वैशंपायन उवाच ।
उपासीनेषु विप्रेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ।
द्रौपदी सत्यभामा च विविशाते तदा समम् ।
जाहस्यमाने सुप्रीते सुखं तत्र निषीदतुः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
upāsīneṣu vipreṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu ,
draupadī satyabhāmā ca viviśāte tadā samam ,
jāhasyamāne suprīte sukhaṁ tatra niṣīdatuḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: While the Brahmins and the great-souled Pandavas were seated, Draupadi and Satyabhama then entered together. Laughing heartily and very pleased, they both sat down comfortably there.
चिरस्य दृष्ट्वा राजेन्द्र तेऽन्योन्यस्य प्रियंवदे ।
कथयामासतुश्चित्राः कथाः कुरुयदुक्षिताम् ॥२॥
2. cirasya dṛṣṭvā rājendra te'nyonyasya priyaṁvade ,
kathayāmāsatuścitrāḥ kathāḥ kuruyadukṣitām.
2. cirasya dṛṣṭvā rājendra te anyonyasya priyaṃvade
| kathayāmāsatuḥ citrāḥ kathāḥ kuru-yadu-kṣitām
2. O King, after seeing each other after a long time, those two (Draupadi and Satyabhama), who spoke kindly to one another, narrated wonderful stories related to the Kurus and Yadus.
अथाब्रवीत्सत्यभामा कृष्णस्य महिषी प्रिया ।
सात्राजिती याज्ञसेनीं रहसीदं सुमध्यमा ॥३॥
3. athābravītsatyabhāmā kṛṣṇasya mahiṣī priyā ,
sātrājitī yājñasenīṁ rahasīdaṁ sumadhyamā.
3. atha abravīt satyabhāmā kṛṣṇasya mahiṣī priyā
| sātrājitī yājñasenīm rahasi idam sumadhyamā
3. Then Satyabhama, Krishna's beloved queen, the daughter of Satrājit and one with a beautiful waist, said this in private to Draupadi, the daughter of Drupada (Yājñasenī).
केन द्रौपदि वृत्तेन पाण्डवानुपतिष्ठसि ।
लोकपालोपमान्वीरान्यूनः परमसंमतान् ।
कथं च वशगास्तुभ्यं न कुप्यन्ति च ते शुभे ॥४॥
4. kena draupadi vṛttena pāṇḍavānupatiṣṭhasi ,
lokapālopamānvīrānyūnaḥ paramasaṁmatān ,
kathaṁ ca vaśagāstubhyaṁ na kupyanti ca te śubhe.

4. "O Draupadi, by what conduct do you attend to the Pandavas - those heroes who are like the guardians of the world, young, and highly esteemed? And how is it, O auspicious one, that they remain obedient to you and never get angry?"
तव वश्या हि सततं पाण्डवाः प्रियदर्शने ।
मुखप्रेक्षाश्च ते सर्वे तत्त्वमेतद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥५॥
5. tava vaśyā hi satataṁ pāṇḍavāḥ priyadarśane ,
mukhaprekṣāśca te sarve tattvametadbravīhi me.
5. tava vaśyāḥ hi satatam pāṇḍavāḥ priyadarśane
mukhaprekṣāḥ ca te sarve tattvam etat bravīhi me
5. O lovely-faced one, the Pāṇḍavas are indeed always subservient to you. All of them look to you for guidance. Therefore, tell me this truth.
व्रतचर्या तपो वापि स्नानमन्त्रौषधानि वा ।
विद्यावीर्यं मूलवीर्यं जपहोमस्तथागदाः ॥६॥
6. vratacaryā tapo vāpi snānamantrauṣadhāni vā ,
vidyāvīryaṁ mūlavīryaṁ japahomastathāgadāḥ.
6. vratacaryā tapaḥ vā api snānamantrauṣadhāni vā
vidyāvīryam mūlavīryam japahomaḥ tathā agadāḥ
6. Is it through the observance of vows, or through asceticism (tapas)? Or through bathing, mantras, or medicines? Or through the power of knowledge, or the potency of herbs? Or through chanting (japa), sacrificial oblations (homa), or charms?
मम आचक्ष्व पाञ्चालि यशस्यं भगवेदनम् ।
येन कृष्णे भवेन्नित्यं मम कृष्णो वशानुगः ॥७॥
7. mama ācakṣva pāñcāli yaśasyaṁ bhagavedanam ,
yena kṛṣṇe bhavennityaṁ mama kṛṣṇo vaśānugaḥ.
7. mama ācakṣva Pāñcāli yaśasyam bhagavedanam
yena kṛṣṇe bhavet nityam mama kṛṣṇaḥ vaśānugaḥ
7. O Pāñcālī, tell me that glorious secret, that knowledge of fortune (bhagavedanam), by which my Kṛṣṇa (Lord Kṛṣṇa) may always remain obedient to me.
