भीष्म उवाच ।
ततः कदाचिद्देवेन्द्रो दिव्यरूपवपुर्धरः ।
इदमन्तरमित्येवं ततोऽभ्यागादथाश्रमम् ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tataḥ kadāciddevendro divyarūpavapurdharaḥ ,
idamantaramityevaṁ tato'bhyāgādathāśramam.

1. Bhīṣma said: Then, one day, Indra (devendra), assuming a divine form, approached the hermitage, considering, 'This is the opportune moment.'
रूपमप्रतिमं कृत्वा लोभनीयं जनाधिप ।
दर्शनीयतमो भूत्वा प्रविवेश तमाश्रमम् ॥२॥
2. rūpamapratimaṁ kṛtvā lobhanīyaṁ janādhipa ,
darśanīyatamo bhūtvā praviveśa tamāśramam.
2. rūpam apratimam kṛtvā lobhanīyam janādhipa
darśanīyatamaḥ bhūtvā praviveśa tam āśramam
2. janādhipa apratimam lobhanīyam rūpam kṛtvā

2. O lord of men (janādhipa), having assumed an unrivaled and alluring form, and becoming most beautiful to behold, he entered that hermitage.
स ददर्श तमासीनं विपुलस्य कलेवरम् ।
निश्चेष्टं स्तब्धनयनं यथालेख्यगतं तथा ॥३॥
3. sa dadarśa tamāsīnaṁ vipulasya kalevaram ,
niśceṣṭaṁ stabdhanayanaṁ yathālekhyagataṁ tathā.
3. sa dadarśa tam āsīnam vipulasya kalevaram
niśceṣṭam stabdhanayanam yathā ālekhyagatam tathā
3. He saw him seated - the body of a mighty one - motionless, with fixed eyes, just like a figure in a painting.
रुचिं च रुचिरापाङ्गीं पीनश्रोणिपयोधराम् ।
पद्मपत्रविशालाक्षीं संपूर्णेन्दुनिभाननाम् ॥४॥
4. ruciṁ ca rucirāpāṅgīṁ pīnaśroṇipayodharām ,
padmapatraviśālākṣīṁ saṁpūrṇendunibhānanām.
4. rucim ca rucirāpāṅgīm pīnaśroṇipayodharām
padmapatraviśālākṣīm sampūrṇendunibhānanām
4. And [he saw] a radiant woman, with beautiful corners of her eyes, having full hips and breasts, with wide eyes like lotus petals, and a face resembling the full moon.
सा तमालोक्य सहसा प्रत्युत्थातुमियेष ह ।
रूपेण विस्मिता कोऽसीत्यथ वक्तुमिहेच्छती ॥५॥
5. sā tamālokya sahasā pratyutthātumiyeṣa ha ,
rūpeṇa vismitā ko'sītyatha vaktumihecchatī.
5. sā tam ālokya sahasā pratyutthātum iyeṣa ha rūpeṇa
vismitā kaḥ asi iti atha vaktum iha icchatī
5. As she saw him, she suddenly wished to rise. Astonished by his form, she then desired to say, 'Who are you?'
उत्थातुकामापि सती व्यतिष्ठद्विपुलेन सा ।
निगृहीता मनुष्येन्द्र न शशाक विचेष्टितुम् ॥६॥
6. utthātukāmāpi satī vyatiṣṭhadvipulena sā ,
nigṛhītā manuṣyendra na śaśāka viceṣṭitum.
6. utthātu-kāmā api satī vyatiṣṭhat vipulena sā
nigṛhītā manuṣyendra na śaśāka viceṣṭitum
6. Even though she desired to rise, she remained restrained by the mighty one, O lord of men, and was unable to move.
तामाबभाषे देवेन्द्रः साम्ना परमवल्गुना ।
त्वदर्थमागतं विद्धि देवेन्द्रं मां शुचिस्मिते ॥७॥
7. tāmābabhāṣe devendraḥ sāmnā paramavalgunā ,
tvadarthamāgataṁ viddhi devendraṁ māṁ śucismite.
