वैशंपायन उवाच ।
उपासीनेषु विप्रेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ।
द्रौपदी सत्यभामा च विविशाते तदा समम् ।
जाहस्यमाने सुप्रीते सुखं तत्र निषीदतुः ॥१॥

Vaiśampāyana said: While the Brahmins and the great-souled Pandavas were seated, Draupadi and Satyabhama then entered together. Laughing heartily and very pleased, they both sat down comfortably there.
चिरस्य दृष्ट्वा राजेन्द्र तेऽन्योन्यस्य प्रियंवदे ।
कथयामासतुश्चित्राः कथाः कुरुयदुक्षिताम् ॥२॥

O King, after seeing each other after a long time, those two (Draupadi and Satyabhama), who spoke kindly to one another, narrated wonderful stories related to the Kurus and Yadus.
अथाब्रवीत्सत्यभामा कृष्णस्य महिषी प्रिया ।
सात्राजिती याज्ञसेनीं रहसीदं सुमध्यमा ॥३॥

Then Satyabhama, Krishna's beloved queen, the daughter of Satrājit and one with a beautiful waist, said this in private to Draupadi, the daughter of Drupada (Yājñasenī).
केन द्रौपदि वृत्तेन पाण्डवानुपतिष्ठसि ।
लोकपालोपमान्वीरान्यूनः परमसंमतान् ।
कथं च वशगास्तुभ्यं न कुप्यन्ति च ते शुभे ॥४॥

"O Draupadi, by what conduct do you attend to the Pandavas - those heroes who are like the guardians of the world, young, and highly esteemed? And how is it, O auspicious one, that they remain obedient to you and never get angry?"
तव वश्या हि सततं पाण्डवाः प्रियदर्शने ।
मुखप्रेक्षाश्च ते सर्वे तत्त्वमेतद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥५॥

5. tava vaśyā hi satataṁ pāṇḍavāḥ priyadarśane ,

O lovely-faced one, the Pāṇḍavas are indeed always subservient to you. All of them look to you for guidance. Therefore, tell me this truth.
व्रतचर्या तपो वापि स्नानमन्त्रौषधानि वा ।
विद्यावीर्यं मूलवीर्यं जपहोमस्तथागदाः ॥६॥

6. vratacaryā tapo vāpi snānamantrauṣadhāni vā ,
vidyāvīryaṁ mūlavīryaṁ japahomastathāgadāḥ.

Is it through the observance of vows, or through asceticism (tapas)? Or through bathing, mantras, or medicines? Or through the power of knowledge, or the potency of herbs? Or through chanting (japa), sacrificial oblations (homa), or charms?
मम आचक्ष्व पाञ्चालि यशस्यं भगवेदनम् ।
येन कृष्णे भवेन्नित्यं मम कृष्णो वशानुगः ॥७॥

7. mama ācakṣva pāñcāli yaśasyaṁ bhagavedanam ,

O Pāñcālī, tell me that glorious secret, that knowledge of fortune (bhagavedanam), by which my Kṛṣṇa (Lord Kṛṣṇa) may always remain obedient to me.
एवमुक्त्वा सत्यभामा विरराम यशस्विनी ।
पतिव्रता महाभागा द्रौपदी प्रत्युवाच ताम् ॥८॥

Having spoken thus, the glorious Satyabhāmā fell silent. Then, Draupadī, the devoted and greatly fortunate wife, replied to her.
असत्स्त्रीणां समाचारं सत्ये मामनुपृच्छसि ।
असदाचरिते मार्गे कथं स्यादनुकीर्तनम् ॥९॥

9. asatstrīṇāṁ samācāraṁ satye māmanupṛcchasi ,

You truly ask me about the conduct of unchaste women. How can there be any remembrance or glorification on a path that is improperly trodden?
अनुप्रश्नः संशयो वा नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते ।
तथा ह्युपेता बुद्ध्या त्वं कृष्णस्य महिषी प्रिया ॥१०॥
तथा ह्युपेता बुद्ध्या त्वं कृष्णस्य महिषी प्रिया ॥१०॥
10. anupraśnaḥ saṁśayo vā naitattvayyupapadyate ,
tathā hyupetā buddhyā tvaṁ kṛṣṇasya mahiṣī priyā.
tathā hyupetā buddhyā tvaṁ kṛṣṇasya mahiṣī priyā.

anuprasnaḥ saṃśayaḥ vā na etat tvayi upapadyate
tathā hi upetā buddhyā tvam kṛṣṇasya mahiṣī priyā
tathā hi upetā buddhyā tvam kṛṣṇasya mahiṣī priyā

Such a probing question or a doubt is not fitting for you. For indeed, you are endowed with understanding, and you are Kṛṣṇa's beloved chief queen.
यदैव भर्ता जानीयान्मन्त्रमूलपरां स्त्रियम् ।
उद्विजेत तदैवास्याः सर्पाद्वेश्मगतादिव ॥११॥

11. yadaiva bhartā jānīyānmantramūlaparāṁ striyam ,
udvijeta tadaivāsyāḥ sarpādveśmagatādiva.