एवमुक्त्वा सत्यभामा विरराम यशस्विनी ।
पतिव्रता महाभागा द्रौपदी प्रत्युवाच ताम् ॥८॥
8. evamuktvā satyabhāmā virarāma yaśasvinī ,
pativratā mahābhāgā draupadī pratyuvāca tām.

8. Having spoken thus, the glorious Satyabhāmā fell silent. Then, Draupadī, the devoted and greatly fortunate wife, replied to her.
असत्स्त्रीणां समाचारं सत्ये मामनुपृच्छसि ।
असदाचरिते मार्गे कथं स्यादनुकीर्तनम् ॥९॥
9. asatstrīṇāṁ samācāraṁ satye māmanupṛcchasi ,
asadācarite mārge kathaṁ syādanukīrtanam.
9. asatstrīṇām samācāram satye mām anupṛcchasi
asadācarite mārge katham syāt anukīrtanam
9. You truly ask me about the conduct of unchaste women. How can there be any remembrance or glorification on a path that is improperly trodden?
अनुप्रश्नः संशयो वा नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते ।
तथा ह्युपेता बुद्ध्या त्वं कृष्णस्य महिषी प्रिया ॥१०॥
10. anupraśnaḥ saṁśayo vā naitattvayyupapadyate ,
tathā hyupetā buddhyā tvaṁ kṛṣṇasya mahiṣī priyā.
10. anuprasnaḥ saṃśayaḥ vā na etat tvayi upapadyate
tathā hi upetā buddhyā tvam kṛṣṇasya mahiṣī priyā
10. Such a probing question or a doubt is not fitting for you. For indeed, you are endowed with understanding, and you are Kṛṣṇa's beloved chief queen.
यदैव भर्ता जानीयान्मन्त्रमूलपरां स्त्रियम् ।
उद्विजेत तदैवास्याः सर्पाद्वेश्मगतादिव ॥११॥
11. yadaiva bhartā jānīyānmantramūlaparāṁ striyam ,
udvijeta tadaivāsyāḥ sarpādveśmagatādiva.
11. yadā eva bhartā jānīyāt mantramūlaparām striyam
udvijeta tadā eva asyāḥ sarpāt veśmagatāt iva
11. As soon as a husband recognizes a woman who relies primarily on charms and spells, he would recoil from her, just as one recoils from a snake that has entered the house.
उद्विग्नस्य कुतः शान्तिरशान्तस्य कुतः सुखम् ।
न जातु वशगो भर्ता स्त्रियाः स्यान्मन्त्रकारणात् ॥१२॥
12. udvignasya kutaḥ śāntiraśāntasya kutaḥ sukham ,
na jātu vaśago bhartā striyāḥ syānmantrakāraṇāt.
12. udvignasya kutaḥ śāntiḥ aśāntasya kutaḥ sukham na
jātu vaśagaḥ bhartā striyāḥ syāt mantrakāraṇāt
12. How can there be peace for an agitated person? And how can there be happiness for a restless one? A husband will never become subservient to a woman due to magic spells.
अमित्रप्रहितांश्चापि गदान्परमदारुणान् ।
मूलप्रवादैर्हि विषं प्रयच्छन्ति जिघांसवः ॥१३॥
13. amitraprahitāṁścāpi gadānparamadāruṇān ,
mūlapravādairhi viṣaṁ prayacchanti jighāṁsavaḥ.
13. amitra-prahitān ca api gadān parama-dāruṇān
mūlapravādaiḥ hi viṣam prayacchanti jighāṃsavaḥ
13. Those who desire to kill administer exceedingly terrible diseases, and also poisons sent by enemies, through the use of roots and incantations.
जिह्वया यानि पुरुषस्त्वचा वाप्युपसेवते ।
तत्र चूर्णानि दत्तानि हन्युः क्षिप्रमसंशयम् ॥१४॥
14. jihvayā yāni puruṣastvacā vāpyupasevate ,
tatra cūrṇāni dattāni hanyuḥ kṣipramasaṁśayam.
14. jihvayā yāni puruṣaḥ tvacā vā api upasevate
tatra cūrṇāni dattāni hanyuḥ kṣipram asaṃśayam
14. Powders administered into those things that a person (puruṣa) consumes by tongue or by skin would undoubtedly kill quickly.
जलोदरसमायुक्ताः श्वित्रिणः पलितास्तथा ।
अपुमांसः कृताः स्त्रीभिर्जडान्धबधिरास्तथा ॥१५॥
15. jalodarasamāyuktāḥ śvitriṇaḥ palitāstathā ,
apumāṁsaḥ kṛtāḥ strībhirjaḍāndhabadhirāstathā.
15. jalodara-samāyuktāḥ śvitriṇaḥ palitāḥ tathā
apumāṃsaḥ kṛtāḥ strībhiḥ jaḍāndhabadhirāḥ tathā
15. They are made afflicted with dropsy (jalodara), become lepers (śvitriṇaḥ), gray-haired, and impotent by women; and likewise, dull-witted, blind, and deaf.