7. tām ābabhāṣe devendraḥ sāmnā parama-valgunā
tvat-artham āgatam viddhi devendram mām śuci-smite
7. devendraḥ parama-valgunā sāmnā tām ābabhāṣe śuci-smite,
tvat-artham āgatam mām devendram viddhi
7. The lord of the gods addressed her with extremely pleasing words: 'O pure-smiling one, know that I, the lord of the gods, have come for your sake.'
क्लिश्यमानमनङ्गेन त्वत्संकल्पोद्भवेन वै ।
तत्पर्याप्नुहि मां सुभ्रु पुरा कालोऽतिवर्तते ॥८॥
8. kliśyamānamanaṅgena tvatsaṁkalpodbhavena vai ,
tatparyāpnuhi māṁ subhru purā kālo'tivartate.
8. kliśyamānam anaṅgena tvat-saṅkalpa-udbhavena vai
tat paryāpnuhi mām subhru purā kālaḥ ativartate
8. vai tvat-saṅkalpa-udbhavena anaṅgena kliśyamānam
tat subhru mām paryāpnuhi purā kālaḥ ativartate
8. Indeed, I am being tormented by the god of love (anaṅga), who is born from your very intention. Therefore, O beautiful-browed one, accept me before time runs out.
तमेवंवादिनं शक्रं शुश्राव विपुलो मुनिः ।
गुरुपत्न्याः शरीरस्थो ददर्श च सुराधिपम् ॥९॥
9. tamevaṁvādinaṁ śakraṁ śuśrāva vipulo muniḥ ,
gurupatnyāḥ śarīrastho dadarśa ca surādhipam.
9. tam evam-vādinaṃ śakram śuśrāva vipulaḥ muniḥ
guru-patnyāḥ śarīra-sthaḥ dadarśa ca sura-adhipam
9. guru-patnyāḥ śarīra-sthaḥ vipulaḥ muniḥ tam
evam-vādinaṃ śakram śuśrāva ca sura-adhipam dadarśa
9. The sage (muni) Vipula, residing within the body of his guru's wife, heard Indra speaking thus and also saw the lord of the gods.
न शशाक च सा राजन्प्रत्युत्थातुमनिन्दिता ।
वक्तुं च नाशकद्राजन्विष्टब्धा विपुलेन सा ॥१०॥
10. na śaśāka ca sā rājanpratyutthātumaninditā ,
vaktuṁ ca nāśakadrājanviṣṭabdhā vipulena sā.
10. na śaśāka ca sā rājan pratyutthātum aninditā
vaktum ca na aśakat rājan viṣṭabdhā vipulena sā
10. rājan sā aninditā ca pratyutthātum na śaśāka
rājan vipulena viṣṭabdhā sā ca vaktum na aśakat
10. O King, that faultless woman was unable to rise up, nor could she speak, for she was held firm by Vipula.
आकारं गुरुपत्न्यास्तु विज्ञाय स भृगूद्वहः ।
निजग्राह महातेजा योगेन बलवत्प्रभो ।
बबन्ध योगबन्धैश्च तस्याः सर्वेन्द्रियाणि सः ॥११॥
11. ākāraṁ gurupatnyāstu vijñāya sa bhṛgūdvahaḥ ,
nijagrāha mahātejā yogena balavatprabho ,
babandha yogabandhaiśca tasyāḥ sarvendriyāṇi saḥ.
