संजय उवाच ।
महासत्त्वौ तु तौ दृष्ट्वा सहितौ केशवार्जुनौ ।
हतमाधिरथिं मेने संख्ये गाण्डीवधन्वना ॥१॥

1. sañjayaḥ uvāca: tu mahāsattvau sahitau tau keśavārjunau dṛṣṭvā (Yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) saṅkhye gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ādhirathim hatam mene.
1. Sañjaya said: But seeing those two great-souled ones, Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) and Arjuna, reunited, he (Yudhiṣṭhira, implicitly) understood that Karṇa (Adhirathi's son) had been slain in battle by the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow.
तावभ्यनन्दत्कौन्तेयः साम्ना परमवल्गुना ।
स्मितपूर्वममित्रघ्नः पूजयन्भरतर्षभ ॥२॥
2. tāvabhyanandatkaunteyaḥ sāmnā paramavalgunā ,
smitapūrvamamitraghnaḥ pūjayanbharatarṣabha.

2. O best among Bharatas (Bharatarṣabha), the son of Kunti (Kaunteya), the slayer of enemies (amitraghna), respectfully greeted those two with exceedingly gentle words, preceded by a smile.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
स्वागतं देवकीपुत्र स्वागतं ते धनंजय ।
प्रियं मे दर्शनं बाढं युवयोरच्युतार्जुनौ ॥३॥
3. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
svāgataṁ devakīputra svāgataṁ te dhanaṁjaya ,
priyaṁ me darśanaṁ bāḍhaṁ yuvayoracyutārjunau.

dhanaṃjaya priyam me darśanam bāḍham yuvayoḥ acyutārjunau

3. Yudhiṣṭhira said: Welcome, son of Devakī! Welcome to you, Dhanaṃjaya! The sight of you two is indeed very dear to me, O Acyuta and Arjuna!
अक्षताभ्यामरिष्टाभ्यां कथं युध्य महारथम् ।
आशीविषसमं युद्धे सर्वशस्त्रविशारदम् ॥४॥
4. akṣatābhyāmariṣṭābhyāṁ kathaṁ yudhya mahāratham ,
āśīviṣasamaṁ yuddhe sarvaśastraviśāradam.

4. How are you two, who are unharmed and uninjured, to fight such a great charioteer, who is like a venomous snake in battle and skilled in all weapons?
अग्रगं धार्तराष्ट्राणां सर्वेषां शर्म वर्म च ।
रक्षितं वृषसेनेन सुषेणेन च धन्विना ॥५॥
5. agragaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ sarveṣāṁ śarma varma ca ,
rakṣitaṁ vṛṣasenena suṣeṇena ca dhanvinā.

5. He is the foremost among all the Dhārtarāṣṭras, their protection and their armor, guarded by Vṛṣasena and by the archer Suṣeṇa.
अनुज्ञातं महावीर्यं रामेणास्त्रेषु दुर्जयम् ।
त्रातारं धार्तराष्ट्राणां गन्तारं वाहिनीमुखे ॥६॥
6. anujñātaṁ mahāvīryaṁ rāmeṇāstreṣu durjayam ,
trātāraṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ gantāraṁ vāhinīmukhe.

trātāram dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām gantāram vāhinīmukhe

6. You have defeated him who was sanctioned (to wield weapons) by Rāma (Paraśurāma), who was of great prowess and unconquerable in missile warfare. He was the protector of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and always advanced at the forefront of the army.
हन्तारमरिसैन्यानाममित्रगणमर्दनम् ।
दुर्योधनहिते युक्तमस्मद्युद्धाय चोद्यतम् ॥७॥
7. hantāramarisainyānāmamitragaṇamardanam ,
duryodhanahite yuktamasmadyuddhāya codyatam.

7. arisainyānām hantāram amitragaṇamardanam

7. He was the slayer of enemy armies, the crusher of enemy hosts, fully dedicated to Duryodhana's welfare, and ever ready for battle against us.
अप्रधृष्यं महायुद्धे देवैरपि सवासवैः ।
अनलानिलयोस्तुल्यं तेजसा च बलेन च ॥८॥
8. apradhṛṣyaṁ mahāyuddhe devairapi savāsavaiḥ ,
analānilayostulyaṁ tejasā ca balena ca.
8. apradhṛṣyam mahāyuddhe devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ
anala anilayoḥ tulyam tejasā ca balena ca
8. mahāyuddhe devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ apradhṛṣyam,
analānilayoḥ tejasā ca balena ca tulyam
8. He was unassailable even by the gods with Indra in a great battle, and equal to fire and wind in both their fierce energy and immense power.
पातालमिव गम्भीरं सुहृदानन्दवर्धनम् ।
अन्तकाभममित्राणां कर्णं हत्वा महाहवे ।
दिष्ट्या युवामनुप्राप्तौ जित्वासुरमिवामरौ ॥९॥
9. pātālamiva gambhīraṁ suhṛdānandavardhanam ,
antakābhamamitrāṇāṁ karṇaṁ hatvā mahāhave ,
diṣṭyā yuvāmanuprāptau jitvāsuramivāmarau.
9. pātālam iva gambhīram suhṛdānandavardhanam
antakābham amitrāṇām
karṇam hatvā mahāhave diṣṭyā yuvām
anuprāptau jitvā asuram iva amarau

suhṛdānandavardhanam antakābham amitrāṇām
9. He was deep like the netherworld, the enhancer of his friends' joy, and a figure like Death (Antaka) for his foes. By good fortune, you two (Pāṇḍavas), like immortal deities who have vanquished a demon, have returned after slaying Karṇa in this great battle.
