विदुर उवाच ।
द्यूतं मूलं कलहस्यानुपाति मिथोभेदाय महते वा रणाय ।
यदास्थितोऽयं धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रो दुर्योधनः सृजते वैरमुग्रम् ॥१॥
1. vidura uvāca ,
dyūtaṁ mūlaṁ kalahasyānupāti; mithobhedāya mahate vā raṇāya ,
yadāsthito'yaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putro; duryodhanaḥ sṛjate vairamugram.

1. Vidura said: Gambling is the root of conflict, leading to great mutual division or even war. This son of Dhritarashtra, Duryodhana, having resorted to it, now creates fierce enmity.
प्रातिपीयाः शांतनवा भैमसेनाः सबाह्लिकाः ।
दुर्योधनापराधेन कृच्छ्रं प्राप्स्यन्ति सर्वशः ॥२॥
2. prātipīyāḥ śāṁtanavā bhaimasenāḥ sabāhlikāḥ ,
duryodhanāparādhena kṛcchraṁ prāpsyanti sarvaśaḥ.
2. prātipīyāḥ śāntanavāḥ bhaimasenāḥ sabāhlikāḥ
duryodhana aparādhena kṛcchram prāpsyanti sarvaśaḥ
2. The descendants of Pratīpa, the descendants of Śantanu, Bhīmasena and his followers, and the Bāhlikas - all of them will, in every way, encounter great difficulty and distress due to Duryodhana's offense.
दुर्योधनो मदेनैव क्षेमं राष्ट्रादपोहति ।
विषाणं गौरिव मदात्स्वयमारुजते बलात् ॥३॥
3. duryodhano madenaiva kṣemaṁ rāṣṭrādapohati ,
viṣāṇaṁ gauriva madātsvayamārujate balāt.
3. duryodhanaḥ madena eva kṣemam rāṣṭrāt apohate
viṣāṇam gauḥ iva madāt svayam ārujate balāt
3. Duryodhana, solely due to his pride, drives away prosperity from the kingdom. Like an intoxicated bull that forcibly breaks its own horn, he himself causes destruction out of arrogance.
यश्चित्तमन्वेति परस्य राजन्वीरः कविः स्वामतिपत्य दृष्टिम् ।
नावं समुद्र इव बालनेत्रामारुह्य घोरे व्यसने निमज्जेत् ॥४॥
4. yaścittamanveti parasya rāja;nvīraḥ kaviḥ svāmatipatya dṛṣṭim ,
nāvaṁ samudra iva bālanetrā;māruhya ghore vyasane nimajjet.
4. yaḥ cittam anveti parasya rājan
vīraḥ kaviḥ svām atipatya dṛṣṭim
nāvam samudraḥ iva bālanetrām
āruhya ghore vyasane nimajjet
4. O King, a brave and wise person (kavi) who follows another's thoughts, disregarding his own judgment, will sink into dreadful misfortune, just like someone who boards a boat steered by an inexperienced child and launches it into the ocean.
दुर्योधनो ग्लहते पाण्डवेन प्रियायसे त्वं जयतीति तच्च ।
अतिनर्माज्जायते संप्रहारो यतो विनाशः समुपैति पुंसाम् ॥५॥
5. duryodhano glahate pāṇḍavena; priyāyase tvaṁ jayatīti tacca ,
atinarmājjāyate saṁprahāro; yato vināśaḥ samupaiti puṁsām.

ca atinarmāt jāyate saṃprahāraḥ
yataḥ vināśaḥ samupaiti puṃsām
5. Duryodhana gambles with Yudhishthira (the Pandava), and you (Duryodhana) desire victory (thinking 'he wins') through that very game. From excessive jesting, conflict (saṃprahāra) arises, from which the destruction of people approaches.
आकर्षस्तेऽवाक्फलः कुप्रणीतो हृदि प्रौढो मन्त्रपदः समाधिः ।
युधिष्ठिरेण सफलः संस्तवोऽस्तु साम्नः सुरिक्तोऽरिमतेः सुधन्वा ॥६॥
6. ākarṣaste'vākphalaḥ kupraṇīto; hṛdi prauḍho mantrapadaḥ samādhiḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhireṇa saphalaḥ saṁstavo'stu; sāmnaḥ surikto'rimateḥ sudhanvā.