पापानुगास्तु पापास्ताः पतीनुपसृजन्त्युत ।
न जातु विप्रियं भर्तुः स्त्रिया कार्यं कथंचन ॥१६॥
16. pāpānugāstu pāpāstāḥ patīnupasṛjantyuta ,
na jātu vipriyaṁ bhartuḥ striyā kāryaṁ kathaṁcana.
16. pāpānugāḥ tu pāpāḥ tāḥ patīn upasṛjanti uta na
jātu vipriyam bhartuḥ striyā kāryam kathaṃcana
16. Indeed, those sinful women who follow evil afflict their husbands. A wife should never, in any way whatsoever, do what is disagreeable to her husband.
वर्ताम्यहं तु यां वृत्तिं पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ।
तां सर्वां शृणु मे सत्यां सत्यभामे यशस्विनि ॥१७॥
17. vartāmyahaṁ tu yāṁ vṛttiṁ pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu ,
tāṁ sarvāṁ śṛṇu me satyāṁ satyabhāme yaśasvini.
17. vartāmi aham tu yām vṛttim pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu
tām sarvām śṛṇu me satyām satyabhāme yaśasvini
17. O glorious Satyabhāmā, listen to me and understand fully the true conduct which I maintain towards the great-souled Pandavas.
अहंकारं विहायाहं कामक्रोधौ च सर्वदा ।
सदारान्पाण्डवान्नित्यं प्रयतोपचराम्यहम् ॥१८॥
18. ahaṁkāraṁ vihāyāhaṁ kāmakrodhau ca sarvadā ,
sadārānpāṇḍavānnityaṁ prayatopacarāmyaham.
18. ahaṅkāram vihāya aham kāmakrodhau ca sarvadā
sadārān pāṇḍavān nityam prayataḥ upacarāmi aham
18. Always abandoning ego (ahaṅkāra), desire, and anger, I constantly and diligently attend to the Pandavas along with their wives.
प्रणयं प्रतिसंगृह्य निधायात्मानमात्मनि ।
शुश्रूषुर्निरभीमाना पतीनां चित्तरक्षिणी ॥१९॥
19. praṇayaṁ pratisaṁgṛhya nidhāyātmānamātmani ,
śuśrūṣurnirabhīmānā patīnāṁ cittarakṣiṇī.
19. praṇayam pratisaṅgṛhya nidhāya ātmānam ātmani
śuśrūṣuḥ nirabhīmānā patīnām cittarakṣiṇī
19. Withdrawing my (external) affection and fixing my mind within my own (ātman) self, I am eager to serve, free from pride, and a protector of my husbands' hearts.
दुर्व्याहृताच्छङ्कमाना दुःस्थिताद्दुरवेक्षितात् ।
दुरासिताद्दुर्व्रजितादिङ्गिताध्यासितादपि ॥२०॥
20. durvyāhṛtācchaṅkamānā duḥsthitādduravekṣitāt ,
durāsitāddurvrajitādiṅgitādhyāsitādapi.
20. durvyāhṛtāt śaṅkamānā duḥsthitāt duravekṣitāt
durāsitāt durvrajitāt iṅgitādhyāsitāt api
20. I am fearful of improper speech, inappropriate posture, improper glances, improper sitting, improper walking, and even misleading gestures.
सूर्यवैश्वानरनिभान्सोमकल्पान्महारथान् ।
सेवे चक्षुर्हणः पार्थानुग्रतेजःप्रतापिनः ॥२१॥
21. sūryavaiśvānaranibhānsomakalpānmahārathān ,
seve cakṣurhaṇaḥ pārthānugratejaḥpratāpinaḥ.
21. sūryavaiśvanaranibhān somakalpān mahārathān
seve cakṣuḥhaṇaḥ pārthān ugratejaḥpratāpinaḥ
21. I serve the great charioteers, the sons of Pṛthā, who are like the Sun and the sacrificial fire (vaiśvānara), resembling Soma (the moon), blinding to the sight, and possessing fierce splendor and valor.
देवो मनुष्यो गन्धर्वो युवा चापि स्वलंकृतः ।
द्रव्यवानभिरूपो वा न मेऽन्यः पुरुषो मतः ॥२२॥
22. devo manuṣyo gandharvo yuvā cāpi svalaṁkṛtaḥ ,
dravyavānabhirūpo vā na me'nyaḥ puruṣo mataḥ.
22. devaḥ manuṣyaḥ gandharvaḥ yuvā ca api sualaṅkṛtaḥ
dravyavān abhirūpaḥ vā na me anyaḥ puruṣaḥ mataḥ
22. Whether a god, a human, or a gandharva, or even a well-adorned young man, or one who is wealthy and handsome, no other person (puruṣa) is esteemed by me.