तेन युद्धमदीनेन मया ह्यद्याच्युतार्जुनौ ।
कुपितेनान्तकेनेव प्रजाः सर्वा जिघांसता ॥१०॥
10. tena yuddhamadīnena mayā hyadyācyutārjunau ,
kupitenāntakeneva prajāḥ sarvā jighāṁsatā.
10. tena yuddham adīnena mayā hi adya acyutārjunau
kupitena antakena iva prajāḥ sarvāḥ jighāṃsatā
10. adya hi mayā tena adīnena kupitena antakena iva
sarvāḥ prajāḥ jighāṃsatā acyutārjunau yuddham
10. Indeed, today, in my presence, that resolute Karna waged battle against Acyuta (Krishna) and Arjuna, like an enraged god of death (Antaka) who desires to destroy all creatures.
तेन केतुश्च मे छिन्नो हतौ च पार्ष्णिसारथी ।
हतवाहः कृतश्चास्मि युयुधानस्य पश्यतः ॥११॥
11. tena ketuśca me chinno hatau ca pārṣṇisārathī ,
hatavāhaḥ kṛtaścāsmi yuyudhānasya paśyataḥ.
11. tena ketuḥ ca me chinnaḥ hatau ca pārṣṇisārathī
hatavāhaḥ kṛtaḥ ca asmi yuyudhānasya paśyataḥ
11. tena me ketuḥ ca chinnaḥ ca pārṣṇisārathī hatau
ca asmi hatavāhaḥ kṛtaḥ yuyudhānasya paśyataḥ
11. By him (Karna), my banner was cut down, and my charioteer and his protector (pārṣṇisārathī) were both killed. I was also rendered deprived of my vehicle (hatavāhaḥ), while Yuyudhana (Satyaki) was looking on.
धृष्टद्युम्नस्य यमयोर्वीरस्य च शिखण्डिनः ।
पश्यतां द्रौपदेयानां पाञ्चालानां च सर्वशः ॥१२॥
12. dhṛṣṭadyumnasya yamayorvīrasya ca śikhaṇḍinaḥ ,
paśyatāṁ draupadeyānāṁ pāñcālānāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ.
12. dhṛṣṭadyumnasya yamayoḥ vīrasya ca śikhaṇḍinaḥ
paśyatām draupadeyānām pāñcālānām ca sarvaśaḥ

12. While Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), the hero Śikhaṇḍin, and all the sons of Draupadi and the Pāñcālas were looking on...
एताञ्जित्वा महावीर्यान्कर्णः शत्रुगणान्बहून् ।
जितवान्मां महाबाहो यतमानं महारणे ॥१३॥
13. etāñjitvā mahāvīryānkarṇaḥ śatrugaṇānbahūn ,
jitavānmāṁ mahābāho yatamānaṁ mahāraṇe.
13. etān jitvā mahāvīryān karṇaḥ śatrugaṇān
bahūn jitavān mām mahābāho yatamānam mahāraṇe
13. mahābāho karṇaḥ etān bahūn mahāvīryān
śatrugaṇān jitvā mahāraṇe yatamānam mām jitavān
13. O mighty-armed one (Arjuna)! Karna, having conquered these many highly valorous hosts of enemies, then conquered me, even as I was striving in the great battle.
अनुसृत्य च मां युद्धे परुषाण्युक्तवान्बहु ।
तत्र तत्र युधां श्रेष्ठः परिभूय न संशयः ॥१४॥
14. anusṛtya ca māṁ yuddhe paruṣāṇyuktavānbahu ,
tatra tatra yudhāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ paribhūya na saṁśayaḥ.
14. anusṛtya ca mām yuddhe paruṣāṇi uktavān bahu
tatra tatra yudhām śreṣṭhaḥ paribhūya na saṃśayaḥ
14. ca yuddhe mām anusṛtya bahu paruṣāṇi uktavān tatra tatra yudhām śreṣṭhaḥ paribhūya,
na saṃśayaḥ
14. And pursuing me in battle, he spoke many harsh words. There is no doubt that the foremost of warriors (Bhima) repeatedly humiliated me in various encounters.
भीमसेनप्रभावात्तु यज्जीवामि धनंजय ।
बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन नाहं तत्सोढुमुत्सहे ॥१५॥
15. bhīmasenaprabhāvāttu yajjīvāmi dhanaṁjaya ,
bahunātra kimuktena nāhaṁ tatsoḍhumutsahe.
15. bhīmasenaprabhāvāt tu yat jīvāmi dhanañjaya
bahunā atra kim uktena na aham tat soḍhum utsahe
15. dhanañjaya,
tu bhīmasenaprabhāvāt yat jīvāmi atra bahunā uktena kim? aham tat soḍhum na utsahe
15. O Dhananjaya (Arjuna), I survive only by the power of Bhimasena. What more needs to be said on this matter? I am truly unable to endure that (suffering).
त्रयोदशाहं वर्षाणि यस्माद्भीतो धनंजय ।
न स्म निद्रां लभे रात्रौ न चाहनि सुखं क्वचित् ॥१६॥
16. trayodaśāhaṁ varṣāṇi yasmādbhīto dhanaṁjaya ,
na sma nidrāṁ labhe rātrau na cāhani sukhaṁ kvacit.
16. trayodaśa aham varṣāṇi yasmāt bhītaḥ dhanañjaya na
sma nidrām labhe rātrau na ca ahani sukham kvacit
16. dhanañjaya,
yasmāt bhītaḥ aham trayodaśa varṣāṇi rātrau nidrām na sma labhe,
ca ahani kvacit sukham na
16. O Dhananjaya (Arjuna), for thirteen years, I, fearful of him (Bhima), could not find sleep at night, nor any comfort during the day.
