भयं मे सुमहज्जातं विस्मयश्चैव संजय ।
श्रुत्वा पाण्डुकुमाराणां कर्म देवैः सुदुष्करम् ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
bhayaṁ me sumahajjātaṁ vismayaścaiva saṁjaya ,
śrutvā pāṇḍukumārāṇāṁ karma devaiḥ suduṣkaram.

pāṇḍukumārāṇām devaiḥ api suduskaram karma śrutvā,
me sumahat bhayam ca vismayaḥ ca eva jātam.
1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Hearing of the Pāṇḍu princes' deed, which is extremely difficult even for the gods, a great fear and also astonishment have arisen within me, Sañjaya."
पुत्राणां च पराभवं श्रुत्वा संजय सर्वशः ।
चिन्ता मे महती सूत भविष्यति कथं त्विति ॥२॥
2. putrāṇāṁ ca parābhavaṁ śrutvā saṁjaya sarvaśaḥ ,
cintā me mahatī sūta bhaviṣyati kathaṁ tviti.
2. putrāṇām ca parābhavam śrutvā sañjaya sarvaśaḥ
cintā me mahatī sūta bhaviṣyati katham tu iti
2. sañjaya,
sūta,
putrāṇām ca sarvaśaḥ parābhavam śrutvā,
me mahatī cintā (asti) katham tu bhaviṣyati iti (bhāvayati).
2. And, Sañjaya, hearing in every respect about the defeat of my sons, a great anxiety arises within me, O Sūta: 'How will things turn out?'
ध्रुवं विदुरवाक्यानि धक्ष्यन्ति हृदयं मम ।
यथा हि दृश्यते सर्वं दैवयोगेन संजय ॥३॥
3. dhruvaṁ viduravākyāni dhakṣyanti hṛdayaṁ mama ,
yathā hi dṛśyate sarvaṁ daivayogena saṁjaya.
3. dhruvam viduravākyāni dhakṣyanti hṛdayam mama
yathā hi dṛśyate sarvam daivayogena sañjaya
3. sañjaya,
dhruvam viduravākyāni mama hṛdayam dhakṣyanti.
hi yathā sarvam (idam) daivayogena dṛśyate.
3. Surely, Vidura's words will burn my heart, Sañjaya, for indeed, everything is seen to happen by the force of destiny (daivayoga).
यत्र भीष्ममुखाञ्शूरानस्त्रज्ञान्योधसत्तमान् ।
पाण्डवानामनीकानि योधयन्ति प्रहारिणः ॥४॥
4. yatra bhīṣmamukhāñśūrānastrajñānyodhasattamān ,
pāṇḍavānāmanīkāni yodhayanti prahāriṇaḥ.