नाभुक्तवति नास्नाते नासंविष्टे च भर्तरि ।
न संविशामि नाश्नामि सदा कर्मकरेष्वपि ॥२३॥
23. nābhuktavati nāsnāte nāsaṁviṣṭe ca bhartari ,
na saṁviśāmi nāśnāmi sadā karmakareṣvapi.
23. na abhuktavati na asnāte na asaṃviṣṭe ca bhartari
na saṃviśāmi na aśnāmi sadā karmakareṣu api
23. I do not lie down or eat as long as my husband has not eaten, bathed, or rested, even when I am with the servants.
क्षेत्राद्वनाद्वा ग्रामाद्वा भर्तारं गृहमागतम् ।
प्रत्युत्थायाभिनन्दामि आसनेनोदकेन च ॥२४॥
24. kṣetrādvanādvā grāmādvā bhartāraṁ gṛhamāgatam ,
pratyutthāyābhinandāmi āsanenodakena ca.
24. kṣetrāt vanāt vā grāmāt vā bhartāram gṛham āgatam
pratyutthāya abhinandāmi āsanena udakena ca
24. When my husband arrives home, whether from the field, the forest, or the village, I rise up to greet and welcome him with a seat and water.
प्रमृष्टभाण्डा मृष्टान्ना काले भोजनदायिनी ।
संयता गुप्तधान्या च सुसंमृष्टनिवेशना ॥२५॥
25. pramṛṣṭabhāṇḍā mṛṣṭānnā kāle bhojanadāyinī ,
saṁyatā guptadhānyā ca susaṁmṛṣṭaniveśanā.
25. pramṛṣṭabhāṇḍā mṛṣṭānnā kāle bhojanadāyinī
saṃyatā guptadhānyā ca susaṃmṛṣṭaniveśanā
25. I am one who keeps her vessels well-cleaned, prepares delicious food, serves meals at the proper time, is self-controlled, keeps her grains safely stored, and her dwelling well-swept.
अतिरस्कृतसंभाषा दुःस्त्रियो नानुसेवती ।
अनुकूलवती नित्यं भवाम्यनलसा सदा ॥२६॥
26. atiraskṛtasaṁbhāṣā duḥstriyo nānusevatī ,
anukūlavatī nityaṁ bhavāmyanalasā sadā.
26. atiraskṛtasaṃbhāṣā duḥstriyaḥ na anusevatī
anukūlavatī nityaṃ bhavāmi analasā sadā
26. I speak respectfully, do not associate with bad women, and always remain agreeable and diligent.
अनर्मे चापि हसनं द्वारि स्थानमभीक्ष्णशः ।
अवस्करे चिरस्थानं निष्कुटेषु च वर्जये ॥२७॥
27. anarme cāpi hasanaṁ dvāri sthānamabhīkṣṇaśaḥ ,
avaskare cirasthānaṁ niṣkuṭeṣu ca varjaye.
27. anarme ca api hasanaṃ dvāri sthānaṃ abhīkṣṇaśaḥ
avaskare cirasthānaṃ niṣkuṭeṣu ca varjayet
27. I should avoid laughing at inappropriate times, standing frequently at the doorway, lingering long by the rubbish heap, and staying in private gardens.
अतिहासातिरोषौ च क्रोधस्थानं च वर्जये ।
निरताहं सदा सत्ये भर्तॄणामुपसेवने ।
सर्वथा भर्तृरहितं न ममेष्टं कथंचन ॥२८॥
28. atihāsātiroṣau ca krodhasthānaṁ ca varjaye ,
niratāhaṁ sadā satye bhartṝṇāmupasevane ,
sarvathā bhartṛrahitaṁ na mameṣṭaṁ kathaṁcana.
28. atihāsātiroṣau ca krodhasthānaṃ ca
varjayet niratā ahaṃ sadā satye
bhartṝṇām upasevane sarvathā
bhartṛrahitaṃ na mama iṣṭaṃ kathaṃcana
28. I should avoid excessive laughter and anger, as well as situations that provoke anger. I am always committed to truth and to serving my husbands. By no means is a life without a husband desirable to me.
यदा प्रवसते भर्ता कुटुम्बार्थेन केनचित् ।
सुमनोवर्णकापेता भवामि व्रतचारिणी ॥२९॥
29. yadā pravasate bhartā kuṭumbārthena kenacit ,
sumanovarṇakāpetā bhavāmi vratacāriṇī.
29. yadā pravasate bhartā kuṭumbārthena kenacit
sumanovaraṇakāpetā bhavāmi vratacāriṇī
29. When my husband travels abroad for some family purpose, I observe vows and abstain from flowers and adornments.
यच्च भर्ता न पिबति यच्च भर्ता न खादति ।
यच्च नाश्नाति मे भर्ता सर्वं तद्वर्जयाम्यहम् ॥३०॥
30. yacca bhartā na pibati yacca bhartā na khādati ,
yacca nāśnāti me bhartā sarvaṁ tadvarjayāmyaham.