तस्य द्वेषेण संयुक्तः परिदह्ये धनंजय ।
आत्मनो मरणं जानन्वाध्रीणस इव द्विपः ॥१७॥
17. tasya dveṣeṇa saṁyuktaḥ paridahye dhanaṁjaya ,
ātmano maraṇaṁ jānanvādhrīṇasa iva dvipaḥ.
17. tasya dveṣeṇa saṃyuktaḥ paridahye dhanañjaya
ātmanaḥ maraṇam jānan vādhīṇasaḥ iva dvipaḥ
17. dhanañjaya,
tasya dveṣeṇa saṃyuktaḥ (aham) ātmanaḥ maraṇam jānan vādhrīṇasaḥ dvipaḥ iva paridahye
17. O Dhananjaya (Arjuna), filled with hatred for him (Bhima), I burn within, knowing the death of my own self (ātman), just like a bound elephant (vādhīṇasa) knowing its end.
यस्यायमगमत्कालश्चिन्तयानस्य मे विभो ।
कथं शक्यो मया कर्णो युद्धे क्षपयितुं भवेत् ॥१८॥
18. yasyāyamagamatkālaścintayānasya me vibho ,
kathaṁ śakyo mayā karṇo yuddhe kṣapayituṁ bhavet.
18. yasya ayam agamat kālaḥ cintayānasya me vibho
katham śakyaḥ mayā karṇaḥ yuddhe kṣapayitum bhavet
18. vibho me ayam kālaḥ cintayānasya agamat mayā
yuddhe karṇaḥ katham kṣapayitum śakyaḥ bhavet
18. O mighty one, all this time has passed while I was contemplating, 'How can Karna possibly be vanquished by me in battle?'
जाग्रत्स्वपंश्च कौन्तेय कर्णमेव सदा ह्यहम् ।
पश्यामि तत्र तत्रैव कर्णभूतमिदं जगत् ॥१९॥
19. jāgratsvapaṁśca kaunteya karṇameva sadā hyaham ,
paśyāmi tatra tatraiva karṇabhūtamidaṁ jagat.
19. jāgrat svapan ca kaunteya karṇam eva sadā hi aham
paśyāmi tatra tatra eva karṇabhūtam idam jagat
19. kaunteya hi aham jāgrat ca svapan sadā karṇam eva
paśyāmi tatra tatra eva idam jagat karṇabhūtam
19. O son of Kunti, whether I am awake or asleep, I always see only Karna. Indeed, I perceive this entire world, in every place, as having become Karna.
यत्र यत्र हि गच्छामि कर्णाद्भीतो धनंजय ।
तत्र तत्र हि पश्यामि कर्णमेवाग्रतः स्थितम् ॥२०॥
20. yatra yatra hi gacchāmi karṇādbhīto dhanaṁjaya ,
tatra tatra hi paśyāmi karṇamevāgrataḥ sthitam.
20. yatra yatra hi gacchāmi karṇāt bhītaḥ dhanaṃjaya
tatra tatra hi paśyāmi karṇam eva agrataḥ sthitam
20. dhanaṃjaya yatra yatra hi karṇāt bhītaḥ gacchāmi
tatra tatra hi agrataḥ sthitam karṇam eva paśyāmi
20. O Dhananjaya, wherever I go, fearful of Karna, there I always perceive Karna himself standing right in front of me.
सोऽहं तेनैव वीरेण समरेष्वपलायिना ।
सहयः सरथः पार्थ जित्वा जीवन्विसर्जितः ॥२१॥
21. so'haṁ tenaiva vīreṇa samareṣvapalāyinā ,
sahayaḥ sarathaḥ pārtha jitvā jīvanvisarjitaḥ.
21. saḥ aham tena eva vīreṇa samareṣu apalāyinā
sahayaḥ sarathaḥ pārtha jitvā jīvan visarjitaḥ
21. pārtha saḥ aham sahayaḥ sarathaḥ tena eva vīreṇa
samareṣu apalāyinā jitvā jīvan visarjitaḥ
21. O son of Pritha, I, this very person, with my horses and chariot, having conquered, was released alive by that very hero (Karna) who never retreats in battles.
को नु मे जीवितेनार्थो राज्येनार्थोऽथ वा पुनः ।
ममैवं धिक्कृतस्येह कर्णेनाहवशोभिना ॥२२॥
22. ko nu me jīvitenārtho rājyenārtho'tha vā punaḥ ,
mamaivaṁ dhikkṛtasyeha karṇenāhavaśobhinā.
22. kaḥ nu me jīvitena arthaḥ rājyena arthaḥ atha vā
punaḥ mama evam dhikkṛtasya iha karṇena āhavaśobhinā
22. kaḥ nu arthaḥ me jīvitena,
atha vā punaḥ arthaḥ rājyena,
evam iha āhavaśobhinā karṇena dhikkṛtasya mama?
22. What purpose do I have in life, or what use is there in a kingdom, for me who has been thus disgraced here by Karna, who shines gloriously in battle?
न प्राप्तपूर्वं यद्भीष्मात्कृपाद्द्रोणाच्च संयुगे ।
तत्प्राप्तमद्य मे युद्धे सूतपुत्रान्महारथात् ॥२३॥
23. na prāptapūrvaṁ yadbhīṣmātkṛpāddroṇācca saṁyuge ,
tatprāptamadya me yuddhe sūtaputrānmahārathāt.
23. na prāptapūrvaṃ yat bhīṣmāt kṛpāt droṇāt ca saṃyuge
tat prāptam adya me yuddhe sūtaputrāt mahārathāt
23. yat prāptapūrvaṃ bhīṣmāt kṛpāt droṇāt ca saṃyuge na,
tat adya me sūtaputrāt mahārathāt yuddhe prāptam.