11. ākāram gurupatnyāḥ tu vijñāya saḥ
bhṛgūdvahaḥ mahātejāḥ nijagrāha
yogena balavat prabho babandha
yogabandhaiḥ ca tasyāḥ sarvendriyāṇi saḥ
11. saḥ mahātejāḥ bhṛgūdvahaḥ gurupatnyāḥ ākāram vijñāya tu nijagrāha (he) prabho,
saḥ balavat yogena ca yogabandhaiḥ tasyāḥ sarvendriyāṇi babandha
11. Having perceived the intention of the guru's wife, that greatly resplendent descendant of Bhṛgu (Śukra) restrained her. O powerful one! He powerfully bound all her senses with the bonds of spiritual discipline (yoga).
तां निर्विकारां दृष्ट्वा तु पुनरेव शचीपतिः ।
उवाच व्रीडितो राजंस्तां योगबलमोहिताम् ॥१२॥
12. tāṁ nirvikārāṁ dṛṣṭvā tu punareva śacīpatiḥ ,
uvāca vrīḍito rājaṁstāṁ yogabalamohitām.
12. tām nirvikārām dṛṣṭvā tu punareva śacīpatiḥ
uvāca vrīḍitaḥ rājan tām yogabalamohitām
12. rājan,
nirvikārām yogabalamohitām tām dṛṣṭvā tu śacīpatiḥ vrīḍitaḥ punareva tām uvāca
12. O king, having seen her unperturbed, Śacī's husband (Indra), ashamed, again spoke to her, who was bewildered by the power of (yoga) spiritual discipline.
एह्येहीति ततः सा तं प्रतिवक्तुमियेष च ।
स तां वाचं गुरोः पत्न्या विपुलः पर्यवर्तयत् ॥१३॥
13. ehyehīti tataḥ sā taṁ prativaktumiyeṣa ca ,
sa tāṁ vācaṁ guroḥ patnyā vipulaḥ paryavartayat.
13. ehyehi iti tataḥ sā tam prativaktum iyeṣa ca saḥ
tām vācam guroḥ patnyāḥ vipulaḥ paryavartayat
13. tataḥ sā 'ehyehi' iti tam prativaktum iyeṣa ca
saḥ vipulaḥ guror patnyāḥ tām vācam paryavartayat
13. Then, as she intended to reply to him, saying 'Come, come!', he (Śukra), by his great power, diverted that speech of the guru's wife.
भोः किमागमने कृत्यमिति तस्याश्च निःसृता ।
वक्त्राच्छशाङ्कप्रतिमाद्वाणी संस्कारभूषिता ॥१४॥
14. bhoḥ kimāgamane kṛtyamiti tasyāśca niḥsṛtā ,
vaktrācchaśāṅkapratimādvāṇī saṁskārabhūṣitā.
14. bhoḥ kim āgamane kṛtyam iti tasyāḥ ca niḥsṛtā
vaktrāt śaśāṅkapratimāt vāṇī saṃskārabhūṣitā
14. ca tasyāḥ śaśāṅkapratimāt vaktrāt saṃskārabhūṣitā vāṇī 'bhoḥ,
āgamane kim kṛtyam' iti niḥsṛtā
14. And then, from her moon-like mouth, a speech, adorned with refinement, emerged, saying: 'Oh, what is the purpose of (your) arrival?'
व्रीडिता सा तु तद्वाक्यमुक्त्वा परवशा तदा ।
पुरंदरश्च संत्रस्तो बभूव विमनास्तदा ॥१५॥
15. vrīḍitā sā tu tadvākyamuktvā paravaśā tadā ,
puraṁdaraśca saṁtrasto babhūva vimanāstadā.
15. vrīḍitā sā tu tat vākyam uktvā paravaśā tadā
purandaraḥ ca saṃtrastaḥ babhūva vimanāḥ tadā
15. sā vrīḍitā tu tat vākyam uktvā tadā paravaśā
purandaraḥ ca tadā saṃtrastaḥ vimanāḥ babhūva
15. She, feeling ashamed, spoke those words, and then became overpowered. At that time, Indra too became greatly terrified and distraught.