As soon as a husband recognizes a woman who relies primarily on charms and spells, he would recoil from her, just as one recoils from a snake that has entered the house.
उद्विग्नस्य कुतः शान्तिरशान्तस्य कुतः सुखम् ।
न जातु वशगो भर्ता स्त्रियाः स्यान्मन्त्रकारणात् ॥१२॥
न जातु वशगो भर्ता स्त्रियाः स्यान्मन्त्रकारणात् ॥१२॥
12. udvignasya kutaḥ śāntiraśāntasya kutaḥ sukham ,
na jātu vaśago bhartā striyāḥ syānmantrakāraṇāt.

How can there be peace for an agitated person? And how can there be happiness for a restless one? A husband will never become subservient to a woman due to magic spells.
अमित्रप्रहितांश्चापि गदान्परमदारुणान् ।
मूलप्रवादैर्हि विषं प्रयच्छन्ति जिघांसवः ॥१३॥

13. amitraprahitāṁścāpi gadānparamadāruṇān ,
mūlapravādairhi viṣaṁ prayacchanti jighāṁsavaḥ.

amitra-prahitān ca api gadān parama-dāruṇān

Those who desire to kill administer exceedingly terrible diseases, and also poisons sent by enemies, through the use of roots and incantations.
जिह्वया यानि पुरुषस्त्वचा वाप्युपसेवते ।
तत्र चूर्णानि दत्तानि हन्युः क्षिप्रमसंशयम् ॥१४॥

14. jihvayā yāni puruṣastvacā vāpyupasevate ,
tatra cūrṇāni dattāni hanyuḥ kṣipramasaṁśayam.

Powders administered into those things that a person (puruṣa) consumes by tongue or by skin would undoubtedly kill quickly.
जलोदरसमायुक्ताः श्वित्रिणः पलितास्तथा ।
अपुमांसः कृताः स्त्रीभिर्जडान्धबधिरास्तथा ॥१५॥

15. jalodarasamāyuktāḥ śvitriṇaḥ palitāstathā ,
apumāṁsaḥ kṛtāḥ strībhirjaḍāndhabadhirāstathā.

15.
They are made afflicted with dropsy (jalodara), become lepers (śvitriṇaḥ), gray-haired, and impotent by women; and likewise, dull-witted, blind, and deaf.
पापानुगास्तु पापास्ताः पतीनुपसृजन्त्युत ।
न जातु विप्रियं भर्तुः स्त्रिया कार्यं कथंचन ॥१६॥
न जातु विप्रियं भर्तुः स्त्रिया कार्यं कथंचन ॥१६॥
16. pāpānugāstu pāpāstāḥ patīnupasṛjantyuta ,
na jātu vipriyaṁ bhartuḥ striyā kāryaṁ kathaṁcana.
na jātu vipriyaṁ bhartuḥ striyā kāryaṁ kathaṁcana.

pāpānugāḥ tu pāpāḥ tāḥ patīn upasṛjanti uta na
jātu vipriyam bhartuḥ striyā kāryam kathaṃcana

Indeed, those sinful women who follow evil afflict their husbands. A wife should never, in any way whatsoever, do what is disagreeable to her husband.
वर्ताम्यहं तु यां वृत्तिं पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ।
तां सर्वां शृणु मे सत्यां सत्यभामे यशस्विनि ॥१७॥
तां सर्वां शृणु मे सत्यां सत्यभामे यशस्विनि ॥१७॥
17. vartāmyahaṁ tu yāṁ vṛttiṁ pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu ,
tāṁ sarvāṁ śṛṇu me satyāṁ satyabhāme yaśasvini.
tāṁ sarvāṁ śṛṇu me satyāṁ satyabhāme yaśasvini.
17.
vartāmi aham tu yām vṛttim pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu
tām sarvām śṛṇu me satyām satyabhāme yaśasvini
tām sarvām śṛṇu me satyām satyabhāme yaśasvini
17.
O glorious Satyabhāmā, listen to me and understand fully the true conduct which I maintain towards the great-souled Pandavas.
अहंकारं विहायाहं कामक्रोधौ च सर्वदा ।
सदारान्पाण्डवान्नित्यं प्रयतोपचराम्यहम् ॥१८॥
सदारान्पाण्डवान्नित्यं प्रयतोपचराम्यहम् ॥१८॥
18. ahaṁkāraṁ vihāyāhaṁ kāmakrodhau ca sarvadā ,
sadārānpāṇḍavānnityaṁ prayatopacarāmyaham.

ahaṅkāram vihāya aham kāmakrodhau ca sarvadā
sadārān pāṇḍavān nityam prayataḥ upacarāmi aham

18.
Always abandoning ego (ahaṅkāra), desire, and anger, I constantly and diligently attend to the Pandavas along with their wives.
प्रणयं प्रतिसंगृह्य निधायात्मानमात्मनि ।
शुश्रूषुर्निरभीमाना पतीनां चित्तरक्षिणी ॥१९॥

19. praṇayaṁ pratisaṁgṛhya nidhāyātmānamātmani ,
śuśrūṣurnirabhīmānā patīnāṁ cittarakṣiṇī.