23. That which I had not previously obtained from Bhishma, Kripa, and Drona in battle, that very thing I have now obtained in battle from Karna, the son of a charioteer and a great warrior.
तत्त्वा पृच्छामि कौन्तेय यथा ह्यकुशलस्तथा ।
तन्ममाचक्ष्व कार्त्स्न्येन यथा कर्णस्त्वया हतः ॥२४॥
24. tattvā pṛcchāmi kaunteya yathā hyakuśalastathā ,
tanmamācakṣva kārtsnyena yathā karṇastvayā hataḥ.
24. tat tvām pṛcchāmi kaunteya yathā hi akuśalaḥ tathā
tat mama ācakṣva kārtsnyena yathā karṇaḥ tvayā hataḥ
24. kaunteya,
tat tvām pṛcchāmi yathā hi akuśalaḥ tathā.
tat mama kārtsnyena ācakṣva,
yathā karṇaḥ tvayā hataḥ.
24. Therefore, O son of Kunti, I ask you, as if I were truly ignorant or unskilled, explain that to me completely: how was Karna slain by you?
शक्रवीर्यसमो युद्धे यमतुल्यपराक्रमः ।
रामतुल्यस्तथास्त्रे यः स कथं वै निषूदितः ॥२५॥
25. śakravīryasamo yuddhe yamatulyaparākramaḥ ,
rāmatulyastathāstre yaḥ sa kathaṁ vai niṣūditaḥ.
25. śakravīryasamaḥ yuddhe yamatulyaparākramaḥ
rāmatulyaḥ tathā astre yaḥ saḥ katham vai niṣūditaḥ
25. yaḥ yuddhe śakravīryasamaḥ,
yamatulyaparākramaḥ,
tathā astre rāmatulyaḥ,
saḥ katham vai niṣūditaḥ?
25. He who was equal to Indra in valor during battle, whose prowess matched Yama's, and who was like Rama in his skill with weapons (astra), how indeed was such a one slain?
महारथः समाख्यातः सर्वयुद्धविशारदः ।
धनुर्धराणां प्रवरः सर्वेषामेकपूरुषः ॥२६॥
26. mahārathaḥ samākhyātaḥ sarvayuddhaviśāradaḥ ,
dhanurdharāṇāṁ pravaraḥ sarveṣāmekapūruṣaḥ.
26. mahārathaḥ samākhyātaḥ sarvayuddhaviśāradaḥ
dhanurdharāṇāṃ pravaraḥ sarveṣām ekapūruṣaḥ
26. mahārathaḥ samākhyātaḥ sarvayuddhaviśāradaḥ
dhanurdharāṇāṃ pravaraḥ sarveṣām ekapūruṣaḥ
26. He was known as a great warrior, an expert in all forms of combat. Among all archers, he was considered the foremost, a unique individual (puruṣa).
पूजितो धृतराष्ट्रेण सपुत्रेण विशां पते ।
सदा त्वदर्थं राधेयः स कथं निहतस्त्वया ॥२७॥
27. pūjito dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa saputreṇa viśāṁ pate ,
sadā tvadarthaṁ rādheyaḥ sa kathaṁ nihatastvayā.
27. pūjitaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa saputreṇa viśām pate sadā
tvadartham rādheyaḥ sa katham nihataḥ tvayā
27. viśām pate sa rādheyaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa saputreṇa
pūjitaḥ sadā tvadartham katham sa tvayā nihataḥ
27. O lord of men (viśāṃ pate), he (Radheya) was honored by Dhritarashtra along with his son, and he was always your chief adversary. How then was he killed by you?
धृतराष्ट्रो हि योधेषु सर्वेष्वेव सदार्जुन ।
तव मृत्युं रणे कर्णं मन्यते पुरुषर्षभः ॥२८॥
28. dhṛtarāṣṭro hi yodheṣu sarveṣveva sadārjuna ,
tava mṛtyuṁ raṇe karṇaṁ manyate puruṣarṣabhaḥ.
28. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ hi yodheṣu sarveṣu eva sadā arjuna
tava mṛtyum raṇe karṇam manyate puruṣarṣabhaḥ
28. hi arjuna puruṣarṣabhaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ sarveṣu
eva yodheṣu sadā karṇam raṇe tava mṛtyum manyate
28. Indeed, O Arjuna, among all warriors, Dhritarashtra always considered Karna to be the cause of your death in battle, O best of men (puruṣa).
स त्वया पुरुषव्याघ्र कथं युद्धे निषूदितः ।
तं ममाचक्ष्व बीभत्सो यथा कर्णो हतस्त्वया ॥२९॥
29. sa tvayā puruṣavyāghra kathaṁ yuddhe niṣūditaḥ ,
taṁ mamācakṣva bībhatso yathā karṇo hatastvayā.
29. sa tvayā puruṣavyāghra katham yuddhe niṣūditaḥ
tam mama ācakṣva bībhatso yathā karṇaḥ hataḥ tvayā
29. puruṣavyāghra katham sa tvayā yuddhe niṣūditaḥ
bībhatso yathā karṇaḥ tvayā hataḥ tam mama ācakṣva
29. O tiger among men (puruṣa), how was he (Karna) killed by you in battle? O Bibhatsu, tell me exactly how Karna was slain by you.
सोत्सेधमस्य च शिरः पश्यतां सुहृदां हृतम् ।
त्वया पुरुषशार्दूल शार्दूलेन यथा रुरोः ॥३०॥
30. sotsedhamasya ca śiraḥ paśyatāṁ suhṛdāṁ hṛtam ,
tvayā puruṣaśārdūla śārdūlena yathā ruroḥ.