स तद्वैकृतमालक्ष्य देवराजो विशां पते ।
अवैक्षत सहस्राक्षस्तदा दिव्येन चक्षुषा ॥१६॥
16. sa tadvaikṛtamālakṣya devarājo viśāṁ pate ,
avaikṣata sahasrākṣastadā divyena cakṣuṣā.
16. saḥ tat vaikṛtam ālakṣya devarājaḥ viśām pate
avaikṣata sahasrākṣaḥ tadā divyena cakṣuṣā
16. viśām pate saḥ devarājaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ tat
vaikṛtam ālakṣya tadā divyena cakṣuṣā avaikṣata
16. O lord of the people, perceiving that unnatural change, the king of gods (Indra), the thousand-eyed one, then observed it with his divine eye.
ददर्श च मुनिं तस्याः शरीरान्तरगोचरम् ।
प्रतिबिम्बमिवादर्शे गुरुपत्न्याः शरीरगम् ॥१७॥
17. dadarśa ca muniṁ tasyāḥ śarīrāntaragocaram ,
pratibimbamivādarśe gurupatnyāḥ śarīragam.
17. dadarśa ca munim tasyāḥ śarīrāntaragocaram
pratibimbam iva ādarśe gurupatnyāḥ śarīragam
17. ca [saḥ] tasyāḥ gurupatnyāḥ śarīragam
śarīrāntaragocaram munim ādarśe pratibimbam iva dadarśa
17. And he saw the sage (Gautama), perceptible within her body (Ahalya's), like a reflection in a mirror, the one residing in the body of the guru's wife.
स तं घोरेण तपसा युक्तं दृष्ट्वा पुरंदरः ।
प्रावेपत सुसंत्रस्तः शापभीतस्तदा विभो ॥१८॥
18. sa taṁ ghoreṇa tapasā yuktaṁ dṛṣṭvā puraṁdaraḥ ,
prāvepata susaṁtrastaḥ śāpabhītastadā vibho.
18. saḥ tam ghoreṇa tapasā yuktam dṛṣṭvā purandaraḥ
prāvepata susaṃtrastaḥ śāpabhītaḥ tadā vibho
18. vibho saḥ purandaraḥ tam ghoreṇa tapasā yuktam
dṛṣṭvā tadā susaṃtrastaḥ śāpabhītaḥ prāvepata
18. O mighty one, upon seeing him (the sage) engaged in severe asceticism (tapas), Indra trembled greatly, exceedingly terrified and fearful of a curse at that time.
विमुच्य गुरुपत्नीं तु विपुलः सुमहातपाः ।
स्वं कलेवरमाविश्य शक्रं भीतमथाब्रवीत् ॥१९॥
19. vimucya gurupatnīṁ tu vipulaḥ sumahātapāḥ ,
svaṁ kalevaramāviśya śakraṁ bhītamathābravīt.
19. vimucya gurupatnīm tu vipulaḥ sumahātapāḥ svam
kalevaram āviśya śakram bhītam atha abravīt
19. Vipula, endowed with immense spiritual power (tapas), after releasing the guru's wife and re-entering his own body, then spoke to the frightened Indra.
अजितेन्द्रिय पापात्मन्कामात्मक पुरंदर ।
न चिरं पूजयिष्यन्ति देवास्त्वां मानुषास्तथा ॥२०॥
20. ajitendriya pāpātmankāmātmaka puraṁdara ,
na ciraṁ pūjayiṣyanti devāstvāṁ mānuṣāstathā.
20. ajitendriya pāpātman kāmātmaka purandara na
ciram pūjayiṣyanti devāḥ tvām mānuṣāḥ tathā
20. O you whose senses are uncontrolled, O sinful soul, O one whose very nature is desire, O Indra (Purandara), neither the gods nor humans will worship you for long.
