बृहदश्व उवाच ।
दमयन्ती ततो दृष्ट्वा पुण्यश्लोकं नराधिपम् ।
उन्मत्तवदनुन्मत्ता देवने गतचेतसम् ॥१॥
1. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
damayantī tato dṛṣṭvā puṇyaślokaṁ narādhipam ,
unmattavadanunmattā devane gatacetasam.

1. Brihadashva said: Then Damayanti, though not insane herself, seeing the king (narādhipam) whose fame was pure (puṇyaśloka), behaving like a madman and whose mind was engrossed in gambling...
भयशोकसमाविष्टा राजन्भीमसुता ततः ।
चिन्तयामास तत्कार्यं सुमहत्पार्थिवं प्रति ॥२॥
2. bhayaśokasamāviṣṭā rājanbhīmasutā tataḥ ,
cintayāmāsa tatkāryaṁ sumahatpārthivaṁ prati.
2. bhayaśokasamāviṣṭā rājan bhīmasutā tataḥ |
cintayāmāsa tat kāryaṃ sumahat pārthivaṃ prati
2. O king, then the daughter of Bhima (Bhīmasutā), overwhelmed by fear and sorrow, pondered that very grave matter concerning the king.
सा शङ्कमाना तत्पापं चिकीर्षन्ती च तत्प्रियम् ।
नलं च हृतसर्वस्वमुपलभ्येदमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. sā śaṅkamānā tatpāpaṁ cikīrṣantī ca tatpriyam ,
nalaṁ ca hṛtasarvasvamupalabhyedamabravīt.
3. sā śaṅkamānā tat pāpaṃ cikīrṣantī ca tat priyam
| nalaṃ ca hṛtasarvasvam upalabhya idam abravīt
3. She, apprehending that impending misfortune and wishing for his (Nala's) well-being, and seeing Nala who had lost all his possessions, then spoke these words.
बृहत्सेने व्रजामात्यानानाय्य नलशासनात् ।
आचक्ष्व यद्धृतं द्रव्यमवशिष्टं च यद्वसु ॥४॥
4. bṛhatsene vrajāmātyānānāyya nalaśāsanāt ,
ācakṣva yaddhṛtaṁ dravyamavaśiṣṭaṁ ca yadvasu.
4. bṛhatsene vraja amātyān ānāyya nalaśāsanāt |
ācakṣva yat hṛtaṃ dravyam avaśiṣṭaṃ ca yat vasu
4. O Brihatsena, go and, by the king's (Nala's) order, summon the ministers. Then report what wealth has been lost and what riches remain.
ततस्ते मन्त्रिणः सर्वे विज्ञाय नलशासनम् ।
अपि नो भागधेयं स्यादित्युक्त्वा पुनराव्रजन् ॥५॥
5. tataste mantriṇaḥ sarve vijñāya nalaśāsanam ,
api no bhāgadheyaṁ syādityuktvā punarāvrajan.
5. tataḥ te mantriṇaḥ sarve vijñāya nala-śāsanam
api naḥ bhāgadheyam syāt iti uktvā punaḥ āvrajan
5. Then all those ministers, having understood King Nala's command, said, "Perhaps this will also be our share (bhāgadheya)?" and returned.
तास्तु सर्वाः प्रकृतयो द्वितीयं समुपस्थिताः ।
न्यवेदयद्भीमसुता न च तत्प्रत्यनन्दत ॥६॥
6. tāstu sarvāḥ prakṛtayo dvitīyaṁ samupasthitāḥ ,
nyavedayadbhīmasutā na ca tatpratyanandata.
6. tāḥ tu sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ dvitīyam samupasthitāḥ
nyavedayat bhīma-sutā na ca tat pratyanandata
6. But all those subjects (prakṛti) approached him a second time. Bhīma's daughter (Damayantī) informed him, but he did not approve of that.
वाक्यमप्रतिनन्दन्तं भर्तारमभिवीक्ष्य सा ।
दमयन्ती पुनर्वेश्म व्रीडिता प्रविवेश ह ॥७॥
7. vākyamapratinandantaṁ bhartāramabhivīkṣya sā ,
damayantī punarveśma vrīḍitā praviveśa ha.
7. vākyam apratinandantam bhartāram abhivīkṣya
sā damayantī punaḥ veśma vrīḍitā praviveśa ha
7. Seeing her husband not approving of her words, Damayantī, embarrassed, entered the house again.
निशम्य सततं चाक्षान्पुण्यश्लोकपराङ्मुखान् ।
नलं च हृतसर्वस्वं धात्रीं पुनरुवाच ह ॥८॥
8. niśamya satataṁ cākṣānpuṇyaślokaparāṅmukhān ,
nalaṁ ca hṛtasarvasvaṁ dhātrīṁ punaruvāca ha.
8. niśamya satatam ca akṣān puṇyaśloka-parāṅmukhān
nalam ca hṛta-sarvasvam dhātrīm punaḥ uvāca ha
8. Having constantly heard about the dice (akṣa) turning against the virtuous King (puṇyaśloka) Nala, and that Nala had lost all his possessions, she again spoke to the nurse.