30. sa-utsedham asya ca śiraḥ paśyatām suhṛdām
hṛtam tvayā puruṣaśārdūla śārdūlena yathā ruroḥ
30. puruṣaśārdūla tvayā asya sa-utsedham śiraḥ
suhṛdām paśyatām ca hṛtam yathā śārdūlena ruroḥ
30. O tiger among men, his swollen head was severed by you, just as a tiger carries away the head of a deer, while his friends looked on.
यः पर्युपासीत्प्रदिशो दिशश्च त्वां सूतपुत्रः समरे परीप्सन् ।
दित्सुः कर्णः समरे हस्तिपूगं स हीदानीं कङ्कपत्रैः सुतीक्ष्णैः ॥३१॥
31. yaḥ paryupāsītpradiśo diśaśca; tvāṁ sūtaputraḥ samare parīpsan ,
ditsuḥ karṇaḥ samare hastipūgaṁ; sa hīdānīṁ kaṅkapatraiḥ sutīkṣṇaiḥ.
31. yaḥ pari-upāsīt pradiśaḥ diśaḥ ca
tvām sūtaputraḥ samare parīpsan
ditsuḥ karṇaḥ samare hastipūgam
saḥ hi idānīm kaṅkapatraiḥ sutīkṣṇaiḥ
31. yaḥ sūtaputraḥ karṇaḥ samare tvām parīpsan hastipūgam ditsuḥ pradiśaḥ diśaḥ ca pari-upāsīt,
saḥ hi idānīm sutīkṣṇaiḥ kaṅkapatraiḥ
31. The son of a charioteer (sūtaputra), Karna, who, desiring to attack you in battle and eager to overwhelm hosts of elephants, attended you in all directions and intermediate quarters – he now [lies pierced] by very sharp, vulture-feathered [arrows].
त्वया रणे निहतः सूतपुत्रः कच्चिच्छेते भूमितले दुरात्मा ।
कच्चित्प्रियं मे परमं त्वयाद्य कृतं रणे सूतपुत्रं निहत्य ॥३२॥
32. tvayā raṇe nihataḥ sūtaputraḥ; kaccicchete bhūmitale durātmā ,
kaccitpriyaṁ me paramaṁ tvayādya; kṛtaṁ raṇe sūtaputraṁ nihatya.
32. tvayā raṇe nihataḥ sūtaputraḥ
kaccit śete bhūmitale durātmā
kaccit priyam me paramam tvayā adya
kṛtam raṇe sūtaputram nihatya
32. kaccit tvayā raṇe nihataḥ durātmā
sūtaputraḥ bhūmitale śete?
kaccit adya raṇe sūtaputram nihatya
tvayā me paramam priyam kṛtam
32. Hopefully, that wicked-souled son of a charioteer (sūtaputra), slain by you in battle, now lies on the ground? And hopefully, today, by slaying the son of a charioteer (sūtaputra) in battle, you have accomplished what is supremely dear to me.
यः सर्वतः पर्यपतत्त्वदर्थे मदान्वितो गर्वितः सूतपुत्रः ।
स शूरमानी समरे समेत्य कच्चित्त्वया निहतः संयुगेऽद्य ॥३३॥
33. yaḥ sarvataḥ paryapatattvadarthe; madānvito garvitaḥ sūtaputraḥ ,
sa śūramānī samare sametya; kaccittvayā nihataḥ saṁyuge'dya.
33. yaḥ sarvataḥ pari-apatat tvadarthe
madānvitaḥ garvitaḥ sūtaputraḥ
saḥ śūramānī samare sametya
kaccit tvayā nihataḥ saṃyuge adya
33. kaccit tvayā adya saṃyuge nihataḥ yaḥ sūtaputraḥ madānvitaḥ garvitaḥ sarvataḥ tvadarthe pari-apatat,
saḥ śūramānī samare sametya?
33. Hopefully, that son of a charioteer (sūtaputra), who, filled with arrogance and pride, moved everywhere for your sake, and who considered himself a hero, having confronted you in battle, has he been slain by you today in combat?
रौक्मं रथं हस्तिवरैश्च युक्तं रथं दित्सुर्यः परेभ्यस्त्वदर्थे ।
सदा रणे स्पर्धते यः स पापः कच्चित्त्वया निहतस्तात युद्धे ॥३४॥
34. raukmaṁ rathaṁ hastivaraiśca yuktaṁ; rathaṁ ditsuryaḥ parebhyastvadarthe ,
sadā raṇe spardhate yaḥ sa pāpaḥ; kaccittvayā nihatastāta yuddhe.
34. raukmam ratham hastivaraiḥ ca yuktam
ratham ditsuḥ yaḥ parebhyaḥ tvadarthe
sadā raṇe spardhate yaḥ saḥ
pāpaḥ kaccit tvayā nihataḥ tāta yuddhe
34. tāta,
yaḥ pāpaḥ tvadarthe parebhyaḥ raukmam ratham ca hastivaraiḥ yuktam ratham ditsuḥ sadā raṇe spardhate,
saḥ tvayā yuddhe nihataḥ kaccit?
34. O dear one, I hope that sinner has been killed by you in battle - the one who, on your account, always contends in combat, eagerly wishing to give golden chariots and chariots equipped with excellent elephants to others.
योऽसौ नित्यं शूरमदेन मत्तो विकत्थते संसदि कौरवाणाम् ।
प्रियोऽत्यर्थं तस्य सुयोधनस्य कच्चित्स पापो निहतस्त्वयाद्य ॥३५॥
35. yo'sau nityaṁ śūramadena matto; vikatthate saṁsadi kauravāṇām ,
priyo'tyarthaṁ tasya suyodhanasya; kaccitsa pāpo nihatastvayādya.