pāṇḍavānām anīkāni yodhayanti prahāriṇaḥ

4. Where the attackers are fighting the armies of the Pāṇḍavas, which include heroes with Bhīṣma as their chief, who are skilled in weaponry and are the foremost among warriors.
केनावध्या महात्मानः पाण्डुपुत्रा महाबलाः ।
केन दत्तवरास्तात किं वा ज्ञानं विदन्ति ते ।
येन क्षयं न गच्छन्ति दिवि तारागणा इव ॥५॥
5. kenāvadhyā mahātmānaḥ pāṇḍuputrā mahābalāḥ ,
kena dattavarāstāta kiṁ vā jñānaṁ vidanti te ,
yena kṣayaṁ na gacchanti divi tārāgaṇā iva.
5. kena avadhyāḥ mahātmānaḥ pāṇḍuputrāḥ
mahābalāḥ kena dattavarāḥ tāta
kim vā jñānam vidanti te yena kṣayam
na gacchanti divi tārāgaṇāḥ iva
5. tāta kena mahātmānaḥ mahābalāḥ pāṇḍuputrāḥ avadhyāḥ? kena dattavarāḥ vā te kim jñānam vidanti? yena divi tārāgaṇāḥ iva kṣayam na gacchanti.
5. By whom, dear Sañjaya, are these great-souled, mighty sons of Pāṇḍu made invulnerable? By whom were boons granted to them, or what knowledge (jñāna) do they possess, by which they do not perish like the multitudes of stars in the sky?
पुनः पुनर्न मृष्यामि हतं सैन्यं स्म पाण्डवैः ।
मय्येव दण्डः पतति दैवात्परमदारुणः ॥६॥
6. punaḥ punarna mṛṣyāmi hataṁ sainyaṁ sma pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
mayyeva daṇḍaḥ patati daivātparamadāruṇaḥ.
6. punaḥ punaḥ na mṛṣyāmi hatam sainyam sma pāṇḍavaiḥ
mayi eva daṇḍaḥ patati daivāt paramadāruṇaḥ
6. punaḥ punaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ hatam sainyam sma na mṛṣyāmi daivāt paramadāruṇaḥ daṇḍaḥ mayi eva patati.
6. I repeatedly cannot bear that the army has been killed by the Pāṇḍavas. An extremely terrible punishment (daṇḍa) falls upon me alone, by the will of destiny.
यथावध्याः पाण्डुसुता यथा वध्याश्च मे सुताः ।
एतन्मे सर्वमाचक्ष्व यथातत्त्वेन संजय ॥७॥
7. yathāvadhyāḥ pāṇḍusutā yathā vadhyāśca me sutāḥ ,
etanme sarvamācakṣva yathātattvena saṁjaya.
7. yathā avadhyāḥ pāṇḍusutāḥ yathā vadhyāḥ ca me
sutāḥ etat me sarvam ācakṣva yathātattvena sañjaya
7. sañjaya etat sarvam me yathātattvena ācakṣva - yathā pāṇḍusutāḥ avadhyāḥ ca yathā me sutāḥ vadhyāḥ.
7. O Sañjaya, explain all this to me truthfully: how the sons of Pāṇḍu are invulnerable, and how my own sons are vulnerable.
न हि पारं प्रपश्यामि दुःखस्यास्य कथंचन ।
समुद्रस्येव महतो भुजाभ्यां प्रतरन्नरः ॥८॥
8. na hi pāraṁ prapaśyāmi duḥkhasyāsya kathaṁcana ,
samudrasyeva mahato bhujābhyāṁ pratarannaraḥ.
8. na hi pāram prapaśyāmi duḥkhasya asya kathaṃcana
samudrasya iva mahataḥ bhujābhyām prataran naraḥ
8. naraḥ bhujābhyām mahataḥ samudrasya iva prataran,
asya duḥkhasya pāram na hi kathaṃcana prapaśyāmi
8. I truly see no end to this suffering (duḥkha) in any way, just as a man cannot cross a great ocean with his two arms.
पुत्राणां व्यसनं मन्ये ध्रुवं प्राप्तं सुदारुणम् ।
घातयिष्यति मे पुत्रान्सर्वान्भीमो न संशयः ॥९॥
9. putrāṇāṁ vyasanaṁ manye dhruvaṁ prāptaṁ sudāruṇam ,
ghātayiṣyati me putrānsarvānbhīmo na saṁśayaḥ.
9. putrāṇām vyasanam manye dhruvam prāptam sudāruṇam
ghātayiṣyati me putrān sarvān bhīmaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
9. me putrāṇām dhruvam sudāruṇam vyasanam prāptam manye.
bhīmaḥ me sarvān putrān ghātayiṣyati,
na saṃśayaḥ.
9. I believe that a truly terrible calamity has surely reached my sons. There is no doubt: Bhima will kill all my sons.
न हि पश्यामि तं वीरं यो मे रक्षेत्सुतान्रणे ।
ध्रुवं विनाशः समरे पुत्राणां मम संजय ॥१०॥
10. na hi paśyāmi taṁ vīraṁ yo me rakṣetsutānraṇe ,
dhruvaṁ vināśaḥ samare putrāṇāṁ mama saṁjaya.
10. na hi paśyāmi tam vīram yaḥ me rakṣet sutān raṇe
dhruvam vināśaḥ samare putrāṇām mama saṃjaya
10. saṃjaya,
hi me tam vīram na paśyāmi yaḥ raṇe me sutān rakṣet.
mama putrāṇām samare vināśaḥ dhruvam.
10. Sanjaya, I truly do not see that hero who would protect my sons in battle. The destruction of my sons in battle is certain.
तस्मान्मे कारणं सूत युक्तिं चैव विशेषतः ।
पृच्छतोऽद्य यथातत्त्वं सर्वमाख्यातुमर्हसि ॥११॥
11. tasmānme kāraṇaṁ sūta yuktiṁ caiva viśeṣataḥ ,
pṛcchato'dya yathātattvaṁ sarvamākhyātumarhasi.
11. tasmāt me kāraṇam sūta yuktim ca eva viśeṣataḥ
pṛcchataḥ adya yathātattvam sarvam ākhyātum arhasi
11. sūta,
tasmāt adya pṛcchataḥ me kāraṇam ca viśeṣataḥ yuktim ca eva sarvam yathātattvam ākhyātum arhasi.
11. Therefore, O Charioteer, you ought to explain to me, who am asking today, all the reasons and especially the proper course of action, just as it truly is.
दुर्योधनोऽपि यच्चक्रे दृष्ट्वा स्वान्विमुखान्रणे ।
भीष्मद्रोणौ कृपश्चैव सौबलेयो जयद्रथः ।
द्रौणिर्वापि महेष्वासो विकर्णो वा महाबलः ॥१२॥
12. duryodhano'pi yaccakre dṛṣṭvā svānvimukhānraṇe ,
bhīṣmadroṇau kṛpaścaiva saubaleyo jayadrathaḥ ,
drauṇirvāpi maheṣvāso vikarṇo vā mahābalaḥ.
12. duryodhanaḥ api yat cakre dṛṣṭvā svān
vimukhān raṇe bhīṣmadroṇau kṛpaḥ ca
eva saubaleyaḥ jayadrathaḥ drauṇiḥ vā
api maheṣvāsaḥ vikarṇaḥ vā mahābalaḥ
12. duryodhanaḥ api raṇe svān vimukhān
bhīṣmadroṇau kṛpaḥ ca eva saubaleyaḥ
jayadrathaḥ drauṇiḥ vā api maheṣvāsaḥ
vikarṇaḥ vā mahābalaḥ dṛṣṭvā yat cakre
12. What did Duryodhana do when he saw his own warriors—Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Saubaleya (Shakuni), Jayadratha, Droni the great archer, or the mighty Vikarna—disheartened in battle?
निश्चयो वापि कस्तेषां तदा ह्यासीन्महात्मनाम् ।
विमुखेषु महाप्राज्ञ मम पुत्रेषु संजय ॥१३॥
13. niścayo vāpi kasteṣāṁ tadā hyāsīnmahātmanām ,
vimukheṣu mahāprājña mama putreṣu saṁjaya.
13. niścayaḥ vā api kaḥ teṣām tadā hi āsīt mahā-ātmanām
vimukheṣu mahā-prājña mama putreṣu sañjaya
13. sañjaya mahā-prājña mama putreṣu vimukheṣu tadā
teṣām mahā-ātmanām niścayaḥ vā api kaḥ hi āsīt
13. O Sanjaya, O greatly wise one, what then was the resolve of those great souls when my sons had turned away from the battle disheartened?
संजय उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्नवहितः श्रुत्वा चैवावधारय ।
नैव मन्त्रकृतं किंचिन्नैव मायां तथाविधाम् ।
न वै विभीषिकां कांचिद्राजन्कुर्वन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥१४॥
14. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājannavahitaḥ śrutvā caivāvadhāraya ,
naiva mantrakṛtaṁ kiṁcinnaiva māyāṁ tathāvidhām ,
na vai vibhīṣikāṁ kāṁcidrājankurvanti pāṇḍavāḥ.
14. sañjaya uvāca śṛṇu rājan avahitaḥ śrutvā
ca eva avadhāraya na eva mantra-kṛtam
kiñcit na eva māyām tathā-vidhām na vai
vibhīṣikām kāñcit rājan kurvanti pāṇḍavāḥ
14. sañjaya uvāca rājan avahitaḥ śṛṇu ca śrutvā
eva avadhāraya rājan pāṇḍavāḥ na eva
kiñcit mantra-kṛtam na eva tathā-vidhām
māyām na vai kāñcit vibhīṣikām kurvanti
14. Sanjaya said: "O King, listen attentively, and having heard, comprehend. The Pandavas do not perform any spell (mantra) or any kind of illusion (māyā), nor indeed do they resort to any intimidation, O King."
युध्यन्ति ते यथान्यायं शक्तिमन्तश्च संयुगे ।
धर्मेण सर्वकार्याणि कीर्तितानीति भारत ।
आरभन्ते सदा पार्थाः प्रार्थयाना महद्यशः ॥१५॥
15. yudhyanti te yathānyāyaṁ śaktimantaśca saṁyuge ,
dharmeṇa sarvakāryāṇi kīrtitānīti bhārata ,
ārabhante sadā pārthāḥ prārthayānā mahadyaśaḥ.
15. yudhyanti te yathā-nyāyam śaktimantaḥ
ca saṃyuge dharmeṇa sarva-kāryāṇi
kīrtitāni iti bhārata ārabhante
sadā pārthāḥ prārthayānā mahat yaśaḥ
15. te saṃyuge yathā-nyāyam ca śaktimantaḥ yudhyanti.
bhārata dharmeṇa sarva-kāryāṇi kīrtitāni iti.