30. yat ca bhartā na pibati yat ca bhartā na khādati
yat ca na aśnāti me bhartā sarvam tat varjayāmi aham
30. Whatever my husband does not drink, whatever he does not eat, and whatever else my husband does not consume - all of that I abstain from.
यथोपदेशं नियता वर्तमाना वराङ्गने ।
स्वलंकृता सुप्रयता भर्तुः प्रियहिते रता ॥३१॥
31. yathopadeśaṁ niyatā vartamānā varāṅgane ,
svalaṁkṛtā suprayatā bhartuḥ priyahite ratā.
31. yathā upadeśam niyatā vartamānā varāṅgane
svalaṅkṛtā suprayatā bhartuḥ priyahite ratā
31. O excellent lady, I remain disciplined according to instruction, being well-adorned and very diligent, devoted to what is dear and beneficial to my husband.
ये च धर्माः कुटुम्बेषु श्वश्र्वा मे कथिताः पुरा ।
भिक्षाबलिश्राद्धमिति स्थालीपाकाश्च पर्वसु ।
मान्यानां मानसत्कारा ये चान्ये विदिता मया ॥३२॥
32. ye ca dharmāḥ kuṭumbeṣu śvaśrvā me kathitāḥ purā ,
bhikṣābaliśrāddhamiti sthālīpākāśca parvasu ,
mānyānāṁ mānasatkārā ye cānye viditā mayā.
32. ye ca dharmāḥ kuṭumbeṣu śvaśrvā me
kathitāḥ purā bhikṣābaliśrāddham iti
sthālīpākāḥ ca parvasu mānyānām
mānasatkārāḥ ye ca anye viditāḥ mayā
32. And those duties (dharma) pertaining to family life, which my mother-in-law formerly instructed me in - such as giving alms, making offerings (bali), performing ancestral rites (śrāddha), and offering pot-cooked oblations on festival days - as well as other acts of honor and respect for the venerable ones that I have learned through my own understanding.
तान्सर्वाननुवर्तामि दिवारात्रमतन्द्रिता ।
विनयान्नियमांश्चापि सदा सर्वात्मना श्रिता ॥३३॥
33. tānsarvānanuvartāmi divārātramatandritā ,
vinayānniyamāṁścāpi sadā sarvātmanā śritā.
33. tān sarvān anuvarrtāmi divārātram atandritā
vinayāt niyamān ca api sadā sarvātmanā śritā
33. Unwearied, I attend to all of them day and night. With humility, and always adhering to the rules, I am fully devoted with my whole being.
मृदून्सतः सत्यशीलान्सत्यधर्मानुपालिनः ।
आशीविषानिव क्रुद्धान्पतीन्परिचराम्यहम् ॥३४॥
34. mṛdūnsataḥ satyaśīlānsatyadharmānupālinaḥ ,
āśīviṣāniva kruddhānpatīnparicarāmyaham.
34. mṛdūn sataḥ satyaśīlān satyadharmānupālinaḥ
āśīviṣān iva kruddhān patīn paricarāmi aham
34. I serve my husbands, who, though gentle, virtuous, truthful in conduct, and upholders of truth and natural law (dharma), can sometimes be enraged like venomous serpents.
पत्याश्रयो हि मे धर्मो मतः स्त्रीणां सनातनः ।
स देवः सा गतिर्नान्या तस्य का विप्रियं चरेत् ॥३५॥
35. patyāśrayo hi me dharmo mataḥ strīṇāṁ sanātanaḥ ,
sa devaḥ sā gatirnānyā tasya kā vipriyaṁ caret.
35. patyāśrayaḥ hi me dharmaḥ mataḥ strīṇām sanātanaḥ
sa devaḥ sā gatiḥ na anyā tasya kā vipriyam caret
35. Indeed, for women, reliance on their husband is considered my eternal natural law (dharma). He is a god, he is my destination; there is no other. Who would do anything displeasing to him?
अहं पतीन्नातिशये नात्यश्ने नातिभूषये ।
नापि परिवदे श्वश्रूं सर्वदा परियन्त्रिता ॥३६॥
36. ahaṁ patīnnātiśaye nātyaśne nātibhūṣaye ,
nāpi parivade śvaśrūṁ sarvadā pariyantritā.
36. aham patīn na ati śaye na ati aśne na ati bhūṣaye
na api parivade śvaśrūm sarvadā pariyantritā
36. I do not outshine my husbands, nor do I overeat or over-adorn myself. Moreover, I never speak ill of my mother-in-law, always maintaining self-control.
अवधानेन सुभगे नित्योत्थानतयैव च ।
भर्तारो वशगा मह्यं गुरुशुश्रूषणेन च ॥३७॥
37. avadhānena subhage nityotthānatayaiva ca ,
bhartāro vaśagā mahyaṁ guruśuśrūṣaṇena ca.
37. avadhānena subhage nitya utthānatayā eva ca
bhartāraḥ vaśagāḥ mahyam guruśuśrūṣaṇena ca
37. O beautiful one, through attentiveness, constant diligence, and service to my elders (guru), my husbands are obedient to me.