किं नु तद्विस्मृतं शक्र न तन्मनसि ते स्थितम् ।
गौतमेनासि यन्मुक्तो भगाङ्कपरिचिह्नितः ॥२१॥
21. kiṁ nu tadvismṛtaṁ śakra na tanmanasi te sthitam ,
gautamenāsi yanmukto bhagāṅkaparicihnitaḥ.
21. kim nu tat vismṛtam śakra na tat manasi te sthitam
gautamena asi yat muktaḥ bhagāṅkaparicihnitaḥ
21. O Indra, have you indeed forgotten that, or does it not remain in your memory, that you were released by Gautama, marked with the sign of a vulva?
जाने त्वां बालिशमतिमकृतात्मानमस्थिरम् ।
मयेयं रक्ष्यते मूढ गच्छ पाप यथागतम् ॥२२॥
22. jāne tvāṁ bāliśamatimakṛtātmānamasthiram ,
mayeyaṁ rakṣyate mūḍha gaccha pāpa yathāgatam.
22. jāne tvām bāliśamatim akṛtātmānam asthiram mayā
iyam rakṣyate mūḍha gaccha pāpa yathāgatam
22. I know you to be childish, with an uncultivated inner self (ātman), and fickle. This woman is protected by me, O foolish and wicked one; go back the way you came.
नाहं त्वामद्य मूढात्मन्दहेयं हि स्वतेजसा ।
कृपायमाणस्तु न ते दग्धुमिच्छामि वासव ॥२३॥
23. nāhaṁ tvāmadya mūḍhātmandaheyaṁ hi svatejasā ,
kṛpāyamāṇastu na te dagdhumicchāmi vāsava.
23. na aham tvām adya mūḍhātman daheyam hi svatejasā
kṛpāyamāṇaḥ tu na te dagdhum icchāmi vāsava
23. O foolish-minded one, I could indeed burn you today with my own power (tejas), but out of compassion, O Vāsava, I do not wish to burn you.
स च घोरतपा धीमान्गुरुर्मे पापचेतसम् ।
दृष्ट्वा त्वां निर्दहेदद्य क्रोधदीप्तेन चक्षुषा ॥२४॥
24. sa ca ghoratapā dhīmāngururme pāpacetasam ,
dṛṣṭvā tvāṁ nirdahedadya krodhadīptena cakṣuṣā.
24. saḥ ca ghoratapaḥ dhīmān guruḥ me pāpacetasam
dṛṣṭvā tvām nirdahet adya krodhadīptena cakṣuṣā
24. And my wise (dhīmān) preceptor (guru), who performs severe austerities (tapas), having seen you, the evil-minded one, would burn you today with an eye blazing with anger.
नैवं तु शक्र कर्तव्यं पुनर्मान्याश्च ते द्विजाः ।
मा गमः ससुतामात्योऽत्ययं ब्रह्मबलार्दितः ॥२५॥
25. naivaṁ tu śakra kartavyaṁ punarmānyāśca te dvijāḥ ,
mā gamaḥ sasutāmātyo'tyayaṁ brahmabalārditaḥ.
25. na evam tu śakra kartavyam punaḥ mānyāḥ ca te dvijāḥ
mā gamaḥ sasutāmātyaḥ atyayam brahmabalārditaḥ
25. But, O Śakra, this should not be done again, for your twice-born (dvija) are venerable. Do not, along with your sons and ministers, come to ruin, afflicted by the power of the Brahmins.
अमरोऽस्मीति यद्बुद्धिमेतामास्थाय वर्तसे ।
मावमंस्था न तपसामसाध्यं नाम किंचन ॥२६॥
26. amaro'smīti yadbuddhimetāmāsthāya vartase ,
māvamaṁsthā na tapasāmasādhyaṁ nāma kiṁcana.
26. amaraḥ asmi iti yat buddhim etām āsthāya vartase
mā avamaṃsthāḥ na tapasām asādhyam nāma kiṃcana
26. Because you act having held onto this idea: 'I am immortal,' do not disrespect (others), for truly, nothing is impossible through spiritual austerities (tapas).