pārthāḥ sadā mahat yaśaḥ prārthayānāḥ ārabhante
15. They (the Pandavas) fight justly and are mighty in battle. All their deeds are declared to be (performed) according to natural law (dharma), O Bharata. The sons of Pritha, desiring great fame, always undertake (their actions).
न ते युद्धान्निवर्तन्ते धर्मोपेता महाबलाः ।
श्रिया परमया युक्ता यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ।
तेनावध्या रणे पार्था जययुक्ताश्च पार्थिव ॥१६॥
16. na te yuddhānnivartante dharmopetā mahābalāḥ ,
śriyā paramayā yuktā yato dharmastato jayaḥ ,
tenāvadhyā raṇe pārthā jayayuktāśca pārthiva.
16. na te yuddhāt nivartante dharmopetāḥ
mahābalāḥ śriyā paramayā yuktāḥ yataḥ
dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ tena avadhyāḥ
raṇe pārthāḥ jayayuktāḥ ca pārthiva
16. pārthiva,
dharmopetāḥ mahābalāḥ paramayā śriyā yuktāḥ te yuddhāt na nivartante.
yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ.
tena pārthāḥ raṇe avadhyāḥ jayayuktāḥ ca.
16. O King, those mighty ones, endowed with righteousness (dharma), do not retreat from battle. They are endowed with supreme glory, for where there is righteousness (dharma), there is victory. Therefore, the sons of Pṛthā (Pārthas) are invincible in battle and are always victorious.
तव पुत्रा दुरात्मानः पापेष्वभिरताः सदा ।
निष्ठुरा हीनकर्माणस्तेन हीयन्ति संयुगे ॥१७॥
17. tava putrā durātmānaḥ pāpeṣvabhiratāḥ sadā ,
niṣṭhurā hīnakarmāṇastena hīyanti saṁyuge.
17. tava putrāḥ durātmanāḥ pāpeṣu abhiratāḥ sadā
niṣṭhurāḥ hīnakarmāṇaḥ tena hīyanti saṃyuge
17. tava putrāḥ durātmanāḥ sadā pāpeṣu abhiratāḥ niṣṭhurāḥ hīnakarmāṇaḥ (santi).
tena saṃyuge hīyanti.
17. Your sons, O King, are evil-minded (durātman), always engaged in sinful acts, cruel, and performing ignoble deeds. Therefore, they are defeated in battle.
सुबहूनि नृशंसानि पुत्रैस्तव जनेश्वर ।
निकृतानीह पाण्डूनां नीचैरिव यथा नरैः ॥१८॥
18. subahūni nṛśaṁsāni putraistava janeśvara ,
nikṛtānīha pāṇḍūnāṁ nīcairiva yathā naraiḥ.
18. subahūni nṛśaṃsāni putraiḥ tava janesvara
nikṛtāni iha pāṇḍūnām nīcaiḥ iva yathā naraiḥ
18. janesvara,
tava putraiḥ pāṇḍūnām iha nīcaiḥ naraiḥ iva yathā subahūni nṛśaṃsāni nikṛtāni (santi).
18. O Lord of Men (Jana-īśvara), your sons have committed many cruel acts here against the Pāṇḍavas, just as ignoble men would.
सर्वं च तदनादृत्य पुत्राणां तव किल्बिषम् ।
सापह्नवाः सदैवासन्पाण्डवाः पाण्डुपूर्वज ।
न चैनान्बहु मन्यन्ते पुत्रास्तव विशां पते ॥१९॥
19. sarvaṁ ca tadanādṛtya putrāṇāṁ tava kilbiṣam ,
sāpahnavāḥ sadaivāsanpāṇḍavāḥ pāṇḍupūrvaja ,
na cainānbahu manyante putrāstava viśāṁ pate.
19. sarvam ca tat anādṛtya putrāṇām tava
kilbiṣam sāpahnavāḥ sadā āsan
pāṇḍavāḥ pāṇḍupūrvaja na ca enān bahu
manyante putrāḥ tava viśām pate
19. pāṇḍupūrvaja,
viśām pate,
ca tat sarvam tava putrāṇām kilbiṣam anādṛtya,
pāṇḍavāḥ sadā sāpahnavāḥ āsan.
ca tava putrāḥ enān bahu na manyante.
19. And, O ancestor of Pāṇḍu, even disregarding all those offenses of your sons, the Pāṇḍavas were always forgiving. Yet, your sons, O Lord of the People, do not hold them in high regard.
तस्य पापस्य सततं क्रियमाणस्य कर्मणः ।
संप्राप्तं सुमहद्घोरं फलं किंपाकसंनिभम् ।
स तद्भुङ्क्ष्व महाराज सपुत्रः ससुहृज्जनः ॥२०॥
20. tasya pāpasya satataṁ kriyamāṇasya karmaṇaḥ ,
saṁprāptaṁ sumahadghoraṁ phalaṁ kiṁpākasaṁnibham ,
sa tadbhuṅkṣva mahārāja saputraḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ.
20. tasya pāpasya satatam kriyamāṇasya
karmaṇaḥ samprāptam sumahat ghoram
phalam kiṃpākasaṃnibham sa tat bhuṅkṣva
mahārāja saputraḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ
20. mahārāja satatam kriyamāṇasya tasya
pāpasya karmaṇaḥ sumahat ghoram
kiṃpākasaṃnibham phalam samprāptam saḥ
saputraḥ sasuhṛjjanaḥ tat bhuṅkṣva
20. The exceedingly great and dreadful fruit, resembling a kimpāka, of that continually committed sinful action (karma) has now been obtained. Therefore, O great king, you must consume it, along with your sons and friends.
नावबुध्यसि यद्राजन्वार्यमाणः सुहृज्जनैः ।
विदुरेणाथ भीष्मेण द्रोणेन च महात्मना ॥२१॥
21. nāvabudhyasi yadrājanvāryamāṇaḥ suhṛjjanaiḥ ,
vidureṇātha bhīṣmeṇa droṇena ca mahātmanā.
21. na avabudhyasi yat rājan vāryamāṇaḥ suhṛjjanaiḥ
vidureṇa atha bhīṣmeṇa droṇena ca mahātmanā
21. rājan yat suhṛjjanaiḥ vidureṇa atha bhīṣmeṇa ca
mahātmanā droṇena vāryamāṇaḥ (san) na avabudhyasi
21. Why do you not comprehend, O King, even though you are being repeatedly advised by friends, and by Vidura, Bhishma, and the great-souled Drona?
तथा मया चाप्यसकृद्वार्यमाणो न गृह्णसि ।
वाक्यं हितं च पथ्यं च मर्त्यः पथ्यमिवौषधम् ।
पुत्राणां मतमास्थाय जितान्मन्यसि पाण्डवान् ॥२२॥
22. tathā mayā cāpyasakṛdvāryamāṇo na gṛhṇasi ,
vākyaṁ hitaṁ ca pathyaṁ ca martyaḥ pathyamivauṣadham ,
putrāṇāṁ matamāsthāya jitānmanyasi pāṇḍavān.
22. tathā mayā ca api asakṛt vāryamāṇaḥ na
gṛhṇasi vākyam hitam ca pathyam ca
martyaḥ pathyam iva auṣadham putrāṇām
matam āsthāya jitān manyasi pāṇḍavān
22. tathā mayā ca asakṛt vāryamāṇaḥ api
(tvam) hitam ca pathyam ca vākyam martyaḥ
pathyam auṣadham iva na gṛhṇasi putrāṇām
matam āsthāya pāṇḍavān jitān manyasi
22. In the same way, though repeatedly advised by me, you do not accept these words, which are both beneficial and wholesome, just as a sick person might reject beneficial medicine. By adopting the view of your sons, you consider the Pāṇḍavas to be conquered.
शृणु भूयो यथातत्त्वं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ।
कारणं भरतश्रेष्ठ पाण्डवानां जयं प्रति ।
तत्तेऽहं कथयिष्यामि यथाश्रुतमरिंदम ॥२३॥
23. śṛṇu bhūyo yathātattvaṁ yanmāṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi ,
kāraṇaṁ bharataśreṣṭha pāṇḍavānāṁ jayaṁ prati ,
tatte'haṁ kathayiṣyāmi yathāśrutamariṁdama.
23. śṛṇu bhūyaḥ yathātattvam yat mām tvam
paripṛcchasi kāraṇam bharataśreṣṭha
pāṇḍavānām jayam prati tat te
aham kathayiṣyāmi yathāśrutam ariṃdama
23. bharataśreṣṭha ariṃdama tvam yat
pāṇḍavānām jayam prati kāraṇam yathātattvam
mām paripṛcchasi tat aham te
yathāśrutam bhūyaḥ kathayiṣyāmi śṛṇu
23. Listen again, O best of Bharatas, O subduer of foes, to the precise truth of what you are asking me regarding the reason for the Pāṇḍavas' victory. I will narrate that to you exactly as I have heard it.
दुर्योधनेन संपृष्ट एतमर्थं पितामहः ।
दृष्ट्वा भ्रातॄन्रणे सर्वान्निर्जितान्सुमहारथान् ॥२४॥
24. duryodhanena saṁpṛṣṭa etamarthaṁ pitāmahaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā bhrātṝnraṇe sarvānnirjitānsumahārathān.
24. duryodhanena saṃpṛṣṭaḥ etam artham pitāmahaḥ
dṛṣṭvā bhrātṝn raṇe sarvān nirjitān sumahārathān
24. pitāmahaḥ duryodhanena etam artham saṃpṛṣṭaḥ
sarvān sumahārathān bhrātṝn raṇe nirjitān dṛṣṭvā
24. The grandfather (Bhishma), having been questioned by Duryodhana regarding this matter, and having observed all his great charioteer kinsmen defeated in battle...
शोकसंमूढहृदयो निशाकाले स्म कौरवः ।
पितामहं महाप्राज्ञं विनयेनोपगम्य ह ।
यदब्रवीत्सुतस्तेऽसौ तन्मे शृणु जनेश्वर ॥२५॥
25. śokasaṁmūḍhahṛdayo niśākāle sma kauravaḥ ,
pitāmahaṁ mahāprājñaṁ vinayenopagamya ha ,
yadabravītsutaste'sau tanme śṛṇu janeśvara.
25. śokasaṃmūḍhahṛdayaḥ niśākāle sma
kauravaḥ pitāmaham mahāprājñam
vinayena upagamya ha yat abravīt
sutaḥ te asau tat me śṛṇu janeśvara