35. yaḥ asau nityam śūramadena mattaḥ
vikatthate saṃsadi kauravāṇām
priyaḥ atyartham tasya suyodhanasya
kaccit saḥ pāpaḥ nihataḥ tvayā adya
35. adya tvayā saḥ pāpaḥ nihataḥ kaccit? yaḥ asau nityam śūramadena mattaḥ kauravāṇām saṃsadi vikatthate,
tasya suyodhanasya atyartham priyaḥ (asti).
35. I hope, by you today, that sinner has been slain - the one who, intoxicated by the arrogance of a warrior, always boasts in the assembly of the Kauravas and is exceedingly dear to Suyodhana.
कच्चित्समागम्य धनुःप्रमुक्तैस्त्वत्प्रेषितैर्लोहितार्थैर्विहंगैः ।
शेतेऽद्य पापः स विभिन्नगात्रः कच्चिद्भग्नो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य बाहुः ॥३६॥
36. kaccitsamāgamya dhanuḥpramuktai;stvatpreṣitairlohitārthairvihaṁgaiḥ ,
śete'dya pāpaḥ sa vibhinnagātraḥ; kaccidbhagno dhārtarāṣṭrasya bāhuḥ.
36. kaccit samāgamya dhanuḥpramuktaiḥ
tvatpreṣitaiḥ lohitārthaiḥ vihaṅgaiḥ
śete adya pāpaḥ saḥ vibhinnagātraḥ
kaccit bhagnaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrasya bāhuḥ
36. kaccit saḥ pāpaḥ adya tvatpreṣitaiḥ
dhanuḥpramuktaiḥ lohitārthaiḥ vihaṅgaiḥ
samāgamya vibhinnagātraḥ śete?
kaccit dhārtarāṣṭrasya bāhuḥ bhagnaḥ?
36. I hope that sinner, with his body shattered, lies dead today, having been struck by blood-thirsty 'birds' (arrows) released from your bow and dispatched by you. I also hope the arm of Dhritarashtra's son has been broken.
योऽसौ सदा श्लाघते राजमध्ये दुर्योधनं हर्षयन्दर्पपूर्णः ।
अहं हन्ता फल्गुनस्येति मोहात्कच्चिद्धतस्तस्य न वै तथा रथः ॥३७॥
37. yo'sau sadā ślāghate rājamadhye; duryodhanaṁ harṣayandarpapūrṇaḥ ,
ahaṁ hantā phalgunasyeti mohā;tkacciddhatastasya na vai tathā rathaḥ.
37. yaḥ asau sadā ślāghate rājamadhye
duryodhanam harṣayan darpapūrṇaḥ
aham hantā phalgunasya iti mohāt
kaccit hataḥ tasya na vai tathā rathaḥ
37. kaccit saḥ hataḥ? yaḥ asau darpapūrṇaḥ duryodhanam harṣayan rājamadhye sadā mohāt "aham phalgunasya hantā" iti ślāghate.

37. I hope that arrogant individual, who constantly boasts among kings, delighting Duryodhana by proclaiming out of delusion, 'I am Arjuna's killer!', has been slain. Surely his chariot, too, has not been spared in that manner?
नाहं पादौ धावयिष्ये कदाचिद्यावत्स्थितः पार्थ इत्यल्पबुद्धिः ।
व्रतं तस्यैतत्सर्वदा शक्रसूनो कच्चित्त्वया निहतः सोऽद्य कर्णः ॥३८॥
38. nāhaṁ pādau dhāvayiṣye kadāci;dyāvatsthitaḥ pārtha ityalpabuddhiḥ ,
vrataṁ tasyaitatsarvadā śakrasūno; kaccittvayā nihataḥ so'dya karṇaḥ.
38. na aham pādau dhāvayiṣye kadācit yāvat
sthitaḥ pārthaḥ iti alpabuddhiḥ |
vratam tasya etat sarvadā śakrasūno
kaccit tvayā nihataḥ saḥ adya karṇaḥ
38. śakrasūno,
kaccit tvayā adya saḥ karṇaḥ nihataḥ? yāvat alpabuddhiḥ pārthaḥ sthitaḥ iti aham pādau kadācit na dhāvayiṣye,
etat tasya vratam sarvadā.
38. O son of Indra (Arjuna), I hope that Karṇa, that foolish one, has been killed by you today, he who constantly swore: "I will never wash my feet as long as Pārtha is alive!".
योऽसौ कृष्णामब्रवीद्दुष्टबुद्धिः कर्णः सभायां कुरुवीरमध्ये ।
किं पाण्डवांस्त्वं न जहासि कृष्णे सुदुर्बलान्पतितान्हीनसत्त्वान् ॥३९॥
39. yo'sau kṛṣṇāmabravīdduṣṭabuddhiḥ; karṇaḥ sabhāyāṁ kuruvīramadhye ,
kiṁ pāṇḍavāṁstvaṁ na jahāsi kṛṣṇe; sudurbalānpatitānhīnasattvān.
39. yaḥ asau kṛṣṇām abravīt duṣṭabuddhiḥ
karṇaḥ sabhāyām kuruvīramadhye
| kim pāṇḍavān tvam na jahāsi
kṛṣṇe sudurbalān patitān hīnasattvān
39. yaḥ asau duṣṭabuddhiḥ karṇaḥ sabhāyām kuruvīramadhye kṛṣṇām abravīt: "kṛṣṇe,
kim tvam sudurbalān patitān hīnasattvān pāṇḍavān na jahāsi?"
