वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाराज धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ।
शोकस्यान्तमपश्यन्वै हतं मत्वा सुयोधनम् ।
विह्वलः पतितो भूमौ नष्टचेता इव द्विपः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etacchrutvā mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ ,
śokasyāntamapaśyanvai hataṁ matvā suyodhanam ,
vihvalaḥ patito bhūmau naṣṭacetā iva dvipaḥ.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca etat śrutvā mahārāja
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ambikāsutaḥ śokasya antam
apaśyan vai hatam matvā suyodhanam vihvalaḥ
patitaḥ bhūmau naṣṭacetāḥ iva dvipaḥ
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca mahārāja,
etat śrutvā ambikāsutaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ suyodhanam hatam matvā vai śokasya antam apaśyan vihvalaḥ naṣṭacetāḥ dvipaḥ iva bhūmau patitaḥ
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "O great king, upon hearing this, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the son of Ambikā, found no end to his grief (śoka), having considered Suyodhana slain. Distraught, he collapsed to the ground, like an elephant whose mind was lost, as if unconscious."
तस्मिन्निपतिते भूमौ विह्वले राजसत्तमे ।
आर्तनादो महानासीत्स्त्रीणां भरतसत्तम ॥२॥
2. tasminnipatite bhūmau vihvale rājasattame ,
ārtanādo mahānāsītstrīṇāṁ bharatasattama.

2. bharatasattama,
tasmin rājasattame vihvale bhūmau nipatite (sati),
strīṇām mahān ārtanādaḥ āsīt
2. O best among the Bharatas, when that distraught, most excellent of kings (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) fell to the ground, there arose a great cry of lamentation from the women.
स शब्दः पृथिवीं सर्वां पूरयामास सर्वशः ।
शोकार्णवे महाघोरे निमग्ना भरतस्त्रियः ॥३॥
3. sa śabdaḥ pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ pūrayāmāsa sarvaśaḥ ,
śokārṇave mahāghore nimagnā bharatastriyaḥ.

3. That sound completely filled the entire earth. The women of the Bharata lineage were submerged in a dreadful ocean of sorrow.
राजानं च समासाद्य गान्धारी भरतर्षभ ।
निःसंज्ञा पतिता भूमौ सर्वाण्यन्तःपुराणि च ॥४॥
4. rājānaṁ ca samāsādya gāndhārī bharatarṣabha ,
niḥsaṁjñā patitā bhūmau sarvāṇyantaḥpurāṇi ca.

niḥsaṃjñā patitā bhūmau sarvāṇi antaḥpurāṇi ca
4. bharatarṣabha,
gāndhārī rājānaṃ ca samāsādya niḥsaṃjñā bhūmau patitā sarvāṇi antaḥpurāṇi ca
4. O bull among the Bhāratas, having approached the king, Gāndhārī fell unconscious on the ground, and all the ladies of the inner apartments also collapsed.
ततस्ताः संजयो राजन्समाश्वासयदातुराः ।
मुह्यमानाः सुबहुशो मुञ्चन्त्यो वारि नेत्रजम् ॥५॥
5. tatastāḥ saṁjayo rājansamāśvāsayadāturāḥ ,
muhyamānāḥ subahuśo muñcantyo vāri netrajam.
5. tataḥ tāḥ saṃjayaḥ rājan samāśvāsayat āturāḥ
muhyamānāḥ subahuśaḥ muñcantyaḥ vāri netrajam
5. rājan,
tataḥ saṃjayaḥ muhyamānāḥ subahuśaḥ netrajam vāri muñcantyaḥ tāḥ āturāḥ samāśvāsayat
5. O King, then Saṃjaya consoled those distressed women, who were repeatedly fainting and shedding tears from their eyes.
समाश्वस्ताः स्त्रियस्तास्तु वेपमाना मुहुर्मुहुः ।
कदल्य इव वातेन धूयमानाः समन्ततः ॥६॥
6. samāśvastāḥ striyastāstu vepamānā muhurmuhuḥ ,
kadalya iva vātena dhūyamānāḥ samantataḥ.