25. In the nighttime, that Kuru (Duryodhana), with a heart overwhelmed by sorrow, humbly approached the highly wise grandfather (Bhishma). O lord of men, listen to what your son then said to him.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
त्वं च द्रोणश्च शल्यश्च कृपो द्रौणिस्तथैव च ।
कृतवर्मा च हार्दिक्यः काम्बोजश्च सुदक्षिणः ॥२६॥
26. duryodhana uvāca ,
tvaṁ ca droṇaśca śalyaśca kṛpo drauṇistathaiva ca ,
kṛtavarmā ca hārdikyaḥ kāmbojaśca sudakṣiṇaḥ.

26. Duryodhana said: 'You (Bhishma), Drona, Shalya, Kripa, and likewise Drona's son (Ashvatthama), along with Kritavarma, the Hardikya, and Sudakshina, the king of Kamboja—'
भूरिश्रवा विकर्णश्च भगदत्तश्च वीर्यवान् ।
महारथाः समाख्याताः कुलपुत्रास्तनुत्यजः ॥२७॥
27. bhūriśravā vikarṇaśca bhagadattaśca vīryavān ,
mahārathāḥ samākhyātāḥ kulaputrāstanutyajaḥ.

27. Bhurishravas, Vikarna, and the valiant Bhagadatta—these noble princes, renowned as great charioteers (mahāratha), are prepared to sacrifice their bodies (tanutyaja).
त्रयाणामपि लोकानां पर्याप्ता इति मे मतिः ।
पाण्डवानां समस्ताश्च न तिष्ठन्ति पराक्रमे ॥२८॥
28. trayāṇāmapi lokānāṁ paryāptā iti me matiḥ ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ samastāśca na tiṣṭhanti parākrame.
28. trayāṇām api lokānām paryāptāḥ iti me matiḥ |
pāṇḍavānām samastāḥ ca na tiṣṭhanti parākrame
28. me matiḥ iti (asti yat) (pāṇḍavāḥ)

pāṇḍavānām parākrame na tiṣṭhanti
28. It is my conviction that they (the Pāṇḍavas) are capable of conquering even the three worlds. And all (our combined forces) cannot stand against the prowess of the Pāṇḍavas.
तत्र मे संशयो जातस्तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः ।
यं समाश्रित्य कौन्तेया जयन्त्यस्मान्पदे पदे ॥२९॥
29. tatra me saṁśayo jātastanmamācakṣva pṛcchataḥ ,
yaṁ samāśritya kaunteyā jayantyasmānpade pade.

29. A doubt has arisen in me regarding this. Therefore, please explain to me, who am asking, upon whom the Kaunteyas rely to defeat us at every step.
भीष्म उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्वचो मह्यं यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि कौरव ।
बहुशश्च ममोक्तोऽसि न च मे तत्त्वया कृतम् ॥३०॥
30. bhīṣma uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājanvaco mahyaṁ yattvāṁ vakṣyāmi kaurava ,
bahuśaśca mamokto'si na ca me tattvayā kṛtam.