39. That evil-minded Karṇa, who addressed Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi) in the assembly amidst the Kuru heroes, saying: "O Kṛṣṇā, why do you not abandon these Pāṇḍavas, who are extremely weak, fallen, and devoid of courage?"
यत्तत्कर्णः प्रत्यजानात्त्वदर्थे नाहत्वाहं सह कृष्णेन पार्थम् ।
इहोपयातेति स पापबुद्धिः कच्चिच्छेते शरसंभिन्नगात्रः ॥४०॥
40. yattatkarṇaḥ pratyajānāttvadarthe; nāhatvāhaṁ saha kṛṣṇena pārtham ,
ihopayāteti sa pāpabuddhiḥ; kaccicchete śarasaṁbhinnagātraḥ.
40. yat tat karṇaḥ pratyajānāt tvadarthe
| na hatvā aham saha kṛṣṇena
pārtham iha upayāte iti saḥ pāpabuddhiḥ
kaccit śete śarasaṃbhinnagātraḥ
40. kaccit saḥ pāpabuddhiḥ śarasaṃbhinnagātraḥ śete? yat tat karṇaḥ tvadarthe pratyajānāt: "na hatvā aham saha kṛṣṇena pārtham iha upayāte.
" iti.
40. That which Karṇa vowed concerning you (Draupadi): "I will not approach here unless I have slain Pārtha along with Kṛṣṇa." I hope that evil-minded one, his body pierced by arrows, now lies (dead).
कच्चित्संग्रामे विदितो वा तदायं समागमः सृञ्जयकौरवाणाम् ।
यत्रावस्थामीदृशीं प्रापितोऽहं कच्चित्त्वया सोऽद्य हतः समेत्य ॥४१॥
41. kaccitsaṁgrāme vidito vā tadāyaṁ; samāgamaḥ sṛñjayakauravāṇām ,
yatrāvasthāmīdṛśīṁ prāpito'haṁ; kaccittvayā so'dya hataḥ sametya.
41. kaccit saṃgrāme viditaḥ vā tadā ayam
samāgamaḥ sṛñjayakauravāṇām |
yatra avasthām īdṛśīm prāpitaḥ aham
kaccit tvayā saḥ adya hataḥ sametya
41. kaccit tadā saṃgrāme sṛñjayakauravāṇām ayam samāgamaḥ viditaḥ vā,
yatra aham īdṛśīm avasthām prāpitaḥ? kaccit adya tvayā sametya saḥ hataḥ?
41. I wonder, was the true nature of this gathering of Sṛñjayas and Kurus, which led me to such a deplorable state, understood in battle at that time? I hope that today, having confronted him, Karṇa has been slain by you.
कच्चित्त्वया तस्य सुमन्दबुद्धेर्गाण्डीवमुक्तैर्विशिखैर्ज्वलद्भिः ।
सकुण्डलं भानुमदुत्तमाङ्गं कायात्प्रकृत्तं युधि सव्यसाचिन् ॥४२॥
42. kaccittvayā tasya sumandabuddhe;rgāṇḍīvamuktairviśikhairjvaladbhiḥ ,
sakuṇḍalaṁ bhānumaduttamāṅgaṁ; kāyātprakṛttaṁ yudhi savyasācin.
42. kaccit tvayā tasya sumandabuddheḥ
gāṇḍīvamuktaiḥ viśikhaiḥ jvaladbhiḥ
| sakuṇḍalaṃ bhānumat uttamāṅgaṃ
kāyāt prakṛttaṃ yudhi savyasācin
42. savyasācin! kaccit yudhi tvayā gāṇḍīvamuktaiḥ jvaladbhiḥ viśikhaiḥ,
tasya sumandabuddheḥ sakuṇḍalaṃ bhānumat uttamāṅgaṃ kāyāt prakṛttaṃ?
42. O Savyasācin (Arjuna), I hope that in battle you have severed from the body of that extremely dull-witted man his brilliant head, adorned with earrings, by means of the blazing arrows released from your Gaṇḍīva bow.
यत्तन्मया बाणसमर्पितेन ध्यातोऽसि कर्णस्य वधाय वीर ।
तन्मे त्वया कच्चिदमोघमद्य ध्यातं कृतं कर्णनिपातनेन ॥४३॥
43. yattanmayā bāṇasamarpitena; dhyāto'si karṇasya vadhāya vīra ,
tanme tvayā kaccidamoghamadya; dhyātaṁ kṛtaṁ karṇanipātanena.
43. yat tat mayā bāṇasamarpitena
dhyātaḥ asi karṇasya vadhāya vīra
| tat me tvayā kaccit amogham
adya dhyātaṃ kṛtaṃ karṇanipātanena
43. vīra! yat tat mayā bāṇasamarpitena karṇasya vadhāya asi dhyātaḥ,
tat me dhyātaṃ adya tvayā karṇanipātanena kaccit amogham kṛtaṃ?
43. O hero (Arjuna), I hope that the profound meditation (dhyāna) I performed, focused on you and the offering of arrows for Karṇa's destruction, has today been fulfilled by you through the slaying of Karṇa, thus proving it unfailing.
यद्दर्पपूर्णः स सुयोधनोऽस्मानवेक्षते कर्णसमाश्रयेण ।
कच्चित्त्वया सोऽद्य समाश्रयोऽस्य भग्नः पराक्रम्य सुयोधनस्य ॥४४॥
44. yaddarpapūrṇaḥ sa suyodhano'smā;navekṣate karṇasamāśrayeṇa ,
kaccittvayā so'dya samāśrayo'sya; bhagnaḥ parākramya suyodhanasya.