6. samāśvastāḥ striyaḥ tāḥ tu vepamānāḥ muhurmuhuḥ
kadalyaḥ iva vātena dhūyamānāḥ samantataḥ
6. tu tāḥ striyaḥ samāśvastāḥ api vepamānāḥ muhurmuhuḥ
vātena samantataḥ dhūyamānāḥ kadalyaḥ iva
6. But even when comforted, those women were repeatedly trembling and being shaken from all sides by the wind, just like plantain trees.
राजानं विदुरश्चापि प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम् ।
आश्वासयामास तदा सिञ्चंस्तोयेन कौरवम् ॥७॥
7. rājānaṁ viduraścāpi prajñācakṣuṣamīśvaram ,
āśvāsayāmāsa tadā siñcaṁstoyena kauravam.
7. rājānam viduraḥ ca api prajñācakṣuṣam īśvaram
| āśvāsayāmāsa tadā siñcan toyena kauravam
7. tadā viduraḥ ca api prajñācakṣuṣam īśvaram rājānam kauravam toyena siñcan āśvāsayāmāsa.
7. Then Vidura also consoled the King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), the ruler who possessed the eye of wisdom, sprinkling the Kuru with water.
स लब्ध्वा शनकैः संज्ञां ताश्च दृष्ट्वा स्त्रियो नृप ।
उन्मत्त इव राजा स स्थितस्तूष्णीं विशां पते ॥८॥
8. sa labdhvā śanakaiḥ saṁjñāṁ tāśca dṛṣṭvā striyo nṛpa ,
unmatta iva rājā sa sthitastūṣṇīṁ viśāṁ pate.
8. sa labdhvā śanakaiḥ saṃjñām tāḥ ca dṛṣṭvā striyaḥ
nṛpa | unmattaḥ iva rājā sa sthitaḥ tūṣṇīm viśām pate
8. nṛpa viśām pate sa rājā śanakaiḥ saṃjñām labdhvā tāḥ ca striyaḥ dṛṣṭvā unmattaḥ iva tūṣṇīm sthitaḥ.
8. O King, O Lord of the people, after slowly regaining consciousness and seeing those women, that king remained silent as if he were mad.
ततो ध्यात्वा चिरं कालं निःश्वसंश्च पुनः पुनः ।
स्वान्पुत्रान्गर्हयामास बहु मेने च पाण्डवान् ॥९॥
9. tato dhyātvā ciraṁ kālaṁ niḥśvasaṁśca punaḥ punaḥ ,
svānputrāngarhayāmāsa bahu mene ca pāṇḍavān.
9. tataḥ dhyātvā ciram kālam niḥśvasan ca punaḥ punaḥ
| svān putrān garhayāmāsa bahu mene ca pāṇḍavān
9. tataḥ ciram kālam dhyātvā punaḥ punaḥ ca niḥśvasan svān putrān garhayāmāsa pāṇḍavān ca bahu mene.
9. Then, after pondering (dhyāna) for a long time and sighing repeatedly, he condemned his own sons and held the Pāṇḍavas in high esteem.
गर्हयित्वात्मनो बुद्धिं शकुनेः सौबलस्य च ।
ध्यात्वा च सुचिरं कालं वेपमानो मुहुर्मुहुः ॥१०॥
10. garhayitvātmano buddhiṁ śakuneḥ saubalasya ca ,
dhyātvā ca suciraṁ kālaṁ vepamāno muhurmuhuḥ.
10. garhayitvā ātmanaḥ buddhim śakuneḥ saubalasya ca
| dhyātvā ca suciram kālam vepamānaḥ muhuḥ muhuḥ
10. ātmanaḥ buddhim śakuneḥ saubalasya ca garhayitvā suciram kālam ca dhyātvā muhuḥ muhuḥ vepamānaḥ.
10. Having condemned his own judgment (buddhi) and that of Śakuni, the son of Subala, and having pondered (dhyāna) for a very long time, he trembled repeatedly.