Withdrawing my (external) affection and fixing my mind within my own (ātman) self, I am eager to serve, free from pride, and a protector of my husbands' hearts.
दुर्व्याहृताच्छङ्कमाना दुःस्थिताद्दुरवेक्षितात् ।
दुरासिताद्दुर्व्रजितादिङ्गिताध्यासितादपि ॥२०॥

20. durvyāhṛtācchaṅkamānā duḥsthitādduravekṣitāt ,
durāsitāddurvrajitādiṅgitādhyāsitādapi.

I am fearful of improper speech, inappropriate posture, improper glances, improper sitting, improper walking, and even misleading gestures.
सूर्यवैश्वानरनिभान्सोमकल्पान्महारथान् ।
सेवे चक्षुर्हणः पार्थानुग्रतेजःप्रतापिनः ॥२१॥

21. sūryavaiśvānaranibhānsomakalpānmahārathān ,
seve cakṣurhaṇaḥ pārthānugratejaḥpratāpinaḥ.

I serve the great charioteers, the sons of Pṛthā, who are like the Sun and the sacrificial fire (vaiśvānara), resembling Soma (the moon), blinding to the sight, and possessing fierce splendor and valor.
देवो मनुष्यो गन्धर्वो युवा चापि स्वलंकृतः ।
द्रव्यवानभिरूपो वा न मेऽन्यः पुरुषो मतः ॥२२॥
द्रव्यवानभिरूपो वा न मेऽन्यः पुरुषो मतः ॥२२॥
22. devo manuṣyo gandharvo yuvā cāpi svalaṁkṛtaḥ ,
dravyavānabhirūpo vā na me'nyaḥ puruṣo mataḥ.
dravyavānabhirūpo vā na me'nyaḥ puruṣo mataḥ.

devaḥ manuṣyaḥ gandharvaḥ yuvā ca api sualaṅkṛtaḥ
dravyavān abhirūpaḥ vā na me anyaḥ puruṣaḥ mataḥ

22.
Whether a god, a human, or a gandharva, or even a well-adorned young man, or one who is wealthy and handsome, no other person (puruṣa) is esteemed by me.
नाभुक्तवति नास्नाते नासंविष्टे च भर्तरि ।
न संविशामि नाश्नामि सदा कर्मकरेष्वपि ॥२३॥
न संविशामि नाश्नामि सदा कर्मकरेष्वपि ॥२३॥
23. nābhuktavati nāsnāte nāsaṁviṣṭe ca bhartari ,
na saṁviśāmi nāśnāmi sadā karmakareṣvapi.

na abhuktavati na asnāte na asaṃviṣṭe ca bhartari
na saṃviśāmi na aśnāmi sadā karmakareṣu api

I do not lie down or eat as long as my husband has not eaten, bathed, or rested, even when I am with the servants.
क्षेत्राद्वनाद्वा ग्रामाद्वा भर्तारं गृहमागतम् ।
प्रत्युत्थायाभिनन्दामि आसनेनोदकेन च ॥२४॥

24. kṣetrādvanādvā grāmādvā bhartāraṁ gṛhamāgatam ,
pratyutthāyābhinandāmi āsanenodakena ca.

When my husband arrives home, whether from the field, the forest, or the village, I rise up to greet and welcome him with a seat and water.
प्रमृष्टभाण्डा मृष्टान्ना काले भोजनदायिनी ।
संयता गुप्तधान्या च सुसंमृष्टनिवेशना ॥२५॥

25. pramṛṣṭabhāṇḍā mṛṣṭānnā kāle bhojanadāyinī ,
saṁyatā guptadhānyā ca susaṁmṛṣṭaniveśanā.

I am one who keeps her vessels well-cleaned, prepares delicious food, serves meals at the proper time, is self-controlled, keeps her grains safely stored, and her dwelling well-swept.
अतिरस्कृतसंभाषा दुःस्त्रियो नानुसेवती ।
अनुकूलवती नित्यं भवाम्यनलसा सदा ॥२६॥

26. atiraskṛtasaṁbhāṣā duḥstriyo nānusevatī ,
anukūlavatī nityaṁ bhavāmyanalasā sadā.

I should avoid laughing at inappropriate times, standing frequently at the doorway, lingering long by the rubbish heap, and staying in private gardens.