बृहत्सेने पुनर्गच्छ वार्ष्णेयं नलशासनात् ।
सूतमानय कल्याणि महत्कार्यमुपस्थितम् ॥९॥
9. bṛhatsene punargaccha vārṣṇeyaṁ nalaśāsanāt ,
sūtamānaya kalyāṇi mahatkāryamupasthitam.
9. bṛhatsene punar gaccha vārṣṇeyam nalaśāsanāt
sūtam ānaya kalyāṇi mahat kāryam upasthitam
9. O Bṛhatsenā, go back at Nala's command and bring Vārṣṇeya, the charioteer. O auspicious one, a great task is at hand.
बृहत्सेना तु तच्छ्रुत्वा दमयन्त्याः प्रभाषितम् ।
वार्ष्णेयमानयामास पुरुषैराप्तकारिभिः ॥१०॥
10. bṛhatsenā tu tacchrutvā damayantyāḥ prabhāṣitam ,
vārṣṇeyamānayāmāsa puruṣairāptakāribhiḥ.
10. bṛhatsenā tu tat śrutvā damayantyāḥ prabhāṣitam
vārṣṇeyam ānayāmāsa puruṣaiḥ āptakāribhiḥ
10. Bṛhatsenā, having indeed heard those words spoken by Damayantī, then caused Vārṣṇeya to be brought by trustworthy men.
वार्ष्णेयं तु ततो भैमी सान्त्वयञ्श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ।
उवाच देशकालज्ञा प्राप्तकालमनिन्दिता ॥११॥
11. vārṣṇeyaṁ tu tato bhaimī sāntvayañślakṣṇayā girā ,
uvāca deśakālajñā prāptakālamaninditā.
11. vārṣṇeyam tu tataḥ bhaimī sāntvayan ślakṣṇayā
girā uvāca deśakālajñā prāptakālam aninditā
11. Then Damayantī (Bhaimī), who was faultless and knew the proper time and place, spoke timely words, comforting Vārṣṇeya with gentle speech.
जानीषे त्वं यथा राजा सम्यग्वृत्तः सदा त्वयि ।
तस्य त्वं विषमस्थस्य साहाय्यं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१२॥
12. jānīṣe tvaṁ yathā rājā samyagvṛttaḥ sadā tvayi ,
tasya tvaṁ viṣamasthasya sāhāyyaṁ kartumarhasi.
12. jānīṣe tvam yathā rājā samyak vṛttaḥ sadā tvayi
tasya tvam viṣamasthasya sāhāyyam kartum arhasi
12. You know how the king has always treated you properly. Therefore, you ought to offer assistance to him, as he is now in a difficult situation.
यथा यथा हि नृपतिः पुष्करेणेह जीयते ।
तथा तथास्य द्यूते वै रागो भूयोऽभिवर्धते ॥१३॥
13. yathā yathā hi nṛpatiḥ puṣkareṇeha jīyate ,
tathā tathāsya dyūte vai rāgo bhūyo'bhivardhate.
13. yathā yathā hi nṛpatiḥ puṣkareṇa iha jīyate tathā
tathā asya dyūte vai rāgaḥ bhūyaḥ abhivardhate
13. The more the king is defeated here by Puskara, the more his passion for gambling (dyūta) increases.
यथा च पुष्करस्याक्षा वर्तन्ते वशवर्तिनः ।
तथा विपर्ययश्चापि नलस्याक्षेषु दृश्यते ॥१४॥
14. yathā ca puṣkarasyākṣā vartante vaśavartinaḥ ,
tathā viparyayaścāpi nalasyākṣeṣu dṛśyate.
14. yathā ca puṣkarasya akṣāḥ vartante vaśavartinaḥ
tathā viparyayaḥ ca api nalasya akṣeṣu dṛśyate
14. Just as Puskara's dice fall subserviently (in his favor), similarly, the opposite is seen with Nala's dice.
सुहृत्स्वजनवाक्यानि यथावन्न शृणोति च ।
नूनं मन्ये न शेषोऽस्ति नैषधस्य महात्मनः ॥१५॥
15. suhṛtsvajanavākyāni yathāvanna śṛṇoti ca ,
nūnaṁ manye na śeṣo'sti naiṣadhasya mahātmanaḥ.
15. suhṛtsvajanavākyāni yathāvat na śṛṇoti ca nūnam
manye na śeṣaḥ asti naiṣadhasya mahātmanaḥ
15. He does not listen properly to the advice of his friends and relatives. I surely think that nothing remains of the noble Nala (naiṣadha).
यत्र मे वचनं राजा नाभिनन्दति मोहितः ।
शरणं त्वां प्रपन्नास्मि सारथे कुरु मद्वचः ।
न हि मे शुध्यते भावः कदाचिद्विनशेदिति ॥१६॥
16. yatra me vacanaṁ rājā nābhinandati mohitaḥ ,
śaraṇaṁ tvāṁ prapannāsmi sārathe kuru madvacaḥ ,
na hi me śudhyate bhāvaḥ kadācidvinaśediti.