संस्तभ्य च मनो भूयो राजा धैर्यसमन्वितः ।
पुनर्गावल्गणिं सूतं पर्यपृच्छत संजयम् ॥११॥
11. saṁstabhya ca mano bhūyo rājā dhairyasamanvitaḥ ,
punargāvalgaṇiṁ sūtaṁ paryapṛcchata saṁjayam.
11. saṃstabhya ca manaḥ bhūyaḥ rājā dhairyasammanvitaḥ
punar gāvalgaṇim sūtam paryapṛcchat saṃjayam
11. rājā dhairyasammanvitaḥ ca manaḥ bhūyaḥ saṃstabhya
punar gāvalgaṇim sūtam saṃjayam paryapṛcchat
11. The king, endowed with fortitude, again controlled his mind and questioned Saṃjaya, the charioteer (son of Gavalgaṇa), once more.
यत्त्वया कथितं वाक्यं श्रुतं संजय तन्मया ।
कच्चिद्दुर्योधनः सूत न गतो वै यमक्षयम् ।
ब्रूहि संजय तत्त्वेन पुनरुक्तां कथामिमाम् ॥१२॥
12. yattvayā kathitaṁ vākyaṁ śrutaṁ saṁjaya tanmayā ,
kaccidduryodhanaḥ sūta na gato vai yamakṣayam ,
brūhi saṁjaya tattvena punaruktāṁ kathāmimām.
12. yat tvayā kathitam vākyam śrutam
saṃjaya tat mayā kaccit duryodhanaḥ
sūta na gataḥ vai yamakṣayam brūhi
saṃjaya tattvena punaruktām kathām imām
12. saṃjaya yat vākyam tvayā kathitam,
tat mayā śrutam.
sūta kaccit duryodhanaḥ yamakṣayam vai na gataḥ? saṃjaya imām punaruktām kathām tattvena brūhi
12. O Saṃjaya, I have heard the words you spoke. Tell me, charioteer, has Duryodhana indeed not gone to the abode of Yama? O Saṃjaya, recount this story to me truthfully.
एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीत्सूतो राजानं जनमेजय ।
हतो वैकर्तनो राजन्सह पुत्रैर्महारथैः ।
भ्रातृभिश्च महेष्वासैः सूतपुत्रैस्तनुत्यजैः ॥१३॥
13. evamukto'bravītsūto rājānaṁ janamejaya ,
hato vaikartano rājansaha putrairmahārathaiḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiśca maheṣvāsaiḥ sūtaputraistanutyajaiḥ.
13. evam uktaḥ abravīt sūtaḥ rājānam
janamejaya hataḥ vaikartanaḥ rājan saha
putraiḥ mahārathaiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ ca
maheṣvāsaiḥ sūtaputraiḥ tanutyajaiḥ
13. evam uktaḥ sūtaḥ rājānam abravīt.
rājan,
vaikartanaḥ saha mahārathaiḥ putraiḥ ca maheṣvāsaiḥ sūtaputraiḥ tanutyajaiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ hataḥ.
13. The charioteer, thus addressed, spoke to the king. 'O King, Karṇa (the son of Vikartana) has been slain along with his great warrior sons, and with his brothers, the mighty archers who sacrificed their lives.'
दुःशासनश्च निहतः पाण्डवेन यशस्विना ।
पीतं च रुधिरं कोपाद्भीमसेनेन संयुगे ॥१४॥
14. duḥśāsanaśca nihataḥ pāṇḍavena yaśasvinā ,
pītaṁ ca rudhiraṁ kopādbhīmasenena saṁyuge.
14. duḥśāsanaḥ ca nihataḥ pāṇḍavena yaśasvinā
pītam ca rudhiram kopāt bhīmasenena saṃyuge
14. ca duḥśāsanaḥ yaśasvinā pāṇḍavena nihataḥ.
ca kopāt rudhiram bhīmasenena saṃyuge pītam.
14. And Duḥśāsana was slain by the glorious Pāṇḍava. And his blood was drunk by Bhīmasena in battle out of rage.