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं शक्रो विपुलस्य महात्मनः ।
अकिंचिदुक्त्वा व्रीडितस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥२७॥
27. tacchrutvā vacanaṁ śakro vipulasya mahātmanaḥ ,
akiṁciduktvā vrīḍitastatraivāntaradhīyata.
27. tat śrutvā vacanam śakraḥ vipulasya mahātmanaḥ
akiñcit uktvā vrīḍitaḥ tatra eva antaradhīyata
27. mahātmanaḥ vipulasya tat vacanam śrutvā śakraḥ
akiñcit uktvā vrīḍitaḥ tatra eva antaradhīyata
27. Having heard those words from the great-souled Vipula, Indra, without saying anything, became ashamed and disappeared then and there.
मुहूर्तयाते शक्रे तु देवशर्मा महातपाः ।
कृत्वा यज्ञं यथाकाममाजगाम स्वमाश्रमम् ॥२८॥
28. muhūrtayāte śakre tu devaśarmā mahātapāḥ ,
kṛtvā yajñaṁ yathākāmamājagāma svamāśramam.
28. muhūrta yāte śakre tu devaśarmā mahātapāḥ
kṛtvā yajñam yathākāmam ājagāma svam āśramam
28. śakre muhūrta yāte tu mahātapāḥ devaśarmā
yathākāmam yajñam kṛtvā svam āśramam ājagāma
28. When Indra had departed for a short while, Devasharman, who possessed great ascetic power, having performed the Vedic ritual (yajña) according to his desire, returned to his own hermitage (āśrama).
आगतेऽथ गुरौ राजन्विपुलः प्रियकर्मकृत् ।
रक्षितां गुरवे भार्यां न्यवेदयदनिन्दिताम् ॥२९॥
29. āgate'tha gurau rājanvipulaḥ priyakarmakṛt ,
rakṣitāṁ gurave bhāryāṁ nyavedayadaninditām.
29. āgate atha gurau rājan vipulaḥ priyakarmakṛt
rakṣitām gurave bhāryām nyavedayat aninditām
29. rājan atha gurau āgate priyakarmakṛt vipulaḥ
rakṣitām aninditām bhāryām gurave nyavedayat
29. O King, when the preceptor had returned, Vipula, who always performed pleasing duties, presented the blameless wife, whom he had protected, to his preceptor.
अभिवाद्य च शान्तात्मा स गुरुं गुरुवत्सलः ।
विपुलः पर्युपातिष्ठद्यथापूर्वमशङ्कितः ॥३०॥
30. abhivādya ca śāntātmā sa guruṁ guruvatsalaḥ ,
vipulaḥ paryupātiṣṭhadyathāpūrvamaśaṅkitaḥ.
30. abhivādya ca śāntātmā sa gurum guruvatsalaḥ
vipulaḥ paryupātiṣṭhat yathāpūrvam aśaṅkitaḥ
30. ca śāntātmā guruvatsalaḥ sa vipulaḥ gurum
abhivādya yathāpūrvam aśaṅkitaḥ paryupātiṣṭhat
30. And having respectfully saluted the preceptor (guru), Vipula, tranquil in spirit and devoted to his guru, attended upon him as before, without any apprehension.
विश्रान्ताय ततस्तस्मै सहासीनाय भार्यया ।
निवेदयामास तदा विपुलः शक्रकर्म तत् ॥३१॥
31. viśrāntāya tatastasmai sahāsīnāya bhāryayā ,
nivedayāmāsa tadā vipulaḥ śakrakarma tat.
