārtatarāḥ śanaiḥ.
22. vidurādayaḥ ca tām ārtām kuntīm āśvāsya hetubhiḥ
prāveśayan gṛham kṣattuḥ svayam ārtatarāḥ śanaiḥ
22. And Vidura and the others, having consoled that distressed Kunti with various arguments, slowly led her into the house of Kṣattṛ, they themselves being even more distressed.
राजा च धृतराष्ट्रः स शोकाकुलितचेतनः ।
क्षत्तुः संप्रेषयामास शीघ्रमागम्यतामिति ॥२३॥
23. rājā ca dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ sa śokākulitacetanaḥ ,
kṣattuḥ saṁpreṣayāmāsa śīghramāgamyatāmiti.
23. rājā ca dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ sa śokākulitacetanaḥ
kṣattuḥ saṃpreṣayāmāsa śīghram āgamyatām iti
23. And King Dhritarashtra, his mind agitated by grief, sent a message to the charioteer (Vidura), saying, 'Come quickly!'
ततो जगाम विदुरो धृतराष्ट्रनिवेशनम् ।
तं पर्यपृच्छत्संविग्नो धृतराष्ट्रो नराधिपः ॥२४॥
24. tato jagāma viduro dhṛtarāṣṭraniveśanam ,
taṁ paryapṛcchatsaṁvigno dhṛtarāṣṭro narādhipaḥ.
24. tataḥ jagāma viduraḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraniveśanam tam
paryapṛcchat saṃvignaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ narādhipaḥ
24. Then Vidura went to Dhritarashtra's palace. The distressed King Dhritarashtra then questioned him (Vidura).