6. ākarṣaḥ te avākphalaḥ kupranītaḥ
hṛdi prauḍhaḥ mantrapadaḥ samādhiḥ
yudhiṣṭhireṇa saphalaḥ saṃstavaḥ
astu sāmnas suriktaḥ arimateḥ sudhanvā
6. Your son's (Duryodhana's) gambling (or manipulation) is ill-conducted and leads to adverse outcomes. In his heart lies a firm, mature concentration (samādhi) on strategic counsel (mantrapada). May a successful friendship (saṃstava) with Yudhishthira endure. However, the mind of this enemy (Duryodhana), though he is a skilled archer (sudhanvā), is completely devoid of conciliation (sāman).
प्रातिपीयाः शांतनवाश्च राजन्काव्यां वाचं शृणुत मात्यगाद्वः ।
वैश्वानरं प्रज्वलितं सुघोरमयुद्धेन प्रशमयतोत्पतन्तम् ॥७॥
7. prātipīyāḥ śāṁtanavāśca rāja;nkāvyāṁ vācaṁ śṛṇuta mātyagādvaḥ ,
vaiśvānaraṁ prajvalitaṁ sughora;mayuddhena praśamayatotpatantam.
7. prātipīyāḥ śāṃtanavāḥ ca rājan
kāvyām vācam śṛṇuta mā atyagāt vaḥ
vaiśvānaram prajvalitam sughoram
ayuddhena praśamayataḥ utpatantam
7. O King, descendants of Pratipa (Prātipīyas) and Śantanu (Śāṃtanavas), listen to this wise counsel; do not let it pass you by! Without resorting to war, you must pacify this exceedingly dreadful, blazing, and ever-rising universal fire (vaiśvānara) (of conflict).
यदा मन्युं पाण्डवोऽजातशत्रुर्न संयच्छेदक्षमयाभिभूतः ।
वृकोदरः सव्यसाची यमौ च कोऽत्र द्वीपः स्यात्तुमुले वस्तदानीम् ॥८॥
8. yadā manyuṁ pāṇḍavo'jātaśatru;rna saṁyacchedakṣamayābhibhūtaḥ ,
vṛkodaraḥ savyasācī yamau ca; ko'tra dvīpaḥ syāttumule vastadānīm.
8. yadā manyum pāṇḍavaḥ ajātaśatruḥ
na saṃyacchet akṣamayā abhibhūtaḥ
vṛkodaraḥ savyasācī yamau ca kaḥ
atra dvīpaḥ syāt tumule vaḥ tadānīm
8. If the Pāṇḍava (Pāṇḍava) Yudhiṣṭhira (Ajātaśatru), overcome by impatience, does not control his anger, and if Bhīma (Vṛkodara), Arjuna (Savyasācī), and the two younger brothers (Yamau) are also present, who then would be your refuge in that tumultuous conflict?
महाराज प्रभवस्त्वं धनानां पुरा द्यूतान्मनसा यावदिच्छेः ।
बहु वित्तं पाण्डवांश्चेज्जयेस्त्वं किं तेन स्याद्वसु विन्देह पार्थान् ॥९॥
9. mahārāja prabhavastvaṁ dhanānāṁ; purā dyūtānmanasā yāvadiccheḥ ,
bahu vittaṁ pāṇḍavāṁścejjayestvaṁ; kiṁ tena syādvasu vindeha pārthān.
9. mahārāja prabhavaḥ tvam dhanānām purā
dyūtāt manasā yāvat iccheḥ bahu
vittam pāṇḍavān ca cet jayeḥ tvam
kim tena syāt vasu vindeḥ iha pārthān
9. O great king, you are the master of wealth! Before the game of dice, you could mentally wish for as much (wealth) as you desired. If you were to win much wealth and the Pāṇḍavas (Pāṇḍavas), what good would that wealth do? Instead, you would find the Pārthas (Pārthas) (as a burden) in this world.
जानीमहे देवितं सौबलस्य वेद द्यूते निकृतिं पार्वतीयः ।
यतः प्राप्तः शकुनिस्तत्र यातु मायायोधी भारत पार्वतीयः ॥१०॥
10. jānīmahe devitaṁ saubalasya; veda dyūte nikṛtiṁ pārvatīyaḥ ,
yataḥ prāptaḥ śakunistatra yātu; māyāyodhī bhārata pārvatīyaḥ.
10. jānīmahe devitam saubalasya veda dyūte nikṛtim pārvatīyaḥ
yataḥ prāptaḥ śakuniḥ tatra yātu māyāyodhī bhārata pārvatīyaḥ
10. We are aware of Saubala's (Śakuni's) gambling. That mountain-dweller (pārvatīya) (Śakuni) knows deceit (nikṛti) in the game of dice. O Bhārata, let that deceitful fighter (māyāyodhī), the mountain-dweller (pārvatīya), go back to where he came from!