31. viśrāntāya tataḥ tasmai sahāsīnāya bhāryayā
nivedayāmāsa tadā vipulaḥ śakrakarma tat
31. vipulaḥ tadā tataḥ śakrakarma tat viśrāntāya
bhāryayā sahāsīnāya tasmai nivedayāmāsa
31. Then, Vipula reported that act of Indra to him, who had rested and was seated with his wife.
तच्छ्रुत्वा स मुनिस्तुष्टो विपुलस्य प्रतापवान् ।
बभूव शीलवृत्ताभ्यां तपसा नियमेन च ॥३२॥
32. tacchrutvā sa munistuṣṭo vipulasya pratāpavān ,
babhūva śīlavṛttābhyāṁ tapasā niyamena ca.
32. tat śrutvā saḥ muniḥ tuṣṭaḥ vipulasya pratāpavān
babhūva śīlavṛttābhyām tapasā niyamena ca
32. saḥ pratāpavān muniḥ tat śrutvā vipulasya
śīlavṛttābhyām tapasā niyamena ca tuṣṭaḥ babhūva
32. Having heard that, the glorious sage was pleased with Vipula on account of his excellent character, conduct, asceticism (tapas), and self-discipline.
विपुलस्य गुरौ वृत्तिं भक्तिमात्मनि च प्रभुः ।
धर्मे च स्थिरतां दृष्ट्वा साधु साध्वित्युवाच ह ॥३३॥
33. vipulasya gurau vṛttiṁ bhaktimātmani ca prabhuḥ ,
dharme ca sthiratāṁ dṛṣṭvā sādhu sādhvityuvāca ha.
33. vipulasya gurau vṛttim bhaktim ātmani ca prabhuḥ
dharme ca sthiratām dṛṣṭvā sādhu sādhu iti uvāca ha
33. prabhuḥ vipulasya gurau vṛttim ātmani ca bhaktim
dharme ca sthiratām dṛṣṭvā sādhu sādhu iti ha uvāca
33. Having observed Vipula's respectful conduct towards his guru, his devotion (bhakti) towards the sage's own self (ātman), and his steadfastness in natural law (dharma), the master (prabhu) exclaimed, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
प्रतिनन्द्य च धर्मात्मा शिष्यं धर्मपरायणम् ।
वरेण च्छन्दयामास स तस्माद्गुरुवत्सलः ।
अनुज्ञातश्च गुरुणा चचारानुत्तमं तपः ॥३४॥
34. pratinandya ca dharmātmā śiṣyaṁ dharmaparāyaṇam ,
vareṇa cchandayāmāsa sa tasmādguruvatsalaḥ ,
anujñātaśca guruṇā cacārānuttamaṁ tapaḥ.

dharmaparāyaṇam vareṇa cchandayāmāsa
saḥ tasmāt guruvatsalaḥ anujñātaḥ
ca guruṇā cacāra anuttamam tapaḥ
34. dharmātmā ca dharmaparāyaṇam śiṣyam
pratinandya vareṇa cchandayāmāsa
saḥ guruvatsalaḥ tasmāt guruṇā
ca anujñātaḥ anuttamam tapaḥ cacāra
34. And the righteous-souled (dharmātmā) guru, having acknowledged his disciple who was fully dedicated to natural law (dharma), gratified him with a boon. That disciple, devoted to his guru, having received permission from the guru, then practiced unsurpassed asceticism (tapas).
तथैव देवशर्मापि सभार्यः स महातपाः ।
निर्भयो बलवृत्रघ्नाच्चचार विजने वने ॥३५॥
35. tathaiva devaśarmāpi sabhāryaḥ sa mahātapāḥ ,
nirbhayo balavṛtraghnāccacāra vijane vane.
35. tathā eva devaśarmā api sa-bhāryaḥ saḥ mahā-tapāḥ
nirbhayaḥ balavṛtraghsnāt cacāra vijane vane
35. tathā eva saḥ mahā-tapāḥ devaśarmā api sa-bhāryaḥ
balavṛtraghsnāt nirbhayaḥ vijane vane cacāra
35. Similarly, Devasharma, that great ascetic (tapas), along with his wife, wandered fearlessly in a solitary forest, even from Indra.