नित्यमार्यामहं कुन्तीं वीरसूं सत्यवादिनीम् ।
स्वयं परिचराम्येका स्नानाच्छादनभोजनैः ॥३८॥
38. nityamāryāmahaṁ kuntīṁ vīrasūṁ satyavādinīm ,
svayaṁ paricarāmyekā snānācchādanabhojanaiḥ.
38. nityam āryām aham kuntīm vīrasūm satyavādinīm
svayam paricarāmi ekā snānācchādanabhojanaiḥ
38. Constantly, I myself alone attend to the noble Kunti, the mother of heroes and truth-speaker, providing her with baths, clothing, and food.
नैतामतिशये जातु वस्त्रभूषणभोजनैः ।
नापि परिवदे चाहं तां पृथां पृथिवीसमाम् ॥३९॥
39. naitāmatiśaye jātu vastrabhūṣaṇabhojanaiḥ ,
nāpi parivade cāhaṁ tāṁ pṛthāṁ pṛthivīsamām.
39. na etām atiśaye jātu vastrabhūṣaṇabhojanaiḥ na
api parivade ca aham tām pṛthām pṛthivīsamām
39. I never try to surpass her with clothes, ornaments, or food; nor do I slander that Pritha, who is equal to the earth.
अष्टावग्रे ब्राह्मणानां सहस्राणि स्म नित्यदा ।
भुञ्जते रुक्मपात्रीषु युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने ॥४०॥
40. aṣṭāvagre brāhmaṇānāṁ sahasrāṇi sma nityadā ,
bhuñjate rukmapātrīṣu yudhiṣṭhiraniveśane.
40. aṣṭau agre brāhmaṇānām sahasrāṇi sma nityadā
bhuñjate rukmapātrīṣu yudhiṣṭhiraniveśane
40. As many as eight thousand Brahmins (brāhmaṇa) would daily dine in golden plates in Yudhishthira's abode.
अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि स्नातका गृहमेधिनः ।
त्रिंशद्दासीक एकैको यान्बिभर्ति युधिष्ठिरः ॥४१॥
41. aṣṭāśītisahasrāṇi snātakā gṛhamedhinaḥ ,
triṁśaddāsīka ekaiko yānbibharti yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
41. aṣṭāśītisahasrāṇi snātakāḥ gṛhamedhinaḥ
triṃśaddāsīkaḥ ekaikaḥ yān bibharti yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
41. King Yudhishthira maintains eighty-eight thousand householders (snātaka-gṛhamedhin), each of whom has thirty female servants.
दशान्यानि सहस्राणि येषामन्नं सुसंस्कृतम् ।
ह्रियते रुक्मपात्रीभिर्यतीनामूर्ध्वरेतसाम् ॥४२॥
42. daśānyāni sahasrāṇi yeṣāmannaṁ susaṁskṛtam ,
hriyate rukmapātrībhiryatīnāmūrdhvaretasām.
42. daśānyāni sahasrāṇi yeṣām annam susaṃskṛtam
hriyate rukmapātrībhiḥ yatīnām ūrdhvaretasām
42. Additionally, for another ten thousand ascetics (yati), those who maintain celibacy (ūrdhvaretasāṃ), well-prepared food is carried in golden vessels.
तान्सर्वानग्रहारेण ब्राह्मणान्ब्रह्मवादिनः ।
यथार्हं पूजयामि स्म पानाच्छादनभोजनैः ॥४३॥
43. tānsarvānagrahāreṇa brāhmaṇānbrahmavādinaḥ ,
yathārhaṁ pūjayāmi sma pānācchādanabhojanaiḥ.
43. tān sarvān agrahāreṇa brāhmaṇān brahmavādinaḥ
yathārham pūjayāmi sma pānācchādanabhojanaiḥ
43. I used to honor all those Brahmins (brahmavādin) appropriately with grants of land (agrahāra), and with drinks, clothing, and food.
शतं दासीसहस्राणि कौन्तेयस्य महात्मनः ।
कम्बुकेयूरधारिण्यो निष्ककण्ठ्यः स्वलंकृताः ॥४४॥
44. śataṁ dāsīsahasrāṇi kaunteyasya mahātmanaḥ ,
kambukeyūradhāriṇyo niṣkakaṇṭhyaḥ svalaṁkṛtāḥ.
44. śatam dāsīsahasrāṇi kaunteyasya mahātmanaḥ
kambukeyūradhāriṇyaḥ niṣkakaṇṭhyaḥ svalaṅkṛtāḥ
44. There were a hundred thousand female servants belonging to the great-souled son of Kunti (Kāunteya), wearing conch-shell bracelets and armlets, and adorned with golden necklaces.