30. Bhishma said: O King, O Kaurava, listen to my words which I shall speak to you. I have told you this many times, yet you have not acted upon it.
क्रियतां पाण्डवैः सार्धं शमो भरतसत्तम ।
एतत्क्षममहं मन्ये पृथिव्यास्तव चाभिभो ॥३१॥
31. kriyatāṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ śamo bharatasattama ,
etatkṣamamahaṁ manye pṛthivyāstava cābhibho.
31. kriyatām pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham śamaḥ bharatasattama |
etat kṣamam aham manye pṛthivyāḥ tava ca abhibho
31. bharatasattama abhibho (tvayā) pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham śamaḥ
kriyatām aham etat pṛthivyāḥ ca tava kṣamam manye
31. O best among the Bharatas, O Lord, let peace be made with the Pāṇḍavas. I consider this to be beneficial for both the earth and for you.
भुञ्जेमां पृथिवीं राजन्भ्रातृभिः सहितः सुखी ।
दुर्हृदस्तापयन्सर्वान्नन्दयंश्चापि बान्धवान् ॥३२॥
32. bhuñjemāṁ pṛthivīṁ rājanbhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sukhī ,
durhṛdastāpayansarvānnandayaṁścāpi bāndhavān.
32. bhuñje imām pṛthivīm rājan bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sukhī
durhṛdaḥ tāpayan sarvān nandayān ca api bāndhavān
32. rājan bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sukhī sarvān durhṛdaḥ
tāpayan ca api bāndhavān nandayān imām pṛthivīm bhuñje
32. O King, accompanied by my brothers, I shall happily enjoy this earth, tormenting all enemies and also delighting my relatives.
न च मे क्रोशतस्तात श्रुतवानसि वै पुरा ।
तदिदं समनुप्राप्तं यत्पाण्डूनवमन्यसे ॥३३॥
33. na ca me krośatastāta śrutavānasi vai purā ,
tadidaṁ samanuprāptaṁ yatpāṇḍūnavamanyase.
33. na ca me krośataḥ tāta śrutavān asi vai purā
tat idam samanuprāptam yat pāṇḍūn avamanayase
33. tāta purā me krośataḥ vai na ca śrutavān asi.
yat pāṇḍūn avamanyase,
tat idam samanuprāptam.
33. O father, you certainly did not listen to me when I cried out before. This very situation has now arisen because you disrespect the Pāṇḍavas.
यश्च हेतुरवध्यत्वे तेषामक्लिष्टकर्मणाम् ।
तं शृणुष्व महाराज मम कीर्तयतः प्रभो ॥३४॥
34. yaśca heturavadhyatve teṣāmakliṣṭakarmaṇām ,
taṁ śṛṇuṣva mahārāja mama kīrtayataḥ prabho.
34. yaḥ ca hetuḥ avadhyatve teṣām akliṣṭakarmaṇām
tam śṛṇuṣva mahārāja mama kīrtayataḥ prabho
34. mahārāja prabho,
mama kīrtayataḥ,
teṣām akliṣṭakarmaṇām avadhyatve yaḥ ca hetuḥ,
tam śṛṇuṣva
34. O great king, O lord, listen to that reason for the invincibility of those Pāṇḍavas whose actions are unblemished, as I narrate it.
नास्ति लोकेषु तद्भूतं भविता नो भविष्यति ।
यो जयेत्पाण्डवान्संख्ये पालिताञ्शार्ङ्गधन्वना ॥३५॥
35. nāsti lokeṣu tadbhūtaṁ bhavitā no bhaviṣyati ,
yo jayetpāṇḍavānsaṁkhye pālitāñśārṅgadhanvanā.
35. na asti lokeṣu tat bhūtam bhavitā na u bhaviṣyati
yaḥ jayet pāṇḍavān saṃkhye pālitān śārṅgadhanvanā
35. lokeṣu tat bhūtam na asti,
na u bhavitā,
na bhaviṣyati,
yaḥ śārṅgadhanvanā pālitān pāṇḍavān saṃkhye jayet.
35. There is no such being in the worlds, nor has there been, nor will there be, who could defeat the Pāṇḍavas in battle when they are protected by the wielder of the Śārṅga bow.
यत्तु मे कथितं तात मुनिभिर्भावितात्मभिः ।
पुराणगीतं धर्मज्ञ तच्छृणुष्व यथातथम् ॥३६॥
36. yattu me kathitaṁ tāta munibhirbhāvitātmabhiḥ ,
purāṇagītaṁ dharmajña tacchṛṇuṣva yathātatham.
36. yat tu me kathitam tāta munibhiḥ bhāvitātmabhiḥ
purāṇagītam dharmajña tat śṛṇuṣva yathātatham
36. tāta dharmajña munibhiḥ bhāvitātmabhiḥ me yat purāṇagītam kathitam,
tat yathātatham śṛṇuṣva
36. O dear one, O knower of natural law (dharma), listen accurately to that which has been told to me by the sages with purified selves (bhāvitātman), and which is sung in the ancient texts (purāṇagīta).
पुरा किल सुराः सर्वे ऋषयश्च समागताः ।
पितामहमुपासेदुः पर्वते गन्धमादने ॥३७॥
37. purā kila surāḥ sarve ṛṣayaśca samāgatāḥ ,
pitāmahamupāseduḥ parvate gandhamādane.

37. Indeed, in ancient times, all the gods and sages, having gathered, approached Brahmā (pitāmaha) on the Gandhamādana mountain.
मध्ये तेषां समासीनः प्रजापतिरपश्यत ।
विमानं जाज्वलद्भासा स्थितं प्रवरमम्बरे ॥३८॥
38. madhye teṣāṁ samāsīnaḥ prajāpatirapaśyata ,
vimānaṁ jājvaladbhāsā sthitaṁ pravaramambare.

vimānam jājavaldbhāsā sthitam pravaram ambare

38. Sitting among them, Prajāpati (Brahmā) saw an excellent celestial vehicle (vimāna), shining brightly, situated in the sky.
ध्यानेनावेद्य तं ब्रह्मा कृत्वा च नियतोऽञ्जलिम् ।
नमश्चकार हृष्टात्मा परमं परमेश्वरम् ॥३९॥
39. dhyānenāvedya taṁ brahmā kṛtvā ca niyato'ñjalim ,
namaścakāra hṛṣṭātmā paramaṁ parameśvaram.
39. dhyānena āvedya tam brahmā kṛtvā ca niyataḥ
añjalim namaḥ cakāra hṛṣṭātmā paramam parameśvaram
39. brahmā hṛṣṭātmā dhyānena tam āvedya,

39. Having known it through meditation (dhyāna), Brahmā, with a joyful heart (hṛṣṭātman) and being composed (niyata), having also folded his hands (añjali), bowed to the Supreme Lord (Parameśvara), the highest.
ऋषयस्त्वथ देवाश्च दृष्ट्वा ब्रह्माणमुत्थितम् ।
स्थिताः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे पश्यन्तो महदद्भुतम् ॥४०॥
40. ṛṣayastvatha devāśca dṛṣṭvā brahmāṇamutthitam ,
sthitāḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve paśyanto mahadadbhutam.
40. ṛṣayaḥ tu atha devāḥ ca dṛṣṭvā brahmāṇam utthitam
sthitāḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve paśyantaḥ mahat adbhutam
40. atha ṛṣayaḥ ca devāḥ tu utthitam brahmāṇam dṛṣṭvā
sarve prāñjalayaḥ sthitāḥ mahat adbhutam paśyantaḥ
40. Thereupon, the sages and also the gods, having seen Brahmā manifested, all stood with folded hands, beholding a great wonder.
यथावच्च तमभ्यर्च्य ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मविदां वरः ।
जगाद जगतः स्रष्टा परं परमधर्मवित् ॥४१॥
41. yathāvacca tamabhyarcya brahmā brahmavidāṁ varaḥ ,
jagāda jagataḥ sraṣṭā paraṁ paramadharmavit.
41. yathāvat ca tam abhyarcya brahmā brahmavidām varaḥ
jagāda jagataḥ sraṣṭā param parama-dharma-vit
41. ca brahmā jagataḥ sraṣṭā brahmavidām varaḥ
parama-dharma-vit tam yathāvat abhyarcya param jagāda
41. And Brahmā (the creator of the universe), the best among those who know ultimate reality (brahman), and the knower of the supreme natural law (dharma), having duly worshipped Him (the Supreme Being), spoke the supreme word.
विश्वावसुर्विश्वमूर्तिर्विश्वेशो विष्वक्सेनो विश्वकर्मा वशी च ।
विश्वेश्वरो वासुदेवोऽसि तस्माद्योगात्मानं दैवतं त्वामुपैमि ॥४२॥
42. viśvāvasurviśvamūrtirviśveśo; viṣvakseno viśvakarmā vaśī ca ,
viśveśvaro vāsudevo'si tasmā;dyogātmānaṁ daivataṁ tvāmupaimi.