44. yat darpapūrṇaḥ saḥ suyodhanaḥ
asmān avekṣate karṇasamāśrayeṇa |
kaccit tvayā saḥ adya samāśrayaḥ
asya bhagnaḥ parākramya suyodhanasya
44. yat darpapūrṇaḥ saḥ suyodhanaḥ karṇasamāśrayeṇa asmān avekṣate,
kaccit tvayā adya parākramya asya suyodhanasya saḥ samāśrayaḥ bhagnaḥ?
44. Because that Suyodhana, full of pride, looks down upon us relying on Karṇa, I hope that today you have valiantly shattered that foundation of Suyodhana's confidence.
यो नः पुरा षण्ढतिलानवोचत्सभामध्ये पार्थिवानां समक्षम् ।
स दुर्मतिः कच्चिदुपेत्य संख्ये त्वया हतः सूतपुत्रोऽत्यमर्षी ॥४५॥
45. yo naḥ purā ṣaṇḍhatilānavoca;tsabhāmadhye pārthivānāṁ samakṣam ,
sa durmatiḥ kaccidupetya saṁkhye; tvayā hataḥ sūtaputro'tyamarṣī.
45. yaḥ naḥ purā ṣaṇḍhatilān avocata
sabhāmadhye pārthivānāṃ samakṣam
| saḥ durmatiḥ kaccit upetya saṅkhye
tvayā hataḥ sūtaputraḥ atyamarṣī
45. yaḥ atyamarṣī sūtaputraḥ durmatiḥ purā pārthivānāṃ samakṣam sabhāmadhye naḥ ṣaṇḍhatilān avocata,
saḥ kaccit tvayā saṅkhye upetya hataḥ?
45. I hope that the wicked Karṇa, that extremely arrogant son of a charioteer, who formerly, in the assembly and in the presence of kings, called us 'eunuch-sesame seeds' (implying uselessness), has been killed by you today, having faced him in battle.
यः सूतपुत्रः प्रहसन्दुरात्मा पुराब्रवीन्निर्जितां सौबलेन ।
स्वयं प्रसह्यानय याज्ञसेनीमपीह कच्चित्स हतस्त्वयाद्य ॥४६॥
46. yaḥ sūtaputraḥ prahasandurātmā; purābravīnnirjitāṁ saubalena ,
svayaṁ prasahyānaya yājñasenī;mapīha kaccitsa hatastvayādya.
46. यः सूतपुत्रः प्रहसन् दुरात्मा
पुरा अब्रवीत् निर्जिताम् सौबलेन
स्वयम् प्रसह्य आनय याज्ञसेनीम्
अपि इह कच्चित् सः हतः त्वया अद्य
46. कच्चित् त्वया अद्य सः दुरात्मा
सूतपुत्रः हतः यः पुरा प्रहसन्
"सौबलेन निर्जिताम् याज्ञसेनीम्
स्वयम् प्रसह्य इह आनय" अब्रवीत् अपि
46. Has that evil-minded son of a charioteer (sūtaputra), who formerly laughed and declared, 'She has been won by the son of Subala; bring Yājñasenī by force yourself!' - has he been killed by you here today?
यः शस्त्रभृच्छ्रेष्ठतमं पृथिव्यां पितामहं व्याक्षिपदल्पचेताः ।
संख्यायमानोऽर्धरथः स कच्चित्त्वया हतोऽद्याधिरथिर्दुरात्मा ॥४७॥
47. yaḥ śastrabhṛcchreṣṭhatamaṁ pṛthivyāṁ; pitāmahaṁ vyākṣipadalpacetāḥ ,
saṁkhyāyamāno'rdharathaḥ sa kacci;ttvayā hato'dyādhirathirdurātmā.
47. यः शस्त्रभृच्छ्रेष्ठतमम् पृथिव्याम्
पितामहम् व्याक्षिपत् अल्पचेताः
संख्यायमानः अर्धरथः सः कच्चित्
त्वया हतः अद्य अधिरथिः दुरात्मा
47. कच्चित् त्वया अद्य सः दुरात्मा
अधिरथिः हतः यः अल्पचेताः सन् पृथिव्याम्
शस्त्रभृच्छ्रेष्ठतमम् पितामहम्
व्याक्षिपत् [यः] संख्यायमानः अर्धरथः
47. Has that evil-minded charioteer's son (adhirathi), who, with his meager intellect (alpacetas), insulted the grandsire (Bhīṣma), the most excellent of all weapon-bearers on earth, and who was himself accounted merely a 'half-chariot warrior' (ardharatha) - has he been killed by you today?
अमर्षणं निकृतिसमीरणेरितं हृदि श्रितं ज्वलनमिमं सदा मम ।
हतो मया सोऽद्य समेत्य पापधीरिति ब्रुवन्प्रशमय मेऽद्य फल्गुन ॥४८॥
48. amarṣaṇaṁ nikṛtisamīraṇeritaṁ; hṛdi śritaṁ jvalanamimaṁ sadā mama ,
hato mayā so'dya sametya pāpadhī;riti bruvanpraśamaya me'dya phalguna.
48. अमर्षणम् निकृतिसमीरणेरितम् हृदि
श्रितम् ज्वलनम् इमम् सदा मम
हतः मया सः अद्य समेत्य पापधीः
इति ब्रुवन् प्रशमय मे अद्य फल्गुन
48. फल्गुन,
अद्य मम हृदि श्रितम् सदा निकृतिसमीरणेरितम् इमम् अमर्षणम् ज्वलनम् "सः पापधीः मया अद्य समेत्य हतः" इति ब्रुवन् मे प्रशमय
48. O Phalguna (Arjuna), please quell for me today this unbearable fire (jvalana) that always dwells in my heart, agitated by the wind of deceit (nikṛti-samīraṇa), by saying, 'That evil-minded (pāpadhī) fellow has been killed by me today!'