महार्हमाल्याभरणाः सुवर्णाश्चन्दनोक्षिताः ।
मणीन्हेम च बिभ्रत्यो नृत्यगीतविशारदाः ॥४५॥
45. mahārhamālyābharaṇāḥ suvarṇāścandanokṣitāḥ ,
maṇīnhema ca bibhratyo nṛtyagītaviśāradāḥ.
45. mahārhamālyābharaṇāḥ suvarṇāḥ candanokṣitāḥ
maṇīn hema ca bibhratyaḥ nṛtyagītaviśāradāḥ
45. They were adorned with precious garlands and ornaments, golden-hued, anointed with sandalwood paste, wearing jewels and gold, and highly skilled in dance and song.
तासां नाम च रूपं च भोजनाच्छादनानि च ।
सर्वासामेव वेदाहं कर्म चैव कृताकृतम् ॥४६॥
46. tāsāṁ nāma ca rūpaṁ ca bhojanācchādanāni ca ,
sarvāsāmeva vedāhaṁ karma caiva kṛtākṛtam.
46. tāsām nāma ca rūpam ca bhojanācchādanāni ca
sarvāsām eva veda aham karma ca eva kṛtākṛtam
46. Indeed, I know the names, appearances, food, and clothing of all of them, as well as their actions (karma), both those they have performed and those they have not.
शतं दासीसहस्राणि कुन्तीपुत्रस्य धीमतः ।
पात्रीहस्ता दिवारात्रमतिथीन्भोजयन्त्युत ॥४७॥
47. śataṁ dāsīsahasrāṇi kuntīputrasya dhīmataḥ ,
pātrīhastā divārātramatithīnbhojayantyuta.
47. śatam dāsīsahasrāṇi kuntīputrasya dhīmataḥ
pātrīhastāḥ divārātram atithīn bhojayanti uta
47. Hundreds of thousands of maidservants belonging to the wise son of Kunti (Yudhiṣṭhira), with vessels in their hands, tirelessly feed guests day and night.
शतमश्वसहस्राणि दश नागायुतानि च ।
युधिष्ठिरस्यानुयात्रमिन्द्रप्रस्थनिवासिनः ॥४८॥
48. śatamaśvasahasrāṇi daśa nāgāyutāni ca ,
yudhiṣṭhirasyānuyātramindraprasthanivāsinaḥ.
48. śatam aśvasahasrāṇi daśa nāgāyutāni ca
yudhiṣṭhirasya anuyātram indraprasthanivāsinaḥ
48. Hundreds of thousands of horses and one hundred thousand elephants constituted the retinue of Yudhiṣṭhira, who resided in Indraprastha.
एतदासीत्तदा राज्ञो यन्महीं पर्यपालयत् ।
येषां संख्याविधिं चैव प्रदिशामि शृणोमि च ॥४९॥
49. etadāsīttadā rājño yanmahīṁ paryapālayat ,
yeṣāṁ saṁkhyāvidhiṁ caiva pradiśāmi śṛṇomi ca.
49. etat āsīt tadā rājñaḥ yat mahīm paryapālayat
yeṣām saṃkhyāvidhim ca eva pradiśāmi śṛṇomi ca
49. This was the king's situation then, that he protected the earth. As for those (under his rule), I both instruct and receive information regarding the method of their accounting.
अन्तःपुराणां सर्वेषां भृत्यानां चैव सर्वशः ।
आ गोपालाविपालेभ्यः सर्वं वेद कृताकृतम् ॥५०॥
50. antaḥpurāṇāṁ sarveṣāṁ bhṛtyānāṁ caiva sarvaśaḥ ,
ā gopālāvipālebhyaḥ sarvaṁ veda kṛtākṛtam.
50. antaḥpurāṇām sarveṣām bhṛtyānām ca eva sarvaśaḥ
ā gopāla-avipālebhyah sarvam veda kṛta-akṛtam
50. I know all that has been done and left undone concerning everyone: all the women of the inner apartments, all the servants, right down from the cowherds to the shepherds.
सर्वं राज्ञः समुदयमायं च व्ययमेव च ।
एकाहं वेद्मि कल्याणि पाण्डवानां यशस्विनाम् ॥५१॥
51. sarvaṁ rājñaḥ samudayamāyaṁ ca vyayameva ca ,
ekāhaṁ vedmi kalyāṇi pāṇḍavānāṁ yaśasvinām.
51. sarvam rājñaḥ samudayam āyam ca vyayam eva ca
ekā aham vedmi kalyāṇi pāṇḍavānām yaśasvinām
51. O virtuous lady (kalyāṇi), only I know all the king's prosperity, income, and expenditure, and also that of the glorious Pāṇḍavas.
मयि सर्वं समासज्य कुटुम्बं भरतर्षभाः ।
उपासनरताः सर्वे घटन्ते स्म शुभानने ॥५२॥
52. mayi sarvaṁ samāsajya kuṭumbaṁ bharatarṣabhāḥ ,
upāsanaratāḥ sarve ghaṭante sma śubhānane.