सर्वथा भर्तृरहितं न ममेष्टं कथंचन ॥२८॥

I should avoid excessive laughter and anger, as well as situations that provoke anger. I am always committed to truth and to serving my husbands. By no means is a life without a husband desirable to me.

When my husband travels abroad for some family purpose, I observe vows and abstain from flowers and adornments.

O excellent lady, I remain disciplined according to instruction, being well-adorned and very diligent, devoted to what is dear and beneficial to my husband.

भिक्षाबलिश्राद्धमिति स्थालीपाकाश्च पर्वसु ।
मान्यानां मानसत्कारा ये चान्ये विदिता मया ॥३२॥

And those duties (dharma) pertaining to family life, which my mother-in-law formerly instructed me in - such as giving alms, making offerings (bali), performing ancestral rites (śrāddha), and offering pot-cooked oblations on festival days - as well as other acts of honor and respect for the venerable ones that I have learned through my own understanding.
तान्सर्वाननुवर्तामि दिवारात्रमतन्द्रिता ।
विनयान्नियमांश्चापि सदा सर्वात्मना श्रिता ॥३३॥

Unwearied, I attend to all of them day and night. With humility, and always adhering to the rules, I am fully devoted with my whole being.

I serve my husbands, who, though gentle, virtuous, truthful in conduct, and upholders of truth and natural law (dharma), can sometimes be enraged like venomous serpents.

स देवः सा गतिर्नान्या तस्य का विप्रियं चरेत् ॥३५॥

Indeed, for women, reliance on their husband is considered my eternal natural law (dharma). He is a god, he is my destination; there is no other. Who would do anything displeasing to him?
अहं पतीन्नातिशये नात्यश्ने नातिभूषये ।
नापि परिवदे श्वश्रूं सर्वदा परियन्त्रिता ॥३६॥

I do not outshine my husbands, nor do I overeat or over-adorn myself. Moreover, I never speak ill of my mother-in-law, always maintaining self-control.

O beautiful one, through attentiveness, constant diligence, and service to my elders (guru), my husbands are obedient to me.

Constantly, I myself alone attend to the noble Kunti, the mother of heroes and truth-speaker, providing her with baths, clothing, and food.

39. naitāmatiśaye jātu vastrabhūṣaṇabhojanaiḥ ,

I never try to surpass her with clothes, ornaments, or food; nor do I slander that Pritha, who is equal to the earth.

As many as eight thousand Brahmins (brāhmaṇa) would daily dine in golden plates in Yudhishthira's abode.

King Yudhishthira maintains eighty-eight thousand householders (snātaka-gṛhamedhin), each of whom has thirty female servants.

ह्रियते रुक्मपात्रीभिर्यतीनामूर्ध्वरेतसाम् ॥४२॥

Additionally, for another ten thousand ascetics (yati), those who maintain celibacy (ūrdhvaretasāṃ), well-prepared food is carried in golden vessels.

I used to honor all those Brahmins (brahmavādin) appropriately with grants of land (agrahāra), and with drinks, clothing, and food.

There were a hundred thousand female servants belonging to the great-souled son of Kunti (Kāunteya), wearing conch-shell bracelets and armlets, and adorned with golden necklaces.

मणीन्हेम च बिभ्रत्यो नृत्यगीतविशारदाः ॥४५॥

They were adorned with precious garlands and ornaments, golden-hued, anointed with sandalwood paste, wearing jewels and gold, and highly skilled in dance and song.

Hundreds of thousands of maidservants belonging to the wise son of Kunti (Yudhiṣṭhira), with vessels in their hands, tirelessly feed guests day and night.

Hundreds of thousands of horses and one hundred thousand elephants constituted the retinue of Yudhiṣṭhira, who resided in Indraprastha.

This was the king's situation then, that he protected the earth. As for those (under his rule), I both instruct and receive information regarding the method of their accounting.

I know all that has been done and left undone concerning everyone: all the women of the inner apartments, all the servants, right down from the cowherds to the shepherds.

Having entirely given up all comfort, I dedicate myself day and night to that responsibility (bhāra), which is unassailable by evil-minded individuals and to which I am deeply attached.

I alone know that the treasury (kośa) of my husbands, who uphold their moral and natural law (dharma), is unassailable like that of Varuṇa, and like an ocean brimming with riches.

आराधयन्त्याः कौरव्यांस्तुल्या रात्रिरहश्च मे ॥५५॥

Whether by day or by night, hunger and thirst are my companions. As I attend to the Kauravas [my husbands], day and night are alike for me.

I know how to perform this great charm to win over a husband. However, I would neither practice nor desire the conduct of unchaste women.

Having then heard those righteous words spoken by Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), Satyā (Satyabhāmā) respectfully addressed Pañcālī (Draupadī), the woman devoted to natural law (dharma).