viṣvaksenaḥ viśvakarmā vaśī ca
viśveśvaraḥ vāsudevaḥ asi tasmāt
yoga-ātmānam daivatam tvām upaimi

viṣvaksenaḥ viśvakarmā ca vaśī
viśveśvaraḥ vāsudevaḥ asi tasmāt
yoga-ātmānam daivatam tvām upaimi
42. You are Viśvāvasu (controller of all wealth), Viśvamūrti (whose form is the universe), Viśveśa (the lord of the universe), Viṣvaksena (whose forces are everywhere), Viśvakarmā (the creator of all), and the supreme controller (vaśī). You are the Lord of all (Viśveśvara) and Vāsudeva. Therefore, I approach You, the divine being, whose essence is spiritual discipline (yoga).
जय विश्व महादेव जय लोकहिते रत ।
जय योगीश्वर विभो जय योगपरावर ॥४३॥
43. jaya viśva mahādeva jaya lokahite rata ,
jaya yogīśvara vibho jaya yogaparāvara.

43. Hail, O Universal (viśva) Great God (mahādeva)! Hail, O You who are engaged in the welfare of the world! Hail, O Lord of spiritual discipline (yoga) (yogīśvara), O Almighty (vibhu)! Hail, O You who embody the ultimate and immediate aspects of spiritual discipline (yoga)!
पद्मगर्भ विशालाक्ष जय लोकेश्वरेश्वर ।
भूतभव्यभवन्नाथ जय सौम्यात्मजात्मज ॥४४॥
44. padmagarbha viśālākṣa jaya lokeśvareśvara ,
bhūtabhavyabhavannātha jaya saumyātmajātmaja.

44. Hail, O lotus-wombed (padmagarbha) and wide-eyed one! O Lord of the lords of the worlds, hail! O Lord of all beings—past, future, and present—hail! O son of the son of Saumya, hail!
असंख्येयगुणाजेय जय सर्वपरायण ।
नारायण सुदुष्पार जय शार्ङ्गधनुर्धर ॥४५॥
45. asaṁkhyeyaguṇājeya jaya sarvaparāyaṇa ,
nārāyaṇa suduṣpāra jaya śārṅgadhanurdhara.

45. Hail, O invincible one (ajeya) with countless qualities (guṇa)! O ultimate resort of all (sarvaparāyaṇa), hail! O Narayana, who is very difficult to cross (suduṣpāra), hail! O bearer of the Śārṅga bow (śārṅgadhanurdhara), hail!
सर्वगुह्यगुणोपेत विश्वमूर्ते निरामय ।
विश्वेश्वर महाबाहो जय लोकार्थतत्पर ॥४६॥
46. sarvaguhyaguṇopeta viśvamūrte nirāmaya ,
viśveśvara mahābāho jaya lokārthatatpara.

46. O one endowed with all secret qualities (guṇa), O universal form (viśvamūrti), O faultless one! O Lord of the universe (viśveśvara), O mighty-armed (mahābāhu) one! Hail, O one devoted to the welfare of the worlds (lokārthatatpara)!
महोरग वराहाद्य हरिकेश विभो जय ।
हरिवास विशामीश विश्वावासामिताव्यय ॥४७॥
47. mahoraga varāhādya harikeśa vibho jaya ,
harivāsa viśāmīśa viśvāvāsāmitāvyaya.

47. O great serpent (mahoraga), O one who begins with Varaha (varāhādhya) and others, O golden-haired (harikeśa) one, O all-pervading Lord (vibhu)! Hail! O dwelling place of Hari (harivāsa), O Lord of the people (viśāmīśa)! O abode of the universe (viśvāvāsa), O immeasurable (amita) one, O imperishable (avyaya) one!
व्यक्ताव्यक्तामितस्थान नियतेन्द्रिय सेन्द्रिय ।
असंख्येयात्मभावज्ञ जय गम्भीर कामद ॥४८॥
48. vyaktāvyaktāmitasthāna niyatendriya sendriya ,
asaṁkhyeyātmabhāvajña jaya gambhīra kāmada.

48. Hail to you, whose abode is manifest, unmanifest, and limitless; whose senses are disciplined, yet who is endowed with all senses; who knows the innumerable forms of the self (ātman); O Profound One, giver of desires!
अनन्त विदितप्रज्ञ नित्यं भूतविभावन ।
कृतकार्य कृतप्रज्ञ धर्मज्ञ विजयाजय ॥४९॥
49. ananta viditaprajña nityaṁ bhūtavibhāvana ,
kṛtakārya kṛtaprajña dharmajña vijayājaya.

गुह्यात्मन्सर्वभूतात्मन्स्फुटसंभूतसंभव ।
भूतार्थतत्त्व लोकेश जय भूतविभावन ॥५०॥
50. guhyātmansarvabhūtātmansphuṭasaṁbhūtasaṁbhava ,
bhūtārthatattva lokeśa jaya bhūtavibhāvana.
50. guhyātman sarvabhūtātman sphuṭasaṁbhūtasaṁbhava
bhūtārthatattva lokeśa jaya bhūtavibhāvana

50. O Hidden Self (ātman), O Self (ātman) of all beings, O clearly manifest origin of all existence! O Essence of the reality of beings, Lord of the worlds, hail to you, O Manifestor of beings!
आत्मयोने महाभाग कल्पसंक्षेपतत्पर ।
उद्भावन मनोद्भाव जय ब्रह्मजनप्रिय ॥५१॥

udbhāvana manodbhāva jaya brahmajanapriya.

निसर्गसर्गाभिरत कामेश परमेश्वर ।
अमृतोद्भव सद्भाव युगाग्ने विजयप्रद ॥५२॥

आत्मभूत महाभूत कर्मात्मञ्जय कर्मद ॥५३॥

53. O Lord of the lords of creation, O divine one, O lotus-navelled (padmanābha) one, O mighty one! O self-existent (ātmabhūta) one, O great being (mahābhūta), O conqueror whose very intrinsic nature (ātman) is action (karma), O bestower of actions (karma)!
पादौ तव धरा देवी दिशो बाहुर्दिवं शिरः ।
मूर्तिस्तेऽहं सुराः कायश्चन्द्रादित्यौ च चक्षुषी ॥५४॥
54. pādau tava dharā devī diśo bāhurdivaṁ śiraḥ ,
mūrtiste'haṁ surāḥ kāyaścandrādityau ca cakṣuṣī.