52. mayi sarvam samāsajya kuṭumbam bharatarṣabhāḥ
upāsanaratāḥ sarve ghaṭante sma śubhānane
52. O best of Bhāratas, having entrusted the entire family to me, they were all devoted to spiritual practice (upāsanā), O beautiful-faced one.
तमहं भारमासक्तमनाधृष्यं दुरात्मभिः ।
सुखं सर्वं परित्यज्य रात्र्यहानि घटामि वै ॥५३॥
53. tamahaṁ bhāramāsaktamanādhṛṣyaṁ durātmabhiḥ ,
sukhaṁ sarvaṁ parityajya rātryahāni ghaṭāmi vai.
53. tam aham bhāram āsaktam anādhṛṣyam durātmabhiḥ
sukham sarvam parityajya rātryahāni ghaṭāmi vai
53. Having entirely given up all comfort, I dedicate myself day and night to that responsibility (bhāra), which is unassailable by evil-minded individuals and to which I am deeply attached.
अधृष्यं वरुणस्येव निधिपूर्णमिवोदधिम् ।
एकाहं वेद्मि कोशं वै पतीनां धर्मचारिणाम् ॥५४॥
54. adhṛṣyaṁ varuṇasyeva nidhipūrṇamivodadhim ,
ekāhaṁ vedmi kośaṁ vai patīnāṁ dharmacāriṇām.
54. adhṛṣyam varuṇasya iva nidhipūrṇam iva udadhim
ekā aham vedmi kośam vai patīnām dharmacāriṇām
54. I alone know that the treasury (kośa) of my husbands, who uphold their moral and natural law (dharma), is unassailable like that of Varuṇa, and like an ocean brimming with riches.
अनिशायां निशायां च सहायाः क्षुत्पिपासयोः ।
आराधयन्त्याः कौरव्यांस्तुल्या रात्रिरहश्च मे ॥५५॥
55. aniśāyāṁ niśāyāṁ ca sahāyāḥ kṣutpipāsayoḥ ,
ārādhayantyāḥ kauravyāṁstulyā rātrirahaśca me.
55. aniśāyām niśāyām ca sahāyāḥ kṣutpipāsayoḥ
ārādhayantyāḥ kauravyān tulyā rātriḥ ahaḥ ca me
55. Whether by day or by night, hunger and thirst are my companions. As I attend to the Kauravas [my husbands], day and night are alike for me.
प्रथमं प्रतिबुध्यामि चरमं संविशामि च ।
नित्यकालमहं सत्ये एतत्संवननं मम ॥५६॥
56. prathamaṁ pratibudhyāmi caramaṁ saṁviśāmi ca ,
nityakālamahaṁ satye etatsaṁvananaṁ mama.
56. prathamam pratibudhyāmi caram am saṃviśāmi ca
nityakālam aham satye etat saṃvananam mama
56. I am the first to awaken and the last to retire. O truthful one (satye), this constant dedication of mine is my way of winning affection (saṃvanana).
एतज्जानाम्यहं कर्तुं भर्तृसंवननं महत् ।
असत्स्त्रीणां समाचारं नाहं कुर्यां न कामये ॥५७॥
57. etajjānāmyahaṁ kartuṁ bhartṛsaṁvananaṁ mahat ,
asatstrīṇāṁ samācāraṁ nāhaṁ kuryāṁ na kāmaye.
57. etat jānāmi aham kartum bhartṛsaṃvananam mahat
asatstrīṇām samācāram na aham kuryām na kāmaye
57. I know how to perform this great charm to win over a husband. However, I would neither practice nor desire the conduct of unchaste women.
तच्छ्रुत्वा धर्मसहितं व्याहृतं कृष्णया तदा ।
उवाच सत्या सत्कृत्य पाञ्चालीं धर्मचारिणीम् ॥५८॥
58. tacchrutvā dharmasahitaṁ vyāhṛtaṁ kṛṣṇayā tadā ,
uvāca satyā satkṛtya pāñcālīṁ dharmacāriṇīm.
58. tat śrutvā dharmasahitam vyāhṛtam kṛṣṇayā tadā
uvāca satyā satkṛtya pāñcālīm dharmacāriṇīm
58. Having then heard those righteous words spoken by Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), Satyā (Satyabhāmā) respectfully addressed Pañcālī (Draupadī), the woman devoted to natural law (dharma).
अभिपन्नास्मि पाञ्चालि याज्ञसेनि क्षमस्व मे ।
कामकारः सखीनां हि सोपहासं प्रभाषितुम् ॥५९॥
59. abhipannāsmi pāñcāli yājñaseni kṣamasva me ,
kāmakāraḥ sakhīnāṁ hi sopahāsaṁ prabhāṣitum.
59. abhipannā asmi pāñcāli yājñaseni kṣamasva me
kāmakāraḥ sakhīnām hi sopahāsam prabhāṣitum
59. O Pañcālī, O Yājñasenī, I have approached you (for forgiveness); please forgive me. It is indeed the custom of friends to speak playfully.