16. yatra me vacanam rājā na abhinandati
mohitaḥ śaraṇam tvām prapannā
asmi sārathe kuru mat vacaḥ na hi me
śudhyate bhāvaḥ kadācit vinaśet iti
16. Since the king, bewildered, does not accept my counsel, I have come to you for refuge, charioteer. Please heed my words. My heart is indeed not pure, as I fear that he may perish at any moment.
नलस्य दयितानश्वान्योजयित्वा महाजवान् ।
इदमारोप्य मिथुनं कुण्डिनं यातुमर्हसि ॥१७॥
17. nalasya dayitānaśvānyojayitvā mahājavān ,
idamāropya mithunaṁ kuṇḍinaṁ yātumarhasi.
17. nalasya dayitān aśvān yojayitvā mahājavān
idam āropya mithunam kuṇḍinam yātum arhasi
17. Having yoked Nala's beloved, very swift horses, and placed this pair (of children) upon them, you should go to Kundina.
मम ज्ञातिषु निक्षिप्य दारकौ स्यन्दनं तथा ।
अश्वांश्चैतान्यथाकामं वस वान्यत्र गच्छ वा ॥१८॥
18. mama jñātiṣu nikṣipya dārakau syandanaṁ tathā ,
aśvāṁścaitānyathākāmaṁ vasa vānyatra gaccha vā.
18. mama jñātiṣu nikṣipya dārakau syandanam tathā
aśvān ca etān yathākāmam vasa vā anyatra gaccha vā
18. After entrusting these two children, the chariot, and these horses to my relatives, you may stay (here) as you wish, or go elsewhere.
दमयन्त्यास्तु तद्वाक्यं वार्ष्णेयो नलसारथिः ।
न्यवेदयदशेषेण नलामात्येषु मुख्यशः ॥१९॥
19. damayantyāstu tadvākyaṁ vārṣṇeyo nalasārathiḥ ,
nyavedayadaśeṣeṇa nalāmātyeṣu mukhyaśaḥ.
19. damayantyāḥ tu tat vākyam vārṣṇeyaḥ nalasārathiḥ
nyavedayat aśeṣeṇa nalāmātyeṣu mukhyaśaḥ
19. Vārṣṇeya, Nala's charioteer, then reported Damayantī's entire statement, principally to Nala's ministers.
तैः समेत्य विनिश्चित्य सोऽनुज्ञातो महीपते ।
ययौ मिथुनमारोप्य विदर्भांस्तेन वाहिना ॥२०॥
20. taiḥ sametya viniścitya so'nujñāto mahīpate ,
yayau mithunamāropya vidarbhāṁstena vāhinā.
20. taiḥ sametya viniścitya saḥ anujñātaḥ mahīpate
yayau mithunam āropya vidarbhān tena vāhinā
20. Having met and consulted with them (the ministers), and having been granted leave by them, O king, he proceeded to Vidarbha, conveying the two children in that chariot.
हयांस्तत्र विनिक्षिप्य सूतो रथवरं च तम् ।
इन्द्रसेनां च तां कन्यामिन्द्रसेनं च बालकम् ॥२१॥
21. hayāṁstatra vinikṣipya sūto rathavaraṁ ca tam ,
indrasenāṁ ca tāṁ kanyāmindrasenaṁ ca bālakam.
21. hayān tatra vinikṣipya sūtaḥ rathavaram ca tam
| indrasenām ca tām kanyām indrasenam ca bālakam
21. Having left the horses there, along with that excellent chariot, and that girl Indrasenā, and the boy Indrasena, the charioteer...
आमन्त्र्य भीमं राजानमार्तः शोचन्नलं नृपम् ।
अटमानस्ततोऽयोध्यां जगाम नगरीं तदा ॥२२॥
22. āmantrya bhīmaṁ rājānamārtaḥ śocannalaṁ nṛpam ,
aṭamānastato'yodhyāṁ jagāma nagarīṁ tadā.
22. āmantrya bhīmam rājānam ārtaḥ śocan alam nṛpam
| aṭamānaḥ tataḥ ayodhyām jagāma nagarīm tadā
22. Having bid farewell to King Bhīma, he (Nala), distressed and lamenting deeply for the king, then, wandering, went to the city of Ayodhyā.
ऋतुपर्णं स राजानमुपतस्थे सुदुःखितः ।
भृतिं चोपययौ तस्य सारथ्येन महीपते ॥२३॥
23. ṛtuparṇaṁ sa rājānamupatasthe suduḥkhitaḥ ,
bhṛtiṁ copayayau tasya sārathyena mahīpate.
23. ṛtuparṇam sa rājānam upatasthe suduḥkhitaḥ |
bhṛtim ca upayayau tasya sāratthyena mahīpate
23. He, very sorrowful, approached King Ṛtuparṇa. And he obtained employment from that king as a charioteer.