54. Your two feet (pādau) are the Earth Goddess, Your arm (bāhuḥ) is the directions, Your head (śiraḥ) is the sky. I am Your form, the gods (surāḥ) are Your body, and the moon and sun are Your two eyes (cakṣuṣī).
बलं तपश्च सत्यं च धर्मः कामात्मजः प्रभो ।
तेजोऽग्निः पवनः श्वास आपस्ते स्वेदसंभवाः ॥५५॥
55. balaṁ tapaśca satyaṁ ca dharmaḥ kāmātmajaḥ prabho ,
tejo'gniḥ pavanaḥ śvāsa āpaste svedasaṁbhavāḥ.
55. balam tapaḥ ca satyam ca dharmaḥ kāmātmajaḥ prabho
tejaḥ agniḥ pavanaḥ śvāsaḥ āpaḥ te svedasaṃbhavāḥ
55. prabho balam ca tapaḥ ca satyam ca kāmātmajaḥ dharmaḥ;
tejaḥ agniḥ; pavanaḥ śvāsaḥ; te āpaḥ svedasaṃbhavāḥ
55. Your strength, austerity (tapas), truth, and natural law (dharma) born of desire (kāma) (are manifest in the world), O Lord (prabho)! Your radiance (tejas) is fire, Your breath is the wind, and Your waters (āpas) are born from sweat.
अश्विनौ श्रवणौ नित्यं देवी जिह्वा सरस्वती ।
वेदाः संस्कारनिष्ठा हि त्वयीदं जगदाश्रितम् ॥५६॥
56. aśvinau śravaṇau nityaṁ devī jihvā sarasvatī ,
vedāḥ saṁskāraniṣṭhā hi tvayīdaṁ jagadāśritam.

vedāḥ saṃskāraniṣṭhā hi tvayi idam jagat āśritam
56. The Aśvins are always the ears, and the goddess Sarasvatī is the tongue. Indeed, the Vedas, which are established in sacred rites (saṃskāra), and this entire world are dependent on you.
न संख्यां न परीमाणं न तेजो न पराक्रमम् ।
न बलं योगयोगीश जानीमस्ते न संभवम् ॥५७॥
57. na saṁkhyāṁ na parīmāṇaṁ na tejo na parākramam ,
na balaṁ yogayogīśa jānīmaste na saṁbhavam.
57. na saṅkhyām na parīmāṇam na tejaḥ na parākramam
na balam yogayogīśa jānīmaḥ te na saṃbhavam
57. O Lord of all masters of yoga (yoga), we do not know your count, nor your measure, nor your radiance, nor your valor, nor your strength, nor your origin.
त्वद्भक्तिनिरता देव नियमैस्त्वा समाहिताः ।
अर्चयामः सदा विष्णो परमेशं महेश्वरम् ॥५८॥
58. tvadbhaktiniratā deva niyamaistvā samāhitāḥ ,
arcayāmaḥ sadā viṣṇo parameśaṁ maheśvaram.
58. tvadbhaktiniratāḥ deva niyamaiḥ tvā samāhitāḥ
arcayāmaḥ sadā viṣṇo parameśam maheśvaram
58. O God, O Viṣṇu, we, who are dedicated to devotion (bhakti) for you and disciplined by observances, always worship you, the Supreme Lord (parameśa) and Great Lord (maheśvara).
ऋषयो देवगन्धर्वा यक्षराक्षसपन्नगाः ।
पिशाचा मानुषाश्चैव मृगपक्षिसरीसृपाः ॥५९॥
59. ṛṣayo devagandharvā yakṣarākṣasapannagāḥ ,
piśācā mānuṣāścaiva mṛgapakṣisarīsṛpāḥ.
59. ṛṣayaḥ devagandharvāḥ yakṣarākṣasapannagāḥ
piśācāḥ mānuṣāḥ ca eva mṛgapakṣisarīsṛpāḥ
59. Sages, gods, gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and pannagas; piśācas, humans, and indeed animals, birds, and reptiles.
एवमादि मया सृष्टं पृथिव्यां त्वत्प्रसादजम् ।
पद्मनाभ विशालाक्ष कृष्ण दुःस्वप्ननाशन ॥६०॥
60. evamādi mayā sṛṣṭaṁ pṛthivyāṁ tvatprasādajam ,
padmanābha viśālākṣa kṛṣṇa duḥsvapnanāśana.

