Suta said: 'At that very time, the greatly ascetic (tapasvin) Jaratkaru, a sage who made his home wherever evening found him, wandered over the entire earth.'

2.
The greatly energetic sage, observing a difficult vow that cannot be undertaken by undisciplined souls, wandered about, performing ritual ablutions in holy and meritorious places.

The sage, subsisting on air, without food, and becoming emaciated day by day, saw his ancestors in a pit, hanging head downwards.

They were clinging to a clump of vīraṇa grass, which indeed had only a single fiber remaining. And that very fiber, a rat living in a hole was slowly gnawing.

Having approached his ancestors - who were without food, emaciated, miserable, suffering in the pit, and desiring salvation - the sage, appearing himself distressed, spoke to those wretched ones.

Due to so little remaining, even this (root) will be severed soon, as if in an instant. Then, you will fall headfirst into this pit here.

Or, let all of you overcome this entirely with my penance. Let this wish be fulfilled in this manner.

O dear son, best among those who speak (of sacred lore), we do have the fruits of our asceticism. But, O Brāhmaṇa, due to the cessation of our progeny, we are falling into an impure hell.

We are indeed ṛṣis known as Yāyāvaras, observers of strict vows. We have fallen from a meritorious realm to this place, O Lord, due to the cessation of our progeny.

18.
He, Jaratkāru by name, is indeed in our family, an unfortunate relative of those who have little fortune. He is renowned as one who has mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, a self-controlled, great-souled individual, of excellent vows, and dedicated to great austerities.

Because of his greed for asceticism, we have been brought to this distress. He has no wife, no son, nor any other relative.

O Brahmin, the mouse that you see - this is mighty Time. He gradually weakens that dull-witted one, devoted to penance, harassing him: Jaratkāru, who is greedy for penance, dull-minded, and heedless.

Indeed, his penance will not save us, O best of righteous men. Look at us, with our roots severed, utterly fallen, our minds impaired by time, and destined for hell, just like those who have committed evil deeds.