60. O Padmanabha, O broad-eyed (viśālākṣa) Krishna, O destroyer of bad dreams, all this and similar things on earth have been created by me through your grace (prasāda).
त्वं गतिः सर्वभूतानां त्वं नेता त्वं जगन्मुखम् ।
त्वत्प्रसादेन देवेश सुखिनो विबुधाः सदा ॥६१॥
61. tvaṁ gatiḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ tvaṁ netā tvaṁ jaganmukham ,
tvatprasādena deveśa sukhino vibudhāḥ sadā.
61. tvam gatiḥ sarvabhūtānām tvam netā tvam jaganmukham
tvatprasādena deveśa sukhinaḥ vibudhāḥ sadā
61. deveśa tvam sarvabhūtānām gatiḥ tvam netā tvam
jaganmukham tvatprasādena vibudhāḥ sadā sukhinaḥ
61. You are the refuge (gati) of all beings, you are their leader, and you are the very source (jagatmukham) of the universe. O Lord of gods (deveśa), by your grace (prasāda), the gods are always happy.
पृथिवी निर्भया देव त्वत्प्रसादात्सदाभवत् ।
तस्माद्भव विशालाक्ष यदुवंशविवर्धनः ॥६२॥
62. pṛthivī nirbhayā deva tvatprasādātsadābhavat ,
tasmādbhava viśālākṣa yaduvaṁśavivardhanaḥ.
62. pṛthivī nirbhayā deva tvatprasādāt sadā abhavat
tasmāt bhava viśālākṣa yaduvamśavivardhanaḥ
62. deva viśālākṣa tvatprasādāt pṛthivī sadā nirbhayā
abhavat tasmāt yaduvamśavivardhanaḥ bhava
62. O God, the earth has always been fearless because of your grace (prasāda). Therefore, O broad-eyed one (viśālākṣa), be the one who increases the Yadu dynasty.
धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय दैतेयानां वधाय च ।
जगतो धारणार्थाय विज्ञाप्यं कुरु मे प्रभो ॥६३॥
63. dharmasaṁsthāpanārthāya daiteyānāṁ vadhāya ca ,
jagato dhāraṇārthāya vijñāpyaṁ kuru me prabho.
63. dharmasaṃsthāpanārthāya daiteyānām vadhāya ca
jagataḥ dhāraṇārthāya vijñāpyam kuru me prabho
63. prabho dharmasaṃsthāpanārthāya ca daiteyānām
vadhāya ca jagataḥ dhāraṇārthāya me vijñāpyam kuru
63. O Lord (prabho), for the purpose of establishing natural law (dharma), and for the slaying of the Daityas (daiteyānām), and for the sustenance of the world (jagat), please grant my request.
यदेतत्परमं गुह्यं त्वत्प्रसादमयं विभो ।
वासुदेव तदेतत्ते मयोद्गीतं यथातथम् ॥६४॥
64. yadetatparamaṁ guhyaṁ tvatprasādamayaṁ vibho ,
vāsudeva tadetatte mayodgītaṁ yathātatham.
64. yat etat paramam guhyam tvat-prasādamayam vibho
vāsudeva tat etat te mayā udgītam yathātatham
64. vibho vāsudeva,
tvat-prasādamayam yat etat paramam guhyam,
tat etat te mayā yathātatham udgītam.
64. O all-pervading Lord (vibho)! O Vāsudeva! This supreme secret (guhyam), which is entirely due to your grace (prasādam), has been sung by me to you exactly as it is.
सृष्ट्वा संकर्षणं देवं स्वयमात्मानमात्मना ।
कृष्ण त्वमात्मनास्राक्षीः प्रद्युम्नं चात्मसंभवम् ॥६५॥
65. sṛṣṭvā saṁkarṣaṇaṁ devaṁ svayamātmānamātmanā ,
kṛṣṇa tvamātmanāsrākṣīḥ pradyumnaṁ cātmasaṁbhavam.
65. sṛṣṭvā saṃkarṣaṇam devam svayam ātmānam ātmanā kṛṣṇa
tvam ātmanā asrākṣīḥ pradyumnam ca ātma-saṃbhavam
65. kṛṣṇa,
tvam sṛṣṭvā saṃkarṣaṇam devam svayam ātmānam,
ātmanā pradyumnam ca ātma-saṃbhavam asrākṣīḥ.
65. O Kṛṣṇa! Having created the divine Saṃkarṣaṇa, who is your very own Self (ātman), you yourself (tvam), by your Self (ātman), created Pradyumna, who also originated from your Self (ātman).
प्रद्युम्नाच्चानिरुद्धं त्वं यं विदुर्विष्णुमव्ययम् ।
अनिरुद्धोऽसृजन्मां वै ब्रह्माणं लोकधारिणम् ॥६६॥
66. pradyumnāccāniruddhaṁ tvaṁ yaṁ vidurviṣṇumavyayam ,
aniruddho'sṛjanmāṁ vai brahmāṇaṁ lokadhāriṇam.
66. pradyumnāt ca aniruddham tvam yam viduḥ viṣṇum avyayam
aniruddhaḥ asṛjat mām vai brahmāṇam loka-dhāriṇam
66. tvam ca pradyumnāt aniruddham asrākṣīḥ; yam (aniruddham) avyayam viṣṇum viduḥ.
aniruddhaḥ vai mām lokadhāriṇam brahmāṇam asṛjat.
66. And from Pradyumna, you (tvam) created Aniruddha, whom they know as the imperishable Viṣṇu. Aniruddha, indeed, created me, Brahmā, the sustainer of the worlds.
वासुदेवमयः सोऽहं त्वयैवास्मि विनिर्मितः ।
विभज्य भागशोऽऽत्मानं व्रज मानुषतां विभो ॥६७॥
67. vāsudevamayaḥ so'haṁ tvayaivāsmi vinirmitaḥ ,
vibhajya bhāgaśo''tmānaṁ vraja mānuṣatāṁ vibho.
67. vāsudevamayaḥ saḥ aham tvayā eva asmi vinirmitaḥ
vibhajya bhāgaśaḥ ātmānam vraja mānuṣatām vibho
67. vibho! vāsudevamayaḥ saḥ aham tvayā eva vinirmitaḥ asmi.
(tasmāt) ātmānam bhāgaśaḥ vibhajya mānuṣatām vraja.
67. O all-pervading Lord (vibho)! That I (saḥ aham), who am essentially Vāsudeva (Vāsudevamayaḥ), have indeed been created by you. Therefore, dividing your Self (ātman) into many parts, assume a human form.
तत्रासुरवधं कृत्वा सर्वलोकसुखाय वै ।
धर्मं स्थाप्य यशः प्राप्य योगं प्राप्स्यसि तत्त्वतः ॥६८॥
68. tatrāsuravadhaṁ kṛtvā sarvalokasukhāya vai ,
dharmaṁ sthāpya yaśaḥ prāpya yogaṁ prāpsyasi tattvataḥ.
68. tatra asuravadham kṛtvā sarvalokasukāya vai dharmam
sthāpya yaśaḥ prāpya yogam prāpsyasi tattvataḥ
68. tatra asuravadham kṛtvā sarvalokasukāya vai dharmam
sthāpya yaśaḥ prāpya tattvataḥ yogam prāpsyasi
68. Having slain the demons there for the welfare of all beings, and having established natural law (dharma), and having gained renown, you will truly achieve a state of perfect union (yoga).
त्वां हि ब्रह्मर्षयो लोके देवाश्चामितविक्रम ।
तैस्तैश्च नामभिर्भक्ता गायन्ति परमात्मकम् ॥६९॥
69. tvāṁ hi brahmarṣayo loke devāścāmitavikrama ,
taistaiśca nāmabhirbhaktā gāyanti paramātmakam.
69. tvām hi brahmarṣayaḥ loke devāḥ ca amita-vikrama
taiḥ taiḥ ca nāmabhiḥ bhaktāḥ gāyanti paramātmakam
69. amita-vikrama hi loke brahmarṣayaḥ devāḥ ca bhaktāḥ
ca taiḥ taiḥ nāmabhiḥ tvām paramātmakam gāyanti
69. Indeed, O you of immeasurable valor, the brahmin sages (brahmarṣi) and gods in this world, along with devotees, praise you as the supreme Self (paramātman) with various names.
स्थिताश्च सर्वे त्वयि भूतसंघाः कृत्वाश्रयं त्वां वरदं सुबाहो ।
अनादिमध्यान्तमपारयोगं लोकस्य सेतुं प्रवदन्ति विप्राः ॥७०॥
70. sthitāśca sarve tvayi bhūtasaṁghāḥ; kṛtvāśrayaṁ tvāṁ varadaṁ subāho ,
anādimadhyāntamapārayogaṁ; lokasya setuṁ pravadanti viprāḥ.
70. sthitāḥ ca sarve tvayi bhūtasanghāḥ
kṛtvā āśrayam tvām varadam subāho
anādi-madhya-antam apāra-yogam
lokasya setum pravadanti viprāḥ
70. subāho,
sarve bhūtasanghāḥ varadam tvām āśrayam kṛtvā ca tvayi sthitāḥ.
viprāḥ (tvām) anādi-madhya-antam apāra-yogam lokasya setum pravadanti.
70. O you of strong arms, all aggregates of beings (bhūtasangha) dwell in you, having taken refuge in you, the giver of boons. The wise ones (vipra) proclaim you to be without beginning, middle, or end, possessing immeasurable spiritual power (yoga), and the bridge of the world.
